H

uey Lewis sang about The Power of Love - he could have easily been talking about the Power of ‘Touch’. I recently enjoyed a weekend at a spa with two friends in the Muskoka region here in Ontario. It was a girls’ getaway with lots of fun, wine, shopping, the works.

That also included lots of talk about husbands, kids, work and everything else under the sun. Good harmless gossip is sometimes a fun thing! We sat and drank wine, had dinner and really shared. I had booked a facial that turned out to be one of the best anti-aging and relaxing facials I have ever had. The cleansing of my skin, the exfoliation and massage that also included my hands and arms, brought such sheer relaxation, I felt so wonderful. It had been a long time since I had a facial. This weekend wasn’t just about the rejuvenation of my face but of my soul, and maybe that is what it takes in today’s stressful world to let go of things we bottle inside, to release it, along with caring for ourselves on the outside. After our facials we all met up in the ladies change room ooohing and ahhing over how great we felt. My one friend had never been to a spa and as she came into the change room she started to cry and hugged me and literally wept that she felt so wonderful, and that this spa experience felt so good. Sometimes we take for granted small gestures, and that they can mean the most. The power of touch is what we humans can do for each other, and that is why the SPA plays such a significant part in our wellness - we all need a little TLC.

Temple Gardens Mineral Spa Resort

ou just never know what you’ll find in Canada’s out of the way places. Take Moose Jaw, for instance. Back in 1910, while drilling for oil and natural gas, miners struck water in an ancient seabed, finding a wealth of geothermal resources. Naturally, that wasn’t the kind of riches they had hoped for. But ingenuity can work wonders, so the story goes, that in the mid-1990s, a handful of volunteer founding directors put $25 dollars into a hat to build what they dreamed would become a world-class destination mineral spa. Today, almost 200,000 visitors come annually, some from around the world, to Temple Gardens Mineral Spa Resort, to enjoy this unique experience. An

artesian well supplies therapeutic mineral water, carrying the soothing warmth of the earth’s core into the indoor and outdoor pools. The waters are endowed with rich restorative properties: Epsom Salts, Glauber’s Salts, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and more. Temple Gardens has developed quite a reputation! Like the ancient seabed far below the town, the mineral spa is the foundation for Temple Gardens Resort, but there is so much more to discover here. “At the Sun Tree Spa, our highly trained spa therapists understand that it is all about guiding our guests on a journey to relaxation,” says Rachel Hardwicke, Spa Manager. A member of Leading Spas of Canada, Sun Tree Spa offers every service to complement the wellness benefits of the resort’s mineral pools. “Whether relaxing Spa Life Magazine Luxury 2011

in the geothermal mineral pool, sipping our super popular Signature herbal tea beverage, or refreshing with a hot mineral-infused aromatherapy towel, our staff will ensure that our clients leave feeling warmed, relaxed and rejuvenated.” Ease into the soft linens, and let professional staff work their wonders on your behalf. Says Rachel, “Our guests receive full access to the eucalyptus steam room and geothermal mineral water, not only when staying at the hotel but also when they visit Temple Gardens to simply have a treatment at the Sun Tree Spa. They then retreat into our Guest Lounge wrapped in a Sun Tree Signature robe to sip herbal tea, have a light snack (complimentary of course)….and relax.”

“Whether relaxing in the geothermal mineral pool, sipping our super popular Signature herbal tea beverage, or refreshing with a hot mineral-infused aromatherapy towel, our staff will ensure that our clients leave feeling warmed, relaxed and rejuvenated.” Quality service and attention to your individual wellness is the spa’s goal. “To our Signature treatments we have added a ‘hand and foot ritual’,” Rachel explains. “Using detoxifying and re-mineralizing seaweed and an holistic blended oil, this treatment focuses on relieving arthritis pain, relaxing stiff muscles, and reducing inflammation and fatigue.” But that’s not all. “Comprehensive skin analysis and www.spalifemagazine.com

the expertise of our professional aestheticians ensures that you receive an effective treatment and an enjoyable experience,” she continues. And, that high standard of service doesn’t end at the spa doors. “To continue the benefits of our professional treatments, quality and results oriented products are also available for your home care regimen,” she says. Quality service and attention to your individual wellness extends throughout the 179-room resort. Come to Harwood’s Dining Room for the gourmet fare, from Sunday Brunch to the Chef’s signature dinner, and enjoy regional and local, fresh produce, the essence of Temple Gardens’ cuisine. In the Morningside Café indulge, guilt free, in their fresh and healthy menu choices.

Coach to Supreme, there is a room to meet your needs and fit your budget. But maybe you’re coming with friends, that someone special. From the Family suites to the Honeymoon suite there is luxury waiting for you. The best, like the Signature Mineral Jacuzzi Suite, offers you a king bed with luxurious linens, and the Jacuzzi for two is filled with the same waters as the mineral pools. Like the miners, way back in 1910, you just never know what you’ll find, but you can be sure your dream of luxury will come true. But so much luxury requires time to enjoy it. Don’t just come for an afternoon, come and stay. Whether it is accommodation for overnight, over the weekend, or for a true vacation, the resort can provide the room or suite you have in mind. From Spa Life Magazine Luxury 2011

Magnolia House Located in Waterdown, Ontario, this spa is the sleeping giant in a little town.

The Briars Spa offers a welcoming and special atmosphere that can accommodate overnight as well as day spa visitors. It all started as a 19th century farm and is now a prominent Canadian resort. It’s a perfect marriage for guests: for those who love to spa and for those who love golf, which is why it is especially popular with couples. Located just an hour from Toronto, The Briars is a family-owned lakeside resort that is well worth the drive, not only for the ‘out of the city experience’ but for a surprisingly beautiful setting with nature, water and trees. Mix all that with great spa treatments and cuisine, it equals a fantastic spa experience!

The spa delivers top quality spa treatments and offers a full spa menu to both men and women. Owner, Gary Campbell says, “I lived in Carlisle about 10 km north - Waterdown was growing back then, in the early 2000s but it’s exploding today, and it seemed like a good fit, for that reason.” The area needed a top quality spa. At the time, the competition wasn’t as fierce as it would have been in other areas. “The building I am in was top notch and fit the calibre of spa that I wanted to represent,” he says. “Today the spa draws clientele from all over, and it offers great touches like ladies’ lunches and teas. Guests say it is well worth the drive!”

It remains a holy place for personal reflection and a place to come to, to achieve a higher sense of well-being. Of course, this being the new millennium, they have upped the ante and instead of living like a monk, in silence and on a hard bed, you stay in a suite, complete with air massage tub right nearby the king-size bed. 709-754-5800 www.monastery-spa.com

asers are just cool. Ever since Flash Gordon we’ve been fascinated by the many uses of amplified light. In the fifty some years since its invention, the laser has become so useful, it’s almost commonplace. Still, not to take this highly specific technology for granted, laser use requires specialized training and know-how, especially in the health care related fields. Consumers also need to know a thing or two before undergoing any procedure involving laser use. Spa Life has looked into the many possibilities, to shed some light on laser therapies available at a spa near you! Lasers used in surgery have become ‘cutting edge’. Used in laparascopy, and eye surgery, as well as general surgical practises, lasers are particularly known for their use in dermatology and cosmetic surgery. We’ve all seen the promotions for laser hair removal, liver spot reduction, and even the removal of tattoos.

Are you stressed-out, overweight, overworked, uninspired, or plagued by negative emotions? Don’t worry - anyone can achieve health and happiness by trying out some new behaviours and attitudes, and working at it step-by-step. Here are nine ways to achieve a fit body and soul in 2012.

Key #1: Balance your responses to the six types of stress. Chronic stress produces high cortisol levels that don’t go away. Chronically high cortisol will make you sick, physically and emotionally. Stress can come from multiple sources including: negative emotions, too little sleep, poor diet, overwork, toxic chemicals, and inflammation. The antidote for stress is balance. Work on finding small ways to reduce excesses and seek more laughter, calmness, and clarity in your life. Key #2: Quiet the mind. Ignoring external chatter and focusing on one thought or a single repetition is an extremely effective tool for dissipating emotional stress and helping shift negative thoughts. Learning to quiet your mind also helps to reduce cortisol levels in your body and increase DHEA, a feelgood hormone that promotes a feeling of serenity. Quieting your mind can help you sleep better, eat more healthfully, and keep work and life pressures in perspective. One of the best ways to quiet your mind is to exercise, especially outside.

Key #4: Reconnect with the spiritual world of nature: Who hasn’t been touched by trees coming to life in the springtime? Having a sense that you and Mother Earth have a special relationship lets you know that everything is as it should be, which makes our souls happy. The more you connect to nature, the more open you will be to its wisdom and calming influence. Key #5: Honour yourself. Self-love is the best way to honour yourself, and the most immediate tool you can use to fortify yourself against negative emotions and instantly transforms “need” into “peace.” One of the factors that eats away at self-love is boredom - with work, with your own repetitious behaviors, with life. Try to find what’s new in the old; seek out new ways of thinking and behaving. Key #6: Know and set the quest. To get somewhere, you first have to know where you want to go. What physical goals are you striving toward? What kind of person do you want to become? Having these answers sets your intentions, helps focus your efforts, and provides you with tangible ways to measure the results. Set small goals. Set yourself up for success; for example, schedule your workouts at a time when you’ll be most likely to do them.

Key #3: Transform fear, anger, and jealousy. Good thoughts lead us to incredible awareness and experiences. Fear, anger, and jealousy hinder our optimal performance. Bite off a smaller chunk of tasks that seem overwhelming. Key #7: Live what you ask for. Get perspective on the real significance of Asking for a healthy soul but choosing your troubles and reactions by being out unsupportive friends will only prevent in nature. Accept the fact that challenge is you from finding peace. Asking for a fit normal and life is not controllable. body, but eating junk foods, will only www.spalifemagazine.com

sabotage your own success. Surround yourself with actions, thoughts, and people who will empower you and allow you to achieve your personal success. Key #8: Slow down to get faster. Most people feel they must push their bodies and souls to the limit to make any gains. Slowing down allows your body to run more efficiently. Apply small focused changes that are gradual versus intense. Key #9: Invite your inner cave man to the table. Our bodies weren’t built to withstand the rapid changes we’ve witnessed in our food industry. The hunting and gathering we once did have turned into drive-throughs, super-sized meals, and chemically laden foods our organs don’t have the ability to use or process. Eating the right amounts of carbohydrates, fats, and protein based on ancient genetics keeps you from eating either too little or too much, both of which cause us to hold onto unwanted and unnecessary body fat. Drink lots of water and eat whole, unprocessed foods. *Shaman-healer Brant Secunda and six-time world champion Ironman Mark Allen are body-soul fitness experts and seminar leaders. Pomegranates are famous for their antioxidant properties and are also a great source of iron. For a nice, light beverage, just add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon with a little honey to a cup of pomegranate juice. And try these Spa-tested recipes, below!

Ask Mary Editor Mary Hughes answers your spa questions. Dear Mary, I am very hyper sensitive to scents and smells and while I long to go to a spa, my aversions holds me back. Any suggestions or recommendations on scent-free spas? Trudy V. British Columbia, Canada Dear Mary, My husband and I are going to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. I would love to take him to a spa BUT my husband is more of the fisherman type and I just can’t see him in a robe, drinking tea. But I would love for him to try it. Can you recommend a place for us to try that isn’t too intimidating? Joan W.

Ontario, Canada

Hi, Joan. Congratulations on 30 years and to the same man!! Well if the two of you can stick together through all those years then I would say he could manage a spa, too. Why don’t you look for one that offers outdoor activities that he likes, as well as spa components that you like? Compromise on a massage for two and let him go do something outdoorsy. And if that goes well, perhaps try a pedicure or facial - you’d be surprised what guys like. I think the initial hesitation is that men just don’t know what to expect at a spa. So lead the way and he will follow. My husband was very hesitant and once he knew what to expect, now he really likes it! There are so many here in Canada to choose from, check out our magazine for ideas of Leading Spas of Canada. Best wishes on your anniversary! 42

Dear Spa Life, I was just at a gorgeous spa in Alberta. I want to know why some spas price services at such different rates for the same service? I think that a $95 pedicure is too expensive. Barbara K. Manitoba, Canada Hi, Barbara. I checked this out and here is what I came up with: Three things can affect the costs. Prices differ because of products used - some cost more than others. The type of service, how long it is, and complicated, etc. For instance, some pedicures can involve a vinotherapy that involves natural ingredients like red wine, and in some instances you get a glass of wine with your pedicure. The second factor is what the spa offers. If it has a pool or hot tubs and they are free for to guests use, then treatments are a little more to help offset the cost of the ‘extras’. And finally, an expensive service spa may have great snacks and beverages in their lounge. Perhaps your pedicure is in a private room and lasts longer and has more treatment time than a $45 pedicure. Always ask the spa why the cost is what it is and what exactly you get for your money if ever in doubt.

Hi, Trudy. While researching your answer I spoke to Geraldine Barrett who is the owner of Sunrise Wellness Spa, in Unity, Saskatchewan. She has been a massage therapist for 31 years. Geraldine says, “Anyone with a scent sensitivity should avoid spas that burn scented candles. People with this type of sensitivity will immediately get a headache or, worse, nausea. We don’t burn scented candles: we burn soy-based candles only. At our spa we use only vegetable and fruit based facial and body products that are not perfumed. We even have a new facial line made from seaweed that smells like seaweed and nothing else. Our spa tries to be as scent-free as we possibly can be, and only use aromatherapy oils at individual clients’ request.” Editors note: Flameless Candles are a great answer to scent free and run on batteries so they’re safe to leave in the treatment room. Dear Spa Life: I have heard of something called Facial Acupuncture. Is that for skin problems, or more an anti-aging treatment? M. McKen, Ontario

Defining Flu Season It actually isn’t a season of more flu viruses being in our environment, it’s the season when people’s immune systems aren’t functioning as well as they did in the spring and summer. When our immune function is low, our bodies don’t fight viruses and bacteria as well as they should. There are wonderful ways to tune up our immune systems using foods. Garlic, onions, cinnamon, cloves, pungent spices, hearty soups, fruits and vegetables, and friendly, live bacteria containing foods like some yogurts, for instance, all promote a healthy immune system. At this time of year many people want to give their immune systems an extra boost with natural supplements. A few of the most common are oregano oil, probiotics, echinacea, vitamins C& D and zinc. You should consult with someone knowledgeable in the use of natural supplements to understand the proper use and dosage of these products.

You know it’s coming – you’ve just experienced the aura that warns you another migraine headache is about to hit. But what can you do about it? Spa Life asked our experts to pass on their tried and true methods to take on a migraine headache, and win!

Chinese medical doctors have used acupuncture and herbs to treat migraine headaches for thousands of years, and this TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) practice has established itself internationally as a widely accepted form of treatment. According to Chinese medical theory, a migraine is caused if the Qi (body energy) flow though the meridians is blocked or imbalanced. By stimulating acupuncture points on the meridians, the blockages can be removed, providing relief. Following a consultation, a knowledgeable TCM practitioner should be able to provide a diagnosis and an individual treatment plan adapted to your body. Migraines can be caused by a range of illnesses, so the diagnosis is based on a series of detailed questions and the assessment of the patient’s tongue and pulse. Treatment can involve acupuncture or Chinese herbs alone, or combined. Some symptoms can be relieved after the first treatment, but more severe or chronic ailments often require multiple treatments. www.spalifemagazine.com

Chinese medicine is also a preventative medicine, and accordingly the practitioner should inform you of foods and activities to avoid, as well as beneficial exercises to perform. Rong Wu has been a Doctor of Acupuncture and TCM since 2000 and a Member of CMAAC(Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada) since 1999. Spa Life Magazine Luxury 2011

There are a variety of reasons why people suffer from migraines. Many times the root cause has never been identified. If you are one of those individuals who comes home exhausted with a migraine, this has probably altered your quality of life. Here are the 5 top underlying causes of migraines: 1) STRESS: is probably the largest contributor. Stress migraines start in late afternoon, with gradual neck pain that extends to the back of the head, neck and temples. Our adrenal glands work 24/ 7 to do an enormous amount of work for the body and they need to be constantly supported. Your Naturopathic Doctor can order an “ Adrenal Stress Index Test”, and begin to support these important glands.

Have your Naturopathic Doctor check your hormone levels and they will work with you to make sure they are balanced. 4) LIVER OVERLOAD: if your liver is a little sluggish then overtime toxins will build up in your system. Regular liver detoxification and support is essential for overall health. People experiencing chronic migraines discover that accumulation of toxins in the body may be a cause. Seek a proper way to detoxify with a licensed Naturopathic Doctor.

5)

V I TA M I N & M I N E R A L DEFICIENCIES: For example, low levels of iron, magnesium, and riboflavin can lead to chronic migraines. Your Naturopathic Doctor will test your vitamin and mineral status and then make sure you are actually absorbing the nutrients and using the correct supplements for you. Your Naturopathic Doctor may also recommend antioxidants, botanical medicine or homeopathic remedies.

2) FOOD SENSITIVITIES: Research has observed that there are common trigger foods, but they may not apply to all headache sufferers. Your Naturopathic Doctor will run a “Food Sensitivity Blood Test”. 3) HORMONES: these types of migraines can start as early as puberty when the body gets an influx of hormonal changes. These symptoms are usually associated with either having too much or not enough of the right hormones.

Dr. Kristin Caria, Naturopathic Doctor, is very passionate about helping others achieve their optimal health, focusing primarily on family medicine. Kristin maintains clinical practices in Guelph at Traditional Homeopathy and in Toronto at Academy Natural Health Clinic.

Hair smoothing treatments are a highly popular and in-demand salon service. What should stylists and consumers know about hair texturizing options? Smooth or Straighten. Smoothers can reduce curl volume and frizziness from 30 to 100 percent. Variants include prior chemical processes, existing hair damage and the degree of natural genetic frizziness and curl. Smoothing effects diminish over time, generally 8 to 12 weeks. Vegan vs. Keratin. Keratin protein comes from animal sources. For those who wish to avoid consuming animal products, look for keratin-free vegan options in the formulation such as proteins from corn, wheat, oats and soybeans. Prior Use of Chemical Processes. Regular use of hot flatiron styling or harsh chemical smoothing treatments can destroy hair. Ensure highest quality results by conducting a pre-treatment www.spalifemagazine.com

client consultation. Strengthen and repair damaged hair with a series of reconstructive protein treatments before scheduling the smoothing session. Safety First. Smoothing treatments use high flatiron heat to open the hair cuticle. For clients with prior chemical processes, there are likely residual chemicals on the hair. These may become an airborne irritant to stylist, client, or others. Check if it is safe for use over color, highlights or bleach. Are gloves, masks, venting or barrier balms on the scalp required? Only some systems are approved for use around or on pregnant women. Maintaining the look. Smoothing treatments will reduce frizz, decrease daily styling time, and eliminate or reduce curl. Client upkeep is essential. Spa Life Magazine Luxury 2011

Aries

Cancer

An extended visit from your patron planet Mars through health conscious Virgo – lasting until June – helps you get organised and focus on details. Digestive health is in the spotlight so consider supportive enzymes or a probiotic for maximum wellness. Tone arms and improve breathing with Pilates or active yoga. Pluto’s influence mid-March gives you the power to make major transformations.

Jupiter helps you expand your social circle and connect with a wider variety of people this season. Social connections that emerged in late 2011 now develop into new friends and positive support networks. Group training appeals as you’ll want to carry the social energy as far as possible. Under the Sun’s influence from March 21 – April 19 work must come first.

Taurus

Leo

Your creative energy peaks between Jan 15 – Feb 8 so consider dance and art classes then. Swimming or spa sports are ideal too, and since you’re feeling social, include your friends. Time out for rest and rejuvenation is key late February. Splurge on quality food and pampering between March 6 – April 3. Manage sugar or carb cravings with chromium and lots of fresh fruit.

Mars invites you to overhaul your finances. Revise and redo your budget and savings plans for maximum impact. Relationships are in focus under the Sun’s influence January 21 – February 19 making it important to put significant others first then. Water sports are ideal under Neptune’s influence mid-February, but you’ll resist routines as Uranus brings out your independent side on March 25.

Gemini You’re restless between January 28 and February 13 and will want added excitement then. Spice up your workouts with an exotic new technique or class. Neptune makes you romantic February 14 so be sure to show your feelings then. Having freedom is important under Uranus’ influence March 6 and 18 - keep your schedule flexible and be spontaneous with wellness.

54

Virgo With Mars now retrograde in your sign you have a rare opportunity for second chances. Make peace with your past and accept the present. Energy levels are high so think high intensity training and an assertive attitude. Venus boosts romantic prospects from Jan 15 – February 8, while Jupiter encourages travel, adventure and study plans. Trying new things brings you luck!

Libra

Capricorn

Rest and relaxation are key between Jan 15 and Feb 9 so allow yourself time to unwind. Gentle stretching or meditation is ideal then. You’re focussed on love through February but Mercury’s retro influence in March indicates misunderstandings are likely with loved ones. Double check details and repeat yourself to ensure your message is heard. March 14 brings luck and opportunities your way.

February 6 and March 14 represent turning points, where slowing down to reconsider your options is worthwhile. By mid-March, you’ll have extra power and influence so plan major decisions for then. Kidney and thyroid health are spotlighted by Saturn so make sure you’re getting plenty of good quality water. Manage sweet cravings with iodine or chromium and aim for better life balance in all areas.

Scorpio You’re focussed on reorganising and dealing with details this season, which also means you’ll want to sort out a sustainable health routine once and for all. Practicality is key so consider short workouts you can do regularly. Diet is also in focus as you strive to purify your body from the inside out. Consider digestive supports like enzymes, magnesium or fresh lemon in hot water before meals.

Aquarius The Sun in your sign gives you charm and confidence from January 21 – February 19. Heart health is in focus so consider circuits for circulation and ensure you’re getting enough iron. Growth and expansion is possible at home and with family as Venus helps sweeten your domestic life and relationships through March, which is also a great time for redecorating.

Sagittarius

Pisces

Mars helps you overhaul career, though you may have to deal with professional delays. Use unexpected extra time to consider if where you’re headed is really where you want to go. Second chances are possible. Your metabolism could be sluggish so cut down sugar, fats and starches. Consider weights for extra energy and improved circulation. March 14 is your lucky day.

Mars’ extended visit to your relationship sector helps you reorganise key relationships. Take charge to get what you want. With sensitive Neptune in your sign from February 4 you’ll seek inspiration. Staying grounded is key and regular gentle exercise like walking, yoga and stretching helps you focus on practical reality. Confusion is likely under Mercury’s influence late March so avoid making decisions then.

Baking soda is an amazingly safe way to clean your living space. Non toxic, as an added bonus it’s relatively cheap. Baking soda is fantastic at absorbing odours. If you have a stinky garbage can in your kitchen, sprinkle some baking soda in it every once in a while to help eliminate odour. Use baking soda to get rid of baked-in odours on plastic containers: simply fill your sink with warm water and one quarter cup of baking soda and allow your containers to soak over night. If you’re experiencing an odd smell coming from your drains, pour some baking soda down the drain and flush it through with hot water several times a month to ensure fresh smelling drains. Baking soda also works wonderfully to clean surface areas. Whether it is a counter top, a floor, tiles and even carpets, baking soda and water work like magic. For counter tops and floor tiles, mix baking soda into a paste, scrub and wipe off with a clean, wet cloth. To remove a fresh stain on your carpet, simply sprinkle baking soda onto the stain, and blot it to lift the stain, then proceed to clean the carpet as desired. Try baking soda with vinegar, in your toilet bowl to remove stains, rust, or calcium deposits, too. Baking soda is a great multi-purpose cleaning tool! Another fact about baking soda: if you experience a small grease fire in your kitchen while cooking, pouring baking soda on top of the grease fire will put it out. Start using baking soda to clean, freshen and transform your home or business! 56

The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils: The Science of Advanced Aromatherapy By Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph. D.

Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt’s new book, The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils explores the healing ability of aromatherapy and essential oils. It examines the idea that essential oils aromatherapy can be used as an alternative to promote improved immunity and as a treatment of degenerative diseases. The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils explains the growing scientific understanding of using essential oils and natural products as an effective agent against a broader spectrum of infections, and that they can be more effective than some prescription drugs. This book provides valuable knowledge on the power of herbal medicines. http://store.innertraditions.com/isbn/ 978-1-59477-425-6
