Perhaps because I am getting a better grip on the whole time management thing, I can organize my time to make sure that I get in as much seat time as I need. All you got is lifetime. Go." I love that quote from Rollins. INDUSTRY NEWS BMW MOTORRAD RELEASES PRICING FOR THE 2020 S 1000 RR
BMW has announced the pricing for their third generation of the S 1000 RR. The base price for the model will be $16,995 and is scheduled to hit dealer showroom floors this summer. The 2020 model will be available in two colorways: Racing Red and Light White, Racing Blue Metallic, Racing Red (available only for the M Motorsport Package). The M Motorsport is an upgrade package that adds $3,700 to the MSRP. BMW is offering optional performance packages and single upgrade options for the base model. The Select package ($1,400) includes a tire pressure monitor, next-generation dynamic damping control, heated grips, and cruise control. The Updated Race Package ($1,600) contains Ride Modes Pro, forged wheels, M Lightweight Battery, M Chassis Kit with Rear Ride Height Adjustment and Swingarm Pivot Point. NEIL GRIMMER STEPS INTO THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT OF THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON BRAND Newly appointed President of the Harley-Davidson Brand Neil Grimmer will be responsible for supporting and executing the manufacturer’s strategy to build the next generation of HD riders, globally. His tasks will include product planning, marketing, retail, apparel and communication. Grimmer’s newly created position reports directly to the CEO and President of Harley-Davidson, Matt Levatich.
UTAH MAKES LANE SPLITTING LEGAL
Utah is the second U.S. state to legalize lane filtering, after California. Utah’s House Bill 149 amends provisions of the Traffic Code, defining “lane filtering” and makes it legal for a motorcycle to overtake a vehicle that is stopped in the same lane of travel and there are two or more adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel. The
bill further notes that motorcyclists traveling at no more than 15 miles per hour can split lanes on roads where the posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour or less. The bill was presented by state Representative Walt Brooks and Senator David P. Hinkins and signed by Governor Gary Herbert. The new law will take effect on May 14, 2019. he 2019 Ducati Diavel 1260 S is a perfect storm of power, beauty, and control. Those are the elements that define motorcycle bliss. To call the 1260 S a departure from or the next step in the evolutionary process of the Diavel is an injustice. While on paper and in theory, the Diavel 1260 S is a second coming, in reality, this machine is so much more. Ducati introduced the 2019 Diavel 1260 S in beautiful Marbella, Spain. Before getting into the technicalities and specifications of the Testastretta DVT 1262 engine, I want to begin with the Diavel’s visual presence. Introduced in 2011, the Diavel took the bike world by storm for many reasons. Efforts were made to categorize or place it in a box, yet the Diavel defied the efforts and remained unique unto itself. It didn’t look like a sportbike. It didn’t look like a naked bike. It didn’t look like a cruiser. It was none of those things; however, it performed like all of those things. The Diavel was a collection of the best performance offerings that those categories provided and beyond. It was a powerhouse that provided superbike performance with the comfort and handling of a standard naked bike. The achievement was impressive. But there was more work to do. With the original Diavel as a platform on which to build, the refinement of the Diavel is likened to a professional bodybuilder that has leaned out in preparation for competition. With a $19,995 price tag for the base model and $22,995 for the S version, the Diavel 1260 is ripped with striations that elevate its domineering stance. The Diavel’s chiseled and aggressive physique embraces its sharpened lines that commanded my eyes to follow a flow that began on my initial approach and continues as I mounted the bike. Powering up the Diavel 1260 S, I was greeted by a decent sized TFT color dash data center that displays the necessary bike information. THE FIRST RIDE: DIAVEL 1260 S view options via the handlebar switches that also activate rider-friendly features that include cruise control, power modes (sport, urban, touring), and wheelie control. Almost tucked out of immediate sight on the right handlebar is the Ducati Launch Control activation button. We didn’t get to fiddle with this bit of fun, and it was not mentioned during the press briefing. The DLC was introduced on the XDiavel S model in 2016. Being familiar with that model, I knew where to look for it. The controls and data are all very similar to that of those of the XDiavel, so I was right at home as I toggled my way around the menu. Once in the saddle, I quickly found what I like to call the sweet spot. Being a larger rider, it often takes a moment to get accustomed to the ergonomics of a machine. With the 1260 S, however, the overall dimensions suited my larger frame just fine. The ample seat structure provided plenty of comfort without being cumbersome. The ergonomics of the hand and foot controls are ideal for several body types and sizes. I found the most appealing aspect of the placement of the controls was how quickly I could adjust my body position from a relaxed or neutral riding stance to an aggressive or sport attack position. The Diavel 1260 S tips the scales at 538, wet. It’s a lot of bike. However, its weight and overall mass are deceiving when it comes to how it handles. With its athletic build and broad shoulders, it is better stated that the Diavel is svelte. It’s designed to contain explosive performance that can be unfurled as necessary, at will. It’s a powerhouse blend, an example of the blissful union of power, ability, and agility. As with most press rides, there is usually a stretch of highway before we reach the technical portion of the route. I find this to be the best time to get a feel for the engine as you get to open the bike up for a bit. From the real roll on the throttle, entering onto the highway, the Diavel roared with an aggressive response. Aggressive, yes. 24 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2019

I was instantly made aware of the 157 horses and all of the other grand potentials residing inside the new Desmo 1262, L formation twin, four valve, dual spark powder keg that was currently between my legs. “Rocket” isn’t the word and “missile” still misses the mark. While the power, itself is most impressive, my thoughts were focused on the delivery of said power. The throttle response is smooth, exact, manageable. Nothing wasted nor unwanted as I worked my way through the gearbox, effortlessly thanks to the quick shift system that allows for clutchless up and downshifts. As a machine, the Diavel 1260s is confident within itself and its purpose. Confidence breeds confidence. As a rider, the less you have to worry about equals a more significant amount of focus on what is essential, which is the ride. The Diavel 1260’s stability can be attributed to the sheer, proper execution of a design concept but there are other factors at work. A 240 rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tire makes for a healthy contact patch, firmly connecting the 1260 to the asphalt. The base model is equipped with 50mm adjustable front forks and a rear monoshock whose preload and rebound can be adjusted. The S model is loaded with an Ohlins suspension set up that includes 40mm adjustable front forks and a fully adjustable rear monoshock. Rake and trail check in at 27 degrees and 30.7 inches, respectfully, allowing the Diavel 1260 to offer nimble handling with impressive feel and response. The route continued from the highway to the base of the mountain where we would begin our ascension via the twisty and technical, yet well-groomed roads of the Spanish countryside. This portion of the ride is where it all started to come together for me and the Diavel 1260’s behavior and true personality quickly emerged. It’s reserved yet aggressive manner paired with its smooth delivery of explosive power let me know that it knew what itself was capable of. The Diavel 1260 is sure of its ability without being arrogant. 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2019

Through blind technical turns and sweeping escalating corners, packing Bosch Cornering ABS technology as well as traction control and a proper Brembo brake package (4 piston monobloc, radially mounted fronts with 32mm with semi-floating rotors and 2 piston calipers in the rear), the Diavel 1260’s confidence increased my ability to focus on the task at hand. This note is important to understand because this is where the mental connection between a rider and their motorcycle is sparked. The realization of trust is the nexus of this relationship. After a lunch break, we descended the mountain and headed back to the hotel. It was just as fun coming down the mountain as it was going up. Back at the hotel, I took a moment to process an entire day of data. My first instinct was to compare the 2019 Diavel 1260 to the prior year models. But that was wrong. It’s a disservice to the mechanical engineers, designers and the Diavel 1260 itself. The 2019 Diavel 1260 is a new bike in the Ducati family and should be treated as such with all of the courtesies its deserves. It can be considered a second generation of the Diavel but the level at which It outperforms the first generation Diavel, and the difference between the two bikes is so vast that it takes away from the unique attribute of both machines. So, do not line them up next two each other, comparing notes. You’re not making the best use of your time. Instead of trying to make a point of the differences between apple and oranges, throw a leg over the Diavel 1260 and ride one. 30 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2019

MICHAEL DUNLOP IS COMING TO THE US TO RACE IN THE PIKES PEAK INTERNATIONAL HILL CLIMB Isle of Man TT legend Michael Dunlop has announced that he will compete in the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is single timed attempt 4,720-foot climb race against the clock involving 156 turns over 12 miles with a maximum elevation of 14,115 feet. Dunlop stated that he would announce further details regarding his team and competition motorcycle before the event date of June 30, 2019.

Michelin Tires is the official tire supplier for MotoGP and will serve as the official sponsor of the 2019 Aragon GP at MotorLand Aragon. Dorna announced the sponsorship with the official event title, “Gran Premio Michelin de Aragon.” The Gran Premio Michelin de Aragon takes place September 20 through the 22nd.

While an investigation is still underway as to the cause of the fire that destroyed a large amount of equipment and machines required for the inaugural season of the MotoE Championship, the series will continue with a revised schedule for the 2019 season. Comprised of six races, round one will commence July 5 at the Sachsenring in Germany. The revised schedule is as follows: Race 1 - July 5 - 7th Sachsenring, Germany Race 2 - August 9 - 11th Red Bull Ring, Austria Races 3 & 4 - September 13th -15th Misano, Italy Races 5 & 6 - November 15th -17th Valencia, Spain

This would not be the end of the waterworks as Moto2 racer Remy Gardner, who missed out on a podium by a thousandth of a second in Qatar, scored a second place finish in Argentina and again, the flood of emotions came to the surface like a dead body in New York's East River. Gardner who battled back from two broken ankles from a motocross training accident and numerous other setbacks battled eventual winner Lorenzo Baldassari tooth and nail before eventually settling for second. This podium was long overdue and judging by the paddock's reaction, welcomed with open arms. Could MotoGP cause the floodgates of emotion to overpour like the Hoover Dam or would it produce another controversial race as it has been customary the last few years? 2015: The beginning of the end of a friendship as Rossi collides with Marquez ending Marc's day. 2018: Marquez riding like a bat out of Hell bowling balled almost the entire field, including Valentino Rossi reigniting a rivalry that had reached a pleasant lukewarm temperature! What would 2019 bring to the Gran Premio Motul de la Republica Circuit? Masterclass. Pure domination. Good 'ole fashioned ass whooping... Whatever superlative you want to use, that's what Marc Marquez did to the entire field. So dominant was Marquez that riders were talking of getting a podium instead of a race win. Game recognized game and Marquez brought his A, B, C, D, E, F, and G game to Argentina. Marquez qualified on pole. The others knew it was over before they started. And once it started, it was over like the Nixon presidency! Marquez grabbed the holeshot. And yup, you guessed it... it was over! At the end of the first lap, Marquez had a full second lead on the field. At one time, Marquez stretched his lead to twelve seconds, finishing with a near ten second lead on the second place racer and it was here where the racing was! podium. Valentino Rossi, Andreas "Downforce" Dovi (nicknamed "downforce" because of a court ruling on Ducati's new aerodynamic swingarm that was protested by half the paddock for being illegal but ruled legal by the FIM in a courtroom the week of the race) Jack Miller, Maverick Vinales, Franky Morbidelli, and Alex Rins! This tussle proved quite entertaining with all involved taking turns going for it! The young guns fought valiantly this day, especially Alex Rins on the Suzuki who qualified 16th on the grid to finish an incredible fifth place! Unfortunately for Maverick Vinales he was a victim of a last lap miscue from Morbidelli causing both to crash and ended the day battered and bruised with no points. It would be the veterans, the socalled Old Men, Rossi and Dovi who ain't exactly young, in race years that is, at 33! These two broke away from the pack chasing them and rode like the veterans they were, not pushing, riding smart, knowing that on a track that is dirtier than a truck stop hooker, just an inch off line could cause a disaster! Rossi trailed Dovi going into the final lap of this 25 lap spectacle, pouncing on turn 7, going inside Dovi with a block pass, stopping the bike and motoring out of the corner. Dovi, forced to go off line, didn't offer much of a challenge after that. Fearing an off, Dovi settled into third place allowing Rossi his first podium in 11 races and putting to bed talk of the Doctor being too old! What did Argentina prove? It established in the premier class that to beat Marquez this year you better be consistent, podium when he does, if he has a good weekend, have a good weekend, etc. If he has a bad weekend, you better have a good weekend and if by chance he doesn't podium, you better podium! Point Blank, Marquez is looking as good as I've ever seen him look and that is going to be hell for the competition! Can it be done? Well, duh! Will it be done? We shall
see, but if anybody can or will, Dovi and Rossi will be the ones! They both have the experience and have been there! It's a long season and injuries, and wet races and luck will play a factor but if anything Argentina taught us, is that at the end of the day, let us not forget the passion that fuels this series!
The passion that caused an 18-year-old boy to sob in his bosses arms and a writer tear up watching it all unfold. Passion is what causes us to watch these races at sometimes ungodly hours! Argentina has taught me that passion rules this game!

his month we reached out to Texas's Own, Alex Hughes of Alex Hughes Racing from HRP Fabrication and his crew chief Randy Hughes. Anyone in the great state of Texas knows that if you're ever going to be considered fast, that you're going to have to beat Alex Hughes at some point. A fine father and son team based out of the Dallas Texas area that doesn't do a lot of talking, but love to race motorcycles. The team is always making the long trip from Texas to the east coast so this season‌ The Kings of Grudge returns the favor by adding a race in Texas for 2019. SBI: At What age Alex begin riding motorcycles and how was it that he got into motorcycle drag racing? RH: Alex began riding dirt bikes in middle School but always wanted to go faster. He always seemed to have a need for speed. At the age of 16, Alex got an F2 600 and at 17‌he went to a drag strip for the first time. He raced street Et and Pro Et at PMRA in Oklahoma for a few years then we got our hands on a 93 water pumper built by Coby Adams and went from street Et to Pro Open, no learning curve there.

SBI: Tell us about HRP Fabrication. How did the business come about? How long have you been in business and explain what it is that you guys specialize in? RH: We raced Pro Open for three years before we ever won a single round, but it was during this time that I really learned to build motors and Alex would make chassis parts as we changed the bike which we called Drama Queen. Alex's ability to make parts eventually lead to him starting HRP in 2014. He had been making chassis parts since 2007 and has grown as a machinist and a programmer and now offers complete grudge chassis builds from custom front ends to race rearsets. During this time Alex formed and ran an organization he named Southern drag bike association for seven years. SBI: October 18-19 2019, The King of Grudge series is coming out to Xtreme Raceway for the first time. I'm sure the HRP Fabrication played a significant role in helping to make that happen. What can we expect when the BIG 8 Competition rolls into town? RH: HRP had enjoyed being a KOG Big 8 sponsor and excited to work with Kings Of Grudge and XRP to bring this together. There are a lot of great bikes here in Texas that will enjoy the opportunity to compete with the Big 8 at XRP where the track is always on point. SBI: Alright, Let's talk about Knight Rider. A lot of changes to the build over the years and steadily trying to get everything figured out with the new chassis set-up. What other changes could we possibly expect to see this season and will we ever see the Knight Rider versus the infamous Black Caesar AKA Jarrett Jones grudge race. RH: We've made additional changes to the new chassis and continue to work on improving its performance and appeal. Knight Rider has never turned down an opportunity to race, and we would love to finally get to run Black Ceasar at any track, I would love for this race to take place at the Man Cup world finals and go out in them deep waters past the 1/8th. The old water pumper sits in the corner now as we enjoy our possibilities with the GS known as Knight Rider as we race in the KOG BIG 8 series. I enjoy the role of crew chief, engine builder, and system wiring harness builder. T
he first race of the 2019 season started at the legendary Daytona Speedway during Bike Week and what a time to do it! Thousands of people from all over come down to ride, party and watch the races. Besides the Daytona 200, there was the AMA Supercross race, and the best one yet, the AMA Flat Track races. I couldn’t attend all three, but I chose the one most interesting to watch, and that was the Flat Track races! I got to the pits at noon and started to take in the madness. I spent a good amount of time in Larry Pegram’s garage. The Lloyd Brothers Team was hustling and bustling to get everything perfect! It’s funny to see different riders personalities as the day goes by. Larry wasn’t sitting there relaxing. He was there putting in his input and counting down the time until he needed to go back out. He never once relaxed until after the race. I went out to the track here and there until the qualifying. Once that started, I didn’t move. Getting to watch everything up close and personal is so breathtaking. Seeing these emotions of the riders and their crew is incredible. There are two different race groups or classes: twins and singles. Of course, the main event is the twins, but they both put on quite a show! Carlile had a mechanical problem as well and had to retire from the race. For the AFT Singles, Oliver Brindley finished first, Jesse Janisch second, along with Dan Bromley in Q1. In Q2, it was Jesse Janisch first, Oliver Brindley second and Jacob Lehmann in third. During the main event, Jesse Janisch took the checkered flag, following with Dalton Gauthier and Dan Bromley. Once the races ended, it was a whole different ball game. The riders were relaxed, most of them were happy, and a lot of them were ready to eat! HOLSTERS AND POINTS OF CARRY W
e have all seen the movie or television show where the wanna-be badass pulls his gun from his waistband with no regard for the threat of chaffing. Often in these films or shows, you witness the same character firing his weapon while holding it sideways, affectionately known as the Kill Shot. In the many adventures of my life, I have been in some tight spots where I've witnessed real people in people in real life carrying their weapons carelessly in their waistbands sans holster. I am only going to say this once: Stop it.
Let me back it up here, slightly. I admit that when I first began carrying, I struggled with finding a proper holster that was both functional and comfortable. I experimented with multiple styles of holsters and points of carrying on my body. I spent a considerable amount of time and money trying out both leather and Kydex IWB holsters, OWB holsters and even a shoulder holster. There are a few types of materials that holsters can be made of: leather, Kydex, nylon, hybrid. Each material comes with their own set of pros and cons mostly on the matter of the level of comfort versus durability. Then it was a question of where do I carry: small of the back, appendix, hip or some variation thereof. Eventually, I found a combination that worked for me. However, when I began to carry while riding, the exploration process started all over again.
Not only is this practice dangerous, unpractical and nontactical, but it is also straight up idiotic. Anyone that improperly carries a firearm on their body, be it their waistband or depending on the size of the gun, in their pocket, is a prime candidate for the Darwinism Award of the Century. THE LIFE: RIDING WHILE STRAPPED riding position on both styles of motorcycles is very different. One is relaxed while the other is aggressive. Body position would need to be considered when deciding where I would carry on my body. Another factor was the accessibility to my firearm in the event of a threat. I needed to be able to draw my weapon while maintaining control of my bike. An item that most may not consider is the style of gloves that you wear. We will get into how your riding apparel comes into play in a later installment, but I thought it was worth mentioning here. Dexterity is elemental when riding and equally of importance when being able to draw your weapon from the point of carry and operating it, if the need may be. A bulky glove may offer the desired level of protection in the event of an off. That same bulkiness could present itself as a hurdle as you try to draw your sidearm and attempt to place your finger on the trigger. I am going to suggest, as always, that you check with your state and local laws on your concealed carrying and open carrying rights and not apply my experience across the general public. Knowing your rights as a gun owner and being properly educated is just as crucial as owning and operating a motorcycle. With that in mind, and after several months of trial and error, my research led me to set up that works best for my riding style as well as my riding while strapped ideals.
a bare minimal if any at all. The Kydex kept my firearm in place, and I didn't have a concern about it becoming loose at speed regardless of which style bike I was riding. This particular holster was designed in the appendix manner, at the center of your waist, in the 12 o'clock position. This point of carry is unpractical and extremely uncomfortable when riding. Sandwiching a gun between your precious cargo and a fuel tank is not my idea of a fun ride. Another option for point of carry could be the small of my back. This point doesn't feel the most secure nor accessible. Sure, you can reach and draw, but there is an easier and safer position. The inside of the jacket shoulder rig eliminates your access to your firearm unless you are off of your bike or your ride with your jacket unzipped. I opted for my point of carry to be on my hip, at what would be your three or nine 'o'clock position. This position is very comfortable and accessible whether I am riding a cruiser or sportbike.
I live in an open carry state so I could wear an OWB rig, but I choose to go with the IWB for security and comfort reasons. With my gun tucked close to me, I can ride my ride without bringing unnecessary attention to myself. Even though I can open carry, not everyone understands that right and 'I've had my share of conversations with police who were investigating the report of a large black male on a motorcycle with a gun.
