FROM THE EDITOR
FIRST MOTO-WORLD PROBLEMS I realize that I live a privileged moto-life. It's not that it just comes with the job of being a publisher and editor and chief. I believe that the universe is genuinely looking out for the cookout. Pirelli hosts an annual VIP track day at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca on the Monday following the US round of WorldSBK. I've been fortunate to receive an invitation and participate for the last few years. To say that it is one of the top three highlights of my year is an understatement. But there is a problem. The event is only for one day. I know, first moto-world problems. Boohoo for me. In all seriousness, most track riders will tell you that riding a circuit and riding a circuit well are two different things. The more that you ride a circuit, the more proficient you will become at it. I don't have to say that I am just happy to be out there, even if it is only for one day a year. But I would love to spend a few days at the track for several weekends over the course of the year. For me, the first couple of sessions at Laguna are spent refamiliarizing myself with the track layout. Usually, things start to come together for me the first session after lunch. 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
Something was different for me this year, however. Randy Mamola, that's right... the Legend, Randy Mamola and his son Dakota were hanging out in the paddock. This is why I know that the universe looks out for me. Randy asked me how it was going out there for me. I expressed my lamentations to him about wanting more time, refamiliarizing myself with the track, etc. Sidebar, that fact that I was semi-complaining to Randy Mamola about riding Laguna Seca, is the epitome of first motoworld problems. Then Randy offered me a bit of advice, a pro tip if you will. He said, "The track doesn't change... It's you that changes." It didn't matter that I only rode this circuit once a year. Laguna Seca didn't change. The track layout remains the same. I just had to ride it. In other words, Randy Mamola just told me to quit bitching, shut the hell up, and go get some! That's exactly what I did and had one of the best track afternoons in my life. Thanks, Randy! Special thanks to Pirelli for hosting the VIP track day, Trackdayz for the coaching, and Ducati North America for the ride. I'll see you next year. Best, Allan allan@sportbikesincmag.com

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS HARLEY LOOKS TO THE FUTURE WITH THE ALL-NEW LIVEWIRE Harley Davidson has recently released the full data specifications for the all-new electric motorcycle, the 2020 LiveWire. While Harley Davidson traditionalists may be struggling with the transition of brand direction, Harley is focused on the goal of establishing themselves as a leader in the electric motorcycle sector. The 2020 LiveWire does look the part. The bike has a reserved futuristic aesthetic and is not uneasy on the eyes. It's attractive and approachable, crossing the border of being sporty and classical with clean and simple lines. Equipped with a 12.8-volt lithium-ion battery (24 Wh, 120 A), the LiveWire can travel a range of 146 miles (city), and 70 miles (highway, at a sustained speed of 70mph), on a full charge. To achieve a full charge, it will take 12.5 hours utilizing the AC wall charger, or 1 hour if you use the DC fast charger. At the heart of the LiveWire is the new Revelation engine that produces 86 footpounds of torque and 105 horses, with a claimed acceleration rate of 0 to 60, in 3 seconds. Housed in a cast aluminum frame and swingarm, the motor's performance capabilities are enhanced by its SHOWA suspension set up. On the front end of the LiveWire, you'll find 43mm inverted, big piston, fully adjustable forks. On the back end, there is a fully adjustable Balance Free Rear Cushion Lite SHOWA shock. Highlighted by BlueTooth options for your smart device, a USB charger, and a 4.3 inch TFT color display data center, the LiveWire is loaded with rider-friendly features. There are seven ride modes: sport, road, range, and rain, and three customizable modes. Most notable is the Reflex Defensive Rider System. The system is composed of three separate functions: 18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
ABS, Traction Control and Drag Torque Slip Control. These functions work in harmony with each other to offer a premium ride experience. "Riders should expect an all-new, all-electric motorcycle that will deliver an exhilarating, high-performance motorcycling experience infused with a new level of technology, and
the premium looks and feel of a HarleyDavidson product. The LiveWire is the first of a broad portfolio of electric vehicles from Harley-Davidson that will deliver transformative two-wheel experiences at price points from a few thousand dollars to the $29,799 MSRP of the 2020 LiveWire." - Joe Gustafson, Harley Davidson Public Relations Lead. THE FIRST RIDE: INDIAN'S FTR 1200 S
I have to admit...
I am pleasantly surprised by Indian's FTR 1200 S. It's not that I was expecting less from the bike, but this model is particularly impressive. Understanding how this bike became a production model is great in itself. Racing is part of the FTR 1200 S' DNA, and winning is in its blood. My evaluation began in California via the canyons and hills of Malibu, followed by a spirited jaunt through Venice and Los Angeles. Before throwing a leg over, I took a moment for a walk around to familiarize myself with what would be my "office" for the next few hundred miles. To begin, it's design is directly derivative from Indian's race bike, the FTR 750, the bike that has been kicking ass in the American Flat Track series for the last two years. The trellis frame and swingarm not only expose the 1203cc V-twin engine but also shaves a few pounds, bringing the total wet weight to 518 pounds. The suspension is composed of 43mm front forks and a rear Sachs piggyback suspension, both of which are fully adjustable. That stacked Akrapovic 2 - 1 - 2 exhaust pipe gives a major bump in points for both style and performance. Other elements of race-inspired style include the Pro Taper handlebar and the Brembo brake set up. On the front end, you'll find a Brembo master brake cylinder, and dual 320mm rotors kitted with Brembo 4 piston calipers. The rear braking 24 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019

system is a single 265mm rotor, equipped with a Brembo 2 piston caliper. The FTR1200 S looks taller than it is. With a seat height of 33.1 inches, I was flatfooted and comfortable in the saddle. The ergonomics were on point as all of the controls were well within my reach. I did not have to extend myself over, nor did I feel bunched up. When I turned her on, I was greeted by a brilliant Polaris Ride Command equipped LCD touchscreen dash. Via the dash center, you can access a number of settings and data: gauge cluster, smart device BlueTooth connectivity, GPS, ride modes, etc. The data center has three menu buttons to the left of the screen for scrolling and menu selection purposes and USB port to charge and connect your smart device directly. Additionally, you'll find a joystick on the left-hand controls, and a toggle switch on the right side controls for accessing menus while in motion. There are three ride modes: Rain, Standard, and Sport. The modes work in harmony with FTR's ABS, traction control, lean angle sensor to provide you with the appropriate amount of output and assists for a number of riding conditions. This is an excellent spot to mention that the FTR is a hooligan's dream. The dimensions of the bike in addition to snappy, but manageable, torque makes it super wheelie friendly. Thus, Indian has provided wheelie mitigation control. Riding out, I'm comfortable and stable on the FTR. I have limited dirt bike experience and have done a moderate amount of flat track riding. Riding a bike that was birthed in the dirt and designed for the oval, through the streets of Venice en route to the canyons took a few blocks to find my feel and sweet spot. Once achieved, the appreciation for the bikes suspension set up was almost immediate. Without adjusting the front or rear, the FTR seemed just fine hauling my big ass around Venice before hitting the 101 for a bit of JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 27

THE FIRST RIDE: INDIAN'S FTR 1200 S freeway riding. This pre-route, before hitting the main route, has always afforded me a chance to get to know the bike before we get to the business section of the day. Riding through the blocks with a few corners and onto the high, the FTR makes for a great commuter and would be right at home in any urban setting. When I hit the highway and rolled on the throttle, the response from the engine was progressively aggressive. It wasn't out of control, but it would let loose it you let it. But the highway is not the FTR 's realm. Packing an ever-ready 123 horses and a torque output of 87 foot-pounds, the FTR 1200 S is a canyon carver. Turning off the 101 and heading up into the hills, the FTR was ready to play. The stability and confidence, paired with the nimble agility, reminded of my younger years as I ripped about the streets of Philly on my GT Pro Performer BMX pedal bike. This was me making the "big man, little bike" theory come together in a realworld application. The FTR's exceptional balance comes from its low center of gravity. This was achieved by the placement of the 3.4-gallon capacity fuel tank directly beneath the saddle. The lower center of gravity makes stability and handling effortless. It was an absolute blast diving into tight blind turns that opened into straights before dipping into a sweeper that brought you around. As I rolled on the responsive throttle, armed with the confidence of the ABS, traction and lean stability controls, the FTR's fourth and overall mode was realized: the mode of fun. There is no way that any rider could ride the FTR and not have a cheesy grin sweep across their face. And that throaty Akrapovic pipe only sweetens the enjoyment. The bike sounds like and is performing like it is having the time of its life. Indian got so many things right with the FTR 1200S that the bar for the brand is now raised. I'm hard-pressed to find something on the bike that I would modify. With that being said, I would like to experience the FTR 1200 S on a set of sport performance tires instead of the OEM equipped 30 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019

While I can not confirm or deny the FTR's curb hopping or stair blasting abilities, I can say that, as a professional, curbs and stairs are not an issue. As I stated, the FTR 1200 S is the stuff that hooligans dream of. DT3-R radials. It rides the fine line between tracker and motard, but with the appropriate set of rubber, it could blend that line, splendidly. A few weeks after my initial ride with the FTR through Venice, Malibu and Los Angeles, Indian provided me with an FTR 1200 S to rip around on the streets and back roads of Philadelphia. With familiar roads at my beck and call, the FTR 1200 S' overall presence and performance did not disappoint. Traffic? What traffic? Even in stop and go scenarios, the FTR maintained its fun factor. While I can not confirm or deny the FTR's curb hopping or stair blasting abilities, I can say that, as a professional, curbs and stairs are not an issue. As I stated, the FTR 1200 S is the stuff that hooligans dream of. The Indian FTR 1200 S is going to surprise a great number of people with its performance features and rider-friendly components. A racewinning inspired production model that has adopted the proper bits makes the FTR 1200 S more than just another Indian. JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 35

MARCO MELANDRI ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT
The former 250cc World Champion and MotoGP race winner, Marco Melandri has stated that he plans to retire from racing following the conclusion of the 2019 FIM Superbike World Championship's final round in Qatar. The 36 years old Italian first competed in the 125cc class in 1997. In 2002, Melandri was crowned the 250cc Class World Champion. In 2003, Melandri moved up to the premier class, where he remained for several years, earning several races wins. His most successful year was in 2005 when he finished second in points, behind Valentino Rossi. In 2011, he transitioned to the WorldSBK Championship where he has won 22 races with an overall podium total of 75. "The decision to retire was a very difficult one for me to make. I'd been thinking about it for some time and, before the Imola race, I finally decided to call it a day at the end of the 2019 season. I'm still competitive, and I think it's better to stop at this point, while I still enjoy racing, rather 38 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
than waiting until the enjoyment and the results are more difficult to achieve. Since making the decision, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders and now that everyone knows this is my final year, I'm even more motivated to push for good results in the final few races. In part, it's for me, as I'd like to go out on a high, but it's also to repay the faith that both Yamaha and the GRT Yamaha team have shown in me. It's been a difficult season, but they have worked so hard to help me realize my potential. They never gave up on me, and I hope that my experience has helped the team adapt to racing in WorldSBK just that little bit quicker. I'm looking forward to seeing out my final season with them, and I intend to give it my all, treating every lap like a qualifying lap and pushing to improve myself and bring the team the results they deserve. Then it will be time to move on and do something different with my life. For me, it's been a fantastic journey; thank you to everyone I met along the way." - Marco Melandri, GRT Yamaha Supported WorldSBK.
THE 2020 SEASON OF WORLDSBK WILL BEGIN AT PHILLIP ISLAND Dorna WSBK and the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit are in continued agreement to begin the 2020 WorldSBK season at the Australian venue. Slated as the Yamaha Finance Australian Round, the event will kick-off the 2020 season over the weekend from Friday, February 28th to Sunday, March 1st, 2020. The opening race of the 2020 season will be the 30th round to be held at the circuit, setting a record as the first track to host that amount of rounds for the WorldSBK series.
NO MOTORCYCLE RACING IN 2020 AT PIKES PEAK In a statement from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Board of Directors, they have decided to exclude motorcycle racing from the 2020 event. While the decision has not been made permanent, it is sure to have a significant impact on the event sponsors, participants as well as the motorcycle community and industry at large. The annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been an iconic staple in the list of must attend race events for the last 29 years. The board of directors stated their reason for the exclusion in 2020, "to determine the long-term viability of the motorcycle program... So that race organizers can gather data and analytics to review more thoroughly the impact on the overall event in the absence of this program." This past June, tragedy struck the event when 4-time Champion Carlin Dunne succumbed to injuries as a result of a fatal accident while he was competing in the 2019 event. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support Carlin Dunne's Mother, Romie Gallardo, during this time difficult time of loss. JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 39

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. PETRUCCI IL MAGNIFICO! MOTOGP INVADES THE MUGELLO CIRCUIT... There are certain relatives in a family that garner just a bit more respect than others. In my family, it's my Aunt Ruth. It's like God herself made this woman. When you're in her presence, you stand a little straighter, roll out the red carpet when she's in town. And you watch your mouth, which is usually difficult for me, but when Aunt Ruth is in town, it becomes a cinch. She's earned it, and she gets it! In the MotoGP family of circuits, Mugello is that track! Set in the hillsides of Tuscany and a stone's throw from Florence, Italy, Mugello seems to be something of a fantasy. Carved into the hillside, Mugello's course follows the natural layout of the land. The course allowed nature to dictate its path but don't let its picturesque beauty fool you. The course is known to bite back with ferocity as Marc Marquez found out in 2012 when he set the record for surviving the fastest crash of a motorcycle racer at 202mph! Ask Michele Pirro who's brakes locked on the same stretch of tarmac that Marquez crashed at over 180 mph! Mugello is like a woman. She's beautiful but treat her with respect or else! Another great trait of Mugello is the close finishes it has produced. In Moto3 alone, the largest margin of victory has been 0.09 seconds! And as is the case, this is where we start!
countryman! Not too shabby, eh? MOTO2 This race was dominated by LeMans winner Alex Marquez and elevated Marquez to within two points of points leader Lorenzo Baldassari, who did a remarkable job of finishing fourth after starting 15th on the grid! Talk around the paddock is that Marquez might get a seat on a Ducati next season, but that's all hearsay. Or is it? Bring on the silly season! MOTOGP As delizioso as Italian food can be, it was only par for the course that Mugello would serve up the best race of the season so far. With our racing bellies hungry for the main course after being teased with Moto3 and Moto2, it was time for the MotoGP Freaks to be served dinner and dinner was served! In racing that resembled a Moto3 race, you saw five riders seasoning this tasty dish with questionable moves and slipstreaming that catapulted some from third to first. It was manic yet controlled chaos.
As the race wore on, it was like a street fight with one poor fellow being outnumbered. It was Marc Marquez versus three Ducatis and a Suzuki! But this poor fellow was a seventime World Champion! It was reminiscent of when Andre "The Giant" wrestled a bunch of midgets! No matter how many midgets they MOTO3 As usual, it was a ten rider battle to claim had out there, it was still Andre "The Giant." the top podium position. It was Italian rider Come on, man! Tony Arbolino who nicked fellow countryman Lorenzo Dalla Porta at the line after getting in The five-race battle soon became four as Jack his slipstream. Arbolino then timed his final Miller crashed. And it was the speed of the move for victory to perfection. It was Arbolino's Ducati's versus the cornering of Alex Rins on first victory in the class and in front of his his Suzuki and Marquez on a bike that had 46 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
As he was slipstreamed by Marquez and Dovi on the mile straight, Petrucci fought back with an overtaking that had to be seen to be believed. With the slightest of margins, Petrucci put his bike where it had to be, and the two Ducati's and a Honda entered turn one in a dance that Of the 23 lap race, Petrucci led laps 11 through was only meant for two people! 21, stalked by Marquez, Dovi, and Rins. But not really. But kind of, but not really. But kind Dovi was forced to pick his bike up and never of. Rins was there to pick up the pieces if it all really recovered, relegated to watching his went wrong, which it didn't! It was the start of teammate do battle with an opponent he has the last lap where Danilo Petrucci showed his bested over the past two seasons. Petrucci underdog, determined, never give up the spirit! showed his grit and kept Marquez at bay it was Dovi who calmed his mind by saying, "Live in the now." On this particular Sunday in Tuscany hillside, that is precisely what Danilo Petrucci did! You could almost feel him say, "Not today, fellas! Victory is mine!"

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. "a little bit of everything "to make him almost appear not to have a weakness. The Honda finally had straightaway speed, and cornering was better, and it had Marc Marquez as a rider! Practically not fair! But on this day, a new unlikely hero appeared in the form of Danilo Petrucci. Seen as a complement to Andreas Dovizioso, Petrucci was there to help Dovi win a title. To show how much faith Ducati had in Petrucci, he was signed to a one year contract as most riders are signed two-year contracts. It was almost a foregone conclusion that either Jack Miller or the rookie Pecco would occupy the seat in 2020.
ALEX MARQUEZ
48 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
But nobody could see Petrucci's heart! The heart of a man who almost gave up the dream of racing in MotoGP in 2014. Back then, he was racing on bikes that were basically superbikes in MotoGP, sometimes finishing over 20 seconds behind the leaders! A man who's clearly the biggest rider in the paddock in a sport were small is good and big is bad! But Danilo's spirit is maybe his biggest attribute. He got himself in better shape, lost weight, moved to be closer to Dovi so they could train together and did what was asked of him by Ducati and beyond! In other words, he never quit! When he was worried about getting results at the beginning of the season,
throughout the last lap and avoided a slipstream overtake he was sure to come but never did and Danilo Petrucci won his first MotoGP race! Knowing his story and his humbleness and selfdeprecating humor, there wasn't a single person that didn't have a smile on their face as Petrucci took his victory lap. With the odds stacked against him, Petrucci delivered a victory pizza for Ducati! A victory that will leave him immortal in the eyes of Italian GP fans everywhere! I'm not going to lie. Yours truly shed a tear or two watching Petrucci. Petrucci is the everyday man. He makes up for his lack of God-given talent with hard work and determination. Petrucci knows his mission is to help his teammate, not himself, win a championship and he's okay with that. He dedicated his win to Dovizioso for helping him to achieve this moment.
fans seem a tad tame in comparison.
Petrucci is Rocky and Rudy but on a motorcycle. His heart cannot be measured. He's already been counted out, by himself at one point! But, he kept coming back, and with him being only 33 points down to Marquez and fourth in the championship, you have to wonder. Will he see himself as a championship contender and not just a contributor! Time will tell, but on this Sunday at the Mugello Race Circuit, Danilo Petrucci was everything he dreamed about and even more! If he achieved this milestone, who's to say what's next!
This year's Catalunya GP would feature Rossi and Lorenzo, as well as two other riders but for an entirely different reason. But first, as is customary the support classes.
MARQUEZ WINS, LORENZO SPINS AND THE UNDER-“DUC-LING CONTINUES TO IMPRESS! MOTOGP CRAZINESS IN BARCELONA... What Jerez is, the Catalunya Circuit isn't. Jerez is nestled outside a nice little city. It is quiet with a small airport and is almost the perfect backdrop for racing. Catalunya is just outside Barcelona, A thriving, busy metropolis that never seems to sleep. Maybe this is the reason that both circuits differ in appeal. Whereas fans in Jerez seem rabid in their love of GP, Catalunya
MOTO2 Alex Marquez made it a deuce, as he took victory in his home race and took control of the Moto2 Championship from Lorenzo Baldassarri. Baldassarri put up a donut by crashing and finds himself fourth in the championship!
Whereas The Jerez circuit seems to flow and of course there's the flying saucer, Catalunya never seems to be comfortable in its layout. It's constantly changing to appease the riders. Sharing the track with Formula One doesn't help. The one caveat that the Catalunya circuit has that will be forever carved into the memory banks of racing fans is the classic duel between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo in 2009. If there is ever a race that you show to win over fans to MotoGP, this is the race! For years this circuit has tried in vain to duplicate this magic but sadly to no avail. The closest it has come was the two near-crashes Marc Marquez had in 2018 when he saved both crashes with his elbows and knees.
MOTO3 As is customary, Moto3 was a war of attrition, as only 19 out of 31 riders finished the race. Marcos Ramirez survived the carnage to take victory, followed by championship leader Aron Canet and the soon to be the next big Italian star, Celestine Vietti.
On the low, the Moto2 Championship is entertaining and intriguing. While its not the slugfest of Moto3, it is budding with potential GP talent! It could easily be called the puberty JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 49

this was the 7th annual event. Every year we always say that we're going to make it home to Virginia to check Nanu's Bikefest and this was the year that we finally made it. Some of the fastest racers in drag racing came out to show support and race in the sweltering heat, and they put on a show. Saturday morning, we got to the event bright and early in the morning just to get set up. The temperature was roughly 95 degrees at 10:45 am, and it got hotter as the day went on.

We reached out to Darion "Nanu" Payne roughly two months ago about the event. We offered to sponsor the bikini contest with Asphalt and Opportunity ladies swimwear and provided Asphalt and Opportunity's own Say Michelle as the official bikini contest host. By 3:00 pm, the racers had already rolled in deep. The local bike clubs and independent riders had rolled in, even deeper. We watched Dystany Spurlock, and Richard Gadson lock horn in the 4.60 class early in the day. Once the sun went down and the temperature dropped about 12 degrees, that's when you began to see the nitrous grudge bikes come out.

THE LIFE: THE INSIDE LINE
IT was that time of the year
again, the weekend where all us gear heads go to the beautiful Laguna Seca for the US World Superbike round. This year was a little different than others, considering I didn't get to do too much wandering since I was working. However, instead of Sunday Funday, Monday was the day for me, the day of the Pirelli track day that we all look forward to after a fun, some may say short, some say long weekend, but whatever it is, Monday is our day to get a little down and dirty. As I entered the track at 8 am, it was surprisingly sunny

and beautiful out, which most know is unusual for Laguna Seca, especially if you compare it to last years Pirelli track day. There was no fog flooding through the garages, just sunshine, smiles, and the smell of gasoline. My first stop was Alpinestars, where they had all my gear waiting for me as usual, which is really helpful since lugging around an extra bag full of gear isn't too convenient, especially coming from Florida. Alex from Alpinestars set me up with everything I needed in the motorhome. Arai had set me up once again with an awesome helmet, and the guys over at Kawasaki had a ZX10R ready for me for the day, so I had a pretty smooth set up. We all went to the riders meeting, had a coffee, some fruit and were eager to start the day! While waiting for my session to start, I sat back, chatted with some friends and of course people-watched. I loved seeing all the familiar faces, and even the not so familiar. What I noticed right away was the number of women there. The more and more track days, the number of women rise, and I think that is amazing. I love seeing women out there killing it in a JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 85

GETTING THE HELL OUT OF DODGE: INTERACTING W I T H AGGRESSIVE MOTORISTS
JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 91
THE LIFE: RIDING WHILE STRAPPED WE LIVE IN AN AGGRESSIVE WORLD.
While not everyone falls into that category, the atmosphere of the world that we live in is aggressive. There are a lot of angry people! As a motorcyclists, we often find ourselves face to face with an intense level of hostility from car drivers, or as we affectionately call them, "Cagers." Most of us experience their aggressive manner while sharing the road with them, on the daily Let's be honest about it. For those of us that live in states where filtering traffic is not legal (yet), and we still split lanes, how many times have you encountered an angry driver? So many times, the driver is mad at you only because you are moving, and they are not. I've experienced on many occasions, drivers attempting to close the door on me. Drivers have crossed from one lane to the other, almost hitting the car traveling next to them to prevent or thwart my forward progression. In most of these situations, I take them on the outside, throttle out and go on about my way. I'm taken aback by the level of animosity from people that I have never seen before and most likely, will never see again. They are angry at something or someone else and are seeking targets to take their aggressions out on. Road rage is a real thing. Before we go further, I want to be clear about something. I am not instructing you, nor am I advising you on how to deal with or handle any engagement that you may encounter with an aggressive driver or any other motorist. This installment is a reminder of your prime directive as a rider, even more so as a rider that is strapped. Your prime directive is to remove yourself from any situation that could result in a tragedy. When faced with road rage, regardless of the of intensity, I keep it at the forefront of my mind that I have a better chance of putting a significant amount of distance between the aggressor and myself. My first line of selfdefense in the face of a threat is my throttle. With a twist of the wrist, I can get the Hell out of Dodge, eliminating the threat's engagement. Carry a firearm is not about looking for trouble so you can shoot your way out of it. It is about keeping the peace. It is about keeping your peace. If you don't know or can't accept this as a truth, you should not carry a gun. Maybe you should not be riding a bike as well. 92 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2019
When I worked as a bouncer, in my younger years, my boss at the time, made it very clear, "You do not become a bouncer to get into fights… You become a bouncer to prevent fights and stop fights. Any other thought about the matter is wrong." The same sentiment applies to riding while strapped. Removing your sidearm from its holster is the very last thing that you should do, only after every option has been exhausted and physical, especially mortal harm is imminent. When dealing with aggressive and angry people, your first thought should be to execute your escape route and the get the Hell out of Dodge. It is much easier to defend a speeding ticket than it is to explain the alternative. What that being said, I would not even begin to pontificate on the rights and wrongs, the whens, and the wheres you can or should draw your gun. As I mentioned, this installment is about reminding you to
run your options to escape the threat. I will urge you to become uber familiar with the laws and regulations of the municipality in which you live. Being a law-abiding citizen and knowing your rights are elemental factors for riding while strapped, with confidence. Visit your local gun range and enroll in any courses that they offer relating to defensive shooting. Take all of the classes that they offer on your local laws regarding being a gun owner and carrying concealed or open. What I will stress to you is the importance of escaping the threat. At the same time, when dealing auto-on-moto road rage, remember that you do not have the comfort of being partially or entirely shielded by a steel cage, windshield, engine block, etc. Again, open the throttle and put as much distance between you and threat. On and off of the bike, carrying a sidearm and progressive maturity has brought me peace. I am more
likely to actively remove myself from any environment that is or could be problematic instead of sticking around to see "how things play out." I'm not interested in conflict, understanding that I am carrying a weapon that could end someone's life. It doesn't matter that it would be justified self-defense or preservation of my very being. Drawing my gun is my very last resort. My older brother would always say to me, "if or when you draw, there is no more conversation." He's right. When drawn, your strap is not a period at the end of the sentence. It's the exclamation point. If I'm in an atmosphere where that aggressive conversation or behavior may manifest, I don't want to be anywhere near it. I'm not interested in it. What I am interested in is riding my motorcycle wherever I wish, and for however long I want before returning home to my family. And if I can do that without removing my gun from the holster, to quote Ice Cube, "Today I didn't even have to use my A.K. I got to say, it was a good day." JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 93

Breaking the
Chain Code JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 109
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: THE CHAIN CODE SportBikes Inc editor Allan Lane is always looking out for the best interests of his readers. This month, Allan asked me to discuss the pros and cons of chain and sprocket upgrades. Since this is such a commonly purchased part, we will look at the major considerations for changing out these parts for both the street and the track so that you can make an informed decision. Before we delve into the benefits and downfalls of aftermarket drivetrains, I thought it would be good to cover the basic nomenclature that manufacturers use when describing these parts. For example, what’s the difference between a 630-114 and a 520-120 chain? Once you understand the basics, deciphering the code for chain sizing is simple.
BREAKING THE CHAIN CODE
Motorcycle chain sizes are generally called out in inches, and the three-digit number used to describe the chain size is based on the “rule of eights”. After the three-digit prefix, the suffix (114 or 120 from above) simply represent the number of links in the chain. Here are the basics for breaking down the thre digit primary code for chains. FIRST NUMBER – CHAIN PITCH. Take this number and divide by eight. Examples: 420 or 428 chain pitch is 4/8” (1/2”). 520, 525, 530 or 532 is 5/8” and 630 is 6/8” (3/4”) SECOND AND THIRD NUMBERS – ROLLER WIDTH (SPROCKET THICKNESS). Place a decimal between the last two numbers and divide by eight (with a couple exceptions). Examples: 420 or 520 roller width is 2.0/8” (1/4”). 525 is 2.5/8” (5/16) and 530 or 630 is 3.0/8” (3/8”). Other Factors – there are a few “odd” sizes like 428 and 532 that have the same pitch and roller width as a theoretical 425 or 530 chain would, but have larger roller diameters for extra strength. A 428 chain has a 2.5/8 width and a larger roller diameter.
PROS AND CONS (MAINTAINING THE SAME GEAR RATIO)
The benefits from a new set of chain and sprockets are many. Aftermarket chains can be a key component in customizing your ride as they are available in a variety of finishes and colors that help make your bike unique. Sprockets are available in both steel and color anodized aluminum varieties, as well as a few hybrid designs with aluminum hubs and steel tooth rings for riders looking for a balance of weight and wear characteristics. The weight reduction frim reducing your chain size (520 is the most common size used at the racetrack) is found in the chart in the prior section. In addition, most Aluminum rear sprockets are made from a 7-series alloy, which weighs 60% less than steel. The smaller front sprocket takes such a heavy load that they are all currently made from steel since aluminum is simply not tough enough to survive. Combining a smaller chain with a thinner set of sprockets will commonly save save 2-3 pounds of weight. Since chain and sprockets spin, weight reduction in these parts make a greater difference in the performance of your bike. Your bike not only has to move this weight forward but also spin it up, so weight here creates a double penalty. Here is a simple example that illustrates the difference between fixed and rotational weight. Since Force = Mass x Acceleration, a 1% reduction in combined bike and rider weight would roughly cause the same engine (Force) to produce about 1% more acceleration. The average bike and rider are about 600 lbs., so this theoretical 1% equals about 6lbs. As an experiment on the Dyno, we were tested a couple street bikes and were shocked that when we switched from a stock tire to a heavier aftermarket tire (about 6 lbs) on a bike that was making about 100hp, we lost about 6hp (6%)! We thought something was wrong until we put the stock tire back on and everything went back to normal. Now, the tire makes a large difference because it is such large diameter (this makes a big difference) but in this case the difference in performance was 6X the theoretical gain in reducing 6 lbs. in weight elsewhere. In addition, bikes with lower rotating weight will feel substantially lighter when turning from side to side. There is one significant down side to reducing your chain size and going to an aluminum sprocket, and this is the life span of the components. The smaller parts concentrate the drive loads on the smaller pins, bushings and sprocket teeth. Before making this change, always refer to the chain manufacturer and be certain that the chain you are looking for is properly rated for your motorcycle. The tensile strength data on the previous chart is good for comparing the relative strength of one chain to another, but bike manufacturers do not call out minimum chain strength numbers for each model – that’s the job of the chain manufacturers. While the life of a 520 chain is going to be less than a 630 chain, I’ve had excellent luck when purchasing top quality 520 chains (low grade 520 chains wear out extremely fast) on my race bikes over the years. Proper lubrication and adjustment is paramount to preventing early failure, and riders can figure on replacing these components at 2-3 times the frequency of a larger chain with steel sprockets.

CHANGING GEAR RATIOS
If you decide to change your sprockets, the next decision will be whether you want to keep the stock gear ratio. If you are a racer, choosing the right gearing is a major part of your setup and will vary greatly from track to track. See Sport Bikes Inc April 2015 for a detailed article on this process. For street riders, changing sprocket sizes is a give/take process that will vary greatly from rider to rider based on what you are trying to accomplish. The two basic choices are to go “taller” or “shorter”. Taller gearing is accomplished by either selecting a larger front sprocket or a smaller rear sprocket. In theory, taller gear increases top speed (if your bike has the horsepower to utilize it). If your bike will not pull to redline in top gear as it is, then taller gearing is not likely to help your bike go faster. Taller gearing will require you to slip the clutch a little more when leaving from a stop, but it will also decrease the amount that you need to shift. Your bike will not accelerate as quickly in a top gear roll-on, but your highway cruising RPM will be lower. Let’s say you want to estimate the change in RPM you’ll get by changing gearing. If your bike currently cruises at 5,000 RPM at 65 mph on the highway and go from a 41 to a 40-tooth rear sprocket and change from a 15 tooth to a 16-tooth front sprocket, your new cruising RPM will be as follows:
(OLD RPM) X (NEW GEAR RATIO) / (OLD GEAR RATIO) = NEW RPM. In this case your old gear ratio was 41/15 (2.733) and the new gear ratio is 40/16 (2.500). YOUR NEW RPM WILL BE 5000 X 2.500 / 2.733, WHICH EQUALS 4573 RPM (427 RPM LOWER). Conversely, if you go shorter (smaller front sprocket or larger rear sprocket) then the bike will launch more easily, accelerate more quickly and need to be shifted more often. Your ultimate top speed will be lower (you can use the same formula above to calculate your theoretical new top speed) and the cruising RPM on the highway will be higher. Since the RPM drop between shifts will be smaller the bike will see less of the lower portions of the horsepower curve and accelerate more quickly between each shift. This is why you typically see huge rear sprockets on stunt riding machines as the bike can pull right through the lower part of the power curve and more easily loft the front wheel in any gear. Changing your chain and sprockets can make a big difference in your motorcycle, and I hope this article has given you a little insight into how you can affect change on your machine. Until next time... Ride fast. Ride safe! JULY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 111
