Construction well underway for new K-12 Kingsville school By Mark Ribble KINGSVILLE — Greater Essex County District School Board Director of Education Erin Kelly summed it up best when she said, “It is indeed a wonderful day.” Kelly was speaking from the podium at the ceremony held to officially announce ground-breaking, even though the actual breaking of the ground had occurred a couple of weeks earlier. According to Kelly, the Kindergarten to Grade 12 school being built on Jasperson Lane is the largest of many school projects being constructed across the province. When complete, the school will be over 2,000 square feet and hold more than 1,800 students, integrating high school and elementary students from Kingsville High School, Kingsville Public School, Jack Miner Public School and Harrow Public School. Cost of the build comes in at about $60 million. The Fortis Group is the contractor charged with creating the school from hundreds of hours of hard work by trustees, planners, engineers and municipal officials over the past three years. The announcement was made in 2019 with the school expected to open in 2023, but delays in planning and funding have pushed back the opening date. It’s hoped that the school will open in the fall of 2024. Among those speaking at the cere-

mony were two Grade 9 students from Kingsviile District High School — Ottavio Ruggirello and Kinsey Kendrick. “I can imagine a future where high school students can be a guiding light to elementary students,” said Ottavio. “The future will definitely shine even brighter than the greenhouse lights.” “The wait will be well worth it,” added Kinsey. “When one door closes, another one opens and I for one am looking forward to walking through the doors of the new school.” Both Ottavio and Kinsey expect to be in the first graduating class of 2025 at the new school. With heavy machinery operating in the background, school board trustee Alicia Higgison spoke about how the many hours spent planning have been worth it. “The design had to be appropriate, sustainable and yes, affordable,” she said. “I believe when this school opens in a couple of years, it will be worth the wait — and then some.”

KINGSVILLE — The Easter Bunny was very busy Saturday morning, April 16 at Lakeside Park in Kingsville for the Mayor’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. Mayor Nelson Santos estimated there were 500 children in attendance for the first hunt and another 300 children in the second, older age group. The free community event ran from 10 a.m. to noon and included many activities, from a scavenger hunt to several craft making stations inside the pavilion. Here, two-and-a-half-year-old Alex Bradd wasted no time in tasting one of her chocolate eggs following the egg hunt. SUN photo by Deanna Bertrand

South end traffic study okayed by council LEAMINGTON — A traffic study of the Erie South, Oak, Sherk and Seacliff area has been completed and Leamington Council heard recommendations for the area at the April 12 council meeting. The study was undertaken by McIntosh Perry Consulting Engineers to identify transportation-related issues and opportunities throughout the study area and recommend a set of practical solutions that adhere to local and provincial guid-

ing principles. According to the study, growth and development are projected to continue in the area through 2031 and it is important to recognize active transportation gaps within the area. Two public engagement virtual events were held, with the first one in January 2021 and the second in September 2021. The installation of bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, as well as connecting the multi-use paths from east to west, were major players in the plan-

ning recommendations. The study involved three scenarios: Do Nothing, Road Diet and Ultimate Condition. With the Do Nothing scenario, there would be no future changes to the existing network of traffic and pathways. The Road Diet scenario would call for a reduction of Erie Street to three lanes from four, with the addition of curbside bicycle lanes. The Ultimate Condition would encompass inter-parcel connections between various blocks,

no lane reductions and adjustments to signal timings. The study concluded that the Do Nothing and Road Diet scenarios were not feasible options for implementation, settling on the Ultimate Condition solution as the recommendation going forward. That portion of the study pinpointed about 21 areas which to improve connectivity in accordance with Leamington’s Active Transportation Plan — including a pedestrian connection between the County Fair Mall and Canadian Tire across Pulford Avenue and a vehicle connection between Canadian Tire and Walmart. Another recommendation calls for a roadway to be installed between Walmart/Food Basics parking lot and Seacliff Drive to alleviate traffic on Erie Street South. A traffic signal is also part of the recommendation at Ellison and Sherk. Councillor John Hammond thought the comprehensive report was very promising. “How long before we

Wednesday, April 20, 2022

get 80-90 per cent of these changes made?” he asked. Leamington’s Engineering Project Manager Alex Del Brocco indicated that some of the plans were already in the works, especially with a sewer separation project planned for 2023. Councillor Tim Wilkinson was anxious to see some of the new connections take place, such as the multi-use pathways. “Some of these are priorities, like interconnecting Canadian Tire to

Seacliff Drive and Westmoreland to Maxon,” he said. Council voted to receive and adopt the traffic study report, and to approve in principle, as the basis for future infrastructure improvement, property acquisition, road sidewalk, trail and cycling facilities and traffic operations in the study area. The recommendation was approved unanimously.

Outdoor patio program ends

LEAMINGTON – The Municipality of Leamington has discontinued its temporary outdoor patio program as a result of the provincial government lifting capacity limits in all indoor public settings. The program was launched in 2020 and continued in 2021 to support the local business community through COVID-19 economic recovery. The program allowed business owners to extend or establish a new temporary outdoor patio on private or public property to accommodate dine-in services safely during the height of the pandemic. Uptown business owners looking to operate a patio on municipally-owned sidewalks can still apply through the Sidewalk Patio By-law. For more information go to leamington.ca/patios Business owners who wish to operate a new patio or expand an existing patio on private property will require site plan approval. More information is available at leamington.ca/ siteplan.

Mixed emotions as Wheatley residents return home

By Mark Ribble WHEATLEY —While workers were busy disassembling the fencing that has kept the streets closed down, many Wheatley residents spent Wednesday, April 13 entering their homes and assessing the damage stemming from last August’s explosion. Those residents who returned to their homes were greeted with varying degrees of damage and dishevelment. For Reija and Joe Gruber, the damage to their

home was minimal at first glance. “Surprisingly it’s not bad,” said Reija. “We knew from previous visits that it would better than expected.” Her husband Joe was all smiles as the couple turned the key to the home purchased just three weeks before the explosion last August. A few things have come off the walls but overall, their house is in pretty good shape. “Now we can finally think about all of those

things we wanted to do when we moved in,” said Reija. “It’s good to be home,” added a smiling Joe, who had a hard time hiding his excitement, acknowledging that they aren’t allowed to live there until all proper inspections and approvals are done. “We’re hoping for the end of the month,” said Reija, who said that other than losing their fridge and freezer, most everything else inside the house is fine. Directly across the street from the Grubers, Bugsy and Becky Lamb are not as fortunate. They had been inside their home in December and saw the moldy outcome of having a basement full of sewer water. On Wednesday, their situation hadn’t changed. A sanitation company was there Wednesday morning and pumped 8,400 gallons of sewage out of their basement. “It was awful,” said Becky. “Our home is ruined.” Bugsy remembers cooking some chicken for dinner on August 26, 2021 when suddenly the blast blew out two windows in

the back of the house and another out front. “That was the start of our nightmare,” he said. Becky was just arriving in town from work in Leamington and saw the blast from her car. She pulled in the driveway and yelled for her husband, who hadn’t seen the debris in the air. “I thought a truck had hit a tree or something,” said Bugsy. The next few months would be the most frustrating months of their lives together as they moved from temporary home to temporary home — four in all. “We were fortunate to be able to find places to live, but meanwhile none of our furnishings are salvageable,” said Becky. In fact they don’t even know if their home is salvageable at this point. “The restoration people say they can perform miracles,” said Becky. “We’ll see what they say.” Thankfully, the Lamb’s insurance company has been on top of things, so they are hoping for the best possible outcome. Meanwhile, they can sit in their garage and spend time in the yard as spring

gardening season approaches. From the outside, you would never know there was anything wrong. But all you have to do is open the front door and get hit with the strongest wave of mildew smell you’ve ever experienced to know what the Lambs are dealing with. Anyone entering the house has to don a hazmat suit and respirator. The mold covers almost every square inch of everything in the house including the walls, floors

and ceilings. The basement is a total loss. “But, we’re home,” said Becky Lamb. “After eight months of being displaced, we can finally say we’re home.” Reija Gruber and Becky Lamb met in the middle of the street on Wednesday, sharing a hug, but also sharing a bond far greater than a regular neighbourhood friendship. They’ve got something in common for the rest of their lives, and that something is resilience.

Their task — especially during Earth Week April 19 to 25 — is to promote healthy and sustainable eating habits among youth around the school by reducing the amount of meat that they eat, particularly beef. According to Matthew, meat-based diets are not only bad for your body, but also bad for the environment. “Cattle farms produce five billion tons of climate pollution in the form of methane gas emitted after eating,” said Matthew. Cattle farms have become industrialized farming, according to Matthew and Nicolas. To combat that, they have developed a plantbased cooking class

LEAMINGTON — At the April 12 meeting of Leamington Council, CAO Peter Neufeld presented a plan for the Music On the 42 Summer Concert Series at the Sunset Amphitheatre at Seacliff Park. In 2019, the municipality partnered with The Bank Theatre to bring several live summer concerts to the stage at Seacliff Park. “It’s important for residents, tourists and neighbouring communities to see what a wonderful

venue we have in the Sunset Amphitheatre,” said Neufeld. He was asking approval from council for the municipality to once again partner with The Bank Theatre to bring summer concerts back to the amphitheatre. Council had approved in the 2022 budget for $100,000 to be spent on presenting the concerts. Neufeld said that there would be fewer concerts with more sought-after acts, with hopes to have a concert in June, one on

and other musings

Very superstitious — writing’s on the wall As I sit and write this week’s column, snow is falling at a very heavy pace. If I were writing this in February, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Checking the calendar and seeing the 18th of April makes me wonder. When I saw the forecast and ‘special weather advisory’ on Sunday, I immediately went to social media and apologized for what I had done. What I had done was — when I cleaned out the car on Saturday, I put the snow scraper away for the summer. My jinxing ways continue. A couple of years ago, I pre-wrote my column prior to my November trip to deer camp and lamented that Mike Babcock was not the right fit for the Maple Leafs. He got fired while I was gone, prompting texts from some of my regular readers back home. While that turned out to be a good jinx, I’ve jinxed the Leafs, Tigers and Blue Jays a number of times over the life of this column, so now I try my best to stay away from praising any of them here. It makes me wonder how I became

such a superstitious person. I know there are certain things I do at home simply because that’s the way I’ve always done them and I would never change them. Some people have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and while I can say I’ve not progressed to that, I do have certain things I like to do a certain way. In my hockey days, I put on my equipment in a certain order and if I missed something, I would literally have to take everything off and start over. This became a considerable problem on the rare occasion when Mother Nature called during games. I’ve also found that certain songs in my head produce a better result when playing sports. That stems from the 1979-80 OMHA finals when I played for the Leamington Ardiel Bulldog Juveniles. That was back in the very beginning of teams playing music during warmups and stoppages in play. Down here in Leamington, it was yet unheard of. The Streetsville team had adopted Chi-

na Grove by the Doobie Brothers as their warm-up song and it got in our heads as we skated around the ice that first time. We lost that first game and eventually lost the series and although I love that song, every time I hear it, I think of that first game in Streetsville. From there on, I tried to jam different songs into my head to ward off the Doobie Brothers curse and eventually settled on Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. Don’t ask me why, but it seemed — at least to me — that if I went on the ice humming Fat Bottom Girls to myself, I’d have a better game. I guess that’s how a superstition is born. I know NHL players all have superstitions, like being the first or last onto the ice for warmups, taping their stick a certain way or tapping the goalie on the pads — all things I’ve done that did not get me a look by any scouts whatsoever, by the way. At the tender age of 61, I’m venturing

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble back out on the ball diamonds again this summer, and I’ll take with me a few little oddities that are mine alone, like swinging two bats while in the on-deck circle, and putting my ball bag in a certain place on the bench. I also like to do a series of stretches if time permits. Last year on opening day, I got there late and skipped those stretches, which cost me an achilles injury that is still tender a year later. That’s not a jinx, though. That’s just not properly preparing my old brittle body for the punishment it’s about to endure. So again, I’m sorry for taking that snow scraper and putting it in the back of the closet. It’s now firmly placed in the back seat of my car — likely until August.

George Windsor’s 1962 Pontiac at Point Pelee With warm weather returning, many people will head for Point Pelee National Park, the southernmost tip of mainland Canada, where George Windsor served as the RCMP officer 60 years ago. George was born and raised in New Brunswick. When old enough, he headed to Ottawa to begin his RCMP training. Once fully trained, he was stationed at various locations around Ontario.

He first came to Point Pelee for the summer of 1961. “My detachment vehicle was a 1959 Harley-Davidson Police Edition motorcycle that had been used during Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Visit to Canada in 1959,” he said. “A difficult vehicle to work with if having to make arrests or seize articles, but useful for traffic control.” George returned to Point Pelee the following summer, this time with

a 1962 Pontiac patrol car with a 283 V8 under the hood. The size of that engine tells us the car was built in Oshawa with the same V8 engine for Chevrolet. My first contact with George was by telephone when he called to tell me he had served at Point Pelee in the summer of 1961 when I worked there as a lifeguard. We never met and exchanged names, but we must have passed each other several times on the road that

runs through the park, with George on his Harley and me driving the 1937 McLaughlin-Buick sedan my brother John and I bought for $50. Small world!

Puppy perishes in fire LEAMINGTON — A young couple is without a home and without their puppy after a fire at a Leamington service sta-

tion last Tuesday. On the afternoon of Tuesday, April 12, Leamington Fire Services received a call from staff

utes, and upon arrival there was smoke visible from both floors of the building. Staff advised the firefighters that the fire was in the storage room and office area. Fire crews quickly knocked down the majority of the fire and then conducted a search of the apartment on the second floor, where they found a deceased puppy, which had perished from smoke inhalation. There were working smoke alarms in both apartments and the damage on the second floor was limited to smoke damage only. The tenants were not home when the fire occurred. Police and fire had Seacliff Drive closed for a couple of hours to keep traffic away from the scene.

EASTER EGG FUN AT TWO CREEKS WHEATLEY — Despite the Wheatley Legion being unavailable, the Ladies Auxiliary remains active and continued with a long-standing tradition at Two Creeks Conservation Area on Saturday, April 16 with their annual Easter Egg Hunt. Cedar Beach Drug Store, owned by Red Morris, Photo courtesy of the Kingsville Archives offered drugs, toiletries, china and souvenirs for sale as well as providing a luncheon menu. Speed boat rides were available from the Cedar Beach Drug Store for 50 cents a ride for summer visitors renting a cabin or for cottagers not owning a boat. The boats could be taken through the placid canal or out into the rougher waters of Lake Erie. This photograph of an unidentified family, standing outside the Cedar Beach Drug Store, was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Looking back ...

From the Leamington Post April 23, 1975 Dr. J.A. Shotton, a family physician in Leamington for 37 years, treated his last patient on Friday after announcing his retirement a month ago. Born in Kamloops, Dr. Shotton graduated in 1928 from McGill University in Montreal. He first practiced in Armstrong, B.C., before moving to Leamington and starting his practice in the late 1930s. —— Wind-driven waves surged into the Wheatley harbour Saturday morning, causing a collision between two fishing tugs moored inside. Mersea Police reported damage to the P and E, owned by Antonio Causarano of Leamington, and the H and A Stewart, owned by Salvatore Rubino of Leamington. —— Anderdon Township Deputy Reeve Remo Mancini is the second man to announce a bid for the provincial Liberal nomination as a candidate in the Essex South riding. Harrow Liberal Gerald Pouget announced his intention to run last week. Essex South Liberal MPP Donald Paterson of Leamington has announced he will not seek another term. The 24-year-old Mancini is single and a joint owner of Uncle Tony’s Restaurant in Amherstburg. —— Jill Jackson and Chris Frederick, of Leamington District Secondary School, teamed up Saturday to capture the mixed doubles championship at the Southwestern Ontario Secondary Schools Badminton Championship in Chatham. The pair will compete in the Ontario championships this Friday. —— Ricky Schmidtgall was the leading scorer for the Leamington Johnston Beavers during the 1974-75 hockey season. Schmidtgall paced the novice club with 50 goals and 25 assists for 75 points. Richard Clifford was the runner-up with 38 goals and 24 assists. The goaltending tandem of Marcel Pillon and Corrie Harrison sported a combined 2.24 Goals Against Average. The team bad boy was Paul Vlodarchyk, who spent 28 minutes in the sin bin. —— Billy Wheeler was the scoring leader for the Leamington Legion Major Midgets for the 1974-75 season, finishing the season with 49 goals and 28 assists for 77 points. Runner-up was Dale Ribble, who counted 69 points on 29 goals and 40 assists. The team penalty minutes leader was Dale Towle, who sat for 135 minutes in the penalty box. From the Kingsville Reporter April 23, 1975 Two local Girl Guides, Karen Miinch and Cindy Lethbridge, have been chosen to participate in the program ‘Guiding on the Move’ in August of this year.

The pair will be among a group of 40 Guides who will take part from as far away as Zambia, South Africa. Both Karen and Cindy received Canadian Cords recently — the highest award in guiding. Wheatley’s Janet Drummond has also been chosen to take part. —— About 200 students took part in a protest last Friday at Kingsville District High School. The students gathered in the school and sat-in for about an hour in protest of the cancellation of the Leamington-Kingsville Fun Day, which was to take place on May 9. Five of the students met with Principal L.E. Goyette and the group disbanded. Vice Principal George Meuser said there was some misunderstanding and confusion regarding the scheduled day and it would have meant busing 900 students to Leamington. It was decided that the fun day would go forward next year. —— The annual dinner and ladies night of the Kingsville and Gosfield South Chamber of Commerce will be held next Monday at the Lakeshore Terrace Hotel. President Don Loop states there will be election of officers and the guest speaker will be Robert Daudlin, recently elected M.P. of the Essex-Kent riding.

20 Years Later From the Wheatley Journal April 26, 1995 The Wheatley Friendship Club held their line dancing sessions last week and are now working on ‘Cajun Slap’ and doing very well at it. The group will be doing a couple of performances at the Fish Fry and at the Franklin Nursing Home later in the summer. The club welcomed Terry Misener, who visited last week. Terry is the Nutritional Support coordinator for the South Essex Community Council. He informed the members that services for seniors are threatened in South Essex and invited them to a luncheon to discuss the issue. —— Local artists Harold Burton and Ruth Mitchell have donated various works of art to the Leamington District Memorial Hospital. The artwork is now displayed in the hospital’s front lobby. —— Jerry Sovie entered a top-notch group of hockey players into the recent Legion tournament. The Sovie Group earned bragging rights when they edged out the Wheatley Legion team in the toughest match of the tournament before coasting to victory over their next opponent. Mr. Sovie, always a gentleman on and off the ice, told the Journal that he graciously thanked Bill “Sky” Howe’s Wheatley team for the warm-up game. He also admitted that the Wheatley boys are getting closer every year. To encourage Mr. Howe and the local squad, Jerry let them touch the trophy.

ing. In June 2021, the federal government declared 2022 the Year of the Garden. Earlier this year, Kingsville joined 48 other municipalities – from Victoria, B.C., to Torbay, NL – proclaiming 2022 as the Year of the Garden. The Canadian Nursery Landscape Association initiated the concept as a centennial celebration of Canada’s ornamental

horticultural sector. The intention is to commemorate Canada’s rich garden heritage, celebrate today’s vibrant garden culture, and create important legacies for a sustainable future. Several municipalities are planning to celebrate the Year of the Garden with a local project or event to acknowledge the benefits that gardens and gardening provide. Kingsville’s project in-

cludes a full day of activities on Sunday, May 1. “Kingsville is so fortunate. As Canada’s most southern town, we enjoy a mild climate perfect for gardening, and our citizens are very enviro-conscious,” said Councillor Thomas Neufeld, Chair of Kingsville’s Communities in Bloom Committee. “We wanted to celebrate these attributes with a day of fun and learning along themes of gardening, love of nature, and care for the environment that will appeal to the

whole family.” Starting at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeside Park’s Pavilion, exhibitors and vendors will offer hands-on craft workshops using natural and recycled materials. Workshops continue throughout the day, and the 2nd Kingsville Scouts are providing refreshments and a barbecue. There will also be a series of short presentations on diverse topics, such as: forest bathing; soil enhancement techniques; how to grow your own microgreens; and the

trees of Lakeside Park. A guided nature walk to identify the trees within the park will follow, and the Arts Society of Kingsville (ASK) has organized a Plein Air Painting demonstration by local artists. The event is free to attend. All are invited to come out and help Celebrate the Year of the Garden. See other upcoming initiatives of the Communities in Bloom Committee at www.kingsville.ca/cib.

ECFA inducts four into hall

SURE SIGN OF SPRING LEAMINGTON — As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, the area comes alive in anticipation of spring and summer. Boaters, campers and farmers make final preparations with routine maintenance inspections. Ball diamonds, tennis courts and soccer fields are dotted with eager participants. And golfers emerge from their winter hibernation. Area courses are opening as the weather and conditions allow. Wednesday, April 6, numerous Erie Shores golfers were quick to gather at the links as the greens were freshly cut and the flags were placed. With some early morning sunshine warming the air quickly, Tom Miehl was one of the first to enjoy the course. SUN photo by Greg Coulter

By Fred Groves When he was a young boy, Joe Colasanti would help his family on the farm, and as he grew, would admit to his high school teacher that he would rather be in the field working than in school studying. “Back in the late 1930s and early 1940s, I remember being out in the fields growing corn and tobacco,” recalls Colasanti. He, along with Mark Balkwill, Harold Hall and the late Joe Malenfant, were all inducted into the Essex County Federation of Agriculture’s Hall of Fame Thursday night in Harrow. For Colasanti, it’s much more than farming as he is the owner of one of the most popular tourism destinations in Ontario, Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens in Ruthven. And, as his presenter Kingsville Mayor Nelson Santos noted, a true trendsetter when it comes to economic-tourist development. “I still get up every day and go to work. I enjoy what I do and I’m going

he has spent countless hours dedicating his time and energy to his community. He is one of several second-generation farmers to be inducted into the ECFA Hall of Fame, as his father Clifford is also an inductee. “When I look up there,” said Balkwill, about other members of the hall, “it’s an impressive group of men and women. It’s a pleasure to be up there with my dad.” Malenfant passed away in 2019 but he was very well represented by his family, including his wife Cecile who accepted his induction on behalf of the entire family. Malenfant and his brothers worked nearly 950 acres and he was a director with both the wheat and soybean boards. “In his retirement he was a tireless worker with the Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum,” said Gary Strubar, who was pleased to induct Malenfant into the Hall of Fame.

to keep doing it as long as I can,” said the soon to be 89-year-old Colasanti. When it was time for Hall to address the large crowd, he was gracious in his acceptance into the Hall of Fame and brought with him a unique piece of history. He held up an item that was a mystery to many, a husking pad that he used when he was very young to harvest one ear of corn at a time. Hall was the Past President of the local wheat board, a former member of Essex Farmers, and active with the local ploughman’s association. However, it was his volunteer work with the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade for over 40 years that many people in the area remember. Balkwill grew up on the family farm and followed the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were dairy farmers in Kingsville. From a young age, he was involved in the 4H, Junior Farmers and was the Past President of the ECFA. Like all of the recipients this year,

Lincs are next opponent

Flyers sweep Rockets with last second goal

By C. Scott Holland STRATHROY — Game four of the first-round series between the Flyers and Strathroy Rockets proved to be a great battle despite a constant parade to the penalty box for both teams. Starting goalies Boe Piroski (Leamington) and Chazz Nixon (Strathroy) put on a clinic for two periods before either team notched a goal. Piroski halted 19 while Nixon stopped 31. But in the end it was a Flyers goal, which came with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation to give them the lead and allow them to sweep Strathroy 4-0. The constant penalty parade certainly hampered the two teams to generate any offence, but the Flyers did show a toughness and defensive ability to keep Strathroy from extending the series. The Flyers had eight powerplay opportunities to the Rockets’ six. The Flyers scored on one chance while the Rockets were kept off the board with the extra attackers. While on a powerplay opportunity in the third, Ryan Clark and Connor MacPherson shoveled the puck to Gavin Grundner who moved into the top of the slot and unleashed a screen shot that sailed into the Rockets’ net to open the scoring. The Rockets replied to even the score three minutes later when Caden Faulkner lifted a rebounded over Piroski. With only seconds left on the clock and a faceoff to the left of Strathroy goalie Nixon, Ryan MacPherson got possession of a loose puck and backhanded it out to the slot where Connor MacPherson stood all alone. MacPherson ripped the puck into the top left corner to seal the victory and the series win. The Flyers will now take on the St. Marys Lincolns. Game one is in Leamington on Thursdsay, April 21 at 7:10 pm, with game two Friday in St. Marys. Game three is back here Sunday, April 24 at 2:10 pm. Game four is in St. Marys and game five, if necessary, in Leamington on April 28. Game six is in St. Marys on April 29 and game seven is on May 1 in Leamington at 2:10 pm.

Three locals named to Dodgeball Canada posts WINDSOR — Dodgeball Canada has announced that Windsor’s Jeremy Renaud has been appointed to the role of General Manager for Team Canada. As part of Renaud’s role, he will be responsible for overseeing the team’s participation at Nationals (June 16-19, 2022) and Worlds (August 28 to September 4, 2022), which will take place at the Saville Community Sports Centre (The Uni-

versity of Alberta). “We are thrilled to welcome Jeremy to Dodgeball Canada,” says President Duane Wysynski. “Jeremy has already been playing a dual role on both the national team side and tournament one as Canada prepares to host both events in Edmonton this summer.” Renaud comes from an extensive background in sport at the regional, provincial, national and international level, both as

I’m a Bulldog mix weighing 72lbs. I am a super excitable, energetic, and silly guy looking for my forever home! Way back when in my old home, I wasn’t always cared for as well as I should have been... Because of this, I am looking for a particular household that is calm and predictable and there isn’t any kind of chaos. I hate seeing people fight or yell as it scares me a lot, so that’s why I just want a calm and safe household that I can relax in. I do seem pretty playful with dogs, but I do come on strong so it would need to be a pal that can handle a hyper guy like me. I need a home with a fenced yard and an adopter that is willing to help guide me. I am a friendly boy with a loyal and loving personality. LEAMINGTON — Dale’s Friday Coffee House is returning to The Bank Theatre stage on Friday with it’s 100th show and 13th season. The long-running local talent showcase has been a must-play event for performers across the region and is well known in the musical coffee house circuit. The series was started by local musician Dale Butler to help showcase the local musical talent and give music lovers a taste of that talent. John Moran — a good friend of Dale’s and the sound engineer, vice president and chair of pro-

Young Oilers fan gets trip of a lifetime

By Mark Ribble LEAMINGTON — Easter weekend 2022 will be one to remember for 10-year-old Christopher Kok of Leamington and his family. Christopher is a lifelong super fan of Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers and his wish of seeing an Oilers game in person came true this past weekend. Since Edmonton is two hours behind us, young Christopher’s issue has always been fighting to stay awake to see his beloved team play but a

few weeks ago, a rare 7 pm Eastern game-time allowed him to actually catch a whole game. “We watched him with all of his memorabilia watching the game and saw how excited he was,” said his father Mike. “We decided then that he needed to get to a game.” So Mike and his wife Marina started looking for flights that would coincide with a Saturday game so they could make their son’s dream come true. They chose the Easter weekend game, which

gave them time to get to Edmonton on Friday and enjoy the atmosphere. It would be Christopher’s first time on a plane. Mike, Marina, Christopher and his sister Addison boarded a flight west on Good Friday morning and arrived in Edmonton Friday afternoon. They attended the game Saturday and watched the Oilers shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0. Christopher was in his glory watching all the excitement at Rogers Place Arena and got to meet Edmonton coach

Jay Woodcroft before the game. A sign saying “I travelled 2,600 kms from Leamington Ontario to see my Oilers” was created and as the family sat in the concourse area, an Oilers PR person noticed it and snapped a photo, which ended up on the Oilers’ Twitter feed. Meanwhile in the rink, the Koks managed to get Christopher’s sign noticed by Oilers forward Zack Kassian, who himself spent time in Leamington as a child. All-in-all it was a whirlwind Easter weekend for the Kok family, but nobody had a bigger smile than Christopher, who got to see his Oilers win in person and that made for a perfect Easter weekend.

Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft took a moment for a photo with Christopher Kok. Kok family photo

April 22, 2022 marks the 20th anniversary of Earth Day in Canada! More than six million Canadians join a billion people in more than 170 countries every year in staging Earth Day events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. First launched as an environmental awareness event in the United States in 1970, Earth Day (April 22) is celebrated worldwide as the birth of the environmental movement. Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers are committed to sustainable growing practices. As a sector we have invested in ways to increase the amount of food we can grow for Ontario families while also looking to ensure our practices keep environmental stewardship at the forefront. A key strategy in combatting climate change worldwide is to find ways to reduce carbon footprint. Plants grown in a greenhouse (like all other plants) consume carbon dioxide as part of the photosynthetic process. Greenhouse farms are also an incredibly

efficient use of land. Across Ontario, the 3500 acres of greenhouse farmland would take nearly 25 times that amount of land in open fields to grow the same amount of vegetables! Greenhouses are also extremely efficient at utilizing water. This includes nutrient water that is recirculated throughout the greenhouse, recycled, treated and reused. This aids in temperature regulation as well as minimizes the amount of purified water that exits the greenhouse. There are also other natural processes that are part of greenhouse farming. Bumblebees are used to pollinate produce, which is a standard practice in the greenhouse sector. These hard-working bumblebees help improve the quality and quantity of the produce grown. Our farmers and marketers are continuously improving their operations by increasing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability practices. We understand that being good stewards of the land is part of growing good food sustainably for all.
