In 2013 after a GP race, I sent Nicky a text to see if he was coming out to the Red Bull after party. Earlier in the weekend, we were talking about it, and he had an interest in going. That race wasn't Nicky's best results, but it was far from his worst. When I reached out to him to see what time we were linking up to head over to the party, he told me that he didn't deserve to celebrate. I asked, "Why not?" He expressed that he was better than his results (I believe he came in ninth). He decided that he was staying in for the night. No party.

This one, of many moments shared with my dear friend Nicky stands out in my mind as a testament to his work ethic. Nicky wasn't happy with his performance at the office that Sunday afternoon. He believed he was better than his placement, and because of that, there was no need to

Work. Work hard. Work harder. Not for the party. But because it's what you are supposed to do.

I went on to the party and celebrated enough for myself, Nicky and a few others. I had a great night! But the next day, I processed the message that Nicky was conveying from his point of view. Working hard doesn't always equate to playing hard. The party is not the reward. The reward is asking yourself to show up and do the best damn job possible and then actually showing up, doing your best and forgetting the rest. The reward is knowing that you left it all out there on the asphalt.

Another notable guest, was the motorcycle columnist and journalist and internationally published writer Cristine Sommer-Simmons, the co-founder of Harley Women magazine. She is a three-time Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee who not only competed in four Motorcycle Cannonball cross country races but also wrote "The American Motorcycle Girls 1900-1950" publication. GRID NEWS NICKY HAYDEN’S #69 RETIRED

In a touching ceremony on a Friday afternoon, in the media center at the Circuit of the Americas, the late Kentucky Legend Nicky Hayden’s racing number was officially retired. In a room filled with family, friends and colleagues, FIM President Jorge Viegas and Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta conducted the proceedings with kind words and a video highlight reel that celebrated the spirit of Nicky Hayden. The MotoGP legend’s brother Tommy Hayden and father, Earl Hayden joined Viegas and Ezpeleta on stage with Tommy speaking on behalf of the Hayden family. After the retirement ceremony, following the day’s practices, family and friends joined the Haydens at COTA’s turn 18, aptly named Hayden Hill for a stunning homage to the late Champion. The photo opportunity that included fans, friends, family and what seemed to be the entire race paddock proved what a positive, powerful and everlasting affect that Nicky Hayden possessed on the sport of motorcycle racing. Before the start of the grand prix on Sunday afternoon, Nicky Hayden’s Repsol Honda GP machine was presented before all of the grid in an emotional tribute to the late, great and grand MotoGP legend.

THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS PHILLIP ISLAND ROUND OF MOTOGP HAS TWO TITLE SPONSORS Dorna announced that they have come to an agreement with Pramac and Generac to co-title sponsor the Australian round of the 2019 MotoGP season. The Pramac Ducati team and their pilot, Australian Jack Miller will share title sponsorship with Generac. The Pramac General Australian Motorcycle Grand Prize is scheduled for October 25 through 27 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

anna know how yours truly and the slew of MotoGP Freaks conquer a MotoGP race weekend? Follow this detailed diary of my race weekend and see how I do it! Of course, some details will be left out to protect the guilty. You know who you are!

Bradley Smith is what I like to call a true friend. I've picked him up from the airport for the IndyGP, THURSDAY, APRIL 11TH and he's come to one of my shows in Texas. Racers and GP Freaks like me who are just hanging around trying to get a picture with a rider or talking with people who you know strictly from social media. It's the calm before the storm. Everybody's loose, scooters are zooming everywhere, everybody's smiling, and the sun is out? Yeah, this weekend is going to be lit!

FRIDAY, APRIL 12TH Believe it or not, the girls are on time, and I make it to the track with enough time to get some coffee and set up at a spot to watch Moto3. The "Bumble Bees" is what I call them. I'm in heaven, my element. A race track, the smells of racing, particular motorcycle racing is what lights my fire. I've seriously thought about being cremated and having my ashes strewn across a race circuit. Strange thing? I feel a funny feeling that although Which circuit is the question. Everything means a little something right? Wh en yo u r wo ma n says, "Nothing" after being asked, "What's wrong?" When your car or bike makes a sound, you've never heard before. A little bit of something means something and something is a tad bit off. I leave the track and find out Hot Girl #1, and Hot Girl #2 are staying with me in addition to another Hot Girl who I had to drive to San Antonio to pick up, so yeah, I had three muy caliente ladies staying with me for the weekend, which meant only one thing... I was left with no counter space! Women! Oh well, it's Friday night, which means the SportBikes Inc Magazine MotoGP party! To say it was lit is an understatement! THE STRAIGHT LINE: ASPHALT & OPPORTUNITY When you start talking about motorcycle GRUDGE racing and the legends from within the sport… one of the top riders and grudge bike combinations will always have Ray Lee and Eddie Cane attached to the conversation. I’ve watched this rider and bike combination win a lot of races and they were at the top of the food tree during their era of racing. This combination of rider and machine was the show and at the end of almost every event… They were the main attraction. RAY LEE: As a kid, my cousins raced motorcycles. I would run around the house and make motorcycle noises. So at around 17 to18 years of age, I got a job, and with the help of my cousin, I bought my own motorcycle. I kept the bike at my father's house just so that my mother wouldn't know. I got addicted to the speed. Speed was the essence of it all for me. SBI: What is your most memorable moment? RAY LEE: The most memorable Ray Lee moment for me personally was at Dano's Grudgefest in 2014 at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The Big Boys were locked in for some late night action and the most hyped race of the night was Eddie Cane (GSX-R 1000) versus Black Caesar (Hayabusa) in some quarter mile action. Every GSX-R 1000 out of the East Side Performance shop was on kill mode that night, and Ray Lee was in rare form. The most exciting part about the grudge race is normally all of the trash talk that leads up to it, which normally begins about two months prior. And this one started when Jarret Jones (Black Caesar) got on Facebook. When a man calls you out for a race, it's normally when he believes that your bike isn't running at 100 percent, which means that you're easy 54 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2019

prey on that particular day. On this particular night, Ray Lee was focused, and Eddie Cane was running consistent numbers on the shakedown. When it came down to the race, Ray told Jarrett Jones that he would beat him in the entire ticket which is disrespectful in grudge racing and he was willing to put money on it. Everyone expected The Black Caesar camp to just pay the punk out and live to fight another day, but that old thing called pride got in the way. Everyone knew that Black Caesar was fresh out of the shop and that the bike wasn't ready on that particular night. Needless to say, the race went down, and Eddie Cane put a tractor-trailer length distance on him before the finish line. SBI: Now it's one thing to lose to a man, but the post-race interview was the killer because the man that wins also gets the last laugh and this one was historic. RAY LEE: Look, man. It's like this‌ The man has been talking since we locked the race in and you really haven't heard me say nothing. The only time that I talked, I talked to Jarrett Jones, who was on Facebook when he disrespected a female racer, CC. Anyone who's racing in this Grudge Game battling against men, I take my hat off to them. CC you're a straight-up female. I told you at the end of the track when your head was down, "I own you!" I told Jarrett last year when I get you at the track that I'm gonna teach you a lesson. I beat him off the tree, the 60 foot, the 330, the 1/8 mile, and the 1,000-foot mark! What don't you get? I

t was about that time of the year again. Every American gear head's favorite: America's GP! Everyone from not just the states, but overseas comes to Austin, TX to see the one and only MotoGP race that is held in America. Not only is there MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 races, but MotoAmerica races, as well. I get there every year on a Wednesday, so I have time to explore the city and get to the track early. It's nice to get a little relaxation before the weekend madness, which never stops. On Thursday, Ducati Austin holds an event with drinks, food trucks, motorcycles, and what every woman and man is there for, Ducati Factory and Satellite riders. Vito, the owner of Ducati Austin, is so kind as to organize the riders coming to sign autographs and pose for photos. It's a great way

to kick off the weekend. On Friday is when the real madness starts. Everyone is racing to get to the tracks bright and early to get every minute worth of the weekend. The lines keep getting bigger and bigger every year. There's so much to see and time flies at the track. There are vendors, demo rides, go-karting, ziplines, and so much more. Ducati even has it's own "island" where it's just a sea of red. The zip line, along with the go-kart track is right at Ducati Island. They have quite a setup. If you get the Ducati Island ticket package, you get to check in your gear, where it's safe and sound with Vicki Smith and her amazing staff. You also get an armband where you can get complimentary espresso, biscottis, water, shade, and a two-story view. There is also a Desmo Owners Club area

where you can charge your phone and get what is most important nowadays‌ WIFI. There is also a stage where many things go on during the weekend and where the DJ is. There are also many areas to look at bikes brought by Ducati North America, and of course, the customer's motorcycles that are parked on the premises, which honestly, you can spend hours looking at everyone's unique style and way to make their bike, well theirs. Friday, I took a quick ride on the zip line. I didn't expect it to be as great as it was. The people running it were the most helpful people, and the views going to the top and back were amazing. The zip line is something you should take advantage of next year if you didn't get to do it this year. It's always nice to get the bird's eye view! Ducati had something extraordinary going on that day on stage, which I wouldn't have missed for the world. The Hayden Family was up there with Nicky Hayden's bikes. One, which was up for auction or could be purchased for $69,000. Seeing everyone in the crowd, along with the Hayden family and friends up on stage puts in perspective how they will forever be hurting, yet smiling because of all of Nicky's fans keeping his spirit alive. I was lucky enough to have a conversation once with Earl and his wife, who are two of the sweetest people I've ever met. Seeing Earl smile, signing autographs warmed my heart. In the evening, our beloved, Allan Lane holds his annual MotoGP kick off party downtown. Everyone knows a party Allan Lane is hosting, is the place to be. As usual, it was a full house, and it was quite a party! I ended up being the last one there, continuing to party with the staff. That's a sign of a good night. Saturday is when it starts to get busy! Everyone is off, and the track is even more full than it was Friday. I spend most of my time in the paddock

or on Ducati Island. There is so much more to see, but as I said, you lose track of time. The paddock, to me, is the best spot. Alpinestars has a hospitality tent, where you're treated like royalty. There's a bar, ping pong and so much more to do while you're in the paddock. You're of course more up close and personal with the teams and riders, which is where you can see tons of grown men waiting for autographs and photos, shouting their names as if they're 14-year-old girls at a Backstreet Boys concert. It's quite funny and entertaining. What is cool is that you get to see how precise they are with cleaning parts from the bike or if riders crash, seeing the bikes come back in just a few feet away from you. The best part of the paddock to me is the people. Getting to see everyone's beautiful smile, well, makes me smile! It's always lovely to see everyone in one area. Sunday is... Well... Chaotic. While heading to the track, you're realizing it's the last day, which honestly puts me into a mild depression knowing it's back to reality. The stands are full at every turn as the boys come out to play. Moto3 is first, where Aron Canet took the checkered flag, followed by Masia and Migno. Moto2 was quite a race! The Dynavolt Intact GP team killed it! Both teammates finished first and second. Thomas Luthi was first, followed by Marcel SchrĂśtter and Jorge Navarro. Once MotoGP is on the grid, Marc Marquez and his team are feeling the pressure and hoping to get the same results as all the years past, but for some fans, they wanted a change, and well, they got what they wished for. With 12 laps to go, Marc goes down at the end of the back straight at turn 12 with 3.6 seconds clear of Valentino Rossi, just shortly after the commentator mentions that Marc has not had so many moments this year. He gets up, drops the bike as the corner workers run over to help, hops on as he's trying to get it to start again and then has a very dramatic fall, which is the universe clearly telling him he was done. It was such a heartbreak for the MM93 fans, but for the VR46, it was a miracle. MAY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 75


THE LIFE: THE INSIDE LINE As the race continues, Rossi is hoping that Rins will make a mistake, but it that didn't happen as Rins won his first MotoGP race! Rossi followed by placing second, and Miller third. It was quite a race, and everyone at the podium was ready to celebrate! There was the obligatory champagne shower, which I was a victim. I can't complain. Who doesn't like champagne?

THE LIFE: THE LION'S DEN motorcyclist types, if you will, are as varied as the different types of clubs there are. There are of course club riders, there are track riders, stunt riders, commuters, canyon carvers, custom bike builders or show bike contestants, trailer kings & queens, drag racers, weekend warriors, adventurers, tourers, dirt & MotoX riders, Mini GP racers, CCS circuit motorcyclists, street racers, fair weather riders and probably a few I have not yet encountered in my two-wheeled travels. For a long time, more than half of those among the previously mentioned groups of motorcycle enthusiasts other than club riders have referred to themselves and have been respectfully referred to as “independent riders.” Independent riders? That name always struck me odd, even when I too was “independent.”

Quite the contrary, I believe the club cut obligates you to offer help when and where it is needed. Not only are you representing the motorcycle club community but the greater motorcycling community to both those in and outside the club community. We, club riders and non-club riders alike, share a common interest in motorcycles, a common passion for riding and a common desire to make it to our destination or back home in the same condition as when we left from where we started. Under that leather or from in front of that patch we are the same, and even membership in a club cannot change that.

Independent refers to not being a member of a motorcycle club, so technically all motorcyclists who fly no colors are independent. Aside from not being permitted to MC only events and meetings, there aren’t any places independent riders are restricted from being. Independent riders may own and ride any motorcycle that a patched club member can. Last I checked there were no public roads closed to motorcyclists who were not vested and fully patched. Motorcycles’ appeal is universal and in most instances, arguably, completely “independent” of the motorcyclist atop that machine. Perhaps most important of all is the similar respect and response from one another we motorcyclists receive from others with this shared interest regardless of membership in a club or not. When out on two wheels and another biker passes you on the road, we wave to one another with no regard for how the biker is dressed. If at a motorcycle event it matters little if the person with whom you are having a conversation is wearing a back patch or not; good conversation, better atmosphere, and great company comes with or without motorcycle club monthly dues. And when you are broken down, injured, lost or out of gas on the side of the road and a motorcyclist approaches, you don’t care if the rider is rocking generic flash patches they purchased on Amazon or a club officer title and name tape they earned if they have arrived to assist you.

It is because of these commonalities I prefer to think of non-club motorcyclists as unaffiliated as opposed to independent because of no matter where on the planet we ride, we have the support of those like us behind us. We have the courtesy of those unlike us to rely on in times of need and in times of plenty. We have the company of other motorcyclists regardless of affiliation or lack thereof on which we can depend when alone on two wheels. You see, we are not independent without a back patch though we may be unaffiliated with any particular motorcycle organization, social group, gang, club or team. We are not alone where we may go because there are too many of you and too many of us with the same mindset for any one of us to be independent of the rest.

The success of our sport/hobby/lifestyle and the growth of our community depends too much on our coming together and not dividing ourselves based on the name we wear on our clothing or the fact that some of us gather around a table and hold meetings while others do not. So to all my unaffiliated fellow motorcyclists out there, do not accept or embrace the title of “independent” placed upon you by others who may be affiliated with clubs or gangs or organizations or social groups. And to my fellow motorcycle club members who ride, do not alienate others or otherwise draw lines in the sand across which those who choose not to ride with a club must stand. It's a reality, and it needs to be discussed. Preparing yourself for that moment, if it ever arrives could mean the difference between... Well, you know. Staying ready so that you do not have to get ready transcends so many facts of life. When it comes to riding while strapped, staying ready is paramount.

THE LIFE: RIDING WHILE STRAPPED is that it operates and functions. What's even more important than that? Being able to operate your firearm with confidence. In a future installment, we will discuss a few drills to practice that are specific to those that ride. An element of that discussion is the ability to operate your firearm in the moment of engagement, properly. Think about it. Timing is massively important and if you think the threat is going to be mesmerized by your bedazzled 9mm, then most likely you'll also believe that the threat will give you the appropriate amount of time to turn off your bike, put the kickstand down, dismount, remove your gloves and draw your firearm‌ That's never going to happen. If you are committed to riding while strapped, then you must be committed to be strapped while riding. You've selected your gun, your holster, and even where and how you carry while riding. What is often overlooked is one of the most fundamental matters of accessibility — your riding gloves. The gloves you wear while riding serve the purpose of protecting in the event of an off while also allowing you to maintain your grip on your bike's controls. There are several styles of gloves to select from that include wrist length, gauntlet style, mesh, leather, hybrid, race level, etc. If you are riding while strapped, your selection of riding gloves must take into consideration that reality that you may need to operate your weapon in a moment of engagement and if you cannot fit your finger between the trigger and the trigger guard, what is the point? If you cannot tactically and confidently operate and control your firemen in a moment of engagement, what is the point? You must give yourself the best chance of survival. In some cases, the gloves you are wearing could mean the difference between‌ Well, you know. Remember, the threat is not going to give you time to mount a proper defense. You must be ready at any moment. I've tried several gloves before 84 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2019

deciding on what style suited my riding style the best. It was a matter of what gloves were going to offer me the most protection while still allowing me to maintain the dexterity and functionality of both my bike and my firearm. If you look at the photos, you will notice that only one pair of gloves allows my finger to rest easy upon the trigger, (FIG. 1) noted by the space between my finger and the trigger guard. The other gloves pictured represent a lack of space between my finger and the trigger guard. This matter because, in the moment of engagement when I need to draw my firearm, being able to control and operate my weapon with confidence makes the difference between me connecting with my target and not connecting with my target. If the finger of a glove is too bulky and prevents you from resting your finger upon the trigger at the moment, you could accidentally discharge your weapon and potentially create a more significant issue for yourself and perhaps others. If you are riding while strapped, please take into consideration your choice of riding gloves. Practice holding your firearm with your gloves to make sure that you can operate it with confidence. Practice your draw, practice dry firing, all while wearing your riding gloves. If you go to the range, and you should be going to the range, add some drills to your range time. Practice drawing your weapon and firing live rounds while wearing your gloves so that you have the experience and understanding if you ever need to do so in a real-life situation. Take your time and find the right pair of gloves that offer you the comfort, protection, and dexterity that is right for you. RF: I love motorcycles and find it fun to create

RF: I started Roaring Toyz in late 1999 as things. We think up a new part, prototype a motorcycle repair shop. I was road racing it, test it, market it, and hope others will and did some race prep, service, crash, and appreciate what we have come up with. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES T H AT I S H O U L D CONSIDER WHEN BUYING REARSETS? F

or many of us, riding the racetrack is a passion that’s difficult to describe to those who are uninitiated. The drive to improve both our machines and our individual skill sets is a common thread that ties together riders of all ages, experience, and backgrounds. Track day riders and racers devote considerable time, energy, and resources to our sport. Many of the ideas for these articles come from people who ask questions that boil down to “what’s next” with respect to either solving a problem on the track or when considering their next purchase. We’ve all got finite resources (both in terms of time and money) and want to spend what we’ve got wisely. This month we are going to answer questions that several students have asked recently – when do I need rearsets and what should I look for when I buy them? A good set of rearsets will often cost anywhere from $400-$600, so this is MAY 2019 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 101


IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: REARSETS certainly a question worth considering. I’d like to answer this question in three parts. First, there are certain features common to most every OEM rearset that should be considered. We’ll talk about the universal pros and cons of OEM versus aftermarket rearsets. Second, there are several key traits that are unique to each motorcycle, and these should be addressed on a bike by bike basis. Third, we’ll cover the basic questions that you want to ask in order to select the best rearset kit for you. If we disregard actual footpeg position as a factor on stock rearsets for the moment, there are two major functional differences that I feel are very important between OEM and aftermarket units. These factors apply to nearly every OEM rearset I have ever ridden on.

asphalt (or a curb, etc.) then the folding peg will reduce the effect of the hit on the chassis and reduce the likelihood of a crash. Fair enough. What disadvantages are there for a folding peg? First, once a rider gains track experience, the advantage of primarily using your feet, ankles, and legs to move on the bike becomes quickly apparent. As riders begin to turn with greater precision (and speed) the force required on the pegs becomes many times greater than what is used on the street. Fast riders will often inadvertently cause the pegs to fold up unintentionally, which is a major distraction.

The other factor with pegs that fold comes with respect to the protection of the motorcycle. Rearsets are an important part of the protection package when used in conjunction with other parts. There is a debate among riders these days whether frame sliders are a good idea or not. I’m personally a fan of them, but only if they do UNIVERSAL CONSIDERATIONS First and foremost, the stock footpegs fold. point sliding system does a great job to protect important parts like frames, exhaust and especially engine covers. A well-made rearset will make it much more likely that your bike survives a fall. You are far more likely to be able to ride home in a street incident (or finish your track day) when combining rearsets with other protection. Note on the photo at the right how exposed the engine case is when the stock footpegs fold up.

A major concern for many riders is that 99% of the stock pegs out there do not have very good grip. Some motorcycles (which shall remain nameless) come with pegs that are downright slippery. Having a set of rearsets with a grippy surface will allow riders to use their legs as they should and keep solid footing on the bike.

Next, the ideal position for a rider who wants to be able to move side to side quickly is an athletic position - similar to playing shor tstop. The balls of your feet should be directly underneath you w h e n yo u a re midway down the seat. Many bikes have the footpegs fur ther for ward t h a n id e a l fo r “spirited” riding. For this reason, many rearset manufacturers will move the pegs b a ck i n o rd e r to facilitate rider movement. Finally, the most important connection for riders as they learn proper body position is the outside knee firmly planted against the tank. Since the knee area of the tank is typically 8-12” tall, this leaves room for a pretty wide range of riders to anchor in. However, if your pegs are low or your legs are short, you may find making

Today, manufacturers are doing much better on some models but there are frequently still some improvements that are needed. and other electric hub motored bikes the team at Roland Sands Design couldn’t help but imagine the possibilities a platform like this could offer. Racetracks in indoor facilities where racing makes its way in front of the public with little sound and no emissions, or rentable rider friendly machines that take up little space and require essentially no maintenance. It’s a low risk, high fun concept. In the case of local transport, we’ve seen the introduction of the electric scooter displacing the bicycle in some places. In any case, people are getting their first shot at a two-wheeled powered machine, even if they are standing on it. It opens up the case for low dollar, low power bicycle class electric bikes and pedal assist platforms without the need for ownership. Of course, we can’t go too far down any road until we start thinking about racing and what that looks like with a low powered electric platform. into a slim road racer that performs well and looks the part. The bike roll’s on slicks giving it tacky grip and plenty of traction when leaning the bike over at extreme angles. The fork was a prototype unit from Super73 and added adjustability into the frontal dampening. The back of the bike was removed, and a slim custom fabricated subframe and the aggressive tapered rear tube was put in place to give the machine some race flavor and also help simplify the lines of the bike. The stock battery/gas tank was covered with a one-piece gas tank and tail section fashioned from our Pikes Peak Project 156 tank mold. In theme with the racer mentality, the brank mount was removed going full electric with no pedal assist. We added a plexiglass panel to reside in the empty void at the center of the bike. The paint was applied by Jay LaRossa at matching number panels, and fork graphics by ZLT were fashioned completing the racers transformation. Electric motorcycles are the future. Not only the future, but it’s undeniable that the electric revolution is upon us and it will touch everyone and everything.
