FROM THE EDITOR
CHANGES AND BEGININGS Things are very different now from when I started SportBikes Inc Magazine back in 2010. Trends have come and gone. Some have circled back for another rotation. When I started the magazine, I made the strategic decision to be a digital-only publication. I understood how data was being delivered and how it was being processed. At the time, I saw the curve and slightly what was around the bend. Change is good.
magazines were on the shelf? There’s only a handful, if a handful at all. Closing out this month, this year, this decade... Moving forward into our 10th anniversary year, SBI is very happy and excited to still be here, still growing and still rising. Happy holidays to you all. We will see you in 2020, what will be our best year yet.

INDUSTRY NEWS TRIUMPH UNLEASHES THEIR NEW TIGERS
Triumph Motorcycles introduced the next step in the evolution of their flagship adventure/ touring bike, the Tiger. Originally introduced in 2010, the Triumph Tiger 800 quickly etched a prominent position in its class. The new 2020 Triumph Tiger takes a significant leap forward with an all-new 900cc, in-line three-cylinder engine, a new trellis frame and a bevy of bells and whistles. Here are a few things you should know about Triumph’s new Tiger 900... THE NAME The Triumph 900 is available in three platforms, the 900, the 900 GT/GT PRO and the 900 RALLY/RALLY PRO. The new nomenclature replaces the 800 series models: the 800 XR, the 800 XRx, 800 XRt, 800 XRx Low, 800 XCx, 800 XCa. The 900 serves as a base model while the 900 GT and GT PRO ticks it up a notch in the performance department for touring and adventure riding. The RALLY and RALLY PRO are designed for the racer with optimization for serious off-road riding. THE ENGINE The new 900cc inline three-cylinder engine features a 1,3 and 2 firing sequence for a boost in mid-range engine response, and a ten percent increase in torque output, compared to the 800 models. THE FRAME The Tiger 900 features a new trellis frame with a bolt-on subframe and pillion hangers. The trellis frame shaves weight off the entire bike 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2019
(11 pounds compared to the 800) while the bolt-on subframe maximizes the durability of the overall structure. With previous models, if there was an impact to the rear of the bike, the entire frame could be considered damaged. With the bolt-on subframe, the same damage is remedied by replacing the rear section, a feature most appealing to racers and offroaders. THE BRAKES Across the platform, the Tiger 900 sports Brembo Stylema monobloc brakes. The Brembo Stylema brakes are lightweight and compact with a strategic design that reduces volume around the braking setup for greater
stopping power and increased airflow for cooler calipers. RIDING MODES The Tiger 900 includes 6 ride modes that optimize the bike’s output in a variety of riding conditions: Rain, Road, Sport, Rider, Off-Road and Off-Road Pro. RIDER ENGAGEMENT All but the base Tiger 900 come equipped with an impressively large 7 inch TFT screen. The base model’s screen measures only 5 inches. THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS WOOLIE AND DEUS COLLAB FOR "THE FRAMER" Inspired by the spirit of a flat tracker that was both capable of earning its keep on the dirt as well as being proficient as an everyday ride, custom bike builder Woolie, with an assist from designer, Jeff Cole, took a 2017 Yamaha FZ07, stripped it down and reconceptualized the bike with a performance-driven engine, slapped on a headlight, a license plate and turn signals... and christened it, The Framer. Equipped with a Factory Yamaha racing kit that included oversized pistons, spec-ported cylinder head, race valves, and an electronics package, The Framer is enhanced by a custom fuel tank and uniquely fabricated body parts that keep it true to its flat track aesthetics.
18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2019
The Framer rolls on a set of 19-inch Traction wheels from the house of Roland Sands, fixed with Mitas DOT tires while full floating quick-release Brembos take care of the stopping business on the front end. The back end of the braking business is comprised of a full floating stainless steel rotor with an M50 caliper. With a handcrafted Saddleman seat, the Framer is presented in a black candy paint job. “The bike resembles a “big brother version of the Honda CR500 Street Tracker built for Dani Pedrosa, where his was a Short Track racer, this is a proper mile bike with third gear wheelies all day” – Woolie.

THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA'S 2020 YZF-R1M
TO BE HONEST, when I took delivery of the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M, my initial thoughts were that the bike has no business on the streets. By the mere sum of all its parts, the bike is destined for closed course asphalt glory. At this level in the R1M's evolutionary process, the look shape and feel of the bike take a bit of a departure from the previous model years. It not only looks finished, but it also feels finished. Granted, Yamaha has 22 years developing the evolution of the YZF-R1, as the model made its debut in 1998. With the presentation of this 2020R1M model, there has been a considerable leap forward in the process. The amount of carbon fiber adorning the chassis alone is enough to lock your visual engagement. The front fender, upper cowl, side and tail fairings... all carbon fiber. It's quite beautiful, to say the least. Feeling the effects of the lighter 450 pounds (wet), while harnessing the power of the 998cc crossplane crankshaft engine in the cockpit makes everything all too real, for all the right reasons. Pairing an aluminum frame and fuel tank with a magnesium subframe and wheels means lighter weight while not skipping out on the desired and required strength. Overall, the bike feels slimmer and the new tank section allows for improved rider connectivity. The new bodywork highlights 24 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2019

the progressive styling and fluidity of the 2020 model when compared to the 2019 version. In 2015, the revamped R1 design caught some flack from the R1 purist community and a portion of the jurors from the court of public opinion. Flack aside, the new aesthetic was a departure from the established fashion of the R1, further giving it a unique presentation that was undeniably R1. The 2020's refinement of what began in 2015, puts a period on the progression. As said, it looks finished. It is the most attractive R1, since the bike's inception. The R1 has never suffered from lack of performance and over the years the platform has always been ready for a throwdown. The 2020's engine continues to improve its output. The inline fourcylinder, crossplane crankshaft engine is laced with titanium connecting rods, shortened intake ports, and repositioned 10 hole injectors that spray directly toward the intake valve (previously 12 holes, relocated from the bottom of the throttle bodies, now on top). The new engine also features new cylinder heads, as well as new profiles for both the rocker arms and camshafts. I noticed the R1M's proper full-color TFT dash interface when I took delivery at the Yamaha warehouse and started her up. There is a lot of data that fits on the screen and you'll easily pass 20 to 30 mins flipping through the menu, reviewing and adjusting settings. There are four riding modes, ten settings for traction control, four slide control settings, four lift or wheelie control settings, three settings for the quick shifter, two settings for the brake control and three settings for the engine brake management system. Catching my attention straight away was the acceleration and brake application meter, on the lower right corner. One small benefit of testing this bike on the street is that there are moments when you can look down at the dash and glance at what information or data is being presented to you. This would never happen on the track. The streets DECEMBER 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 27

of Southern California and stretch of the Pacific Coastal Highway were not enough to really push the R1M to any degree of pressure. But it sure was fun as hell. Perhaps, the feature that will receive the most praise is the entirely new cableless ride by wire Yamaha chip controlled throttle. It is exactly what it sounds like... The Accelerator Position with Sensor (ASPG) eliminates the need for throttle cables. It's not as simple as "twist and go", per se, but in the application for the rider, it is as "twist and go" as you can get. The ASPG operates as a magnetic sensor detects when the throttle is opened at the grip, then communicates with the throttle bodies. The result is consistent and a damn near effortless throttle response. You twist the throttle, she moves. The transaction is smooth and direct. At speed, quick-shifting through gears, there is a nuance of a different engagement with the throttle, but I chalked it up to memories and habits of riding with a standard cable throttle assembly. The application of ASPG for street riding is sheer enjoyment. But in a track environment, ASPG's potential is massive. Considering all of the 2020's new or revamped components and elements, I thought to myself as I began my ride, that I had no business taking this weapon out on a street cruise. It just did not seem practical. I thought for sure that its performance would be hindered by low gears and mostly midrange revs. Of course, I was hell-bent on finding some bits where I could let her stretch her legs and I was successful. But for the most part, I don't think that I got her out of third gear. Regardless, I quickly learned that I was wrong to discredit the potential pleasure that R1M would provide in the streets. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance output and above average, impressive level of comfort of the 2020 YZF-R1M while getting on with it around the streets of SoCal. THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA'S 2020 YZF-R1M the light... The non-biting, yet firm braking as I rolled to a stop at the intersections (the unified brake system from the prior model years is no longer)... This was an intimate engagement with the bike, that I often miss when on larger press outings. The opportunity to slow down and ascertain as much as I can from the product is overlooked and underrated. It was at the Bolsa Chica State Beach where I was slightly able to open her up, throw her into a few corners and give some consideration to the Ohlins ERS set up on what I will refer to an "access road." I was by no means moving at a pace to effectively apply pressure to the R1M's electronic front forks and rear shock but the components are proper race bits. The list of features that the R1M is composed of are plentiful, ranging from the effective application for the street to the competitive racer's edge. The R1M has a WIFI communication control unit (CCU) that, when used in connection with Yamaha's mobile phone applications (Y-TRAC and YRC Setting) allows you to make adjustments to several settings, in addition to tracking the bike's position via GPS and log data using the recorded information from the IMU, ECU, and GPS. The question of what is practical or where a bike, particularly a liter biker, should be ridden is all relative. The 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1M, while designed, and engineered for the track, is right at home in the streets, canyons, backroads, etc. After all, the R1M comes with turn signals, brake and LED headlights, not to mention mirrors. These DOT required components can quickly be removed so that the R1M can quickly be converted into its track appropriate persona, or alter ego. That seems pretty damn practical to me.

While the two pilots for the newly formed Team Hammer Suzuki have yet to be announced, a large question mark looms over the 2020 seats for the riders of the defunct Yoshimura Suzuki Team, Josh Herrin and Toni Elias. Herrin, a proven champion, and fan-favorite is arguably MotoAmerica's most vocal and visible asset, via social and direct media. Elias, also a former champion is equally notable for his passion and the goodwill and energy that he has contributed to the overall spirit of the series. It seems most likely that they both will find seats for the 2020 season, but in today's climate, nothing is a sure shot.

I'LL START THIS piece by apologizing to fans of Moto3 and Moto2. Congratulations to Albert Arenas and Luca Marini for their victories and championships in their respective classes. It was a dog fight until the final round in Valencia. This article is about one man and one man only, Marc Marquez and as well it should be! What he has done this season so far is simply mindboggling, especially considering the level of talent that lines up every week on the MotoGP grid! NEVADA RIDING BOOT BH&BR'S NEVADA RIDING BOOT is simple, sleek and stylish. It’s water-resistant and most importantly extremely comfortable. Leslie, the creator, and founder of BH&BR, started when she was on a cross country tour and wasn’t happy with her options for riding boots. You would think a riding boot is just a riding boot, but it’s more than that. It is about practicality. But it’s also about style. And for Leslie, those two factors were never found together in one. Leslie teamed up with Jordan, from Modern Vice to create the boot us gals have been looking for; a fashionable, functional riding boot, a bit of gear which is still overlooked in the motorcycle apparel industry. I’ve always believed if you look good, you feel
good. The Nevadas does that and more. Ever since I received the pair, I haven’t wanted to take them off. When getting dressed to ride, for once I’m actually excited to wear my boots. They’re protective, and like I said earlier, waterproof and fashionable. They look good with anything I wear and when I get off my bike, I feel as if I’m wearing boots I would wear being out and about, not just for riding. Sometimes while riding in other boots, I would find my foot sliding around because there isn’t much grip. However, with the Nevadas, that doesn’t happen. These are the most comfortable boots I own and I never want to wear anything else. There’s also a slight heel that gives you some height if you’re riding a bike that‘s a little higher than you prefer it to be. DECEMBER 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 69
THE LIFE: THE INSIDE LINE
The Nevada isn’t just for riding. I can dress it up to go out, or just wear it during everyday tasks. In October, I took them for the first time on a trip and a good time at EICMA in Milan, Italy. There’s more walking at this show than anything I can compare it to. By the time you get from the entrance to the venue to the beginning of the event, your feet will be hurting if you’re not wearing the proper shoes and you still have the whole day or even the whole week of the event. I took these babies to test and they passed with flying colors. I walked roughly 20k steps each 70 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2019
day just at EICMA. That wasn’t just it. I walked everywhere to and from EICMA and everywhere in the city. I was in Europe for two and a half weeks and I wore my Nevadas every day. I trotted around from Milan to Switzerland to Florence and more. Not once did I complain about my feet. Not once did I not feel fashionable. These boots are made for walking, riding and anything you choose to do, even hiking.

FAVORITE BIKE MODIFICATION/ACCESSORY: Brembo master cylinder and braided brake lines. FAVORITE PIECE OF RIDING GEAR: My helmet. I must protect my brain. MOST MEMORABLE RIDE: Pushing my limits, seeing how far I could lean the bike and how fast I could go. I apexed way too early in turn 11 and ended up in the grass. I didn't think the Xplane could sound any better, but after adding the SC Project, I was wrong! Now, the R1 sounds beastly! FAVORITE PIECE OF RIDING GEAR: I'd say my Shoei helmets! I have used Shoei since the very first day I started riding and I'll never switch. I absolutely love the fit, style, and level of protection. MOST MEMORABLE RIDE: The day my daughter did her first mini track day and I was riding along with her on the Grom. It was a lowside that I'm proud of because my bike and myself were fine and it helped me realize what I was doing wrong so I could become a better rider. FAVORITE PIECE OF RIDING GEAR: AGV K3 Five Continents helmet. MOST MEMORABLE RIDE: On my first bike, 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 300, rode with a group of people from San Diego , CA to Yuma, AZ. I was the only sport bike type in the group of 12 people. It was my first long ride on my first bike within my first year of riding. It was a great eye opener to the free feelings that riding provides. Â

DECEMBER 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 81
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: THE MIDSECTION ANYONE WHO HAS spent time in the gym knows the importance of building a strong core. In addition to injury prevention and the ability to produce more powerful movements, training the core has been shown to have a tremendous effect on sports performance. During my research on this topic, I ran across the quote below, which I felt had a direct application to motorcycle road racing and the topic for this month's article. "Remember the body is just a chain of intricate systems. Think of the core of your body as the epicenter of the muscular system. A strong core can help you eke out that one extra rep or move that one extra pound... The core muscles move

the upper body as a counterbalance for the movements beneath your feet. In other words, they control your balance and essentially keep you on your feet in changing environments." Bodybuilding.com, Andre Farnell, July 2010 Many road racing and track riding coaches focus on teaching proper body position on the motorcycle in order to help their students progressively improve their individual riding skills. A key part of this process is to help riders understand how to support their body weight using the muscles in their lower body. Once this goal is achieved, riders experience the benefits of increased dexterity with the controls, improved

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: THE MIDSECTION muscles and the subsequent breakdown of the chain of body control, it is important to position your torso in the correct position on the seat. When riders slide to close to the fuel tank it tends to bring the upper torso into a more upright position, causing the "reverse curve" in the lower spine shown by the red arrow in the photo below. Even though this rider is gripping the tank with his legs, providing support for his lower body, the extension of his core muscles disconnects his upper body from this base. The disconnection then requires this rider to support the weight of his upper body with his arms, causing a lack of traction, confidence, and feel.
differences in rider heights and the distance in reach from the fuel tank to the bars requiring a different placement on the seat for everyone.
Looking at the photo below of former AMA Superbike champion Josh Hayes, we can see that Josh has created a separation between his torso and the fuel tank. This is an important base for most riders. Of course, the amount of tank separation will vary from rider to rider. The
In my experience, a good starting point is to separate from the tank far enough that your outside leg contacts the tank at about mid-thigh. This provides good leverage to allow riders to transfer from side to side by pulling on the tank with this leg and allows riders to achieve the "rounded

The keys to proper placement on the seat are found in striking a balance between moving back far enough to achieve a "rounded back" while staying forward enough with your shoulders to ensure the ability to move in any direction while leaned over. This position is one that is held throughout the majority of the turn (while there is a significant lean angle). It is important to note that this position definitely changes both while braking and under heavy acceleration.
back". The important check and balance on this rearward placement are that you should be able to fully manipulate the controls from lock to lock without straightening your arms or contacting the tank with your chest. If your arms ever reach the limit of their travel when you are riding, you have officially lost control. Riders need to strive to achieve the "rounded back" while ensuring that their arms are always bent and relaxed all the way around the track.
you will find that photos taken mid-corner or under acceleration will almost always show evidence of the rounded back. Many riders, especially those on high powered race machines, will slide forward on acceleration to help keep the front wheel on the ground, but look closely at the midcorner body positions of riders like Marquez, Rossi, and Dovizioso and you will be able to see the tank separation, rounded back and outer leg stabilization that we mentioned in this article. We may not be able to emulate everything that these great riders do, but the achievement of proper mid-corner body position that keeps the link between our upper and lower body is an achievable goal for all.
Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule when it comes to riding style. If you look at photos of top riders from around the world, there are always a couple of riders who seem to be able to turn out fast laps with unconventional styles. However, if you look at a gallery of Until next time... Ride fast. Ride safe! MotoGP or WorldSBK or MotoAmerica stars,

FRICTION ZONE: FEMMEWALLA 2019
THERE'S NOTHING QUITE like watching the sun rising over the race track. The peaceful quiet of the morning, the excitement stirring for the day ahead, the beautiful colors reflecting off your freshly polished bike. There aren't few things that get me more excited than a track day, except of course for one very special day every December, the annual female-only track day at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway: Femmewalla! An event like none other, with more colorful bikes, suits, and ponytails flying out of helmets than any other track day, it's no wonder that female riders from all over the country look forward to it each year. Femmewalla got its start nine years ago when Chuckwalla Valley Raceway owner and female racer Aimee Grana requested that she and 2 of her closest friends Melissa Paris and Jen Dunstan could turn some testosterone free laps after the monthly SoCal Track Days events. The ladies enjoyed the track time so much that Grana began to organize annual women-only track events that focus on creating a supportive, safe, and non-intimidating way for female riders to experience the race track. Featuring three separate riding groups (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) ladies from all levels and backgrounds of riding enjoy the event. One attendee, Savannah Jaska, even boasted that the event offers a much more respectful, patient, and often less pressured track day event than co-ed ones. "Femmewalla is a day where women get to experience the track, grow and celebrate accomplishments in the sport. Above all, I’m so thankful for the people out there, men and women alike, who support female riders and racers, and push them to be just as good if not better than the men out there, and this event proves that! There wasn't one single red flag (crash) all day. When does that ever happen?!" In addition to emphasizing a fun, safe, and ego-free day, 92 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2019

Femmewalla has some pretty amazing perks for all the ladies attending. 2-UP rides with AMA champion and FIM World Endurance champion, Jason Pridmore, one-on-one on-track instruction from Racers Edge Performance owner and Pro AMA road racer, Dale Kieffer, trackside suspension services by AJ of Paradigm Racing, on track photography services by Caliphotography, and free demo rides on the brand new fleet of Yamahas offered by the Yamaha Champions Riding School. And to top it all off, the event closes with a lovely catered dinner just before the much-anticipated raffle with prizes that range from t-shirts, free track days, free days at well-known riding schools, new tires, all the way to up to a set of new custom leathers. All proceeds of the event go to an amazing charity, The Unforgettables Foundation which offers assistance to families that have lost a child. The organization holds a very special place in the Grana family's heart after tragedy struck them in 2008 when their 2-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident, and the financial burden of building the raceway left them without a way to pay for burial expenses. The Unforgettables Foundation helped the family navigate a devastating time in their lives as well as fund the cremation and memorial services, so it was an easy decision to hold Femmewalla in honor of baby Jessica and support such a worthy cause. Since the inception of Femmewalla, the Granas have raised over $45,000 for the foundation each year attendance at the event continues to grow.
