Leading mobile couponing app, Yowza!!, brings this idea to life by delivering real-time, location-based mobile coupons directly to consumers’ smartphones. Spas like Blue Medi Spa and The Massage Place are utilizing the technology to create fully customizable e-coupons/announcements that target relevant customers in their area. This means spas can target individuals in their immediate area with completely customized deals, offers and announcements about new treatments. And, unlike traditional coupon advertisements, Yowza!! allows spas to track the efficacy of their mobile coupons, so they know it’s working. Thanks, Maddison Paton Spalife Romance 2012

ho doesn’t love to get pampered and go to a spa? Spas are a full time love of mine and I hope they will be forever. Over the last two years, we have seen a growing trend in the spa business: we see advertising and daily deals for coupon clubs and Groupon deals and spas are
While I think these kinds of deals and specials have a place, and that they can be good for the slower times and off-seasons, they can also be dangerous in the long run. Spas are expensive businesses to open and maintain. Spas are staff–dependent, and the supplies and overhead are costly, making spas a higher-end business to operate. This said, I must admit, I love a deal. Who doesn’t? So, aside from these coupons and deals spa-goers can discover another way to save! Aesthetic schools: Now they are a great deal! The prices are low, and students get to practice their newly learned skills on clients. It’s win-win! I recently visited a school in Waterloo, Ontario, and had a full leg wax and a pedicure. The cost was less than half of what it would be, elsewhere. Now you have to be willing to go the extra mile and realize it is not a full-blown luxury spa you are going to. I was greeted warmly. My coat was hung up for me and I was taken to change. I entered a large treatment room. There were several treatment beds in one large room. Many customers were getting facials or waxing at the same time, so don’t feel shy! And be prepared for men and ladies to share the same room. Luckily you are covered up and not ‘exposed’. After the waxing, I got dressed and went into the pedicure side and had a very nice pedicure. The student aesthetician was very nice and attentive. The good news is that they are open to comments, and critique, and suggestions. Schools are a great way to get a good treatment at a great price, and you are also helping students learn to become the best in their chosen field!

t’s about time, isn’t it? Imagine how wonderful it would be to discover a place where time slows down, where you and your special someone can really be together. This little island of time in paradise is what I happened upon, coming to Spa Fairmont Le Château Montebello. A hour’s scenic drive from Ottawa/ Gatineau or Montreal, the village of Montebello rests on the shores of the Ottawa River, in the Outaouais Region of Quebec. When looking for a destination spa, look no further than Outaouais, with its amazing variety of activities and splendid hospitality. Here, it is Fairmont Le Château Montebello, a resort offering all sorts of recreation, quiet time, or what you will. This one and only Château welcomes you into the grand cedar log lodge, warm and inviting. Don’t let the scale fool you, for its largesse, you will find the personal touch. All Château Montebello staff work hard to meet expectations, right down to the immediacy of social media, like Twitter and Facebook. “We always respond to guests,” says Nathalie Beauchamp, director of sales and marketing for Le Château. “Our guests’ experience is an extraordinarily personal connection.” Every stay here is a different one.
8
You’ll be surprised by the versatility of the resort’s choices. Try your hand at clay shooting in summer, dog sledding in winter. Enjoy skating, tubing, yearround fishing, swimming, and hiking. Then, there’s the golf. And even the Land Rover Driving School. There’s no reason why you both can’t enjoy down time. Of course, that includes the spa experience. In fact, men flock to the relaxation that the Spa offers. What a perfect way for your guy to be introduced to the benefits that spa-ing has to offer. Sylvie Legault, the spa’s director, recommends their couples’ services, for that reason. “It is a good way to experience Spa Fairmont Le Château Montebello for your first time, with your wife,” she says. “You’ll be comfortable, side by side!” And the staff at the Spa are all about their guests’ comfort. Always a friendly greeting, whether you’re a newcomer or an old hand, every guest is guided carefully through the spa experience. Details are happily explained. Questions are thoroughly answered. You’re never rushed. Imagine! Planes, trains, automobiles – everywhere life is on the move, but not here. I found a whole new time zone thanks to the Spa’s signature Green Blanket Body Wrap. Snug in the spa robe, you come to the quiet, Spalife Romance 2012
candlelit treatment room, complete with its own rain shower. (The B.Kamins skincare product quality goes hand in hand with the quality of treatment, too.) A light, introductory massage, gentle exfoliation using rice and kaolin, helps you slip out of the fast lane. A step into the warmth of the shower is followed by the maple extract body butter massage, and you are cocooned in the green blanket to drift in sleep, during the soothing scalp massage. There wasn’t a muscle in my body that didn’t sigh in relief. And, at all times, my treatment specialist made www.spalifemagazine.com

sure that I was at ease, ensuring privacy, as well. At last, the moisturizing massage, and afterward? Robe-wrapped, I enjoyed tea, juice, and snacks, before the fireplace in the relaxation room, Salon La Clairière, for as long as I wanted. Ahhh. This bliss is even available for two, in Salon la Source, the couples’ suite. There, couples can enjoy a glass of champagne together, before the suite’s fireplace, during their Rekindle the Flame Package, for example. “We prepare the room,” Sylvie explains. “Alone in the suite for an hour, to begin, they exfoliate one another, and then go into the Japanese Bath, finished with rose petals. We prepare a facial mask, too. They apply the clay mask for each other, too, it’s so fun for them to do that!” she says. Lastly, staff arrive to provide the couple’s side by side massage. accommodation, gourmet dining, golf and spa-ing, at a special price to introduce you to all the amenities. Hungering for gourmet fine dining, par excellence? It’s Fairmont Le Château Montebello’s specialité: imagine how delighted you’ll be that the Spa has its own gourmet menu. The two of you can stay and relax all day. Enjoy Scandinavian Atlantic Salmon, or Tandoori Chicken Supreme, even a vegetarian delight. From the appetizer through dessert, ease your way through lunch, together, overlooking views of the Ottawa River. If you want to sample the region’s maple specialties, indulge yourselves in the restaurant, Aux Chantignoles, offering heavenly maple crêpes, and so much more.
in the Spa’s own protocols. “All our staff are helping, checking, asking,” says Sylvie, who always expresses her pride in her staff. I had to let her know that her staff has spoiled me, now, for any other attempt at relaxation. How can anything beat paradise where time slows down, and you slow right down with it? hat do you think of, when you think Nordic? Vikings striking the easterly shores of Canada a thousand years ago? Alpine skiing, extreme sports, and K2? Of course, I think of spas: Nordic spas, to be exact. A shiver of anticipation runs up my spine: relaxing steam or dry sauna heat, invigorating hot and cold water plunges, then a roll in the snow to wake up! Cultures from around the world and throughout history have used water of varying kinds, and at all temperatures to cleanse, heal, and rejuvenate the human body and soul. The process usually employs several cycles of alternating heat and cold, warming
10
BleuSpa, Cantley, Qc the body to begin, followed by a cold rinse. Heat methods often use the dry Finnish style of Sauna, or the humidity of the Hammam or Turkish Bath. To cool, showers or waterfalls may be used, cold plunge pools or a Nordic Bath, or even, in season, a frolic in the snow, outdoors. Health benefits have been touted across the centuries. It’s believed that heat promotes blood flow, increased oxygen circulation, endorphin production, and sweats relieve the body of toxins for a thorough cleanse. A brief but vigorous rinse in the cold refreshes, and closes the pores of the skin. Repeating the cycles two or three times promotes a deep relaxation that can’t be experienced through ordinary leisure or rest. More health benefits have been attributed to the kind of deep relaxation that this

water therapy brings about: improved sleep, relief from cold, flu and some respiratory symptoms, relief of muscle pain, and even healthier skin. Combine the ages’ old tried and true, with our modern spa experiences of therapeutic massage, and more, and you have the ideal opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation. Too good to be true? Not so! Across Canada, spas can be found that offer this Nordic or Scandinavian Baths experience. Many present a full retreat experience that offers several choices of water therapy, as well as deliciously healthy food served on site in a relaxing atmosphere. Accommodations may even tempt you to extend your respite from the crazy world. Taking the time to relax is all part of the prescription for well-being, Nordic style!

n the 1870s, Dr. Frank Sibbald fell in love at first sight with a majestic house built on the shores of Lake Simcoe, Ontario. He was a wealthy doctor, who had great enthusiasm for entertaining, and loved people and parties. He expanded the house, filled it with treasures, and welcomed guests for the most of his life. Little did he know that very same house would evolve into a sophisticated country inn resort, while still remaining in the Sibbald family. Today, the doctor would be astonished to see its transformation into 86 accommodations, restaurants, a golf course and spa. The Briars Resort and Spa is one of Canada’s leading destinations. There is something for everyone here, as I discovered on my recent visit.
Today, fourth and fifth generation Sibbald family are welcoming new and returning guests. The uniqueness of The Briars Resort and Spa stands out as an all-encompassing romantic destination, especially if you suffer from opposites attracting like most of us do. I like to sit and relax, while my better half likes to be busy. I found a remedy at The Briars! The old cliché there is something for to venture far. Before turning in you can always head for a nightcap at the Drinkwaters Lounge. Pencil in your calendar! Saturday nights are for the romantic at heart as couples dine by candlelight and dance the night away! Dinner and dancing is a pleasure that few of us have time to enjoy these days. It puts those dance lessons to good work! This extensive property is surprisingly intimate with all the private nooks and hidden corners you’ll discover. Many couples comment on the gracious dining room, and it, too, has private corners with tables for two. Chef Trevor Ledlie has been tantalizing taste buds here for 12 years. The menu is extensive and proudly features locally grown www.spalifemagazine.com
The accommodations are abundant in choice. Guest rooms in the original main house offer a New England style charm, including rooms with balconies and fireplaces. For the ultimate seclusion for you and your sweetheart, the Cottages have private patios, fireplaces, golf course, lake and woodlands views. Each night after dinner there is a roaring fire outside the dining room surrounded by Muskoka chairs. Guests love to come and sit by the fire, enjoy a drink and even toast a marshmallow! Wherever you are in your life together - a new couple or a well-seasoned pair – you can relax knowing the Briars has been welcoming guests since 1880, and has stood the test of time. itting inside a beehiveshaped oven with the heat growing by the minute, I finally understood how the wicked witch must have felt after she was tossed into the oven by Hansel and Gretel. At least I wasn’t alone. With me inside the brick chamber was Patricia Mendoza Cruz, a third generation temazcalera or shaman. We were in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Oaxaca City, in south-western Mexico, and I was about to begin a temazcal treatment, an herbal steam bath ritual that dates back 1,500 years. I hoped the ancient ceremony, said to hold curative powers, would rid me of a lingering head cold. Cruz was preparing an herbal tea. It was

comprised of six medicinal herbs. Some, such as rue (a stinky herb often used to ward off the evil eye), I was familiar with. Others, such as poleo (known as the hangover herb) were new. She placed a corona or crown of flowers on my head and laid additional boughs of herbs across the hot rocks. As she doused them with the hot herbal tea, a richly scented steam rose and filled the room. “By sweating, the body releases toxins and becomes purified physically and spiritually,” she explained in Spanish. “We call upon the four elements - earth, water, air and fire – to aid us,” she said. Motioning me to stand, she took what appeared to be a broom-sized bouquet of wet herbs and began brushing my body as though basting a gigantic roast chicken. “Gracias por todo Spalife Romance 2012
the good and the bad,” Cruz chanted. Then, she slowly poured fragrant herbal tea over my head until it cascaded down my body to disappear into the stone floor. Following several more dousings with herbal water, I was left alone to meditate. Cruz peeked in, like a baker checking a batch of cookies. “Not too hot?” she asked. After hearing it had been only ten minutes out of the recommended twenty-five, I decided to tough it out a little longer. Rooted in pre-Hispanic traditions, the sacred baths have been used by the Aztecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs and Nahuatl Mayans. After several more steaming and cleansing sessions, the first stage of my treatment was complete. It was then time for my therapia de

rebosa or massage. A mixteco – zapoteco massage is a little like doing yoga while wrapped in a tablecloth. After a rigorous body massage using oil infused with aromatic fragrances, I was wrapped naked in a sheet and slung over Cruz’s shoulders. She pulled and pushed the fabric as though working a loom. It seemed the perfect activity for lazy athletes as I emerged feeling supple without having done any work. “You should have a shot of mescal to complete the experience,” advised Cruz, as I showered. Already feeling energized, I decided to pass on the potent agave-based liquor and instead stepped out onto the cobblestone streets. I immediately felt transported to another era. Around me, the 16th century architectural gems seemed to glow with a golden hue in the late afternoon sun. My head cold was miraculously gone. When in Oaxaca, I was thinking…. But the cold rebounded with a vengeance the next day. I learned an ancient lesson: Next time, have a shot of mescal. www.spalifemagazine.com

You have an opportunity here! But, on the last occasion that you tried a little together time at home, you lost count of the interruptions. At the movies you look at the screen, not each other. Having dinner out at a restaurant, you have to behave. But what to do?
Then you remember your favorite spa offers couples’ treatments. A fast look on the Internet reveals that it just happens to be open during the evening. Surprised? You shouldn’t be -- couples are taking more and more advantage of the spa environment and the many services available. Talk about killing two birds with one stone: don’t you both need a little stress relief along with your quality time together? Instead of hockey or ballet practice, laundry and garbage night, imagine a couple of hours that involve being pampered, together! Manicure, of course. Warm paraffin, hand and arm massage, a chance to sit and chat together. Now, that’s a date! But what if the stress level is high, and stronger measures are needed? That calls for Swedish massage and a classic English facial for two at the Old Mill Inn and Spa, in Toronto. Maybe you’d like a little late dinner after you relax. Why not try out the hour-long Warm Pebble Massage, side-byside at the Amerispa, in Montréal, at Hotel Omni Mont Royal, and then head out to your favorite restaurant? Westerners can look forward to the Couples Retreat package at the new Sante Spa at Hotel Le Germain, in downtown Calgary. In their Renew Couples’ Suite enjoy aromatic relaxation massage together in candlelight, followed by a bottle of champagne, chocolate truffles, and some privacy just for the two of you, in front of the fireplace. At Sante Spa Victoria, couples can choose the Crystal Suite, and customize a package to take full advantage of all the amenities, including the soaker tub.
No matter where you are, there is a spa waiting for you. Date Night is all about the two of you. Where better to escape to, than someplace devoted to making your time together the best it can be? Seize the day -or rather, the evening, and head out to your local spa.

f you think about it, some of our tried and true home remedies would sound a bit odd, if you had to explain them to someone who wasn’t ‘from around here’: those slices of cucumber sitting over your eyes, for example. Well, regarding the cucumber thing, those slices are mostly water, which provide hydration to dry skin. Plus, since we usually keep them in a cold cellar or refrigerator, the cold temperature of the cucumber slows blood flow to that area, cutting down on puffiness. So, a cucumber treatment for those tired eyes, before bed, can be just the thing. Spalife went digging to find out some of the weird and wacky treatments available

out there in case you’re looking for a change of pace from your regular spa visit. What we found was surprising! The most famous ‘alternative’ spa treatment is probably the Doctor Fish Pedicure. The Garra Rufa Carp, or Doctor Fish is found in the middle and far east. Well known for being toothless, this fish gums away at surfaces for its food. Used for therapeutic reasons, these fish can nibble away dead skin to leave smooth and healthy skin behind. Presto, The Doctor Fish Pedicure: spa customers soak their feet in water filled with these fish, which nibble away at toes and so on, while they relax. A staple of spa treatments in some countries, it remains a novelty in Canada, although it is available Spalife Romance 2012
in some areas. Its failure to catch on here is largely due to hygiene concerns. As one web-ask site put it, “How can you disinfect a fish?” Ratamokshana, or ‘therapeutic blood letting’ is alive and well at a spa near you. This ancient practise involving the use of leeches has come back into favour, largely via Ayurevedic traditions. As a detox, the leeches suck infected blood while salivating an enzyme which is reputed to have an effect on toxic blood clots. Spas in Canada have begun to offer this treatment, as an effective measure for anti-aging. while the Ayurvedic tradition has that it can be effective against skin diseases, inflammation and osteo-arthritis. A specific type of leech is www.spalifemagazine.com
used and the treatment varies in length from 30 minutes to one hour. The Geisha Facial is the next big thing making the internet and media rounds as a new spa treatment. It sounds far more attractive than it is! It’s also known as the ‘Bird Poop’ Facial. Made famous by Shizuka Spa in New York City, in the Japanese tradition, the dried excrement of the nightingale is combined with other traditional ingredients, including rice bran. The nightingale droppings are reputed to be high in urea, an element that locks moisture in the skin, as well as other chemical properties that make it beneficial. Slow to come north to Canada, rumours are flying of the bird poop facial’s availability in salons, here. www.spalifemagazine.com
Then, there are the food favorites. The treats we love to eat seem a natural ingredient for the relaxing experience of a spa treatment. It won’t take you long to find the vinotherapy body wrap, in spas from wine country. Quebec spas specialize in maple butter experiences. Whether your vice is chocolate or wasabi, there is a treatment for your skin just waiting at the spa. The newest taste in spas comes to us via the Czech Republic. The Beer Bath is a variation on being an old soak, for sure. Whether you choose the dark beer and mineral water combo, or the malt draft option, you’ll be taking advantage of the vitamins, proteins, and keratin found in barley. And, as long as you’re legal drinking age, most spas will Spalife Magazine Romance 2012
offer you a cold one, while you soak. The long list of weird and wacky spa treatments runs from the exotic to the ridiculous. And many are definitely an acquired preference - somehow allowing several snakes to massage your back, simultaneously, won’t sit well with everyone. But you’ll have to admit that a snake massage sure makes those cucumber slices seem pretty tame!

ccording to legend, Shennong, the celebrated emperor of China, was outside drinking boiling water some 5000 years ago when leaves from a nearby tree fell into it. He sipped the coloured liquid and was so impressed with its flavour and restorative properties that he encouraged all his people to enjoy the drink. Today, tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world, after water. Tea is not only far safer than straight-up H2O because it’s brewed with boiling water, it’s also healthy! Green tea, Oolong tea and black tea

By Catherine Harding-La – sold as dried leaves and in teabags – all come from Camellia sinensis, an evergreen indigenous to Southeast Asia. The more oxidation the tea undergoes during processing, the darker, the more aromatic and the more caffeine-rich the tea becomes. The caffeine in tea, about 20 to 40 mg per serving, is much less than the 100 to 120 mg found in a cup of coffee. That small jolt may be enough to boost your exercise endurance and help you to lose weight. Moreover, green tea hydrates the body and provides catechins that may protect against infections, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Finnish and Japanese scientists have also discovered that tea drinkers are less likely to be depressed than non-tea drinkers.
Flowering tea is a collection of tea leaves and blossoms that are sewn together and shaped into a ball. When placed in boiling water, the contents open up, much like a blooming flower. Each flower has unique healing powers: jasmine refreshes the senses, lavender reduces tension and depression, and chrysanthemum lowers blood pressure, detoxifies the blood, clears congestion and cools the body.

Herbal teas, or tisanes, are made by diffusing fresh or dried plants – other than Camellia sinensis – in boiling water to release their medicinal properties. St. John’s wort is widely made into an herbal tea to treat mild depression. Allspice, chamomile, peppermint and kava kava herbal
honey, if desired. Do note that pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid herbal treatments. Some remedies, such as St. John’s wort, also interfere with prescription drugs, including anti-depressants and oral contraceptives. For millennia, the Chinese have used ginseng to rejuvenate and treat a wide range of ailments. Ginseng tea is made from the
teas are also mood-enhancing. A number of plants reputedly ease nausea, vomiting, indigestion, bloating, flatulence, diarrhea and constipation. These include dried peppermint, parsley and catnip. You can make your own infusions to treat gastrointestinal upset with ingredients found in your pantry: seeds – caraway, cardamom, dill, flax; spices – allspice and turmeric. Simply mix one to two teaspoons of crushed seeds or powdered spices in boiling water and add a little
root of a plant with the botanical name panax, Greek for “cure all”, and is the origin of our word “panacea.” It is believed to help build up an appetite, aid digestion, reduce bad cholesterol and the effects of Crohn’s
disease, and to cure diarrhea and stomach ulcers. South African rooibos tea, pronounced roy boss, comes from an Afrikaans word meaning “red bush.” This red herb is mixed with Indian chai spices, such as cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, bay leaves, ginger, vanilla and cloves and is recommended for people suffering from insomnia, nervous
tension, mild depression, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Unlike other teas, rooibos tea contains calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc and fluoride. It has no caffeine, making it calming to the nervous system. Low in tannins, rooibos tea does not interfere with the body’s absorption of iron and proteins. Applied topically, it soothes itchy skin. After introducing the Chinese to tea, Shennong became the father of Chinese medicine. He experimented with a number of herbs, found some to be poisonous, and used tea as an antidote. Scientists are now beginning to understand more about the healing powers of tea and herbal teas. Answers to some of our everyday health concerns are in the bag – a tea bag, that is!

Humans and apes – what don’t we have in common, even the need for a relaxing massage! Apes groom each other and so do humans. In fact, whether animal or human, there’s nothing like a good body rub. After all, massage is “an extension of a basic instinct seen in animals and humans,” says Clare Maxwell-Hudson in the preface of Handbook of Clinical Massage (Elsevier Health Sciences, 2004). Unlike the animal kingdom, however, we bipeds have developed massage both as an art form in its application and a welcome eco-friendly science in its technique. Although the word, massage, comes from the Greek, masso, meaning “to knead”, artifact discoveries and cave wall etchings reveal that earlier prehistoric peoples used ointments and herbs, not only to ward off
32
injury and infection, but also in massage to promote well-being. The Nei Ching, a Chinese medical text, is the earliest recorded reference of massage, written before 2500 BC. Hippocrates in 480 BC wrote extensively about massage and its benefits, while Avicenna of Arabia expounded the importance of herbal friction massage, exercise and hydrotherapy in the 10th century AD. Ambrose Pare in the 19th century developed Swedish massage, borrowing the best techniques from a variety of ancient cultures. During WWI and WWII, shell-shocked soldiers were administered massage as a prescribed treatment. The list goes on. Interestingly, massage fell from grace during the 1960s and ‘70s, thanks to the rise of red-light status massage parlours and, also, new pharmaceuticals on the market, Spalife Romance 2012
breakthrough antibiotics, and new timesaving techno-scientific bells and whistles. Today, the trials and errors of medication have made us wiser consumers. The need for an eco-friendly world has extended, microcosmically, to our bodies. From this standpoint, it is logical that massage would make a comeback – and what a homecoming it has received! One US report states that consumers spend $2 – $4 billion a year on visits to massage therapists, and 54 percent of primary care physicians and family practitioners refer their patients to a massage therapist. This resurgence of massage has opened the door for new professional standards, education and delivery, in order to meet the growing demand. Believe it or not, yogurt can surprise you. We all know that yogurt is good for you. A dairy product made from the bacterial fermentation of milk, it is a rich source of calcium, protein, vitamin B, and more. What you may not know is that, thanks to bacterial action on the lactose, which converts much of it to lactic acid, yogurt may be eaten by those who are lactose intolerant. What many people don’t know is how much yogurt can contribute to your recipe box, too. Check out these marvelous recipes, all taking advantage of yogurt to spice up your life.
Spa Yogurt Cheese Yogurt cheese is very easy to make, is low in fat and keeps for up to two weeks in the refrigerator. It has a slightly tangy taste and the consistency of soft cream cheese. Makes 1½ cups (360 ml)
Ingredients: Basic Recipe
2 cups (475 ml) 4% plain yogurt Herbed and Spiced Yogurt Cheese Balls: 3 tbsp (45 ml) minced chives 3 tbsp (45 ml) ground sumac 3 tbsp (45 ml) coarsely ground black pepper 3 tbsp (45 ml) each sweet and hot paprika Herbed Yogurt Spread: 1 to 1½ tbsp. (15 to 22.5 ml) chopped fresh thyme mixed with minced chives or garlic chives
36
Method:
Spoon the yogurt into a very fine mesh sieve or an ordinary sieve lined with cheesecloth. Rest the sieve on a bowl and refrigerate for at least 24 to 36 hours. Check occasionally and throw out the liquid that accumulates in the bowl. When the yogurt is as thick as soft cream cheese, remove it from the sieve and place in a covered bowl.
Herbed and Spiced Yogurt Cheese Balls
Roll small amounts of the cheese into 1- to 1½-inch (2.5- to 3.8-cm) balls. This is a messy job and the balls will not be perfectly spherical. If the balls seem very wet, place them, uncovered, in the refrigerator overnight. Choosing from the list above, place each herb and spice that you like on a separate plate. Gently roll each ball in one of Spalife Romance 2012
the seasonings until it is completely coated. Present the multicoloured balls on a serving dish with thin slices of toasted baguette.
Herbed Yogurt Spread
Follow the basic recipe and mix the herbs into the yogurt cheese. Mound on baguette, country or whole wheat bread. This is also great as a spread for a vegetarian sandwich. ©This recipe is from Linda Haynes’ The ACE Bakery Cookbook. http://acebakery.com/recipe-box/recipe/38/ spa-yogurt-cheese/

Ask Mary
Editor Mary Hughes Answers Your Spa Questions Dear Mary, I wanted to write to you and tell you that my daughters took me to my first spa ever for my 60th birthday! We had a great time; they treated me to the ‘works’. I had a massage, and my nails and toes done. Then, they took me out for dinner, afterwards. I felt amazing! I can’t imagine going another 60 years without this glamorous treatment. So I have decided I am now going to be a spa addict. Do you know of any spas that offer something like a ‘treatment of the month club’ where you can pay at the beginning of the year for all the services in advance?
There are many spas that offer a year’s worth of services. I asked Lori Robertson, the Executive Director from Leading Spas of Canada to answer your question: Welcome to the ‘ahhh’ of spa, Marilyn! Many Leading Spas in our membership
Many spas will offer special package pricing for a series of manicures, pedicures, massage, body treatments, or facials, such as services offered by Clarins Skin Spa and Dove Spa.

By Dr. Kristin Caria, B.Sc. (Hons), N.D.
S
ince about one third of our lives should be spent sleeping, making sure we get a good night’s sleep is an extremely important part of our overall health. Many of us will experience transient sleep disturbances throughout our lifetime, and up to 30% of the population suffers from chronic
44
sleep disturbance or insomnia. Insomnia can be divided into ‘sleep-onset insomnia’ (difficulty falling asleep), and ‘maintenance insomnia’ (frequent awakening). When we sleep, we typically move through five sleep cycles: each cycle consists of four stages of non-REM sleep and one stage of REM sleep. As sleep progresses, our sleep becomes deeper, and Spalife Romance 2012
our brain wave activity becomes slower. While we sleep, our brain also releases growth hormone to stimulate tissue regeneration, liver regeneration/detoxification, muscle building, fat storage breakdown, blood sugar normalization, and much more. With poor sleep quality/quantity, growth hormone release is decreased, and our body is less able to repair, detoxify, and regenerwww.spalifemagazine.com
ate itself. Sleep is also the time when our body removes free radicals from the brain to minimize neuronal damage. Insomnias, therefore, result in greater free radical accumulation, leading to accelerated aging of our brain and possibly neuronal damage. This may leave you with fatigue, confusion, foggy thinking, memory impairments, and difficulty focusing and concentrating on tasks at work or school. Difficulties falling asleep may result from acute/chronic pain, poor sleep hygiene (noise, lights, TV, computers, etc.), vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and caffeine or alcohol consumption. Frequent waking in the night may result from sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, acute/chronic pain, and alcohol consumption. Our mental-emotional states can also influence our sleep greatly: anxiety states tend to make falling asleep rather difficult, while low mood or depression tends to result in frequent waking during the night. Another noteworthy cause of frequent awakening relates to our blood sugar. If we experience a steep drop in blood sugar while we are sleeping, our body will release adrenaline in order to boost blood sugar levels temporarily. This same adrenaline also causes us to wake up, often feeling quite alert. One of the most common reasons why people can experience both types of insomnias has a lot to do with our hormonal control of sleep. Our body knows when to fall asleep at night, when our cortisol levels begin to decrease. Our brain also tells our body to stay asleep by releasing increasing amounts of melatonin throughout the night. If either of these hormones are not being released in the proper amounts, at the right times, this can result in a chronic battle for a good night’s sleep. Salivary cortisol testing is a very effective specialized laboratory test for detecting imbalances in cortisol rhythm. For more severe cases of insomnia, specialized lab tests can be used to determine imbalances in melatonin and other neurotransmitter levels that are important for adequate sleep. MULTI-VITAMINS
50
by Heidi Smith B.Sc., RD, Registered Dietitian
Do you need a multi-vitamin? The vitamin and supplement market in North America is a multi-billion dollar industry. It’s sometimes hard to know what is needed for health and what is hype. I always recommend healthy food choices as the first line of defense against disease. If you are over 50, however, there is a good chance you will also benefit from supplementing a few key vitamins and minerals. In a younger population a multi-vitamin can act as a back-up during busy times when our food choices are sub-optimal. As we age however, the need for vitamin supplements
46
becomes more important. To put it simply, older adults tend to eat less food and absorb less nutrients. With age, calorie needs tend to decline and therefore to maintain the same weight you need to eat less calories. It can therefore become difficult to get the required amount of vitamins and minerals while eating less food. The first solution is to eat more nutrient dense, lower calorie foods such as dark green leafy, whole grains, lower fat dairy products and lean meats. One suggestion I make to people is to fill half of their plate Spalife Romance 2012
full of vegetables. This helps to keep the calories down and the nutrients up. Veggies and fruit provide active ingredients called “phytonutrients”. These important nutrients are better absorbed and more potent than anything you can get in pill form. Vitamin supplements can, however, ‘top you up’ and fill in the gaps of nutrients you are missing in your diet. In particular adults over 50 need to pay attention to Vitamins B12, B6, D, K and folate not to mention carefully balancing minerals such as calcium, magnesium and iron. As we age the digestive tract becomes www.spalifemagazine.com
less efficient at absorbing nutrients. Therefore, larger amounts may be necessary to meet minimum requirements.
Be careful however, ‘more’ is not always better. For example, too much vitamin A can cause liver abnormalities and increase risk of bone fractures. Too much Vitamin K can interfere with blood thinning medication which is why you won’t find it in a multivitamin and it is not sold over the counter in Canada. It’s clear that a careful balance of nutrients from food and supplements is necessary. It’s worth checking in with a Registered Dietitian to fine tune your eating habits and to get your base of health promoting nutrients from delicious, good old-fashioned food. Once you get your base eating habits set, you can then estimate what you are missing from your diet and take an educated approach to safely fill in the gaps with supplements.

Reflexologist.
Ask the Experts Spalife talks to a

s a recently registered reflexologist, Pat Arsenault may seem new to it. In fact, she says, “I’ve been a recipient for 20 years! I rely on reflexology for general maintenance of good health.” Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflex points on the feet and hands, which correspond to each organ, gland and structure in the body. Reflexology is a compression technique that involves the application of pressure to specific points on the feet or hands and encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own balance and normal functioning. “I experience deep sleeps for several days after the treatments. Once the body relaxes, it goes into what we call a parasympathetic state, ‘Relax and Repair’”, she explains. She was first introduced to reflexology by her massage therapist. “I was always in high stressed selling positions and this therapy really made me unwind, and relax. If there was an area of sensitivity, like, for
48
instance, I might have been coming down with a urinary tract infection, the body would start to work on that area to seek normal functioning and balance.” So now, Pat has embarked on a second career in her retirement, going back to school to qualify in reflexology. “I love reflexology and I wanted to introduce more people to this practice for good health,” she says. Meant as a complementary therapy, reflexology should not be considered to be an alternate to conventional medicine. Pat is enthusiastic about the benefits, and is introducing it into workplace programs. She can see its success. “It’s been an amazing journey with clients,” she says. “It’s rewarding that way!” She describes a typical session like this: The reflexologist should be a trained practitioner. Working on the client’s feet to relieve pain and stress, the treatment promotes the maintenance of good health. Lying on a reclining chair, the client will remain fully clothed for the treatment, since Spalife Romance 2012
reflexology is performed entirely on the feet and ankles. A treatment usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. It encourages relaxation and it allows the body to release stress, a proven underlying cause of diseases such as depression, cancer and heart disease. Reflexology promotes circulation and brings oxygen to cells. It improves elimination of toxins and assimilation of nutrients by cells. Many people experience increased energy levels after a session.

O
ur parents went to school to learn a trade or profession, expecting to work in that role for life. But, with the Twenty-First Century, we’ve left behind that old adage, ‘the learning years lead to the earning years’.
Careers shift in exciting ways – the Boomers were expected to have an average of eight during their working lifetimes. Retirement is flexible, nowadays, when workers leaving one career often leap to a new one. The current thirty-somethings look to rebrand their earning years, regularly, to take advantage of the job market shifts. So why not take your job frustrations to one of the many new horizons, beckoning? Private Career Colleges (PCCs) are blooming. Usually, PCCs are required to be registered by the government, and meet approved criteria. PCCs in Ontario alone, have over 600 campuses found in more than 70 communities. Many education settings offer learning part-time to be flexible to work-life balance. Plus, many offer employment support services to help you translate that investment in your education into employment success.
CDI College, A Career in Massage Therapy Not only does CDI College have a Career Services department, but they coordinate with every student, to help them find employment. This is a natural last step for a school dedicated to giving students a strong knowledge base in both science and practical skills. “A typical day for the student is divided between theory based classes and hands-on practical work,” says Glenn Van lderstine, Campus Director for CDI College in Calgary. “The focus within the Massage Therapy program is to provide the student with the knowledge, skills, ethics, and
50
behaviours needed to be successful in their career.”
Herb Foster, Campus Director for CDI in Edmonton.
Class sizes are small, to give the students practical one-on-one attention that builds their confidence for going out into their field of practice. Students can enroll in a one or two-year program. There is an introduction to therapeutic massage, then a more in-depth look at trauma rehabilitation, including sports therapy, advanced techniques, and even clinical assessment. “We hire only top registered, advanced massage therapists, who love this field and can teach,” says
Students also work in the community, as well as in the college on-site massage clinic. “Customer service is the core foundation of the college,” adds Glenn. “It’s taught when the student enters the college, right through to completion of a program.”

Spring April 1 – June 30 2012 By Kelly Surtees
http://kellysurteesastrology.wordpress.com/
Aries
April is a month of transition as your ruler Mars gets back on track. Put the past behind you and focus on new directions. Physical energy improves through May as power planet Pluto supports you in taking control. Focus on breath work with exercises like yoga, Pilates and swimming. Consider a chromium supplement to control any sugar cravings.
Taurus
Cancer
The Sun spotlights your social life and friendships through May. The Full Moon on May 5 is ideal for a detox. Focus on whole, fresh foods to boost energy. June is your retreat month as the Sun and Venus chill out in your 12th House. A spa getaway or meditation retreat then is ideal to promote relaxation and rest.
Leo
The Sun energises lucky Jupiter in your sign from April 20 – May 20. You’ll be in the spotlight then so make extra effort with your appearance. Heart health is in focus so make sure you’ve got regular cardio in your wellness routine. Finances are under review under Venus’ influence. Consider a workout buddy or upgrade your iPod to stay focused while training.
Your professional life kicks into high gear late April and remains top priority until the end of May. Jupiter and the Sun combine to help you get noticed and promote your talents. Hips, bums and thighs are in the spotlight so include lunges, walking/running and squats in your health routine. Support the liver by considering an alcohol free week or month.
Beauty planet Venus, in your sign until August, helps you overhaul beauty and wellness rituals. Indulge in exotic facials and pampering spa experiences. With kidneys in focus stay radiant by ensuring you get plenty of fresh water each day. Consider hot water with the juice of half a lemon first thing in the morning for a true inner glow.
Active Mars boosts energy and confidence from April 14, helping you finally make progress on delayed or side-tracked plans. Mercury helps you get grounded in May, when focusing on physical wellbeing is a priority. Consider outdoor hikes and adventure experiences for maximum enjoyment. You’re at your witty best between May 24 – June 8, which is also a great time to get ahead at work.

Capricorn
Libra
Life is under review through May as a retro Venus influence helps you slow down and take stock. Stepping back helps you clarify what needs changing. June brings a dynamic Uranus/ Pluto link that helps you shake up any areas of life that are stuck or boring. You’ll prefer company to going solo this season so opt for group classes.
Mid April highlights the need for better work/life balance. Your creative energy is at a high in May so create more time to be playful then. Whether you want pampering or to learn a hobby, having fun is more important than achievement. Life kicks into high gear at the end of June, stick to tried and true wellness routines until then.
Scorpio
Relationships are highlighted from April 20 – May 21 as the Sun and Jupiter join forces to boost romantic prospects. Single or attached, your love life improves as you make it a priority. Consider a couple getaway or singles event. Revisit and revise health goals - motivation returns from mid-April and you’ll find it easier to stay focussed after then. June brings new financial possibilities.
Sagittarius
Relationships are evolving as an extended Venus influence helps you explore the highs and lows of love. Being open to healthy changes helps you make necessary improvements in your closest relationships. Jupiter and the Sun help you find new balance between work and wellness routines, especially in May. Eating well is top priority this season so splurge on quality or organic food.
Aquarius
A double emphasis – from the Sun and Jupiter – on home and family this May highlights the pleasure of at home workouts and DIY beauty treatments. Splurge on natural ingredients to pamper yourself at home, and stock up on workout DVDs. Family is your priority and being there makes all the difference. Romance gets a boost in June under Venus’ influence.
Pisces
Relationship or dating delays are finally resolved one way or another mid-April. You’ll find it easier to focus on what you want through May, though home and family plans could hit a snag then. Finances improve late April making it easier to update your exercise and beauty equipment. Stay grounded this season with regular body therapies like reflexology, facials or massage.

A new look for under $125
T
here was nothing wrong with my bathroom. It was clean and functional, but it has had the same look for the last three years. I wanted to do a makeover, but I didn’t want to invest a lot of money doing it.
By Mary Hughes Staging by Angela Karges
Before
My old shower curtain was plain white and it seemed to look a little institutional to me. So, I looked for a pop of colour. I found a very interesting white and black tree curtain. A soft, rubberbacked black bath mat coordinated perfectly with it.
After
A few bath towels, one with red, gave it a punch of colour too, that brightened up the ensemble. But what was really cool - aka the pièce de résistance was a small glass shelf table that fit right beside the tub. It required assembly but it was not too big, and it complemented the space completely. The table was fully functional and offered three shelves that would hold all the odds and ends. Perfect: when having a bath, I could place my cup of tea there while reading a book or just sitting to relax. I needed it to hold towels and bath salts, and whathave-you. Now, the look is fresh and very pleasing. And the best part? Everything added up to just under $125! Items sourced – from JYSK Bed Bath stores across Canada www.jysk.ca
