or me, nothing is worse than late Fall turning into Winter. It gets dark at 4 pm. You move slower than a postal worker about to retire. You come home, eat, watch a little TV, brush your teeth, stumble into bed, look at the clock and it's 7:30! Yeah, Winter blows! And if you thrive on the sounds of motorcycle racing like I do, specifically MotoGP, it is a slow steady death... until testing in January! What do you do to pass the time? Take a lot of naps hoping you can Rip Van Winkle it and voila! It's testing time in Sepang! Well have no fear, the B.T. MotoGP Awards are here to get you outta' your "GP blues" with some well deserved, lighthearted awards that only B.T. can offer. The only thing missing is the hot presenters, but you have me and that's about as good as you're going to get for now. Besides, who doesn't love an Awards Show. So without further ado, I present to you the BT MotoGP Awards! The 2017 MotoGP season was beyond crazy. The Champion, Marc Marquez had 3 DNF's and still claimed the championship. It was a year of fresh faces that showed no respect to their elders and it was a year that saw the literal rise of a champion and how he proved that believing in yourself is oh so important to achieving victory.

THE "MR. HUSTLE" AWARD: DYLAN GRAY
30 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
Ask yourself, how did you get to know these GP stories, or how did you know what tires which racer would be racing and what that tire would do during the course of a race. You and I both were privy to this information because of one man and why he gets the "Mr. Hustle" Award. Dylan Gray can tell you what does what on a bike almost better than any mechanic in the paddock. And he does it in a way as not to make you feel stupid but informed, which is no small feat. If Dylan said a tire would start to fade around lap seven, then bet the house that tire would fade around lap seven. That guy had a better winning percentage than the bookies in Vegas. His knowledge and easy going ways will surely be missed around the paddock as he pursues other avenues but his expertise will forever be etched in my brain as I'm wondering "Did Marquez choose the softs or the medium!

The "Mr. Badass" Award: This goes to the rider and bike that look the most bad ass. From livery to leather! This award goes to Pol Esparago, for the umpteenth time. If Brad Pitt rode MotoGP, he'd be Pol Esparago. Great boyish smile, perfect racers body, not too muscular like Cal Crutchlow but not too tiny like Dani Pedrosa, just Racer Perfect! And coupled with that KTM Livery? If ever there was someone who looked like a rock star on the grid, it'd be Pol Esparago!

THE "ROOKIE OF THE YEAR" AWARD: JOHANN ZARCO
34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
The "Rookie of The Year" Award: This one was easy. The Flying Frenchman, Johann Zarco finished the championships in sixth place and managed to piss off everyone except Marquez, in the process with his "take no prisoners" style of riding. Watch out for Zarco in 2018 because the rest of the MotoGP field will.

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.
The "Funniest Rider" Award: This one was tougher than you would think. Off the bat, you'd think the winner would be Crutchlow or Rossi but with each press conference, it became apparent that the comedian of the paddock was none other than Danilo Petrucci! His answers to every question were honest and funny and had every rider and reporter chuckling. Petrucci is not only a great rider but a good comedian and, laughter is always cherished in sports where the environment can be stuffier than a Republican fundraiser in Utah.

The "Wildest Ride" Award: Hands down, this goes to Jack Miller during FP4 at LeMans. Because, as the commentators said, he was a very lucky, lucky boy! Click HERE to see the clip.

The "Save of The Year" Award: If I were to mention Marc Marquez's saves, most of you would say, "Which one?" Actually, Loris Baz held that title with an unbelievable save in Austin, TX. That is, until Sepang, when Marquez had a save that looked as if his hip bone would pop out of the socket. Click HERE to watch the clip and you'll be watching like a horror movie teenager who's just put an ax through Jason Vorhees' hockey mask and he just keeps coming. You'll find yourself saying, "No way!" and other colorful adjectives. Marquez has more saves than Dominik Hasek and still continues to amaze! SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 41

The "Race of The Year" Award: This one was easy. Phillip Island. Six riders, literally banging and bashing each other for roughly 45 minutes. This wasn't a race. It was a street fight between the best riders in the world and we, the Fans were the beneficiaries!

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.
The "My Man" or "Teammate of The Year" Award: Not only is he funny, but Danilo Petrucci is truly a company man. Admitting to anyone who would listen that he would indeed help Dovizioso as much as he could to win the title. The clincher is... he's not really Dovizioso's teammate. They both ride Ducati's but, that's about it and the fact that he would help a fellow "Duc" rider says all you need to know about Petrucci.

The "WTF Moment" Award: This goes to Jack Miller, whose nickname on his pit board is "Jackass". In Catalyuna he lived up to it. The track was reconfigured but apparently, no one told Miller and he repeatedly rode the old course, much to the amusement to Marc Marquez and pretty much everyone in attendance during an otherwise uneventful FP1.

THE "I'M HERE" OR "MOST IMPROVED" AWARD: ANDREAS DOVIZIOSO
The "I'm Here" or "Most Improved" Award: Another easy one. Andreas Dovizioso. Having had only one previous victory in the Premier Class, Desmo Dovi found his footing during the 2017 campaign and gained more confidence race after race, racking up six victories and a final race showdown with Marc Marquez for the championship. Dovi was like that kid who left high school for the Summer after his junior year a virgin and then came back his senior year, gained ten pounds of muscle, became a starter on the football team and who wasn't a virgin anymore. Confidence does wonders and with Dovi, it almost got him a championship!

The "Supernova" or "Rider to Watch for in 2018" Award: This one is split between Maverick Vinales and Alex Rins. Both riders have what it takes to win a championship with Vinales having the slight edge. The only thing stopping both is confidence with the bike, although Vinales holds a slight edge with a Moto3 Championship in 2013.

The "Tha Man" Award: This one speaks for itself. This goes to the Champ, Marc Marquez. 2017 was not easy for Marquez. 3 DNF's, 27 crashes and he was outdueled by Desmo Dovi twice but still, the Baby Faced Assassin found a way to get it done. Thus, he is the Man!

I fell in love with MotoGP in 2006 and Nick Harris will always be apart of that memory. His voice echoes his enthusiasm for the sport and like osmosis, you feel the same way. Harris was funny, insightful, loved and gave all the credit to the riders. Nick was great to us, the listeners, for that simple reason alone. He was selfless, always deflecting to his counterparts for a job well done. This time I'll do it for him. Nick Harris, you were great and it will be with great remittance that we see you go. For me, MotoGP will always be about racing and listening to Nick Harris. Godspeed, Nick and thanks for the memories. I hope you enjoyed these awards as much as I did. Good luck with your Winter Blues. It's only a few months before Qatar. Until then, get to know your family again, do some Winter repairs on the house, do whatever needs to be done... Because it's going to be race season before long. And then... Well, you know! Merry Christmas everybody!

is not concerned with being relevant. His focus rests on remaining innovative. Relevancy seems to be a byproduct of innovation and by the looks of his social media feed, Sliger is at the forefront of the ever changing freestyle stunt riding scene. His perspective on all things stunt related offers sincere insight into how he has earned the respect of his peers and why he is where he is. Not all riders are created alike. There is a difference. In his own words, Kyle Sliger explains‌
SBI: What was it like for you coming up in the stunt scene? KS: Coming up in the stunt scene has been a tough road to go down. But it all started just having fun riding with friends just trying to outdo each other 74 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and amp each other up in the process. We all know friends get into sports and get out of them so after a few years go by and I find myself riding alone in a small local bike shop parking lot every day. I would spend a lot of my time watching videos of the guys I looked up to and it inspired me to push a little harder each time I would ride. Mostly XDL videos which got me more involved with competitions. Along the way, I wanted to learn editing programs to make my own videos and that's when I really started having fun with stunt riding.
I HAVE CREATED MY OWN SIGNATURE ST YLE. I ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE S U R E I WA S N ' T LOOKING LIKE OR COPYING ANYONE ELSE. I WANTED TO STAY UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT.
SBI: What are your thoughts on the current state of the stunt scene? KS: It’s on its way up and not down. I still see people and businesses all over getting more involved with stunt riding. Which is good. I would like to see it get more mainstream since I do believe the ones who push themselves and compete and take it seriously are true athletes like any other sport out there and deserve a shot in the spotlight to show the world what we can do. Hopefully one day it comes to that. We dream of it being in the X Games and we get asked that all the time, “Why isn't it in the X Games?” And we really don't have an answer for it.
SBI: Who inspires you? KS. My favorite stunt rider to watch as I was getting into stunt riding was Nick Apex. I always liked SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 77

I have the Stunt Series Convertibars because they never break and they are fully adjustable so you can't go wrong. I run Shinko Tires Verge for the rear and Verge 2x for the front. SBI: Talk about your relationship with ICON. When did that begin and how did it develop over the years? KS: ICON is an amazing company and brand. I couldn't be more thankful to be apart of the team. It was all pretty crazy to me when it happened I actually sent them a resume thinking to myself, “Yea, right.” And even forgot about it because I would never have guessed they would ever respond to me. But they did and I was blown away. That was back in 2011 when I sent that. I first told myself dreams do come true. Now I just needed to prove myself so that's what I did. I went out and pushed myself even harder knowing that now I have some support and it's comforting knowing that my blood sweat and tears were finally going to start paying off. Still, to this day I can't believe I'm a part of ICON. They are always pushing new products and looking out for stunt riders. ICON has helped stunt riding in many ways so It makes me feel good to represent a company who is down with stunt riding. Now ICON is working more with me on some videos and shoots. So stay tuned to see some more of me in the catalogs and new upcoming videos. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 89

Of course, women can do what men can do and vice versa, but a lot of women feel as if it’s harder for them. F
or many motorcyclists, the winter season is a time when, like it or not, we take a break from our riding activities and spend time participating in winter sports, training and planning for next season. While I wholeheartedly encourage any kind of track riding, it is unfortunate that many riders settle in at a home track, usually, the one closest to home, and spend nearly all of their time there. I believe that everyone should have a “home track and there is nothing wrong with doing a majority of your events there every season. However, the benefits of venturing out to visit a couple new places every year are great and even span beyond the realm of motorcycling.
season, often riding 3 to 4 different motorcycles at these events. The challenges never stopped coming!
Conversely, when I stopped racing as a full time professional and started riding almost exclusively at my home track I found myself slipping into a routine as I rode. Instead of constantly dissecting and evaluating every corner for improvement, I lulled myself into a sense of ease and control and my lap times and development as a rider halted for almost two years. Then, a wonderful thing happened! New Jersey Motorsports Park opened nearby and I went with a bunch of local riders to check it out. We all had a great time, but it was when I came home that I found One of the beauties of our sport is the endless cycle the biggest surprise. The next event at my home track of improvement. The fact that in my 28th season of I not only had more fun than I had in a long time but racing I am still developing new skills and learning I also lowered my best lap time, after being stuck for new things is a major reason that I am planning season 2.5 years. 29 right now. When I was racing professionally I would typically visit 12 to 15 different tracks every Riding a new racetrack at your personal limit is hard, 118 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
but it’s the hard that makes it great. Numerous scientific studies show that discomfort is the primary catalyst for growth. As a sport that combines precise techniques with fear management and concrete measurements for success, lap times and race finishes, there is plenty of opportunity for fear and failure. Riding other racetracks, especially one that is completely new to you, puts you at a significant disadvantage to those riders who consider that course to be their “home” track. The fear of making mistakes, riding slower than other riders and even losing a race can create significant discomfort. Motorcycle riders often exhibit the grit needed to overcome these challenges. There is some wellknown research performed by West Point Academy that notes that people with a personal goal that says “I want to improve myself” outperforms one of “I want to impress others” on a consistent basis. The willingness to fail and then persevere has shown to be a leading indicator of success not only in sports but life in general. The willingness to persevere through adversity is a greater predictor of success than athletic ability, IQ, social circumstances or nearly any other factor and it is one that I see in many of my friends at the track. I think that this like-mindedness is why when you look around at a racetrack you find people from incredibly diverse backgrounds who bond together
and become lifelong friends. An interesting side note is that scientists have also learned that when you are put in unfamiliar situations a unique part of your brain is triggered that releases dopamine (nature’s “happy” chemical). The crazy part here is that this only happens when you see or experience completely new things. Your body also creates new neural pathways that fuel creativity and help improve your memory! On a more basic level, going to a new track forces you to focus on the process of riding the motorcycle. Instead of riding around at home and focusing on the “where” and “when” you want to perform key actions like brake, turn and accelerate, new tracks stimulate the “why” and “how” questions essential to truly riding fast and improving your craft. Because you do not have a set routine, you question your entrance trajectory, your apex and your turn rate in every corner. You work on adjusting your body position and body timing to help create traction and stability. You are forced to make best guesses for brake markers and then to constantly revisit them to see if they are correct. In short, you focus on the most important aspects of your riding... The ones that you should be thinking about every time you ride, especially at home.
SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 119
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: YOUR HORIZONS
As someone who is now in “learning mode”, you also actively seek out advice and collaborate with your fellow riders. At new tracks, riders are constantly looking for good ideas and new reference marks to make laps more consistent. As times get faster, the focus is on the details that help create traction where it is needed most and then on altering braking and throttle application to take advantage of that newfound grip. The new environment exposes you to both new riders with unique riding styles and different coaches with new ways of describing how to solve your challenges. The improvement is consistent, measurable and satisfying.
keenly on these areas, and in applying my NJMP techniques at home I dropped almost half a second. For a 20 year veteran riding at his home track that’s a massive improvement, and it was a ton of fun!
