the press room Honda issues RECALL on Gold Wings

In a press release, Honda stated that the base for the recall is related to a “potential defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in the secondary master cylinder on certain 2001-2010 and 2012 model year GL1800 motorcycles.” The rear brake master cylinder could possibly malfunction, increasing the temperature and pressure. Enough heat can be generated to cause the rear brake to catch fire. Honda has sent SAFETY RECALL letters to registered owners that will instruct them to schedule service at their local dealerships.

Phil Schilling and Doug Polen inducted into AMA Hall of Fame This past November, Doug Polen and Phil Schilling were among five newly inducted members of the AMA Hall of Fame.

Polen was a dominant national and world champion roadracer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Included in his impressive winning performances were two World Superbike Championships in 1991 and 1992, and the 1993 AMA Superbike Championship all aboard Ducati Superbikes. Schilling was one of motorcycling’s most accomplished journalists and an expert race tuner who set the early mark for Ducati motorcycle’s on-track success in America. In 1977, Schilling and Hall of Famer Cook Neilson entered a Ducati in the Daytona 200 and gave Ducati its first AMA Superbike win in the United States.

Öhlins Launches World’s First Aftermarket Mechatronic Suspension The world’s first aftermarket electronic suspension system (ESA), designed to replace the electronically adjustable suspension on the BMW R 1200 GS ESA was introduced in November. With its Öhlins TTX shocks and Öhlins ESA ECU, it’s the most advanced mechatronic suspension system available, from its dynamic mechanics to its autonomic electronics. The mechatronic system from Öhlins interacts directly with the R 1200 GS ESA’s primary ECU, plugging directly into the existing user interface. The kit includes front and rear TTX shocks, a wiring harness, and a dedicated ESA ECU, utilizing the OEM display and rider controls for adjustment. As evidence of its smartas-heck intelligence, the Öhlins mechatronic system features a

semi-active function, automatically adjusting the suspension damping in relationship to the motorcycle’s speed. With the latest technology of twin-tube TTX shocks mated to a brilliant ECU, the mechatronic system from Öhlins provides a double upgrade: an athletegrade suspension mated to headof-the-class electronics.

the damping is further increased to ‘Sport’ mode, for a more sporting controllability. When the speeds decrease, the damping reverts back to its original settings through the intermediate ‘Normal’ mode. This feature makes Öhlins’ ESA replacement system the World’s first autonomic aftermarket suspension system.

Using the BMW controls on the handlebars, the Öhlins system allows the rider to choose between BMW’s multiple driving modes and damping levels, along with various spring pre-load settings on the rear shock. But that’s not all. In ‘Comfort’ mode, the Öhlins ECU monitors the bike’s speed, and when it exceeds 80kph (49mph) the suspension’s damping is automatically altered to the firmer ‘Normal’ setting. When the speed exceeds 120kph (74mph),

The Öhlins mechatronic suspension system also allows riders to customize the spring rate on their R 1200 GS ESA through fitment of new springs as well as have their shocks fully serviced and maintained by one of the many specialist Öhlins Centers across the USA. The Öhlins BMW R1200GS ESA replacement system is now available, at the incredibly low MSRP of $3,279.00.

ZX-14R

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 13

T

he 2012 Kawasaki ZX14R is big, mean and green. From the bikes introduction in 2006, the mission was clear and simple: Dominance. However, anyone can strap wheels and a saddle on a rocket and wish the pilot good luck and godspeed. What Kawasaki has done with the ZX14R over the years is refined the beast, contained is power into an above average example of motorcycle technology. The 2012 model year sets a bench mark in the theory of applied controlled chaos. THE BODY AND FRAME The ZX14R looks angry. It has the appearance of the lone wolf that walks up to the bar, orders

14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

the roughest whiskey, tells the barkeep to leave the bottle and scans the interior of the saloon like she has a score to settle. That’s right, “she”. The ZX14R is a well balanced display of aggression and sophisticated sex appeal. She may not play well with others, but everyone wants to play with her. Most notably are the changes to the nose and side fairings. The nose fairing has been sharpened to a definitive edge housing the quad headlight system and the amply sized ram-air duct. The side fairings are now sculpted with three dimensional fins, unlike the implied fins of previous model years. The bike’s profile stance

resembles the offspring of a shark and a B52 bomber. It truly is the small things that make a huge difference. The aesthetics of the 2012 ZX14R boost all of the correct upgrades needed to for the machine’s visual improvement instead of a departure. Kawasaki has made the 2012 model available in three colors: Metallic Spark Black, Candy Surf Blue and the special edition Golden Blazed Green. The frame is constructed with a monocoque technique, the same used in aircrafts. The frame is lightweight, slim and strong. Other cast aluminum sections are

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 15

made in a die cast process including the steering head and swing arm pivot. The length of the swing arm has been increased resulting in greater stability, especially at higher speeds. SUSPENSION Presented as the best handling ZX14R yet, this model has been stated to be more nimble than the ZX6R. A beast of this size and temperament would clearly only be designed to be very fast in a very straight line... The amount of power produced from such a behemoth can barely be contained let alone handled... Curves would simply be out of the question... Right? The ZX14R has never really had issues in the “how does she handle” department if you were to ask a dedicated Kawasaki owner. However, the proof is now in the proverbial pudding. The 2012 model’s suspension set up has been reworked. The front suspension features 43mm inverted forks with fully adjustable preload, 18 way compression and 15 way rebound damping adjustment.

The rear bottom link Uni Trak adjustable gas charged mono shock features an adjustable preload, step less rebound and compression damping adjustments and adjustable ride height. 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

BRAKES Dual semi floating 310mm petal discs with dual radial mounted, four piston calipers provide stopping power as the front brake set up. The rear brake is a single 250mm petal disc with a twin piston caliper composition. The stock brake pads have been to revised to make braking fade free and more powerful with a progressive touch at the radial pump front master cylinder lever. Each piston features its own pad for cooling efficiency. They can handle a high level of heat and maintain a feeling of consistent braking. INTAKE AND EXHAUST The ZX14R’s lung system has been revamped. The header pipes feature a tapered diameter design while the mufflers new shape are less loud than previous model years. There are dual catalyzers plus a third honey comb catalyzer in the collector in addition to the internal silencer construction keep the ZX14R well in the scope of emission standards while still delivering power at the top end. The ram air duct intake sucks in cooler air and delivers it to the bigger and improved efficiency air filter before flowing into the powerhouse engine. The airbox has been relocated to inside of the frame and is designed to make air filter cleaning less complicated.

THE ENGINE The 1441cc output and 84.0 x 65.0mm bore times stroke ratio are all compliments of the new four stroke, liquid cooled inline four engine. The improved torque and power are in direct relation to the stretched stroke design, ported cylinder heads, lighter pistons and the 12.3:1 compression ratio. The 2012 ZX14R’s redeveloped engine technology includes a piston jet spray system that sprays a cooling lubrication to the bottom of each piston to keep running temperatures cool so they can produce a more consistent delivery of power. The aluminum cylinder bores are chrome composite plated, thus they are lighter, stronger and quickly move heat away from the combustion chamber and piston to again offer cooler engine temperatures. The overall engine has been streamlined. Its lighter, nimble and sacrifices nothing when it comes to the ability to produce power. 18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

ELECTRONICS The ZX14R offers the rider the selection of high and low maps with its two mode digital ignition. Power in the low and mid range is improved via the digital timing advance. The individual ignition coils are mounted on the spark plugs enhance the firing, optimizing cylinder timing. The traction control has three modes and the status is displayed on the LCD digital readout. The rider can select the mode via the left handle bar switch assembly. The 2012 model’s ECU not only includes idle speed control, it also controls the sub-throttle valves on the new 44mm Mikuni throttle bodies. The fuel injectors spray laterally at a 20 degree angle and produce a droplet 75 micron in size. THE DASH The dual analog speedometer and tachometer now feature black faces for improved readability. The LCD digital displays the odometer, two trip meters, fuel gauge and other vital

info including the traction control status. The shift indicator is programmable and can be customized to fit the fit the rider’s preferred shifting behavior. Additionally, the ZX14R features clutch indicator lamp that is also programmable to the rider’s likings. THE INCREDIBLE... The 2012 Kawasaki ZX14R is currently leading the pack in all categories for its class. By the numbers, it is the most powerful production bike in existence. Its revamped body and new engine score high accolades in the form and function department. The 2012 Kawasaki ZX14R is a massive step forward in the every long pursuit of power and speed paired with technology and aesthetics. It may be the most powerful production bike in existence, but it also is the most impressive looking model in its class.

I

hope nobody is as bummed as I am that it’s still the off season and there is still three months left until next season starts. I figure since it is the off season, I can talk about what exactly goes on in a racers life throughout the five months when there is no racing going on. For me, I am still only 17, so right after the AMA Awards Banquet in New Jersey I rushed home to make it to school the next day. Ever since then I’ve pretty much just been going to school and doing a little training while waiting on news and plans for next season. The most exciting part of the past two months has been getting a brand new Suzuki RMZ 250 and being able to go ride motocross while the weather is still warm in New York. As far as roadracing goes I have yet to ride a roadrace bike since the finale at Jersey so I’ve definitely been a bit bummed about that. But as I write this, I’m in California preparing to ride at Jason Pridmore’s STAR School so I’m definitely excited about that. Other than that, I’ve just been working with my Uncle Richie to sort out our plans for next season and there has definitely been great progress. Hopefully, we will be releasing some more info shortly as to what our exact plans will be but I hope to be racing in AMA Pro Supersport. I’m super excited for the season to start. There’s a lot that goes into making such plans and I’m extremely fortunate to have my uncle there to handle pretty much everything. You have to decide which bike you want to ride and which comes with the best package of support. Then you have to find some sort of funding since it costs upwards of $150,000 to $250,000 to complete a whole season. You have to find a solid crew that you know can help you win races. Then you have to plan for things such as transportation, travel, hotels, etc. Then you have to go out and win races, and that is my goal is for next season! 34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE STRAIGHT LINE: The Youngest in Charge

Words: Dystany Spurlock Images: Courtesy of Dystany Spurlock

In 2010, Dystany Spurlock set a new record on a stock BMW S1000RR at the Valdosta Manufacturers Cup Finals in Valdosta, GA. She was only 18 years of age. And that’s why she’s the youngest in charge. Email her at Dystany@Sportbikesincmag.com.

s it December all ready? Where did Iracing the time go. The end of the 2011 season has come to a close

and it was truly a great one. This year was my first year racing in the Crazy 8’s class in the MIROCK Series. It was a challenging season through all of the trials and tribulations and that is what made it awesome. At the beginning of the season I could not wait for the first race. I was more excited than a kid in a candy store. The season opener was in Rockingham, NC. I was racing on a 2009 GSXR 1000. I made it to the 1/4 finals. I was smiling for ear to ear.

Two races later, the unthinkable happened. My first race on my BMW S1000RR. My bike had just got the swing arm, sprocket, chain, lowering links and shock put on it. This was the night before the race and I decided to test and tune in the grudge class to get accustomed to my bike. I was in the left lane at Budds Creek, the light turned green, I left the line and out of no where... I flipped. I didn’t get hurt thanks to my protective Speed and Strength leathers. I was more worried about my bike than anything. After we looked at my bike the only thing that was messed up was the gear shifter and the handle bars. My

team fixed them both in less than twenty minutes. After the issues were fixed I was ready to get back on the track. After my wreck I ran the fastest times that I had ever done. Even with some set backs throughout the season I finished in the top ten. I was very proud of myself. This season has taught me that in order to get to where you want to be you have to stay focused and determined no matter what obstacles get thrown your way. Overall, this year was great and I am very thankful for all that has come my way.

huge turnout and great weather highlighted the final big race of the season as racers, fans, and vendors invaded Adel, GA for the Manufacturers Cup Race at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Everything from grudge racing bikes to top fuel screamers hit the track for one final big race weekend of the year. Familiar MIROCK racers were on hand to compete in the popular

8.88-index class designated for fast street bikes. This is the first time this class was run at the Manufacturers Cup and from the turnout of racers, this class looks to have earned a permanent spot at this event. The Spiderman Larry McBride and Tommy Grimes faced off in the PR Factory Top Fuel class with Spiderman taking the win with a 222.14 MPH run, elapsed time of 6.009.

Star Racing Pro Comp finals pitted Ronald Procopio against Keith Lynn. Procopio’s 170.32 MPH run with an ET of 4.148 edged out Lynn for the win. Bud Yoder took the Orient Express Pro Street win on his 2010 Hayabusa running 204.23 MPH, ET 7.158. Johnny Dobrin faced Jeremy Teasley in the Penske Racing Real Street finals. Dobrin took 1st running 191.57 MPH, ET

would like to invite you on a ride down the dragstrip with me. So strap on your helmet, lower your heart rate, tighten up your core muscles and let’s go! I will start with me fully suited in my leathers except for my gloves and helmet. I’m in line all paired up

with my opponent in my Pro Real Street Class. We are three pairs behind in line before its go time. My eyes are looking straight forward watching the other competitors race down 1320 feet of sticky 1/4 mile surface. I have already blocked all sounds out at this point. I hear nothing!

The switch is turned on and my mind and body have morphed to a human machine where space and time is transformed. I put my helmet on and strap it then my gloves. Left hand then right. I’m now sitting on my 360lb 1000cc monster that makes 320hp to the rear wheel. There is one pair ahead of us, now. I go over my check points with my Chief: Airshifter, check! My NOS bottle is turned on and heated by my crew chief Biggavelli. He yells

“950psi!” That means that we are a go. I start my bike, Goldie, for warm up and I feel the rumble of the big cams rattle, sounding like they are trying to come though the valve cover. We are waved to come out onto the racetrack now. Its show time! I look to the right. My opponent and I nod our heads and a steal a brief moment, eye to eye. We start our burnout and I bring my rpm’s up to seven grand and release the clutch and hold the front brake. The

rear wheels spins as I lean to the left for four seconds then to the right for four seconds and then straight. I release the front brake and continue to smoke the tire for another second as I roll off the throttle and pull in the clutch. I put the bike in neutral and line it up straight. I see the photographer to my left, mid track. I see the crowd and fans zooming in anticipation. I activate my NOS switch and my data logger. I’m fully armed! I put my helmet shield down and put the bike in gear. I get my body and position set. Head

down, feet back... I take a deep breath. My heart rate decreases, inching forward with my rpm’s set at six grand. My clutch is engaged just enough for me to feel the trigger before its pulled. The tree lights are set. At this point nothing else in the world matters. For that split second when I’m focused on the tree at the starting line, time stops. I can see the bulbs light up in slow motion, four tenths of a second. I’m in the matrix. My reaction is comparable to a super hero catching a bullet with his teeth: uncanny. I launch eighty five percent throttle while at the same time, aggressively engaging the clutch but not all the way out of my hand yet. I’m feeling the G forces as if I was a fighter pilot! The front wheel is three inches off the ground while the rear Pirelli tire is planted and sticking. Clutch is out. 56 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

One hundred percent throttle about sixty feet out. First stage of NOS kicks in with 30hp while I’m still in first gear, hanging the wheel. The shift light flashes. I hit my second gear and press my main stage button for my seventy shot of NOS simultaneously. My feet are still back until I get the front wheel landed Third gear, we land and I pick my feet up. Tucked, head down, motor screaming, hitting shift points, hand full of throttle, nitros oxide and I am trucking! I reach the halfway point of the racetrack in 5.27 seconds at 148mph in 4th gear. I see my opponent in my peripheral vision to my right. I hit fifth gear approaching redline and Goldie starts to power wheelie at 160mph! I short shift and land the front wheel again like I’m flying in from Miami at Newark airport.

My opponent is behind me so I got him! I smell blood and can taste victory. Sixth gear and I am crossing the finish line almost at redline at184 mph. I see my win light come on to my left. I let off my NOS button, roll out the gas, sit-up and I feel the 150 plus mph wind hit me in my chest. I let my body act like a parachute to slow me down. I apply the brake slow and steady as I’m running out of shut down area. I pull off the racetrack, shut my switches off nod to my opponent, “Good race.” I pull my shield up, heart rate returns to normal, I can see and hear like a normal human at this point. The entire race takes place in eight seconds at over 180 mph! What a life! Loyalty is everything.

y stunt career, especially in the beginning, was plagued with cynical men who made breaking into this sport anything but easy. Now after four years of hanging in there and proving I am here to stay, I tip my visor to all the ladies of stunting who have done the same. It’s not an easy game, so you can bet the girls hitting the spot seriously have the grit, determination and 64 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

passion to make it in a maledominated sport.

Europe’s stunt spots, I would love to introduce you to them now.

I had the pleasure of meeting all the female riders in America and hitting the XDL series with them in the Sartso Women’s Cup in 2010. This year I hopped a plane and met up with all the female riders on the European continent. For those of you who don’t know the women of

Isa: Isa has been stunting longer than most men I know, making her the first female rider in France. I met her at the Stunt Games competition in Bordeaux, France where she was competing. With a non-stop smile, regardless if she’s watching her blond-locked toddler stunt his three wheeler

or stunting her F4I in front of the crowds, she’s a 90lb female stunt legend in the French stunt scene. Sarah: I met Sarah at the same event, perhaps a teenage version of Isa, she is polite with a shy smile. But when she gets on her stunt bike and rips some straightline combos and cuts in some amazing circles - she’s anything but timid! Charlene: Another French rider who can normally be seen flying down the stunt spot, blond hair flying out from under her MX helmet. She’s doing shows and spreading the good word that ladies rock wheelies too. Camille: Camille is a pretty new rider, but has quite possibly the best teacher, her boyfriend, Jorian. Since I moved to France in February I’ve seen her learn idle wheelies all the way up to cutting in some mean sitdown circles. Rebecca: Another young, energetic rider from the South of France. Rebecca has been hitting the lot on her dirtbike all year, working on circle combo’s, stalling and other impressively technical tricks. We have had some girl-only stunt sessions, which was a first for me! Chesca: Being the lone female rider in the UK, Chesca has been learning solo for the last year. I had the pleasure of doing a TV gig with her and TT Racer Marie Costello. I have to admit hanging out with two female riders at the same

time is nothing less than a dream for someone who is surrounded by men 98% of the time. We had the back strip of an old airbase all to ourselves to stunt up for a few days, what more could a girl ask for? Mai-Lin and Ewa: Meeting my fellow ladies of ICON was definitely one of this summer’s highlights. Ewa is the type of girl you can feel like an instant friend with. She invited us into her home for two weeks and showed us all around Poland. Mai-Lin was equally inspirational, a true professional rider and independent woman. Establishing and growing her own business in the motorcycle industry is quite the achievement, especially at her young age.

when we went stunting by. I’m lucky to travel so much and meet all these amazing women... but to lady riders who don’t get to enjoy the company of other female riders often, it’s easy to feel alone. I think successfully riding motorcycles in any capacity is a two fold accomplishment for a woman. The technical accomplishment of piloting a powerful machine and the social accomplishment

All three of us ICON girls got to ride a bit together at the German Stunt Days. Being three blonde girls in ICON gear, it’s possible we were hard to tell apart, but we undoubtedly put a smile on everyone’s faces SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 65

MOTO TECH Words: Mark Rozemo Image: Courtesy of Motion Pro

The Importance of Proper Tire Pressure S

econd only to properly functioning brakes is the importance of proper air pressure in your tires. Proper tire pressure is vital for the handling and safety of a motorcycle. Improper tire inflation is a leading cause of motorcycle crashes and tire failure. A tire that is over inflated will have a reduced contact patch not only reducing the amount of available grip but also reducing the amount of heat the tire generates through friction. The proper combination of contact patch and heat is what generates the high levels of performance in modern sport bike tires. A tire that is over inflated will also induce a harsh, bumpy ride. A tire that is under inflated is equally as dangerous. The underinflated tire will generate excessive amounts of heat causing the rubber to become “greasy and even possibly delaminate from the carcass. Even a tire that is slightly under optimum pressure will show signs of reduced grip, poor tire wear, heavy steering feel, poor fuel economy and reduced braking capacity. It is important to check your tire pressure before each

78 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

ride. Even if you do not have any leaks, changes in temperature can affect tire pressure as much as 1.5 lbs for every ten degrees. It is important to consult your owner’s manual or tire manufacturer for the proper recommended pressure for your motorcycle and type of riding. Street pressures on street tires vary dramatically from race/ trackday pressures on high performance tires. In the racing world the difference one or two pounds of air makes is sometimes the difference between winning and not even making the podium.

Not only do we monitor tire pressure but also tire temperature, track temperature and ambient temperature to make sure we keep the tire in the perfect operating range for maximum grip and stability. Take that extra minute before you ride next time and properly set you tire pressures. It could mean the difference between an enjoyable ride or a bad day. Always remember your tire pressure is as important as your brakes, suspension and ability!

The Shifting of weight

82 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

R

iding a motorcycle at its limit is simultaneously one of the most enjoyable and most challenging things I have done in my life. As one who always needs to feel that I am heading towards a goal, making progress, or learning, I always thought that I would move on to another sport as soon as I felt I had mastered the art of road racing

and stopped making gains in my riding. Twenty two years and tens of thousands of laps later, the end is still nowhere in sight. One of the beauties of our sport is that there are so many little details that can make a tangible difference in your riding. Every time you seem to have mastered one another challenge quickly appears.

The topic of this month’s article involves one of those little details that serve as a stepping stone to bigger things... the timing of your weight shifts on the motorcycle as you enter a corner. As riders approach the turn point of a given corner, it is extremely important that the motorcycle has stable suspension geometry so that the rider can complete the

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 83

improve your skills: The shifting of weight turn in the least amount of time. The longer it takes the motorcycle to roll from upright to full lean, the shorter the straightaways that both precede and follow the corner become. It is obvious to any experienced rider that a motorcycle that with forks that are actively moving up and down cannot be turned quickly. In order to turn the bike as quickly as possible, riders must be able to predict precisely how much force in the handlebars the bike can handle without losing traction. The main problems that are caused when the forks are moving are that neither the leverage of the bar inputs (trail) or the amount of available front traction are predictable. In simple terms, trail is the length of the lever that the motorcycle

84 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

has to act on the front contact patch of the tire. Think of it as the rudder of a boat‌.a long rudder can turn a boat quickly but requires a lot of force to move, and a short rudder has less leverage to turn and offers much less resistance as a result of not moving as much water. As the forks move up or down in their travel the trail increases and decreases accordingly. What does this mean to you? The amount of force that it takes to turn a motorcycle through a turn when the forks are deep in the stroke (during heavy braking or cornering load) will not be sufficient if the forks are mid stroke or topped out in the same turn. Another way to imagine this would be if you envisioned your handlebars getting longer and shorter as the forks went up and down. If the bars are not

a constant length, how can you know how hard to push on them for a given corner? At the same time that your trail is changing as the forks move, the amount of weight pushing the tire into the ground is also in flux. Front traction is directly proportional to the amount of weight pushing the tire down into the ground. This becomes perfectly clear when we consider that a bike that wheelies has no front grip. As a result, a motorcycle that has suspension components in motion not only has varying handlebar leverage but also unpredictable front traction. The importance of stability during the entrance is one of the primary reasons that riders are taught to apply the brake

lever smoothly. Even in the most extreme racing conditions, riders must allow the weight to transfer to the front tire and the suspension to settle before applying full brake pressure. This concept of setting the brake is taught by most every track school in the nation. Once riders master the art of brake application, the next

lesson is properly timing their weight transfer in an effort keep the bike as stable as possible on the entrance. I have often observed students on track who have done an excellent job braking and are following a perfect line only have the whole corner fall apart when they shift

their weight to the inside of the motorcycle right before the turn point. Since most rider weights are nearly 40-50% of the weight of the motorcycle, these weight shifts often have a large impact on the suspension. The average brake zone only lasts a couple seconds, leaving any problems that upset the chassis a very short SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 85

improve your skills: The shifting of weight window to work themselves out before we have to turn. The simplest way to avoid the problems caused by late body weight transfer is to get the biggest part of the job done before the corner. Human anatomy has made it such that riders must nearly completely unweight the seat in order to shift to the inside of the motorcycle. The solution preferred by a majority of top riders is to perform this shift before they even pull the brake lever. This does not involve hanging off the motorcycle; in fact riders do quite the opposite when accelerating down a long straight. However, they do generally have one butt cheek off the seat (essentially touching the inside edge) well before the turn or braking has begun. For corners that follow slow to medium length straights, the aerodynamic advantages of moving into a full tuck are small enough that most riders never

86 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

bother with the extra effort to come back to the center of the seat. For instance, in a scenario where a rider exits a left corner onto a medium length front straight that is followed by a left hand turn one, riders should simply stay on the left side of the bike as the bike stands up. During the acceleration late off the corner, riders can use the forces that are standing the bike up to allow their body to smoothly move towards the center until their left butt cheek makes contact with the seat. From this position, they can simply tuck in down the straight with their upper body centered and their lower body slightly offset to the left. From this position riders can simply put their knee out and slide to the inside when it is time to turn, avoiding any weight shift during the entrance. When a straightaway connects left had and right hand corners there is simply one addition step to the process. Riders will

simply transfer from one side to the other part way down the straight. At the Penguin School, we usually term this is as “after all the excitement is over from the exit. For tracks with high speed straights that require riders to get into a full tuck (a subject of a future article), the solution is generally to perform the weight shift 1-2 seconds before the throttle shut off point. This allows the bike to completely settle before and braking or turning begins and places the rider in a perfect position to make the turn. Setting up before the turn is one of those small details that helps with confidence. With a stable motorcycle underneath them, riders can focus on pushing brake markers forward, carrying more roll speed and turning with greater precision.....the things that really help the lap times drop. Until next time - ride fast, ride safe!

FRICTION ZONE: Jesse rooke

J

esse Rooke has been one of the industry’s most unique custom builders since his first creation came to life in 2002. His history with racing of all sorts drives him to embrace a simple approach to design, and life. Jesse’s bikes are individuals in their own right, most given a name like Dinah, Scarlett, Maddie or Kaylee Ann. He attributes the names to very personal reasons, and each build is just as important as the last. When starting the design process, Jesse will not touch a single tool until he can see the end result. Without that divine vision, the project will sit untouched. He also vows to never give in to the pressure of keeping up with the Joneses. Jesse very boldly states, “I’ll never do something that I don’t want to do.” A simple, yet astounding mantra in today’s cut-throat society that exalts a ”whatever it takes” attitude. Jesse truly is what we would call a diamond in the rough. When the show Mania 2 first aired on the Discovery Channel, Jesse found himself inspired by Jesse James, but wasn’t interested in buying one of those bikes. He wanted to build one of his own. Thus, Dinah was born. His first bike went on to an undefeated show record, setting quite a standard for his future work. Since then, he has continued to test the boundaries of his own creative capacity and the limits of building a beautiful and still 90 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

fully functional motorcycle. One of the challenges he faces today is building specifically for female needs. For women, Jesse says, “Nothing is available right now.” His current project aims to blow the issue out of the water. Who is the special lady who will be the first to receive a bike that could very well change the game? Alecia Beth Moore, or better known as mega popstar, mother, and wife to worldfamous rider Carey Hart: Pink. Jesse has done several builds for Hart, who is one of the most well-known and recognized motorcycle icons of today. “Alecia also is a very dedicated and safe rider. They ride all the time,” said Jesse of his newest client. Needless to say this task is a first that is worthy of Rooke’s magic touch. On camera, Jesse is soft spoken and comes across as a very laid back individual. This could be a result of his single status, but we think it might stem from his new location. Although he was born in Arizona, he now lives and works in California, and the surfer lifestyle seems to have worn off on him considerably. When asked about his cool demeanor, Jesse said halfseriously, “I’m soft until… problems arise, then so can my voice.” His calm disposition is a typical of someone who is interested in anything with a motor that can be used competitively. We would SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 91

FRICTION ZONE: Jesse rooke

normally expect a loud and highenergy individual. Then again, Jesse has never been one to stay within the lines or do that which is expected. Rooke attributes his source of inspiration to racing, music, and great accomplishments of any sort. In 2011, a national tour allowed Jesse to launch several new bikes. Info and photos of the 92 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

builds will be available on his website soon. Jesse also has a build being released this coming winter that he claims is his favorite project to date. Hungry for details, we asked Jesse to spill the beans, but all he would say about it was, “Been working on it for quite some time.” Such a tease. The scrambler is Jesse’s most

popular model, and was even turned into a limited production bike in 2010. Jesse offered up 100 of these sleek and sexy beasts, each with a custom paint job and numbered tank. It was seen as an affordable way for riders to own an amazing bike that was unique to them, a custom build without a custom build price. The project was so well received that he still offers

the scrambler as a oneoff custom build, and will be tackling another limited production bike project in 2012. Rooke Customs will also be offering a product line in 2012. Seems like Jesse is heading forward at full speed and has no intentions of slowing down. We can thank the motorcycle gods for that.

What I really would like for Xmas is a factory backed Sponsored ride for the 2012 race season. I have proven myself over the years as an independent rider to be one of the baddest on two wheels and that I can win and bring the spotlight to a platform and make it perform. A 4mm piston motor with a 4mm billet crank shaft, a monster cylinder head, big cams and titanium rods for a spare motor for our Real Street GSXR 1000. The 2011 race season we have proved that a small block 2mm motor could run with the big bores with a 4mm. I would really shock the game as a rider and a tuner! A bigger trailer to hold more bikes. My preference would be an aluminum one because of the light weight to pull. I'm a rider that runs a lot of classes in competition so it’s not rare to see me riding different bikes in each class.

A GoPro or Contour Helmet Camera would be next on my list. I would love to give the public a front seat view on how to move first on your opponent all the time, the rush of going fast, fighting power wheelies, clutch and throttle control, hitting shift points, spraying NOS and stopping at over 180mph all in less than 8seconds! Two sets of carbon fiber BST Wheels for my GSXR 1000’s. That would be a great addition in weight and performance to mount my sticky Pirelli tires! New Custom Leather Suits for testing and competition. I like to stay fly, be different and set trends. I peeped a few guys “Swagga Jacking!” My next level with it will really change the suit game. An unlimited gas card! I don't have to explain this one. The travel cost is the biggest expense in racing! A

new R.V would be nice to go with it. A new sportbike and cruiser so I can make the sportbike into a Dragracing Machine and a cruiser for me and the wife to take nice rides outside the city on nice days. But last and not least I really would like for everyone to help the unfortunate people and children this holiday season. By doing what we can to help others in need. My family and I will be sending a kid named Albert a gift pack. I met him at the racetrack in Maryland this year an he suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. I would like to wish my fellow racers and SBI family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! God bless from the Dickerson Family! Ashon Capo Dickerson Drag Racing Editor

FRICTION ZONE Dear Santa... I wish it was that easy. I have a never ending wish list when it comes to motorcycles and motorcycle products. From safety gear to actual bikes to helmet cams. Trying to narrow it down is difficult. Shoei Hornet DS Helmet: Perfect for Supermoto and some endurance 150 racing. JonesCam Ion HD Advantage Camera: Smaller and more versitale with the same HD quality as a GoPro, the choice is easy! Sun Rims with Buchanan Spokes supermoto package: Perfect upgrade for your CRF150 "play bike" Snap-On Work Station: Because what mechanic would not love this! Ohlins Suspension: Because it's the best upgrade you can do for a track bike Thomas Campion Technical Advisor

98 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

My first wish would be a GoPro Digital Camera for all of my photo and video needs. GoPro has been a leader in action sports onboard cameras since the industries beginning and gives users a top of the line experience. My second wish would be a personal motocross track in my backyard. Motocross is a tremendous training platform for roadracing among other motorsports and is often one of the best ways to get into shape. My third wish would be a Kawasaki edition Traxxas R/C Truck. They are ridiculously fun and can be used on various terrains or around the house and you can support the Kawasaki brand. Fourthly, I would like a nice brand new pair of Oakley Valentino Rossi Signature Series Holbrook Sunglasses. Though it doesn’t directly have to do with motorsports aside for being a signature series of one of the world’s greatest roadracers, looking good after you get off your bike or walk around the pits at your local track is a definite positive. Last but not least, I would be very happy to find some home roasted Handlebar Coffee from Santa Barbara under my tree. It is some of the best coffee I have ever had. I was fortunate to try it while with Ben Bostrom. Corey Alexander Contributor

FRICTION ZONE The MV Agusta F3. What a beauty! When I think of MV Agusta I think of Giacomo Agostini dominating racing on a 3 cylinder MV Agusta Grand Prix bike back in the day. The same family is bringing the another sweet, sexy, lightweight model to the mix. Sitting here in 36 degree weather, I can hear the wailing exhaust. Yeah, I like her... a lot! What better to wear when riding your new MV Agusta F3 then this very swanky AGV Agostini Replica Helmet. Ago is the most winning Grand Prix racer of all times with122 wins and yes, 15 Grand Prix World Championships! Wear what the winner wears. Kevin Schwantz School. If you're going to learn, learn from the best! Yes it's great to do a riding school and pick up some tips from a local ace or maybe an AMA pro but what could be better than learning from a Grand Prix racing Legend! Watch the movie "Faster" to see what Schwantz is about. Kevin currently also advises both AMA and Grand Prix riders alike so I am sure he could teach a hack like me a trick or two. Need a hot looking t shirt esp if your rocking a Gixxer? The legendary Texas gunslinger himself rocking out a Suzuki. The movie "Fastest". Just check out the trailer for the movie! Absolutely fantastic! Just the fix for a cold winter night. Michael Lawless Contributor

The first item on my list would have to be a 10x20 canopy with all of my sponsors logos on it. Not only to use for shade at the race track but to also recognize all of my wonderful sponsors that I am thankful to have. Number two on my wish list would have to be a custom painted hot pink, black, and turquoise craftsman tool box to put all my tools in. I am a “girly girly” and “tomboy” all in one. So I think that would fit me well. Third would have to be Vortex levers for my bike. They work very well when it comes time for me to slip the clutch when I race. They also have easy accessible adjusters for the brake and clutch levers. Number four on my wish list is to learn how to drift my motorcycle. I think motorcycle drifting is so amazing! It looks a little tough to learn but I know with practice, hard work, and dedication I will be able to do it. I look forward to learning. Now for my fifth and final item on my Holiday wish list would have to be the new 2012 BMW S100RR, MIROCK Series Pro Street ready in the new Blue Fire color! Don't get me wrong I love my 2010 S1000RR that I race in the MIROCK Crazy 8s Class but there is nothing wrong with wanting something new and improved. I would love to wake up to see all of these under my tree. Dystany Spurlock Contributor

FRICTION ZONE As I sat down to put together my motorcycling Christmas list, I realized that I'm a pretty lucky guy. Making my living racing, teaching and building parts in the motorcycle industry has given me the opportunity to use some pretty trick stuff, see some awesome places and meet some truly special people. Since "Santa Allan" gave us carte' blanche to ask for anything we want, I'm going out on a limb with a few of these without getting too crazy... or maybe not. Let's start out big. Let's go with a Ducati 1199 Panigale in Factory Corse race trim. I've had to opportunity to race all kinds of Ducatis, from the old air cooled F1's to my current 848 Evo, and have enjoyed the unique character of each one. This is the first complete redesign that has happened since the 851. Of course there have been numerous refinements and improvements over the years, but the new bike is truly starting from a completely clean slate and the thing I'm hearing from test riders are very encouraging. As long as we're starting big, let's keep it going. I'm thinking weekend track experience at Philip Island, Australia. In speaking with several friends who have raced around the world, this track keeps coming up and one of those "can't miss" venues. The elevation changes, the views, the GP history... if there is a place in the world where I would like to ride, this is it! For the shop at home, a Grazia hydraulic motorcycle lift. I've never been a huge fan of the air lifts that most shops use, and just can't bring myself to buy the Chinese stuff at Harbor Freight. My brother has had one of these pump lifts for about 15 years, and it works perfectly every time. New fog free motocross goggles. Winter riding is already here, and I've got an old pair that have had one too many muddy fingers wiping the lens clean... I'm thinking that the new Scott Tyrant goggles would be nice. For my last wish, I'm going back to fishing in the fantasy well, but here goes: Let's have a 2012 Moto GP season with close, multi-rider battles all season long that result in the end with an American champion. There were some good battles last year, but there were also some parades. Here's to hoping that an extra 200 cc's shake things up a bit for next season! Eric Wood Riding Editor

this life: 2011... Done! Words: Tyson Beckford Images: Leon Brittain

T

he year has come down to the last few weeks and I feel it was a great and a sad year for all. We lost riders and gained some new ones which is part of nature and the law of the world. One rider we lost this past year was Marco Simoncelli. The loss was felt around the world. That shocker was felt in my heart. My mind told me, here is this racer who died doing what he loved and at the highest level of motorcycle racing... to me that’s the way to go. He will greatly be missed. My summer was great. I rode and did almost everything that I planned to do except get my track days in... but there is always next summer. I reflect on the year and see that I have a lot to be thankful for so my Christmas list is pretty short. I just want a Ducati Streetfighter if Santa Claus is reading this. I was a good boy this year! On a serious note, everyday that we can wake up and ride is a blessing in itself. So when you think back on 2011, don’t think about the economy or these fucked up politicians. Think about how much fun you had riding with your friends girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband, whomever you fancy riding with. Look forward to another year of good safe riding and be thankful for the freedoms we have here. Think about all that road that needs your attention in the coming year.

staff stuff Barnett Performance • Clutch components Ashon Capo Dickerson I personally use these clutches in all my race bikes and have recorded a personal best Mph and Elapse time using them with my Motul Oil. In my medium Horsepower applications they last and hold up pretty long. In my high horsepower applications they don’t hold up as long. All in all, a great product that has helped put me in the winners circle and win one round at a time.Lighter the OEM and a great replacement for the Hardcore Racer or just a Weekend Warrior at a reasonable price. http://barnettclutches.com Rating: 5 (out of 6)

TeKNIC • 4 Link Spine Protector Leon Brittain Purchased more than five years ago, my Teknic 4 link spine protector is in just as good of shape as the day I purchased. Not necessarily because it’s stood the test of time throughout harsh conditions, but because I never use it. Why? I’ve found this particular piece of equipment to be more cumbersome than it’s worth. Well, maybe not more so than it’s worth because it does provide an extra level of protection for my oh so important spine. But, all of my riding jackets are equipped with back protection and fit snug, as they should. So wearing this piece of equipment under my jacket(s) just doesn’t work. This spine protector is better suited for those jackets without any protection at all. Just be forewarned, the Velcro adjustable straps that secure around your waist will have you feeling like you’re wearing a girdle making for an uncomfortable ride. http://teknicgear.com Rating: 2.5 (out of 6)
