Dear Readers, Happy New Year and Welcome to the Spring 2016 edition of the Sports & Activities Directory! The school year is back in full swing and our kids are doing so many wonderful things. They are succeeding on the field and in the classroom. In this issue, be sure to check out such topics as Stoneman Douglas High School DECA story about hosting their annual “Shark Tank Challenge,” an annual event where students present their ideas and inventions to the business community for feedback, just like the popular TV show. Also, JP Taravella High School hosted a career and technical education event for high school kids to learn about career opportunities and trades. Plus, an informative article from Broward College on continuing education right here in our local community. Also, congratulations to Broward County Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for being named Florida’s 2016 superintendent of the year. Please be sure to see our extensive Event section that highlights all the events that are going on in our cities. On February 19th – 21st, the City of Parkland will be hosting its annual Family Fun Fest that includes rides, games, vendors, and entertainment for the entire weekend. And then in March, don’t miss the annual Coral Springs Festival of the Arts and Garden Fest on March 20th. In this issue you’ll also be able to read about the 12U Parkland Rangers Tackle Football team that made it to third place in the Pop Warner National Championships! We could not be more proud of our local boys! Spring season offers so many sports for our children to participate in, including baseball, lacrosse, flag football, track & field and many more. There are some spaces still left in spring leagues. Plus, be sure to check the dates for fall leagues that have registration approaching. I hope you enjoy reading and using the Spring Edition of the Sports & Activities Directory to keep you in the know and help you spend quality time and have fun with your family. Thank you for the continued positive feedback and please continue to send your story ideas and photos and remember to plan for summer camp early by checking out our Camp Preview section!

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “T
oday’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,” says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to
businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

EDICATION. In the simplest of definitions by MerriamWebster, it is “a self-sacrificing devotion.” For many, many years and on a daily basis, parents of the athletes of the Parkland Rangers’ 130lb 12U Pop Warner Pee Wee Tackle Football Team have brought their children to practice regardless of what their day was like or if the weather was cold or rainy and even if they just didn’t feel like going. Monday through Friday: go to school, do their homework and then attend practice in the evening, where they learn plays, run drills and learn technique. At practice, the team breaks into groups for position-specific training, then come together as a team to run plays with offense and defense; all to prepare them for the upcoming game on Saturday morning. After practice, the families return home where they shower and retire for the night so that they can be prepared to do it all again the next morning. In 2015, this group of ambitious ballers smashed through the glass ceiling by becoming one of only 8 teams, and the only team ever from Broward County, to represent the Southeast region at the ESPN Pop Warner Championship. To get there, the Parkland Rangers defeated three Florida teams as well as a team from Georgia qualifying them for the Pop Warner Super Bowl Championship week at Disney ESPN in December of 2015. In addition to a great season, at the championship the Rangers took care of North Carolina’s Wake Forest team with a play that landed on the Pop Warner Top 10 Plays. Trailing 8-0 at halftime, the Rangers were able to bring the game to a tie. The score then began to volley back and forth in favor of each team. With only a few minutes left on the clock, the score was 22-16, Wake Forest. The Rangers got the ball back with just 47 seconds on the clock, no time outs and 62 yards to go. They had saved their passing game for just such an opportunity, as if it were a story already written, Matt Hall completed a pass to Colman Bennett for a 12 yard pick up. Vincent Pagano then made a spectacular diving catch and the offense spiked the ball to stop the clock. In the final play of the game, Hall completed a pass to Mark Dorsett who ran the remaining 20 yards for a game-tying touchdown. With the resolve of a champion, kicker Vincent Pagano completed the 2-point conversion kick with 12 seconds left, thus ending the game with a score of 24-22, Rangers! Commentators were so captivated by the succinct teamwork
displayed by the Parkland Rangers they said it was one of the best games they had ever seen. This Quarter Finals victory propelled the team to the Semi Finals where they fell short to defending National Champions, Hoffman Estates of Chicago. To be a Parkland Ranger, fast feet and steady hands are not the only qualifying factors. All students on the team must be in good academic standing, which is closely monitored by the Pop Warner organization. Currently, nine players have a grade point average of 95% or higher and are Pop Warner AllAmerican Scholars. These athletes received recognition at the championship game as well as scholarships from Pop Warner. Coached by Ed Hoffman and his assistant coaches, including former NFL players Steve Shine and Donnell Bennett, the Rangers have unquestioningly had a phenomenal year. The team played eight regular season games and nine playoff games. Coach Hoffman is proud of his team’s Semi Finalist status and 4th place ranking in the nation. “We lost to the team that took first. It was just a great ride. The boys were a team, they were a UNIT of kids that really bonded and they are very excited about going back next year. I’ve never been around a group of kids that were more resilient and able to come from behind than this group of kids. These are relatively young kids, 11 and 12 year olds. To be able to pass with no time outs is just incredible.” Coach Hoffman recognizes the hard work done by his assistant coaches, as well. “We had a fantastic coaching staff. They did a great job of coaching these kids up on both technique and the mental side of the game; knowing where to go and when to do it. They are a very smart team and they coached them how to do it. I have to give credit to my assistant coaches.” The Parkland Rangers has football programs for kids from 6 to 15 years old and 40 pounds up to 180 pounds coupled with a cheer program for kids ages 5–12. The Rangers practice “Heads up Football®” a comprehensive program developed by USA Football to advance player safety in the game of football (USAFootball.com). The Parkland Rangers program is a non-profit organization and the team is composed of players from Parkland and other towns in Northern Broward County. new year is upon us and Parkland Flag Football is gearing up for another successful campaign. What began back in 1997 as a small city league with 120 players has grown to about 800 players today. Most of the league’s participants are from Parkland but kids from surrounding cities like Coral Springs and Coconut Creek also join. It’s expected that the league will have about 70 teams this season. Players range in age from 5 to 14 years old. The youngest division is made up entirely of 5 year olds. Their division is very instructional and their games are usually played on Saturday mornings. There’s also 3 divisions that are “girls only.” The all-girls divisions were added in 2006 and have been the league’s fastest growing segment. Games for all divisions are played at Pine Trails Park. The season begins in mid-August when school begins and ends in early November. Flag football is similar to what you see on Sunday afternoons. But instead of pads and helmets and tackling, the kids must remove a flag from a belt attached to the offensive player. It’s fun and it’s fast, and the kids enjoy the quick pace. Games and practices are just a quick hour long. No video game controllers here. Flag is the perfect weapon for parents who

want their children up and off the coach. The season is a quick 10 weeks long and the kids get plenty of exercise. Nothing compares to the experience a child gets when playing youth sports, especially flag football. The kids have a chance to meet new friends and have a great experience learning a new sport. Let’s not forget about the parents. Many long-term friendships have been forged between parents whose children played on the same teams. And the league is always on the lookout for great moms and dads to take on coaching positions. You don’t have to know X’s and O’s as much as you might think. A calm demeanor and a sense of fair play go much farther. The league’s goal has always been to think of their players first. Former board president Kevin Myers’ resounding phrase, “It’s all about the kids” still continues to be the board’s guiding principal today. Board members are continually trying to provide a safe and pleasant environment for the children of Parkland. Learning sportsmanship, leadership, and the importance of team work are values the league works hard to stress to the coaches and players. More information about the league can be found on the their web site at www.ParklandFlag.com

The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts: March 19–20, 2016
row with us at “The Kids in the Garden” booth within the CSFOA by Barnes and Noble both Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20 from 10am to 5 pm. The Garden Club of Coral Springs members will be teaching many hands-on garden related activities and the children will love doing “make and take.” The average American child is plopped in front of a TV screen, computer or video about 44 hours a week. That means fewer hours spent outdoors, exploring and feeling connected to nature. The cities of Coral and Parkland have an abundance of parks and nature sanctuaries for the entire family to enjoy in this beautiful South Florida weather. There are sport parks where kids can run and play and nature sanctuaries for the whole family to enjoy. There the children can experience the full scope of their senses by seeing, smelling, hearing and touching the flora and fauna that South Florida is waiting to share with them. Let them get dirty! Actually there is no need to even leave your own yard to enjoy nature. It is about taking advantage of gardening moments with your kids in your own backyard, front yard and patio. Most adults who garden began as a child. What could be more rewarding for children than to create their own Butterfly Garden? When choosing a location, remember that butterflies need food, water and a place to hide. They also need a good sunny spot in a safe area away from human activity to raise their young. Good plants to use are milkweed, salvia, fire bush, lantana, buddleia, pentas and herbs such as dill and parsley.
Involving your child in gardening is not only a great way to spend more time together; it is also a chance to learn more about each other. What a better way to spend time together than in the peace and quiet of your garden watching the “flying flowers.” The Garden Club of Coral Springs was founded in 1999 and has been very active in the community. Their goal is: Plant ~ Protect ~ Promote Beauty. Their mission statement is: To share our love of gardening with our piers and with our youth. At EarthFest, held each April, The Garden Club members demonstrate Butterfly Gardening. They have assisted children create butterfly gardens, herb gardens and vegetable gardens in Coral Springs schools, assisted in the start of the city community garden, landscape Habit for Humanity homes in Broward County and are active with the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce. Each May the garden club partners join the City of Coral Springs to award property owners who, through their landscape design and maintenance, help to make Coral Springs beautiful. The Garden Club of Coral Springs is an all-volunteer non-profit organization. The monthly meetings feature speakers on horticultural and environmental subjects and field trips to botanical gardens, nurseries and nature parks. At the May luncheon, Environmental Scholarships are presented to 2 deserving High Schools Graduates. olitics—politics—politics. Students in all Broward County Schools will be involved in learning about citizenship and voting. Kids voting Broward, Inc. is working with all the schools in Broward to provide current information on election rules, regulations and dates. The website, www.kidsvotingbroward.org, is active and up to date. In the coming months, we’ll be providing lists of candidates, candidate forums, and ballot information ending with online voting for students, K-12, for all three 2016 Elections. The Presidential Preference Primary in Florida is March 15, 2016. Because Florida is a closed primary state, a voter must be enrolled in either the Republican or Democratic Party by February 16, 2016 in order to vote on one of the ballots. The candidate selected for each party will be supported
by the Florida delegation on the first ballot at the Party Convention in July. The Republican Convention will begin in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18, 2016 and the Democratic Convention will begin in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 25, 2016. Registered voters have 3 ways to vote: 1. Early Voting days, including the Sunday before Election Day, at any Early Voting Site in the County. 2. Vote by Mail ballots are available by calling (954) 357-7055 or on the website, www.browardsoe.org. They may be mailed to the location of your choice, but they must be received by the Supervisor of Elections office by Election Day, March 15. This year, for the first time, the return postage will be paid. 3. Election Day. Voters may cast a ballot at their assigned polling place, between 7 am and 7 pm. Students will have the unique opportunity to vote in both party primaries on the Kids Voting website using their Student ID. We urge parents to check with your child’s teacher in support of Kids Voting. Or go to the website yourself for fun activities. Discuss the issues with your child. Your child’s future is at stake. Please contact Kids Voting with any questions. Visit our website at www.kidsvotingbroward.org or send email inquiries to vote@kidsvotingbroward.org.

Parenting Rules! By Dr. David Yudell and Dr. Stacey McCaffrey
During each issue I request that readers reach out to me with questions
or suggestions. A father that I highly respect sent me an email last week pointing me in the direction of an article on parenting. Specifically it discussed the trend in recent generations to speak to our children as if they were adults. The article uses food and eating as the first example and isolates situations in which parents are asking their children in attempts to change their behavior. The question that is raised is, “what is the best way to get my child to listen?” Most of us know inherently not to yell at our children, but the frustrations of their choices and actions often get the best of us. So what is a parent to do? Here are some rules of thumb that can be applied in all situations. BE CONCISE: Children will tune out their parents as a lesson turns into a lecture. Let them know what they did that was wrong, what you want them to do in the future, and any consequences to be expected from their actions. Then stop yourself from continuing. BE DISCRETE: A child should be corrected for their behaviors. Drawing too much attention (scolding in the presence of others, raising your voice to
the point where others pay notice, etc.) changes the focus of the reprimand. Bring your child as quickly as possible to a private location and then follow the previous rule (concise). BE CONSISTENT: This may be the most important rule. If you enforce a behavior once and then skip the next two times, you will lose all of the progress you made. ALWAYS practice consistency. BE FAIR: We all know the saying, “ the punishment should fit the crime.” The question is, how do we apply that to parenting? The answer is to think through the elements of their mistake, give yourself time to let your emotions calm down, and then apply the consequence. I often use the word consequence because it does not have to be a punishment. A loss of a privilege or corrective behavior may be more appropriate. Taking a pause to think it through may provide the clarity you need. I hope the above rules provide you some assistance in helping your children reach their potential AND reduce some parenting stress along the way. I invite you to reach out to me with questions or with future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

hildren + sports = a winning combination. Regular exercise provided through sports can help children develop strong bones, control weight, decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, improve sleep, academically motivate and build self-confidence. Playing sports also can be fun, but it may sometimes have a downside. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2.6 million children ages 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports and recreation-related injuries. Some of the most common sports-related injuries are sprains and strains. Children also can experience growth plate and repetitive motion injuries as well as heat-related illnesses. Injuries can be either traumatic, such as a broken bone caused by a single application of force, or chronic, which result from repetitive training over a period of time. Injuries can occur for a number of reasons, including accidents, improper training or lack of appropriate gear. Age-appropriate Sports Unstructured free play that helps toddlers and preschoolers develop important motor skills is best, such as tumbling, running, throwing, catching, and swimming. As their coordination and attention spans improve, children ages 6 to 9 can begin participating in organized sports, such as soccer, gymnastics, T-ball, swimming, tennis, or martial arts. By age 10 to 12, children are typically ready to take on complex skill sports, such as basketball, hockey, and volleyball. Before allowing your child to participate in a contact sport, consider his or her age, maturity, and physical size. Some sports injuries are inevitable, but parents can take steps to minimize risk while encouraging their children to participate in regular physical activity.
• Children should have a physical examination before beginning an exercise program or training. • Gradually increase the time and intensity of workouts to avoid injuries related to overuse. • Choose activities appropriate for the child’s developmental level. • Teach children how to follow the rules of the game. • Provide the necessary gear that protects, fits properly and is appropriate for the sport. • Make sure every exercise routine has a warm-up and cool-down period. • Provide plenty of water or sports drink while playing to ensure proper hydration. • Use sunscreen to reduce the risk of skin cancer that can occur later in life. • Do not allow children to play when they are very tired or in pain. If an injury does occur, seek professional medical treatment when necessary. Make sure the injury heals completely before playing again. Start playing slowly and protect the injured area with a brace or special equipment. Parents should help their children select sports that match their personalities and fitness levels so they will want to practice more and improve their abilities. This physical competence can, in turn, help build both confidence and self-esteem. For more information about childhood sports injuries, talk with your doctor or call (866) 904-9262 for a free referral to a physician near you. HEALTHY MOUTH, HEALTHY BODY A
s parents, we all know that a balanced, nutritious diet is essential for your child to live a healthy lifestyle. But did you know that eating patterns and food choices play an important role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease as well? We may eat with their eyes first, but our mouth, teeth, and gums are more than just tools for eating. They’re essential for the first steps in the digestion process – chewing and swallowing! The mouth is your body’s initial point of contact with the nutrients you consume. So what you feed your child impacts not only their general health but also that of their teeth and gums. In fact, if their nutrition is poor, the first signs often show up in their oral health. While kids may not go for the raw broccoli and plain celery sticks, there are plenty of tasty snacks you can prepare for hungry, healthy mouths. Take the time to teach your little one what foods fight tooth decay and encourage them to enjoy healthier options. Eating a variety of foods is the way to go for good dental health, according to the American Dental Association. Low-fat dairy foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy protein sources such as seeds, nuts, legumes and lean meats are all part of a balanced diet that can support healthy teeth and gums. The following are all healthy snack ideas for kids. These treats supply vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that little mouths need, and they have the delicious FLAVORS THAT KIDS WILL ENJOY: • Low-fat yogurt with berries • Sliced, fresh watermelon • Crunchy veggies with dip • Celery sticks spread with cream cheese and sunflower seeds • Cheddar cheese and apples
• Unsalted almonds and coconut flakes • Hummus with toasted whole grain pita triangles Did you know that tooth decay is nearly 100% preventable? At American Pediatric Dental Group, we emphasize prevention of tooth decay at every dental visit and in the community! During the month of February, our team gives back their time by educating the youth at various schools in the area to educate children with proper techniques on how to brush, healthy food choices, and why baby teeth are just as important as your adult teeth. We encourage you to make brushing fun with your child by incorporating a timer, character toothbrush, and acting like a kid! Flossing is just as important as brushing; it gets the food out from in between the teeth! Remember to brush twice daily, floss daily, and visit your friendly pediatric dentist twice a year!

s part of Stoneman Douglas DECA’s chapter project, “I am Enough,” students gave back to the community and learned the importance of gratitude and the positive effect that it can have on your life. On Friday, December 11, the chapter project hosted a peanut butter and jelly-making event after school that involved over 80 students, who made 965 sandwiches for those in need. Students made 965 sandwiches for the homeless in an effort to see the positive effects that come from helping others. The event was inspired by the words of the well-known public speaker, Scott Fried, who spoke with Stoneman Douglas students and expressed ideas concerning living with contradiction, the importance of gratitude in all things, learning how to overcome the odds, and how self-esteem is brought about by doing estimable acts to over 1300 students. When asked how he remains humble despite his struggle with HIV/Aids, he responded that he enjoys volunteering his time to others and helping those that are less fortunate in order to gain a greater appreciation for life. This response inspired us to host an event in which students made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to create a positive impact on the community. The bread was donated courtesy of Cutler Rader, PL and DECA, and over 200 jars of both peanut butter and jelly were collected from DECA, NHS, and Key Club students. Originally, we had anticipated making around 300 sandwiches, but the eager students showed a desire to continue after reaching their initial goal. After making extra runs to the store for more bread, students successfully made 965 sandwiches. The sandwiches were donated to both LifeNet4Families and the Broward Outreach Center to very grateful recipients. To add to this positive momentum, students were encouraged to go to Barkland Dog Park on Sunday morning to relieve stress due to the studies done by Harvard that show the positive impact that dogs can have to relieve stress and anxiety. At Barkland, members spoke with people about our project and took pictures with
people and their dogs with custom frames to use for our social media campaigns. The positive reaction from both kids and adults was inspiring. The goal of “I am Enough” is to educate chapter, school and community members to accept our differences and appreciate the qualities that make us unique. They are hosting several events in addition to the sandwich-making day to promote positive energy and the sharing of student’s stories. In the present generation, students are no longer defined by their character, but rather by numerical figures, such as their GPA and SAT scores. It is important that today’s youth is driven to reach their personal goals as compared to living up to the expectations of others. Marjory Stoneman Douglas DECA is the largest club at MSD and is the eighth largest chapter in the world with over 500 members. All students in Hospitality, Marketing and Academy of Finance classes have the opportunity to become members of DECA, a worldwide student organization.
Westglades Middle School Participates for the First Time in Speech & Debate Initiatives By Andy Aronofsky and Robin Berard, Westglades Middle School Debate Teachers
W
estglades Middle School is participating for the first time in the Broward County Speech and Debate Initiative. At this time, roughly 30 middle schools are participating in this initiative. The long-term plan is for all Broward County Middle schools to participate in this initiative by the 2016-2017 school year. Students who are involved in this initiative take Speech and Debate as an elective class and are required to attend and compete in four competitions with other schools during the school year. In addition, there is a Middle School Championship and a daylong competition in May. During all of these competitions, students earn points that are imputed into a national database that ranks the students nation wide in the events that they participate in. When the middle school students earn 10 points through participation in the Debate events, they are entered into the National Forensic Honor Society. This class is a High School honors credit. WMS has offered Debate 1 this year, but next year will offer both Debate 1 and Debate 2. The benefits of participating in Speech and Debate are many. Statistics show students that participate in this rigorous curriculum have raised their Grade Point Averages and have scored higher on their college entrance exams. This class also gives students an
opportunity to speak in front of their peers and adult judges; therefore, they are becoming much more comfortable and confident in expressing themselves intelligently, a skill that will undoubtedly be useful in high school and in the workplace. In addition, Speech and Debate requires much practice in research and writing, which aligns perfectly with social studies and language arts goals in particular. Participation also requires that students be able to function independently and work proactively. Clearly, Speech and Debate is yet another exciting elective offered at Westglades Middle School. WMS students have worked diligently and performed very well at their first two Debate competitions, scoring medals in Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglass Debate, Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Declamation, Policy and Extemporaneous Debate. In our last competition, held December 10th, medals went to Bryan Hodojohnson, Marcus McCourt, Grant Cooper, Ari Wilson, Ashley Chai Onn, Charlize Cruger, Bailey Fuerman, Lexi Rubino, Cody Chin, Matt Heron, and Amy Krueger. Other students scored first and second places in their events. (To medal, a student must come in first, second, or third in total points out of the approximately 25 students competing in that event.) The Debate students really enjoy working hard to be the best and the thrill of competition.
SCHOOLS n December 5, 2015, Meagan Nagy, Drama Director at Ramblewood Middle School, chaperoned over 55 of her students to the District Level Junior International Thespian Society Festival at BAK Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. The Festival is a one-day competition featuring One Act Plays as well as Individual Events, such as solo singing and monologues.
Ramblewood had a very successful day! Their one act, “The Orphan Train,” received straight Superior ratings from the judges, earning it a slot at the State Competition on February 5th in Lake Mary, FL. In addition, the school’s Individual Events received 1 Critic’s Choice, 9 Superiors and 17 Excellents. Fourteen of the Individual Events have been selected to compete at the State level on February
6th. In total, 41 students will travel to the State Festival from Ramblewood Middle School. Ms. Nagy is in her first year at Ramblewood and is thrilled with her students’ success! “Directing the One Act and coaching all of the Individual Events gave me a chance to really see the level of talent and commitment at the school and I’m looking forward to coaching the students to the next level in preparation for their state performances,” Nagy said. “In addition, ‘The Orphan Train’ recounts an important piece of our history from 1914, when children from overrun orphanages in New York took a train ride west to other states to try to find permanent homes.”

ooking for some of the highest-achieving students in the county? Look no further than your neighborhood school. The kindergarten through fifth grade students who meet the criteria to be in the Junior Quantum Program at James S. Hunt Elementary meet the rigorous academic standards of the Junior Quantum Program at Forest Glen Middle. These students transition into the Quantum Program at Coral Springs High School where many earn scholarships to our nation’s most prestigious colleges. “These students are performing at the top of their class. This is an elite group of children who will end up being the leaders of tomorrow. I am excited to hear about their great accomplishments in the future!” says principal Ernie Lozano. Students in the Junior Quantum Program at James S. Hunt Elementary are performing above grade level in reading and math based on the Florida Standard Assessments. performing students. Students participate in hands-on activities and daily enrichment and are regular winners of contests run by the City of Coral Springs. The Junior Quantum Program works hard to foster the socialemotional side of learning as well. Students receive multiple opportunities to collaborate in groups and work together to solve real-world problems. These students leave our school prepared with the necessary tools to be college and career ready. If you feel your child is a great fit for this program and would like more information about the Junior Quantum Program at James S. Hunt Elementary, contact us at (754)-322-6500. “My child could not be happier in the Junior Quantum Program! As a parent, it is reassuring to see her so excited to learn and thriving in the warm, nurturing environment created by her teacher. It is a relief to know I do not have to worry about where my child should attend school.”

he year seems to come and go too quickly. During the month of December we had our annual Polar Express Day as well as our Field Day activities to end the 2015 year. The students truly enjoyed all of the fun! A big thanks to our PTA for providing all of the students with ice pops for field day and a special thanks to Coach Mann for organizing the event. Parkside students and staff have been busy during this third quarter of school preparing for the upcoming Florida State Assessment and our SchoolWide Academic Exhibition, which will be held in May. Even though we continue to focus on academics, we are doing several activities throughout the month of February to give back to others. At the beginning of the month, we will be having our annual Jump Rope for Heart event. The American Heart Association is a great organization that supports research on this disease, which affects so many. Students will have the opportunity to learn all about heart disease and a healthy lifestyle during their PE classes. During their
Jump-A-Thon, the students will be jumping rope for this cause. All donations we receive go directly to this association. Pennies for Patients is another cause we will be collecting for towards the end of the month. All donations go to benefit the Leukemia Association. It is important for us as a school to not only raise money to support our programs, but to teach our students the importance of helping others in need. Even though it seems far off, summer will be here before you know it. Families are always looking for great camps. Parkside was fortunate to host a camp last summer and did a great job keeping kids active and having fun all summer long. If you are looking for something for your kids to do this summer, check out their website at www.campflash.com. Sign up early and receive discounts and you can pick the weeks you like. ur “No Place for Hate” activities have been a big success. The entire school population gathered on the blacktop for a group hug to show “we love our school.” A drone flew over and captured the event Our school is 21st century ready. We are now digital 3, 4, and 5. This means that every student in these grades received a laptop to use for the school year. The teachers are working hard on developing our global digital students for college and career readiness. Additionally, our primary grades are using Ipads and MacBooks in their classrooms and every teacher in the school has a Smartboard in their room to promote an interactive learning environment. Back by popular demand, our second round of afterschool ELOP (Extended Learning Opportunities Program) clubs will begin again in February. Past clubs have been Coding, Robotics, Dance, Sports and much more. Our P.A.W.S. positive behavior program has proven to be a success. Students receive “Spirit Sticks” when they demonstrate a positive action or succeed academically. They are competing to see who can collect the most. This December some of our 5th Grade students flew to our
nation’s capitol and spent three days experiencing the many memorials, museums and sites. The first day, the students visited the home of our first president, George Washington at Mt. Vernon, VA. They then drove into DC to view the three most important documents of our history: The Bill of Rights, The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The day concluded with a visit to The National Museum of Natural History and viewing the MLK Memorial and the FDR Memorial lit up at night. Since it was the holiday season, the National Christmas Tree and Chanukah Menorah were lit as well. The next two days were filled with visits to Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Air and Space Museum, the Holocaust Memorial, and the Lincoln, Jefferson, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials. Two highlights of the trip were the elevator ride to the 550-foot level of the Washington Monument and the tour of the Capitol Building. All travelers enjoyed a wonderful experience that will be remembered always. Please continue to keep up with our events and activities on social media. THE SEASON OF GIVING AND RECEIVING AT RAMBLEWOOD! F
irst Graders at Ramblewood Elementary really were inspired to be a part of a “Season of Giving.” Student’s hand made Snowmen with secret letters, as well as Gingerbread Men and donated them to local Nursing Homes. Mrs. Spaw stated, “Some of the Gingerbread Men also escaped out of the first grade classrooms (with the help of some sneaky first graders) into the third grade.” Third graders were overjoyed with the surprise of their very own gingerbread men. In addition, Ramblewood also participated in a schoolwide toy collection for Kids of Love. The toys went to children that have cancer or another debilitating disease. The school collected four large boxes. On Wednesday, December 16th, members of the Ramblewood Elementary 5th grade Chorus helped their school and community get into the holiday spirit with their production of “Jingle Bell Jukebox,” directed by Mrs. Morishita. Students, decked out in their 1950’s finest, gave a new spin to some traditional holiday favorites such as “Sleigh Ride,” “It’s the Most
Wonderful Time of the Year,” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” There were even some surprises as The Grinch and Elvis Claus made special appearances. For the fourth year in a row, the multi-talented students at Ramblewood Elementary from Mrs. Bachmann’s 4th and 5th grade Art Club have taken best in Show, the top award for the Group Entry in the Martin Luther King Visual Art competition at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Mrs. Bachmann’s Art Club created a life-size sculpture consisting of two standing children and one child seated in a wheel chair. The sculpture was made entirely from plastic wrap and clear packing tape. The students had fun wrapping and creating using plastic wrap and then covering it with several layers of tape until it resembled the finished sculpture. “It is always pure joy seeing the looks on their faces when they finally see the finished product,” said Mrs. Bachmann. The students worked hard and received their award at the Center’s ceremony on Thursday, January 14th.

Heron Heights Elementary ended 2015 by donating
over 500 gifts for the holidays to our sister school, Larkdale Elementary. Thank you to our wonderful PTO, parents, students and staff for making Snowflakes for Larkdale a huge success. We hope everyone had a beautiful holiday season and break! PTO will also be collecting coins for Relay for Life. Coins for a Cure will be collected February 8th–12th. If we raise $1000, Mr. King will kiss an animal. The animal will be revealed the morning of February 12th on the morning news. I wonder what animal he will kiss this year?
Our next McTeacher Night at McDonald’s will be on Wednesday, February 24th from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Come out and support HHE! 20% from all sales will be donated back to the school. McTeacher Night is held at the McDonald’s located at 5741 Coral Ridge Drive. We hope to see you there! If you haven’t had a chance to attend a PTO meeting yet, the next one will be on February 4th at 9:15am. Remember, students have an Early Release Day on Thursday, February 25th. Make sure to check our website frequently for upcoming events and notices.

s we move into the second half of the 2015-16 school year, we have a lot to look forward to and we can also look back at past successes. Let’s start by recognizing our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Judy Phalen! Mrs. Phalen has worked at Country Hills for many years as the Media Specialist. She retires in June. Our School Related Employee of the Year is Mrs. Sylvia Goett. Mrs. Goett is our Bookkeeper who has worked for many years here at CHE as well. She is very knowledgeable and always willing to help students, staff, and parents. We are lucky to have both of them at our school. Our students and teachers are heavily involved in the curriculum at each grade level. As we prepare for the state assessments, rigor and relevance are apparent in every classroom. Students are involved in long-term and short-term projects reflecting the standards. One of the long-term projects that some of our students have been involved in is the International Heritage Project. Our 5th graders were involved in researching their heritage. This celebration is a time for the students to share and get to know more about diverse families, cultures

tudents, teachers and parents enjoyed some friendly competition over the last few weeks. The Imagine Intramural Sports Program was held in mid-January and featured basketball, flag football, cheerleading, volleyball and street hockey. Practices were held twice weekly for each sport. Middle School teacher, Mr. William Witcher oversaw the Intramural Sports Program this year. The Annual Science Fair is open to students in grades 4 through 8. Students can choose from two tracks for their projects – competing and non-competing. The students worked extremely hard on their projects from the beginning of the school year and were excited to present their findings. The school-wide Science Fair took place January 14th and 15th and the first and second place winners moved on to the Imagine Regional Science Fair vying to progress to the Imagine Statewide Science Fair held in Orlando later in the year. Spearheading the science fair once again is science teacher Mr. Brett Mrakovich. We are very proud of our very own Middle School Math Teacher, Debra Darling, who was voted Teacher of the Year. A well-deserved honor, Ms. Darling was selected by her colleagues to represent Imagine School at Broward as she competes against teachers from other area Imagine Schools.
and traditions. The students created digital presentations that included background information, artifacts, foods, music, pictures, and facts. The culminating activity involved students and parents preparing a “signature” holiday dish for the International Feast. Students enjoyed eating different dishes reflecting the rich diversity of our school. Our parents were heavily involved in the project as well. We are also excited to announce the date for our Kindergarten Orientation. The informative parent session will be held on Wednesday, February 17 at 9:00 am and 6:30 pm here at Country Hills Elementary. You will need only to attend one session. We will share information about a typical day in kindergarten, curriculum, literacy, PTA, school supplies, uniforms, the screening process, and much more. If you have a child who is kindergarten ready, please join us for one of the orientation sessions. The Multiage Informational Orientation is scheduled for Thursday, March 3 at 6:30 pm. Our tour dates are March 2, April 1, and May 10 all starting at 9:00 am. We look forward to seeing you!

In December, the Middle School Drama students and Chorus, under the direction of Ms. Arielle Yunker and Ms. Chelle Fortner, put on stellar performances in The Wizard of Oz. The show was a huge success, and the children did a fabulous job. They will present another production later on in the school year. Additionally, 4th and 5th Graders put on a spectacular holiday showcase before the Winter Break. In addition, Imagine School at Broward was recognized in a National Scholastic Magazine for Best Ideas. There are thousands of Book Fairs and our photos were chosen 3 years in a row to represent our school with a paper sent in by Linda Rosen our wonderful Media Specialist and Book Fair Chairperson. Ms. Rosen says, “I’m really excited and proud of our school. We reached our highest sales ever at our Fall Book Fair last year and plan on topping it this year at our ‘Peace, Love and Books’ Fair on February 8–12.” This New Year is shaping up nicely and in full swing at Imagine School at Broward. For more information about the school or to learn how to register for the upcoming 2016–2017 lottery for placement in VPK and grades K–8, please call the school office at (954) 255-0020 or visit www.imaginebroward.org.

Submitted by Broward County Schools
Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates
Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for being selected as Florida’s 2016 Superintendent of the Year by the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS). Superintendent Runcie received the honor Wednesday, December 2, 2015, during a joint meeting of FADSS and the Florida School Boards Association in Tampa. Runcie was appointed BCPS Superintendent in October 2011, and is now entering his fifth year leading the sixth largest public school system in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida. During his tenure as BCPS Superintendent, Runcie was instrumental in spearheading community support for an $800 million General Obligation Bond in November 2014, which passed with 74 percent voter approval. This additional revenue source provides BCPS with needed funding for safety and modernization of schools, as well as updated technology, as part of its SMART (Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology) initiative. Additional BCPS education initiatives under Runcie’s leadership include: • Becoming a national model for rethinking school discipline through its intervention strategy called PROMISE, which is creating positive outcomes for BCPS students and the community. • Implementing innovative programs and engaging learning opportunities for all students including scholastic chess for all 2nd and 3rd grade students; the largest debate program in the
nation – in all high schools and expanding in middles schools; computer science courses in all high schools; and expanding dual language programs and investing in music and the arts. • Continuously improving management of BCPS business operations to deliver significant savings for reinvestment in BCPS students, teachers and schools. “Bob Runcie is an outstanding superintendent with a single focus and commitment to student success,” states FADSS President and Orange County Superintendent Barbara Jenkins. “His instructional and operational expertise provide purposeful direction to one of the nation’s largest urban school districts. Highly respected by his colleagues, Bob well represents the educational leaders of Florida,” adds Jenkins. “Bob is not only an exceptional superintendent with a proven track record of success; he is a true servant leader committed to educational excellence,” states FADSS Chief Executive Officer and Florida Senator Bill Montford. “He is an asset to the association and his leadership is valued by his colleagues throughout the state, in large part due to his ability to recognize the significant challenges statewide regardless of district size,” adds Montford. The process for electing Florida’s Superintendent of the Year was established by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), a national organization of school superintendents and other educational leaders. In February 2016, Runcie will represent all Florida superintendents at the AASA’s National Education Conference in Phoenix, Arizona where he will be recognized and honored for his public education service in Florida.

s part of Stoneman Douglas DECA’s chapter project Making Change, there was a “Shark Tank” event held at Stoneman Douglas’s auditorium on November 17th at 5:00pm. In this simulation, DECA students had the chance to “pitch” their products to a panel of judges—the “sharks.” They reviewed their ideas and provided feedback on their presentations as they played the role of loan officers and venture capitalists. All community members and media representatives were invited. The Making Change chapter project is competing in DECA’s Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan competition category this March in Orlando, Florida. The project’s goal is to educate the chapter, school, and community members about the skills needed and the opportunities available in order to become an entrepreneur. The chapter is hosting several events in addition to “Shark Tank” to promote communication,
financial and marketing skills. These skills are essential in order to be a successful entrepreneur. Their promotion also extends to social media. Making Change can be found on Facebook as: MSD Making Change and Twitter: @msdmakingchange. DECA is a career and technical student organization composed of more than 200,000 students who are interested in careers in marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality or management. DECA enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction and that apply learning, connect to business and promote competition. DECA student members leverage their DECA experience to become academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders. Outta High School, I know about more opportunities and I am so glad I went!” Representatives from different agencies were glad to participate because they are interested in hiring qualified students into their business or industry. Speaker Adam Gurewicz, a Realtor with Remax Advisors said, “Students should be aware that there are options besides getting a four-year college degree that can lead to successful careers.” He was among 13 industry and technical school representatives who spoke to students about emerging careers and training programs to prepare them for these careers. The project was intended to attract the attention of students who may not be college-bound or are unsure of what they may do immediately after high school. A large percentage of students at Taravella, and across the nation, lack the grades and motivation needed to pursue a four-year degree; and with no set career path to follow, they find themselves hesitating after graduation. At the same time, there are many companies who would gladly hire these students if they possessed the necessary skills. The result is a skills gap between unemployed adults and companies needing skilled employees. DECA students first learned about the concept of a skills gap from a speech given by First Lady Michelle Obama. The skills gap is affecting our national economy as many people lack the skills and education needed to fill open and necessary jobs. This is where Career and Technical Education (CTE) can really make a difference, because even though these jobs don’t require a college education, they do demand training. DECA is an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. J.P. Taravella has a chapter of 340 marketing and finance students as part of a 200,000 international organization.

J.P. Taravella DECA hosted a school-wide event to inspire juniors and seniors to consider a variety of emerging career options that will enable them to earn a good living that doesn’t necessitate attending college. Over 72% of the teen audience said they were more certain of their post-high school plans after attending the event, which explained what a living wage is, introduced them to emerging, high-demand, respectable paying jobs, and showed them where they can receive training for these positions in our local community. To kick off the daylong event, students first discovered how much they must earn to live comfortably in South Florida. They heard a number of presentations from business leaders who exposed them to emerging career options that they may never have heard of before. These included representatives from the building trades, financial services, high tech and automotive industries. Following these presentations, students learned about training options from the three Broward Technical Colleges – Atlantic, McFatter and Sheridan – as well as from CareerSource Broward, who explained how students can get financial support for a variety of training programs. Finally, students interacted one-on-one with the guest speakers who set up exhibits to help students plan for their future careers. Many students were inspired by the event. Chelsea Castillo, a senior at J.P. Taravella, said, “Being a senior is a lot of pressure. It was a relief to know that I do not have to spend so much money on college.” Said junior Kerstin Heiner, “It was an excellent eye-opener. There are so many chances out there and students have no idea, and I include myself. After attending Straight
