EDITOR’S LETTER EDITORIAL

THETEAM

It seems that bikes are in so many films these days. We’ve had a select few movies attempt to represent us and our culture. How effective they were is completely up for interpretation. It just seems that Hollywood just can’t seem to get it 100% correct no matter how close they get or how hard they try. WE NEED A REAL BIKER FILM, MADE BY REAL BIKERS! There. I said it. Feels good to get that off my chest. Enjoy the Movie Issue! Best, Allan

Kawasaki drops the 2013 Ninja ZX10R

The Kawasaki ZX10R has done extremely well in the 2012 WSBK season, proving that the bike can be competitive on the grid. The model has done exceptionally well on the streets and local track events and managed not to be completely overshadowed by its older brother, the ZX14R. Enter the 2013 Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R. In addition to a new color option (Pearl Flat White/Metallic Spark Black), the 2013  features are highlighted by the addition of a new electronic steering damper. This Ohlins’ based steering damper is controlled by an ECU, housed underneath the fuel tank cover and reacts to acceleration or deceleration and rear wheel speed. MSRP $14,299

T

he Streetfighter has come under fire in some circles solely because of it’s name. The term “streetfighter” refers to a style of custom bike made popular in the UK during the 80’s and 90’s. Deeper than the look and feel of the streetfighter bike class is the lifestyle associated with it. Those who indulge revel in a celebration of ingenuity and hooliganism to the nth degree. They are a critical bunch to say the least with the pedigree to back it up. So it is understandable that they have raised an eyebrow to Ducati’s artistic achievement of aesthetics and engineering that bears the title, Streetfighter. That sets the stage for what some might expect to be a showdown between the ideologists and the machine that share the same name. I am more inclined to set the stage the for an introduction, a meeting of the minds, if you will. Streetfighters, meet the 2012 Streetfighter 848. The Chassis Ducati’s use of the trellis frame has long been admired for exposing the inner workings of their bikes. They tend to leave it all on the table with nothing to hide. The trellis frame of the Streetfighter has never been more at home. The new frame design borrows from the specs of Ducati’s 848EVO superbike. However, this is not just a stripped down version of the EVO. The frame features a rake angle 18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

of 24.5 with a trail of 103mm. The seat height is 33 inches and is one of the first things noticed when you throw a leg over. The taller seating position is right in line with the ergonomics of the bike. The taller seat in unison with the higher handlebars and the placement of the foot pegs allows for an “on top of things” sense of control. Your body position is closer to a relaxed state with a slight edge of aggression that really maximizes your control of the bike’s 58.1 inch wheel base.

The aggressive lines of the Streetfighter contribute to its edge but are not completely responsible for it. From the headlight housing’s design to the compact tail section, the lines harden where its fitting without losing the sensibility of the original concepts of the bike’s capabilities... To go fast, handle well and look good while doing it. The Engine The powerhouse of the Streetfighter is the 848 SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 19

Testastretta 11 degree L twin engine. The delivery of its 132 horses (10,000rpm) is remarkably smooth. There’s no chatter or rumble. As you roll on the throttle, you feel the power gracefully ignite. From the low to the high range, the power and torque is experienced in a more direct manner. With 69 foot pounds of torque (9,500rpm), four Desmodromic valves per cylinder and a bore to stroke ratio of 94x61.2mm, the Streetfighter has that, “Can get the hell out of Dodge when you need to” factor. The engine cases are created using the Vacural Technology vacuum process that saves weight without compromising the structural integrity of the cases. In fact, this process of casting increases the strength of the case walls. The clutch and case covers are all cast in a magnesium alloy, factoring in on the bike’s dry weight of 373 pounds and substantiates Ducati’s claim that this bike has the best power to weight ratio in its class. Transmission The Streetfighter sports a wet multi plated hydraulic clutch that weighs significantly less than the infamous dry version. It also makes for a slightly quieter ride and smoother shifting. The six speed gear box features a primary drive ration 1.84 to 1 (straight cut gears) and a chain drive with 15 and 42 tooth front and rear sprockets, respectively. The bike is Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) ready. The DQS system allows for the rider to shift through the gears at open throttle without using the clutch and is available as a performance accessory. Exhausts The Streetfighter exhaust system is a 2 into 1 into 2 , 58mm to 63.5mm diameter with 1mm thick steel set up. Regulating proper fuel mapping are two lambda probes along with an electronic valve to maximize power. The mufflers are 20 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

shotgun stacked and continue the aggressive line work of the bike and allow for a nice view of that rear wheel and single sided swingarm. Suspension The Marzocchi 43mm fully adjustable front forks and a fully adjustable Sachs monoshock with progressive linkage in the rear are so elemental to the way this bike handles. The rear swing arm is 35mm longer than the 848EVO and is cast in high grade aluminum. This new swing arm gives the Streetfighter its 1475mm wheelbase. Whether riding on streets, the back roads or the track, the Streetfighter is right at home. Again, the “on top of things” seating position is really aided by the suspension set up. Wheels and Tires The 10 spoke wheels are lightweight and finished in black

22 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

aluminuim measuring 3.5 by 17 in the front and 5.5 by 17 in the rear and are matched with Pirelli Diablo Corsas. The lightweight wheels are engineered to diminish “unsprung weight” which refers to the gyroscopic effect that certain components have on handling. Controls The braking performance is provided by two 320mm semi floating discs with radially mounted 4 piston, 2 pad Brembo calipers, supported by a single 245mm 2 piston caliper in the rear. Brake and clutch are controlled by Brembo master cylinders with remote reservoirs. The Ducati Traction Control (DTC) features eight levels to choose from with level one offering the highest level of wheel spin tolerance. The DTC has its own dedicated ECU and is managed from the control on the left hand side bar handle. Consider yourself... Introduced.

Here’s the point... When you look at the theory of the Streetfighter Class of motorcycles and what has been accomplished with the Ducati Streetfighter 848, it is revealed that Ducati is offering homage to the genre. And It’s not the first time, if you look at the Ducati Monster line up. While the Streetfighter 848 may have taken a different path to reach it’s destination, based on performance and engineering, it’s earned the right to rock the monicker of Streetfighter. The machine has hooliganism running through its fuel lines. Its aggressive. It’s quick and fast... Yes there is a difference between being quick and fast and the Streetfighter is both. The engine delivers a punch that reminds you what you’re sitting on every time you twist the throttle. Its adaptive to its environment: asphalt jungle or the chicane. The performance and functionality offered really makes the Streetfighter 848 one of the most versatile motorcycles in its class.

T

he Transformers movie franchise has included a selection of the hottest vehicles in production. In the first film, Lieutenant Colonel William Lennox road an Aprilia RSV Mille R. In the Revenge of the Fallen, Mikaela road an Aprilia RS125. It wasn’t until the Dark of the Moon that motorcycles were introduced as Autobots. In the film’s opening sequence, we are introduced to Elita One and her sisters. Elita One transformed from heroic battle robot into a stunning MV Agusta F41000R. For the film, the bike itself was transformed from the stock 2007 MV Agusta F4 1000R into the custom machine that graces the screen with a paint job complete with Cybertronian script, custom seat and rather funny instructions for the stunt rider. There is something so attractive about a female rider that has her own bike. But a woman that is her own bike even if she’s a robot... Well, that’s just more than meets the eye. 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

hen kids are young they have dreams. It is far from often that these dreams ever become a reality but for the few and fortunate, it is possible. It was not that long ago, I was one of those kids and here I am living the dreams I had as a young child... Luckily. It is a scary thought at times. After finishing high school it’s almost surreal that instead of going away to college just like many of my friends, I’ll be racing. A lot of it has to do with the fact that a career as a racer is not exactly secure, especially during these times. There is so much talent. The pressure to succeed and be better than those

around you is tremendous. It can become uneasy. It’s common to hear, “You’re a kid... You don’t have anything to worry about, yet” But in some cases, there is even more to worry about. I am extremely fortunate to have the people that surround me to help me and guide me in the path to success. The one thing I do have working with me is time. I

t may always seem “Movie Star” like, even dreamy but being a racer’s girlfriend can be very difficult. Set aside the traveling, injuries, fans, pressure and not to mention the Umbrella Girls wink of an eye, Teesha Kitterman has held her own in the AMA Paddock. With her Movie Starlet looks and twinkle in her eye, she is more than she appears. I met Teesha back in 2008 and I have watched and hopefully, somewhat guided her growth into the strong young women she is now. With so few of us in the paddock we ladies do tend to stick together. The stories we could tell! One thing is certain, the paddock and your team become family and we as family defend each other like a mother bear defends her cubs. Recently engaged to racer Josh Herrin, Teesha is committing herself not only to her man but to the world of racing. SBI: What is your connection with road racing? TK: My fiancé Josh Herrin is my connection. SBI: What attracted you to the first race? TK: My hot boyfriend riding a motorcycle at 175mph, the adrenaline of watching him race

and win. SBI: How long have you been coming to the races? TK: My first time was September of 2007. That’s where I met Josh for the first time. Ever since then, I have been addicted to road racing. I love being able to say I am Josh Herrin’s number one fan! Our first race together was Daytona in 2008. I am very fortunate to say I have attended every race since then. SBI: What are some of things you do at the track? TK: My number one job is to support Josh in any way possible. Being a girlfriend/finance/wife of a racer is very unique. I have become very involved in the paddock and have established a great relationship with Yamaha and the whole team. I love being part of the mix! SBI: Would you consider this a hobby or passion for you? TK: It started off as a hobby. But now it is most certainly a passion. I think at this point I know more about motorcycles and racing than I know about fashion! SBI: What one thing would like to share with our readers that they would be surprised to know

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 49

THE GRID: Ladies of the paddock about you? TK: I’m an avid Equestrian, with an emphasis in Show Jumping. SBI: Do you find it hard being a woman surrounded by probably 98% of men at the track? TK: Not at all! I find it more difficult to be surrounded by all the umbrella girls with 20% of their clothes on! There is a lot of competition out there! SBI: Who is your favorite rider in AMA and MotoGP and why? TK: My favorite rider in the AMA is obviously Josh Herrin. I also enjoy watching Martin Cardenas. He puts on a good show (And is not too hard on the eyes! - Carries Aquino). As for MotoGP, it’s Casey Stoner. He is a great racer, fun to watch and always smiling. I idolize Casey and his wife and their relationship. Hate to see him retire! SBI: What is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to you in the Paddock? TK: Seeing Josh win the Daytona 200 and celebrating his victory. Second to that is a two up ride and riding in the pace car. SBI: What do your family and friends think of all the support you give your finance on and off the track? TK: They all think its great! They understand my commitment and support it 100% even if it means going months without seeing them. SBI: What are the pros and 50 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

cons of being a finance to a professional racer? TK: The pro is that I have been able to travel to almost every state in the US this past year going to all the races. And the only con is that am away from my family, friends and horse for long periods of time.

Racer, Umbrella Girl, Fan Zoo!” All in a good way. It’s the place to get autographs and photos with the racers. The “Hot Pit” is the part of the paddock where all the action happens.

SBI: Where do you see yourself in five years, pertaining to the racing scene? TK: In five years, I hope to see myself in the MotoGP paddock holding Josh’s first place trophies!

SBI: What one thing would you change in the series or class to make it better for the sport or fan? TK: If I could change anything about the series it would be to show the races live or at least air the races at a decent hour. It would be nice to sit down and watch the race at 7:30pm.

SBI: How would you describe the paddock to someone who has never been? TK: I would describe the paddock as a “Motorcycle, Mechanical,

SBI: What is the one word or sentence that you would sum up your feeling when your in the paddock? TK: Excitement!

Teesha not only has a long adventurous life in front of her as a racers fiancé and soon to be wife, but she also has goals for herself away from the paddock. This includes Cosmetology School with aspirations of becoming a hair dresser. Having a skill like that she would be able to relocate anywhere in the world. She also plans to continue her love of horses and advance in Show Jumping. As in the movies, the young beautiful girl meets the handsome racer and they are planning to live happily ever after... SportBikes Inc Magazine wishes Teesha and Josh all the best.

ome of my fans are aware of the great news, while others will receive it here first. June marked a very exciting milestone in my young adult life. Paula Madison, owner of the LA Sparks and Cofounder of the The Africa Channel made a big announcement in New Orleans at the National Association of Black Journalist Convention. Mrs. Madison announced to the world that The Africa Channel will field a stock car in professional auto racing. Over 3,000 national news anchors and reporters heard it first, that I will be the first African American female driver being sponsored by the network’s racing team. This was a complete surprise to the auto and motorcycle racing community. News that surprised my fellow racers, friends, family and fans. The excitement continued to grow with the announcement of me racing in the ARCA Series (Automobile Racing Club of America) during my transitional period for about a year and then... NASCAR! Yes, NASCAR! You read it correctly! Dystany Spurlock will be racing NASCAR full time in the Nationwide Series in 2014. Little me, running with the big boys, on national television in NASCAR. This was a project that my team has been working on for over a year. I was ecstatic during 58 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

the unveiling of my car that had my name on the roof! I was speechless. Feelings of gratitude, mixed with expressions of joy overcame me. Shortly after the launch, I was mobbed by reporters, tweets and FaceBook posts. I am NOT giving up motorcycle drag racing. I am currently just exploring new opportunities in my racing career. Drag racing will always be a passion of mine. Shifting the focus to racing cars doesn’t mean that I’m turning my back or quitting motorcycle drag racing. I am confident that I can handle the transition and learn everything about racing cars, while understanding the technical aspects of racing and working in conjunction with my team. I even have plans to learn how to work on my car, if the team owners permit it. I understand that my life is about to encounter new hurdles with even more responsibilities. I welcome those challenges and I am ready for those changes and new learning experiences. I love new challenges, I live for competition, and I am excited about this next chapter of my life. I will close out this season and the start of next season with several ARCA races, while preparing for the Nationwide Series mid

season 2013. I am scheduled to be racing full time in the Nationwide Series in 2014. My goals for NASCAR aren’t just racing I want to be successful. I want to pursue a position in the top 10 points standings. I have faith that I will win some races and prayerfully conquer a championship. However, the most rewarding part is to have fun and making my fans proud. Connect with Dystany...

Words: ASHON “CAPO” DICKERSON IMAGES: Meekail shaheed I told you guys and girls that it was gonna be a hot summer and that’s just what it is! I just survived racing in a heatwave in Rockingham NC. By far, this event was the hottest I have ever had the unfortunate opportunity to compete in. The track surface temp was a blistering 167 degrees, the hottest ever recorded! Are you kidding me?! it was round four of the MIRock Superbike Series Summer Sizzler and I wish I could tell you all that I won that weekend. But what I can tell you is that I did survive the weather and racing conditions that truly separate the men from the boys and true riders from the fake. It was 110 degrees at 9am! Makes you want to pack up and go home if you’re not built for the grind. If you can’t take the heat stay the fuck out the kitchen! It takes pure will and love for the game to endure those kind of brutal conditions. To take my mind off of the infernal heat, I think about one of my favorite flicks, “ICE AGE... IROCK’s Superbike Summer Sizzler at The Rock in Rockingham, NC was just that… a sizzler. Temperatures were over 100 degrees with a record track temp of a shoe melting 163 degrees! I lost a shoe sole to the Track Gods while standing too long on one spot on the scorching track. The extremely hot weather kept a lot of riders from competing but those that showed did some great racing. Rob Hunnicutt bested Ronald Proccopio to take the win in Mickey Thompson’s Pro Mod class. Rodney Williford outclassed Joey Gladstone in the finals this weekend to take the Orient Express Pro Street class. Jermey Teasley took the win from Johnny Dobrin in the DME Real Street class. Michael Rankin took first place in the Trac King Top Sportsman class.

68 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

The popular House of Speed Crazy 8’s class ended with Ron Arnold edging out Andy Baumbach for the win. Jim Shifflett fell to Jack Durant in the FBR Shop 5.60 class. Other winners for the weekend were Wardell Pinkney in Sunday’s Nitrous Express Pro ET class. Barry Pryer Sr. took the PRO ET win on Saturday. The Brock’s Performance Street ET winner for Saturday was Shayne Proctor. Barry Purnell took the Street ET win on Sunday. Racers and fans alike are looking forward to what has been billed as MIROCK’s biggest race of the year, the Fast By Gast WPGC Bike Fest, July 21-22 at Buds Creek, MD. This weekend will also feature the second annual Paint the ¼ Pink Race where the best female racers in the business duke it out all to support Breast Cancer Awareness.

Violet Stars & Happy Stunting Words and images: leah petersen T

he stunt spot... Unless you’re a stunter, those three words probably put a pretty bad taste in your mouth. Hooligans! Trespassing, using their motorbikes in an unorthodox fashion! Wreaking havoc and generally contributing nothing to society! As a person who is both educated and free of criminal history, who also spends upwards of three hours a day at these questionable locales, I would like to give you my take on the whole ordeal. There is no debating the fact that stunting attracts a colorful, unique crowd. Honestly, most stunters are the type of people who didn’t really fit in anywhere else. Sports with referees and rules normally don’t resonate. So stunting, in all its unsanctioned glory is an appealing way to pass the time, gain a skill and make some new friends. I personally feel the glamor

80 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and awe initially attracts people to the sport, but often that changes for people who become dedicated stunt riders. The overhead of setting up a stuntbike, getting to the spot and clutching up your first real wheelie is incredible. It’s no small feat. It takes dedication, sacrifice and when all that work pays off and you’re finally just floating through the air on one wheel... That reward becomes the true reason most people spend every free second at the stunt spot. Maybe it’s not society approved, but it sure feels like a sense of accomplishment to those who practice hard and earn real skills. Stunting is in an odd limbo of legitimacy. While people can make a living off the sport, it’s nearly impossible to find a legal place to practice. Renting a track is off the table due to insurance prices, additionally most tracks wouldn’t allow stunting’s

brutal effects on their surfaces. Purchasing land in any city in America is entirely too expensive and the cost of pouring concrete adds up faster than any stunters savings ever will allow. As a result, stunters have done what most developing subcultures have: found an unused part of our existing environment and refactored it to work for their needs. Stunters don’t really need a lot: most any good flat surface in an area out of the sight and ear shot of society will do the trick. After the first successful session, without getting kicked out, this random location will change from an abandoned parking lot to a sacred stunt spot. While sacred might sound like a strong word, for a stunter a good spot is nothing less. A good spot means the opportunity to ride regularly and simply do what they love without being hassled. Most everyone I have ridden

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 81

The Rev LIMITER: VIOLET STARS... with, at one time or another has told me they ride because it keeps them out of trouble. Sure stunting won’t ever find a cure for cancer, but it is teaching real people about determination, hard work and the rewards that follow every day. I’ve seen amazing social dynamics at stunt spots around the world, this is a sport people can relate to and really use to transform their lives. The stunt spot is what lets this all happen. It’s our area to congregate, to learn and to progress. Like with anything, the environment shapes the activity and the “stunt spot” really plays a role in how people act while stunting, who comes to spectate and what type of personalities

82 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

it appeals to. For example, our current spot is host to a bum who records video every night, for what I don’t know, but he seems to enjoy it. We have regular families who stay for hours to cheer us on, bike nights cruise through and car racers sometimes meet up in the back of the lot. Everyone brings their lawn chairs, food and their families to ride, socialize and share. After a while, any spot can turn into a real community, with sincere friends and people you can count on to help you out in life. Whether you need a motorcycle pulled off of you after a crash or an extra bottle of water, someone will have your back.

I feel my generation struggles with finding a place in this world, which fuels my support of stunt spots. From the changing family dynamic in America, to the crumbling economy leading the shaky employment experiences, people are always looking for a place to belong and feel comfortable. I’ve written before about the transcending powers of motorcycles, but the power of the stunt spot is equally as strong. Without a spot, we would have no

opportunity to build our subculture and learn skills in the first place. No matter how seemingly shabby a deserted industrial parking lot is, filled with the right group of riders it can change into a holy, transformational place. While not everyone will jive with stunt riding, thinking about it from a community encouraging viewpoint can perhaps allow other motorcyclists to at least understand the benefits.

MOTO TECH Words: Mark Rozemo Image: Courtesy of Motion Pro

ASK THE PRO WRENCH Words: Thomas Campion IMAGES: Courtesy of Motion Pro Q:

I ride both street and track. What is the best PSI setting for my tires and what’s the best way to check them?

A:

Tire pressure is super important. The best quality tire gauge you can afford will help monitor it. I recommend Motion Pro’s digital gauge because it’s very accurate. As far as the correct tire pressure, street

100 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and track are very different not to mention which types of tires you have. Just to point out two examples, a Pirelli as a soft tire carcass which you use more pressure in to hold the tire up. Where Dunlop uses a stiffer carcass so you run a lower pressure. I can’t give you a pressure that

is great in both situations. Riding street you typically run more pressure to limit tire wear and support the tire for riding two up. If I’m forced to give a pressure, I would say you’re safe for the street at 32PSI in the front and 35PSI in the rear. For the track its a whole new ball game. I’ll give you a range of tire pressure for this since different

“S

treet and track are very different when setting tire pressure.”

tracks and compounds come into play. Also, I’m going to use Dunlop as an example since that is the spec tire for AMA racing. The Front should be around 32 to 35PSI and the rear should be between 22 to 24PSI. These pressures should be at temp so you either need tire warmers or go out for a lap to heat them up and come in and set pressures. Now I’m going give you a few pointers for what I take into

consideration while setting tire pressures. I start off by setting the pressure with the tires cold. I put the tire warmers on then I bleed the PSI down as it rises with the raised tire temp. As the tire heats up the pressure will rise because of the moisture in the air. The tire usually gets up to temp within 45 to 60 minutes. Once at temp, I set the pressures. For example: at Barber, if I wanted the front pressure to be at 32PSI on track, then off the warmer I set it at 31PSI. Compensating for a

1PSI rise in pressure from warmer to track. With the rear, if I want 24PSI I needed to set pressure off warmer at 20PSI, compensating for a 4PSI rise in the rear from warmer to track. I know this all sounds a little complicated but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find it pretty simple.

The Balance of Braking words: Eric wood images: Brian Nitto

U

nderstanding the proper use of the brakes is a key for any rider. When starting to ride, many new riders are actually afraid to use the front brake with any kind of force. However, the front brake is the primary mechanism to stop the motorcycle. As the motorcycle slows down, especially from a high speed, weight is always transferred to the front wheel. Since traction is directly related

to the amount of weight pushing the tire into the ground, it stands to reason that as braking force increases more and more, it is increasingly important to use the front brake to do the majority of the stopping. As weight is transferred to the front tire it is naturally shifted away from the rear tire, causing the rear brake to lock up with increasingly less pressure. As many riders figure out quickly, the key to being able to use full front brake pressure is allowing the weight transfer to actually occur before ramping up the lever pressure to a maximum. Front braking is broken into two stages: Apply the brake, then brake. Once the suspension of the bike has settled and the front contact patch is fully spread out, it is then time to really brake. The limit for brake pressure is no longer is the adhesion limit of the front tire, it is instead the amount of lever pressure that will lift the rear tire off the ground. We often see riders with little or no weight on the rear tire in the major portion of the braking zone when watching AMA or World Superbike. The back tire is merely floating on the ground, often swaying back and forth as the riders battle on the way in to the corners. If this is what exemplifies maximum braking, what good is the rear brake in the major portion of the braking zone? The answer, of course, is none. The rear brake is not available to create any stopping power until weight is transferred back onto

it late in the corner. However, by this time most track day riders and club racers have scrubbed off a majority of their speed and are now fully focused on initiating the corner. As the motorcycle carves in towards the apex and increases in lean angle, more experienced riders will typically trail in with the front brake using an ever-diminishing amount of effort. This trail braking allows for increased control on the entrance, extends the braking zone deeper into the corner, and typically is fully released in conjunction with the major turn effort just prior to the apex. With this said, where does the rear brake, so often used on the street, fit in? The honest answer is that for most track riders it does not. Street riding, which does not, and should not, typically require maximum front brake pressure, leaves the weight balance of the motorcycle less biased towards the front wheel and allows for a reasonable amount of rear brake pressure. However, at race speeds, the braking force is significantly increased and the rear brake is not useful for a majority of the zone. In the late corner entrance where there is finally some weight back on the rear tire, most riders again do not have the available attention to divert to modulating the rear brake. This is what I often call a last 5% activity. It is for those few riders that can comfortably utilize the other 95% of their available grip and attention and are looking for that last little extra advantage.

improve your skills: The Balance... I have interviewed riders who have been on the podium at AMA nationals who have told me that they got there without ever touching the rear brake. However, certain top expert club racers, several AMA riders and many WSB/ MotoGP riders use the rear brake regularly. As riders progress to the highest levels, many will tell you that they cannot ride without it. When 500GP Mick Doohan was injured and lost the ability to activate the rear brake with his right foot, Honda came up with a system that allowed him to use his right hand and the thumb brake craze was started. To help understand some of why this was so important to a world champion like Doohan, we will look at a few instances where riders use the rear brake on the racetrack. We will start with some intermediate skill level cases and discuss a few advanced moves in the end. The most basic reason for using the rear brake is one that I experienced personally early in my racing career. The reason to use the rear brake in this case was that the front brake was simply not strong enough. My first racing adventure was on a vintage BSA, and I could squeeze that front brake with all of my might with no concern of ever lifting the rear wheel off the ground. As a result, the rear brake became a valuable tool in stopping this machine efficiently as possible. In fact, if I had thought it would help I would have dragged both heels like Fred Flintstone as well... I considered this at one point. Another reason that riders 106 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

commonly use the rear brake is to prevent a bike from starting a wheelie over the crest of a hill. By gently applying the rear brake, riders create a torque that pushes the front wheel into the ground and combats the tendency of the front wheel to rise over the hill. Although this is effective, I advise students to first do all that they can to lower their center of gravity as this will help accomplish the same thing without slowing the bike down. However, there are certain places such as the front straight of Road America where sometimes body position is not enough and a light touch on the rear brake can help a rider maintain control. As we progress to more advanced topics, this same principle can be used to control the violent acceleration of a Superbike out of a slow corner. Again, assuming that a rider has done all that is possible with body position, the rear brake can be used to keep the front end of a very powerful motorcycle on the ground when accelerating hard out of a slow corner such as the final turn at Laguna Seca. Highly skilled riders can even use the rear brake to help control wheel spin on the drive out of a corner in the same fashion. We will wrap up with a discussion of two of the ways the rear brake can be used during the brake entrance, both of which are for advanced riders. First, since lowering the center of gravity on the way into the corner makes a motorcycle less likely to lift the rear tire off the ground, some riders will lightly apply the rear brake just prior to squeezing the front brake

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 107

improve your skills: The Balance... in an effort to lower the overall stance of the motorcycle. This allows harder initial application of the front brake, but again, this is a very advanced technique. Second, as riders trail off the front brake at the end of the braking zone, some top pilots will apply the rear brake in order to transfer weight to the front tire and tighten up the corner. Since the front tire is often already very near the limit at this point, the rear brake is sometimes the best option to scrub that little bit of extra speed and give the front tire a fraction of extra grip to get up inside another rider. This article covered a large spectrum of braking techniques. The most important thing to take from this article is the insight as to why riders use both the front and rear brakes when they do. These case studies will help us better understand what is happening out on the track and perhaps help us prevent making our own mistakes in the future. When we really understand the physics behind our actions, we tend to make more intelligent decisions and ride with more confidence. Riders should never attempt the advanced techniques described here on the street but should instead only experiment with these new ideas on the track while there is access to top expert instruction. There is always more to learn, and that is part of what makes this sport so great. Until next time... Ride fast, ride safe!

THE HIT

LIST

Do you ever wonder what MOVIES your fellow riders are watching when they are not on the bike? We do... so we decided to ask them.

Michael Lawless! What’s on your hit list?

“Faster” gives brilliant in depth coverage of the last season of the 2 stroke era and the first season of the 4 strokes. How can you not love a movie that has two vastly different machines and yet the same champion. Win. “Fastest” is the follow up to “Faster” and it triumphantly documents another MotoGP season that saw the entrance of the too early taken Marco Simoncelli. If you want to ride fast, have ridden fast, or can think of nothing but going fast, these two are must owns. “Closer to the Edge 3D” features intense coverage of the Isle of Man and the men who dare race there on real roads! Hardcore racing through the streets of an island off the coast of Ireland. Between 1907 and 2009 there have been 237 deaths racing the courses of the Isle of Man which makes the footage of this film even more impressive. To ride the line and not over it is the difference between a trophy and death. “Ducati – A Story of Passion.” If you do not own a Ducati you will certainly want to after watching this movie which gives a rare behind-the-scenes look at the history and mystery of the Italian company.

FRICTION ZONE: I AM Motorcycle

T

he current sensationalism of the motorcycle club lifestyle can be seen everywhere in today’s pop culture and social media saturated culture. You don’t have to venture far from your couch... there are a number of shows, some popular and some not, that attempt to portray the club life. Some attempts are more effective than others and the affects can be observed at the local bike night. Have you noticed how many new clubs have popped up on the set in recent years or how many new riders have appeared, as if over night? I get it. It’s a trend... to those that just got here. For those among us that have been here and remain here, that have been through the ups and downs of the culture, the life is not a choice. It is in the bloodline. It is a responsibility. It is a destiny. Enter Dan Tibbs. Tibbs is a designer, a visionary and a motorcycle historian. Recently added to his list of titles is film maker. His project is a documentary that delves into the untold story of the true Urban Biker in their every so natural environment. SBI: The documentary is journey into the history of the black motorcyclists. What sparked the desire to create it? DT: I do research every year for the Nexxunlimited Clothing Company. I research the history of motorcycle apparel and in doing the research I didn't see any pictures of African Americans on motorcycles, like we did not ride. Having a conversation with my mother one day she revealed to me that my great grandfather rode motorcycles in the late 1930's into the 1940's. This really started to peak my interest and at that time I started to use the contacts that I had in the industry to talk to the oldest African Americans about the history. I started doing this in 2006. I did my first museum exhibition on the history of African American bikers at the African American Museum of Nassau County in May 2009 with pictures, videos, movies and motorcycles. Harley Davidson asked to be part of the second exhibition I did at the 40/40 club. We also put together the short film Brothers Of The Bike. This was the spring board for some major 116 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

companies to start paying attention to the history of African Americans. SBI: Is this your first time in the director’s chair? DT: Yes. SBI: What have you learned while making this film? DT: I've learned that African Americans have a rich history in motorcycling in America. Benny Hardy and Cliff Vauhn, the two black men that are responsible for the two motorcycles that were featured in the movie Easy Rider: Captain America and Billy's Bike were the biggest piece of history for me. I've also learned about William B. Johnson, the first African American to own a Harley Davidson Dealership that was located in upstate New York in 1920. While doing interviews, I discovered how rich our heritage is and that it SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 117

FRICTION ZONE: I AM MOTORCYCLE goes back generations. These are just a few of the unknown and there are many more stories that I'm still following. It's like a bouncing ball. SBI: What have you learned about your self from your research? DT: That I am proud to pay homage to those that came before me and that what I do and how I live is because of them. SBI: Why do you think this part of history hasn’t been told? DT: I don't want to be political. I just want to get the information out there. I feel it is my duty and I am proud to be part of a selected few that will tell the story of the African American biker... or the urban biker because we cannot forget about our Spanish brothers. SBI: Do you feel that it was being hidden or overshadowed by mainstream media’s perception of bikers? DT: I don’t think they looked for it. SBI: Why is the information contained in the film so vital to the culture? DT: It gives us a history that we can be proud of, people to be inspired by and it shows how much we are a part of the American motorcycle history. It is needed! SBI: What are your thoughts on the way that hollywood has portrayed the black biker in film and television? DT: Biker Boyz was cool, for the most part. That's the only movie I know that touches on the subject. Other than that, music videos seems to do a good job. SBI: There have been movies or shows that have sensationalized the biker lifestyle and spawned a sea of “posers”. I’m sure that you’ve come across some of them... What do you say to them? Do you call them out? Do you even acknowledge them? DT: It Is what it is! If its about motorcycles, its all love. Just entertainment. You have good movies and bad movies. That’s life. 118 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

SBI: What is your definition of a real biker? DT: If you ride a motorcycle, you are a real biker. Too many people try to impose their perception of what real bikers are: you should be a tough guy or you should follow these rules or you should ride like this. The deal is this: If you ride a motorcycle, you are a real biker. SBI: Your thoughts on the 1% verus the 99% lifestyles? DT: To many politics for me I just want to ride a hot bike with no Rules! You got guys putting rules on shirts and you can go here but you cant go there, you can talk to them but not them... Crazy. As a people, we already have so many obstacles in the way. Why should we put more. I'm already 1% every time I get pulled over by the police or looked over for that position or put in jail for something I didn't do or shot for wearing a hoodie.

SBI: When will I AM MOTORCYCLE be released to the public? DT: Very soon. We are working! We have to get an interview with you, Allan. You are one of the movers and shakers in the industry. I have said it before, I am proud to know you! Tibbs is very dedicated to bringing this culturally rich piece of American history to the masses. And it is needed. A documentary that sets the record straight and lets every biker, regardless of race, color or creed know what time it is.

BRIAN NITTO SBI STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER: The Devil Wears Prada. I think Meryl Streep is such a well diversified actress but her downfall, you'll never see her on any motorcycle in any of her movies. I think the screen writers could have worked on something to get her sitting on something that suits the movie’s them. Another movie is SafeHouse with Denzel Washington. You saw plenty of car chases. No bikes. WTF? Denzel, get on a bike! I’ve seen you on a train, in a car, soon to be a pilot in a new movie coming out. Get on a bike already. Laurence Fishburne has done it. Step it up. Denzel always plays a great badass. Get him a sportbike already!

Crazy, Stupid, Love. I will never see this movie. I have no frame of reference except that my wife says she wants to see this; sure sign it's a chick flick and I will want to stab my eyes when I am forced to watch it. Just the title alone screams "Help me!" Throw a couple of sportbike scenes in the mix and you won't have to drag your boyfriends to the theater or have issues renting it. Adding motorcycle scenes to any movie is like bacon. Everybody likes bacon, even some vegans like bacon. Bacon tastes great on everything. I just had a bacon sandwich with a side order of bacon on it. It works. Have you ever heard from a guy that a movie had "too many bike scenes" in a movie. No. Never. End of story.

ASHON CAPO DICKERSON SBI DRAG RACING EDITOR: A character I would have loved to see riding a motorcycle would have been Denzel Washinton in Training Day. That would have been better than him riding through L.A in that low rider. I would love to see more movies incorporate our culture. Riders and enthusiast are some of the coolest people on the planet and attract the most attention!

LEAH PETERSEN SBI STAFF WRITER: Escape From New York. Not including a motorcycle in this film really seemed like a lost opportunity. I mean, you've got the classic “awesome” formula: criminal turned hero with eye patch and a snake tattoo, an epic rescue mission and no… motorcycle? What? Maybe, just maybe, it was a sleeper intellectual film. By removing the motorcycle from the equation, audiences subconsciously can’t

126 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

accept the film and then keep circling back and thinking about it. Hmmmmm. If you need closure you can check out “Escape from LA” which DOES include motorcycles.

Costco… but they didn’t touch on what motorcycles would become with moronic engineers. Maybe they would have three wheels, oh wait, people have done that already.

Idiocracy. This movie explores what the future would be like if dumb people procreated so much they became the majority. Disposable pants that you take from a dispenser on your wall each morning, law degrees earned at

Inglorious Bastards. Two words: German sidecars. What sick twisted things would happen if Tarantino wrote a scene which revolved around some motorcycles with German sidecars? I’d like to know.

Randy Nedescu BELLISSIMOTO: National Lampoon’s Family Vacation. Griswald would have been hilarious on a motorcycle. Titanic because chick flicks suck ass and a video of a bike doing anything would have been better. The girl next door because a motorcycle would have made her that much hotter.

JEFF DUZZNY WHEELIETEACH: Bullitt. Classic! real life racing enthusiast Steve McQueen barrels after bad guys on the streets of San Francisco in an epically cool 1968 Ford Mustang. In a cityscape that gets most drivers nervous for its ups and downs, San Francisco proves the ultimate car chase backdrop. Lieutenant Frank Bullitt is not only one of the coolest cops of all time, he

proves to be one of the best wheelmen we've ever seen. Steve McQueen was also a motorcycle enthusiast and changing the mustang in for a current sportbike or motard would have made the chase scenes in the movie that much more interesting. smokey and the bandit with Jerry Reed driving a semi filled with beer and Burt Reynolds

in a T Top 1977 Trans Am which became one of the hottest selling cars of the year being used as a interceptor car to Sheriff Bufford T. Justice. The chase scenes are magnificent and from the scene of the car rolling out the back of the semi to the end burn out and that famous Reynolds laugh... it would have been awesome on a sportbike. Ronin. Robert de Niro's performance treats the viewers to chase scenes with sport sedans such as a BMW M5, Peugeot 406 and perhaps most famously, an Audi S8. Few actors can capture the mixture of terror and exhilaration in a car chase quite like De Niro, while Jean Reno is the only actor who could make driving a Peugeot an exercise in steely manhood all of which would have been that much more exciting on a sportbike.

DYSTANY SPURLOCK SBI STAFF WRITER: Despicable Me is one of my favorite movies. Yes, I know it’s a kid’s movie but I think that the movie would have been ten times cooler if all of the minions would have had motorcycles. They’re already weird looking. Now imagine those yellow one eyed and two eyed little creatures riding around trying to save the day on motorcycles.

Kevin Hart Laugh at my Pain. Kevin Hart always picks on his height. Now picture him driving up on stage on a sportbike, stock height and then putting his feet down. He joked on how he sits in a chair his feet sometimes swings back and fourth, unable to touch the ground. So him not being able to put his feet down flat on the ground while on a bike would be hilarious!

BRICE COOPER AMA PRO XR1200 SERIES: Willy Wonka. Imagine if the good in the end villain, Slugworth rode a bad as Velocette, or Brough Superior! Wicked and stylish. Boom! Alladin. Do you know how many babes he could pull on a Panigale instead of that lame ass rug with wings! Imagine a Princess Tammy, Trista, Jasmine, and BIanca! Snap, son! Drive. One of the best counterculture films of all times and no bikes? WTF? Perfect scene, the one where Norton and Pitt are walking along a city street bashing in the windshields and headlights of "trendy" cars. They come up to a road bike, something like a dirty, well ridden Triumph. They look at each other, pause, then move past without touching it out of respect.

LEON BRITTAIN

SBI CREATIVE SUPERVISOR: Dukes of Hazzard I know the whole premise of the Dukes of Hazzard centers around two good 'ol boys never meaning any harm constantly evading the bad and "good" guys with the help of their beloved Dodge Charger, the "General Lee". But once, wouldn't it have been cool to see a dirt bike version of the General Lee. After all, you live on farm with tons of land. You're constantly chasing and getting chased on dirt roads and there's always a bridge that's been washed out or a barn that begs to be jumped. Just imagine what that element would've done for the 2005 made

for film version of the Dukes of Hazzard Bo and Luke being chased through Hazzard County leaping over gorges and creeks, Rickey Carmichael style. All the while wearing the proper safety gear. Better yet, can't you see a mysterious rider performing incredible two wheel acrobatics sending Roscoe P. Coltrane plummeting into a ditch. This mystery rider pulls up next to the bewildered Roscoe, removes the helmet to unveil cascading locks waving in the wind revealing this confident allusive rider is the sexy and sassy Daisy Duke. Could Seth and Evan have been just as Superbad on two factory green Kawasaki Ninjas? In The Hangover, would Alan have ridden a Vespa right next to Phil on his R6? I have a funny feeling Stu was no stranger to BMW touring motorcycles.

In Get Him To the Greek, would Aldous Show ride an MV Agusta F4RR? How about Aaron Green on a Triumph? It should go without saying that Sergio Roma would ride nothing but a Ducati, right? Why in movies like The Italian Job do bad guys ride BMWs when everyone knows that if you really are a bad em effer, you ride a satin black Ducati with a booming Termignoni exhaust. I

magine you are Nobby Clark and one day you are notified by the American Motorcyclist Association that they want you in their elite Hall of Fame. The AMA notified the press. Motorcycle publications are jumping all over the story that “Nobby Clark is being inducted into the Hall of Fame...” I’m sure Nobby felt quite proud of the nomination and of his accomplishments. Now, let’s fast forward two weeks. The AMA rescinds their approval. One minute he’s an honored guest and the next minute, he’s treated like riffraff. First the AMA brings up your stellar accomplishments and the next you find your name slandered in the press. How does this happen with a group that’s hardly fly by night. They’re the AMA for Pete’s sake! The amazing part of all of this is that Nobby never asked for the nomination, never asked for the award and never asked for his life to be broadcast all over the internet. It was reported that Nobby’s criminal case played a role in the AMA rescinding the pending induction into the Hall of Fame but a few others in the two wheeled community have since pointed out that several Hall of Famers also have criminal records. So when the “criminal case” story wouldn’t hold water the AMA next said that they had an error in the balloting process and to keep the integrity of the

process intact they are forced to rescind Nobby’s induction. I am sure that Mitt Romney and President Obama are each hoping the AMA conducts the balloting process for the November elections… At this point in the story, I find it hard to believe that the AMA could be so callous and so irresponsible to not only let the error happen but to express no remorse or regret over the fact they have dragged an honest man’s name through the mud. I repeat, he did not ask for any awards or accolades. This smells an awful lot like some big wig throwing some considerable weight around the room as opposed to an integrity filled balloting process. In the meantime several Hall of Fame members have since returned their medals to the AMA and have expressly asked to be removed from the ranks because of the dog’s breakfast the AMA has made over Nobby Clark’s induction. Members such as Dave Despain, Ed Fisher, and several others have been more than happy to turn in their medals in the name of integrity. Perhaps they should also send the AMA a dictionary so the powers that be can understand the meaning of a word before they go hurling it about in the press. After all the hoopla around the issue just who is Nobby Clark? He may be one of the winningest tuners of all time. s I travel through Amsterdam and Rotterdam, I realize the effects of motorbikes not just here, but all over Europe. Just think of all the great films made here with these tight curvy streets and history at every turn that could have been even more amazing had there been motorcycles in them. I could name a few JAMES BOND movies that could use a great motorcycle chase scene in them. How about if DIRTY DOZEN had Clint Eastwood on a motorcycle doing damage or DIRTY HARRY? What about GREEN ZONE with bikes roaming all over the desert hunting weapons of mass destruction? The list could go on and on. The thought of your favorite actor piloting motorcycles on the big screens is just a glimpse of what could be the future of films. This is our movie issue. Film is topic dear to my heart because I’m not just an actor, I’m a filmmaker as well. The movie going audiences are longing for a great bike movie. I personally want to be the one that brings us an extremely real biker film. I am working diligently to make this vision a reality. This bike lifestyle is like no other and has

earned its place in the big picture.

RS One PIECE LEATHER SUIT

Allan Lane Its no big secret that I have an affinity for the color black, or lack of color... So when Rev’It did a limited run on their RS suit in all black, I had to have it. I’ve always felt that if you were buying a suit off the rack, you were subject to the colors that the manufacturers produce and lets be honest, there was a time when some of those color schemes were God awful! So short of purchasing a custom suit, I would have been at the mercy of the rack. But the RS was made available for a short time in all black and I snatched one up. The suit broke in easy thanks to the appropriately placed stretch panels. The padding and armor didn’t hinder the comfort level and with a back protector on, the RS fit like a glove. I’ve been riding track since 2005 and I can honestly say this is the only suit that I have ever owned. I bought this suit in 2005 and it still holds up. It even seems to fit even better no than ever before. I don’t know if I attribute that my weight loss or to the leather taking shape. Only recently has it began to show signs of wear and tear, but nothing that a quick stitch can’t handle. http://revitusa.com Rating: 6 (out of 6)
