Dear Cooper City Residents,
I hope you had a wonderful summer filled with moments to enjoy well-deserved time off with family and friends. For our students, teachers, administrators, and all school families, I wish you a safe, happy and successful school year! May this year be filled with learning, growth and memorable experiences.
In looking back, we marked National Park and Recreation Month in July. While this designation was only for a month, it serves as a testament to the yearround dedication and creativity of our Parks and Recreation Department. Staff and volunteers consistently strive to enhance the quality of life for our community. This month-long celebration served as a well-deserved tribute to their hard work and the positive impact they have on “Someplace Special.”
Looking ahead, I am thrilled to extend an invitation to several exciting events taking place in the fall season. On Saturday, September 14, we will host the highly anticipated Touch-a-Truck event. This interactive experience allows children to indulge their curiosity, sit behind the wheel of their favorite vehicles, and explore the world of big trucks and construction equipment. As always, the event promises to be a thrilling adventure for the entire family. Later in the month, on September 27, trade old stories for new adventures as we host our annual Book Swap at the Community Center. This event is free to attend, so bring the whole family!
In October, Cooper City will come alive with “spooktacular” events ahead of Halloween. Registration for the Halloween Home Decorating Contest will open on October 1, so get those great ghoulish ideas flowing. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for Friday, October 18 when “BOO-per” City Halloween Extravaganza takes over Memorial Park. This has certainly become a favorite among residents, so don’t miss out on the festivities. Additionally, we will be at Countryside Shops, along Flamingo Road, for Trick-or-Treat Shop to Shop on Saturday, October 26 when families embark on a fun journey throughout the shopping plaza to collect sweet treats. Please remember, event dates and locations are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. Visit www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar to make sure you stay up to date on all special events.
All these family-friendly events are at the heart of our community, showcasing the unique charm and warmth that makes Cooper City, truly someplace special. They provide occasions for us to come together, to forge connections, and, to celebrate the vibrant spirit and creativity of our hometown.
Once again, I extend my deepest gratitude to all of you for your unwavering support and participation in making our city thrive. It is an honor to serve as your Mayor, and I am continuously inspired by the remarkable community spirit that defines Cooper City.
As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option 6.
Sincerely,
Greg Ross Mayor of Cooper City
Hello Davie Residents,
As we start another exciting school year with students, parents, and teachers getting adjusted to their busy schedules, please remember that it is never too late for your children to begin swim lessons, an essential life safety skill. Throughout the fall, swim lessons will be offered for children six months and older at the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center. Our certified Water Safety Instructors are proud to teach these skills to our community’s children as part of the Town’s #SaferBy4 campaign which is designed to help children reach their fourth birthday through drowning prevention.
Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department also offers many amazing programs, special events and youth sports leagues. Currently, we are accepting registrations for our Winter Soccer Leagues for children ages 3-14. Additonal youth sports are offered throughout the year, such as flag football, baseball, and basketball, with an opportunity to play for all skill levels. Youth sports participation provides many benefits for our children. In addition to helping parents reduce the ever-present device screen time, youth sports teach children teamwork and discipline, provide social opportunities, and assist with the development of self-esteem.
A wide variety of recreational programming is also offered in the Town of Davie, that promotes active lifestyles and the opportunity to learn new skills. All our Town’s classes and programs can be found by visiting our website at www.davie-fl.gov. I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few of our unique program offerings. Davie USA GOJU Karate classes take place at both the Pine Island Multipurpose Center and Ivanhoe Community Center. Karate has many benefits which include self-confidence, physical fitness, discipline, courtesy, respect for others and self-control. If you are looking to burn some calories, increase flexibility or reduce anxiety and stress, Davie Yoga is perfect for you. All skill levels are welcome and classes are held on a weekly basis at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Davie also provides a wide variety of senior programming at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Come join us for our weekly senior lunch, bingo, cards, beading, quilting, crafting and more. Senior field trips are also offered twice a month to exciting destinations throughout South Florida such as the Jungle Queen Riverboat, Zoo Miami, and the Frost Art Museum. In addition, Davie is proud to honor South Florida veterans at our yearround veterans’ breakfasts that take place the third Tuesday of every month at the Pine Island Multipurpose Center. Coffee is served starting at 9:00AM followed by a hearty breakfast at 9:30AM. We look forward to seeing our veterans at the next breakfast to say thank you for serving our country.
When looking through our activities, remember whether it’s community special events, swimming, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something to offer everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program, just call (954) 327-3941. As always, see you in the parks!
Sincerely,
Judy Paul Town of Davie Mayor
Greetings Plantation Residents:
Once again, summer fun has turned into fall fun. School is back in session, and youth sports leagues have begun for the season. Plantation’s children are busy, busy, busy, which means our parents are running around getting kids to practice and re-learning enough math to help with some homework. (Hopefully!)
We know your children’s commitments can begin to take over any free time you may have, but if, by some miracle, you can eke out a bit of time for yourself this fall, the city has many opportunities to help recharge your batteries. Revisit your youth by joining adult kickball. It is not as effortless as it was when we were 10, but still so much fun. We also have adult flag football, softball, and basketball. Please visit www.plantationadultathletics.com or call (954) 452-2507 for more information.
If tennis was once your game or something you always wanted to try, the Veltri Racquet Center has evening clinics designed to challenge all skill levels. Looking for something less structured? We have a warm and engaging community of players who participate in Tennis Under the Stars matches that are both competitive and social. Follow the Parks and Recreation Department on social media @plantationparks to keep up to date on registration times.
Do I even need to mention PICKLEBALL??? Our city courts are free and a great source of exercise and camaraderie. Most of our courts are located at Plantation Central Park, but we also have additional courts at Volunteer Park, Deicke Park, Seminole Park, and Jacaranda Park.
If you are looking for a little friendly or not-so-friendly competition, go to the Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club for a round of golf. If leisurely strolls are more your thing, the property has a 1.5-mile trail alongside Everglades-inspired wetlands.
The Plantation Aquatic Complex has open swim times for laps and adult water fitness classes. The city’s Recreation Quarterly Magazine offers information on those programs and classes held in our community centers, such as Improv, Voice Lessons, Ukulele Lessons, Painting, Salsa, Tai Chi, Zumba, Yoga, and open basketball gym times.
My hope is that this fall, our “big” kids of Plantation find activities, whether organized or disorganized, that bring them joy, good health, and community.
Happy Fall,
Mayor Nick Sortal Mayor of Plantation

For the 2023-2024 Cooper City Optimist Cobras’ Player of the Year, there’s one common theme that crosses the boundaries of two very different sports and three separate teams. Amanda Will has grown to believe in herself.
The travel soccer journey started when she was eight years old. She’s stuck with the same team, the same coaches and many of the same players for the past nine years.
“We have had our core group of girls since they came out of the recreational program at U9,” Cooper City Optimist coach John Valenti said. “Adding various players throughout the years has challenged the girls to continue to improve their individual skills.” A lot has changed for these now 16-17-year-old girls. Amanda’s growth, according to her coaches, comes from her attitude. “She’s gained confidence,” Cooper City Optimist coach Bob Brouse said. “She’s scoring goals.”Lots of “goals.”
Amanda is a forward on the 2007 team at Cooper City that competes in the Sunshine Conference and National League P.R.O. In the 2023-2024 season, Amanda netted 39 goals during the club season and added another 17 assists. After participating in the 2023 EXACT Sports Showcase, she was ranked No. 17 in the nation by EXACT SOCCER. “She’s a good role model for the team,” Brouse said. “She takes it seriously, which I love. I really appreciate that as a coach – players that want to be there and work hard.” And according to Cooper City High School head coach Kevin Coleman, that transferred to the high school level. “Over the last three years, I have seen Amanda grow as a very talented soccer player,” Coleman said.
By: Chris Will
“Besides her touches and strength getting better, her vision of the field and understanding of the game has made her an elite player.”
Amanda is also a competitive gymnast.“If she has a bad day in soccer, she can come to gym and have a good day in the gym,” Park Avenue Gymnastics’ head coach Kathy Semok said. “Soccer made her strong.”
And as Amanda goes into her final year of competition there is one more goal she hopes to score: A college scholarship to continue playing soccer.
“It’s a little bittersweet,” Brouse said. “I love it. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye. But it’s going to be good to see that next step.”
“I will cherish all the memories this team has given me over the years,” Valenti said. “It makes me proud to watch these girls move on to the next chapters in their lives, but I will be truly saddened that our time as a team is over.”
“Out of coaching for the past 18 years at the high school level, Amanda has been one of the best players that I have coached and one of the hardest working,” Coleman said.
“I just finished my 31st year at Park Avenue Gymnastics and coaching,” Semok said. “[Amanda] will be somebody that will be easy for me to remember as time goes by. I think she’s left a lasting impression on me.”
The Cooper City Optimist Club can be reached at (954) 434-2541 or online https://clubs.bluesombrero.com.
Another start to a new school year and is it already time to prepare for college? My child …
A) Just started high school.
B) Just started middle school.
C) Just finished kindergarten!
Maybe answer C is an exaggeration, but this question presents itself often when I am meeting with parents. College admissions and subsequent acceptation rates have become extremely competitive. That trend is not reversing.
As a child psychologist who interacts with schools from all grades, representing students with wide ranging ability levels, the following is a guide to help start your child’s school year off strong with an eye on their educational future
Elementary School: Let them have fun. Many parents provide programs for enrichment and/or enroll their children into highend private schools from the start of their education. A private school education cannot be looked down upon from almost every measurement. The recommendation here is to watch your child’s progress in school (public or private) and let them show you their path. If your child is showing an area that they are excelling in, supplement and enrich it. If they are showing an area of weakness, support it (extra help at school, one on one help with a parent or a tutor). If you are having strong emotions as a result of your child’s
difficulties, reach out for self help. If they are falling behind it is highly recommended to have them evaluated by a private child psychologist (the public school rarely catches the need). Teach them the habits they’ll need to be successful for .....
Middle School: Hold on! It does not always, but it can get rocky. Watch for emotional growth and maturity (or what appears to be immaturity). Support and guide. Do it again. Keep them on track academically. High school credits start presenting themselves. Help them to think those opportunities through. Support and guide (yes again! And do not forget about your own wellbeing). That should keep you busy until...
High School: Support and guide. If they are still showing a deficit at this point consult with a Child Psychologist who does evaluations (no, it is actually never too late). Let the high school guide you, but follow up with the school, provide recommended supports for the student and yourself! Start visiting schools early to get your student focused on college. There are countless supports available privately and through your school. Use them and let the process develop. Regardless of you child’s age, enjoy each school year and help them grow as a person and a student. The rest will take care of itself. Nestled within the vibrant Plantation community, Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School stands as a beacon of educational innovation and growth. In our inaugural year as a magnet school, we have achieved remarkable milestones!
Our school has three distinct magnet programs: Aerospace & Engineering, E-Commerce & Entrepreneurship, and Innovative Arts. In our Aerospace & Engineering program, students are propelled into a world of exploration and discovery. Through hands-on projects and immersive experiences, the students dove into the realms of flight, space exploration, and technological innovation.
We believe in fostering a spirit of curiosity and inquiry at Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School. Our Aerospace & Engineering program provides students with opportunities to design and build rockets, explore principles of aeronautics, and engage in problem-solving activities that mirror real-world challenges faced by engineers and astronauts.
We are proud to maintain close ties with Plantation Middle School and Plantation High School, fostering a collaboration across the grade levels. In an exciting partnership, our students will have the opportunity to work alongside middle and high school students while they learn to design, build, and launch rockets—a thrilling endeavor that embodies the spirit of innovation and teamwork.
In our Innovative Arts program, our students participate in transformative art shows that showcase their talents and celebrate their unique perspectives. In addition to art shows, our Innovative Arts program culminated in a spectacular production of “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” This timeless tale comes to life on stage, enchanting audiences with its captivating story and unforgettable characters. Through rehearsals, set design,
and performances, our students not only hone in on their artistic skills but also learn valuable lessons in teamwork, dedication, and self-confidence.
In addition to classroom learning, our students benefit from partnerships with industry professionals, such as Dr. Clements from NASA and Broward Sheriff’s Office, who inspire and mentor them on their journey of exploration. By nurturing their interest in STEM fields from a young age and providing them with opportunities to develop practical skills, we aim to cultivate the next generation of innovators and leaders in aerospace and engineering.
In our E-Commerce & Entrepreneurship program, students are immersed in the world of business. They learn not only the fundamentals of commerce but also the skills and mindset needed to thrive as entrepreneurs in the 21st century.
One of the cornerstones of our E-Commerce & Entrepreneurship program is the operation of our school store—a bustling hub of activities where students take on the roles of business owners, managers, and sales associates. However, the journey doesn’t start there. Before students can take on these responsibilities, they must undergo a rigorous selection process. They fill out job applications, participate in interviews, and demonstrate their readiness to take on the challenges of running a business. To kickstart the school store venture, students are tasked with creating a comprehensive business plan to apply for a loan.
Join us as we embark on this journey of exploration and growth. Welcome to Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School—where creativity knows no bounds, and every student is encouraged to shine.

Plantation Park Elementary School prides itself on being a true community school that treats everyone like family. Fall is a very busy time at PPE and it is full of all kinds of activities and fun for the whole family.
In the Fall, we look forward to greeting our returning scholars and meeting our new ones. To help our incoming Kindergarten families transition, we offer a “Hey, Look Us Over” event in the spring of the previous school year. This allows incoming families to get important information about our school and to learn how to best help their child prepare for the coming academic year. In assisting our parents with the transition, we offer them a “Tears & Cheers” breakfast on the first day of school. This allows new parents to meet fellow incoming parents as well as introducing them to our PTA members and staff.
Students will hit the ground running in their new classes as they make new friends, get to know their new teacher, and find out what it means to be in a new grade level. The first few weeks are all about building a family in the classroom, getting to know one another, and learning how to work together to create a community. These connections are solidified at our Family Fun Night Out event that’s sponsored by our
PTA. Through this event, families get a chance to interact with one another and meet some of the new friends their child or children have made. There are all kinds of games, food trucks, face painting, and more.
Fall also means that our students get to participate in the first of two of our Principal’s Reading Challenge events that take place during the year. The purpose of each challenge is to promote reading throughout the school year, and it is very easy to participate. Depending on the grade level, students can have someone read a book to them, they can read to themselves, or read with a partner. The requirement is to read 25 books and record book titles in a log. Once they submit their book log, they can participate in a special celebration party with our principal, Dr. Osgood. It is a well-attended event.
Plantation Park Elementary thrives on the support and connection that we have with our community. We are a family. It takes everyone working together to ensure that our students are able to be successful and meet their full potential. We are proud to say that at Plantation Park, we are doing just that.
Plantation Park Elementary is located at 875 SW 54th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-7150.
