FROM THE EDITOR
RIDE, UNRIDDEN I still find it amazing how polarizing a new model of a motorcycle can be. There's always the one side that lives by the old adage, "change is good." Then there are those on the other side, the purists, who feel so strongly against anything severely different from what they are used to. I guess their motto is, "If it ain't broke... upgrade it!"
rants occurred long before the general public had access to throwing a leg over it, let alone seeing actual images of the bike. Even riders that were not Yamaha owners or fans chimed in with their strong and hefty opinions. As a journalist, I find it all entertaining and inspiring. To have a strong opinion about something new, sight unseen, and ride unridden... means that the passion for our industry is alive ever strong. The riding community is dialed and connected with what's happening in and around our industry.
There is a small population that lives in between, the grey area that believes that if the bike can be better, make it better and if that means ending the run of one model to introduce something completely new, then so That inspires me. be it. THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA YZF-R7
IT IS IMPORTANT to start this review off by addressing everything that the 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is not. Since its announcement, the internet and social media platforms have been bombarded with both glory and gripes based upon the misconception that the R7 was to be the successor of the YZF-R6. While it is understandable that one could be lead to believe such, I mean… 7 does follow 6. I, too, at first believed this to be the case. Yes, Yamaha does play things close to the chest as they enjoyed the additional layers of mystique that shrouded this new motorcycle. So, to be clear… The YZF-R7 is not the evolution of the R6. However, it is a process in the evolutionary step of Yamaha's motorcycle engineering. The 2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 is every bit an asphalt assassin as it is a track weapon. A deeper look into the bike's specifications sheds some light on the designations used but to get right down to the business, the R7 is quite a brilliant piece of machinery with 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

The R7's triangle rests between the R3 and R6 thanks to the height of the clip-on handlebars mounted to a cast top triple clamp and forged lower triple. Sculpted into the fuel tank are deep pockets for your knees. The seat height measures 835mm. The result is a comfortable yet aggressive sport attack riding form on which you have the freedom to adjust your body position and maintain a solid connection to the bike. The Yamaha YZF-R7 is powered by a 689cc inline twin-cylinder CP2 engine. This is the same engine platform as the MT-07 but with a few bells and whistles. The R7 is equipped with an assist and slipper clutch, a first for the CP2 engine and it came in handy when running through the paces during the time spent on track. A highlight of the R7's engine configuration is the implementation of its 270-degree crankshaft that produces a more balanced and consistent delivery of useable

torque and power. Rolling on the throttle, the R7 responds with smooth and reliable acceleration. There is no herk. No jerk. At open throttle, the R7 behaved with an aggressive performance providing real power throughout the RPM band. After the first few sessions, with several laps in, I upped my gearing at sections of the course with a progressive response. Where I was traveling in second and third gear, I bumped up to third and fourth and found the ride even more exhilarating. Our test bikes were equipped with the optional quick shift system ($199.99… It's worth it!) so upshifts were effortless. From corner entry, apex to exit, the R7 offered constant stability that increased my confidence in the job at hand. Comfort and confidence in the R7 came quickly. That left plenty of room to focus on the twists of the track. Atlanta Motorsports Park consists of a multitude of left and right-handers and not much in the long straights department. It is more technical than it is fast. However, it is quick. It could be very easy to underestimate the layout and run off the circuit. I was spared any run-off moments, not for lack of trying. The braking components of the R7 are premium. At the front end, there's the Brembo radial master cylinder with a 16mm piston that operates radial ADVICS calipers with 30mm and 27mm pistons that grab the twin 298mm rotors. Managing speed upon corner entry was steady and strong thanks to the feedback from the braking setup. Through the chicane after turn one and at other sections on the course, the nimbleness JUNE 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 35

of the thin R7 takes high marks. For the frame and suspension, Yamaha employs a steeper rake (23.7 degrees), a shorter trail (88mm), and a 1395mm wheelbase with 41mm KYB upside-down adjustable forks. was to be a replacement model. The love is "claimed" because the R6's last best sales year was 2008, for new motorcycles. Since then, new R6 sales have decreased significantly. In recent years, used R6 sales have towered over new bike sales, consistently. It is in the math. The cost of a new bike has increased over the years and that's in part due to the implementation of new technology. Electronic suspension, cornering ABS, standard ABS, traction control, lift control, slide control, and everything else that composes modern sportbike technology… comes with a price tag. The secondary market fills the gap providing consumers with, maybe not the latest and greatest, but "new to them" riding features.
Our YZF-R7s were outfitted with Bridgestone Battlax Racing R11 tires that gripped the asphalt with dominion. The R7 that you purchase from your dealer will be fitted with Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tires sized 120/70-R17 for the front and 180/55-R17 at the rear. Aprilia TUONO
42 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

WORDS: PETER JACKSON IMAGES: LARRY CHEN JUNE 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 43
THE FIRST RIDE: APRILIA TUONO 660 APRILIA IS HITTING a bit of a purple patch right now. The RSV4 1100 superbike is getting overhauled. There’s a new adventure bike coming. And who knows? Maybe the MotoGP bike won’t be such a laughing stock this year. Hot on the heels of the delectable RS 660 released in 2020 comes the RS’s naughty cousin, the one who keeps taking their clothes off at inappropriate times. And now, ladies and gentlemen (insert stripper DJ voice), please welcome to the stage… Tuono 660! The RS 660 signaled a change in philosophy for a company that made its name in little bike performance. Let us not forget the impact a certain two-stroke by the name of the RS 250 had on motorcycling as a whole. And while that little gem didn’t spawn a naked Tuono version, its death 17 or so years ago meant Aprilia’s attention was shifted into the above 750cc segments in everything from sportbikes to long-range tourers like the long-forgotten Aprilia Futura 1100. Now Aprilia is looking backward to go forwards. Reimagining their line of semi-entry level machines to get riders fired up about a brand that doesn’t get anywhere near enough love in the United States for how good their bikes are. The $10,499 MSRP Tuono 660 ($200 more if you want the yellow one) is technically the same as the RS 660. But with a few subtle differences (if you want to refresh your memory on the RS, my Editor himself perched himself aboard one at the national launch last year, the test of which you can read here). The same 659 cc parallel-twin motor that churns out 100 hp and 49 lb-ft of torque sits in the same twin-spar aluminum chassis. And the same Aprilia Performance Ride Control electronics that house multiple riding, traction, ABS, and wheelie modes are found within the ECU. Oh, and cruise control comes as standard. However, the 41mm Kayaba front suspension gets 10 mm less wheel travel at 110 mm, with both rebound and preload adjustments done via the right fork leg only. The RS also gets a lithium-ion battery compared to the lead acid one found on the Tuono. Other than that, the two bikes are near identical 44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021
JUNE 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 45
THE FIRST RIDE: APRILIA TUONO 660 (except for the clothes, obviously). Aprilia is claiming 403 lb ready to rock with a full 3.96 gallon tank of gas for the Tuono, putting it on par with the Yamaha MT-07 at 400 lb with a 3.7 gallon tank of gas. The Tuono 660 doesn’t come with an IMU as standard. That’ll cost you an extra $199. The same for the Aprilia Quick Shifter. However, once you get the IMU, you then switch on Cornering ABS and Cornering Lights, which is a worthy purchase. The Tuono feels bigger than it actually is, which is both a good a bad thing. It’s good because the size gives the motorcycle a feeling of solidity. It’s got that premium product feel. Especially when you look to the sides of the machine and see the air ducts/winglets that help direct cool air to the motor while simultaneously drawing hot air away from the rider. The tank is tall and wider. Something like a KTM 890 Duke R, which will suit taller riders out there. The shape of the tank makes you feel more in the motorcycle than on it. And gives you a solid connection to the chassis for when the road gets twisty. The size might be a bit of a put-off for brand new riders who are on the south side of 5’6”. But overall, the Tuono is by far the most approachable machine in Aprilia’s line-up. So those concerns will likely subside after about 10 minutes on board. The motor is a gem with plenty of top-end power. Although it gets hurt by quite a pronounced flat spot from 5-7000 rpm. Here, right when you want the bike to build speed and revs, it drops off a cliff. Laboring through the 2000 rpm emissions block before roaring back into life like a two-stroke. This is rather frustrating when you’re trying to set a canyon PB and want every ounce of available performance. But it’s less of a concern when you’re simply cruising with the crew. It’s a good engine otherwise. And matched to the lovely Aprilia Quick Shift system, there are good times to be had indeed. The chassis is light and nimble and will answer your sporty 46 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

commands just as well as the RS will. You can really hustle the Tuono along and it’ll keep coming back for more. Although if you brake hard enough and start hitting bumps on corner entry you will find the limits of the fork’s capabilities. A set of nice Ohlins cartridges would make this a sexy little beast indeed. The Tuono 660 is a worthy little sister to the fire-breathing Tuono 1100. And its arrival may have come at the perfect time. As we get more and more turned on to little bikes and the joys they bring, the Aprilia Tuono 660 should provide the perfect platform for new and even returning riders to get into the Aprilia fold. Not to mention experienced riders who want something a touch more mellow than the mentality of a Tuono 1100, but still a little naughtiness in their lives. And we all need some of that these days.

AS I’VE MADE my predictions on the 2021 MotoGP season, I always ended every piece with, "...that is, until Daddy gets home!” Well, Daddy is Marc Marquez. And he is back. Albeit not 100% but back nonetheless. And let’s face it, an even 50% Marquez is must-see TV. April 18, 2021, was the date MotoGP fans had circled on their calendar. Portimao! That word has probably never been mentioned as much as during the week of April 18th and boy did Marquez not disappoint! It started at the preevent presser when the 2020 World Champion, Joan Mir said innocently enough, “Let’s see how competitive he will be!” Sounds like nothing, right? Well, Marquez extended a look in Mir’s direction that smoldered like a campfire. Mind games activated! It was obvious Marquez wasn’t quite the same but he was still pretty damn good, qualifying 6th. Not too shabby for a guy who took a year's sabbatical as if he were a Mormon on a mission Except his mission this time was to just see how he would do. No expectations. Yeah, right! For mere mortals such as myself and you that reads my articles, maybe... But for Marc Marquez, his "no expectations" exceeded all expectations. Testing his surgically repaired arm on one of the most grueling circuits on the calendar was as good a litmus test as you could ask for. And Marquez passed through with pure grit and determination. His arm obviously was bothering him after trying to manhandle a 280 hp beast all weekend. Eventually, it started to take its toll. Rumors started to circulate if he would finish the race. 25 laps on a circuit dubbed "The Rollercoaster" because of its resemblance to an amusement park favorite would certainly test the strength of his arm. But like I said, when talking about Marquez you're talking to the closest thing to Michael Jordan on two wheels. JUNE 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 63
THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. Marquez wills his bike and body to do things his rivals can't and won't. He got off to a fantastic start and was as high as third place before eventually settling for seventh. Upon which he sat in his chair after the race and succumbed to the emotion of the weekend and wept like a child who didn't get ice cream for dessert. It was the first time since 2018 that Marquez didn't finish on the podium.Barring a major setback, Marquez should be back to his 'old self of wreaking havoc on the MotoGP field. And although I believe he will do just that, I think this year's crop of MotoGP riders will give Marquez his stiffest test to date. The Ducatis, particularly Johan Zarco and Pecco Bagnaia will give him nightmares on circuits where horsepower is king. The two rivals that will provide the stiffest of the stiff, will be Portimao and Qatar winner Fabio Quartararo and 2020 Champ Joan Mir. Marquez has already started the mind games with Mir by stalking him in qualifying like DeShaun Watson looking for massage therapists. Mir got the better of him in the race but in laymen's terms, it's on! This rivalry should be a good one. It's Quartararo that poses the biggest threat. Fabio has never beaten Marquez in a showdown and this 2021 Quartararo looks more focused, relaxed and hungry than I've ever seen him. Fabio is the man to beat in GP. Make no mistake, Marc will be up for the challenge. I can see it in his eyes. He's got that look. That look that broods, "I will see you on the track. And then we shall see what you got. May the best man win." Raul Fernandez and Pedro Acosta share that brooding look and they both won on Sunday in Moto3 and Moto2. They will be Marc's future rivals. Marc will be slowly on the downside of his career and these young lions will show him no 64 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021

mercy. Nor will Marquez, but it will be Marquez who stirs the drink that is MotoGP. He brings out the best in his rivals. And we, the spectators are the beneficiaries. Sunday in Portugal was a good race. It saw three costly mistakes by championship contenders and it showed the bright future that GP has in Pecco Bagnaia and French Superstar Fabio Quartararo But most importantly it showed that, although two races down, to win the 2021 MotoGP title, you have to deal with an eight-time MotoGP Champion who isn't quite ready to give it up that easy. Daddy's home! Now what? We will find out in two weeks, in Jerez, Spain. Stay tuned. GP just got even better. And it was already pretty damn good! JUNE 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 67

THE LIFE: SA1NT UNBREAKABLE JEANS
78 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2021
LET ME START by saying these Sa1nt Unbreakable Jeans are without a doubt the most comfortable riding jeans that I’ve ever worn. They have 2% Elastane. I don’t know what Elastane is but it works. The slight stretch makes them comfortable sitting on your bike or walking around off of it. So by now, we all know about All The Gear All The Time or ATGATT. However, with all the gear all the time, the problem is sometimes you are going to an event where leather pants might get you a sideeye. It’s hard to explain to your date that you don’t have freaky plans later when you show up in a leather suit. Enter riding jeans, they’re comfortable and normal looking. These Sa1nt jeans are truly good-looking. Nice dark denim. Not super skinny which doesn’t look good if you are not, or so baggy they might blow away or show you’re stuck in the 90s. I didn’t test the "unbreakable" factor but the Dyneema fabric is supposed to be super strong. And the Sa1nt Unbreakable Riding jeans are reinforced in the right places. The only drawback I found is the shallow pockets. I carry a little too much junk in my pockets. I’d like for them a little deeper for security. I won’t comment on price because, in my opinion, you can not put a price on safety. They may cost a few dollars more but they are definitely worth it. Hey, it is yo' ass they may save!
