Therefore, the message is that we must continue to support one another. We are all dealing with troubling times. For the foreseeable future, it's will be what it is going to be. But right now, it is time to fortify our relationships with one another and build each other help.

INDUSTRY NEWS ANNUAL AIMEXPO SHIFTS DATES AND TARGET AUDIENCE
The American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) announced that that it is making the transition to a trade-only event, or strictly business to business, with new show dates. AIMExpo has moved from its customary early October, four-day event, to a three-day event over the January 21-23, 2021 weekend at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Event organizers state that one of the reasons for the shift is related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The other reason is that excluding the consumer market from the show has been part of their strategic planning for some time. AIMExpo's primary market has always been the dealer and retailer network. This moves offers an opportunity to concentrate on their core audience.

"Ducati Cares" has been implemented by Ducati to give access to the consumer to the dealer network via a digital, or virtual service that offers everything from sales, dealer video chat or call sessions, test ride scheduling, new bike configuration, and more. Customers can also register through MyDucati, an online portal to create, save, and share bike configurations. Soon, customers will be able to schedule dealership appointments via the portal, as well.
For the dealer network, Ducati is providing online training via a dealer specific app for its sales and after-sales forces. The weekly content will be uploaded to the app to keep the dealer network up to date on the latest processes and procedures. Training will continue via a series of webcasts and an ever-growing online archive of content and information for the service department. KTM CRANKS UP the heat on the competition in the middleweight
sport naked bike segment with this new hot rod: meet the 890 Duke R ($11,699). The R-spec Duke builds on the capability of the original 790 Duke with a punchier engine and more robust suspension and braking components. This nets a vastly more capable package, that is, if melting Michelin rubber is the name of your game. As the nomenclature insinuates, accurately this time, the 890 is powered by a larger capacity 890cc LC8c parallel twin. The engine benefits from a number of technical improvements all revolving on increased power, smoothness, and overall rideability. Yank the twist grip and the engine’s increased power is readily apparent. If you’ve ridden the 790 version, it feels like the new version is a hopped-up and kitted race bike. The motor hits hard, remanence to the 1290 Super Duke R, yet it is more manageable than the aforementioned beast. This makes the 890 Duke the tool of choice for canyon carving missions. THE FIRST RIDE: KTM 890 DUKE R Our test bike was fitted with KTM’s optional electronic quickshifter ($399.99) which enables clutchless up and downshifts. This boosts acceleration when rowing through the slickshifting six-speed gearbox. It also elevates chassis stability by allowing downshifts at lean. Much of the handling credit also goes to the improved WP suspension components and excellent Michelin Power Cup tires which provide borderline absurd levels of grip. In typical KTM fashion, the fork has independent and tool-less compression and rebound damping adjustment. Handy red wipers allow you to monitor suspension travel. Although we didn’t necessarily miss it, it would be nice if engineers added spring preload adjustment so riders can tweak ride height and suspension stroke during braking. On a side note, KTM added this feature to its 1290 Super Duke R for 2020. The gas-charged shock, on the other hand, offers full adjustment, including preload and high/ lowspeed damping circuits. It mounts directly between frame and swingarm, sans linkage. The setup works well for spirited rides, but ride quality and comfort over bumpy surfaces are compromised. Though because of the 890 R’s extreme sport handling prowess, we’re perfectly content giving up comfort for more balls-out fun at speed. Electronics-wise, the 890 Duke R can benefit from the same robust Motorcycle Traction Control package as the 1290 Super Duke R. For a $339.99 upcharge riders can access the “Track Pack” kit which unlocks a track-specific riding mode and nine-level traction control slip control. Level 4 proved the sweet spot with its reigning acceleration just enough to afford a comfortable level of control. A higher setting restricted acceleration more than we’d like and a lower number permitted the tire to spool up more than we felt comfortable with at an elevated street pace. 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2020

This lies the beauty of the electronics – you can tailor it to your preference or riding style. Cruise control can be added for another $249.99 and $139.99 adds Motor Slip Regulator, which is KTM terminology for engine brake control. This complements the function of the mechanical slipper clutch which helps to reduce rear-wheel instability during deceleration. Speaking of which, the function of the slipper clutch was one of the only weak links we had with the 890. Specifically, it requires the rider to feather the clutch lever, as opposed to letting it out completely during slides. An auto brightening color TFT display keeps tabs on settings and has a neat “dark mode” (white fonts over a black background for night riding). A super bright LED headlamp does a marvelous job of illuminating dark stretches of roadway. Ergonomically, the 890 offers a more focused riding position. We’re especially fond of its wide handlebar and generous ergonomic proportions. Taller riders will be especially pleased with their ability to attack corners comfortably. Although the seat appears thinly padded, it proved reasonably comfortable for a sport-oriented motorcycle. Larger diameter front brake rotors are pinched by a pair of jewelry-like Stylema radial-mount calipers from Brembo. The setup is powered through Brembo’s MCS adjustable-ratio radialmaster cylinder so riders can tweak the feel of the front brakes for more or less response based on lever position. Cornering ABS, with the ability to manually disable rear ABS is yet another feature for riders that like to leave skids. Simply put, the 890 Duke R is the middleweight sport entry that KTM should have sold from the getgo. With a riding dynamic reminiscent of 2020 Super Duke R, but in a more manageable everyday riding package, the R-spec 890 is heir to the middleweight throne and a capable sport naked that will make you think twice about riding KTM. MORE MOTOGP CANCELATIONS: HJC HELMETS MOTORRAD GRAND PRIX DEUTSCHLAND, MOTUL TT ASSEN AND GRAND PRIX OF FINLAND CANCELED
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, three more rounds of the 2020 season have been canceled. The HJC Helmets Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, the Motul TT Assen and the Grand Prix of Finland will not take place in 2020.
The Motul TT Assen at the TT Circuit Assen, also known as "The Cathedral" was set for June 26 to 28. The new kid on the block was the Grand Prix of Finland at the new KymiRing was to make its debut July 10 to 12.
While two of the rounds are familiar to MotoGP fans, the third was going to make its debut as a GP circuit. The HJC Helmets Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland was scheduled for June 19 to 21.
The cancellation of these rounds, subsequentially, also means that FIM Enel MotoE World Cup, Northern Talent Cup and the FIM Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup will not take place

XDA CANCELS THE MTC ENGINEERING SUMMER NATIONALS The MTC Engineering Summer Nationals that was slated for May 15-17 at Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP). However, Virginia currently has a state-issued "stay at home" order that won't be lifted any time soon. So, to comply, both the Xtreme Dragbike Association (XDA) and VMP decided to cancel the race event weekend. This is the second race event of the season that has been canceled due to state restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this one XDA event has been canceled, the XDA still has four-race event weekends remaining for the 2020 season: June 1921, July 24-26, Sept 18-20 at Maryland International Raceway, and August 21-23 at Virginia Motorsports Park.

I GUESS IT is fitting that as I pen this piece “The Last Goodbye”, I’m watching an excellent docuseries about arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled, the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s and more specifically their last year together. How did they know it was their last year together? Because management told them so! No guessing, no wondering, the general manager told Coach Phil Jackson, “Even if you go 82-0... You ain’t coming back!” It sounds cold, but at least they knew, the fans knew and therefore it made that year more special, and gave a sense of purpose to go see this team that year as there would not be another time. Kind of like being in your 60s and Haley’s Comet is showing up that year. That Comet comes around once every 50 years, so you make plans and that is priority numero uno because you know, you ain’t gonna catch it again! Unless you pull a Gulliver or find the Fountain of Youth! How I wish this was the case in MotoGP. Valentino Rossi, the nine-time World Champion and one of the greatest motorcycle racers the world has ever witnessed entered his 24th season as always full of hope and excitement, as did all the other riders. The 2020 season was going to be the greatest ever! I know, I’ve said that time and time again but I seriously, seriously thought so, unlike last year or the year before that or the year before that. Why?
He was happy, fast, and more consistent than Quartararo. Then came Rossi. He wasn’t exactly killing it in testing but The Doctor seemed somewhat pleased. All that didn’t matter to his adoring fans. They knew The Doc had seen his better days. I had him maybe, maybe winning "a race” and that would’ve been a Herculean task at best. The 2020 field was loaded with killers! Similar to the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls team, but what role would Rossi play? His last race victory being in 2017. It was Marquez who was 'dat dude! Rossi was almost an afterthought, but to MotoGP fans the world over, we didn’t care, we just wanted that #46 to come roaring out of the garage, adjust his wedgie on pit lane and zoom onto the racetrack and hope it was his day! The fans sensed it was his closing in on his last year. Nothing was official but you knew. Kinda like when your dog is in their last days, you just know. Fans would be gobbling up tickets like a fat man would pizza at a buffet. Everybody wanted one last glimpse of The Doc. He was the 97 and 98 Bulls on two wheels. He was Michael Jordan in a helmet but in a much cooler sport! Shhh... Don’t tell MJ I said that. We were all ready for the start of the best season ever, until... COVID-19!

But this is only in theory because as of the writing of this article, the talk is of maybe, maybe starting the season in August and with the unknown of this virus, the plan is to race in possible empty circuits with the bare minimum of people. No press officers or PR for the teams.Just the rider and mechanics. A skeleton crew for the remainder of the season, in part so this ugly virus doesn’t pop up again.
I feel, even The Doctor knows this. Although his words ring true, his eyes are just a tad duller, than they used to be. The dull of a man that has a life outside of racing waiting.
I pray that this season is salvageable, for selfish reasons obviously. But also it means the world is healing. Humanity is being given a rebirth and normalcy is restored. But it also saddens me that many will be deprived of seeing The Doctor race in person one last time. Again, I don’t know for certain that Valentino will retire but, at 41, not having won a race in almost three years and a buttload of talent waiting in the wings, the writing is on the wall, not engraved in stone but maybe in spray paint. Rossi is a special rider, one of the greatest to ever do it! With that comes pride, a lot of pride. Sometimes that pride is a hindrance and leads to staying around too long. Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan, Brett Fahrve... All great, but maybe hung on a season too long. I feel Rossi is at that point. He’s happy in his personal life, having found the woman who he wants to have babies with. It was this statement that made me say “This is it!" He’s a millionaire multiple times over. He’s in love. And he’s accomplished everything a rider can accomplish. So why risk your life on a Sunday chasing the two-wheeled grandkids? It’s simple. He still has the passion! And that is

This is Valentino Rossi we’re talking about! A champion's champion! However, age plays no favorites. It comes for us all. We may win a few rounds but in the end, it wins. Sometimes, the ending is not to our liking but so goes life! Will we get to say goodbye to Rossi the way we want? With fans screaming his name, many tearing up, as I’m sure I will, waving as he passes by, knowing that this is it? Or will it be at a circuit devoid of fans and emotion, in a sterile environment? Know one knows what will happen to the MotoGP Season. We are not soothsayers. We are ordinary human beings, who only want to say one last goodbye to a Champion that has given us so many joyous moments on a racetrack. I pray we get that chance as I’m sure you do as well. UNDER ORDERs TO STAY AT HOME THERE ARE AT least 316 million people in at least 42 states with a stay home order. This means no social outings, no hangouts, no eating out, and most unfortunate… no sports and no riding. April was the month every gear head looked forward to, the American round of MotoGP in Austin, TX. The minute the races ended last year, I was already counting down the days until April 3rd, 2020. Unfortunately with everything going on, they had to postpone the race weekend, along with every single race so far that was scheduled and more to come. The only “race” they had so far was a virtual race, which fits considering what’s going on, but it’s nothing close to the real thing. It’s not just the race, but having all your friends come together in one place for one weekend, sharing a passion like no other. I know there is much more going on in the world than sporting events being canceled, but motorcycles are my world and well… I’m not here APRIL 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 47

to write about what everyone sees on the news. When this all began to get worse, I decided to drive up to North Carolina to stay with my father. I figured if I have to be stuck somewhere, it’s better to be stuck up here where there isn’t such a huge population of people and can spend time with my father. Unfortunately, I could not bring my motorbike up since I do not have a car that can pull a trailer or tie it down and put it in the bed of the truck. I’ve thought many times of how I could get my bike up here, but then realized technically I’m not even supposed to be riding my motorbike. There’s a stay at home order and it’s probably not the smartest to be riding around with a Florida license plate as certain towns here don’t allow anyone in that doesn’t live in that specific area to prevent 48 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2020
the spread. As the numbers are not high in this county, people are still being very cautious. Instead, I’ve picked up a new hobby, mountain biking. As close to a motorbike as I can get at the moment. For those who are about to roll their eyes because I am not “staying home,” I go to areas where there aren’t many people, as I could technically do with a motorbike, however, it’s a good workout to keep fit, keep my distance from people and stay off the road. I’m sure you, as I am, am very excited for the world to go back to normal. It may take time, but I’m dreaming of the days I can go riding with friends and attend sporting events. Stay safe. I made the trip more than once, but my favorite one was with my girlfriend. Somewhere near the Hearst Castle, a bee flew inside her jacket. She very calmly asked me to pull over, controlling her fear to prevent me from making an abrupt reaction that could have endangered us. The rest of the trip was a delight and being able to see the motofamily and watch WSBK in Laguna Seca was a dream destination.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: CRASHING OVER THE PAST several years, we have written dozens of articles about how to ride both faster and safer. Most of the same techniques that top racers use to win championships are directly applicable to both track day and street riders who want to ride safer. However, despite our best efforts sometimes we still fall down. This article will cover some of the best practices we have found to help minimize injury in the event of a crash. The track is a beautiful combination of exhilaration and risk that becomes a lifelong passion for most who try it. When riding the track, we have the benefits of being in the safest environment possible. Without the presence of cars, mailboxes, telephone poles, and other unfavorable obstacles we can learn new skills and enjoy the potential of our motorcycles in a fantastic environment. Quality facilities have runoff, air fence, and corner workers who warn you of unexpected dangers. Track riders also wear full leather suits and track level riding gear. The end result is that in the event of a fall, riders are far less likely to be injured than if they fall on the street.

The natural (and correct) reaction of these riders is to get off the track as soon as possible. However, this is a scenario where premeditated decision-making can save your life. The first thing you need to do is to quickly assess the situation and locate the closest edge of the racetrack. Once you have done this, stay as low as possible and crawl off the side of the track as fast as you can. Never get up and run! It is critically important to remain below the axle height of the motorcycle while crawling. If a motorcycle runs over the top of you (which is what happens when you are below axle height), your chances of surviving with minor injuries is greatly increased. However, if you stand up (or even sit up) a motorcycle can then run through you, which will most likely cause serious injury. The chances of a favorable outcome is significantly increased when you stay low, and below the axle height. In the event of an incident that involves any type of speed, there are a few suggestions that can help reduce the likelihood of injury. The first is to do all that you can to avoid tumbling. As such, I always try to spread out to give myself the widest base possible to reduce the chances of starting this process. If you slide for a long time, the greatest danger is that the friction will generate too much heat. Shifting slightly from one side to the other can help reduce the likelihood of a friction burn. In this case, having a top-quality glove (I have had fantastic luck with Held) to use for stability while sliding is a big help.
The inherent existence of danger is part of what makes any sports exciting. It doesn’t matter if you are standing at home plate in the face of a 95mph fastball, staring down a 250-pound linebacker on the other side of the field, or carving a sportbike around a 90 mph sweeper. Danger is what creates both the thrill and the important requirement for each of us to assess our comfort level with the edge of traction. As we each develop our riding skills, whether on the track or on the street, we are bound to make a mistake sooner or later that results in a crash.
