HARLEY-DAVIDSON OFFERS TWO NEW METHODS OF RIDER EDUCATION
With two new programs, designed to make learning how to ride less complicated, more fun and convenient, H-D is hoping to put more riders in the saddle.

ALMOST 4,000 MOTORCYCLES RECALLED BECAUSE OF FAULTY BRAKE PADS The 2019 and 2020 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R are subject to a recall issued by Kawasaki Motor Corp. In all, close to 1,530 units are affected by the recall. On affected units, the engine could backfire while shifting under high engine loads when the Kawasaki Quick Shifter (KQS) is activated, potentially resulting in damage to the air suction valves. The blowback of high-temperature exhaust gas from continued use could result in additional damage to surrounding parts and create the potential for a fire. Kawasaki is alerting all registered owners of affected motorcycles and instructing the dealer network to repair the ECU by reprogramming it and replacing the air suction valves.

THE FIRST RIDE: DUCATI STREETFIGHTER V4S THIS LATEST DUCATI is the pragmatic street bike of your MotoGP fantasies. The Italian manufacturer passed down its GP layout to the riveting Panigale V4 sportbike, and now that platform gets stripped down to this Streetfighter V4 form, creating a captivating MotoGP experience for the street. Key to the SF’s streetability is its handlebar placed more than six inches higher than the Panigale V4, and its footpegs are lower by nearly an inch, dramatically changing the ergonomics from scrunched to something approaching roomy. The story of the Streetfighter V4 begins between your knees, with one of the most phenomenal engines ever bolted into a motorbike. Just hearing the Desmosedici Stradale motor bark to life evokes images of pit lane at Mugello or Monza, sounding like a cross between a typical V-4 and a V-Twin because of Ducati’s unique Twin-Pulse firing arrangement. Its V-4 isn’t limited to specific race regulations, so it’s super-sized to 1103cc. An unusual counterrotating crankshaft orientation helps deliver quicker steering responses like its GP cousin.

Clever engine tuning keeps the motor in a large sweet spot, supplying plenty of power throughout its rev range before surging to its max torque of 90 lb-ft at 11,500 rpm and its horsepower peak at 12,750rpm with a claimed 208 ponies. And there’s still a river of overrev power until the V-4 reaches its stratospheric 14,500rpm redline. At that point, you’d better hope you’re at a racetrack or far away from the police. For context, consider Ducati’s previous bigcube Streetfighter, the 1098 introduced in 2009, had “only” 155 hp. This V-4 powerplant sounds vicious and accelerates even more so, brain-meltingly absurd for a street bike and aided by 10% shorter gearing than its Panigale sportbike brother. Aimed at a desolate road, there is almost no vehicle that can pile on speed quicker than the SF V4. JUNE 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 21
THE FIRST RIDE: DUCATI STREETFIGHTER V4S But this new Duc is more than just a speed machine. It’s sexy, even if not traditionally graceful. Its captivating appearance earned it the award for “most beautiful bike” at the 2019 EICMA show in Milan. The SF’s sculptural tail section is an interesting visual treat that practically begs you to bend down and look through it from behind. And its MotoGP-inspired wings certainly contribute to the SF’s exoticness, even if they’re pretty much useless for downforce at street speeds. Typical for contemporary Ducatis, the Streetfighter has the full complement of electronic rider aids that can be individually customized to a rider’s preferences. A 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) informs cornering-ABS as well as traction, wheelie and slide controls. Personally, I prefer a bit of traction control but want to control my own wheelies, so I select TC6 and WC0, and it’s a welcome feature to be able to control them independently. Adjustments are accomplished with intuitive navigation from the left-side switchgear and a vibrant color TFT instrument screen. An up/down quick shifter makes swapping cogs mostly seamless, with the one-two shift being least smooth. Other street amenities include self-canceling turn signals that intelligently switch off forgotten blinkers nearly as quickly as you would do it manually. Excessive engine heat is mitigated by a system that switches off the rear two cylinders at idle when coolant temperature exceeds 167 degrees, appropriating a trick introduced by Harley-Davidson (colloquially known as parade mode) and recently followed by Indian. The cylinder deactivation is sensed at idle via a subtle variation in audio and feel, sounding briefly a little like a slight repetitive misfire before smoothing out. alleviate excess heat, but there’s no hiding from the BTUs generated by a 200 horsepower engine sitting between your legs. As long as we’re dreaming of Italian sportbike practicality, we’ll encourage you to dig deeper and upgrade from the base Streetfighter ($19,995) to the S version, which includes Marchesini forged wheels and Öhlins electrically controlled suspension for an extra $4k. The lighter wheels ramp up the bike’s agility, and DES solves the problem of finding the delicate balance of plushness and control - just leave it set to its Dynamic mode and it’ll back off harsh damping if you’re not riding aggressively. Or set the ride mode to Street, and it’ll deliver surprisingly plush ride quality along with smooth throttle reactions.

Handling is what you’d expect from a racebred Ducati. It loves being ridden hard, and it is a cooperative accomplice at unwinding twisty roads both fast and slow, aided in speedy steering by its backward-rotating engine and lightweight wheels. It’s much more composed than the previous V-Twin 1098 Streetfighter, offering a stable platform in every environment. Brakes are top-shelf Brembo Stylemas up front that delivers all the bite and feedback you’d ever want. Although wind protection is minimal, the moderately leaned-forward riding position makes an 80mph cruise reasonably agreeable. Adjustable brake and clutch levers fit hands of all sizes. The seat is far more accommodating than any 208-horsepower sportbike has a right

HONDA RACING CORP SHUFFLES THE DECK - HRC WELCOMES A NEW TEAM MEMBER, TRANSITIONS A RIDER AND SAYS GOODBYE TO A PROVEN ASSET
HRC has moved things around, quite a bit over the last week. For one, the extended their contract with Alex Marquez for two more years from the end of the 2020 season. However, at the end of 2020, the former Moto3 and Moto2 World Champion will transition to the LCR Honda team for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Where does that leave the current LCR Honda pilot, Cal Crutchlow? In a press release, HRC thanked the British rider for hard and diligent work dating back to 2015, when he joined the team. Over his six-year tenure at LCR Honda, Crutchlow earned three race victories and a dozen podiums.

THE PRESS ROOM MICHAEL VAN DER MARK DEPARTS FROM YAMAHA AT THE CONCLUSION OF 2020 Yamaha and Michael Van der Mark are not renewing their four-year contract that began in 2017. The 27-year-old Dutchman is looking for a new challenge in 2021, after an impressive run with the Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team. During his tenure, Van der Mark has earned three WorldSBK race wins plus numerous podium finishes in addition to a pair of wins at the Suzuka 8 Hour race. Van der Mark and the Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team return to race action in July with the WorldSBK season set to resume with back-toback races in Jerez and Portimao.

AS COVID19 continues to spread across the United States, motorcycle drag racing and many other sports have been nonexistent and placed on hold for the 2020 season. As states are beginning to loosen those restrictions on Americans in an attempt to slow the spread, we’re beginning to see the reopening of the race tracks. Recently, North Carolina just received permission to enter into Phase II of reopening but was given an added restriction of no more than 25 people together for outside gatherings leaving racetrack officials to go to “NO FANS” and only private test and tune sessions. The workaround was fairly similar to NASCAR. Each motorcycle team was allowed 8 crew members per motorcycle team to work on the bike in the pits and 48 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2020

to conduct testing. Due to the fear of the coronavirus spreading, social distancing was set in place as best as possible and only 3 crew members were allowed on the starting line with the motorcycle. Until things begin to get back to some type of normalcy, this may become the new norm in the drag racing community across the U.S. until a vaccine is put in place to stop the spread. While at the private testing event, we were able to talk to race teams that had come from as far as Dallas, TX, and Chicago, IL just to attend. Most were just excited to get out and be around racers in the racing community that they hadn’t seen since the 2019 season ended. Most racers made modifications to their machines during the lockdown but were only able to run the motorcycle on JUNE 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 55

a dyno so this was their first opportunity to put it on a track and work the bugs out while getting some gas off of their chest. Motorcycle racing, in general, is a very small community so when you break it down into all of its subcategories, drag racing is even smaller. So it's always exciting to see them get together and do a little racing while maintaining everyone's safety as priority number one. As restrictions are slowly lifting, the drag racing season will pick up and allow minimal fans in the stands so, hopefully, we can continue to do what we love safely. 56 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2020

A RETURN TO NORMALCY? IT FEELS LIKE it’s been an eternity since our normal life, and when I say life, you all know I’m talking about racing. Every year once the season ends, we are all counting down the days until it starts once again. We follow what the riders are doing to stay fit, tuning into the tests and who is staying with what team and who is leaving and why. Unfortunately, once the start of the season came around, a tiny little bug came in and wiped out our hopes and dreams. Dramatic. But is it really? We have all been affected, some more than others, but one thing we have in common is our love for motorsports. Racing keeps us entertained, lifted and full of life. important missing pieces to this sport is not just the physicality of the boys racing, but our family. Our racing family. For us Americans, we get one time a year to meet with our friends from all over the world. Each and every one of us plans for the next year the day the race weekend ends as expected, for the reason one weekend isn’t enough for us. It’s hectic, exhausting, and like no other weekend, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Seeing my friends all in one place is something I’m so thankful for. I am deeply saddened not to be able to be with them this year.
On the bright side, racing is finally coming to a start. We may not be able to attend races, being all together in one place, however, being able to look forward to the race weekend again is thrilling. After a long work week, being able to kick off my shoes, pour myself a glass of bourbon and tune into the races really just is a great weekend in my eyes. Things may not be the same or ever return to normality. However, there will always be motorsports. We may have had to wait longer than anticipated, but MotoGP is back! Now let’s toast to that. Riders who are single point focused will watch this point approach the whole way down the hill and just as it approaches transition their view to the next reference (the apex)... WHEN DISSECTING THE nuances of a racetrack, rider vision is the key to success. I was recently asked by a student when he should look for the next reference mark when he was in a particular turn. He was having a difficult time "transitioning" from mark to mark in several turns and felt that it was slowing him down. As I began to think about this question I recalled many riders in the past who have had similar issues and noted how understanding track vision is a critical building block that can dramatically slow progress if it is missing from your riding foundation.
are taught the importance of the four basic targets; brake points, turn points, apexes and exit points. Since humans have poor internal speedometers, we instead use our ability to identify and follow concrete markers on the track. We can do this well and riders are always better with reference points than without them. However, the way that different riders use their respective points can make a huge difference in their results.
Perhaps one of the most important points that is not always taught about reference points is that they should not be used individually. The entire entrance is stressful, and they often arrive at the apex much too slowly after braking more than is needed down the hill. As they approach the turn point, they quickly look up and need to locate and focus on the apex. Does any of this sound familiar?

THE MIPS OR Multi-Directional Impact Protection System is the product of 25 plus years of research at the Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm Sweden. Over the last year, you may have seen and/or heard the term MIPS floating about the industry, specifically regarding ICON's Airflite MIPS Stealth Helmet. With a price tag of $320, ICON's first helmet to include the MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) looks to offer an additional, yet primary level of protection for your noggin. The MIPS or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System is the product of 25 plus years of research at the Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm Sweden. The brainchild, literally, of Peter Halldin, Hans von Holst, and Svein Kleiven, MIPS was birthed from studies of real-life accidents of head trauma, with helmets, to understand the reaction of the human brain to various engagements of rotational motion at an angled impact. It was discovered that while the brain is protected by its natural cerebrospinal fluid, strain or damage from an angled impact can be severe. From this data, the Finite Element Model (FE Model) 84 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2020

Using the FE Model, they were able to simulate varying degrees of head trauma and the effect that trauma would have on the human brain, without risking damage to an actual brain. Through computer simulations, the team at MIPS researched the damage and potential damage then analyzed the data. From that data, they developed an advanced method of protection for the brain. head and the helmet. Think about it like this, if your scalp is your brain and your helmet represents your skull, then the MIP BPS is designed to perform as the cerebrospinal fluid between the two. The goal was to increase cerebral stability by providing 10 to 15mm of movement between the head and the helmet, in any direction, when the head comes to a sudden stop as a result of an impact. Realistically, when a rider crashes, if their head comes into contact with the ground or any other object, it will most likely be at an angle. It is less likely that the point of impact will be a direct 45 or 90 degree. Understanding this, MIPS does their helmet drop testing at a 30-degree angle, with the BPS installed, using nine accelerometers inside a Hybrid III crash test dummy head and FE Model. The industry standard is to drop the helmet in a straight vertical. The MIPS method of testing mimics real-world crashes. MIPS BPS received its patent in 1998 and has since been implemented in 103 helmet brands and 583 helmet models across industries that include sports, ski, safety, and of course moto. The MIPS BPS made its moto world debut in 2016 with Bell Helmets and is now partnered with a selection of credible helmet brands that install MIPS in their manufacturing process, which include Troy Lee Designs, Kabuto, Z1R, Thor and ICON Motosports.
