FROM THE EDITOR
2021 With the start of a new year, there is an opportunity to start anew. A new year presents a chance to refresh oneself, get rid of bad habits, perhaps start new good habits. As I have gotten older, the concept of setting a "new year's resolution" doesn't carry the same weight with me. The idea of waiting for the first day of the new year to start doing things that you should have been or to stop doing the things that you should have not been doing seems a bit extra to me.
is the execution of bettering myself every day. Every morning is a new opportunity for me to put my foot forward and be a better version of myself... At least better than I was yesterday. In actuality, the movement should be based on making your every move, better than the last one. Improve yourself at every chance you get. Progress always, in all ways. I hope that this year is your best year, yet. And may your tomorrow be better than your today.
If you know that you can do better, then you should be doing better. Period. Best, Allan What I've been focusing on, more recently @mrblackmoses 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021

TRIUMPH'STRIDENT660 THE NEW TRIUMPH TRIDENT 660 IS PROVING THAT FUN BIKES DON’T NEED TO BE THE MOST POWERFUL, EXPENSIVE, OR FULL OF ELECTRONICS.

THE FIRST RIDE: TRIUMPH TRIDENT 660 DESPITE ORGANIZATIONAL DIFFICULTIES, stemming from the current global pandemic situation, Triumph managed to carry out an international press launch on the beautiful Canary island Tenerife for their new middleweight naked bike, the Triumph Trident 660. A motorcycle that has the potential to become a real conquest for the British brand by bringing new riders into the fold. Standing in front of the bike, my first impression is that the Trident is a good-looking motorcycle. The design team in Hinckley, England has achieved a timeless design, one that delivers classic aesthetics without being as comprehensively retro as some of their other models in their lineup, like the Bonneville. This classic design is a real contrast to the sharp, futuristic style of some of the Japanese competitors in the naked middleweight scene, such as Yamaha's MT-07 or Kawasaki's Z650. The Trident’s silhouette is rather minimalistic and exudes a certain elegance. The license plate is mounted to the swingarm which gives the rear profile a clean look. The Trident will be available in four different colors. All in all, the new roadster looks neither imposing nor intimidating, and its perceived quality is excellent. The saddle on the Trident rises to 31.7 inches from the ground, which may sound tall to less vertically gifted riders. However, the slim seat profile allows me, at 5' 6", to have both feet firmly on the ground. Expecting a smaller bike, even the taller riders in our group were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable this bike was. This 660cc machine might look compact but it caters well to both small and tall people - a good compromise and also a confidence booster for shorter or more inexperienced riders. The riding position is more relaxed than Triumph's sporty Street Triple model, with bars that are nicely wide and comfortably close to you. You'll find yourself in an upright position, not leaned too far back and passive but not too hunched forward and sporty. 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021

THE FIRST RIDE: TRIUMPH TRIDENT 660
28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021
Right from the start, the Trident feels amazingly easy to handle. At a wet weight of 416.7 pounds, it immediately gives the impression of lightness and ease of maneuvering. The engine too is excellent and really shines through many miles on both the freeway and twisty mountain roads. While the Trident's motor has clearly evolved from the triple-cylinder power plant originally found in the Daytona 675, this new 660cc version can be called a brand-new motor with 67 new components. The liquid-cooled, 660cc, 12-valve, DOHC, inline-triple has a peak power output of 81hp at 10,250 rpm and peak torque of 47 lb-ft at 6,250 rpm. Triumph promises the best of both worlds with this new middleweight triple, as it delivers the low rev punch and pulling power of a twin, and revving ability of an inline-four. This balancing act succeeds in giving the rider 90% of the available torque from 3,600 to 9,750 rpm. The Trident may not have quite the same amount of low-end grunt as the MT-07, but the torque doesn't stop pulling until the adjustable shift light reminds you to change gears. This small block is lively and lots of fun. One of the truly enjoyable things about a bike like the Trident is that you don’t have to ride it at license, or life, threatening speeds in order to have fun with it. You can merely roll on the gas, float playfully from one corner to the next, and enjoy the torquey motor with its short gearing in 1st through 4th gear. It doesn’t feel intimidating nor overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, you can definitely ride this 660 fast. The bike tracks precisely where you want it to go, staying stable and planted in long fast turns. One could almost say that this machine acts more maturely than you’d expect from a middleweight naked bike. On the small winding roads, the Trident can be ridden with ease, even when the asphalt is wet or less than impeccable. The electronic, ride-by-wire, connection linking the throttle grip to the throttle JANUARY 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 29

valves is as smooth as it is precise in whichever mode is engaged. And here the British have chosen to offer only two throttle maps “Road” and “Rain” which affect traction control and throttle response. Coming standard with a slipper clutch and traction control, the latter of which can be switched off, the Trident offers the rider, especially an inexperienced rider, a feeling of security. Unfortunately, the press bikes our friends from Leicestershire brought for us are not equipped with the up and down quickshifter option. However, if it is the same system used on their Street Triples, it will be precise and a ton of fun. Dropping down from the Teide and towards the coast once again, I have the chance to really put the Nissin brakes on the 660 through their paces. On the Trident, you’ll find twin 310mm discs up front and a single 255mm disc in the rear, all of which work securely and provide plenty of stopping power without being too aggressive. As someone with smaller hands, I found myself appreciating the adjustable brake lever. The 41mm upside-down forks by Showa have 4.72 inches of travel and add to the premium look of the bike. While neither the front or rear suspension are adjustable, the rear shock absorber, with lever deflection, does at least have adjustable preload and a sufficient 5.23 inches of travel. For heavier riders or when riding with a passenger, you may find the Trident’s suspension to be slightly too soft. The passenger seat is not large, and the pillion footpegs position my feet fairly close to the rider’s heels when I sit on the back of this bike. So passengers will find themselves in quite a snug position. If you do plan to ride two-up often, you can get passenger bars as an accessory. And the 452-pound max load rating should allow you to carry some extra gear along with a companion. All in all, the suspension on this middleweight naked bike is a good compromise for diverse riders and loading situations and offers a good combo of performance and comfort. You can control connected devices such as your phone, navigation system, or even GoPro via the "My Triumph Connectivity System" application, available as an optional extra, with intuitive buttons found on the left side of the handlebars. Triumph has observed current industry standards and will bring the Trident to the US priced at an affordable $7,995. This positions the Trident right in between its competitors Kawasaki Z650 ABS $7,749, MT-07 $7,699, and Honda CB650R ABS $9,199. Despite the class-standard price, the Trident has a definite high-quality feel and riding behavior. It seems that for Triumph, low cost does not equal low end.

THE FIRST RIDE: KTM 450 SMR SUPERMOTO RIDING IS about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. I’m yet to meet a rider who isn’t completely smitten the first time they try it. the glory days of the early 2000s. Husqvarna can be largely thanked for this resurgence with the splendid FS450 (I own one. Love it). And now KTM has decided to get back into the game proper with the KTM SMR 450. To be fair, KTM owns Husqvarna, so in reality,
they always kept a toe in the water. But now the orange brigade is back in full force. The 2021 KTM 450 SMR is essentially a KTM 450 SX-F motocross weapon in fancy dress. It runs the same 450cc motor with the identical cylinder head, titanium inlet and exhaust valves, cams, piston, conrod, crank and gearbox. However, the SMR
is fitted with a Suter slipper clutch to stop you from locking the rear wheel under when downshifting into corners. Trust me. You want this slipper clutch. It makes downshifts even more fun than upshifts. You also get the same base chromium molybdenum steel frame, aluminum subframe and swingarm. JANUARY 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 41

set-up in the Brembo radial master-cylinder and Brembo M50 radially-mounted four-piston caliper squeezing a Galfter 310 mm disc up front. While at the rear you get a 220 mm rotor and singlepiston caliper.
A large part of what makes it so good under brakes is the Suter slipper clutch. Which keeps the rear wheel from locking and allows the rider to explore backing the rear in on the rear brake. Just like Pol Espargaro does so well.
The orange show rolls on 16.5-inch front and 17-inch rear Alpina tubeless spokes wheels shod with Bridgestone racing slicks (V02). Oh, and you get switchable traction control and two-variable engine maps. One for lower and one for higher rpm performance.
In the dirt, the suspension is plush but not overly soft. If anything, a rider of my 190 lb frame will need at least two springs heavier on the rear to help corner exit stability. But for an out-of-the-box motorcycle, the KTM 450 SMR is as close to race-ready as you can get.
Horny is a gross understatement when describing the SMR 450. In practice, the SMR is the kind of motorcycle that will make heroes out of the ordinary rider and a god out of the professional. Being a long, tall dirtbike on slicks, it’s extremely forgiving and encourages you to brake later and later, while the power delivery is fast and furious, yet at the same time, not abrupt.
You’ve got a machine underneath you that will allow you to ride moto style, or road race style, and still get the same lap times. Versatility is the name of the supermoto game, which makes it such an integral training tool for the world’s best riders. If you’re like me and want to just put gas in and go rip, this is probably the best bike on the market today. JANUARY 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 47

Highly competitive and extremely entertaining, the success of the, then one-off invitational event was undeniable. So much so that MotoAmerica announced its return with five rounds for the 2021 season as part of the MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Series. The King Of The Baggers race series sees qualified AMA license holders racing modified Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle bagger style motorcycles, competing in a flag to flag sprint. THE 2020 BT MOTOGP AWARDS JANUARY 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 55
THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. YOU’VE HEARD EVERYBODY say it. So it feels pretty much hack now to say, “I can’t wait for 2020 to be over with!” Or, “This year... blah, blah, blah”! But being the eternal optimist I am, 2020 was, in a strange way, the best year in MotoGP in a long, long time. The championship wasn’t decided until the penultimate race. There were nine different winners and some tracks were raced two weekends in a row. This year was definitely different. But it was still MotoGP. Which meant that no matter how bad it seemed, it was still Grand Prix Racing. It was kinda like pineapple on pizza. No matter what your stance is... it is still pizza! If you are new to my style of moto-journalism, and I use that term loosely, I do things a little differently. You want to know how a bike operates and the scientific approach to MotoGP, please read David Emmett or Mat Oxley. Those guys are incredible. Now, you want to know what a dude with a junior college education thinks of the greatest sport on Earth? Well, brotha' or bro-Etta, look no further. I’m your dude! This piece right here is my favorite. These are the BT MotoGP Awards! No stuffy "you already know the winner" awards bull. These awards are for the people! People like me and you that are reading. That may be slightly inebriated. Or who wonders “I wonder which one of those guys on those bikes can throw down? If need be!” Sit back, grab a cold smoothie. Pop your popcorn and have a few laughs at my annual BT MotoGP Awards... 56 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021
MOST LIKELY TO STARCH A MOFO AWARD - THE RIDER YOU’D HATE TO FIGHT BUT WOULD WANT ON YOUR SIDE IN A FIGHT Danilo Petrucci. Some might say Cal Crutchlow or Jack Miller. And although both are tough as nails, Andrea Iannone is bat shit crazy! I’ll run from crazy but I’ll fight tough. You have a chance with tough. With crazy, they may never find your remains. The problem is, Iannone is doing MotoGP’s version of the Witness Relocation Program. In other words, he’s gone! Tested dirty. Appealed. And then the Hammer really dropped. We will never see him race a motorcycle ever again. Which is a shame. But it brings us to Danilo Petrucci. Petrucci is a nice friendly fellow but when push comes to shove, nobody wants a piece of the Big Man. As evident when he gave the Italian Salute to Aleix Espargaro and Espargaro never ventured his way again.
JANUARY 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 57
THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. "WHERE IS HE?" AWARD - THE GUY YOU DON’T WANT TO BE LINED UP AGAINST BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO DO. MOTOGP'S VERSION OF MOTO3'S DARREN “DIVE BOMB” BINDER Johann Zarco. This may seem a little unfair. But tell that to Pol Espargaro and Franky Morbidelli and Valentino Rossi, who famously quipped, “This isn’t Moto2!” Don’t get me wrong, Zarco isn’t dirty and I’m not implying that. But if you need to pass someone to win a championship and he’s in your way, you just might be given to think, “You know what? I'm good. I can win it next week.”

"HOW YOU DOIN’?" AWARD - WHO LOOKS THE BADDEST IN THEIR LIVERY/BIKE/RIDER COMBO Iker Lecuona. Usually, this award goes to Pol “The Handsome Bastard” Espargaro. But like this year has gone for him on the track, he once again loses to another KTM Rider. Seeing Iker in all his KTM Tech3 glory on-screen really brought home how badass this kid looks. They talk about the beauty of the Suzuki, but the Tech3 KTM blue, orange, silver and black were just too badass to pass up! But keeping it real, that Suzuki/Mir “Big Slim” Livery/Rider combo was a close second.
60 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021
THE NEW KID IN TOWN AWARD - ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Bad Brad Binder. This kid put South Africa back on the map and for the right reason. He won a race in dominant “Marc Marquez Ass Kickin’" style in only his third time out! Binder has the disposition of a kid who you could easily steal his lunch money but once that helmet is on and that visor goes down, he turns into “Bad, bad, Leroy Brown”! Binder’s style was aggressive yet smooth! Sometimes it worked. Ala his first race win in only his third race. And sometimes it bit him in the ass like a snake you stop on in the woods. Hence the vicious high-side in his second race. Honorable mention goes to Alex Marquez who nearly kissed the top step of the podium twice. These two gunners are proof that the future of GP is in good hands.

HAVE A DRINK ON ME AWARD - RIDER YOU MOST WANT TO HAVE A TASTY BEVERAGE WITH AND TALK ABOUT ‘DAT LIFE Valentino Rossi. To hear him talk about his 20 plus years in a GP paddock would be golden. And I’m sure he’d make my stomach hurt as well with his great sense of humor. Honorable mention goes to Maverick Vinales. I’ve always been fascinated by Vinales. And over a couple of Mojitos who knows what juicy nuggets he would drop.

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.
RUN THAT BACK AWARD - BEST GP ROUND OF 2020 LeMans. This one was close. But I gotta go with LeMans. On a wet track, the Ducks were out for the kill and a rookie nearly spoiled the party. But “The Big Man” Petrucci pulled it off. Yeah, LeMans. A close, close second was Austria Part Two, when Miguel Oliveira broke Jack Miller and Pol Esparago’s heart in the last turn. Great finish to a strange race.

“HOW YA LIKE ME NOW?” AWARD - MOST IMPROVED RIDER Franky Morbidelli. After being shown up by his teammate in 2019, Morbidelli came back with a vengeance with three race wins and runner up in the championship. Franky did this with a fashion that was so stylish and cool that if you could ever envision someone wearing sunglasses as they cross a finish line, it’d be Franco Morbidelli. If cool was a person it’d be Franco Morbidelli.
66 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021
YOU GOTS TO CHILL AWARD
Pol “The Handsome Bastard” Espargaro. If Latin Temper was a person, it’d be Espargaro. This is what makes his jump to Repsol that much more interesting. Espargaro’s wife must be the most bored wife on Earth because she never has to ask what he’s thinking! He wears his emotions on his sleeve and quite frankly I love it. He shows passion and damn it! we need that. I hate cookiecutter emotions or the lack thereof. Pol is the one who defies all of that and his expressions tell you exactly everything. When he does learn to channel that in the right way, a championship could be his for the taking.

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. RIDER OF THE YEAR AWARD This one will get me hot water but... Fabio Quartararo and one was capable of doin’ the damn thang! Fabio and Franky Franky Morbidelli. Honorable mention, Joan Mir. had three wins each, compared to Mir’s lone win. But Mir walked away with the big boy title and will be remembered Hear me out. For all of Yamaha’s troubles, they still won in the annals of GP history! more than any other manufacturer. Even though the Consistency is key in GP and Mir was that. But all things consensus was that Suzuki was the better bike. It seemed being equal, I tip my hat to the F Boys, Fabio and Franky. like out of the four bikes that Yamaha had on the grid, only When they are on, they were hard to handle. And truth

be told, Mir should’ve been awarded “Most Improved” by yours truly but it don’t work that way. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Mir is a worthy Champion and it is well deserved. I absolutely love the kid. But I say Rider of the Year goes to The “F” Boys! They pass the eye test for me. It
may not make sense to any of you but I’m a different breed of cat and that’s what a Junior College Education gives you. Props to all three for a fantastic year and I hope next year brings even better racing. 2021 will be interesting for sure but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. If you have a question, concern or comment for this year's BT MotoGP awards, drop it below in the comment section and we can have a discussion. Until then, hope I gave you a few laughs and you enjoyed my awards for the season that was 2020! It was crazy. It was good. It was crazy good. But let’s not do it this way again. I want a return back to normalcy. New circuits. And “Eight X“ back! As of the writing of this article, Marc Marquez has undergone his third operation on his right arm and looks to miss at least some of the 2021 season. So much for Normalcy. THE BRAIN IS a muscle. The more that you use it, the stronger it becomes. That reality is ever so true when it comes to existing as a motorcyclist. Shedding your bad habits, learning new and proper riding techniques, applying them with proper seat time, over and over until they become second nature. Correction… they should simply become your nature.
COREY ALEXANDER
In my two decades behind the bars of a motorcycle, I’ve learned a lot from being around the right type of riders. I’ve also learned a lot from being around the wrong type of riders, mostly to stay clear of them. What I’ve learned from being around the right type of rider is that you can always learn more. Continuing your education as a rider is paramount to your longevity as a rider.

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: BACK TO SCHOOL So where do you begin, if you have not begun your path in higher learning? Taking a class with a quality track school should be just as mandatory as taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course to receive your endorsement on your license. Across the country, there are a number of qualified track day organizations. I recommend getting in touch with your local organization and see what they offer in terms of introduction programs. Most of them offer a “try the track” special that allows you the opportunity to experience a number of laps with a control rider. While simple as it seems, if you’ve never been on the track, the “try the track” experience can be quite the eyeopener. The skills learned on track transfer directly to street application. Go to school. You will become a better rider. Guaranteed. In the past several years, I have taken courses with Team ProMotion, Absolute Cycle Experience, Penguin Road Racing School, California SuperBike School, Yamaha Champion Riding School and Jason Pridmore’s Star School. This year, I’ll be returning to a few of those schools to sharpen my skills and see how much more knowledge I can absorb. Effective confidence comes with proper seat time. Effective confidence is a by-product of higher learning from a qualified mentor, instructor, or situation. Yes, you can learn a lot from a situation. The problem that is so prevalent today with many new riders, is that they think they know it all. And while some know a great deal or have had the benefit of learning from a proper riding mentor, a majority of them have no clue as to what they are doing. And often, you can not convince them of otherwise. I subscribe to the riding theory that I ride so that 82 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JANUARY 2021

I can ride again tomorrow. On the contrary, there is a counter-theory that promotes riding like there is no tomorrow. I find that tragic. I urge all riders, new and experienced that if they have not attended a track school that they do it as soon as possible. If you are an active track rider, make the effort to encourage your fellow street riders to give the track a try. And if you are a track day organization or school, make certain to promote the special introductory programs that are geared toward new track day students. Make this year, the year that you level up and go back to school. Shed your bad riding habits. Sharpen your riding skills and practice proper riding techniques until they become your nature.
