FROM THE EDITOR

SLOW YOUR ROLL And so it begins... Spring has barely arrived and I’m already seeing social media posts of crashed bikes, videos of risky moto shenanigans, and memorials to riders that have recently passed away. While I completely understand and frequently indulge in the need to take risks at higher speeds... I’ve found the solace in taking those adrenaline-laced risks in the proper environment.

loose on the track. “Slow your roll...” is something that I would hear the old heads say when I younger. Now that I’m considered an old head, I find those words slipping from my mouth often when talking to younger riders who think that bike life equates only to the streets. It's no wonder that a vast majority of the nonsense that I see on social media happens on the street. So when I say slow your roll, what I mean is re-evaluate the means that you express your passion. In other words, if you slow down, you just might go a little faster.

I’m slightly older now. Slightly wiser. I’ve always been a dice roller. It’s just that now, I’m not just strategic, I’m advanced to a tactical level of not just when I roll the dice, but where and how I roll the dice. I am more apt to cruise when riding on Best, the streets, roads and highways. There's Allan a time and a place for everything. I cut @mrblackmoses 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MARCH 2021

INDUSTRY NEWS 2022 SUZUKI HAYABUSA FIRST LOOKS

A Bird of Prey - New looks, new electronics and a revamped engine top the billing for the $18,599 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa. After a few years of hype, talk and tease, Suzuki has released their third generation of its Hayabusa. The 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa is finally here with a selection of upgrades to its engine, electronics and more importantly, a new look. The 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa resembles more now than ever, its namesake spirit animal, the Peregrine Falcon. Compared to the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Hayabusa, the 2022 model has sharper and more definitive linework. It's sharper and streamlined. Clean yet aggressive side panels are sleekly vented. The tail section draws your eyes with its flowing yet strong redesign. A new, lighter symmetrical twin silencer exhaust system offers a better flow and a rousing exhaust tone. A new striking front end features full LED lighting with a projector and multi-plane headlight. The front position lights and taillights at the rear have integrated turn signals, eliminating the need for protruding turn signal stalks, which are usually the first bike mod that many owners make to help improve aerodynamics. The 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa's 1340cc, four-cylinder, double overhead camshaft engine is redesigned with new ride-by-wire electronic throttle bodies with dual fuel injectors. Those injectors, combined with the pressurized air inducted from the Suzuki Ram Air Direct (SRAD) intakes make the 2022 Hayabusa the fastest and smoothest accelerating Hayabusa ever. The Hayabusa’s twin-spar aluminum frame is revamped. Combined with the adjustable KYBsupplied suspension, and refined aerodynamics, the ride is more stable and more nimble than previous Hayabusa models. THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA MT-09

26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MARCH 2021

THE MT-09 MADE its debut in 2014. A second generation of the MT-09 with more technology as well as styling and performance upgrades was unveiled in 2017. The third generation 2021 MT-09 represents an almost complete overhaul of Yamaha's hyper-naked leading machine. Before jumping into the MT-09's newly engineered CP3 engine, its visuals must be appreciated. Refined, the 2021 MT-09 looks ever more so a threat to the asphalt than its predecessors. It has fully embraced its internal dark side, right in line with its brand's mission. If it doesn't serve a purpose, it has not been included in the design or construction of the MT-09. Compared to prior models, the 2021 model reflects an aggressive, purpose-built configuration. At a profile view, the nose of the 2021 model, where the newly designed LED headlamp is mounted, is shorter, whereas the 2020 model has elements of overhang, throughout. The 2021 MT, from tail tip to front of nose is more compact, focusing the center of mass around the engine. A new fuel tank is flanked by functional air intake funnels. The 2021 MT-09 was designed to look powerful, torquey, fast, free and fun, just as much as it performs. Surrounding the new CP3 engine is the MT-09's new frame and subframe. These two elements of the bike's chassis are part of the MT-09's success in dropping some pounds. Yamaha claims the 2021 model tips the scales at a wet weight of 417 pounds, down 8 pounds from the previous model. This is achieved because of the new geometry of the new controlled filling die-cast aluminum frame and the material of the subframe. The new configuration includes a 30mm lower steering head pipe and new engine mounting points. The 2020 model's subframe was composed of steel. The 2021 MT-09's subframe is composed, just as the frame is, by controlled filling die-cast MARCH 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 27

THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA MT-09 aluminum technology. The new subframe alone shaves off almost 3.5 pounds. The frame and new box-shaped welded aluminum swingarm, together account for just over 5 pounds in the MT-09's weight reduction. Mounted inside the new chassis structure is the MT-09's new three-cylinder CP3 powerplant. Performance output on the 2021 MT-09 is increased by 43 ccs. Its predecessor produced an output of 847 ccs. The 2021 model provides 890 ccs with credit to the new pistons forged with concave-shaped tops, a new crankshaft, and 1.5mm shorter split connecting rods. Other new engine highlights include new intake and exhaust camshafts, new cam chains, and a new oil pressure-type cam chain tensioner. An added 6 percent boost in the torque department is also a welcomed perk. The gearbox receives an updated assisted and slipper clutch, new clutch friction plate materials, and a 3 percent taller ratio in first and second gear. This is all translates into smoother shifting and delivery of the bike's vigorous torque. The air induction system is removed from the 2021 MT-09 intake system and now features three tuned intake ducts and new throttle bodies with integrated injectors that are aimed directly at the intake valve heads. The new intake system improves fuel management by 11 percent. A new compact 1.5 chamber design (the prior model used a 3 chamber design) stainless steel dual exhaust system also helps with the weight reduction of the new MT-09. The new system is more attractive and works well with the flow of the bike's overall design and aesthetic. Combined, the exhaust and the engine are 3.747 pounds lighter than the previous MT-09. The 2021 model offers adjustable riding positions to adapt to the many shapes and sizes of today's motorcyclists. The handlebars can be arranged 30 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MARCH 2021

in two positions with adjustments of 4mm up and 9mm forward from the original point. The footpegs can be adjusted 14mm upward and 4mm back from their stock position. Yamaha's Spinforged technology creates the 2021 MT-09 strong yet lightweight wheels. This method of forging creates a thinner rim and an 11 percent reduction of rotational inertia. The new front and rear wheel design and construction are 7 grams lighter than the 2020 version's wheels. This 2021 MT-09 happily borrows a good

amount of technology from the 2020 YZF-R1. Those familiar with the 2020 R1 may recognize the Nissin front brake master cylinder, the ABSequipped with brake control, the 6-axis IMU, the traction control system and other items in the MT-09 suite of electronics. Of these items, the IMU steps forward and is noteworthy. While it is developed in the same regard and has the same functions as the IMU of the 2020 R1, the IMU of the 2021 MT-09 is half the size. Also outstanding is the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle with Accelerator Position Sensor with Grip... Basically, true ride by wire, also borrowed from the 2020

OHVALE GP-2 190

DAYTONA WORDS: PETER JACKSON IMAGES: OHVALE MARCH 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 43

THE FIRST RIDE: OHVALE GP-2 DAYTONA I’VE ALWAYS BEEN a proponent of small motorcycles and the teachings they can impart to a rider. Small bikes hone a rider’s finite techniques. They magnify mistakes and suffer fools as quickly as your mom. It’s no wonder riders from Valentino Rossi to Josh Herrin to Colin Edwards use different versions of small bikes — road or dirt — to make themselves faster. If it’s good enough for them, you can be damn sure it’s good enough for the rest of us. However, if you’re a regular size human and not a pint-sized MotoGP jockey, there was a problem. Fitment. Ohvale’s GP-0 series of 110, 160 and 190cc motorcycles were devised mainly with kids and teens in mind. But it soon became apparent bigger kids, like me, wanted in on the action.

44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MARCH 2021

As such, the $6495 MSRP Ohvale GP-2 190 Daytona was born. Using the same four-speed 190cc four-stroke single-cylinder motor as the GP-0 190 Daytona and wrapped in a tubular steel chassis, the GP-2 is larger everywhere in the places that matter most. From the handlebar to the seat, you’ve got 3.1 inches more. The seat-to-peg gap has been increased by 2.4 inches. The peg-to-handlebar gap has been stretched a substantial 5.5 inches. And the swingarm is 0.98 inches longer. The big news is the 12-inch wheels. Wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso Scooter SC rubber, these wheels make the Ohvale GP-2 190 Daytona a different beast than before, with a more stable turn-in and more confidence to the rider over the 10-inch

wheels of the GP-0. At a height of 6 foot and 1 inch, I found the GP-0 about as comfortable as a pretzeled yoga position after five laps of my local kart track. Whereas the GP-2 I can ride for four times that distance and still not get sore. The GP-2 comes standard with unadjustable suspension up front with a preload and rebound adjustable shock at the rear. But our test bike came with Italian-made Mupo fully adjustable front suspension, a slipper clutch and an Alfano GPS dash that was shoehorned into Ohvale duties after the company made its name in kart racing. The Alfano dash is a trick piece of kit. Your lap times will flash up on the screen as you ride And you can download all the information to your PC to analyze where you’re fast on the track and where you can make up time. Think of it as a smaller, easier to use version of the Ducati Data Analyzer system found on Ducati’s superbikes. There are funky pieces everywhere on the GP-2. The rearsets are adjustable up to three positions. The Arrow exhaust looks like it’s come straight off the WorldSBK grid. And the gold finish on the frame is worthy of a bike three times the price. But then you ride it… There’s about 20 horsepower on tap for the GP-2 190. And that’s more than enough when you consider the size of the chassis. It’s got a surprising amount of low-down torque for such a little engine. But it loves to live on the redline, maxing out every last ounce of power as you rip into the turn one braking zone. To get the most out of an Ohvale, you need to first locate where you’re comfortable braking on the track. And then increase that distance by at least 30 feet. Then it’s time to take a super late turn-in point, get the ultra-stiff chassis pointed in the right direction and feed the gas in fast and hard. MARCH 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 47

MARCH 2021 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 59

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. TO SAY THIS past year has been unpredictable would be the understatement of the Millenium! Millennium? Yes. Millennium! Was there any solace to last year being so cray-cray? As a matter of fact, there was solace and it came in the form of MotoGP!

VALENTINO ROSSI

The 2020 season was as unpredictable as a Kanye West rant. Eight different winners later and GP crowned a new World Champion that wasn’t named Marquez or Lorenzo for the first time in a decade! This sport was many people’s escape from a drab world full of masks and restrictions. It certainly was for yours truly. Now that nearly a year has passed, we face a world that is nearly the same as the year before but with a slight difference. Last season at this

MARC MARQUEZ That, ladies and gentlemen, is the honest to gosh darn truth. Joan Mir is an excellent Champ but to be fair, in nine seasons, Marquez has only lost one championship. In a head-to-head contest for an entire season with a healthy Marquez, if you had to pick between Marc and the field, I would pick Marc every single time. Marquez just has a different level that few riders can maintain over an entire season.

Riding around for over an hour I was feeling more and more comfortable. Turning into the bowl and hearing only the engine, feeling a calm settle in and being totally in the moment.
