Talking trash with Netta.
Antoinette du Preez
S
ince moving to Onrus at the beginning of the year, we’ve enjoyed the most amazing walks with the dogs every morning. Everyone is super friendly and we are reminded every day that we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. As I’m sure all dog walkers are always prepared for a sidewalk surprise we therefore always carry poo bags with us, biodegradable I might add. On our daily walks we found these very handy for picking up trash along the way. That got me thinking... if everyone picked up one small bag of trash a day (on their daily walks or routes) then as a community we can truly make a HUGE difference. Talk is cheap, so I thought I would show you and dig a little deeper into the world of trash and recycling. For a week I photographed everything I picked up on my walk from home to Onrus beach and back on the coastal path past Davies Rock Pool and Jan Rabie’s. Quite shocking...
It seems the world was very conscious of the ‘break’ the planet had during COVID and hard lockdown globally. One read about the clean canals of Venice and ducks walking down Las Vegas Boulevard. Something we’ve never seen or heard of and probably never will again. All of a sudden with an influx of masks and saniters, we are so set on keeping ourselves clean and germ free that we’ve completely forgotten about the world around us. Every piece of plastic or trash you find outside will most likely end up in the ocean, inside a fish or the reason a bird is tangled in something unnatural, or even worse... in our drinking water. Did you know a single piece of plastic takes anywhere between 20 and 500 years to decompose. I don’t know about you, but this upsets me very much and spoils the stunning place we call home. In this area we are fortunate enough to have a municipality that still cleans our sidewalks and regularly takes our trash away. Imagine this wasn’t the case. Imagine everyone dumped their garbage in the streets, on the beaches and 4
in our rivers. What would become of what is left of this planet? Back in Cape Town City Centre we had to pay for recycling services. In the Overberg you are spoilt for choice when it comes to recycling and it does not cost you a cent. All you have to do is place your recyclables in a clear plastic bag and put it on the curb with your garbage on trash day. You can also drop your recycling in Mimosa Street at Ingomso Lelethu Recycling Hermanus. You do not have to separate your recyclables either, it physically doesn’t get any easier. The basic rule when it comes to recycling is as follows: Anything plastic, glass, paper or tin can be recycled as long as it doesn’t have any food, grease or dirt on it. It has to be relatively clean. Please do not recycle used tissues, dirty pizza boxes, etc. Think of the people having to sort through your recycling... There are many more ways that you can make a difference
without changing too much of your daily life and routine. Here is a few #trashtips that immediately comes to mind: Pick up one thing a day Avoid single use plastics (straws, take away coffee cups and containers) Carry reusable shopping bags in your car or take them with you when shopping Dispose of your cigarette butts properly Switch from plastic to eco-friendly earbuds. Let’s be a responsible community. Let’s preserve our coastline and nature for generations to come. Let’s call each other out for littering. Be the best version of yourself and #pickitup. Help me to try and inspire and convince people to make a difference. These are small victories, but every little thing picked up, adds up. #ipickeditup #trashtag #herwinwenk #cleaneroverberg #makingadifference
Walking along the beach from Die Plaat to Sopiesklip. One interesting outing this autumn is walking along the pristine beach from Die Plaat to Sopiesklip, and even as far as the entrance to the beach where the road leads into Stanford. Sopiesklip was the halfway point along the coast for Gansbaaiers en route to Hermanus and it may have earned its name as the ideal place to rest and have something to drink, such as “‘n sopie whisky’”, before moving on. The soft beach sand must have made it a tiring and tough journey with the ox wagons. The relatively untouched coastline includes long stretches of pristine white sandy beaches, historical caves, massive sand dunes, rocky limestone crags decorated and indigenous fynbos. The Gansbaai entry point to Die Plaat lies within the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and since this is one of Gansbaai’s most isolated beaches, transport to get there is essential unless you enjoy a very long walk. Walker Bay Nature Reserve is a Cape Nature Reserve and there is an admission fee at the access gate as well as strict entry and exit times. Swimming is only advised on Die Plaat’s sheltered first beach and strong rip currents can be encountered in the open waters of the long open stretch of Die Plaat’s coastline. I hope to do this soon. An African enigma
or did it come from above (A Bicycle, a Chess set, an African River)
F
or most in the Overberg jurisdiction, Shiloh Noone, largely known as a presenter on Cape Talk Radio with a Rolling Stone (4 star award) rock history book ‘Seekers Guide to The Rhythm of Yesteryear’ under his belt is often ridiculed as a conspiracy theorist or just a little bit too way out. Shiloh is one of the many characters that supports the Beanery, alongside the likes of comedian Barry Hilton and many more. Shiloh smiles, ‘’there are no pretentions at that coffee shop, but God forbid you make a Land Rover joke, enough said’’. For the last 6 years, Shiloh has been actively involved with ‘Chess for Change’, teaching this sport in the townships and various disadvantaged schools. The launch of his recent African novel ‘A Bicycle, a Chess Set, An African River’ through boutique publisher Naledi took the bookshops by storm with ground breaking sales, even Naledi Publishers were taken aback. Then unexpected rumours of a film mentioned in various articles, but not taken seriously in the present times and hearsay seen as a book promo. A recent article about four weeks ago not only gave the date of the film inception, but also mentioned the filmmaker Warren Batchelor, partner to Cactus Tree Entertainment USA. There was also a hint to the actors involved, Jamie Bartlett, Arnold Vosloo etc., even boasting Onrus River as marked for some of the film episodes. Having known Shiloh for many years, I have learnt never to take him lightly, even when brashly commenting on some wildly impossible dream. Firstly, a poet who was personally invited to Leonard Cohen’s private birthday party at Vivaldi restaurant in Barcelona, he brought the band Strawbs to Hermanus just over a year ago to a packed out private Fernkloof home theatre that ended with encore after encore. Coupled with years supporting ‘Chess for Change’ and an internet article about how Zulu children wade across a croc infested Tugela river to attend school, gave the initial inspiration for the story. (The story is about an engineer Pat Simmons on forced retirement deciding to teach chess at a mission station across the crocodile infested Mbuluzi River run by a retired Scottish mercenary named Father Angus, and it carries all the African adventure and mystery that one would expect and a lot more). Shiloh is one part of the elusive passionate ‘Collectors Guild’ alongside other Hermanus collectors like Leo Tabone and Gawaine Zeeman who have amassed rare collectable tribal artefacts, dismissing many museums as displaying replicas, and believing they are the integral guardians of these artefacts and bringing them back from foreign countries to Mother Africa. Shiloh’s Tribal Arts museum Matshana is often displayed in social media but is largely understated. The social media launch at Exclusive Books V & A Waterfront had the majority of the self-made South African celebrities arriving in full support. Steve Segerman, who discovered Rodriguez and acted in the Grammy award-winning documentary ‘Searching For Sugarman’, says “not just a fascinating novel, but educational with stirring adventures braving a crocodile infested river on a daily basis with a bicycle to teach chess”; while Carl van Der Merwe, author of ‘Moffie’, the Showmax award-winning movie says “The new breed of Wilbur Smith, salted with shimmers of Laurens van der Post” (A Bicycle, a Chess Set, An African River available at Book Cottage Hermanus).

ermanus Animal Welfare is a non-profitable and public benefit organization and is managed by a dedicated committee consisting of 10 volunteers. HAWS has to generate it’s own income and also relies on public donations from animal lovers. We also operate two charity shops. Our objectives are to prevent cruelty to animals, to provide animal welfare and to prevent wanton and improper treatment of animals. Our kennel complex is at 4 Steenbras Street in the Hermanus industrial area and this is where all our animals are housed. Our charity shops can be found at 18 Mitchell Street in town and at the Gateway Shopping Centre. We also operate an independent clinic at 4 Steenbras Street and have our own vet, Dr Floris Kruger, who recently joined the HAWS team. Our clinic opened on the 26 April 2013. This makes it possible for us to not only treat the animals in our care but also those needy animals in the community. Once a week, we also operate an outreach programme to Hawston and Zwelihle which enables those clients with no transport to consult our vet. We focus very strongly on sterilizations and it is our mission to ensure all animals are sterilized. We have a very strict policy at HAWS whereby all animals have to be sterlized in order to qualify for treatment at our clinic. Another project we operate is “Nibbles for Needy Pets”. Many pet owners are finding it more and more difficult to feed their animals and we are therefore involved in helping them. The same sterilization rule applies here. To qualify for assistance with food, all animals have to be sterilized. To the Splash readers, we would be grateful for any food donations. 10
Our work consists mainly of responding to reports of animal abuse and looking after the starving, maltreated, abandoned and sick animals. After rehabilitating these animals, we attempt to rehome them. During our busy periods, the kennels can accommodate up to 80 dogs/puppies and the same number of cats/kittens. There are four wonderful separate cat enclosures, all with outsize areas. The dogs are separated into three areas which house large, medium/small and teenagers. Puppies are housed separately until they are old enough to be introduced to the teenagers. All our dogs have large grassy outside areas where they can run about during the day and also take a dip in small plastic pools during hot days. We have wonderful dog volunteers who walk our dogs as well as loving cat volunteers who socialise and pamper the cats in our cattery. Anyone interested in volunteering their services will be very welcome. Pamela Quinn Chairperson

What is all the fuss about Digitisation… and how does it affect us as estate agents?
W
hen my husband and I decided to start our own real estate agency in an entrepreneurial fashion in 2012 we already went ‘digital’ with REDZetc . We did not want to use the existing real estate business model as we felt that we needed some change in order to provide opportunities for entrepreneurial agents with a keen business sense to work in an environment that speaks to our clients’ needs and not necessarily those of our company alone. Our aim was to train our agents to self-promote by utilization of personal branding and providing outstanding service in order for each individual to build his/her own database of satisfied and loyal clients. We wanted to change the soul of our professional business environment into a more caring one where we do not sell property, but get people with the desire to own a home or investment property to buy from us. Looking from the outside in… by working with passion for the right reasons, demonstrating integrity, transparency and expertise at all times. The challenge was of course that we wanted our agents to work from home in order to cut costs of overheads so that we could pay them a higher commission percentage. We could then simultaneously deviate from the existing business models which had become outdated with offices in each area of operation with photo’s in the windows and agents sitting behind their desks waiting for the phone to ring! This ambitious desire obviously prompted a more digital approach and pushed us to operate in the digital space by providing them with a single virtual office which takes care of all administrative, marketing, HR and compliance issues. When COVID 19 struck, we were not particularly thrown off course because we were already operating from home and utilizing digital means for promotion of properties. Our agents at REDZetc were trained and prepared to up their game in the field of digitization and we were then forced to focus on protocols to ensure that clients (buyers and sellers) were specifically qualified in terms of many more aspects than what we would ordinarily do. We upped our game. No superfluous viewings that could endanger our agents or clients are allowed. We also needed to improve our marketing techniques to include virtual tours, WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms for quick communication. There are 5 important issues that we have identified that need to be addressed to ensure that our digitized methodologies answer to our ambitions: • Connectivity • Cyber Security like firewalls and secure service providers • Speedy client liaison to provide immediate responses • Real-time data and information for own utilization and clients’ benefit • Keeping up-to-date with technological progress and social media offerings But, most important of all… We must always keep focusing on the fact that we deal with human beings that need sincere and open communication. I am referring to our REDZetc agents as well as our clients: buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords. Technology is important but not all-consuming.
If we can be of any assistance please contact Dawie Snyman on 084 5811622 or Pam Snyman on 082 8000867 of REDZetc Real Estate, Real Experts, who will gladly assist.

Onrus
is a hidden gem by design. As a community, we enjoy to be “looked over” sometimes. But what exactly is it that makes Onrus different?
When you enter Onrus, you could be welcomed by a family of geese, whales and dolphins can be spotted just off the shore, bountiful amount of birdlife enrich our gardens and if you are lucky, you might spot a family of Cape Clawless Otters at the lagoon. Add to these outdoor wonders the wonderful and quirky restaurants and coffee shops and wonderful camp site, then it is easy to understand why Onrus is so unique, making it the quintessential South African beach holiday destination. As the Municipality, it is important to understand this and embrace this. Over the past 3 years, we have installed a new sewerage pipeline for Kidbrook and Bosplasie, to reduce the risk in the Onrus River. More than 100 septic tanks have also been inspected to make sure they conform to requirements and do not leak. Onrus beach has had 2 seasons of Blue Flag Pilot status and is now ready to be upgraded to Full status. Together with this, the ablution facilities at the beach will be upgraded. We are working hard to complete the picturesque Atlantic Drive footpath. This is a true asset to our community.

The Caravan Park will also enjoy some upgrades as well as the ablutions at Davies Pool. Our historic De Wet hall has also received some much needed upgrades. With the recent announcement of Fibre that is being rolled out to our area by the end of the year, we can be sure to attract Jean Orban even more digital nomads. Lets hope they don’t snap too many pictures for Instagram, spoilling our secret. Various artists, authors and sculptors has over the years called Onrus home. There is just something about what we offer that makes this place different: sense of community.

The History of the OVSRA by Hennie Greeff
T
hey boldly go where few has gone before! These are the men and woman serving on the board of the newly formed Special Rates Area for Onrus and Vermont. These two adjoining coastal villages did not escape the steady rise in crime. At a historic seaside handover meeting on 18th May, six gentlemen and a lady, assumed their positions as voluntary and elected members of the board of directors of the new and approved non-profit SRA organisation. Brand new shoes to fill, potentially deep waters to negotiate. The culmination of six years of hard lobbying, sweat and tears by a determined and tenacious steering committee group. They and a handful of champion residents who refused to give up their ideal for a safer and better living environment. The expertise brought to the table bodes well for OVSRA. The knowledge pool includes people with security, financial, organisational and project management skills. Most importantly perhaps the fact that they all immediately agreed to sign a pact. One that states that they will always work together in a transparent way with a common goal in mind. Communication with the residents was set as one of the primary functions of the board. The formation of OVSRA can be tracked back to as far as 2015. The two communities then formed their own neighbourhood watch. They called it OnVerwag, with the watchful owl as its emblem. It has been an uphill struggle with inadequate funding as the main obstacle. Not everybody bought into the idea at first. A small number of residents ended up financing this enhanced security umbrella under which the whole community enjoyed a safer environment. To optimise their efforts, the exco of OnVerwag then met with the Overstrand Municipality in early 2017. The installation of cameras was the main item on the agenda. At that meeting it was suggested they form a steering committee to look into the viability of a SRA. This would then ensure that the whole community would contribute to their own improved safety.
In July of that year, a needs survey was conducted in the community and a list of items were presented to the OM. The idea was not to take over any of the existing functions and duties of the municipality. The SRA would identify areas where the general public felt the OM did not quite reach and service on a regular basis. Overall safety remained the main priority but the list also now included beautifying the town. Additional cleaning of public areas, protection of green belts as well as enhancing safety on the main beach and coastal path were added to the wish list. A financial plan was drawn up and discussed with the community at public meetings. Finally, the OM approved it. They would start collecting additional rates from each property owner based on a standard rate 0.00035 in the Rand of the municipal value of the property. This meant that the average extra payment of most residents would be between R35-00 and R55-00 per month. In return safety of open public spaces would be drastically improved by mobile and foot patrols and the installation of monitoring cameras. One of the key strengths of the board of OVSRA in the opinion of the author, lies in its diversity of experience that can be brought to bear on any challenge that may arise. From the discipline of a retired navy admiral to the gentle yet firm touch of a woman well versed in business. From the financial knowhow of an accountant to the guardianship of an expert environmentalist. Already they have met with neighbouring SRAs with the view of holding hands and forging a relationship of cooperation and common goals. Whilst still looking for adequate office space from where operations can be launched and controlled, OVSRA hopes to be substantially operational by the end of the year. OVSRA is a big ship and will take a while yet to gather full momentum. With Chairman Anton Du Preez and vice chairman Bernhard Teuteberg at the helm, we trust that she will remain true to her course and bring about its promise of enhanced peace and tranquillity to our two villages.

Kalfiefees
I
Teatervriende

soos o.a.
