Even after 12 years as Editor of Spa Life Magazine, I had a ‘first’.
I recently visited a spa in Elora, Ontario (my old stomping grounds) I had a facial performed by a male aesthetician. Yes a guy! I have to admit I was curious and discovered some interesting things about myself! I am not a skeptic by any sense of the imagination, and remember I have my spa credentials too. But I’ve just never come across a male aesthetician before. My friend Karen (from Elora, too) was telling me about an amazing facial she had that I must try it. ‘And guess what? He is the spa owner and he is a guy!’ That was pretty much the message I got. Why question a friend? So I made an appointment and went. There is something to be said about a small spa. I had it all to myself and the spa owner/ therapist for an uninterrupted glorious hour. In fact he put a sign on the front door which said ‘treatment in progress’ so walk-ins wouldn’t disturb us. My treatment was an anti-aging over-the-top facial, with natural products and a glorious massage. Decadent yes. Was it weird given by a man? Maybe at first I was a little apprehensive but I think it was one of the best facials I have ever had! The massage was strong and he made me feel very comfortable. So the gain was I felt special because I was the only one there and he knew his stuff about products and techniques. Deal ladies, when a man offers to give you a facial run, don’t’ walk!

ow – have you seen Burlington, Ontario, lately? And, if not, why haven’t you? On the trail of unexpected getaways, our Spa Life autumn quest led me to spa heaven, culinary treats, and a new favorite destination. Tucked in between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment you’ll find day spas to relax you, shopping to amaze you and it is all wrapped up in one of the top ten cities in Canada. That’s right: Burlington has made the top ten list for best city to live, raise your children, retire, and find employment. The secret to their success? “It’s certainly growing,” says Pam Belgrade, Executive Director of Tourism Burlington, “but its growth has been carefully thought out to be attractive to both residents and visitors.” The result is an environment that is exciting, versatile, and welcoming. There’s the new Performing Arts Centre that attracts both Canadian and international performers, condominium developments that offer that stellar water view,
10
the spectacular waterfront trail, the natural wonders of The Green Belt, and the list goes on. “What people say about Burlington,” explains Pam, “is that it’s a contemporary urban city with all the amenities, but we still have that small town feel. We’re a community.” Of course, spas have always been a part of that, according to Pam. “We are adding to our repertoire of spas and we are adding more day spas,” adds Pam, “for the full spa experience.” The Blair Lancaster Spa is just one example. A Decleor institute, here you will find everything from facial to pedicure, massage to healing treatments. (www.blairlancaster.com ) But with that special Burlington touch: Blair Lancaster, owner and Spa Director, began her career as Miss Burlington, going on to become Miss Canada. Now a City of Burlington Councillor, she shares her vast experience and confidence with other women, via the spa and other work. Oh, and did I mention that Blair Lancaster Spa is part of Burlington’s Chocolate Trail? Its specialty is the Chocolate Body Wrap. Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
What girls’ getaway would be complete without chocolate? Burlington has that and more! “We have a large number of chocolatiers for such a small community,” confides ‘culinary goddess’ Linda Cvetanovic, of Tourism Burlington’s Administration and Special Projects. In addition to free samples, discounts, decadent desserts and artisan foods, the Burlington Chocolate Trail features five chocolatiers, and two spas offering chocolate treatments. (www.burlingtonchocolatetrail.ca) Go to Je Spa House of Beauty & Wellness, and treat yourself to the Chocolate Hydrating Facial, or better yet, the Chocolate Champagne Pedicure. Je Spa is an organic day spa, featuring an holistic approach to aesthetics. Using cruelty free products, their professional staff delivers a full menu listing of treatments available. (www.jespa.ca) Sadly, we girls can’t live on chocolate alone. That’s where A Taste of Burlington comes in. Local fine dining offers a Prix Fixe invitation to new culinary experiences. City restaurants offer it all, from a 4-diamond rating, to locally-grown ingredients, from vegwww.spalifemagazine.com
an menus to chefs with impressive pedigree. “They’re really known in food circles,” says Linda. “One of the great aspects of Burlington is our owner-operator restaurants – many by chefs - so you get a great variety.” (www.tasteofburlington.ca) No wonder Burlington is the ideal getaway destination. “Burlington is one of those hidden jewels,” says Pam. “You’re coming across the Burlington Skyway, making a beeline for Toronto, but we’re a perfect place for a hub!” With accommodation from b&bs to waterfront luxury, and plenty in the region to see and do, where else would you want to go, to get away from it all, for a while?

Burlington is clearly all about the lifestyle you want. Visit Burlington where you can get away from it all!
Especially where there is some of the best spa-ing available! At Spa in the Village, for example: it is a unique location at historic Village Square, a replica of a quaint English village. magine a day when simple tasks become incredibly painful. Getting up from your bed, opening a jar, even bending down to give your grandchildren a hug can all be reminders that you suffer with arthritis. A degenerative disease of the cartilage and bones, symptoms of arthritis include pain, swelling, morning stiffness, restricted mobility, and noisy joints. Arthritis can affect the fingers, shoulders, knees, spine, and hips, making activities of daily living feel like a constant battle. The most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
It occurs in both men and women, frequently affecting joints only on one side of the body. Older adults are more prone to this form of arthritis due to the aging process and ‘wear and tear’ on the joints but it can also be caused by trauma, overuse, infection, and an unhealthy diet.
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage surrounding a joint loses minerals and becomes inflamed and stiff. These changes result in the destruction of cartilage leaving adjoining bones with no protective layer to glide smoothly over one another.
Naturopathic Treatment of Arthritis includes several strategies:
12
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an autoimmune disorder. The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are many, from digestive dysfunction to food sensitivities to immune imbalance. This condition often results in deformity of the same joints on both side of the body.
1) Exercise: A sedentary lifestyle reduces circulation and promotes weight gain, both of which aggravate musculoskSpalife Magazine Escapes 2012
eletal problems. Walking, swimming, yoga, Pilates, and cycling improve muscle strength and maintain mobility. Taking the time to stretch daily and being aware of correct posture is also important. 2) Diet: Eat more foods that are alkalinizing for the body and which help to decrease chronic inflammation, including kale, artichoke, celery, turnip greens, mustard greens, lettuce, millet, barley, figs, prunes, cherries, pineapple, limes, lemons, olive oil, flaxseed oil, fish (essential fatty acids) nuts and seeds. Avoid sugar, nightshade vegetables such as white potato, tomato, peppers and eggplant, dairy products, red meat, refined or processed foods, fried foods, alcohol, and caffeine. Not only are these foods acidifying for your body, but they will also contribute to chronic inflammation. It is also important to have your Naturopathic Doctor do a www.spalifemagazine.com
blood test to identify if you have any food sensitivities and you should eliminate these foods from your diet. 3) Low Intensity Laser Therapy: This unique form of laser therapy is incredible for treating chronic and degenerative conditions such as arthritis. It is non-invasive, non-toxic, easily applied, has no known negative side effects, increases lymphatic drainage and elimination of toxins, and enhances the body’s natural healing processes. 4) Acupuncture: Acupuncture points are located on meridians in the body, through which vital energy or Qi (chee) flows. Needling specific acupuncture points can remove stagnation and obstructions, which in turn improves the natural flow of Qi throughout our bodies and eliminates pain. 5) Mesotherapy and Biopuncture are treatments involving injections of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and homeopathic anti-inflammatory preparations just under the skin using short needles and specific injection techniques over the sites of pain. The solutions injected superficially remain in the affected area longer than they would if delivered via deep injection. 6) Intravenous (IV) vitamin, mineral and amino acid therapy provide the raw materials necessary for our cells to function optimally and create healing. Several factors can prevent the absorption of nutrients from the food we eat. Cells in our body become too weak to transport these nutrients to allow for pain relief. IV therapy bypasses the stomach and liver for metabolism and goes directly into the blood stream. As a Naturopathic Doctor licensed in IV therapy, I will use this treatment weekly or twice a week depending on the medical condition and the frequency is reduced as the condition improves.

Spa Allure – Is it a Man’s World?
A look at Men in the Spa Male Aestheticians
By Mary Hughes
M Rakesh Esthetics
ost of us who enjoy spa-ing have most likely had females look after our nails, feet, facial and body treatments. It is certainly not unusual to have a male massage therapist at a spa and, by the way, males still dominate a good portion of the massage industry these days. Could you imagine having a guy give you a facial or a pedicure? When researching this story I found very few male aestheticians across our country. However the few I did find have extraordinary stories to share. Meet Rakesh Singh age 44, of Rakesh Esthetics who immigrated to Canada from Fiji as a young child. He completed a busi-
14
ness degree by the age of 22 (to please his parents) but it was Heather Mahy of Les Beaux Visages in Prince George, British Columbia who introduced the love of the beauty business to him at a young age. Rakesh attributes his career to Heather for all her knowledge: it inspired him to get into the business. That led him to study makeup artistry at Blanche Macdonald Centre in Vancouver in 1998. He worked in the makeup business for Clarins for two years. He relocated to Toronto in 2000 with his partner. He continued his work representing the Clarins line and then fate changed…. Three years later they were off to the country and we mean the boonies, two hours north west of Toronto, a far cry from city life. Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
“After we moved I was in the middle of nowhere without a car for the first three months then once I got my own vehicle, I worked as a server to get to know the area and then it hit me – I wanted to be in aesthetics and enrolled at Gina’s College of Advanced Aesthetics in April 2004.” While at school he worked part-time at a spa that required he commute one and a half hours each way. He worked at various spas upon graduation and at a natural skin care company but it wasn’t enough. He ventured into his own business in 2007. Located in Elora, a small village in southwestern Ontario “I want to spoil people rotten with time. My business model is to assist, enlighten and have an unparalleled experience with service.” www.spalifemagazine.com
Brian Lisicky age 26 currently works as an aesthetician at Bodé Spa for Men located in Ottawa, Ontario
“I may not be successful at everything but I don’t shy away from a challenge.” Rakesh Singh

He welcomes all clients. Women make up most of his current clientele. His spa offers an intimate experience. At the current time it is only Rakesh performing aesthetic services and it has a wonderful charm of country meets urbania! www.rakeshesthetics.com 519-846-9997 Meet Brian Lisicky, age 26, who currently works as an aesthetician at Bodé Spa for Men located in Ottawa, Ontario. He is a graduate of Elmcrest College, in Toronto, from the Professional Spa Therapist program. He was the second male in Canada to graduate from that class in 2010, which is a 10-month intensive program. Brian got into the business because as www.spalifemagazine.com

a youth he had a variety of skin conditions like Rosacia and acne. He was always interested in looking for cures and treatments for his skin conditions. Originally he had intended on being a massage therapist but once he got to Elmcrest College he reviewed the spa therapist program and felt that was a better fit for him, as he knew that he wanted to work with people and wanted them to feel good about themselves. Most of Bodé spa clients are (90%) male and they feel quite comfortable having a male work on them. Brian is known for his waxing but his favorite treatment to give is facials. Brian’s specialty is skin care and helping with those issues that men suffer from. Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
Brian says, “Traditionally aesthetics is a female dominated profession and now that men are looking after themselves better, you will find more and more male aestheticians going into that profession. It is ok for them to be a part of this line of work.” Brian offers advice to those men thinking of going into the spa industry: “If you love to help people it is very rewarding and be prepared to give a lot of yourself. Sometimes clients needing not only the Aesthetic work but emotional support as well.”

Men really don’t care who their service provider is – they are more concerned with allowing themselves to be pampered” Daniel Francoeur age 47. Owner of Bodé Spa for Men
Bodé Spa for Men
Also meet Daniel Francoeur, age 47. Owner of Bodé Spa for Men he has been in the spa business for 16 years. Daniel started his career at the School of Canadian College Ortho Therapy in Ontario for massage therapy and worked as a massage therapist. He owned a country retreat outside of Ottawa called Little House Spa. There his male clientele grew to 40% and from that Bode Spa for Men was born (by the way Bodé also accepts women, so ladies don’t feel left out!)
Bodé Spa’s first philosophy: Spa for men by men. While women come here - for the professional service, Daniel points out they enjoy all the services, even Brazilians. “We teach our clients how to care for themselves at home and to use the products properly. Men almost have to be better educated because we have to try harder and prove ourselves more,” Daniel says. “So we talk about skin, procedures, product knowledge – we have to know our stuff.”
Daniel says he meets so many people all the time, “We never know who is coming through the door. It is so satisfying to see someone come through the door in one state (all tense) and then leave all relaxed. We know we did our job!” www.bodespa.com 613-565-2633
Daniel says, “In our setting male aestheticians can tell female clients the ‘truth’ about their skin and females appreciate the male perspective.” When a friend convinced him to take aesthetics, he apprenticed for a while to get a feel for it. He then enrolled at the Ottawa Academy for Aesthetics. Daniel currently sits on the Advisory Board of Algonquin College and he wants to implement a male course at the college. He is also passionate about getting the aesthetic graduates all licensed, similarly to the hair salon/stylist business.

Doug Janczyn: age 30 works at Manscape Spa Victoria, British Columbia
Meet Doug Janczyn: now age 30 and living in Victoria, British Columbia. In his former life Doug was doing quite well at business to business sales consulting. He even had an in-home retail business. Looking for a change, however, he took inspiration from the fact that he had always enjoyed working with his hands. While carpentry didn’t interest him, he was always told that he had a ‘good touch’ and a relaxing aura about him. In fact, he had the ‘healing touch’. He chose to become an aesthetician and spa therapist. His formal education was with Blanche MacDonald. In Vancouver, all in a one-year intensive diploma course, he studied aesthetics: nails, skin care, facials, and spa therapy, which encompassed relaxation treatments, body wraps, and massage. Now he is at Manscape Spa, an all-male spa located in the Victoria Conference Centre next to the Empress Hotel. He has been in the business for two years and has never looked back. He says he’s surprised “how much I have taken to it and enjoyed it. I never knew I would find it to be so rewarding.” Manscape Spa www.spalifemagazine.com
His specialty is facials, but back waxing is a close second! “I always have to work Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
hard to sell a facial, as guys don’t sign up readily for that,” he says. Manscape Spa has an all-male clientele, with services offering traditional aesthetics, skin tightening, photo rejuvenation, fat removal through Cavitation (ultrasound that removes fat), and massage. Although he has a table at home for his female regular clients, being a tall man with a larger framed body size he feels working on men is a better fit. “Women shy away from working with men.” However, Angie Barnetson is the General Manager of Manscape, and was the principal at his college. She was “one of my mentors,” says Doug, “and I have had a fantastic experience. I feel I have ongoing support even after I’ve graduated.” The challenge? He says, “This industry takes a lot out of you and you need to reserve some time for yourself. If truth be known I have the ugliest feet and just don’t get around to doing them!” Manscape Spa Victoria, British Columbia 250-590-8656 www.manscape.com

ealing is healing no matter what modality is employed. Throughout my years of practice as a Medical Intuitive, Spiritual Channel, Medium, Reiki Master/Teacher and Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming I often found myself clarifying the difference between healers, intuitive healers, psychics and mediums, so that my clients were clear about what to expect, and what not to expect, during our sessions. You can experience healing results from a medical doctor, naturopath, massage therapist, psychotherapist or Reiki Master to name a few. These people are all healers, yet each operates in a different healing
18
modality (the way in which information is presented, or method used in a particular therapy) with its own rules, regulations and structure that approaches healing from different focuses. When you add the word ‘intuitive’ to that mix, it adds a whole new level of healing to those modalities. As I explain it, ‘intuition’ denotes a unique ‘sensory skill set’ that enables people (not just healers) to reach beyond the physical body, beyond the limits of the mind and past the upset of human emotions, accessing vast, uncharted areas where all sorts of information lays in wait. This information can come in the form of images, colors, smells, sounds or direct messages that hold some specific meaning for the client. So when a healer, such as those mentioned above, also Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
has an ‘intuitive ability’, they are referred to as ‘intuitive healers’ - those who access and use intuitive information in conjunction with their healing practice, for the client’s highest good. A Medical Intuitive, Spiritual Channel, Psychic or Medium, on the other hand, is not necessarily a healer. For purposes of clarification, I say that these people also have a unique ‘sensory/intuitive skill set’, however the context in which they access and deliver the intuitive information they receive is not necessarily during a healing session. A Medical Intuitive accesses information for their clients from the wisdom stored in their body. A Spiritual Channel connects with the client’s spirit guide or higher self. www.spalifemagazine.com
Psychics read energy/auric fields or use tools such as a card deck or crystal balls to retrieve information from many areas for their clients, and Mediums connect with loved ones who have passed on. In my experience, these people deliver this information in the form of ‘readings’ or ‘verbal print outs’, if you will. The information is not censored. It is delivered to the client, exactly as it is received, for the clients to interpret and decide for themselves what to do with this information. For me, the world of intuitive healing is all about ‘arriving where you didn’t know that you needed to be, gently guided by a skilled and trusted intuitive practitioner’. If you are interested in exploring the world of intuitive healing, I suggest doing some research in areas that you feel ‘drawn to’. Call or meet with different practitioners to get a first hand understanding of who they are, what they do and what they don’t do, before you commit to working with them. You should ask questions about their credentials, the specific modality they practice, years of experience and spiritual traditions if any. Ask if they have any personal healing experi-
ences they might like to share and don’t be afraid to ask for references. Your Intuitive Healer will be like a ‘special tour guide’ helping you navigate and traverse the rough terrains of your life, be it illness, difficult relationships, financial concerns, lethargy, or full-on depression, to name a few. The more you understand and the more comfortable you are with your Intuitive Healer, their skill sets, and the healing modalities they practice, the better your healing sessions will be.
Alaina Harper is a retired intuitive healer with certification in several disciplines, through mentorship and other training programs, including Louise LeBrun at Partners in Renewal Inc.

ave you ever dreamed of not having to put on eyeliner? Or pencil your brows on, everyday? Permanent Makeup, or micro-pigmentation is a great answer to your beauty dilemma. But just where would you start? Many spas don’t offer that service so you have to seek out a specialist with proper training and skills. Remember, there is no room for error as most Permanent Makeup is done on the face. So here are some tips on what to look for to help you make an educated decision. Spa Life asked Ann-Marie Furness of Finesse Permanent Make-Up to give us what-you-should-know on Permanent Makeup. Ann-Marie Furness is a licensed artist and is Paramedical Certified. www.finessepm.com Permanent Make-up is a profession performed by certified practitioners. First of all, ask many questions when sourcing this service. For instance I only use organic base – they are MRI safe pigments, they are especially safe for the face. If you ever have to have an MRI you don’t want ink to change color because of it. Be conservative and choose an artist that practices the ‘Less is More’ theory. PLACEMENT is everything. You want to look natural and the results should be perfect. Caring for Permanent Make-up is simple: just wash and wear, but saying that, remember, Buyer Beware!
1. PRICE: The lowest price may not be your best bargain. Once your procedure is complete you do not get a second chance. Choosing an Artist with the best past record.... PRICELESS! 2. WHY DOES PRICING VARY SO MUCH? Ask the practitioner what type of base pigments and type of needles they use. For instance my pigments are organic and MRI safe. I DO NOT USE INK. Therefore I do not get migration of color, or color changes. Pigments are more expensive, that is why prices are higher than others. Be choosey - it is going on your face! 3. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRACTITIONER FOR YOU A past record speaks for itself. Ask the artist how many procedures they have done. Ask how many years they have been in practice and if they have had reactions or issues. Do you see any diplomas on the walls? Look at them - they are displayed for a reason! 4. WHAT KIND OF REGULATION COVERS PERMANENT MAKE-UP? None! We are not regulated in Canada. 5. AGAIN, WHAT SETS ARTISTS APART?
Here are ten considerations when thinking about Permanent Makeup:
Qualifications and setting: I have qualifications as a Paramedical Permanent Make-up Specialist, Tattoo Artist, MicroPigmentation Artist and Cosmetic Corrective Make-up Specialist, for example. Ask if they have been inspected by the local health unit. This is huge.
www.spalifemagazine.com
Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
6. WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE LICENSED? Each area and province is different. In my local area, the municipality was adamant about being properly zoned, having proper insurance, and wanted copies of my business license or incorporation papers. They also wanted the Personal Services Setting Inspection Report. 7. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT BAD PERMANENT MAKE-UP PROCEDURES? Remember this make-up is permanent and you will have to live with your decision. Base your choice on skill, not cost. It costs more to correct an amateur’s mistake than to pay a professional. By asking the right questions, hopefully you will make the right choice. 8. DOES IT HURT? Yes and no. It does if the practitioner doesn’t use a special topical freezing compound. Clinics associated with a doctor may have topical freezing compound, so clients are quite comfortable. 9. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY MRI SAFE PIGMENTS? Some pigments have too much metal in them and can stop you from having an MRI. Use organic base, MRI safe pigments. This is a must! 10. WHAT GOT YOU INTO PERMANENT MAKE-UP? Working in a Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon’s Office, and seeing people who are burn victims, car accident cases, have alopecia (hair loss) or breast cancer, I truly wanted to be part of the reconstruction.

Dr. Sheetal Sapra Director of Dermatology of the Institute of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery Oakville, Ontario
Q: Tattooing is very popular these days and many people have tattoos that they don’t like anymore or the tattoos have not ‘aged’ well. What is the best way to have them removed? And, are there any side effects or risks involved in having tattoos removed? For this answer Spa Life asked Dr. Sheetal Sapra Director of Dermatology of the Institute of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, Oakville, Ontario. Dr. Sapra received his training in dermatology at the University of Ottawa and Dalhousie University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology. He is a member of the Canadian Dermatology Association, the Canadian Laser Aesthetics Surgery Society and more. 800-417-3877 www.icls.ca With tattooing being as popular as it is today, it is no surprise that there are a large majority of people who eventually decide to have one or multiple tattoos removed. The best way to have them removed is with laser. The most current laser technology is the Q-switch Yag, which can take anywhere from approximately 10-15 treatments. However, the newest tattoo removal laser technology is the Pico laser. This technology should be available next year and can take approximately 4-5 treatments. As with any type of laser treatment, there are always risks involved. The most common risk is incomplete removal of the tattoo, which can happen in approximately 20% of patients. Secondly, there is always the risk of infection, scarring and pigmentation change. For these reasons, it is extremely important to visit with a board certified physician who will be able to monitor your treatments, and therefore reduce the risks associated with tattoo removal.

kay, so what’s all the excitement about paleontology? Isn’t it just a bunch of dust-covered bones? Apparently not. There’s lots of buzz these days surrounding the idea that, in prehistoric times, we humans evolved the perfect diet for our health. More importantly, that the caveman’s diet, which took about two million years to evolve, could still be the most healthful way of eating for us, today.
24
Since the 1970s, research has suggested that modern humanity is genetically best suited to the diet that naturally developed. Since we haven’t really changed genetically since, eating the modern equivalent of such prehistoric foods seems to boost positive health outcomes. So, today we see some encouraging results from diets based on this Paleolithic nutrition idea, sometimes called The Caveman Diet, The Stone Age Diet, or other similar nicknames.
Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
What’s it all about? Basically, huntergatherers relied on wild plants and animals. There was no food-processing in the fridge, for them! What this basically translates into for our day and age is a diet of vegetables, fruit, and nuts, fish, grass-fed pasture-raised meat, plus fungi and roots. Not part of the diet? Grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar and processed oils: all those ‘modern’ inventions that seem to give us so-called ‘diseases of affluence’.
www.spalifemagazine.com
The man credited with the popularity of this diet is Dr. Loren Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet ™: Lose Weight and Get Healthy by Eating the Foods You Were Designed to Eat. With meal plans and recipes to accompany the science behind the lifestyle, the paleo program is readily doable. A leader in Paleolithic nutrition research, he contributed the Foreward to Robb Wolf’s book, The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet. Released in 2010 by this research bio-chemist turned much sought-after coach, this book outlines how to improve your appearance, health and longevity through nutrition, exercise and a few lifestyle changes. Variations of the program and diet are readily available to do solo through the plan available in print, or with support through your gym or spa. Spa Life wanted the inside story on living the Paleo Diet, so we talked to Jenny E. : “My friend Christy put me onto this diet over a year and half ago. She started eating better and following this plan and to date she has lost over a 100 pounds almost 125 pounds to be exact!” Jenny relates how proud everyone was of Christy, and how her life has changed dramatically. “She couldn’t walk far or exercise as she was so over weight,” Jenny relates. “Christy started with eggs for breakfast and fruit as a mid morning snack and a salad and meat for lunch and nuts and coffee or tea for mid afternoon. For dinner it was vegetables and meat - all you can eat basically. So all that weight loss was amazing for her and so it has motivated me! So now I follow it about 90% of the time and have seen a difference for sure. I have lost at least a pant size in two months. My clothes look better and I feel more alive and my digestive system has improved dramatically - my Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS, or spastic colon) has almost vanished. I like this way of life – it’s easy, it doesn’t cost me any extra in food, and I can do it anywhere! I hope a year from now I am still doing this and there is more of a significant change in me,” Jenny says.

xperts say the best way to be active is to choose a common activity that you do every day and enjoy. One of the most common, walking is a practical mode of transportation that’s also aerobic, improving heart, lung and muscle health. Regular brisk walks improve fitness, digestion, blood chemistry, and can help maintain a healthy weight. But wait: all walking is not created equal. One of the most important compo-
26
nents to healthy walking is where you do it. A British study revealed that those walking in the countryside gained added mental health benefits when compared to those who walked for exercise in the mall. It’s becoming well recognized that hiking – defined as an outdoor activity of walking in natural environments – improves energy, is a stress reliever, and helps improve mental health and emotional well-being. Don’t worry! Hiking doesn’t have to mean treacherous terrain, yurt-sleeping, and hauling around heavy packs – although if Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012
you’re up for adventure hiking, there’s a trail out there waiting for you! And, there are lots of resources to help get you started: for example, check out the useful articles at Greg Vincent’s resource for hiking enthusiasts. http://home.golden.net/~gvincent/ Many of us start small, with the local nature trail, and see where that takes us. Better yet, there are lots of spas that feature hiking as a natural part of their wellness programs. What better way to get started hiking, than at a spa?

hen preparing for a hike or long walk the last thing most people think about is the possible effect these activities could have on their body. Yet, there are a few things you should consider before even walking out the door. The impact of every step causes our muscles to contract (pulling on our joints) underneath the load of our body weight, inching us closer to a potential injury.
longer they are left unattended. One simple thing which could help adjust these imbalances is purchasing the appropriate shoes for your specific activity and “gait” (the way you walk). I’d like to encourage you to seek out a local shoe store, where the staff are knowledgeable and can look at your gait, and recommend an appropriate shoe for your body. This should be first on your agenda! Never assume that old ratty pair of circa 1980s shoes will cut it, they won’t. Shoes break down over time, and need to be replaced!
First Consideration: Appropriate Footwear
Second Consideration: Stretching
Take a moment to examine how you walk. Ask yourself some questions: Does my arch cave in, or flatten to the ground? Do my toes point in or out? Does anything hurt when I walk (ankles, knees, hips, or back?) All of these seemingly simple characteristics of your body are actually caused by specific muscle imbalances, and can affect your physical ability and quality of life the
28
This topic is riddled with controversy in the fitness industry. When to stretch, before or after exercise? What types of stretching? Should it be dynamic (stretching with movement) or static (stretching without movement)? As far as injury prevention goes, the answer is: just stretch. Nothing could be simpler. Below are some static stretches which are very effective for hiking! Spalife Magazine Escapes 2012

Quadriceps Stretch
With your left hand against the tree, reach behind you and grab your right ankle. Slowly pull upward until you feel slight discomfort on the front of your leg, then hold for 20 sec. Repeat on the other side.
Hamstring Stretch
Keeping your front leg straight, slowly start to bend your back leg, sitting your hips backward. You should feel the stretch in the back of your front leg. Hold for 20 sec, the repeat on the other side.
Calf Stretch
Similar to the last position, bend the back leg to get your front heel to the intersection of the tree and the ground. Then straighten the back leg and slowly push your hips forward. Never let the front knee bend. You should feel a strong stretch in the calf. Hold for 20 sec, and then switch sides.
Hip Flexor
With your front leg bent, and your hands on the tree, straighten your back leg as far behind you as possible. You should feel this in the front of your hip of the leg that is back. Hold position for 20 sec.
Remember that stretching should never be painful; we should only feel slight discomfort. If we have any pain, stop immediately. You can hold each stretch longer if you wish, especially if you find a specific area tight.

What is the best part about making your own recipes? Absolute control over what goes into your creations. For instance, mix all your personal favorite fruits and grains to create a yummy granola and trail mix. You can try different combinations of fruits and nuts for the ultimate snack. Not only is granola, or trail mix the better alternative, it’s quite simple to put together. Make sure you store your finished product in airtight containers. For bars, be sure to cut them before they cool and get too hard. You can wrap your granola bars to make a sweet gift, and ‘bag’ the trail mix in fancy jars. Whatever suits your fancy, granola bars and trail mix are easy to pack and can be taken along on any hike - it is a favorite among those who love a sweet treat without being too guilty! Makes a perfect pick-upand-go treat - happy trails!
Spa Trail Mix Recipe Ingredients:
2 cups toasted oat cereal rounds 2 cups wheat cereal squares 2 cups bran buds cereal 1 cup dried cranberries 1 cup whole almonds 1 cup banana chips 1 cup toasted-oat cereal squares 1 cup dried pineapple or mango tidbits 1 cup butter 1 cup honey 1 cup apple juice or apple cider
Method:
Preheat oven to 275º. In a sauce pan heat butter until melted add honey and stir for two minutes and add apple juice. Let cool. In a large bowl stir all dry ingredients together and gently pour liquid mixture on top of cereal and stir constantly to evenly distribute the coating. Separate on two to three cooking sheets or deep pans. Bake for 30 minutes. Watch and stir mixture as not to burn. Cool and put in airtight containers. Lasts on shelves for a month and can be frozen.

Fernanda Pimentel, Fernanda’s Beauty and Spa Supplies, Mississauga Ontario
Fernanda Pimentel is the owner of Fernanda’s Beauty and Spa Supplies which happens to be one of Toronto’s largest suppliers to the beauty and spa industry. Fernanda always worked in the beauty business and got her break into the industry in 1991 when a customer asked her to fill a big order, the order was so large (50 spa beds!) that it catapulted Fernanda into business! She started to source and manufacture custom furnishings for beauty salons that then grew into doing the same for spas. She started small. Order after order started to come to her, and soon the word got out that she could find and produce things that other distributors couldn’t. Today, Fernanda’s is a family business. Son Jamie looks after spas and their custom design needs and works with builders, architects and spa consultants. Husband Jim looks after building and retrofitting furnishings and all the shipping and receiving. Their office and store offers weekly courses and classes. Fernanda is proud to offer unique products and is a Canadian distributor and a leading manufacturer and wholesale supplier of quality beauty supplies and major lines that includes esthetic equipment for both Canada and North America. Mari-Claire Watkins, NBW Nature Balance Wellness, Guelph, Ontario
In her former career Mari-Claire Watkins used to run a cellular phone store for one of the country’s major cell phone distributors. In 2003, her life changed when she had a small baby, a small house and a big dream. She longed for her own business that would allow her time to raise her daughter as a single mother while, at the same time, impacting the environment in a positive way. Combining her love for natural soaps and creams and a family background that incorporated herbs, organics and nature into daily life, she decided, in 2003, to begin making soap by hand in her tiny kitchen. Then she took her soap to the Guelph Farmers Market. Then, she got into her 1986 Ford Escort, to drive all over Southern Ontario, selling her soap to health food stores and then to spas. In two short years, with the help of a small, dedicated team, NBW grew from a small soap business to a full-service spa products company, pioneering the use of petroleum- and paraben-free ingredients. She moved her company from being a home-based business into a small production centre with offices. NBW is now a supplier to hundreds of Canadian and US spas from coast to coast. Fast forward: Mari-Claire now married, has 4 children and her passion for health and wellness and the environment is even stronger. Stay tuned as Mari-Claire is now working on her next chapter, she has developed NBW TV!

Spa Marketplace: Peter and Karen Northgraves, Country Home Candle Company
In 1991, Peter Northgraves began making candles with wife Karen, in his kitchen in Tillsonburg, Ontario. Intrigued with scented candles, Peter wanted to develop something ‘more unique and Canadian’. Then they went on the road. Stores began to carry their candles, and it took off from there! They bought an old school house on five acres, built an addition and store, that together surpasses 20,000 sq. feet. They are making over a million scented candles annually, offered in 46 signature scents. It’s what’s made them famous for the last 21 years: their candles are throughout North America, available in stores, spas and inns. As of Fall 2012, they are now being made in the United Kingdom. Made with high quality fragrance oils, custom blended by professional perfumers, the wax is food grade paraffin, and the wick is 100% cotton. (Hint: For a clean burn always trim the wick before lighting. Never burn candles that have a metal wire in the wick, as they might contain lead.) Launching a Personal Care line of hand and body lotions and washes, these two never stop - and now their three grown daughters are joining the business! The Ontario Nail Institute
TONi is a private career college specializing in professional training in the newest nail treatments. The school is owned and operated by Ellen Flood whose credentials include being a Master Nail Technician, and a graduate of the Business and Economics School of Wilfred Laurier University. “Ellen teaches a salon business class, sharing marketing and promotion,” says TONi’s Janet Thompson. The student’s career is their focus. “We offer placement assistance,” says Janet. “Salon owners recognize our facility, and request our graduates.” Classes are taught part-time, in short modules, which make it the affordable choice, and the class schedule a good fit. The facility is “fully equipped for a real salon-like environment,” Janet notes. “We have a vested interest in the success of the student.” The Ontario Nail Institute Cambridge, Ontario 519-885-0422 / 877-528-1491 www.theontarionailinstitute.com

Machael Varricchio, beauty.mark solutions inc.
“Rejuvenation is not just for the skin,” says Machael Varricchio, founder of beauty.mark solutions inc. An authority on cosmetics early in his career, he has followed his passion in aesthetics, beginning his spa consulting and development business. “Nothing ever stays the same and I wanted to be a part of the change,” he says. A full service consulting company, he works with spa professionals: “Our intention is to provide progressive solutions in all facets of the spa business,” says Machael, “employee placement, business development, marketing strategies, and, of course, innovative product/treatment solutions.” The business acts as a constant and convenient resource for spas to stay at the forefront of the spa movement, as it continually evolves.
“Every spa should have a bit of magic that people get excited about and recognize!” Macheal says of choosing the right products and treatments. “It’s a powerful tool that keeps the business progressive, exciting, and for their clients, on the pulse of beauty!” That is why he fell in love with the Intraceuticals cosmetic line, for example. “Start by asking what your clients would like to see,” he recommends. “If you are not happy with the results you are getting – change the methodology!” Remember, ‘rejuvenation is not just for the skin’. www.mybeautymark.ca
Wayne Fraser, Softub Canada
Offering a new generation of hot tub, Softub is a portable and weather-resistant spa technology that makes the luxury of therapeutic water inexpensive, simple and quick to use at your home, b&b, or inn. The Softub operates on regular household current, sets up in minutes, and has designs and colors for every need. Softub Canada’s Wayne Fraser was attracted by the simplicity of the product. The benefit of an expensive hot tub installation is now simplified so that the hot tub experience can be enjoyed by everyone. “The product is cash and carry today, but enjoy tonight!” he says. “The portability has, in the past, and continues to be, the number one attraction for Softub.” Because the Softub is designed to be portable, it is very versatile. “There is no significant outlay of cash required for a hot tub site, such as a concrete pad and special wiring,” explains Wayne. You can put your Softub anywhere, and move it as needed. Inn and b&b owners can easily offer their guests a hot tub for the evening. He notes that travelers looking for a special escape hope for a little extra indulgence, too. “A nice bottle of wine, or a hot tub to add a little romance and relaxation with their night’s stay,” Wayne says, for example. “Many a b&b’s goal is to make the experience of staying with them a little more special than a hotel or motel. Adding one of life’s indulgences such as a hot tub on request certainly does that!” Wayne has always been impressed by the level of satisfaction his product brings to his customers. “Manufacturing a quality product that has stood the test of time in the Canadian climate, and that people truly enjoy makes it all worthwhile,” says Wayne. “What is truly rewarding, is how happy our customers are - we often have Softub owners coming up to us at trade shows ready and willing to offer testimonials on how much they enjoy their Softub!” Softub Canada www.softubcanada.com www.spalifemagazine.com

Fall October 1 – December 31 2012 By Kelly Surtees
Cancer
Aries
An adventurous energy until November 17 encourages you to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself with new training and workout styles. Mars and Pluto combine to help you re-focus on career and life direction goals between mid-November and late December. A set schedule is needed then to balance work and wellness goals.
Taurus
Major transformations are likely in relationships as Mars and Pluto combine between midNovember and late December. From early October Saturn inspires a more creative approach to life, so consider playful workouts like Zumba or group programs. The November 28 eclipse highlights the lungs, so breath-focussed workouts, like yoga, Pilates or swimming, are ideal then.
Leo
With your patron planet Venus in your health and wellness sector between October 28 and November 23, you’re learning to love yourself and value daily rituals that nourish your wellbeing. Beauty and pampering is as important as exercise and eating well. Ensure you’re getting plenty of fresh water for good health. Consider a chromium supplement to help with any sweet cravings.
Saturn and the nodes highlight your home and family life, so new effort and restructuring is required on the domestic front. Consider athome workouts, like exercise DVDs, to ensure you get your training in while still meeting family commitments. Mars combines with Pluto to increase your enthusiasm for exceeding health goals from mid-November to late December. Put yourself first then.
With Saturn having just started a two+ year cycle through your health and wellbeing sector it’s time to get serious about taking care of yourself. You’ll learn new skills and explore the best kind of daily routines for wellness. Be firm about extra commitments – making sure you have time to live well is top priority. Relationship progress is possible in October.
Communication and study are in focus from October, so put effort into making mental goals happen then. You’re intense and keen for results through October, so get obsessive about finding out what you need to know. A diet overhaul or detox is ideal for transforming digestion then. Mercury backtracks in November, making it a great month for review and readjustments.

Capricorn
Libra
A new two-year money cycle starts in October, so it’s time to get serious about financial goals. Exploring the world of DIY beauty and health is important as you’ll discover how much more affordable at-home pampering or training can be. Consider sharing workout costs with a friend, or exploring the great outdoors rather than paying for a gym membership.
Social commitments need reviewing in October as Saturn helps you prioritize your time. Quality time with true friends is more important than seeing acquaintances with whom you have little in common. Extra rest and relaxation is needed under 12th House influences in November, so consider a spa getaway then. Mars in your sign boosts confidence and drive in December.
Scorpio
Saturn enters your sign in October for a two year visit, helping you get serious about What You Really Want. As you reassess and revise your life and goals, you’ll also prioritize time for taking care of yourself. Mars and Pluto combine in November helping you finally take action around long term goals. Endings pave the way for new beginnings.
Sagittarius
Mars in your sign early October to mid November boosts energy and confidence. It’s time to set new workout challenges, as your enthusiasm for progress is high. Focussing on what you can, rather than can’t, do helps you be decisive. Communication could be tricky in November, but Mercury and Venus combine in your sign to help you sweeten relationships and pamper yourself in December.
Aquarius
Saturn enters your career sector in October for a two year cycle which will involve reshaping your professional path. Mars activates your social sector October to mid November so consider group workouts or a girls’ day at the spa then. You’ll want company rather than going solo. December is a month to catch up on rest, as energy levels and motivation are low then.
Pisces
You’re restless for adventure and keen to try new things as Saturn and the nodes energise your 9th House. A change in location is key to keeping workouts interesting. Consider an exotic beauty treatment for something different. Work is a priority in October, with social energy picking up midNovember. Consider hosting a holiday season soirée then.
