EDITOR’S LETTER

I just turned 37. I’m not sure if that means anything or if its supposed to mean anything other than... I’m still here. And if that’s the case, then I’m cool with it. At 37, when people ask me what I do for a living, my reply is, “I ride motorcycles.” It always takes me a second after those words exit from my lips to realize just how cool that sounds. It’s pretty bad ass. My point being... If you want to do something, the only competition you have is yourself. Take a long look in the mirror, put your big boy pants on then go get busy. Don’t let anyone/thing stop you from doing you. Enjoy the issue. Best, Allan

The issue revolves around the circlips used to hold the footpegs in place that can break due to an error in the assembly process as well as engine vibration.

Tom Cutter’s

2010 BMW S 1 0 0 0 RR

“THE CUTTER” T

he first time that I saw this bike was at an Absolute Cycle track day event at New Jersey Motorsports Park. It’s a known fact that at any given track day, you’ll see bikes in every size and condition: fairing, no fairing, primer paint jobs, custom paint jobs, and just about everything in between. So when you see a bike on the grid that looks like it would be right at home on the World SuperBike Paddock... you take a deeper look. Such is the case with Tom Cutter’s 2010 BMW S1000RR. It stood out, not because it was race inspired. Rather, because it inspires race. Cutter is a seasoned racer and at 58 years young, he’s earned multiple championships in the WERA series during the 2011 season. Riding at his level of expertise, having the right equipment is mandatory. Cutter spared no expense in defining his weapon of race. From the engine upgrades, controls and braking components right down to the custom race paint job, Cutter has polished his S1000RR to not only look good but to perform even better. When he smokes you coming out of the last turn and down the front straight, he wants it to be memorable for you. They don’t call him the Cutter for nothing. 18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

s I write this, Daytona is only two weeks away. The preseason jitters are in full effect and I’m quite anxious! It’s going to be a long season so I’m hoping to just get out of Daytona with a top five finish, especially after suffering a recent knee dislocation. After gaining the National Guard as a title sponsor along with Fair Hills Group and Celtic Racing, I definitely have some raised expectations for myself this season. The ultimate goal is winning a championship prior to moving up to the next class. With that said, consistency is a must throughout this season and one of my main focuses! I am really really excited though: new bikes, new team, new tractor trailer (it’s sweet!) and all of the other things that come along with being part of a new team.

reeAnn Poland has risen from the role of umbrella girl to team owner over the span of twelve years. Hard work, perseverance and a never say die attitude are the elements of BreeAnn’s formula for success. On a personal note, I must say that she is genuinely a fun person to be with. There was a time when BreeAnn was unaware of any professional motorcycle racing series and thought that it was all “drag strips and stupid men doing wheelies on the highway.” Little did she know that she was about to embark on a new journey, find her new path and put all she has into this sport. Thanks to BreeAnn’s then boyfriend, an interest was sparked that turned into a borderline obsession with motocross. She became a model for Umbrella Girls USA and traveled all over the USA working motocross events in the late 90‘s. She eventually made the transition from motocross into the world of road racing and never left. SBI: What is your job in road racing? Bree: I’m the Team Manager for Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki Team SBI: How long have you been doing this? Bree: Since 2000. SBI: Did you seek this job out or did it fall in your lap? Bree: My current job was both. I 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

had my own thing going last year and it was hard. Mark from Vesrah needed someone to handle day to day operations so we decided to merge our efforts. SBI: Is this a passion or just a job for you? Bree: A passion. If it wasn’t, I would be doing something else less stressful. To me it’s all about being around something I love. SBI: What is the one thing you would like to share that people would be surprised to know about you? Bree: I have taught health education for the past ten years. I mainly teach to people who work in the healthcare field. And when I’m home, I am always at my son’s school volunteering. SBI: Do you find it hard being a woman surrounded by probably 98% of men in this industry? Bree: For sure. People think because you’re a woman, you lack intelligence and are in it for the wrong reasons. You have to prove yourself time and time again. SBI: What kind of strengths do you need to be working in this environment? Bree: A strong backbone, creative mind, love for the sport, patience and a knack for finding funding. SBI: How does all the traveling affect you and your personal life? Bree: It affects me a ton. I am away from my son much more than the average mom but it just makes the time I spend with him

so much more special! I do get to rack up good airline miles which gives me a chance to take good vacations with him. SBI: What do your family and friends think of your involvement in road racing? Bree: My boyfriend loves that I love two wheels, but he would rather me not travel for work. My dad and brother support me 150% and love bragging about what I do to everyone they know. My son isn’t into bikes but loves being able to see “mommy’s team” or “riders” on t.v. SBI: How would you describe “The Paddock” to someone who has never been? Bree: The “AMA Paddock” is like a small family. There is love and respect, but also fierce competitiveness. SBI: What one thing would you change in this series to make it better for the sport? Bree: I would say better offtrack promotions, nationwide. I don’t think the series is out there enough. I live in Northern Virginia and it doesn’t seem like people here really know there is a professional road racing platform for motorcycles. I think there needs to be more things to do at the track for fans during off track time, something each member of the family can enjoy. SBI: This sport is highly praised all around the world. Why do you think it is not widely known here in the USA? Bree: In the rest of the world, SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 29

THE GRID two wheels are a way of life... not a luxury. People use scooters and motorcycles on a daily basis. Here in the USA, we use it as a hobby. SBI: What is the one word or sentence that you would use to sum up your feelings of your Paddock Life? Bree: I feel complete when in the paddock. BreeAnn is totally professional about her team and riders. I have not met another woman more passionate about this sport besides myself. We first met in 2008 and were both a little standoffish. When we did eventually say “Hi” to one another and started talking, we clicked immediately... over margaritas. It might seem at times that she is a hard ass, but BreeAnn actually uses this as a deflection. She is a very guarded and private person but has done so much for this sport and has come such a long way. She has proven that she can hold her own. Who goes from Umbrella Girl to running hospitality for the Corona Honda Team, to working on Richie Morris’ GEICO Team, to taking over as the first woman owner on the Roberson team last year to the current manager position at Vesrah? BreeAnn Poland, that’s who. It may seem like she has accomplished her goals but I have a feeling that this Lady of the Paddock is just getting started.

ith the first round of the World SuperBike Championship in the record books, the fever for the 2012 race season is palpable. AMA, BSB, WSBK or MotoGP... it doesn’t matter. There have been so many rumblings and changes in the “silly season” that have added a heavy dose of excitement to the 2012 road race paddocks across the globe. New teams. New riders. New Machines. New rules. And everyone is gunning for the number one plate. The 2012 AMA Pro Racing schedule has received a boost with the addition of three brand new events produced by the race event promotion team at M1 Powersports. Led by Cameron Gray and I-San Hung, M1 is a staple in the AMA paddock and the originators of the Big Kahuna Double Header races. Seasoned and experienced Larry Pegram will once again take the charge for the Foremost Insurance Pegram Racing SuperBike Team. Pegram is more than the rider, he is team owner and manager. The 2011 season proved to be a development year for the team aboard the #72 BMW S1000RR. Pegram finished the 2011 season in seventh place with a total of three finished in the top five. THE GRID: 2012 roadrace season preview Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki team of Cory West and Benny Solis. West earned eight top five finishes in 2011. Solis had an amazing introductory year in the AMA last season with three poles, four wins and a second place finish in the points standings. “I am very ecstatic with our rider line-up this season! I have been friends with Cory West for such a long time and I have seen the amazing things he can do while racing a motorcycle. I feel super honored to finally have him as a rider on a program I am running. Then there is Benny Solis, that kid is such an incredible rider and a little firecracker. I can’t wait to “If I say that I want to win is common place because I think every single rider in the world that goes racing wants to win. My goal is to enter the top six for the showdown and fight hard the last three races to have the best result I can. I know how high will be the level this year in BSB but I am in love with the new rules that took away any electronic control from the bikes and also this is one of the reasons why I accepted to race in the UK. As I said, I know the level will be high but I am not scared. I already beat some of the top guys in some World Championship races and I am ready for the battle. It will be a tough season and I am very confident about my team and bike level. For sure, we will have a lot of fun.” - Luca Scassa 38 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

“I have done what I possibly could to prepare myself physically and mentally to get in shape for the 2012 season. So my expectations? I have got no clue what I am capable of yet and my aim is to get the best out of me every time I practice or race, to learn something and improve every time, to keep pushing and doing what I can in every dimension to eventually get to the point when I know thats the best I can do. I don’t know how long it will take but its definitely not only one season. I race because I love it and I want to win. My mindset is: Take one step at the time, focus on what you do at the time, set realistic expectations every time you ride and the result will follow... and stay calm no matter what” - Sandra Stammova. see him battle with the boys in DSB this year, that class is going to be nuts!” - Bree Poland, Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki Team Manager. THE GRID: 2012 roadrace season preview A favorite to U.S. race fans and 2007 AMA Pro Racing Rookie of the Year, Luca “The Rocker” Scassa joins the BSB from the World SuperSport series in which he earned three race wins. After a learning year in BSB, Sandra Stammova is returning to the grid to show the fellas how it’s done. Back in shape and recovered from injury and surgery, Stammova is looking forward to the 2012 season. The World SuperBike Series started off on an unfortunate note. The passing of Oscar McIntyre at the opening round of the World SuperStock series at Phillip Island marred an otherwise exciting race weekend. Max Biaggi is once again setting the tone as he challenges the current champ, Carlos Checa for supremacy. Biaggi won race one and went on to place second in race two behind Checa of the opening round. He currently leads the series in points. WSS Champion Chaz Davies steps into the SuperBike arena for 2012 onboard his #19 Parkingo MTC Racing Aprilia. As always, the WSBK round at Miller Motorsports Park is alway a great event that often times, gives AMA Pro Racing stars a chance to shine in the wild card position.

THE GRID

The baker’s dozen One man. Twelve topics. One opinion... HIS! Words: Phil baker

25 years of WSBK: The championship has developed into a program that is on par with MotoGP as far as excitement is concerned. All of the manufacturers tend to be in this class which just shows how much they all respect the coverage that can be gained from such involvement. I doubt it will ever emulate MotoGP for being the number one form of racing, but the excitement and close racing still make it a great spectacle to follow. Oscar McIntyre: There really is very little to be said in such sad circumstances other than to relay heartfelt and sincere condolences to his family. We all know the dangers that the sport carries with it and have seen similar tragedies over recent years. But being a parent, you can only imagine what the poor family is going through. I wish them God’s strength in this terribly difficult time.

Max Biaggi: Anywhere that Max goes, he will attract a large following and this is of course to WSBK’s advantage. His talent and charisma are a plus for any championship and the way he rode in the recent race at Phillip Island just goes to show that he has lost none of his ability. Go Max! And good luck for the rest of the season.

Casey Stoner... Fatherhood: Casey tends to keep his private life very much to himself and I am sure that fatherhood has changed him in much the same way it changes all of us. To be traveling the world with a young family at home is very difficult. Will it change his focus on the job in hand? Very unlikely, in my view. Casey is a winner and as long as he is up there fighting for history, I see little change in his professional approach to his job.

Josh Hayes in MotoGP: Josh deserves to be in the GP fold. He showed tremendous maturity in Valencia at the end of last year and rode incredibly well. He is a deserving champion and it would be great to see him in the paddock and on the track of GP’s as he is good enough to mix it with the best.

Sandra Stammova in BSB: The more girls we can get in motorcycle racing, the better. Look at Danica Patrick in 4 wheels. We need good female riders out there as their following will naturally bring a new fan base to the sport. Good luck to her.

Are MotoGP Pilots... Aliens?: I think that this is a title that you have to earn. Rossi was an alien, but right now, only time will tell if he is still an alien. Alien tends to go to those who have won a race in a year. Based on this, you could count the two Honda and two Yamaha riders. So, yes, four of them are currently aliens. It will be interesting to see who the aliens are by the end of the season. But my guess is the same four, with Stoner as Chief Alien. Agostini VS Rossi... Hypothetically speaking, both at the top of their game, who would win?: Hypothetically speaking, both at the top of their game, who would win? - I’ve always said that the F1 cars of the fifties showed incredible skill: no ABS or electronics that can correct errors that you make. in other words, it was more down to the rider and how he sets up the bike. That said, Valentino is a master, who when given the best machinery has proven himself time and time again. Based on the records that exist, I’m going to go with Agostini. How do you know which tire compound to go with?: They have become a lot easier to decide upon as the teams and riders are now restricted to the number of tires they can use over a weekend. Personally, I preferred it when there were two tire manufacturers involved and that way they were constantly competing to better one another. Now, of course, we have just one manufacturer and good or bad, that’s what you have to work with. Decisions on compounds are discussed between riders and crew chiefs, but as you have seen, most tend to decide upon the same compounds in any given race.

Top 3 champions of all time: Giacomo Agostini, Mike Hailwood, Kenny Roberts Sr. Followed by Mick Doohan and Barry Sheene.

Who to keep an eye on AMA SuperBike 2012: I‘m really hoping that Roger Lee Hayden can show how good he really is and come away with wins to match his brothers. He has so much talent as a rider and would be a great lift for the U.S. sport to see him succeed. Keep an eye on young Cameron Beaubier, as well. Not only a great guy but certainly the one to watch in my view for up and coming young Americans with the potential to move over to Europe and compete at the top level.

What is the best foreign race to attend for an American race fan experience? : Well, Silverstone is good, as it is in England and we speak the same language. Plus, I expect that most visitors to a race will be also sightseeing and there’s lots of heritage back in the Motherland. A great one for the boys is the Czech Republic. That place is humming at night time and the atmosphere is awesome. The track is very cool and great viewing in a natural bowl.

To be a solid competitor in the AMA national series, To improve as a rider and racer through training both on and off track. To compete at the international level, racing in Europe is awesome! And to branch out to do as much racing as possible. I eventually want to race some Endurance races (night riding is my favorite) and the Isle of Man. Accomplishments: 2011 was amazing for me (only my third year of racing). Not only did I do the full West Coast AMA season this year, I was also asked to race an CRP electric bike with the FIM in the Laguna Seca and Le Mans rounds of the ePower series. I became the first female to race an electric bike at the international level and I took 5th place in the FIM ePower Championship. Indianapolis was another milestone for me, I was asked to ride the HOG Racing Vance & Hines XR1200 at the race at Indy. Unknown to me before race weekend, I’d become the first female ever to race a motorcycle at Indy in the history of the track. I was also the first female to race in the XR1200 class. Having several “first”s and racing at the National and International levels in the US and Europe are huge accomplishments for me. Define your passion in one sentence:

his past February, I had the opportunity to attend the 2012 Dealer Expo in Indiana, Indianapolis. It was a sight to see. The show had dealers from all around the world. I’m talking tire representatives, apparel and safety gear, engine parts manufacturers... the list is endless. Needless to say, what ever you could have possibly thought of it was there. I was so excited that I felt like I had recieved the last golden ticket to go to Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. This was my second year attending but my first year being there with one of my amazing sponsors Speed and Strength. When I first got to the booth I saw this huge poster of me and I started to freak out! I was super excited and overwhelmed. I

had been scouting photo shoot locations for ICON’s LIMITER 4 magazine for a few weeks when I found Die, a picturesque French village nestled in the Alps. It was just perfect: quaint, quiet... an ideal location to snap some portraits and maybe pop some wheelies without anyone getting too upset. We started the morning early as frost desaturated the French landscape and I could see my breath as I pulled on my helmet. “We’re going to Die today,” I said, pronouncing it like any American would pronounce the word “die”. The French people I was with snickered and told me it’s pronounced DEE. I just hoped it wasn’t some type of metaphor for the day as I threw my leg over my moto. My ride: a wet black Triumph Daytona 675... a real heartbreaker. I know she broke mine when I had to give her up at the end of the day. The day warmed up slowly, but the air re-cooled as we started our ascent up into the mountains. The Alps, every bit as grand as one could imagine, I had the feeling I was riding into a storybook. The mountains’ broad sloping sides were splashed with greens, yellows, oranges and the occasional patchwork of a rocky vineyard. I felt pretty lucky as I leaned through a curve, thinking, a responsive throttle and these roads could keep a person content for life. We reached our destination and setup for a few shots, naturally attracting the attention of spectators and “bar pillars” as they refer to the men who hang out at bars full time in tiny villages. We glanced at the clock as we ordered a coffee, feeling out of place as everyone else in the joint was

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 67

The Rev LIMITER: VIOLET STARS... polishing off their second beer of the morning. After a few hours in Die, our work was through and we headed to our second destination which was an obscure bridge in the village of Rochebaudin, population 123. My sights became set on this particular bridge thanks to a random Flickr image. The original shot depicted a winter sunset, a desolate French countryside and a bridge connecting two sides of the tiny village that appeared to be built into the sides of cliffs. I’m sure this particular place had never been a destination for anyone, but there was something that captivated me about the location and I had to explore why. After a few hours we were out of the Alps and navigating

68 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

through the insanity that are the French “back roads;” more aptly described as a hellish maze linked by a dizzying amount of roundabouts. As we headed south the landscape slowly began revealing the rocky limestone scars that cover its Mediterranean coastline, indicating we were nearing Provence. We took a final right hand turn into a valley that looked similar to my Flickr photo and my Triumph seemed to announce our arrival sending a Daytona rumble bouncing off each side of the rocky cliffs. We reached a large arch cut through a mountainside and after passing through it I was on my bridge at last. The village was eerily quiet, numerous houses were built into the side of each rock cliff with steep cobblestone

roads linking them but not a person in sight. There was a church on each cliff, facing each other, perhaps historically representing a time when the bridge did not conveniently link the town. The area’s seclusion contributed to the feeling I had discovered my hidden treasure. My initial concept for the shoot was to recreate the flickr panorama that had inspired me in the first place. But after sending my photographer hiking up the mountain and placing him precariously on an ancient crumbling stairway, the shot was not as effective as I had hoped. Sure the scenery was brilliant, but I was a grayish blob streaking across the bridge, certainly not the powerful image I wanted.

We scrapped the idea and prepared for plan B: a wheelie. One of my life mottos, “When in doubt, do a stunt!” As my Kawi warmed up I cautiously approached the edge of the bridge and peered over. The miraculous “cliff houses” eventually gave way to a rocky crevice, so deep in the earth it appeared no plant life could grow. I decided it was best not to think about the various outcome permutations to this scenario. I could do a wheelie and that is what I would do. After a few minutes of wheelies, some life trickled out of the houses to catch the show. I did my best to hold the Kawi at 12 o’clock over the crested, narrow bridge and we captured the truly grand moment as best we could on digital film. After shooting a few different angles for the bridge wheelie picture we decided to call it a day before the villagers stopped being entertained and started being annoyed. The only cafe in town had just reopened for the evening and we sat down for some lemonade and famous French appetizers. As the sun sank lower in the sky I reflected on the day’s work which had not gone as planned, but these things never do. I guess photo shoots are like motorcycle rides, you can select a destination but you can’t plan what will happen on the way. That’s probably why motorcyclists get along so well, we are all eager to enjoy life’s surprises together.

improve your skills

The crash factor words: Eric wood images: Brian Nitto

T

he last time that I was able to remember the number of crashes that I have had in my career probably dates back to the mid 1990’s. This is certainly not a point of great pride, but it is a fact. After 23 years of racing and 18 years of instructing at the Penguin School, I’ve had the opportunity to both witness and experience first hand almost every type of crash that there is. This experience has provided a sizeable pool of data that is extremely helpful identifying the causes of on-track incidents. As such, I try to pass this information on to my students to help them avoid the most frequent mistakes I have seen. Most crashes can be reasonably explained. It’s easy to understand how a rider can low-side on the entrance of a corner and high-side on the way out. Those incidents are the result of asking too much of the tire that is under the greatest load at the time of the fall. However, in this article we are going to discuss a common crash with a cause that

90 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 91

improve your skills: THE CRASH FACTOR not always easy for a rider to diagnose – the exit low-side. First, let’s look at a random corner and discuss what is happening with front grip. In order to do this, we need to break the turn into segments. Turns will be broken into the major braking zone (red), the turn initiation zone (yellow), the major turn zone (green) and the acceleration zone (blue). The length of these zones will vary from corner to corner, but after this discussion we will be able to apply these concepts to any turn. There are always going to be corners having characteristics that don’t allow the zones to always be identified so clearly, but we will use a classic corner as our basis for discussion.

To understand any crash, a rider needs to determine what actions consume the available grip. In the major braking zone, the bike is usually completely upright and the front tire has 100% of its grip to contribute to braking forces. In the turn initiation zone, the bike begins to arc towards the turn point and braking is partially reduced as the tire needs to allocate some grip to turning. The major turn zone, which is usually the shortest zone, is the area where braking loads are released and the front tire is fully committed to turning. During the acceleration zone the front tire needs to have available grip to finish the turn. The need for side grip is usually greatest immediately after the major turn zone and then fades to zero as the motorcycle becomes fully

upright. When looking back at the turn diagram, the acceleration zone is the longest of all the turn segments. The biggest danger for the exit low-side is in the first 25% of the acceleration zone. The slower the bike is traveling, the harder it will accelerate. The harder a bike accelerates, the more weight it transfers to the rear tire (and away from the front tire). As the front tire becomes lighter, it takes an increasingly smaller amount of bar input to cause a loss of traction. This is where riders run into an issue (the beginning of the blue zone). The corners with the biggest risks for exit low-sides are long corners that lead to a straightaway. When riders come past the apex of these corners, they often have not got enough of the turn finished and are forced to finish a significant portion of the corner after the apex. This is bad. These riders are often required to give the bike extra turning effort while their track counterparts are accelerating away from them. As a result, these riders are adding bar input (asking more of the front tire) while adding throttle input (taking weight off the front tire). This is a bad combination that can be made even worse if there is a bump or transition in the middle of the exit. The problem the exit low-side is often solved by repeating a simple phrase during the exit of every corner, “Gas on, Bike up”. If you ever feel yourself adding

92 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

bar input after the apex in a corner that leads to a straight, it means that you did not get enough of the turn done before the apex. Release the bar input, ease back on the throttle, reduce the twisting load on the front end and finish the turn later in the exit. As soon as you ease off the throttle the bike will carve a tighter arc. The next lap, you will need to make a more decisive major turn in order to be pointed more

up the track at the apex. Often this change requires a small reduction in entrance speed or a slightly wider corner entrance. Sometimes a rider simply needs to make the turn more forcefully (remembering that big bar inputs MUST happen while nearly upright and NOT as the bike increases in lean angle). This is one of those critical situations that require a rider to give a little in order to get a lot back in return. Giving up a couple mph during the major turn zone of the corner

in exchange for a couple extra mph in the acceleration zone is nearly always a good trade – especially in our example where the acceleration zone is 5-6 times longer than the turn zone. Experimenting with this technique is a good way to help judge corner exit speed. In a classic, drive-focused corner, the tightest part of the turn should be in the middle of the major turn zone. From this point forward, the line should open up steadily SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 93

improve your skills: THE CRASH FACTOR until it is completely straight. Any tightening of the line after the major turn zone diminishes the ability to accelerate. If a rider can tighten the line while accelerating, this is a clear signal that the tires are not close to the limit of traction and that roll speed could be higher. If the rider is already on the limit of traction, additional bar input is likely to cause a the tires to slide. Imagine riding in a 10 mile by 10 mile parking lot and being issued the challenge to carve the tightest arc you can at 60 mph. You would accelerate to 60mph

94 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and then tighten the corner more and more until the bars became heavy in your hands – indicating that the front tire is approaching it’s limit. At this point, if the throttle is rolled on (as you would exiting a corner), the increase in speed will force the bike to stand up. If you increase the force on the bars to maintain your present arc, it is likely that you will exceed traction. However, if you relax on the bars you can (almost) accelerate as hard as you want without consequence. The only thing that will happen is that the motorcycle will stand up. If you roll the throttle on slowly,

the bike will widen its arc slowly. If you roll it on quickly, it will stand up quickly. When these concepts are applied to the exit of a corner, riders are learning to steer the bike with the throttle. Obtaining this critical skill is perhaps the biggest step for an Amateur rider in the progression towards Expert status. It all starts with a simple phrase, “Gas on, Bike up”. Like many concepts in track riding, the very same tactics that make you safer also make you faster.

2011 BSB Champion, Tommy Hill and Phil Collen

PHIL COLLEN The Music Behind I, SUPERBIKER 2: The Showdown Words: Billy Morrison Images: Helen Collen

I

was laying around watching reruns of “Lockup Raw” and drinking coffee when the phone rang. It was Allan Lane (the Big Cheese and Head Honcho around these parts). “I’ve got an idea,” he said. “Go down and meet with Def Leppard lead guitarist Phil Collen and interview him about bikes and music. He just did music for the ‘I, Superbiker films’.” Hmmm… let me see. Go hang out with one of my favorite guitar players and talk about all the

things I love to do myself? Does the Pope shit in the woods? Are bears catholic? Of course! And that’s how I found myself sitting with Phil in his lounge, playing with his beautiful dogs and discussing what he’s up to. SBI: The marriage of music and motorcycles can often suffer from the stereotyped image of a guy with a big beer gut on a Harley with a Lynrd Skynrd patch… Which you are definitely not! So how does the Def Leppard lead guitarist and a film maker

passionate about motorcycles join forces? Phil Collen: Well, Mark is a close friend of Paul Cook. They go to Chelsea together and he also has this Rock TV Station over there, videoing bands and stuff. He is a huge champion of Manraze. So when the first movie came out, he asked me if we could write a song for it. He gave me the key words, told me the movie was called “I, Superbiker”… and the song just wrote itself. The second movie, “I, Superbiker 2”, is so SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 99

FRICTION ZONE: Phil collen exciting. You gotta see it. What a season! Anyway, once the movie was done, I’d already met Tommy Hill (the BSB Champion), so this time we did an electronic dance track with Debi BlackwellCook, who sings her ass off. SBI: Yeah I watched the video. It’s a great song and she’s fantastic. I’ve been a fan of the Manraze sound since I heard the first tracks. Was the combination of Dub and Rock the true product of a Sex Pistol and a Leppard getting in a room together or was it born of a conversation? PC: Well, it is actually what comes out: the true product. But we did have that conversation as well. Me and Simon were sitting around my house in London and we just started writing songs together. And I said to Simon, “Wouldn’t it be great to hear Cookie drum on this stuff?” And I literally ran into Paul on the street a couple of days later! When we talked, he said he liked Reggae as well as the rock and punk stuff and the Manraze sound just kinda developed from there into its own thing. SBI: Are you a rider now? What’s your story around motorcycles? What was your first bike? PC: On my 17th birthday I got a Honda CB250, passed my test, and became a motorcycle courier in London. SBI: I have a lot of respect for that! I was also a motorcycle 100 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

courier there and that’s not an easy job... riding around the West End all day, every day in all weather. You gotta be able to ride! PC: Yeah, it’s a tough job! Very dangerous. So from that came the two stroke Suzuki 250 and other bikes I used to fly around on. My Dad used to ride as well, an old BMW. And through tinkering with my bikes, he got back into it and bought a Kawasaki 400. Way too fast for him! But it was interesting because I kinda got away and out of the scene, and came back to it ten years later, took a ride on a bike and I was petrified! I would call myself a bike enthusiast now. I don’t ride any more. SBI: Let’s talk about the day job! I was looking at the numbers for the “other” band, Def Leppard, and they are pretty stunning. 100 million albums. Double Diamond satus. Does that sink in? The enormity of what you’ve achieved? PC: Not while we were in the middle of the craziness. But eventually, yes. But when we got the Diamond for Hysteria, it was the first time they’d had a Diamond award. And, you know, I look around and there’s Elton John, Billy Joel, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd… all in the same room! And that’s when it hit home.

SBI: And to come from where you’ve come from, and to be now celebrating a 30 year career with the same band, it must be slightly weird. 30 years doing anything is an achievement, but 30 years in a band, which is like a marriage really, is quite astounding. How do you do that? PC: Well, certain things drew us all together very closely. We

“Oh, it doesn’t sound like Def Leppard. Where’s the polish?’” SBI: Does that annoy you? PC: Yeah. I mean in a way. It was more Def Leppard than some of the other stuff. We recorded the backing tracks kinda live, banging ‘em out in a house in Spain, which was great fun. But when you have restrictions, a ceiling if you like, a narrow pathway… it’s restrictive for a band. SBI: Do you still all get in a room and see what happens?

MAN RAZE (L to R) Paul Cook, Phil Collen and Simon Laffy had Rick’s accident, obviously. Steve’s death. You become very protective of each other. And originally we had Mutt Lange pushing us to help us cross over, to get the harmonies without sounding soft. He said to us, “The vocals should sound like the Pistols... shouting. But in tune, and not sounding like Journey!” He really pushed us and made it very special for us.

PC: Well, not like that, no. The last thing we did, we did three songs separately. Joe wrote one, Sav wrote one, and I wrote one with CJ, my writing partner in LA and we all played on each other’s tracks. And that definitely worked. A bit like Queen ended up. So I think going into the next thing, I think we would do the odd song. Not a whole album, because of the time, and energy involved, plus the industry has changed.

SBI: But what happens now, 30 years in, when you guys get in a room together to make a record. I mean you have already produced so much material. Does it still happen the way it did then?

SBI: Yeah, I wanted to ask you about that. Do you embrace the whole social media side of things?

PC: No, not really. It’s harder. It’s difficult when you do try to be a bit experimental. In the 90’s we put out an album called “Slang”, which nobody liked! I mean, we liked it! But what we got was…

PC: Yes I do. I love it. I’m on Twitter. I think it’s amazing. For so long, the artist has taken it up the arse. Leppard had a really good deal back in the day and that was only about 30%! And SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 101

FRICTION ZONE: Phil collen

that’s all fine while the labels are working hard. But then labels stop working bands and they still want the lion’s share. The web and the different arenas now available to bands have opened up so many possibilities for the artist. And we can bring fans in through social media, tying it in through lots of different areas. I have a fitness DVD coming out and I was at the Fitness Expo the other day. The web and that stuff enables me to tie that in. 102 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

SBI: Leppard shows are particularly “Enormodome” gigantic affairs. Don’t you miss the 400 capacity sweaty club vibe? PC: I’m lucky. I get that from Manraze. It’s so different. No “in ear” monitors and we can go off into a section and jam out or whatever. In Leppard, we can’t really go off on a tangent. It has to be like that because the songs are so structured. So I get the best of both worlds really!

SBI: So what other ‘motorcyclecentric’ things can we expect from you? PC: Well, I just did this thing with Brett Michaels. He’s a motocross guy and he asked me to get involved with something. Literally, I had just got back from London with “I, Superbiker 2” and here I was getting involved with another motorcycle project. It just happened. SBI: Just to finish where we

started, how do you think the music world and the motorcycle industry can help each other? PC: Like you said, the whole “beer gut/Harley thing”… I mean for things to work, they’ve gotta be sexy. And that’s not really sexy, is it?! It has to come from the riders as well.

You know, back in the 70’s, with Barry Sheene. I mean, he came off as a sexy guy. They’ve made other sports sexy. MMA is huge right now, and has a real “tough guy” thing going on. And the “Gladiator” vibe of “I, Suberbiker” is spot on. These guys are modern day gladiators. Phil will be ever present in 2012.

He has a new signature Jackson guitar coming out and will be performing at AOL Live in March. His fitness DVD will be hitting the streets and “I, Superbiker 2” will be in theatres soon with the Manraze track leading the way, and of course, you can see Phil doing what he does best... Playing guitar with Def Leppard on the road this year.

y adventure started when I told my editor, Allan Lane AKA Sergio (“Get Him to the Greek”) that my New Year’s resolutions were centered on my riding and abilities. I decided that there is no distinction in just talking about improvement... I had to begin the process of improving. After reading my resolutions, Allan called to give me some advice... “I don’t want you to get some old white guy to train you. I want some young bull! Ya’ dig me?” Things led to things that led to things and I was put in touch with Jake Shoemaker. Jake Shoemaker is the 18 year old wonder who

108 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

is coming off winning the 2011 Springfield Mile. I was more than pumped until he asked me whether or not I had a “metal shoe”. It suddenly dawned on me that I could possibly be in over my head and putting my not so spry body at risk in this venture. Metal shoe, notwithstanding, Jake and I made arrangements to meet up on a Sunday to start my program. The normal track that Jake used to train had been washed out thanks to heavy rains the week before so I called a few of my friends to find a place we could use. Not only did I find a spot but I had friends volunteer to show up and watch

the beating. For posterity’s sake professional photographer and cinematographer Ed Buffman offered to capture the experience on film. Ed has known me for awhile and is familiar with my street bike riding abilities and was ready to see just how well I could do. Have I mentioned that I haven't ridden dirt in nearly 20 years? The track I found for us is a “TT” style: flat, a few corners and a jump in it. Thats right, I said a jump. After 20 years away from dirt, a jump... Wow. Why did I choose flat track of all things? Because it’s a gladiator sport. It is to motorcycle racing what

jazz is to music: the beginning. Watching the bikes sliding through the corners, riders furiously drafting down the straight, the sound of the engines, the smell of the dirt as it’s kicked-up… it’s all intoxicating.

like a rag doll, desperately trying to find my footing. Meanwhile, Ed is laughing so hard that he has tears streaming down his face all while simultaneously giving me the thumbs up as he photographed it all.

I started my day with stretching because I was about to put my body through the ringer. I bend down to touch my toes and fell far short. Jake on the other hand can bend far enough to place his palms flat on the ground. I realized that I was in big trouble. We headed to the where Jake was gracefully sliding his bike in smooth, fluid movements. I, on the other hand, am flailing about

After a few beatings, Jake flags me over to official start class. I was ok into the left hand turn but needed to raise my right elbow up high and my body would follow. On a street bike, my weight would be inboard. On a dirt bike I need to move my weight outboard. All my years of street bike riding and racing weren’t helping me in this setting. I basically need to forget

everything. Jake schools me a but before sending me back out. After a few laps I felt better about my progress. Toward the end of the day I got better and more ballsy. I kept in mind in mind that I can’t cause Jake to crash because it could ruin his entire season. I had to control my chaos. I shared with Jake my concerns about being cautious. Big mistake. The later laps of the day, Jake tears into the first left hander and sails up my inside, moving me out of his way. Jake laughed, “You road racer guys.” On the same turn on the final lap, Jake is coming up my

FRICTION ZONE: RIDING DIRTY inside again so I close the door right on his 18 year old Springfield Mile smugness... to no avail Jake comes in hot, takes a tighter line, slides sideways, hits my left peg with his rear wheel, and rockets out of the corner, all while showering me with dirt. I did manage to stay upright and on the gas. I took a few hits, learned a lot and earned some dirt “props” all in one day. It hadn’t occurred to me just how physically challenging my adventure would be until the day after when I’m back to work. I was limping, my arms were sore, my neck hurt, my shoulder was out of whack, my body felt like the 46 years old it is. Despite all the aches and pains I felt really good about my day spent with Jake; I learned some new skills and I crossed one item off my resolutions list. Now I’m on to the next resolution and the potential pain that may bring. In the meantime I should probably stock up on BenGay…lots of it.

The following is an actual email that I received from a Mr. Jamie Kelly. You can’t make this type of stuff up...

Jamie, I’m Sorry to hear that you don’t care much for our magazine but I think that you have us confused with another publication. We have never featured “gangs” or “posers”. We feature quality content from industry insiders that include professional road and drag racers, instructional articles from one of the country’s top riding schools, technical articles from AMA pro mechanics, to name a few. Further, the clubs that we do feature ride at the highest level and most of them would probably invite you to one of their track days for some fun. Regarding your comment on “Blacks”... I’m not really sure what you are referring to. Sportbikes Inc Magazine is one of the most culturally diverse magazines in publication, if not the most. For the record, I am Black. So if you have a problem with Black people, you would have a problem with me. Thus having a problem with SportBikes Inc Magazine would almost seem logical. Again, I think you have us confused with another magazine. No worries. I will cancel your free subscription and remove you from the distribution list. Best, Allan Lane

this life: The World View of Motorcycles Words: Tyson Beckford Images: Courtesy of Ducati Abu Dhabi

A

s I travel through the streets of Paris, London and Dubai I find that riders are all the same worldwide. We all love and respect our machines. Cars, buses and trucks are still the enemy of the road. We are bonded by this thing called the motorcycle. The motorcycle was once looked at as the machine of the “bad boys”. It has now become not only a movie icon but a fashion icon, in itself. I am currently in Paris and was shopping at the DSquared2 store, of which there are only two in the world. This year’s collection is based on motorcycles and it was captured well. Even my old boss Ralph Lauren recently launched a cafe racer style collection line for his Black Label. More and more designers are taking from our world and culture, the style and essence of the motorcycle. Before Paris, I had the opportunity to visit Dubai. The streets of Dubai are filled with high end bikes and the road conditions are perfect for dragging knees with smooth turns and long straight aways for high speed acceleration. Not to mention, there are no posted speed limits... but watch for the cameras. The cameras are always watching. All in all, the best way to travel in Europe and Dubai is by motorcycle. staff stuff ALPINESTARS • ARTIC DS GLOVES Tyson Beckford My connect at Alpinestars, Emily sent me the Arctic DS Gloves. Trust me when I tell you that at 60mph in 32 degree weather, these gloves work! The construction is the same as all Alpinestars products: built to last and tested thru and thru! To own a pair and test for yourself is the best way to know if they work. And if they’re not “all that”... you can slap Allan Lane when you see him! Just kidding! Unless he really needs one, feel free. Just use baby powder so you don’t hurt your hand. (Editor’s Note: I always wondered what the baby powder was for.) The Arctic Gloves are a part of Alpinestars’ Drystar collection. I’ve personally tested these gloves and recommend them for those of us that live in cold climate areas around the world http://alpinestars.com Rating: 6 (out of 6) ICON MOTOSPORTS • VARIANT HELMET Allan Lane I’ve worn a lot of helmets. Different manufacturers, different versions and styles... But when I’m about to hit the streets, my “go to” helmet is the ICON Variant. Let’s side step the bad ass factor for a second... a Barista did tell me that it looked like something that Batman would wear. I corrected her and said, “I’m Blackman.” I digress. The Variant offers above average visibility which is perfect for the concrete jungle, the back roads or the high ways. At speed, the venting system minimizes the expected head wobble because of the off road style design. I’ve worn this helmet from LA to Vegas, Daytona to Philadelphia and so many places in between with no head shake. It could be lighter in weight but I’m a bigger guy so its not a major factor. This is just a comfortable, cool ass piece of gear. My other helmets are a bit jealous. But my Variant and I got a special thing going on. http://rideicon.com Rating: 6 (out of 6) 128 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
