our Spas from Alberta have successfully completed the Spa Industry Association of Canada’s rigorous qualification process in 2012, Quality Assurance Approved. Two new spas joining the list are LifeStiles Spa, Edmonton, and Mirage Holistic Spa, Grande Prairie. Renewal is not automatic as spas must re-qualify once their terms expire. Santé Spa and The Spa Ritual, both located in Calgary, were amongst the pioneers of the program in 2009, and continue to carry the designation. “Spa-goers have added confidence and comfort when they interact with a spa displaying the Leading Spas of Canada Quality of Assurance Approved seal because it shows that spa consistently delivers a superior spa experience,” says Spa Industry Association of Canada past president, Diane Sparrow.

8

Spas of all sizes are eligible to participate in this voluntary program, but they must be a member in good standing of the Spa Industry Association of Canada. The other spas achieving or renewing this distinction in 2012 include: Grotto Spa at Tigh-Na-Mara (Parksville, BC) Sante Spa Victoria (Victoria, BC) Haven Spa at Sidney Pier Hotel (Sidney, BC) Island Currents Spa at Sonora (Sonora Island, BC) Mirage Holistic Spa (Grande Prairie, AB) Santé Spa Calgary (Calgary, AB) The Spa Ritual (Calgary, AB) Riverstone Spa, (Winnipeg, MB) Sun Tree Spa at Temple Gardens Mineral Spa (Moose Jaw, SK) Ten Spa (Winnipeg, MB) The Spa Magnolia (Victoria, BC) Vida Spa at Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel (Vancouver, BC)

he other day, I received a note from a friend that read, “You’re doing a terrific job juggling the magazine work, your B&B business and your little spa (yes readers my secret is out) not to mention your young family, I don’t know how you do it!” For the first time in a long time, I thought about the path I plow every day. To be honest, I just kind of put my head down and burrow through. “You have no idea what that means to me!” I replied. That email made me realize how important and valuable a simple ‘Thank You’ can be. In the spirit of a new year and to share the good feelings that were instilled in me, I’d like to take this time to reach out to you our readers and thank you for believing in us here at Spa Life, and reading our magazine. Last year was also a milestone for me. Once you reach 50, you really start thinking about your own health and well-being. The opportunities I’ve had here to investigate and to use the information to change my life have been priceless. In that light I want to tip my hat in particular to my staff. Running a magazine these days is much like pulling a wagon, hard work and thankless. The amazing staff here - my team - they are the heart and soul of this magazine and the reason we remain a top publication is because of their talent, dedication, hard work, and professionalism. They are a wonder to behold! So at this stage in my life when someone asks, ‘Hey what did you get for Christmas?’ or ‘What do you want for your birthday?’ My answer is simply; “I have my health, my loving family and really that is all I want or need.” Many of us are dealing with lots of things - some more than others - and some of us are working twice as hard for half the money. Remember the health and wellness benefits received at a spa are truly amazing. Places like these can make the world a happier, more relaxed, and more beautiful place when you feel better. The gift of wellness and betterment they give their clients is priceless. Like a thank you, so I’ll go first…. to my friends, family, and loved ones, I love you all for your constant kindness, joy, and support. What are you thankful for this year? I encourage you to share your gratitude with your friends, clients, colleagues, and loved ones. That is a gift they will always treasure.

obourg is not your ordinary small Ontario town. While quaint businesses are clustered round its clock tower in a thriving downtown, this community is spreading out and spreading its wings. From the pristine beach and glamorous waterfront, to the first class services, historic accommodations, and luxurious spas, Cobourg is as diverse as it is welcoming. And all the locals will tell you, just an easy drive to or from Toronto, “Cobourg is close enough, yet far enough away.” Erin Wakely, Tourism Coordinator, is as energetic as her town. We begin our tour from Victoria Hall, the National Historic Site, the heart of the town. “You can park and then enjoy everything within three

10

blocks,” Erin points out. She’s not kidding – stores, the pier, restaurants, it’s all here. Including lovely Heaven on Earth Spa. Cobourg, I find out, was founded on its reputation for wellness, and it’s still a health hub, with more wellness practitioners in town per capita, than anywhere else! That’s something that Stephen Della Casa, Innkeeper and owner of The Woodlawn Inn likes to promote. He shares that Cobourg feeling: “It’s comfortable,” he says. “The fit is right.” Dedicated to quality service, Stephen makes sure there’s lots of community information available so guests can find all they’re looking for. Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

A certified sommelier, Stephen hosts a regular Winemakers’ Dinner in the inn’s fine dining room, a treat as an add-on to the romantic couple’s package. Or, if a girls’ getaway is what you have in mind, come to this historic inn’s newest accommodation, The Cottage. A private courtyard leads to two adjoining units that offer Jacuzzi tub, fireplace, fun sitting room, all you need for a gals’ gala weekend! Which brings to mind our next stop on the tour, at Serenity Day Spa. In operation now for 10 years, this warm spa ushers you into the ambience of ancient baths. Including salon services, aesthetics, as well as www.spalifemagazine.com

massage, guests can enjoy the steam room, lounge and even the bistro, to appreciate the full Day Spa experience. Says Wanda Miller, owner and Registered Massage Therapist, “It’s definitely about services and stress relief!” “Wellness can mean different things to different people,” my guide, Erin, explains. “Picnicking with your family in Victoria Park, a day at the beach, strolling the boardwalk, browsing the shops, meeting friends for dinner. It’s all of these things.” A sentiment echoed by many I speak to, including Jenn Hall of Body Balanced Wellness. Not only does this busy mom give yoga and fitness classes at her studio, but she contributes several classes a week at the town’s

www.spalifemagazine.com

impressive community center. She strives to achieve that healthy balance. “We don’t give ourselves enough time to restore,” she tells me. “Yoga can be that one hour when you really devote yourself to you.” Open to drop-ins, she also specializes in retreats given in the area, too! She tells me that in Cobourg you can get to know everyone, while enjoying all the natural spaces. “It’s wonderful to raise kids, here,” she says. “They still go outside to play!”

Breakfast. This grand Greek revival house was built in 1840. B&B host Catheryn Thompson is also a professional caterer. While I roamed the true-to-period décor and took in the antique ambience, our hostess was checking in the boys in the band - a rock-blues group come to stay for the weekend. Only in Cobourg. You’ll just have to come and discover it, yourself!

My tour gave me just a taste of what this town has in store. There was the fabulous lunch at Daizies, the restaurant with the motto, ‘Feel good, it’s fresh’, unexpectedly hip. Cobourg has so much that’s unexpected. Like last stop, MacKechnie House Bed and

A

By Tania Tetreault, Registered Holistic Nutritionist ccording to the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation more than twenty million Canadians suffer from digestive disorders every year. It’s predicted that the problem is statistically under estimated since few people speak openly about their digestive symptoms. The annual attributable health care costs, including lost productivity, is estimated to exceed $18 billion dollars. Moreover, digestive disorders account for 10% of yearly hospitalizations. Unfortunately, Canada ranks highest in incidence rates of gastrointestinal ulceration and inflammatory bowel disease, globally. A common gastrointestinal (GI) complaint is bloating: an abnormal general

12

swelling or increase in diameter of the abdominal area. Symptoms commonly experienced are feelings of fullness and/or tightness of the abdominal area as well as abdominal pain, gastric reflux, distention, lack of motility or GI gas. In order to appreciate the pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal system, commonly referred to as the digestive system, a basic understanding of the structure and organ function is necessary. The upper digestive system consists of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum; while the lower digestive system includes the majority of the small and large intestine. Other organs Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

www.spalifemagazine.com

and glands such as the pancreas, liver and gall bladder are essential for proper digestion to take place. Any of these structures can be compromised by any number of factors - genetics, diet, stress, food intolerance, dietary habits, eating behaviors and microorganisms. One of the most neglected areas of digestion health is the act of chewing. When consulting with clients, I cannot stress enough that digestion starts in the mouth. Saliva is secreted. it contains amylase digestive enzymes. Chewing your food 30-50 times per bite increases secretion of amylase, which enhances the processes. Food travels down the esophagus to the stomach, where further digestion of nutrients takes place. Finally, hydrochloric acid, CCK and pepsin are released which additionally break down foodstuff into chyme. Another common contributing factor of bloating is poor food combinations. In order to optimally absorb nutrients, we need to take into consideration a digestive chemical balance. Starchy foods known as carbohydrates require an alkaline environment, which starts in the mouth. Protein requires an acid base, which takes place in the stomach. An acid and alkaline base neutralizes

www.spalifemagazine.com

each other; therefore, when you combine a carbohydrate and protein, you compromise digestion. This results in undigested food mass, which becomes soil for bacteria. As a result, fermentation may possibly occur within the upper or lower digestive system, causing bloating. The most commonly identified food intolerance is Lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Other foods like wheat may also cause bloating, especially when affected by poor food combinations. In order to clinically diagnose Lactose Intolerance a blood, saliva or stool pH test can be performed. A self-designed test could be performed by establishing a baseline of your existing dietary health status. Then, systematically restrict one specific food item over a 2 week period. Symptoms may occur up to 48 hours after consumption, so it is recommended to observe and record your symptoms daily in order to reliably identify potential intolerances. These commonly overlooked areas of chewing, food combining and food intolerances can potentially lead to more clinical pathological ailments like Leaky Gut, Candidiasis, and Bowel Obstruction. This

Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

can also lead to diagnosed diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Crohn’s Disease and Diverticulosis. If you continue to experience reoccurring GI symptoms such as bloating it is advised to contact and work with a health professional in order to ameliorate symptoms and achieve an optimal level of human digestive functioning.

Not Just for Hippies: 7 Ways Can Help You Stay in

by Heather Embree

M

any people associate Reiki with the Hippie Movement, the time when auras, gurus and liberation of all kinds were opening up in the West. Then, people were realizing their own creative, healing and personal potential. The Reiki Movement introduced people in the West to things like chakras and a spiritual body that expands beyond the physical body. But you don’t have to be a hippie or a spiritual seeker in order to find wholeness. Reiki is a Japanese spiritual practice adapted to an alternative medicine technique in which the transfer of energy through the palms promotes self-healing and

14

equilibrium. Even in just one Reiki session, many things that are out of balance in your life can find a still point, opening you up to solutions to your everyday problems. 1) Do you find yourself overspending or penny pinching? Chances are your root chakra, located at the base of your spine, is blocked with beliefs about money or past experiences with debt and poverty. Balancing this chakra opens you up to giving and receiving abundance in your life, helping you to feel secure, safe and grounded. 2) Feel like life is dull and pointless? Feel stuck? Having a hard time getting pregnant or enjoy sexuality? A balanced sacral chakra, located around the belly button, allows you to manifest projects and circumstances in your life that Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

are sensual, enjoyable and creatively inspiring. 3) Feel like people walk all over you? Or perhaps you feel like people don’t want to be around you. Have a hard time believing in yourself? When the solar plexus chakra, located over your upper stomach, is balanced you feel more harmonious with yourself and others, having a sense of confidence and the strength to meet all of life’s challenges with a good sense of humor. 4) Having a hard time connecting with others? Wish you could go deeper in your intimate relationships? Yearning for Love? Feeling lonely? Balancing the heart chakra, located in the centre of your chest, can do wonders for accessing the feelings of love for yourself and others. www.spalifemagazine.com

5) Afraid of others knowing how you really feel? Are you gossiping too much? Having a hard time finding the “right words”? Balancing the throat chakra, located at the centre of your throat, allows you to speak clearly, listen to others’ truths, and resolves misunderstandings in your relationship to yourself and others. 6) Confused? Overwhelmed? Having a hard time knowing what is right for you? The third eye, located between your eyebrows, is the place where your imagination and intuitive perception resides. Balancing this chakra opens you up to a greater sense of clarity, allowing you to see the ‘big picture’ to solve problems more easily.

www.spalifemagazine.com

7) Feeling lost in life? Cynical? Hopeless? Unsure of what your greater purpose is in the world? The crown chakra, just over top of your head, is considered to be the access point to Universal Wisdom. Balancing this chakra helps you to open up to your soul’s purpose and develop a relationship between your ego and your true self. You become more aware of yourself and your surroundings so you can make clear decisions that are for the greater good. Book a session with a professional Reiki practitioner today to experience the subtle and effective shifts in your life so you can experience a life of clarity, peace and true balance.

teenage or adult acne, eczema, psoriasis,

maintaining firm, vibrant, glowing skin, especially during the winter season.

Poor Diet: Carbohydrate based meals

and high sugar foods such as white bread, rice, and pasta, juice, soda, and artificial

sweeteners all cause a huge spike in blood glucose and insulin levels which cause

containing adequate protein, more fiber

and healthy fats is key to eliminating skin problems.

It is also important to eat foods

rich in antioxidants to prevent cellular

damage and inflammation. Eat more green

vegetables and fruits. Green and White tea is loaded with antioxidants that have anti-

cancer and anti-aging properties. Ask your Naturopathic Doctor if juicing is a good idea or if you need to add a high quality

multivitamin or antioxidant supplement to your regime.

Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency:

Nutritionally, people with skin problems

have a deficiency in Essential Fatty Acid metabolism. Your Naturopathic Doctor

may recommend Evening Primrose Oil, Cod Liver Oil, High EPA Fish Oil, or

Flaxseed Oil. Other Essential Fatty Acids that nourish our skin include Hemp Seed Oil, Coconut Oil, and Grape Seed Oil.

food sensitivities contribute to overall inflammation. Interestingly, current research on many skin conditions,

demonstrate that most people improve

when food sensitivities are identified and avoided.

Sluggish Detoxification: The skin,

liver, gallbladder, kidneys, lungs, lymph, and intestines are all involved in the

elimination of toxins from our bodies. Consider drinking warm water with

lemon every morning and adding lemon or lime slices to your water during the

day. Lemon water contributes to a healthy and balanced pH level since lemon

underproduction of sebum can lead to dry skin and wrinkles. Estrogen maintains

Cancer

With Jupiter in your 12th House of Rest and Retreat downtime is top priority. Gentle exercise that keeps you moving but doesn’t drain you is best, like yoga, swimming or walking. Mars makes you restless between February 3 - March 11, when holidays or new scenery appeals. Venus brings affection and romance in January, so make time for someone special then.

Leo

DIY beauty that you can do at home, or exercise DVDs appeal in January as Venus activates your domestic sector. Combine pampering with staying in, or a spot of redecorating, to honor Venus’ influence then. Aquarius

Scorpio

Domestic responsibilities dominate your January, as you make improvements to your living situation (moving or finally tackling DIY projects), and take the lead in family discussions. Mars activates your fun house from February 3, helping you relax and enjoy yourself. Keep workouts inspiring by playing your favorite music throughout. Creative inspiration peaks so you plan time to let your muses run wild.

Mars in your sign until February 3, gives you an energy and confidence boost. You’ll finally get started on personal plans and projects, and be all the better for it. Put yourself first. Venus’ influence highlights pampering in February, when you’ll crave luxury and be keen to revamp your wardrobe. Sugar cravings might be a problem, so consider a chromium supplement.

Your love life is on pause until the end of January, but once Jupiter gets going then, a special relationship will finally develop. You’ve got plenty of choice in the dating/ relating game now. Keep things interesting by changing routines and trying new things. A short attention span might make focussing in long workouts tricky, so consider circuits or cross training for maximum variety.

Energy levels might be low in January, so rest up then. Yoga and meditation are ideal. A new two year cycle of action starts as Mars enters your sign on February 4. Domestic delays are resolved late January, helping you leave the past behind you. Your ruling planet Jupiter struggles with focus, so variety is key to stay motivated.

very spa is unique in its own way. No doubt you have your favorite – where the staff know you, and where you can enjoy just the right treatment for what ails you. But then, there are those spas that feature something that no other can duplicate: there are the extraordinary! The first public building in the world to incorporate crystal architecture can be found at Sparkling Hill Resort, the brainchild of Swarovsky Crystal patriarch, Gernot Langes-Swarovski. The reflections of lake Okanagan inspired designer Andreas Altmeyer, to meld some three million Swarovsky crystals into the interior and exterior construction of the property to capture the light effects these crystals emanate. Bringing the European approach to whole body wellness, it spearheads this wellness resort that offers KurSpa and its services including the unique cryotherapy. From the German word meaning cure, Kur spa practices involve various mineral and other water treatments. Sparkling Hill’s specialty is the Cold Sauna, KurSpa’s signature treatment. Clients sit in a monitored chamber for three minutes in an environment of -110 degrees Celsius, -166 Fahrenheit. Blood vessels build a

protection zone, maintaining core body temperature for a whole-body effect giving the nervous and circulatory systems a boost. It is thought to alleviate pain and assist with inflammation. To reap the full benefits, a series of treatments are recommended. Sparkling Hill Resort rests in the B.C. mountains, overlooking Lake Okanagan, near Vernon - remarkable indeed. Is there anything worse than having to wait at an airport? Whether it’s between flights, or just the duration of the recommended time you have to arrive before your flight departs, there’s only so much waiting one person can take. Now, imagine a spa right there, ready and waiting to help you pass the time, AND ease that kink in your neck from flying economy. Welcome to AirSpa at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. With three locations in the airport, at US Gate 81, International Gate 51 and Domestic Gate 5, there are a startling number of spa services available to help you through the stress of flying. Enjoy a manicure, pedicure, or facial. Not sure about your boarding time? Just opt for the Express Treatment! Even better, why not take advantage of Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

your half hour wait to squeeze in a muchneeded massage? There are two types of massage offered: table and chair massage. The chair massage is the most flexible, ranging in length from ten minutes to 50 minutes. Certified therapists can work on your areas of tension in your back, neck, shoulders, and more. “Be inspired by the legends of restoration when one seeks and finds the Holy Grail,” is the recommendation of Grail Springs Spa Retreat in Bancroft, Ontario. On the shores of spring-fed Chalice Lake, situated on deposits of quartz crystal and magnetite, the spa occupies a ‘unique healing environment’. The spring water is at the centre of the cuisine, spa therapies and baths, while the magnetic properties of the mineral deposits add to the potent health benefits. In addition, this one hundred-acre wellness sanctuary offers bath water, while the skin absorbs healing minerals. As they will tell you, “Using the mineral springs as a source of inspiration and energy,” Healing Springs Spa at Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa in British Columbia delivers the rest and relaxation that only natural hot springs can deliver. Therapeutic spa offerings include massage, body wraps, with hand and foot treatments, as well. But it wouldn’t be remarkable without the hot springs in mind. In the luxury of their signature treatment suite, you will find the spa’s hot springs mineral baths. Ease into the warmth and soak your cares away, leaving you with a soothing, and rejuvenated sense of well being. Wonderful. Then again, a destination spa creates the ultimate spa experience. And the ultimate destination spa? Iceland, of course, to the Blue Lagoon. elevision host, designer, author, business owner, wife, mother of two kids: welcome to the chaotic but daily reality of Candice Olson. Host of the popular design television series Candice Tells All on W Network in Canada and HGTV in the United States, this perpetual motion woman is still a ‘Prairie girl’ at heart despite her celebrity status. “Would you like a beer?” Olson asks me, as we sit down for the interview. In the crew lounge where she is taping a show episode on location, Olson doesn’t act like a diva, despite the fact that her show is seen in over 115 million households in North America, she is a bestselling author, design columnist for 400plus North American newspapers, and has her own

‘The Candice Olson Collection’, a brand of licensed product lines of furniture, fabric, lighting, bedding and more. Very fit, Olson exudes positive energy and a healthy glow. Can she squeeze in any spa visits, I ask? “I don’t, during the work year but I do on vacation,” Olson replies. She recalls a wonderfully relaxing spa experience in Punta Cana last year in an open air, all-outdoor spa. Spa-ing in Baden Baden, Germany, she adores, and for another compelling reason – her husband Jurji is from there. “It is an experience!” she says. “I don’t think you can top that - to have that sense of history and the natural water emanating from the earth.” She has one tip for future visitors to Baden Baden: “Clothing optional - You just have to

understand about the days when you wear clothes and the days that you don’t.” Olson leaves it open to which days she prefers. Sometimes a good scrub is all she needs. Once sent to a Korean scrub place in Korea town, NYC, Olson recalls fondly, “You walk in and there’s no décor. There’s a lady who strips down to polka dot panties and her bra, and she’s got a bucket and a scrub brush - it was incredible.” It’s hard not to turn off Candice the designer. “To me, it’s lighting. I went to buy my mom a little package for Christmas at a spa. I walked in and I walked out because of the fluorescent lighting.” Olson advises, “It has to be soft and serene. Whether it’s color or textures or lighting it has to be relaxing.”

the bathroom sanctuary awaits. “We have the most fantastic two person shower with bench seating, because I’m a sitter,” muses Olson. “It has a huge rain showerhead in the middle, then each person has four water tiles that are adjustable. The whole thing is a steam shower. It is just the most relaxing experience. I love it.” Family and nature are two essential elements that connect Olson with her sense of wellbeing. And those elements will never go out of style. Candice Olson with writer Chris Ryall

This column could be called, ‘Tales of the Naked and the Stressed’. I confess. I’m a spa addict. I’ve been one for more than 30 years. I need to be kneaded – and wrapped and exfoliated. I was a spa virgin until my late teens when I experienced my first massage given by my friend Sandy. I’ve experienced everything from fish spas and chocolate bean polishes to four-handed massages (my personal fave) and caviar facials, in more than 50 countries, on six continents. And along the way I’ve seen and experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of the spa industry. www.spalifemagazine.com

ancouver Island may well hold the secret to your ideal vacation in luxury. “Tigh-Na-Mara Resort’s owners and partners dreamed of adding an award winning spa to the beautiful natural resort property,” says Paulina Alexander, Spa Director of the Grotto Spa at Tigh-NaMara Resort. “To be successful, they knew they had to not only ensure the spa was unique, but that it be the best,” she explains. The result was one of the largest spas in Canada. But size is not the secret to their successful spa. With their desire to extend your experience well beyond the typical treatment, you can enjoy an expansive Relaxation Lounge, in addition to some of the best treatments experienced, anywhere. “The focal point of the Grotto Spa is a 2,500 square foot Mineral Pool and a striking two-storey water wall, which guests return to enjoy again and again,” Paulina explains. “Grotto Spa guests are encouraged to arrive early, detoxify in the Mineral Pool, enjoy spa treatments, taste

Dear Mary,

I

always recommend that, when redeeming a gift card, be clear on your purchase beforehand, just for this reason. It’s a shame that your first experience proved that old adage. There are some things that a spa should do, too! It’s a good idea for the spa to make sure their clients are aware of changes. Ideally, you should have been told at the time of booking. If you had known beforehand you would have made different choices to equal the amount on the gift card.

I recently had a bad spa experience - I was given a gift card from my children in May 2012. It was for a package that cost $150, so the card was that amount plus taxes. I redeemed it in the fall of 2012 and booked that package. Off I went to enjoy a few hours of bliss ... or so I thought. During my treatment I was asked if I wanted to upgrade my pedicure to add a paraffin treatment and forfeit the polish portion of the pedicure as it worked out to be even money. I said yes, but when I handed my gift card and brochure to the receptionist, she said I owed $72. I was stunned. I asked her why, and she said that the package my children bought had gone up in price, so I owed the difference. They were so adamant that the new price was what I owed that I asked to speak to the manger/owner but she wouldn’t even speak to me about it. The girl at the counter was the only one I could speak to. What else could I have done? D. S. -Southern Ontario

But what really bothers me is the lack of caring on the part of the staff, and that the owner wouldn’t deal with this, or even talk to you. Customer relations is a very important part of running any business, and having a complaint policy is a must to avoid disappointing clients, and losing business as a result. It could be an idea to write to the Better Business Bureau in your area, as you have written to us, here at Spa Life Magazine! www.spalifemagazine.com

Angela Karges is a self professed ‘bargain shopper’ and as a single mother of three every dollar counts. Angela is a lover of spas and when she came to work at SpaLife Magazine it was a match made in spa-la-la land! When asked what is her take on the spa world? Angela’s answer is simple “Spas don’t have to be expensive, a luxury like this can be affordable for everyone, you just have to know when and how to buy! Her love of products and sourcing ‘bargains’ are ‘the thrill of the hunt’ and we of course are thrilled she is sharing her expertise with you, our readers.

et’s be honest, who wouldn’t love to be pampered for a day, or afternoon, or even just an hour...? There is certainly something to be said for having some time to yourself to rejuvenate and relax. This is a sweet luxury that shouldn’t be overlooked because our finances aren’t as copious as we would like, or if we are just a ‘frugal gal’ as I like to refer to myself. It is abundantly satisfying to find that fantastic deal that even makes you - a frugal gal - go wow! The great part is that there are so many great deals out there and it really doesn’t have to take you a lot of extra time to find them. It can be as simple as being added to the mailing list of that great spa downtown that you have always dreamed of going to. This is just what I did when it came to a fabulous pair of spas in the GTA that I now receive emails from on a regular basis. It is the Last Minute Spalife Magazine Luxury 2013

Club through Rosewater Spa and in each email there is a list of treatments and times available, at both locations, for the following day. So if you are able to be spontaneous and willing to save 20% off of their regular prices, then this is an opportunity for you! Even being added to a subscription

to receive monthly specials, which is something most spas offer, is a great way to hear about the ‘treatment of the month’. One of my personal favorites of a monthly newsletter is J Spa in Vancouver BC, which is packed with various savings on treatments over the whole year. The possibilities are up to www.spalifemagazine.com

you with this option and are as simple as adding yourself to a subscription list, which is absolutely free! If you are willing to take some time to search more general websites where there are a number of spas that all advertise their specials, then you may want to try SpaAndTravel. com. Here you are able to find some substantial discounts at spas in most major cities across Canada. Although discounts are large, there is not a wide selection of offers once you are in smaller towns, but it does list spas and provide you with a direct link to their websites. If you are looking for both an overnight getaway and spa visit then the Ontario’s Finest Inns website has a wide selection of various priced options. Most ‘Last Minute Deals’ are for within the next few days up to just over a week away, but you can save over 50% on some packages. I have had the pleasure of staying at a few of these and “Wow” what an experience!

Of course, there is always Wagjag and Groupon and many similar websites that have popped up recently featuring ‘great deals’ on many commodities. Some of these can really be fantastic deals too. I would just warn you to read all the fine print with any of these options and be sure to research the individual spa websites before making your purchase. The few extra minutes you take doing your homework could really make a difference in your final experience.

And after you have found your fabulous deal it comes down to … the outcome. Whether it was a quick mini mani or you were able to indulge and enjoy an evening away along with your spa day, in the end you should feel refreshed and relaxed and completely satisfied. Not only with the fact that you had that special time you deserve to pamper yourself, but also because you are a Frugal SpaGoer.

‘Dedicated to bringing man and spa together’, Bodé Spa’s owner recognized that men were sorely neglected. “Most men are given a can of shaving cream and a razor when they reach puberty and told ‘Time to shave’,” says Manager Eric Trottier. “So you can imagine the lack of education regarding facial skin care, body care - and that’s a major part of Bodé’s mission. When a client comes for a facial, we explain to them what we see and ways to treat their concerns.” Entirely male-specific from the décor and environment, to products and services, it’s all thanks to an experienced team. “We hire capable and motivated individuals who have the expertise,” says Eric. “What makes clients return to Bodé is the attention that we give to them,” he adds.
