CORAL SPRINGS PARKLAND

SPORTS & ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY (954) 803-2140 Office 1118 SW 7th Street

Boca Raton, FL 33486 www.sportsandactivities.com

Dear Readers,

Welcome Back to School! We hope everyone had a great summer and is feeling refreshed and ready for a new school year. Maybe your child has discovered a new interest or developed a talent or love for a new sport they experienced over the summer. It’s a new season for sports registrations, enrichment programs and extracurricular activities and they can all be found in the red-tabbed pages that lie ahead in our Main Directory.

As we look forward to some cooler weather, you’ll find many fun, familyfriendly events that our cities have lined up for us in the calendar located in our Events Directory. From the Parkland Dash, & Splash Bash to Chess with the Mayor and Halloween events, there are plenty of things happing in your city for you and your family to enjoy together this season. We hope you’ll come out to socialize with your friends and neighbors and we hope to see you there, too!

If you’re looking for sports physicals, family-practitioners, pediatricians, physical therapy, mental health services, urgent care and more, you’ll find it all in our Heath Section. We provide a great resource guide for all of your family’s healthcare needs.

Be sure to page through our School Directory where we feature School Information about all the public schools in Coral Springs & Parkland every Fall. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work. We continue to lead the way with the exciting educational programming & curriculums each school has to offer. What our students are learning and participating in is truly outstanding. Please remember to let our advertisers know you found them in Sports & Activities Directory. Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. We appreciate you, our readers, we can’t do what we do without you!

My best to you,

Dear Parkland Residents,

Whether you are a grade school student, returning to college, preparing to attend a new school, or a parent of all of the above, now is the time to shift from summer mode to the more structured habits and routines that will set you up for success.

As you prepare for the new school year, get into a mindset that will allow you to always continue to learn and grow. In many cases, the attitudes we adopt as we enter the new school year will help set the tone for our experiences throughout the rest of the year.

For example, take a moment to think about the magnitude of the preparation involved in getting our schools up and running for a new school year this fall. Remember to show respect and appreciation to teachers, school administrators, and classmates. When we make a point to focus during class, complete assignments on time, and follow school rules, we are demonstrating that we are committed to our education and value the people who make up our school community.

Setting goals before school starts is also a great way to establish markers for academic and personal growth. Think about ways you can hold yourself accountable for maintaining or improving your grades. You could also consider joining a club or sports team, or volunteering in the community.

Here are a few quick pointers for setting goals before the start of school:

• Get in touch with a friend before school starts, so that you have a point of connection.

• Eat a healthy diet.

• Start going to sleep at a time that allows you to be well-rested for the school day.

• Establish a study space at home.

• If you aren’t using an alarm to wake up, consider using one now.

• Adopt overall habits that help you take care of yourself physically and mentally.

Make the most of the few weeks ahead to approach the new school year with positivity, determination, and kindness. If we strive to be kind and caring to those around us—especially those struggling with personal or academic challenges—we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and foster a sense of community within our schools that will last all year long.

Dear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses, I hope you have enjoyed your summer break! I sure have as I have almost completed my travel throughout our wonderful State as the President of the Florida League of Mayors addressing mental wellness and veterans’ issues with many other Mayors. My other priority during my year of service has been mentoring. I chose these three topics as I think they interrelate to lifting any and all communities.

Aside from my role as Mayor, I have led a mentoring program for 21 years called Project Leadership. If you would like to learn more about it, please email Bella at Bella@scottjbrookpa.com. It’s a free program for middle and high school students to learn leadership, communication and stress management skills, amongst others. Thank you Jolie Lehrman for being such an incredible leader for years. The idea of the program came from a 12-year old resident many years ago named Ian Harris.

I think one of the best lessons we can teach our youth is to be assertive and learn to vocalize their boundaries. This past summer, I hosted and mentored 11 summer interns for my family law firm. Several of them expressed how much they learned to improve their communication skills and expand their comfort zone. The City also has many volunteer opportunities. Please check out our website at www.Coralsprings. gov. You can also email Luwam Ghermay, my Executive Assistant at City Hall, if your child would like to serve as Mayor For The Day or shadow me. You can reach her LGhermay@coralsprings.gov.

I want to thank this awesome community for your faith in re-electing me for a sixth term in office! It is such an honor to serve with such an excellent, caring and professional City Commission and such excellent employees and leaders throughout our organization.

Congrats to all of the Schools in Coral Springs who are rated A and/or improved their score in the last school year. I know my wife and I have chosen to raise all five of our children here in great part to the excellent education provided throughout our City. Please know our City is committed to work with all of the public schools to do whatever we can to make our children’s experience a good one. I am also very proud of our Charter School who continues to attain the A rating and succeed in creating a great family atmosphere for our students.

If you need me for anything or have ideas to make our City better, feel free to email me at Sbrook@coralsprings. gov or call my cell at 954-494-9872. Please follow me on Social media at CSCOmmissioner1 Thank you for taking the time to read this. Our Commission meets the first and third Wednesday of every month, usually at 6:30 pm. Its open to the public and we would love to see you!

Warmly, Your Friendly Mayor,

Much has been said and discussed about the stock market being a casino, and in some ways, this comparison holds true. For instance, if one tries to get rich quickly, it recalls the old adage, One can never be so wrong as when one thinks they are right.

So, with that said, let’s talk gambling!

Imagine walking into a casino where people are placing bets cautiously around you. You notice something odd - most people are winning; they are making money on their bets. You ask around and discover that this casino has been paying out more to its bettors than they’ve put in for many decades.

But there’s a catch. (And there is always a catch.) In this casino, the most common losers are those who make short-term bets. The payoffs typically come from longerterm bets that play out over time.

In other words, this casino tests your patience, and if you pass, you make money - or at least you would have over the casino’s history.

Chances are, after this experience, you’d feel like you’d found the key to riches and want to go to this imaginary magical casino as often as possible. But you might be surprised to know that this casino actually exists. It isn’t located in Nevada or Atlantic City, or any of hundreds of Native American reservations. It’s our plain old boring stock market.

As you can see from the accompanying chart, there is a very good chance that somebody who put money into the market and left it there for a decade or more would

have come out with more than they put in, and in some cases, the ‘payoff’ is pretty dramatic. The odds go up if you put in money over time, the way many workers do when they save and invest for retirement.

There is, of course, a difference between an environment where the odds of winning games of chance are slightly less than 50%, and betting that companies will grow over time. Due to all their (collectively) millions of workers arriving at the office in the morning and working for eight hours to add value to the enterprise, companies tend to grow incrementally more valuable each day by imperceptible margins.

Treat your investment strategy with patience... and like coal, it needs to sit for a while before turning into the inevitable diamond.

The collective benefit of all that work shows up, eventually, through various ups and downs, in the growth of the stock price for most companies over most longer-term time periods, and the bettors (investors) are the beneficiaries.

Be well and invest wisely!

Another start to a new school year and is it already time to prepare for college? My child …

A) Just started high school.

B) Just started middle school.

C) Just finished kindergarten!

Maybe answer C is an exaggeration, but this question presents itself often when I am meeting with parents. College admissions and subsequent acceptation rates have become extremely competitive. That trend is not reversing.

As a child psychologist who interacts with schools from all grades, representing students with wide ranging ability levels, the following is a guide to help start your child’s school year off strong with an eye on their educational future

Elementary School: Let them have fun. Many parents provide programs for enrichment and/or enroll their children into highend private schools from the start of their education. A private school education cannot be looked down upon from almost every measurement. The recommendation here is to watch your child’s progress in school (public or private) and let them show you their path. If your child is showing an area that they are excelling in, supplement and enrich it. If they are showing an area of weakness, support it (extra help at school, one on one help with a parent or a tutor). If you are having strong emotions as a result of your child’s

difficulties, reach out for self help. If they are falling behind it is highly recommended to have them evaluated by a private child psychologist (the public school rarely catches the need). Teach them the habits they’ll need to be successful for .....

Middle School: Hold on! It does not always, but it can get rocky. Watch for emotional growth and maturity (or what appears to be immaturity). Support and guide. Do it again. Keep them on track academically. High school credits start presenting themselves. Help them to think those opportunities through. Support and guide (yes again! And do not forget about your own wellbeing). That should keep you busy until...

High School: Support and guide. If they are still showing a deficit at this point consult with a Child Psychologist who does evaluations (no, it is actually never too late). Let the high school guide you, but follow up with the school, provide recommended supports for the student and yourself! Start visiting schools early to get your student focused on college. There are countless supports available privately and through your school. Use them and let the process develop.

Regardless of you child’s age, enjoy each school year and help them grow as a person and a student. The rest will take care of itself.

As the temperatures in South Florida start to cool down slightly, the excitement for fall sports heats up. From football to soccer, and from cheerleading to cross country, the region comes alive with athletic activities. However, while these sports offer numerous benefits, they also come with certain risks. West Boca Medical Center is dedicated to ensuring that young athletes stay safe and healthy through the season. With our specialized pediatric emergency room and a free-standing ER in Coconut Creek, we are always prepared to handle sports-related injuries and emergencies.

Concussion Safety: Concussions are a significant concern in contact sports such as football and soccer. These injuries occur when a blow to the head or body causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of a concussion, which include headaches, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and balance problems. At West Boca Medical Center, our medical professionals emphasize the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here are some key safety tips for preventing and managing concussions:

• Wear Proper Gear: Ensure that helmets and other protective gear fit properly and are in good condition.

• Educate Players and Coaches: Everyone involved should be aware of the signs and symptoms of concussions.

• Follow Return-to-Play Guidelines: Athletes who have sustained a concussion should only return to sports after being cleared by a healthcare professional.

• Encourage Open Communication: Athletes should feel comfortable reporting any symptoms of a concussion immediately.

Bone and Joint Health: The rigors of fall sports can put a lot of strain on young

athletes’ bones and joints, making injuries like sprains, fractures, and overuse injuries common. To help prevent these issues, West Boca Medical Center offers the following advice:

• Proper Warm-Up and Cool-Down: A thorough warm-up and cool-down routine can help prepare the body for activity and aid in recovery.

• Strength Training: Building muscle strength can provide better support for bones and joints, reducing the risk of injury.

• Hydration and Nutrition: Staying hydrated and consuming a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can promote bone health.

• Rest and Recovery: Adequate rest is crucial to prevent overuse injuries. Encourage athletes to listen to their bodies and take breaks as needed.

Emergency Care: Despite the best preventative measures, injuries can still happen. That’s why West Boca Medical Center’s pediatric emergency room and our free-standing ER in Coconut Creek are invaluable resources. Our pediatric ER is specially designed to cater to the needs of young patients, with a child-friendly environment and staff trained in pediatric care. The Coconut Creek ER provides convenient access to emergency services, ensuring that timely care is always within reach.

In the event of a sports-related injury, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly. Our facilities are equipped to handle a wide range of injuries, from concussions to fractures, providing expert care and peace of mind for parents and athletes alike.

I am pleased to share some of the key accomplishments we’ve achieved during my first year, as well as outline some of my goals for the future.

SAT Prep Program: As part of our ongoing commitment to improving our schools and ensuring adequate educational resources for our teens, The City implemented a subsidized SAT preparation program for our area high schoolers which was met with huge success. The first session filled almost instantly! Students were able to take advantage of a six-hour workshop by one of our area experts and enjoy lunch for only $20! We are looking forward to continuing this effort in the years to come.

Parent and Principal Education Groups: Additionally, we continued to offer our Parent and Principal Education Group meetings, held bimonthly to connect Principals and PTA leaders with city officials. These meetings aim to facilitate an open dialogue of information sharing between the individuals who are “boots on the ground” at our schools and city leaders who influence municipal decision-making. In the coming months, we are planning to scale up our efforts in the coming year with the implementation of meaningful presentations and cohesive discussions to create a more enhanced experience for all involved.

Free Town Hall: In April, we partnered with Coral Springs High School and Broward County Public School’s Diversity and Equity department to organize a free Town Hall on the Dangers of Edibles. This Town Hall provided parents,

along with their students, the opportunity to learn more about what our teens are facing in today’s world, as well as an open forum to share experiences and discuss solutions. The event garnered the highest attendance of a BCPS town hall of its type with over 190+ individuals in attendance, as well as our School Board Representative, Mrs. Lori Alhadeff.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Every year in May schools and parents find creative and meaningful ways to express their gratitude for teachers as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. This year, we implemented the first-ever Coral Springs Teacher Appreciation Week and partnered with some of our local business owners who showed their appreciation by offering amazing discounts and deals for teachers. Teachers were also asked to help promote local business by posting their visits to social media with the hashtag #TeachersCoral Springs. We hope to see this effort’s participation grow in the coming years.

Broward County School Board Meetings: A recurring concern from both city and school leaders is the need to stay informed about the Broward County School Board and how their decisions could impact Coral Springs students and residents. To address this, I have prioritized attending all regular School Board meetings, relevant workshops, North Area District Advisory meetings, and Oversight Meetings. This enables me to gather critical information and report back to our City Commission and City Manager, providing updates on potentially impactful decisions. Our active presence also allows us to effectively advocate for Coral Springs’ priorities. Given that the school district represents 100 schools countywide, it is vital to keep the needs of Coral Springs’ 19 public schools at the forefront of decision-makers’ minds.

I am proud to represent the Coral Springs community. Looking forward, my goal is to continue to create meaningful opportunities to connect our students, educators, and the community. I am committed to fostering positive change and growth through new initiatives, programs, and practices that contribute to the success of our students, teachers, principals, staff, and city leaders.

I look forward to keeping the community updated on future plans and progress. April Wyche, Education Relationship Manager can be reached at awyche@coralsprings.gov.

As I enter my 20th year at Sagemont Preparatory School, I am thrilled to welcome back our families for another year of educational excellence! Sagemont Prep is deeply rooted in a philosophy that emphasizes entrepreneurship and innovation, fostering an environment where students’ intellectual curiosities, skills, and talents can flourish through experiential learning opportunities. Our students, known for their independent learning skills and passion-driven pursuits, are truly unique.

Our Educational Pillars guide the development of cognitive, interpersonal, and self-awareness skills, turning students into collaborators and critical thinkers who understand the importance of working towards the common good. Sagemont Prep students, whether authors, business owners, computer engineers, recording artists, or environmental advocates, are innovators.

Inspiring the Leaders of Tomorrow: Sagemont Prep offers endless possibilities through project-based learning, such as imagining future cities, pitching business solutions from kindergarten to 12th grade, understanding carbon footprints via our 4th Grade Signature Project, and managing a student-run café. Empowering students to seize opportunities confidently through diverse academic and co-curricular offerings is central to our mission. Notable programs include: AP Capstone Diploma – State-of-the-Art-Innovation Hubs & Science Labs - Links to Learning Early Childhood Curriculum - Upper Elementary Departmentalized Curriculum Model - Competitive Aerial Drones & Robotics - Civil and Aerospace Engineering - Executive InternshipsImmersive Spanish for Native and Non-native Speakers - Nationally Recognized Athletic Program - Sebastian Yatra Conservatory of the Arts - Student-driven & Student-led Clubs - Harkness Discussions - Embedded Community Service - Personalized Academic Pathways & College Counseling

Week Without Walls: Our Week Without Walls program offers community service and exploration opportunities beyond the classroom. This annual program includes forensic science with the FBI, software company internships, aviation studies with flight simulators, and horticulture at local farms. Travel is a key component, with trips to the Kennedy Space Center, US National Parks, Washington, D.C., and international destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Portugal, and the Azores Islands.

Sagemont Prep’s commitment to student voice and choice is evident through reflective practices like Digital Portfolios and Student-Led Conferences.

Digital Portfolios: All students, from early childhood to senior year, create digital portfolios to store evidence of learning, showcasing interests, growth, and mastery of skills. These portfolios include vision boards, reference letters, certificates, writing samples, projects, artwork, videos, and more. They are valuable tools during college admissions and student-led conferences.

Student-Led Conferences: These conferences empower students to demonstrate their understanding and communicate their academic and personal growth to parents and teachers, fostering personal voice and self-advocacy. This reflective experience helps students understand their strengths and identify areas for growth, highlighting achievements to the school community.

Sagemont Prep, named the #1 Most Diverse Private School in Florida, is proud to be a community that values diversity. Our students, representing 31 countries, are global citizens enriched by a population diverse in culture, thoughts, and expressions.

We eagerly anticipate a new school year filled with innovation, creativity, and excellence at Sagemont Prep!

Ramblewood Elementary School is excited about the upcoming 2024-25 school year, where we will fully embrace our new theme: “The Sky’s the Limit.” This theme reflects our commitment to exploring infinite possibilities and fostering growth. We are eager to hit the ground running with a focus on increasing student achievement, surpassing all academic goals, and maximizing teacher development. Our goal is to create an engaging and motivating environment for both students and staff.

Focus - Your One Stop Shop for Student Information: This year, we are introducing Focus, the district’s new web-based student information system. Focus will serve as a comprehensive hub where all student data will be stored and shared.

• Faculty Training: Our faculty will receive training to effectively utilize all features of the Focus system.

• Parent Training: Parents will also be trained on how to use the Focus Parent Portal. This portal provides families with convenient and secure access to their child’s school information, including grades, attendance, interim reports, report cards, and more, accessible anytime and anywhere. Parents can register for the Focus Parent Portal at browardschools.com/focus.

i-Ready for Personalized Learning: Students will continue to use i-Ready at school and home, which offers individualized instructional pathways in

both math and reading.

• Expected Usage: Students should use i-Ready for 50 minutes per week per subject.

• Parental Involvement: Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s usage at home to ensure they are meeting the recommended minutes. Get Involved! Join the PTO and Volunteer:

We invite parents to join our PTO or volunteer at the school. To volunteer or chaperone a field trip, you must be cleared first. Please fill out the volunteer application at the following link and allow several days for processing: Broward Schools Volunteer Application.

Riverglades is Wild About Learning this Fall! We’re looking forward to another wonderful school year and encourage all our families to get involved. Shortly after the school year starts, the Riverglades PTA will be hosting a Volunteer Fair where parents and extended family members can learn about all the different events, fundraisers and committees and sign up to help in whichever way best suits their abilities and schedules.

The Fall at Riverglades is full of wonderful events. We’ll be launching a new fundraiser this year- our Fun Run! Students will be bringing home details but get those running shoes ready. The Riverglades Hispanic Heritage Night will be in September. Our families will gather to enjoy music, art and food as we celebrate the many cultures of South and Central America. Our Gators are big givers and in October we will be collecting new and gently used costumes for our Halloween Costume Drive that we will be sharing with our sister school for their students. If any community members want to contribute, costumes can be dropped off at our front office. Riverglades will also be holding the Scholastic Book Fair at the end of October and students will be able to pick out great new books. The Boo Bash, one of our students’ favorite events, will also

be happening in October as well. We invite our families and community members to participate as sponsors to promote their businesses while our students enjoy bounce houses, music, food trucks, trick-or-treating and more

Our gardening initiative has also been growing throughout the past year, and brand-new gardening beds were installed for our vegetable garden for our students to enjoy. While our students continue to learn about gardening in school, we invite our families to join our Beautification Committee and help with various gardening and landscaping projects throughout the year. If you’re not able to participate in person, you can still help by joining our 2024-25 Flourish Fund making donations to help cover the cost of various plants and materials needed to keep our school grounds beautiful.

While the academic standards at Riverglades are very high, we encourage all our Gator families to get involved with as many extracurricular activities and events as possible, as our administration and teachers strive to strengthen our community and develop our students into well-rounded kids of character. Anyone with a child at Riverglades is invited to join our PTA for more ways to get involved and volunteer. All event details as well as volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available at www.RivergladesPTA.com
