INDUSTRY NEWS SUPER73 R SERIES

The gang over at Super73 has unveiled their new R series, a sportier version of their electric motorbike that offers an impressive boost in performance as well as curb appeal. Available in two models, the R ($2995) and the RX ($3495), the R series bikes feature three riding modes or classes. Class- 1 mode operates with pedal assist without the use of the throttle for speeds up to 20mph. Class-2 riding mode allows for throttle operation and pedal-assist for speeds up to 20mph. Class-3 mode operates with pedal assist without the use of the throttle for speeds up to 28mph. There is also an unlimited mode that unleashes 2000 watts to achieve speeds in excess of 28mph. 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2020

The new R series also comes equipped with an electronic suite that connects with iOS and Andriod devices via the new Super73 mobile app. Other features include an optional IoT module that can serve as anti-theft security, crash detection, and geolocation tracking. The battery of the R series has a 960 watt-hour capacity that provides over 40 miles, at a range of 20mph using the throttle only operation and over 75mph using the ECO pedal assist mode. HARLEY DAVIDSON CEO STEPS DOWN Matthew Levatich has stepped down as President and CEO of Harley Davidson, as well as stepping away from the board of directors. The Milwaukee based company said that the parting was mutual and have appointed Jochen Zeitz as acting President and CEO while the board initiates a search for a permanent solution. “I am very fortunate to have spent many years with a company as revered as Harley-Davidson. The grit and determination of the employees and dealers and their passion for bringing our brand of freedom to people around the world has always been inspiring. I am proud of what we have

achieved during my time as CEO, in one of the most challenging periods in our history, and I am confident that the progress we have made on the More Roads plan will position Harley-Davidson for long-term success.� - Matthew Levatich Levatich will continue to assist throughout the transition period until the end of March. Additionally, Zeitz has replaced Michael Cave as chairman of the board of directors, a position that will remain beyond the appointment of the new CEO. Cave now holds the position of board director.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS DUCATI’S SUPERLEGGERA V4 Ducati has announced the limited production run of the Superleggera V4, a motorcycle that marks several firsts for a production model. Limited to only 500 individually numbered units, worldwide, the Superleggera V4 is the only street-legal motorcycle whose chassis, swingarm, whe el s, fa i ri ngs, a nd biplane aerofoils… all composed of carbon fiber. Dressed in a Desmosedici GP19 inspired livery, the

Superleggera V4 is powered by the Desmosedici Stradale R 998cc engine that produces just over 220hp. In harmony with all of that carbon, the remaining components are a proper combination of titanium, aluminum, and magnesium, resulting in a dry weight of 350.5 pounds. The bike ships with a race kit that includes an Akrapovic titanium system that boosts performance and engine output to over 230hp.

For those individuals fortunate enough to purchase the Superleggera V4, Ducati has put together a handsome owner’s package that includes a track time on the factory Worldsbk Panigale V4 and an opportunity to ride the Desmosedici GP20. Deliveries are expected to begin in June of 2020, at the rate of 5 bikes per day.

KTM CONTINUES TO up the ante in the naked bike world with the steady evolution of its mean-looking and open-class 2020 1290 Super Duke R ($18,699). The Austrian brand tames the brutish, and at times, uncivilized character of its 180-horsepower sport naked by reinventing the chassis and thunderous 1301cc LC8 Twin. We swung a leg over it during its test ride unveiling in Portugal. Leaner and most certainly meaner, the Super Duke’s appearance is tidier with a shorter overhangs fore and aft. Opposed to a traditional low-slung sportbike the Super Duke is devoid of a front fairing and lower cowl, which shows off its muscular twin-cylinder engine. In a dealership full of cookie-cutter bikes, the Super Duke stands out with its now signature split praying mantis shaped LED headlamp. A closer look reveals the mesh-screened ram air intake which loads the big Twin with fresh air. A pair of 24 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2020


airbox-mounted, showerhead-style fuel injectors shoot into the engine – boosting top-end power – something that the 1290 historically lacked. This along with improved engine mapping increases the 1290’s potency, especially when barreling across 160 mph straightaways. The 75-degree LC8 retains its punchy demeanor off idle–torquing away from stop signs like few other sport motorcycles. An optional electronic quickshifter maximizes thrust during shifts through the six-speed gearbox, without letting off the throttle, nor squeezing the clutch lever. As usual, the Super Duke R is a hoot to blitz away from traffic lights. With 103 lb-ft claimed torque, the 17-inch front wheel climbs toward the sky easily, in any of the first four gears. Electronic anti-wheelie control keeps the front wheel hovering near the pavement. Of course, the rider can manually disable this feature, and rely on a dab of the rear brake to set down the

wheel. Either way, the choice is yours. When it’s time to shed triple digit speeds, the Super Duke R uses a beautiful set of machined Brembo Stylema superbike calipers gripping 320mm diameter rotors. The setup is powered through stainless-steel hoses and a radial pump master cylinder. Lever position adjustment is another nice touch. The optional quickshifter also includes auto-blip downshift function so the rider can downshift without squeezing the clutch. This add-on is exceptionally helpful when making downshifts at lean. Lean angle sensitive cornering ABS helps mitigate wheel lock up during brake application. The ABS system also includes a “supermoto” mode, which deactivates rear ABS for advanced pilots that wish to slide by brake during corner entry. The Super Duke R’s historically spongy suspension components were a weak link–especially when ridden at an elevated pace. We’re happy to report that the new Apex generation fork from WP offers greater support and road holding. In addition to tool-less style compression and rebound damping adjusters, the fork includes spring preload adjustability. Ride height can be modified based on preference or rider weight. Red rubber sliders monitor fork travel, so it’s easier to dial in the optimum setup. The 1290’s rear suspension benefits from a linkage-type configuration greatly improving suspension action. Where the non-linkage equipped 2014-2019 models exhibited hyper, supermoto-like movement at pace, the new setup delivers a calmer and more compliant action– similar to Aprilia’s class-leading Tuono V4. Damping adjustment controls on the shock body and a handy twist-style preload adjustment knob facilitate quick changes. proving KTM pays attention to details. Well done, KTM. A tilt-adjustable Samsung Galaxy S7-sized color TFT display functions as the Super Duke’s command center. With crisp fonts and a bold range of colors, the panel is a tremendous upgrade from the dinky display employed KTM’s other road bikes. In lieu of a touchscreen, settings are manipulated through handlebar-mounted switchgear. Logical menu navigation makes it easy to tweak individual settings. The size of the buttons and their tactile feel are improved, making it easy to enable features like cruise control. We’re especially fond of the left hand paddle-style buttons so the wheel spin threshold can be modified, on the fly, while riding at pace. More polished in every way, the 1290 Super Duke R, knows how to get loose and burn Bridgestone Battlax rubber on the street and racetrack. And with its enhanced chassis and more capable electronics package, it balances this wild behavior with a degree of competence that we missed since the RC8R sportbike retired. YAMAHA CONFIRMS VINALES AND QUARTARARO FOR 2021-2022. WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE ROSSI?

Yamaha confirmed the signing of MotoGP Rookie of the Year, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo in a two-year contract for the 2021 and 2022 MotoGP season. Currently, Quartararo is under contract with the satellite Petrona Yamaha Sepang Racing Team for the 2020 season and will complete his obligations with full support from the factory Yamaha while piloting a factory-spec YZR-M1 before joining Maverick Vinales in the factory garage for the 2021 season. Maverick Vinales recently extended his tenure with the factory Yamaha team for two years (20212022). The Spaniard concluded the 2019 season third in overall championship points.

THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS THE OPENING ROUND OF THE 2020 MOTOGP PREMIER CLASS - CANCELED Directly related to the threat of the Corona Virus, the government of Qatar has imposed travel restrictions and mandatory quarantine procedures on every one of Italian nationality or residents of Italy arriving from there to be sure they haven’t been in Italy during the last 14 days. The result? The cancelation of the premier class' opening round of the 2020 season that was scheduled for the first weekend of March.

Further, the Thailand Grand Prix has been postponed under the same concerns by the Thailand government. Italy is third in reported cases of the Corona Virus, after China and South Korea.

The concern of how the virus will impact the entire 2020 MotoGP season is growing. THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. I ALWAYS SAY the best thing about winter is the anticipation of the upcoming MotoGP season. Yeah, Christmas is okay. A lot of stress and future debt. New Years? Hangovers are so overrated. Besides, after we found out the world didn’t end after 1999, it kind of lost its appeal. So what does that leave us with besides snacking on cookies and putting on hoodies and sweaters to hide that extra winter weight? If you guessed the anticipation of the upcoming MotoGP season then you hit the jackpot! For us GP Freaks, this is the time of year where you start calling your shots on who’s got a shot at the championship, who's got surgery and who’s gonna be the surprise of the upcoming season. It’s also the time where you tell your loved ones that you’ll be present only in the physical sense, mentally, you’ll be thinking, “Is this the week that Fabio wins?”, “Can anybody stop Marquez?”, and “Can the Doctor get just one more?” Sepang allows a peek into what the upcoming season may bring. It’s like the coming of Spring, in a way. It’s still way too early to tell what the season may bring but it does give a glimpse. Honestly, who saw Fabio being a threat to Marquez after Sepang last year? If any of you reading this did, then I’m going to call you a liar, liar, pants on fire! Nostradamus couldn’t have seen what 2019 would bring. I personally thought Pecco Bagnaia was going to be rookie of the year. Shows what I know. As I make my predictions on what the 2020 season will bring, just know, it is an inexact science. Kind of like figuring out what makes a woman happy, its a lot of guessing. But based on what I’ve read and my gut instinct, these are my predictions for the 2020 MotoGP season! 40 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2020

TEAM SUZUKI Watch out! Team Suzuki has come out of the gate armed and ready. Alex Rins garnered two wins and a podium last year. And by all accounts, this year's bike is even better than last year’s with more horses and better drive out of the corners, which all GP riders said last year was the best bike out of the corners. Look for Rins to really shake things up along with his teammate Joan Mir, who I feel would’ve been in the running for Rookie of the Year if it wasn’t for a horrific crash in testing at Brno last Summer. The only thing holding Rins back will be Rins. He needs consistency and to be ready to battle tooth and nail every week if he wants to make that leap into a title contender! He’s got the talent as was evident when he outdueled Rossi in Austin. He’s going to have to do that every week if he wants to be considered one of the elites of GP. I say Rins finishes 5th in the championship. Watch out for his teammate Mir to get his first podium this year.


KTM I love this factory. They show that they come to win. The hiring of Dani Pedrosa as a test rider is going to pay big dividends for this team. But it also comes with added pressure. That pressure lands square on the shoulders of that good looking bastard, Pol Espargaro. This has got to be a breakthrough year for Espargaro. He needs consistent top four places, which is not going to be easy in this talent-laden field. Being this is a contract year, look for Esparago to challenge for poles consistently with what I predict will be two podiums and two poles.

THE DUCS Ducati has talent dripping from their big red machines, like tears from a three-year-old who’s not allowed any more ice cream. While I love the cerebral approach of Andreas Dovizioso, I see Dovi having a slight drop off and Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller having a fantastic year. Miller, like Rins, needs consistency, but what works with Miller is he has plenty of incentive as he makes no bones about wanting the Factory spot alongside Dovizioso. Watch for Miller to be in the thick of things this season and quite possibly getting a

victory over the Big 4. As Cal Crutchlow said, “Jack’s got big balls!” And he’s going to need them but look for him to make that leap, garner the factory ride and get at least three podiums and a victory. Sadly, I feel this will be Danilo Petrucci’s last year in the factory squad. Petrucci squeezes all he can out of his talents and is to be saluted, but sometimes, that’s not enough. Look for a solid year out of sophomore Pecco Bagnaia. The kid has talent. This will be the year he shows why he was high on Ducati's list as the future of the big red machine.


TEAM HONDA AND THE MARQUEZ SITUATION Let’s face it. Marc Marquez is Team Honda! No ifs, and or buts. If you don’t think so, how many riders you know can get their brother on the same team? That’s power, folks And it should be that way. He’s earned it. 8 world championships in 9 years? His style is the stuff of highlight reels. But with that style, comes a price and Marc’s paying for that right now. He’s had his second shoulder surgery in as many years and this one seems to be a little more worrisome to the Champ.

This time last year Marc was basically dealing with the same issue but on his left shoulder. This seems to be plaguing the Champ in that he’s unable to push the new bike the way he wants and will hamper his development of the bike.

I say all this but this is Marc Marquez, not some mere mortal. If there is a will there is a way and Marc will find a way. That being said, the shoulder, coupled with his brother alongside him in the garage will be a little bit more than the Champ can handle this year. As hard as it is Going from body language, this injury to Marc’s to type, I predict Marquez finishes second this right shoulder may be a little more serious than first season! That's right! The Baby Face Assassin, expected. At press time, the unconfirmed rumor second! was that Marquez needed another surgery on his right shoulder because of possible nerve damage. Everybody falls off at some point.

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. TEAM YAMAHA AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE G.O.A.T. Plain and simple, Yamaha has a group of monsters! This lineup is the top of the GP grid! You’ve got the people's champion Fabio Quartararo, you’ve got Maverick Viñales, who I argue with anyone was the most consistent he’s ever been and of course, you have the G.O.A.T., Valentino Rossi and to really just cement their stance on how serious they are, they have a five-time World Champion Jorge Lorenzo as their test rider. Yamaha has brought a bazooka to a gunfight! These guys will rough up the competition and establish themselves on top of the heap of GP for 2020! While I see Fabio having an even better year than ‘19, getting that long-deserved win, battling every week for the top spot of the podium, it is his teammate Vinales who I see as his the 2020 Champion! Vinales was the first rider to sign his 2021 contract, he’s got the same team as last year and he’s happy! When you factor, familiarity and happiness... that is the recipe for success. Maverick has always shown he’s got the talent but

it is his mental game that’s always been suspect. Now? I believe you will see Top Gun upset The Champ! There! I said it! Rossi! What can be said that hasn’t already been said. I love the Doctor more than any heterosexual man should love another heterosexual man but as they say, all good things must come to an end. It’s in the body language, the look on his face in the garage... the Doc seems different. I think he can eke out one more victory but to sustain that over a 19 race weekend season, is too tall a task for the G.O.A.T. Vale says he will make up his mind during the European rounds but I think the writing is on the wall. Yamaha already has their factory team for 2021, without Rossi. Sure he has an option for a spot on Team Petronas but I am seeing this as Rossi’s Last Stand. He will leave the sport as a legend and well-loved, but time waits for no one. I’m sure tears will be shed but... Life will go on! Look for Yamaha to also win the Constructors Championship with a boost from forgotten man Franko Morbidelli. This will be Team Yamaha's year! Count on it!


There you have it, my predictions. Are there other factors that will come into play? Of course. The new Michelin tyres, which everyone seems to love, wet races, etc. But overall, this is how I see the season playing out. I think this will be the greatest season of MotoGP EVER! I know I say that every year, but I really, really, really believe it.

CODY LOWE HAS MANAGED TO TAKE HOME THE KINGS OF GRUDGE HAND CLUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE 2018 SEASON. THIS MONTH, WE reached out to Woolfolk Motorsports' featured rider, Cody Lowe out of Louisa, Virginia. I have been privileged to watch the growth of various riders over the past seven years and C. Lowe is a personal favorite of mine. In this day and age, riding is a science and it is extremely difficult to find a rider that can do it all. Every rider can’t tell the mechanic what the bike was doing each after pass and describe what the machine was doing from gear to gear in order to get it properly tuned before the money is on the line. Riding a true hand clutch machine is a science and only a few riders can do it at a high level against stiff competition. Cody Lowe has managed to take home the Kings of Grudge Hand Clutch championship in the 2018 season. From the small town of Louisa in Virginia to racing against some of the best competition in grudge racing from the Mid West to the East Coast. FROM THE SMALL TOWN OF LOUISA IN VIRGINIA TO RACING AGAINST SOME OF THE BEST COMPETITION IN GRUDGE RACING FROM THE MID WEST TO THE EAST COAST Woolfolk Motorsports went on a tear in the hand clutch class. They put together a machine that was at the top of the food chain. It was in a class by itself and they named in Bando. In 2019, They picked up exactly where they left off. Except, this time, they were on a completely different machine and they were right back in the winner's circle. The only difference was that this hand clutch monster called Quavo. The main competition on the season was a Kawasaki ZX14 called Rambo, piloted by Caleb Holt. This was Cody Lowe's rival throughout the entire grudge season and they battled all year long. As the season wore on, maintenance and consistency became the issue, being able to get the machines down the track consistently at each event. At the season finale, Rambo and Quavo locked horns in the hand clutch finals and Cody Lowe took the victory. However, Rambo won the season championship based on points. PLANNING YOUR ROAD TRIP TO AUSTIN FOR GP

IT’S THE GREATEST time of the year again America's GP. Many people from all over travel to Austin by plane, car or motorcycle. I’ve traveled by plane, and by car. Coming from Florida is definitely a dreading road trip, so my preferred way is to fly and have someone bring my bike up. However, it doesn’t always work that way, but when it does, it’s party time! Every year I’ve stayed in a hotel, but this time I will be staying in an Airbnb. I found that booking an Airbnb may make the stay extra special: more intimate and to get that real Austin feeling. The track, Circuit of the Americas is not too far from the city center, however, you definitely don’t want to stay close to the track, although it seems pretty ideal. Anything near the track is not as nice as you would get downtown besides being far from everything that is going on outside the track FEBRUARY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 63

events and all, so I suggest staying downtown and taking the short time to drive to COTA. If you’re coming in a car, you will need to purchase parking passes quite ahead of time, as they do sell out. Just because you have a parking pass, doesn’t mean you are in P1, so it’s quite a hike. If you ride in on a Ducati, you have VIP treatment. You roll into Ducati Island, park your bike and boom, you’re right there. No painful walking or waiting in traffic. They even have gear check! So you can enjoy walking around comfortably without your clunky gear and bags. In order to have that treatment, you will need to purchase Ducati Island tickets and be a Ducati Owners Club member to check your gear. Ticket packages start at $239 per ticket for 3 days, which includes Ducati Island parking, Turn 1 grandstand ticket, a Ducati Track Lap opportunity, Pit Lane Walk and the Zip Line! Which I think it’s pretty damn cool. As for events, obviously, the Sportbikes Inc Magazine party on Friday night is a must! And here’s tons of other things going on! Do yourself a favor and research to see what will make your list of priorities because before you know it, the weekend is over! Now... Who is ready for COTA? I sure am! This was my first solo ride with my Honda and my first big ride following a road accident that left me recovering from brain injury for two years. (Luckily, I’m well recovered now!) IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: JP43 NEXT GENERATION IN THE MOTORCYCLE road racing world especially in Southern California, the name Jason Pridmore (JP) is almost as well known as Valentino Rossi. With a reputation that precedes itself far beyond the race track, what is this secret sauce that JP has been serving up to motorcyclists from all over the world that has made him such a household name? With so many schools out on the market, it's hard for a rider that's ready to make improvements to decide which school or coach is worth the financial investment and which one is going to give them the biggest return for their money. The question must be asked: Why is his school so successful? What is he teaching that has had such an impact on track enthusiasts? I think these questions are what are in the back of every rider's mind when deciding whether or not to seek one on one training with JP. that I make and learning new skills is what really drives me to achieve. But recently after some mental setbacks, I was starting to fall out of love with the sport and began to plateau, which is what lead me to seek coaching with JP. I have never worked with a coach that spent so much time and focus asking me questions about my goals, my struggles, and what I think is holding back my riding. Then having the ability to go out and turn just a few laps with Jason and have him immediately be able to give me really useful pointers and skills to work on for the remainder of the day is what sets him apart from other schools I've attended. By the end of the day, I felt so much more confident, capable, and had a notebook full of so many takeaways to work on for the next track day. The formula is simple: Jason's innate ability to read and decipher a rider and dissect the aspects of their riding that is holding them back is what makes his coaching so unique. No gimmicks, no hard standards, no rigid curriculum, simply a coach that listens and has a very deeply invested desire to see other riders achieve their goals. Dream no further because JP encourages all his students to stay in contact and ask those questions, or seek counsel with him when the inevitable mental monster tries to rear its ugly head. To me, all this and being able to have JP on the pit wall cheering me on is a priceless memory that I'll never forget as a racer and not something I could ever put a price on.
