EDITOR’S LETTER

Is it me, or did this year go by really fast? It seems like it was only yesterday that I was suiting up for my routine early Sunday morning blast. Now I’m figuring out who is getting gifts and what to get them. As a kid, I wasn’t allowed to celebrate the holidays. I know, boo hoo for me. Trust me, I’ve been extremely over compensating for it as an adult. What I have realized, as I have been making up for a large missing part of my childhood, is that it truly is better to give than to receive. I know that it is cliche, but there really is truth in this statement. This is our first Holiday Gift Guide. It’s full of gift ideas, grouped into price groups with direct links to the item’s websites for easy online purchasing. The team worked very hard to compile this guide and we hope that it proves to be helpful. As this year draws to a close, it’s a time of reflection. It’s a time to put things into perspective and a time to set new goals for the coming year. It’s also a time to reflect on the lives of our fellow riders that we have lost this past year. In the motorcycle club community, there is a tradition of raising your throttle hand and reciting the name of your lost ones.

THE PRESS ROOM KAWASAKI’S 2011 NINJA 1000 IS TURNING HEADS

K

awasaki’s all new 2011 Ninja 1000 is getting some well deserved attention. While it is based on the Z1000, the Ninja 1000 is not its replacement. What is most eye catching about the Ninja 1000 is its radical, full fairing bodywork. It maintains comfortable ergonomics while presenting itself as racy, attractive and sporty. Packing a 1043 cc, 16-valve, liquid cooled, in-line four engine, the Ninja 1000 has the muscle to back up its edgy looks.

THE 2011 YAMAHA YZF - R1

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 13

The Yamaha YZF-R1 has always looked fast. It has been the embodiment of the words: sleek, sharp and clean since it’s introduction in 1998. In the 90’s and early 2000’s, while other Japanese brands seemed more bulbous, the R1 looked like a wingless fighter jet.

mass and improves the overall weight distribution.

The 2011 R1 continues Yamaha’s legacy with great looks, intelligent engineering and proven technology. It’s bigger yet seems slimmer. It’s beefier but also lighter. It looks like it is moving, even when it’s standing still.

The bike is equipped with two projector type head lights, instead of four as on prior model years, that are mounted closer to the nose of the bike. Standing in any front quarter position or directly in front of the bike, the R1 gives the impression that it is staring you down with it’s big round lenses.

THE BODY The line work of the R1 has always been specific. There has never been a need to second guess it’s presence. The 2011 is chiseled from the previous model years. Harder lines and sharper edges gives the 2011 R1 its most aggressive look. It has a serious, distinctive style that sets it apart. The gas tank is longer and fits into the rigid yet light weight aluminum frame in a manner that centers the

14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

The subframe is magnesium, constructed by a “Controlled-Fill Die-Cast” method, that lightens the bike and optimizes mass centralization.

AIR INTAKE The repositioning of the head lights allows for closer placement of the ram air ducts. As the bike moves, air is forced through the ducts and into the air box. By putting the natural airflow to work during riding, the air box is pressurized resulting in an impressive delivery of power yet a reduction of intake noise.

THE ENGINE The 2011 R1 retains the same features of the 2010. Those features are significant nonetheless. The R1’s power is sourced from a crossplane crank shaft, derived directly from the Yamaha M1’s MotoGP technology. The concept of crossplaning is to position each piston 90 degrees from the next with uneven firing intervals (270 - 180 90 - 180 degrees). This results in a smoother, linear delivery of power. At lower rpm’s, the engine behaves more like a torquey twin cylinder engine. At higher rpm’s, the engine’s power rolls on in true inline four cylinder fashion. Infused with the engine is a balancer that counter rotates with the crankshaft. By rotating in opposite directions, the crankshaft and balancer increase power output and Yamaha claims that it also improves rider comfort. SUSPENSION The front 43 mm SOQI forks feature independent dampening as found on the Yamaha M1 MotoGP bike. The left fork handles compression while the right side handles the rebound. The rear shock is fully adjustable, featuring high and low speed compression dampening. Coupled with a bottom linkage, the rear shock works in harmony with the chassis to optimize the overall handling. RIDE BY WIRE TECHNOLOGY Instant throttle response is courtesy of the MotoGP inspired Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). The Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I) was a moto-tech breakthrough when it was introduced in 2007. This is a variable intake system that self adjusts to optimize air and fuel mixtures resulting in greater throttle response and more power. The 2011 R1 continues to utilize the YCC-I technology. Selectable throttle control maps are controlled by way of a handlebar switch. This Drive Mode (D-MODE) feature has two settings. The “A” mode offers a sportier engine response while the “B” mode grants one of a less aggressive nature.

TRANSMISSION The clutch set up of the 2011 R1 features “slippertype” characteristics that limit back end torque when decelerating from high speeds. “Slipper-type” characteristics are becoming staples on clutches of the 1000cc and above bikes. The bikes are producing more power and accelerating faster. It’s almost impossible to imagine these modern powerhouse machines without this feature. The 2011 Yamaha R1 is a sound machine. It has impressive, if not intimidating, aesthetics backed by

18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

a powerful engine and intelligent engineering. It remains the embodiment of the words: sleek, sharp and clean. It is a formidable track weapon. The 2010 model proved itself as Josh Hayes championed the 2010 AMA Superbike Series. In 2009, Ben Spies rocked the World Superbike paddock by winning the championship in his rookie year on the 2009 model. That was Ben’s first year on the bike. The 2011 model has the potential to continue to dominate on the world’s race stage, given the proper elements.

While other Japanese brands seemed more bulbous, the R1 looked like a wingless fighter jet.

A Tribute to our Commander In Chi

More than just your typical theme bike, this ZX-14 is also a quick history lesson in African American studies. When presented with the opportunity to create a President Obama themed bike, Art Lawrence of Lawrence Racing along with co-creator Mike Clark decided to take it a few steps further. “This bike is meant to pay respect and homage to those that laid the foundation for President Obama, says Art. superbly leading up to the image of our 44th President and First Lady. Given the significance of the subject matter, there was definitely no half-stepping. Case in point, the main image had to be done three times in order to capture the essence and emotion desired. Several other modifications were done to complement, but not over power this creation, such as RC Components wheels, Myrtle West swingarm, a Vee Rubber 360 Monster rear tire and tastefully added chrome accents laced throughout. ? ? ASK MELISSA ? THE GRID

Every month, SBI’s Road Race Contributing Editor and AMA Pro Racer, Melissa Paris will select a few questions from our readers and answer them. If you would like to have Melissa answer your questions about racing, riding, training... anything bike related, send her an email at melissa@sportbikesincmag.com.

Marco Sanna (Skippack, PA): You’ve had the fortune of riding at the top tracks around the country, if you had to choose from your favorites, which would they be and what do you love about them? And as a Pro level racer, what makes a track not just the best to race on, but the safest and keeps you wanting to come back? Finally, what do you think the racing facilities can do to help grow the sport? Melissa: There are definitely a few tracks that have a special place in my heart... I think the one I like the most is Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. It’s got a little bit of everything; fast corners, slow corners, you name it. I have always done better at tracks that are pretty flowing like Miller, so I’m sure that’s part of what I like about it also. What is even more special about Miller is that the place is so safe, and the pavement is so good, that no matter what, you can go out and leave everything you have on the racetrack.

Even when it’s pouring rain, the track has pretty amazing grip so you can still go and give 110%. I think it takes a few key elements to make a track awesome... First on the list has to be safety. A lot of the tracks we race on were really designed more with cars in mind. Runoff is a lot more important when you don’t have a roll cage around you. A safe track will usually mean exciting racing because the riders are more confident. As far as spectators go, it is also nice when you can get close to parts of the track to watch, or be able to see a lot of the track at one time. Some tracks get around this by using big jumbo screens. The fans can make it that much more fun for us when they come to the track, so it definitely helps if they are having a good time! I think that when a facility takes into account the racers’ safety and the spectators’ experience, the sport is naturally going to grow.

ASK MELISSA

Lion James (Blackwood, PA): Does the competition from the track ever follow you and Josh home/off the track? How do you handle the pressure and the responsibility/ social obligation to represent for the ladies in this male dominated sport? Melissa: Josh and I are definitely very competitive people, so it for sure follows us home. No matter what we’re doing, karting, cycling, running, etc we always want to be better than our friends. I’m sure some would say it’s not healthy to compete with your

? ? ?

spouse but we both thrive on that. To us, it’s a friendly competition. As far as the responsibility or social obligation to represent for ladies, I have to say there is absolutely no pressure for me. I never went into racing with the plan that I wanted to be the “fastest girl” or some sort of role model. I just want to race with the fastest people. If along the way I can inspire some other ladies to chase their own dreams, then that is awesome. It’s an honor to be able to have any sort of impact on another human being. But for me, I think the most important thing is to just try to be myself, and be someone my family can be proud of as well.

I think it takes a few key elements to make a track awesome... First on the list has to be safety. – MELISSA PARIS 34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE GRID osh Hayes’ stellar career includes JChampionship, winning the 2003 AMA Superstock the 2006 and 2007

AMA Formula Xtreme Championship and dominating the Toyota 200 endurance three years in a row at Willow Springs Raceway. 2010 presented Josh with a tangible opportunity to achieve his highest accolade yet, the AMA Superbike Championship. With the retirement of the 2009 Champion, Mat Mladin at the end of last year, the 2010 crown was anyone’s for the taking. Josh set his eyes on the prize and never looked back. The season got off to a rough start for Team Graves Yamaha at Daytona. And although Josh was running pretty

fast throughout practice, it was during qualifying the team realized they were further behind the curve than they believed, evidenced from blowing a

clutch at the start to also running off the track a couple of times. With this new reality in mind, the team knuckled down and went hard to work with making the necessary power and

speed adjustments. Their diligence, tenacity and hard work began to pay off with things coming together during the very next round in Fontana where Josh led both of those races. As a matter of fact, he led most other races at various points during the season. So, what was the key? Consistency. “The R1 may not necessarily be the fastest bike out there, but it is the best all around bike allowing me to perform consistently well,” Josh said. He is the first to admit he would like to have won more races, but running a consistent and smart season was about to pay off big at the end of the season. During the final round at Barber Motorsports Park severe weather from the previous night combined with damp track conditions presented an unwel-

However, Josh remained relentless, calculated and smooth in his pursuit for his first ever AMA Superbike Championship title by riding into history with a seventh place finish and claiming his Superbike Championship. “It really meant a lot for me to bring this Championship home considering how well the R1 has done world over,” Josh said proudly. “It’s a little harder being the guy the others chase, so there is a bit of an adjustment there for me, but I accept it.”

THE HARD LINE: BATTLE OF THE LEGENDS

Story and Photos by Rickey Gadson

S

ince I began drag racing, there have been rivalries within the street racing circle, between me and some of the “now Legends” of the sport. Just like other Professional venues, fans have their favorites of who they think is the best in the business. I’ve been thinking over the past few years of a way to put the world’s best in 1 arena to duke it out for the title, and prove once and for all, which fan favorite would emerge on top.

I recently decided to structure a competition where the “greats” in the sport would have to be voted in. The racers picked in this challenge are considered “Legends” in the sport, but who haven’t raced against each other in years.

My friend, Chad Kinser, just bought a ZX14 a couple of months ago, and decided to let a couple of riders with the reputations of being fast, ride his motorcycle during a recent MIROCK(series) event, to see who would be the fastest. The competition between the riders (my nephew, Richard, included) made me realize just how competitive the greats in this sport really are.

One of the 14’s they had to navigate down the quarter mile was in showroom condition, stock height, no strap (to lower the front) and the only addition was a Brock’s Performance Street Meg Exhaust, which only made this incredible powerful motorcycle even harder to ride!

44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

They would have to compete on a level playing field by riding the same 3 motorcycles (Kawasaki ZX14s), which were all prepared with different setups.

Each rider voted in had to make one pass on all three bikes provided. An average would be established and then the 3 riders with the best averages would qualify for the finals, where each would get 1 chance to navigate a 4th surprise motorcycle (Showroom condition, stock ZX10) down the dragstrip. The rider with the best time would be considered to have the “Best Clutch Hand” in the business! There are two more surprises which are considered to be the best part about the challenge! In motorcycle drag racing, the “power to weight” issue is especially important because the smaller the rider, the faster he can go, because it takes less horsepower to move less weight. To measure each rider’s “left hand” capability in a fair comparison, a minimum weight of 160 pounds was established. A weigh-in would be conducted prior to mounting the motorcycle and weight would be added to the smaller riders to equal 160 pounds by way of a weight vest. The biggest surprise is…No inches were added to the swingarm of the bikes used…WHATSOEVER! The bikes were all setup with a stock wheelbase.

After I structured the competition, I went on several discussion web forums to find out who should be voted in, and that is when the chaos began! I explained very specifically that the challenge was to determine the “Best That Ever Did This”, referring to the last 20 years of drag racing. The forums went crazy - voting in people I had never heard of, like lil’ Stevie from Louisiana, and so on. I quickly realized I had to revise the competition by adding three more challenges after the “Battle of the Legends” stock wheelbase challenge was complete. After the completion of “Battle of the Legends”, next year I will host: Battle of “Today’s” stars Battle of the “Unknowns” Battle of the “Heavyweights” Here are some sneak peeks into the competition. Stay tuned next month!! I also need to thank: Kawasaki Dynojet Brock’s Performance products World Wide Bearings Schnitz Racing

WHAT DOES ERNIE VIGIL WANT FOR CHRISTMAS? Story: Lisa Macknik Photos courtesy of Ernie Vigil, Eric Hameister and Icon Motosports

“MORE GAS!” Harder, faster, bigger is how he rides. Constantly pushing his skills to the edge is what he lives for. He is a pioneer and an advocate for equalizing the sport of Professional Street Freestyle Competition with all others. Gaining the respect as a true athlete has taken time, but the blood, sweat and tears have paid off. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 51

ERNIE VIGIL E

rnie Vigil grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico; a city with 500,000 people trying to make a living, one way or another. Vigil’s career choice was simple riding. “Riding a motorcycle is what I do. It’s my life.” His passion is undeniable; it’s as if he was born to ride. He may not have known what he wanted to do at birth, but just a few years later, on his seventh birthday, his parents gave him the most life-changing gift you could ever give a little boy; a dirt bike. For Ernie it was so much more. It was the spark that lit the fire within him. “When I’m on a bike, nothing else matters. I don’t know what it is; it’s just part of me.” After ripping up the dirt for several years, Vigil and his buddies decided to all go get street bikes together. Surprisingly, Ernie wanted nothing to do with wheelies or anything of the sort. He was perfectly content with keeping it on two wheels. The problem was that all five guys competed in motocross together, so naturally they began to try and one-up each other. Vigil couldn’t let them make him look bad so he joined in, and from that point on he was hooked. The guys then decided to start a group “because it was the cool thing to do”. So in 2002 Team Outermost was born. They traveled to local competitions together, filmed themselves practicing and posted them on stunt forums to try and get their name out there. At this point, the sport of Street Freestyle was new and very misunderstood by both riders and society alike. Some riders didn’t realize the amount of dedication and athleticism it takes to ride competitively. So, slowly the group of five faded, and soon they were finding replacements more and more regularly. After finally creating a solid group of passionate riders, Team Outermost started producing quality videos and immediately received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. They had finally made a name for themselves and were on their way to proving to the nation that Freestyle riders aren’t just a bunch of clueless daredevils trying to turn heads. People began realizing the level of athleticism involved as well as the vast amount of knowledge needed to build and maintain a quality machine.

ERNIE VIGIL

54 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

After five years riding as a team, Vigil decided to continue his career solo since he was the only one who really stuck with it. By this time, social networking was booming and it was the preferred source for marketing, advertising and of course, networking. This was exactly the jump start Vigil needed. He began filming more videos and posting them, gaining more and more fans. His big film debut was when he worked as Jim Carey’s stunt double in “Yes Man”. A scene with Vigil doing a wheelie on an 1100cc Ducati, wearing nothing but a hospital gown, and if that wasn’t enough, it was shot directly in front of the Griffith Observatory in LA. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience, “one I will take to my grave.” Although he enjoyed the experience of seeing Hollywood first hand and of course meeting Ace Ventura himself, Vigil “got a glimpse” of the demanding life of a film star and would much rather be doing what he loves most, competing. “I love the sport side of riding so much; I just couldn’t sacrifice it to ‘go Hollywood’”. His die hard attitude was apparent since during his learning years, Vigil didn’t have any riders to look up to, simply because no one had done it before. He had to

learn by doing, and falling, and getting up and doing it again. Now, he is that idol that so many aspiring riders look up to and learn from. Some advice he gives is, “Never give up. As long as you stay focused and keep riding, things will get better. Oh, and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Because if you want it bad enough you have to be out there every day working on it. If you don’t, there is someone else out there who wants it more and will get it.” Over the last couple of years, Ernie has had a front row seat to the evolution of freestyle riding as a competitive sport. At its infancy, the competition scene was unorganized, underfunded and filled with misconceptions. Many times traveling to these events caused moments of uncertainty for Vigil since there was no guarantee of any payout, let alone any spectators. Many people thought it was an illegitimate sport, unworthy of equal respect. These were not “athletes” they were hooligans swerving in and out of traffic, attempting ill-prepared wheelies and out of control stoppies. This was all too common of an attitude amongst the people. Little did they know that these riders never practiced on public streets

ERNIE VIGIL and use the highest level of protective gear. Slowly but surely the close minded opinions started to change, and now the sport is bigger than ever! Events now have corporate sponsorships, huge payouts for the winners and a guaranteed crowd. It has come a long way, “it’s cool to see”. Since he has begun his journey on two wheels, well, mostly on one, Vigil has gone from posting homemade videos online, to starting his own group, to riding professionally for Ducati and ICON. His mantra of “More Gas” will continue to drive him further and farther into what is possible to achieve. Ernie Vigil has evolved right alongside the very sport he loves to his core, and he will continue to lead future generations of freestyle competitors for years to come.

Detroit Icons

Chapter: Detroit, MI | Founded: 2008 | Members: 25 Elected Officials: President - Showstopper | Vice President - Hitz Govenor - Paperchase Sergeant-At-Arms - Superman | Sergeant-At-Arms - Crosshairs

Rocker Interpretation: The origin and explanation of the Icon logo in the center patch is an arbitrary person (meaning it can be a man or woman) sitting on a motorcycle. The wings are for two separate reasons. One reason for the wings is they are the representation of the person rising above all others and circumstances to be in that “Icon” position and the second reason is because each member is lead and protected by God as they ride and participate in the club.

60 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Club milestones/memorable moments: This past year the club was able to bring in Jason Britton and Team No Limit to make the annual “Saving Lives Motorcycle Rally” a huge success. With bringing in Jason Britton and his team, the club was able to break into “Corporate America” and partner with major corporations. The impact of these partnerships was significant because no other club has been able to partner with large corporations as they have done. Forging the relationships this year has also opened doors for future ventures with the same corporations.

Future of the club: One of the future goals and missions is to try and change Michigan law to create stiffer penalties for people who hit and injure motorcycle riders. Through corporate partnerships and state government relationships, the club is hopeful that their goals will be met. The Icons’ immediate goals are to continue to partner with those who are in the fight against breast cancer, homelessness and attempting to provide a better future for kids in needs.

MEET YOUR MASTER CYLINDER “My motorcycle comes stock with a Brembo master cylinder. Why should I spend $250 or more to upgrade it?”

T

o understand why an aftermarket Brake master cylinder “feels” better you must first understand the relationship between piston diameter and leverage offset. The piston diameter is quite simply the size of the internal piston that forces the fluid out of the master cylinder to the brake caliper(s). Most OEM master cylinders use a 16mm piston while the majority of aftermarket units use a 19mm piston. A 16mm piston x 10mm of travel flows approx. 2009 cubic mm A 19mm piston x 10mm of travel flows approx. 2834 cubic mm The more fluid the master cylinder flows the harder it is to pull the lever over the same distance. This is where leverage offset and ratio comes into play. The leverage offset is the distance between the pivot point of the lever and the pressure point on the piston. You can see in the illustration that this master cylinder has a leverage offset of 18mm and it has a piston size of 19mm therefore making it a 19x18. 16x18 has a ratio of .88 19x20 has a ratio of .95 19x18 has a ratio of 1.05 The closer the leverage offset is to the pivot point the more leverage you achieve, creating an easier lever pull to do the same amount of work. The effects of leverage ratio and piston size over lever travel: A 16x18 master cylinder will require approximately 8.8mm of lever travel to achieve 2009 cubic mm of fluid displacement. A 19x18 will require 7.43mm of travel and a 19x20 will require 6.72mm of travel to achieve the same fluid displacement. When you look at the distance of lever travel in relationship to ratio the difference in “feel” becomes apparent. The longer the travel the more “control” you have, and the shorter the travel the “harder” or more “wooden” the lever feels. Most racers prefer a higher leverage ratio for more braking power and a firmer lever but there is a fine balance between power and “feel”. The OEM prefers a ratio that gives the rider

68 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

a lot of control at the sacrifice of a softer lever. It is important to analyze exactly what you are expecting from a master cylinder upgrade so you can wisely choose a ratio that will perform to your expectations.

THIS LIFE: CUSTOMER SERVICE

Story by Tyson Beckford

**Editor’s Note: What you are about to read is a true and factual. The names have been changed to prevent Armageddon. **

C

ustomer service is a phrase that a lot of brands, dealerships and bike shops seem to have forgotten lately - the simple thing called the “customer is always right!” I’m not saying that the customer should get away with murder, but at least treat the customer well so they can return and be a customer for life. This is America! And this is an American way of life! I can name a few shops in the New York and Pennsylvania areas where I wouldn’t send my worst enemy! I think that all places of business should have an A-Z rating similar to how restaurants are rated: “A” being the best and “Z” the worst, and the rating should be placed in the window of the business. This way you would know who you are dealing with. The shops I’m referencing know who they are! I asked my editor if I could I list them but then I decided not to do that because that may start a war. I’m not really one for battle but my heart don’t pump no Kool Aid!! But these shops need be called out for their lack of customer service. We, as the customer, have power! We have money and a voice! When people ask me about motorcycles, I give them my honest opinion and let them know who’s who. Many people ask me what brand of bike I ride or what gear I wear, so I can give my opinion on what to buy and who to buy from. For example, I had a BRAND X and I had a horrible experience getting the bike serviced!! The quality of the product

70 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

was below average as well. This company is bound to go out of business soon! The dealership where I took the bike for service had the worst service department and management in the motorcycle world! They couldn’t sell hot dogs on 42nd street much less repair the hot dog cart! I was also sent to a shop where they were tasked to do a custom build on the BRAND X and what a nightmare that was! In the end, I had to sell the bike for almost nothing because I refused to have an inferior bike in my stable of quality machines at my house. One of my rules is to look at the shop or the custom builder and find out what they own or what they ride or drive. That piece of information always lets me know what kind of shop it is. I’m not going to let you work on my bike if yours is not as hot as mine or better. I also look at the cleanliness of the shop and whether they have updated machines and tools. I recommend when buying anything in this economy to do your research and ask friends and other riders about your potential purchase. You can even talk to the people that work at the shops and dealerships in your area to find out how they treat customers and to see how the service department operates. It is your money and your right to have a great working bike! It is important to you and your safety, so also find out what kind of warranty is offered and inquire about the return policy for parts and products. You will also want to make sure that the people working on your bike are certified mechanics. Customer service: I live by this standard and it has worked for me, except for that junk BRAND X. LMFAO!

Memorizing the track is a critical step to the learning process that many riders skip, making the development of their skills significantly more difficult. In order to be able to focus your attention on a new riding technique, your location on the track needs to be something that you have already settled...else you will not have the capacity left to make any progress. The process of deciphering a corner 72 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

begins with the selection of your apex. The apex is defined as the exact point where you are closest to the inside edge of a given corner. Why is this important? There are many reasons, but without a clear apex it is impossible to determine your major turn in point. How can you know where to turn or how hard to turn if you do not have a precise target for which to aim? To add to this point, your brake point (in an ideal world) should be set so that it allows you to approach your turn point at exactly the speed that will just allow you to get the motorcycle down to the apex. Without a clear apex, turn points and brake points become impossible to

pin down and the entrance to any corner becomes confusing. The problem begins because many riders don’t know exactly how to set an apex. In recent years at the Penguin Racing School, we have been teaching our students how to first determine the type of corner that they are approaching in order to help them in the process of establishing an apex. Once the basic type of corner is determined, our students are able to tailor their line to match the proper strategy for that corner. For the sake of simplicity, we try to take all corners and place them in

one of three categories: entrance is that a rider cannot brake, turn and focused, roll speed focused and exit accelerate at a maximum through any focused. Not every corner on every single corner. Every act (for example, track will fit perfectly into one of these getting on the gas before the apex) imaginary “boxes”, but when riders comes at the expense of something examine most corners, there are almost always obvious Eric Wood clues that provide a good place to start. For many riders, the confidence derived simply from being able to pick out an apex using this basic method moves them well along the way to relaxing and riding harder. The great part about this process is that it doesn’t matter if you are a racer or a track day rider, it works for everyone. When your line through a corner is centered around a properly chosen apex you will be able to ride faster and with less risk. Imagine Valentino Rossi riding through a corner at the very limit of traction on nearly any line that he wants (he can). However, even when factoring in his immense talent, if Valentino were forced to ride the wrong line (say, the line of a new track day rider) he may not even be able to keep up with good regional expert who was on the right line. Lines, in the end, determine how much traction you have available for braking, turning and acceleration. The more upright the motorcycle is on the way in, the more front grip you will have available to brake with. The same principle applies to exits and acceleration. In addition, the less time you can spend actively turning the bars (loading both the front and rear tires), the more grip you will have available to carry corner speed. This is a very important concept that we will expand upon in a future article. The main challenge

else (being able to trail brake deep into the corner). The key to analyzing a corner properly stems from the conscious application of these simple principles. The focus of any corner should always be where the speed is, and a majority of corners out there involve substantial braking, acceleration or both. The most important factor when analyzing most corners is not the corner itself (unless it is a very fast corner). Rather, it is most often what precedes and what follows a corner that has the greatest affect on our apex and line selection. Maintaining speed from a long straight or getting a good drive onto a long stretch of

racetrack is always a top priority. In the diagram below, showing exaggerated differences for clarity, the yellow line paints a common starting point for most track riders when they are left to their own devices. These riders place the apex in the center of the corner and use the classic “outsideinside-outside” strategy. This roll speed focused line is correct only in corners where the primary focus is to increase roll speed through the corner. This strategy is a good choice if your corner is a “connection” corner that does not involve significant acceleration or braking. In addition, if the corner itself is very high speed (4th-5th gear) then maintaining roll speed becomes increasingly more important and a roll speed focused line should be considered. The first priority that should be considered when establishing your corner strategy is the length and speed of the straightaway that follows the corner. The reason that this takes priority over the entrance is that an important straight can be 2500+ feet long. Starting a long straight with a 5mph head start will help you ride faster for 2500 feet. Most braking zones comprise, at most, the final 20% of the straight. It only stands to reason that it does not make sense to gain 5mph on the entrance if it means sacrificing 5mph on the way out (when you are covering 5 times the ground). In order to get a good drive off of a corner, your bike needs to get upright as soon as possible. The more horsepower you have, the more important this principle becomes. The red line SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 73

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS shows the late apex strategy for a corner that has an important straight on the exit. The entrance trajectory is wider and there is an area just prior to the apex where this line tightens up, signifying a defined turn in point before the apex. This extra turning requires the sacrifice of some entrance speed, but the reward is that the motorcycle is much more upright at the apex. This allows the throttle to be opened before the apex and the motorcycle gets to full throttle much sooner than when it is on the yellow or blue lines. This exit focused corner strategy is what is often referred to as the “classic” racing line. If the corner you are analyzing does not have a significant drive on the exit then you will often want to try to maintain that entrance speed as long as you can. In order to do this the

74 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

motorcycle should be upright as long as possible so that the braking zone can be extended deeper into the corner. With this strategy, we often make early trajectory change known as a “pre-turn” that allows us to come into the corner on the right line while leaving the bike reasonably upright. The blue line shows the early apex, straight entrance and post-apex effort needed to follow this strategy. It is important to note that while the early apex line is an extremely valuable strategy in certain corners, it is also very often the mistaken path taken by a rider who panics on the entrance of a corner and turns in too early. If you ever find yourself putting in significant bar input after the apex of any corner that has any kind of meaningful acceleration on the exit - Stop! This is the single most common reason that

newer riders fall down. The combination of acceleration (which unweights the front tire) and turning is often enough to exceed the limits of traction of the front tire. This method of establishing a corner type to establish an initial apex has proven to be very effective in giving riders a solid place to start. Remember, the focus is always where the speed is. Next month, we will explore several of the factors that weigh in to our line selection after you have determined what the major focus of the corner should be. This strategy is a great place to start, but there is much more to discuss.

STAFF STUFF GYTR • DUAL OVAL SLIP-ON EXHAUSTS Leon Brittain

Absolutely one of my favorite mods to my 2004 R1 is my GYTR Dual Oval Slip-On Exhausts. I’ve had aftermarket exhausts on my other bikes, but for this one I wanted to stick with Yamaha products. Another reason for this decision was the aesthetics, given its carbon fiber shell and aluminum end caps. When Yamaha released their updated R1 in 2004 there weren’t any aftermarket exhausts immediately available that flowed with the lines of this then new design that also included carbon fiber. Beyond looks, this system sounds great with Yamaha’s Silent Sport pillow packing. Going out for a ride is true music to my ears. www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/gytr Rating: 6 (out of 6)

ICON • AIRFRAME CONSTRUCT HELMET Allan Lane

My Icon Construct helmet really has become a staple in my night time riding gear. Considering that 99 percent of my gear is black or dark colored, it is actually refreshing to have an off white item in my selection of helmets. The light, unobstructed color of the Construct helmet definitely offers me some visibility when riding at night. I often wear it during my day time rides as well. It breathes well, it’s on the lighter side of the helmet weight spectrum and it just looks cool. I dig it www.rideicon.com Rating: 5 (out of 6)
