n November 21st, 2015 from 6-8pm the Parkland Library will be the host of a historic event for our city. The Parkland Friends of the Library, Parkland Historical Society and the City of Parkland present Paleo-Parkland: The Story of the Margate Blount Archaeological Site. You may not be aware that Parkland has an archaeological site located off of Trails End Road just west of Pine Trails Park and next to the old auxiliary fire station. In September, 2014 Ken Cutler, current Vice President of the Parkland Friends of the Library, was attending a meeting of the Parkland Historical Society and learned of Jeff Schwartz’ desire to have the City make the site into a park. When Cutler enquired about the site’s history, artifacts and details, none of the members of the group knew much about it. Cutler, who had previously researched and presented the origins of Holmberg Road, took on the challenge of researching the history of the site. “I found out that in 2009 Parkland and Broward County entered into an Archaeological Site Agreement after having ordered a 2008 archaeological survey of the site which found it to be of ‘local and regional significance and qualifies for listing on the National Register of Historic Places’,” Cutler said. “They were trying to protect the site while still allowing for the building of the auxiliary fire station.” But this didn’t reveal the history of the site so he looked further. What he found was an article written in the 1983 September-December issue of The Florida Anthropologist entitled “Bridge to the Past: Excavations at the Margate-Blount Site,” by Wilma B. Williams. The article describes the site’s early history: “Margate Blount site was apparently known as early as ca. 1940, when Bruce Blount, who was leasing the property, observed what appeared to be a wooden crypt filled with skeletons on the site (personal communication with Bruce

Blount, 1959). In 1959, the site area was being cleared by a bulldozer to allow for the expansion of a sod farm, when the bulldozer inadvertently struck the mound and scattered bones everywhere. Blount alerted various people, including Dr. Jack Mickey of Broward County’s Medical Examiner’s Office. Eventually, when the age of the skeletons was determined, other individuals were notified including the author and others who would later form the founding nucleus of the Broward County Archaeological Society.” At the time, Parkland had not as yet become incorporated so the site was named for the adjacent village of Margate and its discoverer, Bruce Blount. If you have visited the Parkland City Hall and seen the wall of mayors’ portraits you may recognize that Bruce Blount was the first Mayor of Parkland. In fact, Parkland would not have existed without him. Blount married Lois Nell Hyde in 1947, started a family and inherited land in Northwest Broward County from his father. Blount had a vision to form a city on a portion of the land he owned and hired civil engineers and surveyors to do it. The City Charter for the new city of Parkland was approved by the Florida House of Representatives on July 10, 1963 and was signed by Florida Governor Farris Bryant on August 13, 1963. Bruce Blount served as mayor until 1964 and he died in 1983. The November exhibition, along with a full display of information about the Native Americans that lived in our area, artifacts and information about the archaeological site and the digs on that site, will also serve as an opportunity for the City to recognize the Blount family for its contributions to the City and the archaeological site. Cutler tracked down Mrs. Lois Blount, the 89 year old wife of Bruce Blount, who intends to be at the event with her family. It will be a very special evening.

community service requirement for all high school students in Broward County is 40 hours, of approved service. Most students graduate with well over that amount. If a student earns over 250 service hours from 8th grade graduation through high school graduation, they would be eligible to wear a silver cord during their graduation ceremony. As a parent, you can help your child find organizations and places to volunteer and hopefully become engaged in. Here are some areas where local teens have developed a strong tie: • The Humane Society of Broward County • Habitat for Humanity • ARC Broward County and City Parks • Beach Clean Up Projects • Broward Outreach Center “We are hoping the requirement for service hours sparks interest in helping others, not just who can earn the most hours,” said South Plantation High School Principal Christine Henschel. Students can also take an initiative and create their OWN service projects. Here are some ideas your child may be interested in: 1. Book Drive. Begin collecting books from everyone you know. Start a library in one elementary class. Maybe go to your favorite elementary teacher that you had and ask them if you can create a library for them in their room. 2. Park clean up. You can gather a few friends and help clean up ANY park. Just think of the impact you could make if you went to ONE park for ONE hour each weekend.

3. Coat drive. So many students in Broward County do not have cool weather clothing due to our warm weather. When we do have a cold snap, there are thousands of students who do not have proper clothing. You could collect jackets and sweaters from families for each social worker in the public schools. 4. Snack drive. Collect boxes of snacks for the social workers in the public schools to keep in their office. They know the students who need the food and usually can set up something for students in need to come by their office each Friday to take some snacks with them so they have food on the weekends. 5. Coach a sport. Be a volunteer coach for any team. Helping other children counts toward your service hours. Help out in any area you are strongest in. You can check in your city to help with city leagues, but there are also several county leagues that help children with special needs learn to play sports. Every student should check with their guidance counselor for log in sheets and always make a copy of any hours worked before turning in the forms to your school. A great website is www.handsonbroward.org for projects in Broward County by dates and times.

inter illnesses can include a wide array of sickness – everything from the common cold and flu to sinus, ear and upper respiratory infection, bronchitis and even pneumonia. The best way to fight these common bugs is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Healthy, everyday habits can help keep your immune system strong and help to fight colds before they even begin. Follow these tips to stay healthy this winter: • Wash your hands often – Wash hands frequently throughout the day, especially after being in public places or eating. Use warm water and antibacterial soap. • Follow and teach proper sneezing etiquette – The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teaching kids to sneeze into the nook of their elbow to prevent the spread of germs. • Eat well – A well-balanced diet filled with plant-based food, lean protein and whole grains is one of the most important steps toward maintaining overall health. • Get moving – Regular, moderate exercise for approximately 30-minutes a day, even something as simple as a walk or playing in the backyard, can help the immune system ward off infections. • Remember your flu shot – Getting your flu shot early is a good idea, as it can take two weeks for the body’s immune system to develop the antibodies to protect against the virus. MedExpress offers flu shots for children and patients ages four years old and up. Even the best prevention plan can sometimes fall short. If you or a family member does become sick, be sure to visit a health care professional to feel better faster. Commonplace illnesses such

as cold, strep throat and pharyngitis, as well as more severe illnesses such as influenza or even meningitis and tonsillitis, can be attributed to fatigue, fever, congestion and body aches. With so many similar symptoms, a health care professional can help determine what’s causing your sickness and the best option for treatment. Urgent care centers such as MedExpress offer treatment options for unexpected illnesses. Open 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, patients can just walk in at a time that works best for them. After your visit, these tips can also help you feel better faster. • Sip soup – The soothing taste and smell of hot soup can help you relax and soothe a sore throat. • Drink up – Fluids, including electrolyte beverages, can help make sure you’re getting the hydration you need. If you are feeling nauseous, take small sips and don’t gulp. • Humidify – Relieve nasal congestion and throat pain by breathing moist air. Take a warm shower or use a clean humidifier. • Chill out – Plenty of rest helps the body to fight infection. Make sure you’re giving your body the rest it needs to get better. • Gargle – For sore throats, gargling warm salt water can help relieve swollen, inflamed tissue in the throat. I

have written articles before about the use and abuse of cell phones. This article will cover a related, but different view. The definition of self-esteem is a feeling of satisfaction that someone has in himself or herself and his or her own abilities (Merriam-webster.com). It is something that we all strive for in our children. We provide them with dance lessons, sports leagues, musical instruction and academic opportunities to help them reach a higher potential. Something has changed the rules of the parenting game. Technology. Technology is advancing at an astonishing rate. Many of us remember a time when cell phones, home computers, emails and…. social media did not exist. The “dark ages.” The advances have changed our lives in beneficial ways. We can find information in seconds, connect with family and friends and the business applications appear endless. The area that concerns me centers on social media. While it serves as a great method to connect, it comes at cost. Both children and adults alike focus on the events that they are NOT invited to. The party they did not know about, the friend that did something without them. When a relationship ends (break ups, loss of friendships) individuals preoccupy themselves with the page of their lost relation. The pain that comes from

these and similar behaviors is unnecessary and has been intensified by ease of technology. Cell-f esteem however is the use of social media to present an image of who and what we are. This includes frequent postings, sharing of pictures, taking selfies and constant updates of where one is, what they are doing and who they are with. Individually, each of these events are positive ways of sharing one’s life. But what happens when it becomes the main way that a child or young adult sees their life? Can it become the focus of an individual’s socialization to the exclusion of finding genuine enjoyable experiences? Research will help to answer these questions, but if it is an area that is already causing concern, there is a way to improve our children’s use of and dependency on their electronic devices. Simply put, use yourself as a role model. Take one week and remain aware of how often you answer your texts, calls and notifications while around your children. Then, reduce your behaviors while sharing with your family why you are making the change. In the upcoming weeks you will be more aware and be able to have them do the same. I invite you to reach out to me with questions or with future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

he students at James S. Hunt Elementary celebrated “Whirled Peace” by planting their pinwheels with millions of children around the world on Friday, September 25, 2015. We planted a message of peace by having each student and staff member plant a pinwheel in our beautiful butterfly garden. Students and staff also wore white on Monday, September 21st, the International Day of Peace and students participated in a writing project explaining how they demonstrated peace in their school, home, and community. Additionally, students have also been modeling daily acts of peace and kindness. Mrs. Debi Renee London, our art teacher, guided her art class to create beautiful pinwheels for the students and staff to plant in Hunt’s Butterfly garden. Ms. Kollar, the school guidance counselor, along with the students, created a Peace Wall. Here is the essay from our first place winner of the peace essay contest, demonstrating how he shows peace in his community.

Eating a nourishing meal is something that many of us take for granted. Did you know that in South Florida, nearly one million people struggle with hunger, one in four children go to bed hungry and one in seven seniors face the choice between paying rent, buying medication or eating a healthy meal? A critical component of a high-quality life is good health, which starts with eating right. Unfortunately, lack of access to healthy and fresh foods is a very real problem that exists right here in our own backyard. Lack

of food can lead to serious problems. In children, it can lead to behavioral issues and decreased performance in school, as well as immediate and long-term health complications including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. For seniors, lack of food and poor nutrition can lead to memory loss and increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and kidney failure. In addition, seniors living on a fixed income are often forced to make the choice between vital medications and groceries. For the third year in a row, Sage Dental, formerly Gentle Dental Group is teaming up with Feeding South Florida to help make a difference in the lives of those who struggle to put food on the table. Having collected a combined total of 5,700 pounds of food in past year’s food drives, Sage Dental is now on a mission to collect even more food this year for South Floridians in need. From October 12th through November 21th, Sage Dental will be collecting non-perishable food items at all of its 30 South Florida dental offices. All of the food collected will

e are off to a great start exploring our Super Hero Powers at PSE! We know our teachers and staff have Super Hero Powers that they demonstrate every day by helping our students expand their knowledge and explore new and exciting subjects. Our students are also getting in on the fun by discovering their own super powers as they soar to new academic heights and embrace their super skills and strengths. PSE was very excited to participate in our second International Walk to School day on October 7th. With the support and participation of the Coral Springs Police Department, teachers, staff and PTO we had a tremendous turnout of students and parents walking to school! The carline was looking good … nice and short! PSE encourages their students and parents to walk to school, especially as our weather turns cooler, to promote a healthy way to start the day! Thank you to everyone who participated in our school fundraiser. Your support of this program and all our fundraisers provides funds directly to our classrooms through programs like First in Math and Accelerated Reader, school activities, technology and more. This year we are hoping to raise enough funds to help provide additional supplies to our Art, Music, and Physical Education programs. These programs can always use the support of additional donations or surplus supplies and equipment from our families and community businesses.

A

t Westglades Middle we are very excited to host once again the annual Harvest Drive. This is a district-wide program with the goal to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner, plus a week’s worth of groceries to 2,200 families in Broward County. Westglades Middle became a distribution site for the Harvest Drive four years ago, serving 200 families with students in public schools located in the surrounding areas. These families are carefully selected by school social workers. As we continue to work with these families beyond the holiday season, we have the opportunity to learn how the gift of the Harvest Drive provides them some relief at a time of need and the opportunity to celebrate and be thankful. The Harvest Drive is a collected community effort, made possible by the support of many schools in Parkland, Coral Springs and surrounding areas that will conduct drives and supply the Harvest Drive with non-perishable food items and monetary donations. The community comes together during our yearly Community Drop Off Night when children of all ages, teachers, parents and community volunteers begin the arduous process of sorting the collected items and preparing for packing. This year,

We had our first ever “Pasta Night” and were happy to see so many new PSE families join in for the food and fun! Special thanks to Carlucci’s for working with us to provide a delicious meal. We also had a fabulous fall book fair where our students were able to purchase the latest in all genres of books from Scholastic. Our students are always excited to “Get Caught Reading” at PSE!! Of course, Halloween Bingo was again “bootastic” with many creative costumes, “ghoulishly great” Bingo callers, prizes, pizza, and family fun! Thank you to our teachers and staff who are always willing to show their “Super Support” and help at our events, and to the PTO board members and the parents who volunteer and bring their students to participate in the events. Keep your eyes open for more activities coming up like Thanksgiving Basket Collections, McDonalds Family Night (Nov 17), PSE Character Trait parade (Nov. 24), and Winterfest (Dec. 16). If you would like to learn more about Park Springs Elementary or schedule a tour to see our “Panther Pride”, you can contact us at 754-322-7750 or visit our website at http://parksprings.browardschools.com/.

our community drop off night will take place on November 17th, from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm in the Westglades Middle School’s gymnasium. In keeping with the motto of the Harvest Drive, “Children Helping Children,” we encouraged the participation of all our students with the purpose of fostering the spirit of giving back to the community. The goal is for the entire school to get involved including staff, administration and every club. Every year Peer Counseling classes, SGA, FFEA, NJHS and other groups take a role in making the Harvest Drive a big success. This year we are very excited about our new Harvest Drive Club sponsored by Mrs. Deck and Ms. Pardo. The club will be the leading force beyond all fundraising, planning and organization efforts. We are also introducing Hoops 4 Harvest, our first teachers vs. teachers basketball game taking place on October 22nd. All proceeds from the game will benefit the Harvest Drive. We can’t wait to see our teachers and administrators competing on the court but still united by a common worthy cause. For more information on the Harvest Drive, visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com or you can contact Liliana Pardo-Posse, School Social Worker and “Chief Worker Bee” for the Harvest Drive at (954) 536-6294.

anti-bullying, anti-bias awareness program sponsored by sustain an inclusive school environment where all students feel valued and accepted. To become a No Place For Hate campus, thirty 5th grade student leaders went through a 3 hour training instructed by ADL representatives. All of the students and staff signed a Resolution of Respect promising to treat others fairly, be kind to everyone despite differences, and help when they see someone being treated badly. We are planning events on diversity, anti-bias, and how to respond appropriately to bullying or teasing.

ince 1976 Atlantis Academy has been educating students in an academic environment with autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD and other varying exceptionalities. Since then we have seen a growing need for a “transitional life after high school” program. Atlantis Academy has developed a program to meet the needs of these students and families. The Hands-On Life Skills & Transition Program supports the transitional needs of youth with disabilities. We use a person-centered “hands-on,” direct-instruction, and outcome-based life skills mastery program that combines academic, daily living, personal/social, and occupational skills into

integrated lessons designed to help students learn to function independently in society. The importance of learning and practicing self-advocacy and self-determination skills are crucial to the success of students in a college environment as well as in the workforce. omorrow’s Rainbow hosted its second annual Pony Jail ‘n Bale event, a familyfriendly fundraiser held on Sunday September 27th, from Noon to 3:00 PM. More than 500 people attended the fun-packed event, which was open to the public. All proceeds benefited children’s grief support programming at Tomorrow’s Rainbow. “The event was an exciting fundraiser,” said Abby Mosher, Founder/Executive Director of the unique nonprofit organization. “It was wonderful to share our farm with the community while raising much needed funds to help grieving children heal after the tragic death of a loved one.” Pony Jail ‘n Bale was made possible through the generous support of sponsors including Ahearn Jasco & Company, Publix, Elite Force Martial Arts, Jersey Mikes, and Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial. Volunteers from the community included ML24, Shape, Emerge Broward, North Broward Preparatory School and Tomorrow’s Rainbow. They all worked tirelessly to ensure that families and children of all ages were smiling and having a great time. Tomorrow’s Rainbow Pony Jail ‘n Bale included an interactive social media photo gallery called #SelfieRow where guests could use their smart phones to capture their photo in jail themed vignettes and post them with the hashtag #SelfieRow. Bounce houses, games, live music by Promises, petting area, line dancing, a pie eating contest, panning for gold, Manure Madness, food, and warrants for arrest were issued for members of the Broward County

community to raise funds for Tomorrow’s Rainbow. Once arrested, philanthropic inmates were locked up with a Tomorrow’s Rainbow four-legged grief counselor - a miniature horse or farm animal - until they raise a minimum of $1,500 in bail or “bale.” Mosher has a passion for sharing the Tomorrow’s Rainbow mission through community celebrations. “Everyone had a fantastic time, but also knew why they were there. It’s about helping the children,” says Mosher. Consistent with its motto, “Guiding Children Back to Joy,” Tomorrow’s Rainbow offers hope and healing to children grieving the death of a loved one. “We raised more than $28,000 which means that we can provide two support groups to grieving children and teens for an entire year,” Mosher added. “That’s a huge impact and we can thank our community and inmates for that!” Tomorrow’s Rainbow is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Located in Coconut Creek, the Tomorrow’s Rainbow Ranch is a unique setting for equine-assisted grief support offered free of charge to children and teens that have experienced the death of a loved one. Through an innovative program that combines facilitated peer support groups with miniature horse interactions and therapeutic play, grieving children are guided through their own unique grief journey in a way that is meaningful to them. Tomorrow’s Rainbow has created an emotionally safe environment for hope and healing through guidance, education and support. Contact Abby Mosher at (954) 978-2390 or www.TomorrowsRainbow.org.

arkside Elementary is having a great start to the 20152016 school year ! We had our grade level Open Houses in September when teachers had the opportunity to share with parents their child’s classroom routine as well as the expectations for the school year. Our annual Title I meeting and parent training was a huge success. On this evening, parents learned strategies to help their child extend their learning at home. Teachers led sessions on various topics dealing with technology resources to support their

child’s academic needs, as well as sessions on reading and math. Our PTA hosted a wonderful ice cream social in conjunction with our Scholastic Book Fair. Everyone was also treated to a visit by Clifford the Big Red Dog. Parents and students had the opportunity to purchase and paint tiles for our Legacy Wall. Parkside is looking forward to our first annual Family Thanksgiving lunch on November 20th when parents will be invited to join their child(ren) for a Thanksgiving feast.

at Country Hills Elementary, including Mrs. Goldfarb, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Greenberg, and Ms. Tait received free plants and program support through the Broward Habitat Centennial Garden project. A grant was written by these teachers to make this project happen. Prior to planting the native plants, the students received support in the form of an educational program and consultation from a pollinator garden expert from the Youth Environmental Alliance. The students are excited to see the variety of butterflies that will inhabit our campus. The project aims to stem the loss of habitat for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. About 80 students ranging from K-5 learned to dig holes, remove plants from their pots without hurting them, place the plants into the holes, add backfill and water, and place mulch around them, if they required mulch. Several parent volunteers were there to assist the students

throughout the process. The students learned how to identify different types of butterflies and which host plant each type needs to lay its eggs on. Adult monarch butterflies cannot reproduce if they cannot find milkweed plants to lay their eggs on, for example, and upon hatching from those eggs, the caterpillars will only eat milkweed. Once a caterpillar has eaten as much as it can, it goes into a chrysalis for a few days, or sometimes over a week, before emerging as a butterfly. Unlike their younger selves, butterflies get their nutrients from the nectar of flowers. In celebration of Broward’s 100th Anniversary, NatureScape has partnered with the National Wildlife Federation and the Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) to create or renovate 100 butterfly gardens at Broward County schools, parks, and other prominent places. Made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, the Broward Centennial Habitat Gardens will provide that important connection between the critical need for native plants to prevent the continuing decline of the Monarch butterfly and other pollinator populations.

R

amblewood Elementary School students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on science this year as they learn how to plant, grow and maintain five organic garden beds this fall with their teachers! Our Kindergarten team set up a day full of “green” learning stations and activities this fall as they opened the gardens to 120 kindergarten students. Administrators, teachers, students and parent volunteers enjoyed working together as they planted seeds and a variety of plants that are known to grow well in South Florida. Students will learn lessons throughout the year including healthy food choices, food groups, measuring plant growth, weather considerations in respect to growing, how to attract helpful insects, and much more. School gardens provide students will a myriad of benefits, including healthy bodies and strong minds. Research suggests that children learn better if they can move because

it provides the brain with fuel in the form of oxygen and glucose, increases spatial awareness, and engages the body in static and dynamic balance, which aids focus and attention and integrates coordination of the body with organization of thoughts. Students engaged in Action Based Learning improve memory retention, reinforce academic concepts, balance brain chemicals while experiencing whole-brain, whole-body learning. Our students will be learning STEM science lessons across the curriculum as they engage in math through measuring, science through observation and exploration, writing and reading while journaling, and art while drawing and painting. In addition, they are learning truly valuable lessons in environmental stewardship and sustainability as they work together in learning all phases of gardening and other related “green” initiatives, including composting, recycling and water and electricity conservation.

e had a fantastic start this school year! Heron Heights celebrated International Peace Week with an array of activities throughout the week. Thanks to our School Counselor, Mrs. Celestin, volunteers, staff and students for spreading peace, love and happiness around the campus. PTO also kicked the school year off with a fantastic fundraiser selling coupon books; we also held a Book Fair and hosted BINGO Night. Students enjoyed spending quality time with their family at Glow in the Dark BINGO and winning prizes. What better way to support Walk or Ride to school day on October 7th, than by practicing bike safety rules at school. Thanks to Mr. O’Rorke, our P.E. teacher, for helping students stay safe on their bikes and scooters and practicing street safety rules. A huge thanks to everyone who donated non-perishable items for the Harvest Drive! During this time of year, one of the greatest feelings is to give to others in need. Now families in need will receive grocery staples for a complete Thanksgiving dinner. Please make sure you stay updated with the latest information at HHE by frequently viewing our website at www.heronheightselementary.com. We would like to wish all of our families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Enjoy the time with your friends and family! All the Best,

SCHOOLS s part of Stoneman Douglas DECA’s chapter project “I am Enough,” motivational speaker, Scott Fried discussed self-acceptance and shared his story about living with contradiction to over 1200 students on Monday, October 5, 2015 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the auditorium. The goal of “I am Enough” is to educate chapter, school and community members about learning to accept our differences and appreciating the qualities that make us unique. They are hosting several events in addition to the assembly to promote positive energy and the sharing of student’s stories. In the present generation, students are no longer defined by their character, but rather by numerical figures, such as their GPA and SAT scores. It is important that today’s youth is driven to reach their personal goals as compared to living up to the expectations of others. On October 5, 2015, Scott Fried presented a speech about learning how to overcome the odds and finding joy in each day. Scott is an international award-winning speaker, youth educator, and HIV/AIDS advocate. He has spoken at various schools, leadership programs, and events such as TED Talks to ensure

that students are educated about issues facing the current generation such as HIV/AIDS, as well as educating students on how to deal with everyday obstacles. Marjory Stoneman Douglas DECA is the largest club at MSD and is the eighth largest chapter in the world with over 500 members. All students in Hospitality, Marketing and Academy of Finance classes have the opportunity to become members of DECA, a worldwide student organization. DECA is a career and technical student organization composed of more than 200,000 students who are interested in careers in marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality or management. DECA enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition. DECA student members leverage their DECA experience to become academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, and experienced leaders. ooking for something fun and creative to do with your kids this New Years eve? How about creating a New Years Time Capsule with the Kids. This is such a fun and easy project to help freeze a memory of your little ones in time each year! Take some time this New Year creating a family time capsule with memories of special events. Your kids will love decorating the “Time Capsule” - an empty tennis ball canister. Then the whole family can get involved

filling the capsule with keepsakes from the year, like photos, awards, drawings, and other reflections of your year. We have even created a free “Family Time Capsule Worksheet”, that is available on our website www.myartpaperscissors.com. This activity is a great opportunity for kids to explore their creative side in decorating the time capsule, and it also gives them the chance to reflect on the past year and recognize notable accomplishments and memories. The fun continues the following year, when they get to open the time capsule and reflect on those memories. Then they get to do it all over again by re-decorating the canister (or by creating a whole new one), and refilling it with new memories and keepsakes!

1. Go to Art Paper Scissors website

www.myartpaperscissors.com and print the Family Time Capsule Worksheet.

2. Cut out the clipart you would like to use to decorate your time capsule

3. Put a thin coat of Mod-Podge and stick your clip art on to the can. After adhering the images, put a thin coat of the Mod-Podge on top of the images

4. Spread glue inside your can shake your glitter inside and let the can dry.

5. When dry, punch two holes on the cans plastic top

leaving a space between the holes. Lace the tulle between the holes and add a knot. You can use this to make a cute way to open the can.
