THE FANBOY AS A RIDER When I was a kid, there were only a handful of things that held my attention. Topping the list were comic books and motorcycles. Through my adolescence, I collected comic books, and as soon as I was able to, I bought my first motorcycle. My passion for the two has never faded nor wained. In fact, my passion has increased tremendously. Along with every other fanboy or fangirl, I was beyond stoked when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was announced and even more so when the films were released. I was so grateful that they were actually good! Of course, shortly after that, a bevy of custom motorcycles with Marvel character themes began appearing in magazines, at local bike nights and all over the internet. One of the many things that I love about the custom bike scene is how the motorcycle is viewed as a canvas, a blank slate. 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2019
The bike painter quickly became the new hero of the scene. For a while, at least. Trends come and go, and the custom bike painter is not as popular as he or she once was. But they are still out there, as unsung heroes still creating rolling pieces of art and leaving their hand on motorcycle masterpieces. When I see a wonderfully and properly executed painted comic book theme on a bike, it reminds me of how much that little boy is still in me and very much a part of who I am today, a rider and a fanboy. INDUSTRY NEWS THE LIMITED EDITION TRIUMPH DAYTONA MOTO2 765
The British manufacturer has unveiled the first officially licensed Moto2 Dorna Sports motorcycle. The details of the new Daytona Moto2 765 were finally released. The production run is limited to a total of 1,530 units (765 for the U.S. and Canada, 765 for Europe, Asia and the rest of the world). Each bike's production number is laser etched into the top clamp of the triple trees. The Moto2 765 is powered by a 765cc triplecylinder engine, with claims of 128 horses and 58-foot pounds of torque, improving upon previous models. The new 765 is equipped with Brembo Stylema 4 piston radial monobloc calipers and dual 310mm floating rotors as well as a single-piston caliper with a 220mm single disc at the rear. suspension set up. In the front: 43mm adjustable upside down NIX30 forks, while the rear set up is composed of an Ohlins TTX36 twin tube adjustable mono-shock with piggyback reservoir. The Moto2 765's premium lightweight chassis is straight from Triumph's Moto2 development program. Dressed in full carbon fiber bodywork, the Moto2 765 sports a unique Union Jack livery and official Moto2 branding. A single-seater, the Pirelli TD Supercora equipped bike features dynamic handling capabilities, suitable for both the track and the street. The rider experience is enhanced by a full-color TFT screen, five ride modes and an up-and-down shift assist quick shifter.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS 2020 YAMAHA YZF R1M 6 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Yamaha has released the next generation of their YZF-R1M. The 2020 model is packed with features, new design, and a whole lot of carbon fiber. Here are a few things that you need to know about the Yamaha 2020 YZF-R1M. 1. ENGINE The 2020 YZF-R1M is powered by a 998cc inline four-cylinder engine with a cross-plane crankshaft. The engine is highlighted by titanium fraction split connecting rods and offset cylinders and Yamaha's chip controlled intake. Improvements have also been made to the 2020 model's air filter and intake, injectors, throttle bodies and exhaust that now sounds more like its big brother, the YZR-M1. 2. ELECTRONICS Yamaha has done away with throttle cables and the need for them with the addition of their allnew Accelerator Position Sensor with Grip (APSCG). The APSCG works in harmony with Yamaha's Chip Controlled Throttle. The result is direct throttle response. When you roll on the throttle, the feedback is immediate. 3. CHASSIS The weightlessness of the 2020 R1M is attributed to it's aluminum and magnesium components. The delta box frame and fuel tank are both aluminum while the subframe and wheels are composed of magnesium. For good measure, Yamaha dressed the 2020 model in carbon fiber bodywork for looks and its weight-saving features. 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2019
4. SUSPENSION The suspension of the 2020 R1M is highlighted by Ohlins Electronic racing setup. On the front end, the NPX forks now feature a pressurized gas chamber. The result is improved handling and overall control over previous model years.
5. COMMUNICATION CONTROL UNIT Yamaha's new Communication Control Unit or CCU allows for seamless wifi connectivity between the 2020 YZF-R1M and your smartphone. Through the CCU, a GPS receiver will enable riders to acquire and record data. In essence, the CCU is a data logger that offers adjustability via the Y-TRAC mobile application on your smart device.
6. DESIGN The 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M's new body design was engineered to improve aerodynamics by 5.3%, decreasing wind noise and minimizing pressure on the rider while in an attack riding and full tuck position. The 2020 Yamaha YZF R1M will be available in limited quantities with an MSRP of $26,099.00.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS PIAGGIO ANNOUNCES RECALLS FOR SEVERAL MODELS Certain Moto Guzzi and Aprilia models are experiencing front brake drag that may cause the motorcycle to slow down or stop while in motion, creating a severe hazard and increasing risk of a crash. The issue is rooted at the front brake master cylinder. Models affected include 2016-2018 Moto Guzzi Audace 1400 and Eldorado 1400, 2017-2018 Moto Guzzi California 1400, 2017 Moto Guzzi MGX 21 Bagger, 2013-2014 Aprilia Mana 850, 2014-2016 Aprilia Dorsoduro 750, 2018-2019 Aprilia Dorsoduro 900, and 2018 Aprilia Shiver 900. Piaggio is notifying owners and instructing dealerships to inspect and replace, if necessary, the front brake master cylinder at no charge.

isn't rare to come across a custom bike with a paint scheme inspired by an article of popular culture. There is a lot of popular culture and even subculture in today's world. You can take your pick from any corner of what's popular in today's stage, screen, web, or broadcast platforms. However, every once in a while, something stands out and makes you pay attention. It's the proper combination of subject matter, canvas, and execution. Antonio Robinson's 2003 Suzuki Hayabusa is an example of such an excellent combination. Dressed in a remarkable tribute to Marvel's Black Panther film, the bike becomes a rolling homage to what is considered to be one of the greatest superhero comic book movies of all time. From every angle, the bike showcases a character from the movie, captured in a vital scene as if they are movie stills. The artistic depiction of T'Challa, Killmonger, Shuri, M'Baku, Klaw, and others, is spot on target. Most notable is the placement of the characters. front cowl and windscreen. As impressive and captivating as the artwork is, the overall presentation does not end there. Inspecting the swingarm, wheels, and frame, I find the detailed engraving unexpected but much welcomed. It's a pleasant surprise on the eyes, offering a contrast that states that the bike's design did not stop at the paint job. Details in the rearsets, grips, mirrors, and levers continue the concept, carrying the visual display throughout the presentation. To bring things full circle, the installation of the multi-colored light kit elevates the build several notches north. Antonio, who completed the build with the components from several partners, makes no qualms about his ride's point of inspiration. "My inspiration behind the bike was my love for Marvel. My idea to create the Black Panther bike came to me before the movie came out! I wanted to be different and knew the story of this superhero would be phenomenal. I challenged myself to create a one of a kind representation of King T'Challa, Shuri, and the advanced technology the Kingdom of Wakanda produced."

THE 2020 MOTOGP PROVISIONAL CALENDAR MotoGP has released their provisional schedule for the 2020 season. The calendar is composed of 20 race events, pending the FIM Homologation of the Finland GP which is scheduled for July. Another change would be the rescheduling of the PTT Thailand Grand Prix from round 14 to round 2, on the back end of March at Chang International Circuit. Also announced are the dates for preseason testing. Valencia and Jerez will occur in November, following the close of the 2019 season. The Sepang and Qatar tests are scheduled for February, just before the opening round of the 2020 season in March.

SCOTT REDDING CONFIRMED TO REPLACE ALVARO BAUTISTA FOR THE 2020 ARUBA.IT RACING DUCATI TEAM The Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team has confirmed that British rider Scott Redding will join Chaz Davies to complete the team line up for the 2020 season. Redding will replace Alvaro Bautista and compete on the Panigale V4 R for the 2020 World Superbike Championship. The 26-year-old Redding is currently competing in the British Superbike Championship, piloting the Be Wiser Racing Ducati Panigale V4 R, where he has earned five pole positions, six race wins and is sitting in second place in overall standings. Redding previously competed in MotoGP, before transitioning to the BSB series.
EUGENE LAVERTY ON TRACK WITH BMW FOR 2020 WORLDSBK SEASON Eugene Laverty joins forces with the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK team for 2020. Laverty will complete the 2019 season with his current GoEleven Team on the Ducati Panigale V4 R. He is the first rider announced for the 2020 BMW team lineup. Currently, the BMW Motorrad team is composed of 2013 WorldSBK Champion Tom Sykes and Markus Reiterberger. “I’m delighted to welcome Eugene Laverty into the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team for 2020, and also to welcome him back to the SMR team. We strongly believe that he can be a strong challenger for the podium. We are hopeful that as soon as he hits the track at preseason testing in November, the bike will be on another level. THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS KTM COMMITS TO A FIVE YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH DORNA KTM and Dorna announced that an extension of the current contract had been accepted, seeing that the Austrian manufacturer will compete in Grand Prix motorcycle racing for at least the next seven years. Beginning in 2020 KTM will focus their efforts in Moto3 and the premier class, and not Moto2. The announcement from KTM comes with the news that KTM and Johann Zarco will end their partnership at the end of the 2019 season. Zarco joined the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team at the end of the 2018 season. The two time Moto2 Champion made the following statement via

Quartararo whose bike was shaking like Elvis Presley during the early years. It was apparent from the onset, Marquez didn't have the pace, but in typical Marquez fashion he managed to place second to a newly rejuvenated Maverick Vinales and extend his points lead over Andrea Dovizioso, who, as Cal Crutchlow said, "is basically done!" When he could've gained ground on Marquez, he didn't, and his displeasure with the Ducati is apparent when he's giving press briefings. It reminds you of Mike Tyson's opponents (preBuster Douglas), they were beaten before the fight started. That's what Dovizioso seems like, a beaten man. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm telling you Moto3 is worth setting your alarm for. Trust me. MOTO2: Alex Marquez showed why he's the talk
of MotoGP rumors by securing his 4th win of the best thing about this race was the battle for fourth season dominantly and taking over the World through eighth and seeing Cal Crutchlow and Maverick Vinales podium in back to back weeks. Championship lead over Tom Luthi. MOTOGP: After FP4, it was apparent Marc Marquez was in another galaxy! He grabbed the pole, and the only hiccup he had during the race was at the start. He wheelied off the line, barely took the holeshot and that was pretty much all the drama that race had. Marquez could've stopped for a bathroom break and still won. That's how dominant Marquez was on this afternoon, just like he has been for a full decade! Ten years of being victorious at one circuit is mind-boggling. Marquez is essentially a one-man New England Patriots of Germany. The
The riders now head into holiday, some in great shape, ala Marquez. Some just need a break to figure it out, ala the rest of the MotoGP field. As much as I'm an optimist, this championship is over. Can you see seven-time world Champion "throwing it down the road?" Is anything possible? Of course, Jay-Z married Beyonce! But, let's be honest and real. Although I will say this, Marquez always seems to take a while to close out a championship. And there's always training injuries, and he does have a girlfriend now, which can play more havoc and chaos than people realize if things aren't going

Marquez seems a tad above the rest. Watch for the emergence of Augusto Fernandez, and although he's a little too far back to win the championship, Brad Binder is turning lemons into lemonade with that orange lemon of a KTM he's piloting. He will be fun to watch.

He's young with nothing to lose. Fabio Q. is the People's Champ at this moment and he just might get his first victory this season. The Rossi Situation. To say Rossi is struggling is an understatement. What is puzzling is the reason. It's not really clear cut, and he's got a look of a man that is near the end. I think everyone is hoping Rossi can pull off minor miracles and get another podium, possibly a win. I know I do. Although MotoGP is at a great point, the new "Kids on the Block" have "the right stuff!" Marquez is 26 and at one race, the oldest man on the podium. Vinales and Fabio have plenty more, and the VR46 Academy riders are more than ready to take over, But having Rossi racing every weekend is like ketchup. Sure, you can eat fries without ketchup, a burger, even eggs. I've seen it done before, but ketchup makes everything taste better. Nine Time World Champion Valentino Rossi is MotoGP's ketchup! He just makes it all better!

by a pack of motorcycle wolves, where drag racing runs deep into the bloodline, and the talent level is unteachable to the average rider. Most people won't understand the amount of hard work and dedication that gets put into winning. You can't go out there and just halfway do it. It's a mindset. You have to be in it at 110 percent in order for anyone to put you on a fast machine. Your dedication and your drive have to be so much greater than that of your competition. When they line up next to you, you have to know that they are coming for you because you are at the top of the food chain. You are their motivation because beating you would mean bragging rights that a lot of racers will never get the chance to experience. When you know that everyone is gunning for you and giving you their best, week in and week out, it won't matter to you because you've already looked in the mirror and conducted a self-assessment and determined that you are your only competition. This month, we feature Caleb Holt, a young man of very few words. So, I knew that writing this would be extremely tough. His focus is unbelievable, and his discipline while racing is unimaginable. We decided who better to reach out to than the people that know him the best. We reached out to the ones that are around him daily to get a true feel for what it's like to be Mr. IAM.
MARISSA HOLT (LITTLE SISTER)
SBI: Tell me what it was like growing up in a motorcycle family and being the little sister? MH: Family is great, but a racing family is everything. A basic person would never understand. We win together. We lose together. And either way, we are in it together. It isn't easy being the little sister. But to live it is to love it and I wouldn't trade my boys for anything in this world. I have some of the baddest legends in the U.S., and some in the making, in my family. Being a part of this family is more than a blessing. The track became a home away from home. It just isn't a sport. It's a way of life for us. From the outside looking in, Caleb and I are just a brother and sister that were raised up on racing. But in reality, it's deeper than any ocean. We grew up going to the Dunn Benson (Gallot) every Thursday and Fayetteville every Friday with our father. I would have to ask for both of us to go because I've always been a daddy's girl. So if he was told "no," I was told "yes." I think he was just too shy to ask. Scaredy-cat. Every day after we got off the bus, we would go straight home to do our homework. We were always told to work first. Caleb made sure we rode together. I don't believe it was a day we rode without each other. Even if he had to come back and help me do my homework, we were a team! When it rained, we laid in my grandma's hallway with toy motorcycles and drag raced until our little hands couldn't hold up anymore. Years ago, he made sure that he taught me what a 60 foot was, where the 330 was, in relation to the track. If I could do it all again, I would. I remember the first time we wrecked, and we didn't know how to explain it to daddy. Lord! We were racing and doing tricks on a little Honda 50, and Caleb burnt my leg. I don't know if my daddy was madder that we were doing tricks or the fact that I burnt my leg doing them! AUGUST 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 67
THE STRAIGHT LINE: ASPHALT & OPPORTUNITY Years later, I want to say Caleb's senior year, we were on a 450, and I would sit on the handlebars, and we would do wheelies. We got caught this time, and it was the one time we didn't have helmets on! He always knew that I'd try anything with him. We were like stunt buddies, and after every fall I've ever had he would always say, "Get up. You'll be aiiight." With every fall that I've had, I've always looked to him, and I knew he would say, "Get up. You'll be aiiight!" Even the times when he wrecked, I've called, or I've been there, and I would say, "You'll be aiiight!" We have a bond like no other, and he knows his little sister is fire and gas mixing when it comes to him! Growing up, it was always, "Y'all are Curtis McDougald's kids!" People always just knew us that way. Now that I'm older, it's "You're Lil Caleb," or "You're Caleb's sister!" I smile ear to ear because Caleb "IAM" is the most humble, and he has made a name for himself. There are plenty of little sisters that say they have the best big brother, but can't say their big brother came

from nothing and paved his own way through this race world. A small brick house riding a two-stroke to a ZX10. Dre and my dad were the first to believe in him and made way for him starting at 16! Not many others can say their big brother is more than just their brother. He is my backbone. My go-to and he knows if nobody doesn't have his back that I believe in him. His little sister always will. I have seen him go from nothing to something and I couldn't be more conceited about my big brother! He used to walk around the house and quote T.I. lyrics, "You ain't got to be a dope boy to have money!" And look at him, 27 years old with a name that rings bells and a business of his own. It's always team IAM and always will be until I'm six feet under. I will always rep the tattoo in my shoulder that reads, "Lil Caleb." AUGUST 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 69

I'M
sure we've all been to a MotoGP race or a WSBK race, but have you ever been to a stand-alone MotoAmerica race? Meaning not at Laguna where WSBK was the main event. Well I did for my first time, and well, it was a different experience, but I had a great time! I happened to be in northern California, so I figured why not go check it out. I am a huge MotoGP fan, and well, MotoAmerica isn't quite comparable. However, it's racing, and I do love racing. As I arrived, Jeff from Arai was so kind to have passes ready for my family and I. My aunt and uncle do not know much about racing, however, they think the sport is interesting, so I had them tag along. As we arrived, it was quite different than any race I've been to. Quite small, more people than I expected, but the sound of the bikes racing on the track will always put a smile on my face. We walked around and checked some stuff out. THE LIFE: THE INSIDE LINE was an area for children where they can ride small electric bikes, play carnival games, which made even us adults excited, along with prizes and gifts. Of course, we had to check it out, so we played some games, games of which I have not played since I was around 10, so it was quite exciting to me. When you play the games, everyone is a winner, so there were different prizes, such as MotoAmerica water bottles, license plate

frames, etc. Honestly a great marketing decision because who doesn't love free things?! After some games, we moved onto the rock climbing wall, where, well, I found out I am not so skilled in that department. However, I didn't want to scuff my white sneakers, so that is my reasoning. After that, we went to watch some racing. Coming from a girl who continually travels around the
world for MotoGP races, I can't tell you that this series is comparable and that you should go, however seeing it from someone else's perspective that has only been to a WSBK race at Laguna Seca is a different story. My uncle really enjoyed the races. He watched everyone, including the junior cup. He was quite impressed with the racing, how close they get to the wall going into turn 1, and how much of a gap there can be between riders. In the Superbike class, Josh Herrin finished third, which I'm sure isn't anyone's preferred side of the podium to stand on, however, seeing him place third was still nice and I'm sure fans would agree. Garrett Gerloff finished second, along
with Cameron Beaubier in first. In the Supersport class, it was PJ Jacobsen, Bobby Fong and Bryce Prince finishing third. There are three more classes. However, I will let you look that up yourself! We went down to the podium after most of the races and one thing I have never seen, which makes sense since we were in wine country, is that instead of champagne, they get glasses of wine. Well, besides the youngsters! Fans surrounded the podiums and just seeing people come out and enjoy the races was heartwarming to me. I would love to attend another MotoAmerica race. THE LIFE: THE LION'S DEN A great deal of the appeal of riding motorcycles is the places you can visit and the way you can visit them. The view from atop a motorcycle and from under the helmet is amazing and is quite different than what you will experience by any other means. That view's "amazingness" can be amplified exponentially when you get out of the area, state, region or even country you regularly live, work and ride in. I've only been to a handful of places up and down the East Coast and to a handful of places further west on twos by comparison to many of, if not most of my SportBikes Inc Magazine counterparts. However, those journeys on two wheels outside of the local PA/NJ/DE/MD quad-state area have been as rewarding to me as a visit across an ocean has been to someone else. It's always fun for me to see how other motorcyclists in different places do things, interface with one another, how they carry themselves, obviously how they ride, what gear and mods are popular and most noticeably what they do that is not done at all where I ride. Recently I visited Texas for the third time, Austin to be specific. Aside from the heavy traffic and significant and surprising, as compared to Philadelphia, homeless population, I really enjoy and like Austin. Any Northeast motorcyclists will tell you that year-round riding weather always leaves us jealous of our fellow two-wheeled warriors on the West Coast. There's never been any shame in that for me, and Texas has great weather. I will take higher temperatures over higher humidity any day on the calendar. I can deal with an occasional drought and my lawn not being as bright and vibrant from time to time if it means not sweating as soon as I walk outside in July or being uncomfortable in my riding gear when on two. This town and the neighboring towns and cities are booming with motorcycles and motorcyclists, motorcycle dealerships and exotic car dealerships, great spaces to meet and even greater places to eat. There aren't too many types of people this town wouldn't appeal to unless you just don't like people or fun or simply want to live an off the grid "just wanna be left alone" or isolated lifestyle. Over here I've noticed that cafe racers are very prolific as well as many other naked bikes. The euros are heavy in these streets as well. As a "Trumpet" rider it warmed my heart to see not only a lot of Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, and MV Agusta motorcycles but also 88 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | AUGUST 2019
dealerships dedicated to these motorcycles. I ev e n s a w a Z e r o M o t o rcycl es dealership that sort of snuck up on me. I couldn't hear it as I drove past. That was a little e-bike humor... Because Zero M o t o rcycl es are so quiet... When they ride by you can't really ... Never mind. I wish I had gotten the opportunity to attend an MC event or a bike night while there, which wou ld have no doubt been o ne hel l uva experience. Over here, there's a sort of newness that made me feel like the town's history was still being written, and its very reputation was being redefined daily. I see the motorcycle community being as big a part of that story as the food, music, art, and colleges that are already deeply rooted in what most people have come to associate with Austin, TX. The city has a slogan that can be seen on stickers, shirts, novelty items and souvenirs, painted on walls and drawn on windows that reads "keep Austin weird." To that, I say, "keep Austin on 2wheels." Despite the traffic, this is a great riding city. There is so much to do and so many places to go that with this weather and this access to so many manufacturers' motorcycles available here, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not navigating this landscape on two. It is unlikely that I will be back here in the near future with my
motorcycle to see Austin, TX thru my helmet's visor but here if you ride a motorcycle, you are alleviating if I get the opportunity to ride Austin, I will not hesitate. traffic. It took us the whole summer to fix the bike and then we brought it to a plowed field and started to ride. We rode the whole day on that field and many more days after that. It must have been a hundred times that we rode up and down the field, but the bike was strong. Russian machine never breaks – even though we crashed!

installment focuses on a tip for corner entry that is both easy to implement and a big difference-maker for many riders. One of the most important contributors to rider confidence is to have a motorcycle that is completely predictable on corner entrance. In order to make precise and decisive steering inputs, riders must be able to very accurately predict the amount of bar pressure required to initiate the turn. One of the greatest challenges for riders on the entrance is to ensure that the suspension is moving as little as possible prior to this input.
extends and rides high in the travel. The absence of brake lever input allows the front end to essentially "float" and react with a lot of amplitude to every input (bumps, rider weight shifts, etc.). Forks are softest (meaning the effective spring rate is lightest) at the top of the stroke. When forks are allowed to ride "high" in the stroke, it is very easy for them to oscillate 5-10mm up and down in the travel, which makes for front end geometry that is constantly changing. When riders trail brake, even with very light pressure, the forks not only ride lower in the travel (making the turn-in effort easier) but they also react less severely to every input. The "preloading" of the front fork with lever input puts downward pressure on the front end, decreasing the unsettling motion of the forks at the top of the stroke. They also become stiffer, which by definition means that they move less with the same amount of applied force.
One simple way that riders can stabilize the front end is by trail braking. At the Penguin School, we advise using some degree of trail braking on every corner entrance that requires the motorcycle to slow down. However, many riders are afraid to trail brake because they are unsure if they have enough traction available to do so during the turnin process. We have found a simple solution for getting riders started on this path.
