THE THING ABOUT HONDAS I have always been fascinated with Honda motorcycles. Ive ridden plenty but have never owned one. I did come close to picking up a pristine RC 51 many, many years ago, but did not pull the trigger. But they have always fascinated me… Honda’s, in general.
astonishing number championships under their belt and an impressive lot of star riders that currently or previously called Honda their home. No, I’ve never owned one. But I admit that I get excited every time I watch Marc Marquez, when he’s healthy, throw his leg over his RC XX and create magic lap after lap. Now, Honda creates a new tier in their legacy with the 2021 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. The Fireblade SP is already making waves WorldSBK and turning heads on the track and in the streets. Looks and namesake aside, it has my attention.
What I do know is that the brand has had a massive impact on the moto world from the manufacturer side, across the table to the consumer market. The Honda lineup of sportbikes is a formidable roster of performance driven machines. The easy words would be, “they must be doing something right.” But easy doesn’t always fit the bill. INDUSTRY NEWS BMW MOTORRAD INTRODUCES THEIR ALL-NEW M 1000 RR
The moto-world was just coming to terms with the symmetrical styling of the BMW S1000 RR, let alone all of its technological bells and whistles. Alas, German engineering doesn't rest and while we were salivating over the 2019 RR, BMW was already deeply involved in the development of what was to be and is now, next. Here a few items to take note of... The BMW M 1000 RR, while rooted in the elemental concepts of its predecessor, to call it derivative is misguided and disrespectful. This is not an S model. Tech and data derived from the WorldSBK stage, along with a healthy dose of creative and savvy mechanical design and execution has produced a new level of what is to be considered a production motorcycle, as far as BMWs are concerned. The M 1000 RR is the German manufacturer's first two-wheeled M model, joining the ranks of their prestigious 4-wheeled sport competition packages. 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020
BMW boasts that the M 1000 RR's inline fourcylinder engine produces 212hp and a maximum torque output of 113Nm, with an overall motorcycle wet weight of 423 pounds. The engine has been optimized for peak performance with the inclusion of new 2-ring forged Mahle Automotive Group pistons, adapted combustion chambers, and an increased compression rating of 13.5. They've included longer and lighter Pankle titanium connecting rods, titanium valves, slimmer and lighter rocker arms, fully machined intake ports with a new air duct design, as well as overall improvements to the camshafts and intake areas. Most notable, aside from the BMW M package livery, are the factory-installed winglets that create downforce to keep this rocket from inadvertently leaving terra firma. At speed, pressure from the carbon-fiber wings helps the tires to maintain a premium contact patch for optimum grip, additionally allowing for later braking under the

THE 2020 HANDBUILT SHOW: CANCELED Revival Cycles, owners and organizers of the annual "built not bought" custom motorcycle event, The Handbuilt Show, has just confirmed that this year's show has been canceled. The Handbuilt Show typically occurs on the same Spring weekend as the US round of MotoGP in Austin, TX. Victims of the COVID pandemic, Revival Cycles rescheduled the 2020 event when it was announced that MotoGP was postponed to the weekend of November 13 through 15. When the Austin round of MotoGP was canceled for 2020, the Handbuilt Show made plans to move forward with their own weekend of events. Unfortunately, with the threat of COVID back on the rise, Revival Cycles has had to cancel this year's Handbuilt Show completely. The announced that all ticket holders can redeem their tickets at the 2021 Handbuilt Show, scheduled for the weekend of April 16 through 18.

AFTER YEARS OF getting decimated on track by the new generation of high-revving big-bore superbikes, Big Red emerges from its decadelong slumber with an all-new CBR1000RR-R. It is designed to go windscreen-to-windscreen with the best of the best in what’s evolved into the ultra-high-performance superbike class. Inheriting the Fireblade moniker, the triple-R spec CBR finally leverages Honda’s advanced MotoGP know-how for riders that live life by the tick of the stopwatch. Tucked in behind the windscreen, the new CBR is roomier. This reverses Honda’s 2017-generation

CBR which was increasingly more tiny than the already compact (but still aptly proportioned 2008-2016 gen bike). The clip-ons are wider, with a more racy stance, and the fuel tank cover is lower, adding cockpit room. As RPMs climb, you can tell there’s something special under the hood. The liquid-cooled 999cc inline-four is smaller in size and finally benefits from modern superbike architecture. More radical bore/stroke measurements (5mm larger bore measurement as compared to its predecessor) and low-inertia finger follower valvetrain. This allows for accurate movement at high rpm. Still responsive at lower revs, the engine has a bigger appetite for rpm with a strong, but smooth spread of top-end pull. The 2020 CBR revs approximately 1,000 rpm higher than before with an explosive and shriek-like sound reminiscent of BMW’s S1000RR. The engine emits a louder and more aggressive bark from the muffler. Honda claims a competitive in class 186 horsepower, SEPTEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25
THE FIRST RIDE: CBR1000RR-R FIREBLADE SP but we expect the triple-R to produce around 170 hp at the rear 200-series Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP in OE trim. An overhauled and more effective electronics package complements the RR-R’s powertrain and chassis providing superior integration versus the more rudimentary setup on the last CBR. Adjustable engine power modes, wheelie control, HSTC (Honda speak for traction control) and engine brake control are all standard, as is a bi-direction electronic quickshifter. The ride-by-wire throttle response is more naturalfeeling than the original 2017-spec setup, but it would have been nice if Honda offered independent throttle response adjustment. Instead, it is integrated into the five-levels of power adjustment. Handlebar-mounted switch gear permits changes on the fly and a five-inch color TFT display keeps tabs on everything. Aggressive launch control mapping allows for hard, but more consistent race starts versus what you could do

without electronic help. Although the wheelbase has lengthened considerably, in typical Honda form the CBR remains as nimble as ever. It also offers a high degree of stability at speed and at lean — features that Honda’s CBR has historically boasted. Semi-active gas-charged suspension from Ohlins provides excellent control with responsive programming that can take into account extreme camber and elevation changes and performs better than other manufactures' auto-damping setups. This affords a high degree of control no matter what type of road surface you’re rolling over. The previous CBR1000RR’s front brakes were atrocious, especially on ABS models. Honda did its homework and the braking package is more consistent-feeling with the right amount of power and feel at the lever. We also appreciate the Brembo-sourced radial-mount master cylinder and the adjustable engine brake control which helps

THE FIRST RIDE: CBR1000RR-R FIREBLADE SP slow the bike, electronically, if desired. Aesthetically, the CBR looks meaner than past renditions. It has a more edgy shape with more angular body panels. Clean-looking winglets have been neatly integrated into the side fairings— adding downforce on the front end at speed. Yet, in typical Honda fashion, its plastic clothing is the most slippery in the class, says Honda after extensive wind tunnel testing. With the release of the RR-R Fireblade SP, Big Red finally has a legitimate player in the liter-andabove superbike class. Yet this isn’t any ordinary superbike. It’s a $28,500 Honda. That means the Fireblade includes careful attention to details and a bespoke finish that other manufacturers in the segment can’t duplicate. Only time will tell if the new CBR is a true contender for World Superbike podiums but Honda riders can rest assured that the giant has awoken.

VALENTINO ROSSI ANNOUNCES HIS TEAM FOR THE 2021 MOTOGP SEASON
It's official. After several weeks of speculations, Valentino "The Doctor" Rossi officially confirmed his agreement with the Malaysian Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team. The agreement secures his 2021 GP seat alongside his new teammate, Franco Morbidelli.
Rossi has earned seven world titles, 89 race wins, 199 podiums,55 pole positions and has set the record for fastest laps 76 times. He is the only rider in history to win 125cc, 250cc, 500cc, and MotoGP World Championships.
2021 will be Rossi's ninth season in the GP Rossi has been synonymous with the sport class, as begins his new journey as part of of MotoGP since he rolled onto the grid in Petronas Yamaha SRT, competing aboard a 2000. Over his illustrious 20 years, thus far, Yamaha YZR-M1.

We constantly watch a sporting event and quietly say to ourselves, “I can do that!” Or the famous, “I still got it!” However, rarely do we feel the agony that these gladiators go through. Three sporting events come to mind where I felt that agony.
These were sporting events you felt deep in your soul. "Hell Hot" was one description of Jerez. One look at Tetsuta Nagashima being helped off his bike and virtually collapsing in a chair in his garage after the Moto2 race let me know what these two-wheeled warriors were dealing with.

Vinales on Pole. Newcomer Pecco Bagnaia would occupy the spot of Marc Marquez as the Alien of all Aliens decided to let his injured broken arm heal before deciding to race again. But this race wasn’t without its walking wounded. The injury report for MotoGP sounds like a week nine NFL report. Alex Rins, fractured shoulder. Cal Crutchlow, broken scaphoid. Andreas Dovizioso, broken collarbone. And of course, the aforementioned Marquez. These are the humans on the scrap heap. The machines would be next and ultimately the dagger in a racers dream finish. Overcoming an injury and riding is one-thing.
A mechanical failure always spells doom. But I’m getting ahead of myself. At the start of the race, it was the Yamaha holeshot device working better than anything on this Earth at this moment in time. All three Yammies got off to a terrific start with Fabio getting the holeshot and checking out like a bad marriage. He was never seriously threatened after this, which left Rossi, Vinales, and a slew of oncomers to challenge for the podium. All comers were either dispatched by mechanical or faults of their own volition. Franko Morbidelli looked set to catch the Doctor when engine troubles failed him. It was Pecco Bagnaia whose fate seemed the cruelest. With an almost certain second place in the bag and six laps from the finish, Bagnaia’s Ducati spewed more smoke than a barbeque in Alabama. He was done. This left Vinales and Rossi to fight for second and third with a distant but close enough Takaaki Nakagami to pick up the pieces if it went wrong for one of the two. Only Michael Jordan and the 1986 Chicago Bears have played better defense than what Valentino Rossi did on this blistery day in Spain. He held off Maverick and showed the world there is still plenty of fight left in this 41-year-old. Then, through a mistake of his own doing, Rossi allowed Vinales to pass with one lap left and claimed his first podium in well over a year. Even though I have written about the need for Rossi to retire, he alluded to the politics in the garage and how the balance of the bike is not suited to his liking. Reading between the lines, Yamaha has set the bike up for Vinales and Quartararo. But being the veteran that he is, Rossi found a way to make the bike work for him this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how Yamaha moves forward. This race was one of the few races where I felt the heat and I damn sure witnessed the carnage. The Ducatis sent six bikes into battle and finished with only three. This race was brutal, in every sense of the word. Seeing that look of utter exhaustion by the riders after the race only further drove home the point. This is why the ride by Rossi proves that he’s not lost the will to win. In sweltering conditions, the 41-yearold looked every bit as poised as any rider on the grid, maybe even more. I thought the heat would do him in but I was wrong. What's next? The Brno Circuit in the Czech Republic. Hopefully, it will be cooler than the Hellish conditions in Jerez. It will be the return of the Champ, down "fiddy" points to Quartararo. You’re going to have a desperate Marquez. There will be a Yamaha that’s great off the line but its engine has about as much reliability as a truthful Lance Armstrong deposition. And last but not least, you have the cool, calm, serial killer approach of Andreas Dovizioso, who didn’t hemorrhage as much from a track that he’s never performed particularly well. This series is heating up more than a 3 pm race at the Jerez Angel Nieto Circuit in July. With only 11 more races to go, every point and position is crucial. We can only hope that we are spared the cruelty of another Jerez bloodbath. To put it bluntly, that race was Hell. But a 9 times World Champion, by the name of Valentino Rossi, proved that on this particular Sunday afternoon, as AC/DC once sang, Hell ain’t a bad place to be! WHEN COVID-19 STARTED at the beginning of this year, most of us never thought it would still be going on in October. People are still in quarantine, out of jobs, working harder than ever and some are taking advantage of the situation. If you are one of those people who now have a bit more time than usual, depending on the situation, you are blessed. Back in April, I thought to myself how great it would be to take a road trip across the country, but never got to it and wasn't really sure if I was willing to do it on my own. EJ however, was. She started considering riding solo crosscountry during her two-year recovery from a terrible motorcycle accident in 2017. Although she has healed significantly, she has sustained permanent paralysis in her right arm and hand due to brachial plexus. During her recovery, which lasted from 2017 to 2020, she learned how to walk and most importantly, ride again. She had to adjust to being left-handed, and take time to not only heal physically but mentally, promising herself that she would not continue to put off her cross-country trip and really "live." In the Spring of 2020, she made a list of routes she's always wanted to take and decided to string them all together. Most people who plan road trips tend to bring company along. did not care to, as she is an introvert and being able to be in her own head, with just her bike and the open roads is invigorating. Prior to her trip, she took a small road trip, which she called a "test run" and spent two weeks riding in North Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina. After that trip, she knew she was ready, however, she needed a new rear tire, chain, sprockets, and an oil change. On July 16, she started her trip on her 2013 Honda CB500X from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 765 miles later, she made it to Chattanooga, Tennessee, that same day. Once she arrived, she started to plan her next route, waking up before sunrise and concluding her day at sundown. She rode a total of 11,291 miles in 31 days, visiting 24 states and 16 national parks. Temperatures ranged from 31-118 degrees. Luckily, there was very little rain. During her ride in Sedona, Arizona, she nearly hit two deer but managed to handle the situation. There was another incident where she had her wallet stolen in Mount Hood, Oregon. There were much better times than the occasional irritants. Along the way, she stayed in Airbnb's, motels and a wagon, which led her to meet incredible people. She was able to have a flexible schedule and take advantage of other activities, such as wing walking on a 1943 biplane, zip-lining through the redwoods of California and flying her first glider. Although she was happy a majority of the time, EJ felt at her happiest in Desolate, Utah. There were no cell towers and not a person in sight for miles. That is when she realized that being on her bike brings her the most joy in life. She asked herself many times if she was excited to get back home, but then realized that it doesn't matter where in the world she is. "If I am on my motorcycle, I'm already home." RIDING A MOTORCYCLE around a track demands a combination of physical skill, mental acuity and bravery that I have yet to find in another sport. With this also comes the endless pursuit of progress, finding those precious seconds that separate us from the riders that we compete against. It doesn't matter if you are a track day rider or a professional racer, the spirit of competition and the desire to progress is something that I find dwells within the hearts of most riders I know. As we get more experienced, finding those seconds becomes more difficult. On most circuits in the United States, a one-second difference in lap times equates to an average speed difference of only about 1mph. We often need to search in the details to break through those plateaus and get where we want to go. In this month's article, we will discuss one of the most valuable places that riders leave time on the table and detail some of the prerequisites needed to get this time back. As a rider goes through a typical corner the order of operations is nearly always the same. One of the keys to finding that next second (again, only about 1mph in average speed) is to seek out the little gaps in this process that we can eliminate. One of the gaps that is the most costly is the delay between turning the bars and the re-application of the throttle. If you run through turn one at your local track in your mind, there is often a lot to do in a very short period of time. The greatest stress for most people is to make sure that they slow the bike down enough to be able to make the apex. Once a rider completes this task, there is often a momentary sigh of relief before they move on to the next mission (getting on the gas)... and this is where there is much to gain. The advantage gained from getting back on the gas as early as possible is substantial, especially on corners that precede a long drive. An extra 70 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

couple mph off the apex here is sustained all the way down the next straight and will have a significant effect on your lap times. These segments are perhaps the single most important factor in going fast on the track but are usually maximized last because they require the entry of the corner to be executed properly first. In nearly twenty years of teaching riders to go fast at the Penguin School, one thing we consistently stress is the importance of finishing the major bar input in each corner before getting back on the gas. Your number one priority in a drive focused corner is to have the turn finished before you reach the apex. This will not only make you faster but will keep you much safer as well. Once the drive has started, there should only be thumb and forefinger "guidance" on the bars. It is critical that your arms are soft and the bike is allowed to stand up on these exits. In order to ensure that the turn is complete by the time the bike is ready for the gas, riders must work to make their major bar input as quickly as possible without upsetting the chassis. The shorter the duration of the major bar input, the less track is consumed and the easier it is for a rider to safely get back on the gas early. In order to execute this quick turn, riders need to be able to look up and envision not only the location of the apex but also the trajectory of the motorcycle at the apex. With the major direction change complete before the apex, riders are then ready for the next step. The throttle needs to be opened as soon as possible after the major bar input is complete. It is in this area that tenths of a second really matter. To put it in perspective, let's look at what happens if a rider "relaxes" for even a quarter of a second after the turn before cracking on the gas. Imagine rolling through a corner with a 48mph apex speed, where your motorcycle is traveling about 72 feet per second. In a quarter of a second, your bike has traveled 18 feet (almost three bike lengths). Imagine starting a drag race with another rider SEPTEMBER 2020 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 73

that allows him to get an 18-foot rolling start before you can take off. This is like having a rider who starts a row behind you on the grid get to jump up next to you before you let out the clutch. How far away are they going to be by the time you get to turn one? Further, than you want them to be, that's for sure! The keys to opening the throttle are early and smooth. The initial crack of the gas should be slow, and the rate of roll-on increases as the throttle opens. As a guide, we always tell students that the first 25% of throttle opening should take as long as the second 75%. It is that slow first 25% that will make you both faster and safer. You will have a direct connection to the rear tire and a feeling of control. When the throttle is snapped on too quickly, there is also often a lag between what happens at your right wrist and what happens at the rear tire... and we all know what can happen next. In a perfect world, we would be applying exactly the amount of throttle that keeps the tire at the limit of traction throughout the entire drive. If we made a hp versus lean angle and mph" graph, you can imagine a line that would represent the limit of traction. At nearly full lean (where the initial crack of the gas should occur), it does not take much power to step over the limit of traction. However, as the bike stands up and gains speed, that line slopes upward more and more rapidly. Most riders use little or no throttle in the initial (and most important) area of this graph. The next time you are on the track, pick out a corner that leads to a long straight and make it your mission to fill in as much of the graph as possible. You'll do this by making your major bar input as short and precise as possible, relaxing your bar input as the bike reaches full lean, and quickly cracking the gas back on with a slow and smooth roll-on.
