Dear Readers,

2

The holiday season is upon us! Every year, the Interfaith Coalition of Coral Springs and Parkland hosts a Pre-Thanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service. This a service in which clergy and people from all different faiths come together to give thanks. It is a wonderful service that reminds us we are all connected and we are in this together. This year’s service will be on Tuesday, November 22, at 7:00pm at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Coral Springs. I hope you will be able to join us. We have reached the final stretch of 2017. The good news is we set our clocks back in November. The Parkland Farmers’ Market kicks off another season and there are many activities for the whole family throughout the final months of the year. As the weather cools a bit the Parkland Farmers’ Market will again make the Equestrian Center in Parkland home two Sundays—the first and third—each month from November through April. Our market, and its more than 100 vendors, feature not only organic and conventional fruits and vegetables, but unique creations made on the premises like apple cider donuts, paella, and gigantic Bavarian pretzels. The Parkland Farmer’s Market kicks off Sunday, November 5th and the following three market dates (November 19th, December 3rd, and December 17th) feature craft fairs in addition to our usual vendors. These additions make the Parkland Farmers’ Market not only the best place for all your tailgate party provisions, but also the best place to buy unique holiday gifts for family and friends who seem to already have everything. November is also the month in which we celebrate and honor our Veterans. Join us November 11th at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park at 5:30pm with a tribute to our Veterans. We then continue the evening with two free concerts and 20 food trucks for another installment of the best concert series in south Florida—Eats ‘n’ Beats. November’s performers are J.M. and the Sweets—voted best unknown band—and Sinatra tribute performer Jeff Grainger. Then join us again on December 9th for the final Eats ‘n’ Beats of 2017. Parkland residents can register for the popular Hayride, Hoedown, and Bonfire at the Equestrian Center on November 18th. This event is everything you imagine: horse-drawn hayrides, a bonfire with sing-a-longs, entertainment, and s’mores of course. December 21st is the annual Parkland Snowfest for our residents. Kids love this event complete with snow. Activities include: dual snow slides so kids can race their friends, a special area for toddlers and everyone can enjoy crafts, music, and more. Registration for this event opens to Parkland residents on December 1st and, as one of the most popular events of the year, it fills quickly so register early. After the first of the year, the fun picks up even more in Parkland. The Farmers’ Market helps you with your New Year’s Resolution on January 7, by adding a Health and Wellness fair to the Market. On January 13, Eats ‘n’ Beats features Matthew Sabatella and the Rambling String Band playing American heritage music and Bounce which has been entertaining audiences for nearly 10 years. The Mayor’s Chess Challenge comes to the P-REC at Pine Trails Park on January 20th, the Farmers’ Market returns on January 21st, and all of Parkland will be parking at the Equestrian Center on January 27th for another Drive-In Movie. That’s how you ring in the new year. I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season and a great start to 2018! Thank you for being part of our community. You can keep up with all the events happening in Parkland by following us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and subscribing to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notify me. That will ensure you never miss an event. I love hearing from residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. Sincerely,

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the winter issue of the Coral Spring Parkland Sports and Activities Directory. We are well into the school year and are now heading for the holiday season. As I write this letter, we are feeling the first cool days of our beautiful South Florida fall season. There are a number of exciting events coming to our community. There is the Annual Coral Springs Holiday Parade and Downtown in December, which is my children’s favorites and should not be missed. The City of Parkland has an amazing line up of events including: Eats and Beats, the Parkland Farmers Market and Drive in Movies. Outside of our two beautiful cites you can enjoy great sporting events. On Saturday, December 2nd, you can check out the HoopHall Miami Men’s College basketball tournament at the American Airlines Arena. Then on Saturday, December 16th, you can see the 24th Annual Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, featuring the University of Florida and Florida State University. There are many other events including: The 55th Annual Pompano Boat Parade, South Florida Veg Fest, & Toys in the Sun Run, just to name a few. Check out our extensive holiday calendar for all the details. In this issue, we feature an amazing story about our local tackle football team, the Coral Springs Chargers, and their generous response to the flooding in Houston from Hurricane Harvey. They collected supplies, food and water and caravanned to the impacted area of Texas. They did all this before realizing that our own neighborhood might take a direct hit from Hurricane Irma. Be sure to read city updates from Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky and Mayor Skip Campbell of Coral Springs. We are so lucky to have great representatives in our cities that are always looking to improve the quality of life for their residents. The holiday season is a great time to remind our children and ourselves of how lucky we are and that there are so many less fortunate. There are quite a few worthy local causes that could use your support. The Harvest Drive is celebrating their 25th Anniversary, read our feature story to see how you can help. Mark your calendars and make sure you come out to support the 6th Annual Walk Off for Cancer on December 3rd, hosted by local baseball superstar Anthony Rizzo and presented by JM Lexus. Remember our team is always looking for editorial stories and photos, so please submit your photographs and stories about your kids doing great things. Send your information to: cspdirectory1@gmail.com. Our entire team wishes you and your family the very best this holiday season!

My best to you,

Kim Kadel

CHALLENGER LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL

Challenger Baseball started in Broward County in 1990. The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5-22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+.Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30- 5:15 from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. For more information please contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION (VR) Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a federal-state agency that helps people with disabilities prepare for, get, or keep a job. VR offers Transition Youth Services, which help students with disabilities train for a job, continue their education, or find a job after high school. Each student will have the opportunity to participate in career counseling, work readiness training, and work experiences in the community. Students will also learn about self-advocacy and achieving independence through employment. For more information, call the Coral Springs VR office at (954) 346-2828 or visit our website at www.rehabworks.org.

ROCK DREAMS At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group.

FIT FRIENDS

Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks.

ART WORKS

At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page.

READING WITH FRIENDS

Research indicates that literacy skills play a large role in language development and academic success. Oftentimes, individuals with special needs become excluded from literacy programs due to the barriers that exist such as prolonged sitting, reduced opportunities for participation and a lack of understanding from the community. Led by a speech-language pathologist, Reading With Friends strives to deliver a well-rounded experience in which children can explore books through all of their senses along with their new friends. Our mission is to provide an accepting and inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy literacy while building friendships.

T

en, nine, eight…. Happy New Year! After the midnight kiss and horn sounds die down, now what. Many of us wake up with a resolve to improve ourselves over the next year. New Year’s resolutions can range from less gossiping, to weight loss, to new jobs and everything in between. Many of these resolutions last just a little while, but some people have used these resolutions as a springboard to revamp their life. Our children see us making these resolutions year after year. Many of our resolutions fall on deaf ears since it is the same promise we’ve made so often, but haven’t kept. These children have shared their insights about how to make resolutions you can keep. Each one told me to make a promise you can keep. I was told to start small, look at how you improve day by day and if you stumble, don’t give up just start again tomorrow. I have shared the top 10 Resolutions by ten of our upstanding t(w)eens in Coral Springs and Parkland: TOP 10 WAYS TO START YOUR YEAR OFF RIGHT 1. Be more organized so you can be more efficient and productive when doing your school work. ~Justin Friedland (15 yrs. Old) 2. Focus on family and friends and actually spend quality time with them. ~Morgan Koss (14 years old)

3. Be more respectful of others and listen to their opinions. ~Dylan Friedland (12 years old) 4. Don’t dwell on the past; every day is a new day. ~David Elias (13 years old) 5. Always be kind and always be you, no matter what. ~Autumn Erez (8 years old) 6. Keep a stockpile of books around so you never run out. That way you are never bored. ~Maddy Erez (12 years old) 7. In order to get smarter and become a better reader, read a chapter book every month. ~Savvy Anselmo (10 years old) 8. Work harder each and every day to get better and better. ~Carter Brooks (11 years old) 9. Be kinder to the people whom you care about. ~Danial Cotler (12 years old) 10. It’s important to be organized and to start the year with a good and positive attitude. ~Alana Blumenthal (12 years old) If we just follow one of these resolutions, we will all become better people. Our children can truly be our future and show us how to change the world one day at a time.

The Dangers of Pseudo-Psychology P

By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

seudo-psychology refers to a false/unscientific approach to psychology. The science of psychology is founded upon rigorous research and evidence guided scientific method. This article will guide you on how to detect pseudo-psychology, understand its dangers, and access trustworthy sources of help for mental health concerns. In our current society, the internet is often our primary source of information gathering and sharing. This has become a breeding ground for pseudo-science. Moreover, as many children and adolescents tend to consult with the Web prior to and in place of approaching parents, this age group is at particular risk! At best, pseudo-psychology sources may fail to recommend effective action to address a concern; at its worst, pseudo-psychology often perpetuates harmful notions that can actually exacerbate mental health issues. For example, there are non-scientific internet sources that encourage individuals to avoid or stop taking psychotropic medication, which may prevent those living with particular conditions from functioning or experiencing quality of life, or even cause harmful side effects. Other pseudo-psychology sources encourage food restriction and living significantly underweight as a “lifestyle choice” rather than an eating disorder, which may increase the fatal risks of anorexia nervosa. Such great dangers urge us to wonder, how can this be avoided? Here’s what you can do: • Examine the information source. Unfortunately, many non-scientific articles, webpages, and books have titles that sound relevant and promising - but because anyone can write and release information, education and credentials must be considered. Information or advice related to mental health should be provided by individuals with a degree and/or professional license in psychology. A quick Google search of the letters listed behind an author’s name can remedy this.

Monitor the information sources your children are accessing. As developing minds are highly impressionable, it is critical to ensure that children are provided accurate/ safe information about mental health. Besides checking sources, making time to discuss health matters in a caring and nonjudgmental manner will help achieve this goal. For teens who resist these “talks,” provide them with a trustworthy resource instead (e.g., search keyword for articles and books on the American Psychological Association’s website: www.apa.org) and remind them that you are available for questions or conversation. • Seek appropriate professional services. It is important to seek professional care when problems impacting behavioral, social, emotional, academic, or occupational well-being arise. Finding a professional with the proper mental health education and/or licensure for your needs should be the focus - after all, you wouldn’t go to an eye doctor for a root canal! The ever-handy Google search or direct inquiry about one’s credentials can go a long way. The dangers of pseudo-psychology are certainly alarming - but by practicing and sharing these tips, you can avoid these risks and keep the mental health and well-being of you and your loved ones a priority. We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrMacias@DrYudell.com or DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

Engaging Your Child in the Learning Process

C oral Spr ing s & Par k la nd S por ts & Act iv it ie s D i r e ct o r y | I ssu e 19 | N ove mb e r 2017 - Januar y 2018

By Dr. Raymond Huntington, Co-Founder of Huntington Learning Center

If you’ve ever tried to motivate your child to study or

do homework, you probably know that it’s much easier to be successful when you get your child’s input and buyin. Research shows that students who are more engaged in the learning process, after all, are more attentive and focused, and generally more motivated to learn increasingly challenging topics. Although your child’s teacher plays a big role, there are many ways you can encourage your child to become more connected and interested in what he or she learns. Here are several tips on how to do just that:

Frequently start conversations about school topics. You can strengthen your child’s critical thinking, communication, and other related skills by asking thoughtful questions about school, your child’s opinion on an issue, the books your child reads and more. Skip the yes/no questions and instead focus on those that encourage inquisition and thinking from different perspectives. Asking about the “why” and not just the “how” will strengthen your child’s ability to formulate ideas and foster the active learning process. It will also send the message that learning for the sake of learning is worthwhile. Talk about alternatives. Teachers usually encourage students to learn multiple methods to solving problems or answering questions and give them the freedom to choose the one they understand and like the best. You can reinforce your child’s understanding of a subject by talking through alternate viewpoints or ways of solving a problem. If your child is working on a multiplication problem, for example, ask about other ways to get to the same answer and why your child chose a certain approach. Explaining different strategies to you will strengthen your child’s understanding and build his or her confidence—activities that lead to enhanced engagement. Take a supporting role. One of the simplest ways to increase your child’s level of engagement is to put him or

her in the driver’s seat—always. Set ground rules at home that make it clear that you are available for guidance, not answers, and that school is your child’s job. That means attempting things before asking for help and being resourceful about finding answers to questions. Your child is responsible for school work and all associated duties. Make sure you send that message with your actions as well as your words. Emphasize learning, not grades. Grades are important, but more important is the effort that your child puts into school. Take note of your child’s persistence and hard work more than achievements such as grades—and remind your child that learning isn’t always easy. Also, instill in your child the belief that the ultimate goal of school and homework is to acquire knowledge. Children sometimes find school to be difficult, frustrating or even boring, but there are many ways to encourage them to take ownership of school. Embrace these strategies for strengthening your child’s academic engagement, and good things will happen. In the end, you’ll help your child take an active role as a learner—a trait that will serve him or her well in college and long after.

ark Trails Elementary will be participating in Broward Reads for the Record. We will be hosting guest readers to read Quackers to our Pre-K and Kindergarten students . We are looking forward to collaborating with some of our local partners during this event. Park Trails students and parents have been actively collecting household items for residents impacted by the recent hurricanes. We will be donating boxes of items to Mile Marker 50 Relief Project in Key West. On October 4th, our school held a Read for Relief ReadA-Thon and raised $2,300 to donate to the Red Cross to help our neighbors in need. Finally, our Park Trails Principal, Mr. Charles Mccanna,

implemented a new theme for the school year, “Change the World with Kindness”. On September 29th, 2017, Park Trails Elementary students took a pledge to be kind this year. They took this oath in front of their teachers, peers, administration, assistant principals, the Parkland Mayor, school board representatives, and the Parent Teacher Association. After reading the Choose to be Nice pledge, the students signed a banner which will hang in the school as a daily reminder of the promise the students made. The students also received a bracelet and a small tasty treat to acknowledge their commitment. Park Trails is the first school in the state of Florida to adopt the program and we are very excited to watch our children glitter with kindness.

RAMBLEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL T

he start of the school year at Ramblewood Elementary has been very successful. We welcome back Mrs. Maria E. Perez, Principal and we also welcome our new Assistant Principal, Mr. Gregory Charlotin. We have added Planet Fitness, Broward Health, Barnes and Noble, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as our new partners in education. Planet Fitness welcomed back our teachers with fun exercises, dance and prizes, while Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital provided breakfast catered by Einteins Bros. Bagels.

Our PTO members have been very involved during all school events. They hosted a very successful Ice Cream Social in which over 300 parents participated. The aftermath of Hurricane Irma interrupted our educational progress as schools across Broward were closed for seven school days. Thankfully, our staff and community resumed the learning process unharmed. We were happy to see many parents attend our rescheduled Open House nights. We are accelerating full speed ahead and look forward to a wonderful and exciting school year!

SCHOOLS devastated the area. We collected and shipped 1,800 pounds of supplies. Our contributions went to the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District’s Common Threads Program to help families living in a difficult situation due to the recent flooding in their area. Our donations helped many families received the basic necessities needed to help them get back on their feet and back to school. Our school is thrilled to announce that our PTA was selected to be a recipient of the 2017 National PTA Stem and Families Math Grant sponsored by Mathnasium. As a recipient, our school will receive $1000 to host a special Math/STEM event. Congratulations to Ms. Bloch and Mr. Francis!! They have been selected as our instructional and non-instructional employees of the year. Ms. Bloch is one of our 4th Grade teachers and Mr. Francis is our Head Facilities person.

s. Felicia Burgin, 9th grade teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, has partnered with several teachers at Country Hills Elementary to implement Teen Trendsetters. This program is a component of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Several teachers in grades 1 and 2 have paired one or two students with high school students to reinforcement important literacy skills. The parents were given a welcome letter explaining what to expect throughout the year. They also signed a consent form agreeing to have their child participate in the program. Teachers completed an in-take form requiring the students’ start of the year reading data and eventually will include data at the conclusion of the program. Reading materials are also provided through the grant. Per the grant, high

school mentors must meet with their mentees for at least 45 minutes per week. The mentors are trained to facilitate the Teen Trendsetters reading program. The TTS Reading program is 24 sessions. However, the high school students come approximately 32 times throughout the year. Due to the new block schedule at MSD the schedule varies from Tuesday to Wednesday. This is the first year that this program has been integrated into our day. The goal is for this program to be a great experience for all: the Country Hill teachers, the mentors, mentees, and the students. It is most important that the mentees become better readers and achieve a grade-level appropriate reading score. We are so excited about this experience!

HUNT ELEMENTARY SOARS TO GREAT HEIGHTS H

urricane Irma proved once again we are stronger than any storm life presents! It was great to see our community work together in the aftermath of the storm. Our students are working hard academically and becoming better friends and citizens each day. We were excited to participate in Pinwheels for Peace on October 13, 2017. It was great to see students plant their pinwheels and choose to help create a world that spreads kindness to all! This year we have partnered with Coral Springs High School and began our Latinos in Action Mentoring Program. Seventy of our students have been assigned a high school mentor who will read with them weekly. We are excited about the bonds that will be created through this enriching program. We are thankful to be a part of a district who works hard to ensure all students from all backgrounds and

ethnicities achieve at the highest levels! We have so many great things happening in October and November. Our Fall Festival is Wednesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. and our Fall Parade is on Friday, October 27. Our students will also be entertained by Chinese acrobats as part of our SEAS Enrichment Program. Hunt’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon will be on Friday, November 17. It is one of our favorite days of the year as Hunt families enjoy a Thanksgiving lunch with us. We look forward to seeing everyone as we celebrate life and all we have to be thankful for! As we begin to enter the holiday season, we want to wish everyone in the Coral Springs community many blessings and good tidings! Let’s continue to love oneanother and set positive examples for all!

hey looked at the tv in disbelief. “How could there be so much water? What can we do to help these people? The Coral Springs Chargers board members just wanted to do something. This one simple conversation mobilized the entire Coral Springs community to donate as much as they could to help the people in Houston recover after Hurricane Harvey. What started as a conversation between a few soon became the rally call of Coral Springs. The quest spread like wildfire through the help of social media, tv news, word of mouth and online news. The car lines to bring supplies to Mullins Park extended out of the park and kept growing by the hour. This mission began as a thought of bringing one truck of supplies, and soon grew to packing up several U-Hauls. Volunteers consisted of chargers players, their siblings, park visitors and countless others who were sorting supplies and packing the trucks, donating blood, and helping in any way they could. For two evenings straight, the park bustled with volunteers determined to stuff

amblewood Middle School is excited to offer a new CAPE (Career and Professional Education) program for the 2017 – 2018 school year! These elective classes focus on real world business skills, and offer our students the opportunity to become industry certified in the Microsoft Office Suite of programs. This three-year program starts in 6th grade, with students learning touch-typing skills and Microsoft PowerPoint. Each day the students are provided with computers to learn the components of PowerPoint and how to create business related presentations. One of the culminating activities is for the students to present their PowerPoint to their peers and the staff on our campus. In 7th and 8th grade, the students are

the U-Hauls with as many needed supplies as they could. That Friday, the U-Hauls set off for Texas and we knew that Coral Springs did all they could to support fellow Texans. No sooner had the U-Hauls returned that Coral Springs, and the rest of Florida, needed to prepare for our own brush with a natural disaster. Hurricane Irma roared across Florida knocking down trees, electricity and destroying buildings and homes in the Keys and on the west coast. Just like we have in the past, Coral Springs worked together to help our neighbors in our own town and across the state. While still not finished with their own clean up, our Texas neighbors got in their trucks and came to Florida to help us recover from our disaster. They felt they needed to repay the kindness shown to them. While no one wants to experience disaster, it is refreshing to see that our country does come together in times of crisis to help one another. Let’s hope that we keep these lessons close and use them daily rather than just during a major disaster. Here’s to a very boring end of Hurricane season. Cheers!

part of the VE-JV Academy (Virtual Enterprises – Junior Ventures). These students are given the opportunity to develop technological and entrepreneurial skills by starting and managing virtual business ventures. Through this program, they will engage in problem-solving, decision-making and time management skills. Additionally, they will learn about workplace expectations, business etiquette and how to work as a team. The course also focuses on financial literacy and public speaking. Upon completing these three classes, the students will be industry certified in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel, providing them the necessary skills to be work force ready.

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-five years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Clubs have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Alan Strauss, Michael Ramirez, Valerie Wanza, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have gone above and beyond to help our mission,” said Renee. Another distinctive characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

“What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based

on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Renee does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.”

SCHOOLS

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, last year they made over 600 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our schools who are hungry. This year they are on track to surpass 1,200 boxes. Renee and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Publix Charities, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

oral Park Elementary is off to a “KIND” start to the school year. As part of our #chooseKIND initiative, our students and staff are being recognized with “KIND Referrals”. Anyone can write a KIND referral when they catch someone in the act of demonstrating one of the character traits of kindness, citizenship, self-control, tolerance, responsibility, and honesty. Our entire staff is reading the book “Wonder” by R. J. Palacio. A New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences, who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. The staff has been given the challenge of reading the book and passing it on to a student or another adult when they are done reading it. These are just some of the ways we are working to spread “kindness” and we invite our entire Coral Park community to do the same. The beginning of the school year also brings the start to many of our student programs. We have officially kicked off our Play Pal Program, where over 75 third, fourth, and fifth grade students provide peer mentoring to students in

all grade levels who could benefit from additional academic or social support. We have also started our Debate Club. We are looking forward to having our 4th and 5th grade students participate in District competitions. We are in the process of establishing our Student Council and Math Club. These programs provide opportunities for our students to develop and sharpen their leadership and mathematic skills. For our parents, we have formed our School Advisory Council (SAC) and our School Advisory Forum (SAF). We invite our school community to participate in these meetings to provide a parent voice as we collaborate together to make Coral Park be the best it can be for our students. The next meeting is scheduled for November 8th at 7:15 am. We have our first parent make and take workshop planned for November 15, beginning at 6:00 pm. The focus will be on how parents can support their children with math strategies. We are looking forward to an engaging, interactive evening. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

ere at Parkside, our year started on a positive note with our new theme: PARKSIDE – WHERE READING WILL TAKE YOU ANYWHERE. We were happy to welcome new friends to Parkside and getting settled into our routines. Things got interesting when Hurricane Irma threatened and our school was used as a shelter. Our Cafeteria Manager, along with our custodial staff, did an awesome job helping out the folks in our community, and their pets, who needed a safe place to ride out the storm. Our students are working hard with our Art Teacher, to make items that will be sold to raise money to help our neighbors in the Florida Keys who weren’t quite as fortunate as we were. When school opened up again everyone was so happy to be back together. As October began, we offered our students special after-school clubs: Dancing, Cooking, Crafts, Sports, and more. The students really enjoyed themselves and looked forward to staying after school for these fun and educational activities. Our Music Teacher put out a call for anyone who enjoys singing and has created a chorus. Our Parkside singers have been hard at work rehearsing each week. They will be singing at our Holiday Show in December. The month closed on Halloween, with everyone dressed up in their costumes. We all had an awesome time at our annual Halloween parade! We had some really creative costumes as usual…some were scary, some were cute, and some were funny. There was a Halloween dance organized by our fantastic PTA. In late November, we

or the past 12 years, Bright & Smart has been preparing children in South Florida for a technological future through instruction and hands-on engineering projects. Through field trips, afterschool programs, and camps, Bright & Smart brings the tools and technology to the students and teaches them the engineering skills to code and build their creations. From step one to completed project, they can work individually or in teams and learn every aspect while having fun! This year, Bright & Smart has launched an exciting new educational program called Class in a Box that kids can do at home! Class in a Box offers three complete hands-on engineering kits designed for children ages 5 and up. In conjunction with the S.T.E.A.M. curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) kids are able to follow along with video and written instructions to master the lessons. Class in a Box #1 teaches the Basics of 3D Printing, 3D Rendering and 3D Design. The kit includes: building blocks, paper, pencil, and a Bright & Smart USB stick with 3D Design Software. This lesson is engineered to make your child a 3D wiz in just a few hours. Once you learn how to use the software, you will be able to create anything you can imagine. With the included password you will be able to order a 3D print of your design. Only $24.95. Class in a Box #2 teaches kids to build a real Fidget Spinner to use for fun while learning the basics of physics and the laws of motion in a few hours. The Fidget Spinner kit includes: building blocks to build your own spinner, paper, pencil, and the full lesson book with link to video instruction. Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print your own fidget spinner. Only $5.95. Class in a Box #3 teaches the basic skills of Arduino-like boards, microprocessors, and microcontrollers and how to program them to build your very own robot. No soldering, hot elements, or power tools needed! Included in the box

is a lesson manual with link to video instruction, Bright & Smart original designed and manufactured robot parts, Arduino-like board, and pieces to integrate your robot to building blocks! Once you finish this class, you can always check out the Class In a Box #1 Basics of 3D Printing & Design which will teach you how to 3D Design and 3D Print. Using this other Class in a Box, you can design your very own 3D Printable pieces to add onto your robot! Only $54.95. Learn more and purchase your Class in a Box at BrightandSmart.com. Products and Bright & Smart merchandise are also available on Amazon.com. Parents, these are the next generation gifts for your child or children in your lives. It is simply the most fun and educationally rewarding way to introduce children to engineering, 3D Coding and Design, and physics while building abstract thinking and logic, as well as conceptualization. Just as you would introduce your child to sports or activities that may spark a passion they would like to pursue, the same follows for introducing your child to engineering and robotics. Tap into and unleash their natural abilities and watch them flourish in science and technology. Bright & Smart’s Founder and Managing Director, Lucy Tamez, holds a B.S. in Physics Engineering and has dedicated her professional life to physics education. Lucy has devoted her time to research, data gathering, software-licenses procurement, curriculum structure, modeling and field-testing of all materials, techniques, and tools for the portfolios that now make up their courses. This includes materials from the MIT Media Lab, Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, Tufts Center for Engineering, Education, and Outreach. Ongoing afterschool programs, in house field trips and camps may be found all over southeast Florida. Ask them about an introductory class near you!
