Sports & Activities Directory Pines 2114 N. Flamingo Rd. #1269 Pembroke Pines, FL 33028 (305) 989-9380

www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

As we begin a new school year, I hope you had a fun summer and had some family time to relax, enjoy, and make new memories. Now it’s back to the hustle and bustle of school, schedules, and routines. I hope your child is ready for all their new and exciting experiences that will come with this new school year.

We are tremendously excited to welcome Gabriela Martinez to our Sports & Activities Directory team. A senior at Pines Charter High School, Gabriela is our new contributing photographer. She made her debut with her Water Polo shot on the cover of our last issue, and we look forward to having her wonderful pictures continue to grace our pages. If you see her out and about please say hi. As always, make sure to check out our Events Section so you’re up to date on all that’s happening in the months of September & October. The city puts on so many cool events. For example, in September there is the Touch-A-Truck Vehicle Expo. During this event, kids can get close and personal with all the emergency response vehicles, heavy machinery, motorcycles and other vehicles. They will have a blast! Then in October there is Boo-ville, a safe way for families to Trick-or-Treat. Finally, although I usually like to keep my letters positive, this quarter I’d like to touch on a serious matter. Did you know that Florida led the nation in child drowning deaths in 2023? From oceans to pools and lakes, we are constantly surrounded by water in Florida. That’s why water safety and swimming skills are so important for every child. In the Directory Section (Red Tab) of the magazine, look under Swimming and you will find places like The Big Blue Swim School or the American Red Cross, where your child can learn these potentially lifesaving skills. I also want to highlight one of the many fantastic programs that our city offers its residents. The Pembroke Pines Fire Department will come to your home and install a FREE alarm on your pool gate, so you can monitor if your child is in the pool unsupervised. All you need to do is look at their ad on page 5, scan the QR Code and register. This is a NO COST program, so I encourage every family in Pembroke Pines with a pool gate to take advantage of this opportunity. Thank you to our city officials for this wonderful, potentially lifesaving program.

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Friends,

My Townhall meetings over the past several months were well received and well attended. We collected hundreds of great ideas for a better city. We will spend the next months using the resident guidance collected to produce a strategic plan to City Commission adoption. This plan will take our city forward into a brighter future. I look forward to this resident driven plan and I can’t wait to get those initiatives started. I will schedule additional Townhall meetings to review the plan with you so we can progress together.

Please remember that we are still in hurricane season and are quickly approaching our most active time of the year. I hope everyone has their hurricane plans in place and is taking steps to prepare. This also includes pruning trees and landscaping now before a storm is on our doorstep. Be sure to visit our hurricane preparedness information at www.ppines.com/hurricane to help you in your preparations. There are helpful tips, informational videos, resources etc. covering every aspect of making sure we are storm safe.

Our students will be returning to school this month after their summer break. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at cross walks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.

Very Sincerely Yours,

Pembroke Pines is beaming with pride as one of its youngest residents, Rayford Shipman IV, has achieved an extraordinary feat at the AAU Track and Field National Championships. At just seven years old, Rayford not only set a new national record in the 100-meter dash but also clinched a gold medal in the 400-meter dash. This first-grade student at Pembroke Lakes Elementary has captured the hearts of many with his remarkable talent and dedication.

Competing in the prestigious AAU National Championship Games, Rayford showcased his exceptional speed and athleticism in the 100-meter dash, clocking in a record-breaking time that has set a new benchmark for his age group. His performance in the 400-meter dash was equally impressive, as he crossed the finish line ahead of his competitors, earning another gold medal for his growing collection.

“I am so excited that I won two gold medals,” Rayford shared with a beaming smile. “I worked really hard with my dad and Coach Green, and it feels amazing to see all that hard work pay off.” His dedication to his training regimen and the support from his father, Rayford Shipman, and his track coach, Coach Green, have been instrumental in his success.

Rayford’s journey to this national achievement has been marked by rigorous training and an unwavering passion for track and field. His commitment to excellence is evident in his daily routine, where he balances his schoolwork at Pembroke Pines Elementary with his training sessions. His father, a former athlete himself, has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance, helping Rayford hone his skills and develop a disciplined approach to the sport.

When asked about his favorite track athlete, Rayford’s eyes light up. “Noah Lyles is my favorite! I want to be just like him,” he said, referring to the world-renowned sprinter known for his incredible speed and charismatic personality. With such high aspirations and a clear role model, Rayford is set on a path that could see him achieving even greater heights in the future.

The Pembroke Pines community is thrilled to celebrate Rayford’s accomplishments, recognizing the hard work and dedication that have brought him to this point. His achievements serve as an inspiration to other young athletes in the area, proving that with determination, support, and a passion for excellence, anything is possible.

As Rayford continues to train and compete, there is no doubt that this young athlete will keep making headlines and setting new records. Pembroke Pines proudly stands behind Rayford Shipman IV, cheering him on every step of the way.

S tep into the world of early childhood education excellence with Elizabeth Gonzalez, the Founder and Owner of A World of Knowledge Learning Center. For over two decades, this outstanding learning center has illuminated the path to lifelong learning. Catering to children ages 1 though 6, it stands as a cornerstone of the community, celebrating 20 years of excellence in early childhood education.

Earlier this year, the 20 year celebration brought together the original staff from 2004, the school’s very first student, alumni spanning two decades, and dedicated teachers who helped shape over 3,200 young children, as they embarked in their educational journey. Alumni shared their academic accomplishments and parents shared their gratitude to the academic foundation their children received at A World of Knowledge.

Under the guidance of Elizabeth Gonzalez, the school’s unique curriculum transcends boundaries, bringing the world to the students through music and

play, making learning both interactive and enjoyable. The passionate staff at A World of Knowledge infuses a curriculum created for the students which embraces multiculturalism. The curriculum empowers young learners to grasp concepts beyond their years.

A World of Knowledge was a pioneer in offering Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program (VPK) to over 144 students in their inaugural year and the school became a model school for the district and the state, placing A World of Knowledge among Florida’s top five early learning centers. T he Humanity Project is a nationally known 19-year-old nonprofit based in Broward County. For the past three years, this respected organization has worked with student leaders at another highly regarded institution: Pembroke Pines-Florida State University Charter Elementary School. Through the Humanity Project’s program called “Humanity Club,” fifth grade children spend an entire school year learning the values of self-worth, equality and respect for all – then pass along that knowledge to their fellow students.

These sharing efforts have included building an outdoor Humanity Garden at the school, creating uplifting artworks for school hallways, performing original short skits and mentoring younger students. Recently the current 13-member Humanity Club devoted their afterschool meeting to teaching a group of Pembroke Pines-Florida State University Charter Elementary Kindergarten students what respect really means. The younger children loved it.

The session began with Humanity Club members leading a deep breathing exercise followed by a group recitation of three important words: “I am somebody!” Every Humanity Club session starts in this way throughout the year and the fifth graders enjoyed sharing the lesson they have learned. Next up was a skit performed to an original Humanity Project fable called, “The Tale of the Very Big, Very Bad Bee.” In the story, the angry bee is helped by other nearby garden neighbors to avoid bullying a little boy – all ending in an unmistakable moral about bystanders as antibullying helpers. Questions and answers followed to ensure the Kindergarteners got the key

message. Quite clearly, they did.

The Humanity Club members then broke into small groups to talk with the young students individually, reinforcing the antibullying theme but also discussing school life in ways that supported and encouraged the kindergarten children.

Dr. Lisa Sporillo, the principal at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary, has been a consistent and strong supporter of the Humanity Club program at her school. She has found that it teaches fundamental values not only to the club members but also to many other students throughout Pembroke Pines-Florida State University Charter Elementary School. Student leaders must pass an application process to become part of the Humanity Club, with the program led by teacher Piper Spencer – a Board Director of the Humanity Project. Mrs. Spencer has led this club for the past few years and has truly made a difference by empowering students to support others and the community. Mrs. Spencer works closely with the Humanity Project founder and president, Bob Knotts, who also attends each session to work with the students.

The Humanity Project’s acclaimed Humanity Club program began in 2012 and has been given successfully to students at many Broward schools as well as to kids at county parks and libraries. The program is supported by funding from the Our Fund Foundation, the nonprofit Floatarama and Children’s Services Council of Broward County among other sponsors. Humanity Club is a completely free program and is available to bring to other schools.
