As our moto-world attempts to return to what we once considered normal, you'll note that while the sentiment of urgency exists for us to get back to the get back, there is also a proper sense of caution and concern. There are new rules, regulations, and protocols. MotoAmerica just held its first race of the 2020 season at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, sans any fans. Only essential team members and staff were in attendance. WordSBK is still on hold, as well as MotoGP, and it seems that every week, both racing bodies send word of a new cancellation or 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020

postponement. Tracks in the US are slowly reopening with new guidelines to enforce social distancing. Bike manufacturers and the moto-aftermarket section are starting to turn wheels again as many return to work. It is promising. As these things that we love and need, as motorcyclists, continue to open up and become available, let us not only trust the process but also let us embrace it. The "get back" is closer than ever. Let's not ruin it by jumping the gun, doing too much... too soon. #lessbitchingmoreriding Best, Allan @mrblackmoses

2020 AMA VINTAGE MOTORCYCLES DAYS... POSTPONED Ohio is currently under project "Responsible Restart Ohio" which is how the state is handling its reopening of businesses and events in a post "shelter in place" world. To be in accordance with these guidelines, the AMA and the MidOhio Sports Car Course have decided to postpone the annual AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days that were scheduled for July 10 through 12, in Lexington, Ohio. “Unfortunately, event restrictions in place under order of the Ohio Department of Health prohibit many traditional elements of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days that our competitors and fans have come to enjoy. The social interaction and camaraderie are an integral component that we love about this event. The multi-day swap meet, the camping, in-field activities, the crowds, not to mention the organic fun of the event, are impossible in light of the current situation.” AMA Chief Operating Officer James Holter. No new dates have been announced but tickets that have been purchased will be honored. 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020
PUIG R-RACER WINDSCREEN FOR THE 2020 YAMAHA YZF-R1 Now available for the Yamaha YZF-R1, model year 2020, is the R-Racer Windscreen from Puig Hi-Tech Parts. The R-Racer series of windscreen is the product of working with the Repsol Honda MotoGP Team and the WorldSBK Racing Team. With a height that is 70mm higher than the OEM windscreen, Puig’s R-Racer windscreens are engineered to offer the rider maximized vision and enhanced aerodynamics. The R-Racer windscreens are tested in a virtual wind tunnel where the windscreen’s taller height deflects wind that would, behind a stock windscreen, hit the rider’s helmet and shoulders. The result of Puig’s engineering and manufacturing process is increased aerodynamic coefficiency (Cx). The R-Racer is manufactured in 3mm highimpact lightweight, yet durable acrylic with a 2mm rounded edge. The screen is available in smoke, dark smoke, clear, and black for the 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1.

BMW
F 900 XR WORDS: FREDDIE LEX IMAGES: KEVIN WING
Eager to build upon the success of its S 1000 XR, BMW builds a more compact, but equally sporty version in the F 900 XR.
MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 21
THE FIRST RIDE: BMW F 900 XR
BMW INVENTED THE adventure-sport segment with its fabulous and upright S 1000 XR ($17,645). Now Motorrad wants to reach another group of riders with its more compact, but still peppy F 900 XR ($11,695). Positioned as a middleweight entry, the F 900 XR is perfect for those that want to taste the thrill of upright sport riding in a friendlier package. The 900 XR shares underpinnings with its naked roadster brother, the F 900 R. It is powered by a punched-out 895cc parallel-twin based off the power unit inside the F 850 adventure rig. BMW claims the engine is good for 99 horsepower at the crank, which is identical to the R version. The XR however includes a proprietary engine, ASC and ABS mapping engineered for its added weight and riding character. Swing a leg over the XR and its noticeably taller than its more low slung R-spec brother. The XR gets a taller seat and longer travel suspension that elevates seat height by an inch. It’s worth noting that Motorrad offers an assortment of OE seat height and density options. It also sells a suspension lowering kit to better accommodate height-challenged riders. Adjustability is the name of the game with this BMW as every 22 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020

control surface, including lever and brake pedal, and handlebar position (in terms of roll) can be tweaked based on rider preference. There’s also a plethora of electronic settings, but we will get to that in a minute... The ergonomics package is relaxed, especially compared to the R-model. Specifically the XR uses a taller handlebar with more rearward sweep. The position of the footpegs feels more relaxed, too and we appreciate having an front fairing and manual twoposition adjustable windscreen. You can feel a degree of engine vibration through the controls, however it’s the good kind, letting you know that you’re riding a fun-loving motorcycle. The vibration feels precisely tuned like the strings of a guitar. Credit the engine’s uneven firing order designed to replicate the power pulses of a V-twin. The engine and exhaust note are equally pleasing, and if the engine was hidden with a lower fairing you’d be hard pressed to know that it isn’t a V-twin. Well done, BMW. Twist the throttle and the XR’s 895cc parallel-twin gets with the program regardless of rpm. Rev it high, or lug it low and this compact twin doles out copious spread of torque making it easy to zip away from stop lights. A precise-feeling six-speed gearbox and well-weighted cable-actuated clutch make for a motorcycle that is not only fun, but easy to operate, too. BMW’s Gear Assist Pro option is available as an upcharge which allows for clutchless up, and downshifts. Lean the 483-pound XR into turns and you’ll be surprised by its level of alhethism. Despite its above average curb weight, it remains light on its feet and maneuvers around slow speed turns with the type of enthusiasm of smaller bikes. The suspension does a marvelous job of skating that fine line between everyday comfort and sport handling on twisty stretches of pavement. Although the fork lacks adjustment, it offers near-perfect calibration for everyday use. The direct-mount shock adds a handy preload adjustment knob so riders can tweak height based on handling preference and/or vehicle load/weight. The rear suspension also offers rebound damping adjustment. In the braking department, the XR benefits from well-tuned triple disc hydraulic brakes that employ track-grade radial mount front calipers and an oversized rear brake disc. The hardware is not only MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25

power but responsive and benefits from the security of always-on ABS so the threat of tire lock-up is virtually eliminated. Oddly enough, our F 900 XR wasn’t outfitted with cruise control, nor heated grips. However it did include Motorrad’s optional $350 Ride Modes Pro. Ride Modes Pro adds to the standard ‘rain’ and ‘road’ global settings by unlocking IMU-powered traction control/ABS and more intimate engine/throttle response. Although we couldn’t note much of a difference between the ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Dynamic Pro’, settings, both allow for hard charging riding maneuvers with a less intrusive degree of electronic intervention at speed. Rider’s can also choose to manually disable traction control, however ABS is fixed. Keeping tabs on everything is a huge 6.5-inch color TFT display. The panel is one of the finest-looking screens used on a production motorcycle, regardless of price point. Rich in features, the display is manipulated via BMW’s proprietary multi-function wheel located on the handlebar. Furthemore rider’s can pair their smartphone to the bike via BMW’s Bluetooth-enabled BMW Motorrad Connected free iOS app. This allows for turn-by-turn directions on the display. Rider’s can also monitor other vehicle settings including fuel level and maintenance chores. The engine drinks from a 4.1-gallon fuel tank, but considering how thirsty the engine can be we wish Motorrad engineers would have fitted a larger capacity tank– especially considering how adept the XR is at touring. Soon BMW will also be offering lockable hard luggage which will further elevate its touring ability. Like its naked brother, the XR impresses with not only its versatility but it’s high-level of performance inside the middleweight class. However it’s added touring prowess does come at a cost– with it priced $2,700 more than the F 900 R. Is it worth it? If long-distance riders are in your future, then absolutely. But if you’re a rider who favors local, around town rides, you’ll save some serious coin with the R. Either way, you can’t go wrong with these BMW 900s. 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020

MOTOAMERICA'S SUPERBIKE SPEEDFEST POSTPONED UNTIL FALL OF 2020
What would have been MotoAmerica’s summer sizzler in California has been rescheduled for the weekend of October 23 through 25. The original date for the GEICO Motorcycle Speedfest at Monterey was the weekend of July 10 through 12. California is still sorting out how they are going to handle spectator events, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “With the way things are in California right now, there is no way we can race with spectators at Laguna Seca in July,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “Thus, we’ve decided to reschedule the event for October and allow 34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020
our fans the time to change their travel plans and make new ones that include the Speedfest at Monterey this fall. As always, the safety of our fans, our teams and our riders are of the utmost importance to us and postponing the race is our best option to ensure that.” With this latest rescheduling of the 2020 season, the Superbike Speedfest will now be the ninth round of the scheduled ten stops, following Indianapolis, Indiana (October 9-11), and preceding the final round in Austin, Texas (November 13-15).
DUCATI MAKES IT OFFICIAL WITH JACK MILLER FOR 2021 MOTOGP TEAM Jack Miller, the 25 year old Australian, will be moving up from the satellite Pramac Ducati team to a factory team with Ducati beginning in the 2021 season, replacing Danilo Petrucci and snagging one of the two factory seats. Miller and Ducati have agreed to a one year contract, with an option to extend into 2022.
in 2018.
“We are convinced that Jack has all the right skills to fight continuously for the positions that matter, in every race, starting already this season with the Desmosedici GP20 of the Pramac Racing Team, and taking a further step forward next year thanks to the support Miller made his debut on the GP grid in 2015 of the Ducati Team.” – Claudio Domenicali, and then joined Ducati Pramac Racing team CEO of Ducati Motor Holding.

THE PRESS ROOM MORE MOTOGP CANCELLATIONS – SILVERSTONE AND PHILLIP ISLAND ARE NIXED GP teams and fans, alike, will have to look forward to 2021 to see race action in Great Britain and Australia. Dorna Sports, FIM, and IRTA made the tough decision to cancel the British Grand Prix, scheduled for August 28th through the 30th, at the Silverstone Circuit. The cancelation of the British GP also cancels the British Talent Cup that was scheduled for the same weekend. The Australia Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of October 23rd through the 25th

at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, has also been canceled. “We’re saddened to have to announce the cancellation of these iconic events after finding no way through the logistical and operational issues resulting from the pandemic and rearranged calendar. Silverstone and Phillip Island are always two of the most thrilling race weekends of the season, with both tracks never failing in their promise to deliver some of the closest racing in our Championship.” – Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports.
NO GP FOR THE TWIN RING MOTEGI CIRCUIT The Corona Virus strikes again. This time, the victim is the Motul Grand Prix of Japan that was scheduled for the weekend of October 16 through 18 at the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit. The Twin Ring Motegi Circuit has been a part of the GP calendar since 1999 and the home GP race for Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki. The cancellation of the 2020 Grand Prix of Japan will mark the first time that a Japanese GP has not been on the schedule since 1986. “It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of the Motul Grand Prix of Japan at the very unique Motegi circuit, meaning we will not have a Japanese Grand Prix on the calendar for the first time since 1986.” – Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports.

THE WAITING IS THE HARDEST PART MotoGP decides its fate... MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 39
THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. I'M NOT GONNA lie. This COVID-19 has dealt an almost knockout blow to my overall well being. Instead of bouncing out of bed, I lie there thinking, “What’s the use?” Throw in that in my part of the country, the weather has been crappy, overcast, and cold. Also, throw in the fact, I’m not working. I don’t know when 'dat check is gonna come in and the biggest blow of them all that hits like a 1986 Mike Tyson uppercut... No MotoGP!!! Why even live?! Just as I was picking out caskets on Amazon, I get a text from the boss, "Where’s that article?!” Uh oh. Death will have to wait. Time to work! The boss speaks! But wait. What exactly is it that I’m writing about? The last piece I wrote about was how this could be Rossi’s swan song and this damn virus is going to ruin it! So what was there to write about? And then, as if the GP Gods were listening, sanctions across the planet were slowly lifting and sports was back, or at least plans were being hatched. MotoAmerica would be racing at the end of May, but with no fans. The Bundesliga League played to an empty stadium, but... Sports was back! Even GP riders were finally given the green flag to ride again! It warmed my heart like a kid on Christmas Eve to see riders doing laps at numerous circuits. But what’s the plan, exactly? The plan has, and will revolve around COVID-19! It’s like traveling with a 3-year-old. You can say what you’re going to do but if that kid wants to stops and poop, then damn it, that’s what you’re doing! Plan on eating healthy? Not if that kid wants McDonald's! Right now, lil COVID controls the trip! But tentatively here’s the plan: Start sometime in July at Jerez. 40 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020

That is it! That is all we know for sure. What’s been discussed? Multiple rounds at the Jerez Circuit. Maybe use Estoril in Portugal. No fans. Fly always? Oh boy! Can you risk moving the two-wheeled circus to other countries traveling commercial? Dorna just said, as of press time, the GP of Japan can’t run without fans, so now what? This is me talking out of my ass - which is why I get the big bucks - but... 1. Why not keep the championships in Europe, with no international traveling? Hey, as much as I would love for GP to come to the U.S., we don’t have the same fever as Europe. They thirst for GP as if it is their life’s blood, while in the U.S.A. We sip it like boxed wine at a freshman party! 2. Multiple races at circuits to make up for missing out on the fly-always, but make the second race counterclockwise, if possible. 3. No fans! I personally don’t think the riders will bitch about this, one iota! It’s gotta get old quick to have some grown ass man ask to take pics with you as you’re about to go do the business, especially if that grown-ass man is writing this article and can’t help himself. Apologies to the entire grid at every race I’ve ever been to! 4. Still finish up in Valencia! It can be done, but again... lil COVID controls everything along with Formula One! Let’s be serious. As much as I love MotoGP, Formula One rules this game of racing, and as Metallica once so eloquently put it, "Sad but true!" Luckily, Formula One seems more hellbent on getting their season underway and health precautions be damned! Or as I like to call it, "The United States Approach!” Let's just hope no one shows up at a race circuit with assault rifles, demanding they open up Mugello! Why finish up in Valencia, still? If you’ve been MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 45
THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. to Valencia in November it gets pretty chilly. You don’t want to extend the season any longer than that unless you can finish in Thailand or Qatar. Qatar is not a bad idea for a season finale but the atmosphere is staler than a two-week-old liter of Coke. If the championship was decided in Qatar they’d have to celebrate with sparkling water and graham crackers. Let it finish in Valencia and then give the riders a well-deserved break. For argument's sake... I’ll even add another one just for the sake of fun. 5. Race circuits should erect giant screen televisions in the parking lots of these Circuits, so people can watch the race from the outside while hearing the action on the inside! Kind of like a drive-in movie! All the while, practicing social distancing. Truth is, as much as I like... I’m sorry, love seeing GP live, it’s actually better on The MOTOGP. COM Video Pass! You see things you miss live. Steve Day and Matt Birt are so good you won’t even miss the fans as they bring the excitement in their voices and you actually feel what they’re feeling. Worse comes to worst, pipe in the crowd noise. They’ve done it before for other events where the crowd was lame. Do it for the GP! I’m pretty sure the crazed Spanish and Italian fans can make enough noise on the outside of the circuits that they’ll still be heard inside the Circuit! Don’t believe me? Ask anyone who’s been to Mugello. I went in 2013. My ears have never been the same since! Pazzo! Pazzo! These are my suggestions, again, talking outta' my ass and once again, this all depends on that bastard COVID. Another thing that makes MotoGP unique and is almost impossible to compare to other sports is that it is truly a World Championship. Not some fake World Championship like in the NBA, NFL, or MLB. lanes THIS PANDEMIC HAS hit people in many different ways. From the good to the bad, boring to entertaining. I asked my friend Scott, who is a motorcycle safety instructor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, how he has been handling this “new, new. Devonne: What have you done differently than you normally would during this time? Have you ridden more than you normally do? Scott: I have definitely been riding less, which I think is the opposite for most. I think people are riding more. Devonne: As a motorcycle instructor, have classes been slower than usual? Scott: Classes are busier and sold out. We have been closed for months and had to cancel a lot of classes so people have been itching for us to reopen. There are also MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 59
THE LIFE: THE INSIDE LINE people who have wanted to take it before but couldn’t because of work. Now that people are out of work or aren’t as busy, they are able to take the courses. MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) released an article that people are choosing to ride because it makes them feel more comfortable versus public transportation and carpooling. Motorcycles are convenient and inexpensive. Devonne: Do you think that more people will start riding motorcycles more often as MSF believes? Is it for the reason of boredom or maybe a new interest? Scott: I think people will get into riding because it gets them outdoors instead of being cooped up in their homes. It’s similar to the increase in bicycles and pedestrians.

Devonne: Do you notice that people are riding more than normal? Why is that? Scott: Yes, because they are working from home and have more energy at the end of the day versus being in the office. Normally they don’t have the luxury like many people as myself do. Devonne: Did you take any trips? If so, did you ride? Scott: I took a trip to Blue Ridge, Georgia. The trip was actually previously planned and paid in advance before the pandemic, so my brother and I still decided to go, even though Airbnb was offering refunds. Scott, like many others, is finding his way in this "new, new" and adjusting to this new life, for the foreseeable future. MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 61

TOP 8.5 REASONS TO RIDE THE RACETRACK MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 71
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: RIDE THE TRACK
FOR THE AVERAGE person, motorcycle riding is not always at the forefront of our minds. In the middle of our busy lives, often we unwittingly have a conversation with someone that reminds us of reasons why we dedicate so much of our lives to riding and racing motorcycles. In a recent interview with a columnist writing for a mainstream publication (far, far away from the world of motorcycling) I was asked what it was we did at a racetrack. Who were typical students and why were they coming to a school? What were some of the typical topics covered and why? The writer was not a motorcycle guy but was a ski racer (a hobby that many motorcyclists share) and we drew several parallels. Our 10-minute interview turned into a 30-minute conversation before either of us knew it. As we discussed both 72 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020
the "how" and "why" people ride the track, the excitement on both ends of the phone escalated pretty quickly. REASON 1 With the capabilities of many modern motorcycles, a rider can put the average sportbike in second gear, roll the throttle open and then be subject to arrest in a matter of seconds. The racetrack removes all the restrictions and punitive risk associated with exploring the limits of our machines. This was easy an easy place to start. REASON 2 Following right along with reason 1, the risks associated with riding the track are considerably lower than on the street. With the absence of cars, trucks, phone poles, mailboxes and a myriad
of other obstacles the racetrack affords a rider significantly better odds of walking away from a crash. Not only are you only riding with other motorcycles, but riders are required to have proper safety gear. Can you still get hurt on the track? Of course. Do you ride faster on the track than on the street? Absolutely. Can riders fall at over 100mph on the track and walk away unscathed? It happens all the time. Does that happen on the street? Almost never.
truck. The common trait that frequently transcends all the diversity is that a majority of these people are those who really "live" their lives. They aren't averse to risk, enjoy a challenge, and aren't afraid to work. As a result, the track is a place where uncommonly strong bonds are formed and I have made many lifelong friends at the track. Long after the novelty runs out and adrenaline fix is satisfied, the relationships built at the track will keep you coming back for years.
REASON 3 When it came to the "who" came to the racetrack, the answer was not particularly concrete. In 25 years teaching the Penguin School I've seen riders from their teens to their 70s, doctors to mailmen, male, female, big, small, wealthy to scraping together every last dollar needed to get gas in the
REASON 4 The track is the perfect laboratory for learning. The best way to train yourself in a new skill is to perform the action enough times that muscle memory is established. On average, track riders get to repeat the same set of corners once every 90 seconds. This provides the opportunity for MAY 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 73

The racetrack gives This is a good thing. As a result, encounters with riders the opportunity to experiment with higher the limits of traction are infrequent and often a bit speeds with an intelligent plan. No one arrives harrowing. On the track, riders have significantly at the track with the knowledge of exactly what less "surplus" grip and as a result, they develop the maximum speed is in any corner. In the controlled environment of With this familiarity, riders get the signals much the track, students are taught how to purposely earlier if a corner on the street tightens up more approach the limit so that they can both (1) than they expected and they have a much greater recognize it and (2) free up the additional traction likelihood of staying upright.
76 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2020
REASON 7 Since street riders have so much available grip in most corners, they are able to get away with all types of things with regards to how they sit on the motorcycle and input the controls that would severely hamper them on the track. Learning the proper body position and inputs on the track will directly translate into more available grip on the track. The result? Perhaps a rider who encounters an unexpected twist in the road will have the extra traction needed to stay on the pavement!
REASON 8.5 The combination of athletic skill, mental acuity, and bravery in track riding produces an adrenaline rush and sense of satisfaction/accomplishment you will find difficult to replicate anywhere else. The quest for the perfect lap never ends, and there is always another skill to master and another step to take. As the conversation ended, the writer left me excited to try out our sport for himself. I found myself thinking about next season and looking forward to picking up where we left off in developing our bike and a new skill last season. I hope that we all spend our offseason going to the gym, reading up on riding skills, and saving up for that new bolt-on that will make your track experience even more enjoyable next season.
REASON 8 On the track, riders learn that matter what the goal (safety or speed), the method is the same. When looking at things like line selection and track strategy, the fastest line is usually the one that frees up the traction for the action you would most likely need to get yourself out of trouble. Increased speed and decreased risk are no longer mutually Until next time... Ride fast. Ride safe! exclusive, they are most often accomplished together.
