SHARK HELMETS NOW DISTRIBUTED IN THE U.S. BY PACIFIC POWERSPORTS California-based Pacific Powersports Inc is now the U.S. importer and distributor of Shark Helmets. Shark, the French helmet manufacturer, has been in production for the past twenty years and were previously carried in the U.S. by Tucker Rocky.

ABS WILL BE STANDARD ON 2012 MODELS ANNOUNCED BY BMW BMW Motorrad announced that their entire 2012 line up will be equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) as a standard feature. “It’s time for all of us in the motorcycle industry to embrace the benefits of ABS. Extensive testing by safety experts, law enforcement authorities and journalists around the world consistently demonstrates that ABS reduces overall crashes and saves lives.” - Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA.

JAPAN’S EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI AFFECTING U.S. IMPORTS

There is no surprise here and honestly it was expected. Overall motorcycle production from Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki was down 41.5 percent for the month of March when compared to what was produced in March of 2010. Exports from Japan were down 58.5 percent. However, exports from Japan to the U.S. market actually increased in comparison to prior years. Units exported to the U.S. in 2010 were 6,938. That number rose in March 2011 to 14,273.

DUCATI RECALLS DIAVELS AND MULTISTRADAS YAMAHA AND NESBA TEAM UP AGAIN FOR 2011 In its fifth year, the Northeast Sportbike Association and Yamaha Motor Corporation team up for the Sportbike Demo Program. This program offers any licensed rider an opportunity to demo a sportbike from the 2011 Yamaha line-up at a NESBA track day. The program runs from April to September. More info is available at http://www.nesba.com/Info/ Yamaha.htm and http://yamaha-motor.com/ NESBA.

Related to an issue with the steering lock and hands-free device software, Ducati has recalled just over one thousand of the 2011 Diavel and 2010-11 Multistrada. Reportedly, the steering column may fail to disengage while the bikes are “keying on” causing the engine to start. Ducati is currently working on revising the “hands- free” software that is at the root of the problem.

Minus rolling power outages, production at the Arai helmet headquarters was only slightly affected by the Japanese earthquake. Located in Omiya, 200 miles from the epicenter of the quake, the factories suffered minimal damage. More affected were the Arai materials supplied from the surrounding region that suffered greater blows.

2011 SUZUKI GSXR 600

uzuki introduced the GSX-R 600 in 1992 and it has been a staple in the sportbike consumer and competitor markets ever since. Over the years, the GSX-R 600 has proved to be a formidable foe on the track. It offers grunt force and brute power. There’s no denying that it is a weapon.

S

in the aesthetics department, at least not in recent years. Sometime in the mid 2000’s the 600 began to slim down and get aggressive. As the concept of power to weight ratio became more prominent in motorcycle development, the 600 got right with the program.

The 2011 Suzuki GSX-R 600 continues the model’s legacy with its impressive handling and styling with subtle improvements. For starters, it is smaller. Smaller in the sense that it is more compact. The ergonomics are noticeably different with a positive effect on the bike’s handling and balance. The task of centralizing overall mass and improving the power to weight ratio of the 2011 600 model was taken heavy into consideration. The achievements are evident.

The 2011 is sharp in the right places and smooth where it’s supposed to be. The design is simple and appropriate. It makes sense.

ERGONOMICS The 600 has never been lacking 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

The bike is now 80 inches long, 28 inches wide and has wet weight of 413 pounds. The fuel tank has been shortened, lowered and has a capacity of 4.5 gallons. The wheel base is a noticeable 15mm shorter. The lightweight twin spar aluminum frame is made of five cast sections and a cast swingarm both shedding 2.98 lbs and 1.98 lbs, respectively when compared to the 2009 model.

To match the shortened chassis and wheelbase, the bodywork has been redeveloped. Reworked in a wind tunnel, the GSX-R 600 is the most streamlined model in the bike’s history. The bike’s bodywork overhang has been reduced in the front by 2.1 inches and 1.4 inches in the rear. The compacting and shortening serves the purpose of centralizing the mass of the machine and the rider. The ergonomics of the bike has been improved thus directly effecting the manner in which the bike handles. SUSPENSION The front suspension of the 600 is composed of a set of Showa Big Piston Forks. In the rear, the 600 sits on a single Showa shock that offers external adjustable rebound and compression damping, not to mention adjustable ride height. The self adjusting, electronicallycontrolled steering damper, stiff-

ens at higher speeds and lessens at slower speeds. THE ENGINE The 2011 model has a 599cc inline four cylinder with an oversquare 67mm by 42.5mm bore to stroke ratio that results in higher engine revving performance when paired with a 12.9 to 1 compression ratio. The intake valves have a diameter of 27.2mm. The exhaust valves measure 22mm. Both sets of valves are made of titanium and complement the newly designed profile of the camshaft. The camshaft features a valve lifting curve, a first on a Suzuki production bike. This feature maximizes torque and optimizes engine output at the top end but also prevents spring surge. To minimize the length of the engine, the six-speed close ratio transmission with vertically stag-

gered shafts are tucked in the crankcase. With a taller first gear ratio followed by shorter sequential gear ratios, it gives the bike an amazing drive off of the line and out of corners and improved overall acceleration. Suzuki has relied on their racedeveloped technology for the overall design of the engine, including the forged pistons created by using the Finite Element Method in addition to fatigue analysis technology. The compact engine features shot-peened connecting rods, chrome nitride coated upper compression and oil control rings as well as pentagonal ventilation holes to aid in the circulation of air. To optimize fuel injection and create a complete combustion, the GSX-R employs the Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve (SDTV) which uses focused-fine spray 8-hole injectors for improved fuel atomization.

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has been relocated from underneath the seat to the front of the airbox to shorten and simplify the wiring harness. BRAKES The front brakes are Brembo radial mounted monobloc calipers with a pair of 310mm floating discs manipulated by an adjustable 17.46mm radial mount piston. Adjustments are made by a conveniently placed rolling wheel on the Nissin master cylinder. A single 220mm disc is paired with a Nissin single piston caliper for the rear brake. CONTROLS The 2011 GSX-R 600 features an all new dashboard. The compact cluster features an analog tachometer paired with a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for the speedometer, odometer and gear position among others. Suzuki SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 17

has added a built-in lap timer/stopwatch that is activated by a button on the right hand handle bar. Another new addition is the programmable engine RPM indicator that allows the rider to customize how he or she is alerted to shift gears. The S-DMS is the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector, a push button selector of two factory installed engine control maps, which offers choices based on rider preference and/or conditions. An adjustable shift lever and three position adjustable rearsets aid in customizing the rider’s position especially considering the shortened length of the fuel tank. EXHAUST The new and lighter exhaust system is comprised of a four-into-one set-up with a titanium muffler. The system features the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) valve that is located in the mid-pipe between the collector and the chamber underneath the engine. The SET servo controlled butterfly valve boosts torque and throttle response specifically in the low to mid range. OVERALL WEIGHT LOSS By the numbers, the 2011 GSX-R’s frame and swing arm save a total of 5 pounds. Another 4.5 pounds were shaved with the rear suspension, wheels and brake setup. The new bodywork saves a total of 7 pounds. Tack on an additional 3.7 pounds saved because of the new lighter exhaust. The bike has been on a diet and is looking damn good. The improved ergonomics, weight loss and improved engine performance makes the 2011 GSX-R a precision track weapon. Recommended immediate upgrades would include rearsets as well as brake and clutch levers. Small pet peeve but if you are going with the Brembo monoblocs and full floating rotors, go the extra step and include the Brembo master cylinders. 18 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

2011 SUZUKI GSXR 600 The Suzuki GSX-R 600 is undoubtedly among the front of the pack when considering the 600 class. Since its introduction, the GSX-R 600 has continued to excel as the bike to ride on the streets and the track. It’s certified.

I

n everyone’s life, a hand is dealt which determines the path on which you will travel. For some, that hand is laid out in perfect order; directly reflecting a dream. Living the life of a professional road racer is a dream dreamt by many, but lived by few. For this Memphis native, his dream has become his reality. From an early age, Ben Spies learned lessons that most adults must practice daily; like patience. At the age of three his parents took him to his first race. All senses were buzzing with the sights and sounds surrounding him. All was well until he decided that HE should be out racing too and

unless that was going to happen, no one would watch in peace. This raw passion and determination to ride was obvious from the start. Given the chance to brew for years, this natural hunger may be what sets him apart from the field. Ben knew from the time he was 12 that he would go on to be a professional road racer and everyone around him never doubted him once. “My mom and my sister, Lisa, were my greatest fans.” They knew that he had what it took to capture his dream. Nothing would stop him. The turning of the century meant

the turn to Pro. It was official. Spies could now take on the AMA circuit, and earn the title of a Champion, contending amongst the best of the lineup. He battled on, race after race until finally, he clinched the AMA Superbike Championship for Yoshimura Suzuki in 2006. Spies continued on to win both the 2007 and 2008 titles which highlighted the end of his AMA career. Going Pro meant being away from home. “Missing my life at home with family and friends” has been the biggest hurdle of his career. World Superbike was his next

THE GRID: BEN SPIES stop and one more thing Spies could check off “in my bucket list of great things happening in my life.” In 2009, racing for Yamaha Italia, Spies was the new kid on the grid, but he proved his skills from the gate. He clinched the pole position at his very first race. Finishing the year giving Yamaha their first World Superbike title wasn’t a bad start for Spies. He also took several records that year including most poles in a year by a rookie and he needed the least amount of starts to win a Championship. Even from his first race in AMA he wasn’t satisfied by simply winning races; he wanted to break every record set before him, and that he did. Spies ranks at the top of the charts in every category including: longest AMA Superbike winning streaks (7), all-time Superbike wins (28) and one of the youngest riders to win the AMA Superbike Championship (3rd youngest) to name a few. 2010 was yet another transition year for Ben. MotoGP welcomed him with open arms, but still showed no mercy. “MotoGP is extremely professional. I knew for me being very quiet it would be a tough challenge.” Traveling to foreign tracks in places like Qatar, Malaysia and Italy meant new layouts to learn and language barriers to break. It also meant new competition at a whole new level. When discussing strategies against the other racers, Spies adds, “I don’t think about them. I think about what I 40 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Several different elements come together to create an athlete. You must be built strong from the inside out. Spies discusses the importance of nutrition, “As with training, it’s everything. You have to eat right to take care of the stress on your body.” Another element that is pertinent is the strength of the soul. Charity work has been a part of Ben’s life since he was a young kid. Watching the selfless work of his grandparents made a permanent mark in his life. “I want to reach out to various problems and make awareness. 2011 is underway and Spies wants it all. Feeding off of knowing that the title of MotoGP Champion is dangling right in front of him, it’s so close he can taste it. With an all-star team beside him, Spies is confident that they have what it takes, “We all know each other and have worked with each other for a long time and we are dialed into each other’s ways of communication.” Ben Spies is the epitome of an athlete, constantly pushing himself to new heights. “I compete with myself,” he admits. s the new season is approaching, I am ready to spring into action in more ways than one! Racing season has just begun for most, but I have been racing year round. Whether it is physically or mentally, I have been getting myself prepared. Surviving in a male dominated sport is a huge challenge. To make the situation even more challenging, I am 18 years old and a female. I have only been racing for a total of 6 months. Most of the guys in the sport of Motorcycle Drag Racing take me as a joke, or should I say they did. I came into the sport not knowing much but thinking that I knew enough to get by. Luckily for me, I had friends that were there to guide me in the right direction. I have a passion for racing, and I had to let it be known! A lot of guys think that females show up to the track just to have fun. I don’t know about the others but I come to compete and God willing, win! A lot of males don’t like the idea of having to compete against females. And I have experienced it firsthand!

you and I know for a fact that I will win.” So me being me, I just simply smiled at him and proceeded to put my helmet on. I was thinking to myself, in the words of Kevin Hart “It’s about to go down.” So there we were at the staging line, the green light lit up and we were off! Flying down the track as if there were two raging bulls behind us. Let’s just say that after the race he came

up to me and said, “Wow. You’re really fast.” Ever since that day, we have been good friends. That goes to show you that you can’t judge a book by its cover. I may look like a small little girl that’s always smiling and happy. But when it comes time to race, my game face comes on. So ladies, just remember, at the end of the day, “Some will. Some won’t. So what? Move on.”

For example, I went to test and tune my bike at my local track and a fellow racer had a few words. He said, “I want to race

The Rev LIMITER: MR. DIXON

W

ithout Bill Dixon, professional stunt riding would be in a very different place today. Being at the center of nearly all of the industry’s milestones over the past 5 years, Bill has become a cornerstone of modern day stunt riding. Hailing from a small town in Kentucky, he has risen from a stoppie competition underdog to becoming the defending National Champion two years running. We caught up with Bill after he placed 2nd in the first round of XDL at Daytona Beach Bike Week.

60 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

SBI – When did you know stunt riding is what you wanted to do for a living? Bill - My first stoppie competition. I won against Kyle Woods and Joe Brown. I looked up to those guys and to beat them was an awesome feeling. SBI – What’s the worst crash/ injury you’ve everhad? Bill - A few years ago my fast idle stuck open and landed me between two big jeeps with a broken helmet, concussion, and a separated shoulder. I had no idea what happened for like 3

hours... Bill is recognized for converting his factory sponsored Yamaha R6 into a nearly unrecognizable stunt beast. His riding style can best be described as a “roundhouse kick to the face” and some might even call him Chuck Norris on two wheels. His sponsors at Yamaha certainly agree that Bill packs a powerful punch anytime he is on a bike. SBI - How has your life changed since you picked up the Yamaha factory sponsorship?

Bill - Not much has changed for me. I still have the same goals as before, the only difference is the goal of being a factory rider has been reached. SBI - How long does it take you to convert a stock R6 to the “Bill D machine”? Bill - That’s a trick question! I can take my bike apart, rebuild the entire thing and have it back together in one day. However, my bike has so many one-off custom parts that building it took months in the beginning. SBI - Why the thumb throttles instead of the standard twist throttle? Bill - I used to ride quads on the motocross track and found that I loved the thumb actuated throttle. So, when I first came up with the idea to change my R6 to a thumb throttle, I loved it too. Now it’s like my thing, I do it to all my toys. When it comes to Bill as an

innovator, two words come to mind: first and best. He invented half of the tricks you see him doing, and does them better than anyone else – that’s the undeniable truth. Every move the professional stunt rider makes is an attempt to become better than he was yesterday. Bill is always in competition mode, whether with fellow athletes or against his expectations for himself. Backed by an unending desire to be number one, Bill’s goals for the near future include world records and gold medals… you can’t make this stuff up. SBI - Where do you get the ideas/inspiration for your “sickest tricks”? Bill - I sleep, eat, and dream stunt riding. I am always looking for new trick ideas, and when I get them, I write them down in my phone. SBI - What are your goals for the future? Bill - I plan on doing everything SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 61

The Rev LIMITER: MR. DIXON

within my power to bring home another XDL FMF Cup Championship in 2011. I also want to be an X-Games gold medalist, and I’m trying to break some world records as well. SBI - Who/what do you attribute your continued success to? Bill - My parents are my key to my success. I think being raised a certain way will affect the way a person turns out. I was raised to never say never, under promise and over deliver, treat people honestly, and to be humble. I hope that when I have kids, I raise them as my parents raised me and my brothers.. Bill is in a great place to become a stunt riding legend. We asked him what he would change about his life, but he couldn’t think of a single thing,. Bill said, “I love my life. I feel that it’s so good it must be a dream. So don’t go pinching me because I don’t want to wake up!” That’s quite an indication that Bill loves what he does. His desire to continue competing will keep us stunt fans entertained well into the future. Thank the stunt gods for that!

T

he Daytona International Speedway parking lot buzzed with anticipation as athletes, staff, vendors, and supporters trickled into the XDL event area on Wednesday morning. Alongside XDL for the first time ever, the Stuntride.com AFS Amateur series kicked off its season simultaneously. The scorching Florida sun was there to greet everyone as the first open practice session began, and the whine of redlining four-cylinders could be heard throughout the complex. Riders from all over the country ranging from first-time competitors to seasoned veterans would slowly fill the pit area as the week continued, in hopes of becoming the next U.S. Champion. The Daytona Police Special Task Force made several appearances during the event, looking for anything from bikes to trailers that they could get their hands on. Most riders were unaffected and considered it to be more of a hassle than anything. Thomas Evans stood behind the reputation XDL has earned over the past 5 years and saw no implications from the police presence. He stated, “They do this every year at Bike Week, all over the city to anyone and everyone. We haven’t been singled out, so it’s not a big deal. It just is what it is.” His cool and collected attitude seemed to keep the riders at ease. The caliber of riding skill was on par with what has come to be known as the XDL standard. Riders showcased their athletic abilities throughout the weekend with some of the most dangerous 68 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and mind-bending tricks attempted in competition. Several participants in both XDL and AFS freestyle events kept the crowd’s appetite for crashes fulfilled by pushing themselves and their bikes over the edge of control. Nick Apex, who was featured in the February issue of SBI, came out on top after 3 rounds of insane controlled chaos and took 1st place in the FMF cup. On a custom built frame that he was still working the tweaks out of, Nick was the only rider to score over 80 points in one round, with Luke Duke Emmons (3rd) and Bill Dixon (2nd) never closer than six points behind. Rick Hart made his return to the series with impressive runs that let everyone know that he meant business. A new event that was exceptionally popular was the WheelieTeach. com Wheelie Race. 2008 XDL Champion and AMA racer Aaron Colton pulled out ahead while the crowd cheered for the RedBull sponsored rider. Earlier in the week, Aaron had some major issues with his Ducati, so being able to participate and successfully win an event, “made it all worth it,” as Aaron addressed and thanked the crowd over the microphone. The Sartso Killer Jeans Women’s Cup brought out two first-time XDL competitors; Brytni Noell and Crystal Hooks. Brytni took second place on her fiancé’s bike with only a day of practice on the borrowed Kawasaki 636. Crystal made up for her inexperience in competition with style and SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 69

came from “Savage” Lin Eshalom who placed first in the K&N Circle Challenge, Bill Dixon who won the Stuntride.com Sickest Trick award, and Eric “E-Brake” Pettit who took home the first ever top spot in the Racing 905 Speed and Style Showdown. Chris Lints outperformed his fellow AFS competitors to place

1st in the freestyle event during a ground-breaking new final format that was a hit with all the riders. “Dirty” George Polimenakos took both the AFS Circle Challenge and Sickest Trick titles. MOTO TECH: BLEEDING YOUR BRAKES

Words and Photos: Mark Rozema

W

hy is it important to flush and bleed your brakes and clutch? Conventional glycol-based brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means that it absorbs water. This is important in order to keep condensation in the brake system from causing corrosion. Over time the fluid will absorb all the moisture it can hold, reaching its point of saturation. Several things can happen at this point. Unabsorbed moisture can begin to collect in the system, causing corrosion in critical areas; the water can cause seals to swell and deteriorate, further contaminating the fluid; and the boiling point of the fluid drops substantially. This means that under high-heat braking conditions, such as during hard braking or repeated brake application,

the fluid will start boiling sooner, which will reduce braking performance. The lever can begin to feel spongy, and as braking efficiency drops, it takes longer to stop. When adding new brake fluid, be sure it’s the appropriate type for your motorcycle; it will be listed in the owner’s manual or marked on the reservoir cover. Conventional glycol-based formulas are designated as DOT 3 and DOT 4, which differ mainly by their boiling points. While the two are compatible, DOT 4 has a higher boiling point, so if your motorcycle is designed for DOT 4, don’t substitute DOT 3. If DOT 3 is recommended, you can use either type.

Brake and clutch bleeding kits make the task much easier. However, they are not mandatory. You may already have the necessary tools to complete the job in your toolbox. Check your bike’s manual for details.

MOTO TECH: BLEEDING YOUR BRAKES

It’s important to note that DOT 5 brake fluid, which is siliconbased, is NOT compatible with conventional fluid and should NEVER be added to a system using DOT 3 or 4. DOT 5, which has a purple color, doesn’t absorb moisture, and has a higher boiling point. DOT 5 is NOT recommended very often for motorcycles because its lack of moisture absorption increases the chance of corrosion, it can cause the brake lever to have a spongy feel. In addition, if using DOT 3 or 4, be careful not to spill brake fluid on painted surfaces, as it can eat away the paint. If this happens, clean up the spill immediately and wash the area with plenty of water. It is important to flush and bleed your system at least once a season. For racing and track day use, I recommend after each event for maximum braking performance, especially after riding in the rain.

Whenever you add brake fluid, it should come from a fresh, sealed container. This is, again, due to its hygroscopic characteristics. Fluid that has been exposed to air for any length of time can absorb water vapor, reducing its capacity to absorb moisture in the brake system. When buying brake fluid, always get the smallest container that will do the job. Any leftover fluid should be stored in a tightly sealed bottle and used within a few weeks. Take care when bleeding the system to make sure there are no remaining air bubbles. It’s a good idea to re-bleed the brakes and clutch the next day after a fluid flush. This will ensure you get any remaining micro-bubbles out, and give you a firm brake lever feel. The use of a speed bleeder or a vacuum bleeder makes the job cleaner and easier. If you are unsure of the proper procedures, seek the help of a qualified mechanic. Your brake system is the last place you want to take chances!

T H E I M P O R TA N C E O F S TA B I L I T Y When teaching concepts at the Penguin School, we always make a point to help students understand the “why” when it comes to teaching lines, techniques and strategies.. I was reading a good book recently and there was a quote that read “successful people will always know what to do in order to solve a problem. Their bosses will always know why.” Explaining the “why” in situations on the track allows riders to become their own boss and help them ride proactively instead of reactively. Keen anticipation beats out great reaction every time.

Perhaps the most important seg-

ments of a track to understand clearly are the entrances of the corners. In order to determine what the proper actions should be, riders need to first determine what they are looking for as the desired result.. While all corners have their own unique character, one universally desirable goal is the ability to turn the bike quickly. When observing track day riders and club racers, one of the biggest things that separates good riders from mediocre ones is the rate of lean. An important advantage of a rapid rate of lean is that the less time a rider spends getting to full lean, the more time

that the rider can spend on the brakes. If a particular corner requires a 90 degree change in trajectory, by the time the bike reaches the apex, a rider who leans the bike slowly will have to start turning earlier in order to accomplish this change. Since leaning the bike reduces front grip for braking, the earlier a rider starts to lean the bike over, the sooner that rider will have to release the brakes. This early release of the brakes will then require an earlier brake point, slowing the entire entrance of the corner. It quickly becomes obvious that leaning the motorcycle rapidly is critical to maintaining good entrance speed. From a theoretical standpoint, the faster the motorcycle gets to full lean the faster a rider can go. Turning the bike faster requires more force on the bars, but how much force is too much? There is a very simple rule of thumb that we have used at the school for a long time. Our students are instructed to turn the bike incrementally quicker and quicker until they have to wait for the bike to settle before getting back on the gas. The need to wait signifies that the rider has used too much force and needs to be a little smoother at the

controls. As riders gain speed around the track, the location and intensity of the initiation of the turn is constantly being adjusted. The amount of force that it takes to turn your motorcycle at any given speed is one of the first things that a rider feels for when riding a new bike or testing a new setup. It is this feedback that is one of the most important defining attributes of any motorcycle. The following section will begin to look at a few factors that can affect this feel and will discuss some things that riders can do to help gain the confidence to turn quickly. One of the most important things that a motorcycle needs to be turned quickly is stable chassis geometry. Small changes can make a big difference in feel. For example,

if a rogue mechanic were to drop your front ride height as little as 5-10mm (sliding your forks through the triple clamps) without your knowledge, your motorcycle would feel very different to you when you rode it the next day. Turning with your customary amount of bar input would result in the bike carving faster than expected to the apex and you may find yourself picking the bike up to avoid clipping the inside of a corner. You would also notice a decrease in the amount of midcorner feedback. All this can result from only a small change in front ride height. Most modern motorcycles have about 120mm of travel in the front forks. If a rider hits some unexpected bumps, applies the front brakes too quickly or unsettles the suspension with a significant weight transfer, it’s not hard to imagine a bike

moving up and down through 10mm of travel (or more). Considering the degree to which a small change in ride height can change a motorcycle, it stands to reason that riders should do all that they can to maintain front end stability on the entrance to a corner. How can a rider be expected to turn the bike quickly when the amount of force needed to make that turn is constantly changing? Here are a few basic things to consider... First, the application of the brakes needs to be smooth. When wide open down a straight, a motorcycle is still trying to wheelie (even though it doesn’t have enough power). The forks are usually extended to near the top of their travel. Just for discussion sake, we’ll say that on a 600 lb total package (rider and motorcycle) that 100lbs is on the front and SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 89

90 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

improve your skills 500 lbs is on the rear while at wide open throttle. Under full braking, nearly all the weight of the bike shifts forward and the forks are nearly fully compressed – we’ll say that the numbers reverse to 500 lbs on the front and 100 lbs on the rear. Braking needs to be smooth enough so that the forks do not overshoot that 500 lb level and compress too much. If given too much brake too quickly, the forks will compress past the 500 lb mark and then rebound back, oscillating up and down until they settle back to an equilibrium point. This undesired instability will dramatically slow the rate of lean of the motorcycle. Second, the throttle needs to be rolled off smoothly. Snapping the throttle closed can have the effect of applying the

brake lever too quickly. The larger the motorcycle (more compression) the more this principle tends to come into play. Imagine what happens to a motorcycle when the throttle is rolled off suddenly...the front end quickly dives. When we consider that the average braking zone is only 2-3 seconds, that’s not a lot of time to settle things down once they have started moving too much. Riders are often amazed when they discover that they can pull the brakes 10-20% harder as a result of the extra stability gained by rolling off the gas smoothly. Finally, riders need to avoid weight shifts during the entrance of a corner. The most common problem occurs when riders get off the inside of the motorcycle during the entrance

to the corner. I have followed many riders over the years who were set up perfectly on the way into a corner, only to upset the bike as they get off the seat right before tip-in. The simple solution for this is to have your initial weight shift done before you start your braking. This does not mean that riders should hang off all the way down the straight, but most top riders have their inside butt cheek just off the inside of the seat well before the entrance of the corner. This preparatory step avoids the need to unweight the seat to lean off the inside of the bike and instead allows them to simply point their knee to the inside and slide over smoothly as they lean into the corner. Simple anticipation beats great reaction every time…

arley-Davidson (H-D) and RIDES magazine recently celebrated Black History month in a very unique fashion by hosting “Brothers of The Bike”, a one-time exhibit at Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in the Big Apple, which highlighted the many contributions AfricanAmericans have made within the motorcycling community. On display were vintage photos of Bessie Stringfield, the first African American female to ride solo cross-country on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle; William B. Johnson,

the first African American Harley-Davidson dealer; Rickey Gadson World Champion professional drag racer and James “Bubba” Stewart, Supercross and Motocross champion as well as more vintage images that provide a glimpse into the rich colorful history of the African-American community. So what is a party celebrating bikers in the African-American community without the bikes? They had that covered with a 2010 H-D Softail Deluxe along with three of NY’s own hardcore customs.

EDIA RECEPTION

H-D and RIDES took this opportunity to show their “Brothers of the Bike: The African-American Motorcycle Experience” video. This video speaks to the essence of what the African-American bike community is and represents with true testimony from notables such as Rare Breed, L.A. Defiant Ones, East Bay Dragons, and Dan Tibbs, owner of NEXX Unlimited clothing and Transit Wheelers. “We want to capture the spirit of the African-American rider by telling their stories,” says John Comissiong, head of H-D’s AfricanAmerican Market Outreach. With a strong representation from numerous clubs including Brooklyn’s Buffalo Troopers, the Harlem Big Shots, and Queen’s XR8ED, this one-time exhibit may just be the catalyst of more to come. 96 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

More and more guys and gals are turning to naked SF bikes because of the comfort, the superior wheelie distance, and ease of a sit-up bike that is almost as fast as a race bike but more laid back. Let’s take it back… As a kid, my mom and dad had a friend that rode a Honda CB 750 and he would come by the house. I would beg him for a ride and my mom would say, “Before he goes, he can give you a ride up and

down the block.” A CB 750 in Kingston, Jamaica was a big deal in the 70’s so I waited all night for my ride. I stood next to that bike until it cooled down, to the point that the chrome pipes weren’t even hot any more. So when it came time for our family friend to leave, he took me for a ride that turned me into the enthusiast that I am today. There is more of a freeness to these bikes and when Ducati made the Street Fighter, I was super hyped at its release and 155hp! It was the sportbiker’s answer to the Ducati Monster. I could imagine my 3rd gear wheelies! How sweet they would be! All the major brands have

a version of a “naked bike” so you have several choices. Take a look at one and I bet your back will be thanking you after that first hundred miles! The other beauty of these bikes is that the cops don’t really harass the riders because they have no clue that these bikes

can dip in and out like a sport bike. What they really don’t know is that they are also a part of the Hooligan street bike world and we are the worst of the import bike riders. I’ll have to write a whole other article about the urban Hooligan life! Hopefully, I can also talk my

editor into bringing on more bikes of different styles and different backgrounds, but don’t expect any choppers! The magazine is called Sportbikes Inc after all! But remember, the Original Ghost Rider of Europe rode a naked bike when he was setting all those records!

staff stuff DUNLOP • SPORTMAX Q2 TIRES Leon Brittain Just as the sportbike industry continues to grow, tire manufacturing continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Our liter bikes demand more out of our tires than ever before and deserve our utmost, complete attention, whether you’re a casual rider or weekend track warrior. For my riding preferences (street and track), I found the Dunlop Sportmax Q2 to be exactly what I need, if not more. The Q2’s have a relatively low running temperature and thanks to Dunlop’s proprietary components and their MT (Multi-Tread) technology, these babies warm up fast and offer resounding grip and performance. All of which provide a sense of confidence when pushing hard during my track days – although I still recommend a warm-up lap or two for safety sake - always. When not on the track and dipping through the back roads or on a daily commute, the Q2’s provide a smooth and responsive ride. I can confidently say, I’m running and sticking with my all-in-one rubbers – at least until I’m convinced otherwise. www.dunloptires.com Rating: 5 (out of 6)

WOOFDCRAFT CFM • REARSETS Allan Lane I’ve never been a fan of stock rearsets. I don’t understand why the manufacturers don’t equip their machines with sturdy fixed pegs. They add stability and strength as well as aid in proper foot placement. Instead, the bikes roll out of the factory with flimsy rearsets that are swapped out as soon as possible. I have fitted both my street and track bikes with Woodcraft CFM rearsets and I love them. They are adjustable and easy to customize for your riding position preferences. One of the first things I noticed was that my body position immediately improved. I was more confident when cornering... overall, I just felt better on the bike. Only complaint: lack of heel guards on the 748 track bike set up. Pipe melted the heel of my boots...twice. www.capcom.com Rating: 5 (out of 6) 104 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
