Dear Readers, I’m looking forward to a great start this school year. I have one child entering high school and it feels like we are entering into a new world. As parents, we are always peppy in August, with a lot of energy. We have the opportunity to join the PTSO, which I strongly encourage, as well as chances to be room helpers, volunteers and so much more. It’s exciting for our children too, as they meet their new teachers and perhaps even walk into a new school. This is a time our children decide what they can be involved in and choose to do for extracurricular activities. There are opportunities in school and so many choices in the community as well. An active child has a better chance of staying out of trouble. Our children need to participate in something no matter what age they are. From Kindergarten through their senior year, a child needs to have something to do and somewhere to go. Our directory is packed with choices for you and your children. We all know what happens with a child who is not occupied and left at a computer or engaging on social media for hours. The effects can lead to drama, bullying, laziness, and depression. For teenagers, service hours are way to stay involved. You can call the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce to see if they have businesses that may offer service hours to students, and could also have internships. I was able to have an intern work with me this summer from Taravella High School. I hope you enjoy her article on taking college courses in high school on page 53. She even interviewed 3 new Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders who grew up in the North Broward area (See article on page 34.) It was a great experience for me, as a publisher, to train someone interested in this field, and see her grow. She earned her service hours writing articles to promote our area public schools. The city comes alive again in August. The families are back from vacation and the activities begin to take place. Check out the events calendar for you and your family. ach year, the city remembers the victims and honors the heroes of September 11, 2001. On Saturday, September 6, the City is hosting its annual “September 11th Remembrance 5K.” The route will begin at the Northwest Regional Library and head northbound on University Drive. The route will continue on University Drive and loop back at 48th Manor heading south on University Drive, finishing at the 9/11 Memorial. Please note that no bikes, skates or pets are permitted. Participants may pre-register on Active.com. Cost is $25 for adults and $20 for participants 18 and under. Race day registration will begin at 5 a.m. and cost will go up $5. Photo ID is required and only cash will be accepted on race day. Also, you can register to be a volunteer at the race at Active.com   All proceeds go

toward future September 11th Memorial services, future 5Ks and for maintenance of the Memorial site. t is my hope that you are enjoying a relaxing summer. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential. As the Chair of the School Board of Broward County and the Board Member representing District 2, I have had the pleasure of visiting many schools - witnessing first-hand our students enjoying much success. Over 15,000 high school students and 8,300 middle school students participate in organized school system sports. It is exciting to report that fifty percent of our athletes are female. With the recent addition of girls flag football and competitive cheerleading, the school system is a recognized national leader in gender equity, ensuring equal opportunities for our female athletes. Many of our students volunteered countless hours, giving back to their schools

and their communities, demonstrating a true commitment to the betterment of others. This was truly evident by the numerous events held at our schools. Relay for Life events raised funds for cancer research, the DiaBEAT This! event allowed students to have fun and raise funds for diabetes research, and a food-packing event provided 15,000 meals for orphaned/homeless children in the USA. We celebrated many successes in the 2013-14 school year and I would like to thank our dedicated teachers, support staff, school administrators, parents and community partners for making that possible. It is the goal of BCPS to ensure that every student receives the very best instruction in pursuit of becoming a well-rounded individual. As the 2014-2015 school year begins, I look forward to another amazing year as we continue to strive to achieve that goal. Enjoy these last days of summer. I t feels like just yesterday I was

speaking at graduation ceremonies wishing the class of 2014 all the best. It won’t be long before my own little girls walk across the graduation stage with big smiles and even bigger dreams. As a parent, we all want to give our children the best. Great public schools give our students the opportunity to dream. It’s why I began my career as a special education teacher. It’s why I ran for office and it’s why I serve the students of Broward County. I am so proud of Broward County Public Schools and I think you should be, too. Last year 13 of our high schools ranked among the best in the nation and state by US News & World Report. 92% of our high schools received an “A” or “B” rating from the state. We were #1 in the state for the number of high school students earning Advanced Placement Awards, Honors and Distinctions. Our mission at Broward County Public Schools is to educate today’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s world. A world where computer science is a top paying college degree and computer programming jobs are growing at two-times the national average. Last year, we announced a District partnership with Code. org. For the upcoming school year, 22 of our middle schools will be integrating

computer science into math and science classes and 15 of our high schools will offer a new computer science course. We have expanded our robotics curriculum and extracurricular programs. Our students have participated in local, regional and world robotics competitions. We are expanding our Digital 5, personalized 1 to 1 learning program to 25 more elementary schools. We have six new STEM Museum Magnet Elementary Schools and are continuing to expand our SECME STEM Olympiad. These are great achievements that will prepare our students to succeed in tomorrow’s world. I am proud to be a Broward County Public School parent and to send my girls to one of the best school districts in America. Districts across our state have tightened their budgets. Last year we were recognized for having the lowest administrative cost in the state, meaning Broward Schools spends a larger percentage of our budget in the classroom compared to our counterparts. I believe in public education and I believe that each child should be given every opportunity possible to achieve their dreams. Education is a great equalizer and great schools build great communities. I believe in the potential of our students. The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. A Fire Department sponsored program for high school youths, age 14-18, who have an interest in a career in the fire or emergency medical field. Explorers meet every other Sunday to participate in fire training. Once off probation, Explorers ride on actual fire apparatus to real life emergency calls. hree ladies from the Coral Springs and Parkland area will be performing on the sidelines during the home football games as NFL cheerleaders. Adrianna, Alison, and Kaitlin grew up loving cheerleading and dance. They were extremely excited to make the 2014 Miami Dolphins Cheerleading squad. The tryout process was a long and difficult one, going through auditions, interviews and preparing a final one minute choreographed routine. Over 300 girls were in competition for the 40 final spots. Adrianna, who is a “rookie” and is very excited to call herself a Dolphins Cheerleader, has been cheerleading since she was four years old. Her first interaction with the organization was when she performed with the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders during a halftime show for Breast Cancer Awareness. Adrianna attended Mary Help of Christians Catholic School, before going to Pope John Paul for high school, and made the squad while she was still a senior. She is currently one of the youngest on the team, at age 18, and lives in Parkland. “It was definitely the most amazing experience, and I could not stop crying,” Adrianna said. Even though she played lacrosse in her earlier years, she admits cheerleading and dance are her passions. Alison is coming up on her third season as a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader. She danced her whole life and absolutely loves the Miami Dolphins. Her parents are long-time season ticket holders and she has been going to games

ever since she was little. After graduating from the North Broward Preparatory School, she enrolled in a local college to study multimedia. “I am very excited for what the season has to offer. We have a general manager that is new, and a CEO, which joined our organization last September, so we are all looking forward to the first game,” Alison said. She has been selected as one of the co-captains this year. Kaitlin recently graduated from Coral Glades High School, and this year is her first year as a Miami Dolphins Cheerleader. She is also considered a “rookie” among the other cheerleaders. She has been cheerleading since she was five years old and even cheered for the Coral Springs Chargers. At Coral Glades High School she competed with her school’s competition team and cheered for football as well. She currently is a personal training director at a gym. “I’m so happy to have made the squad,” Kaitlin said. “The workouts are very intense, and we learn a lot at each rehearsal. I can’t wait for the season to begin.” These three women will represent Coral Springs and Parkland during all the home Miami Dolphins football games. hen Jessie Bruhn began cheerleading at the of five she never thought it would put her performing in front of thousands of fans and traveling to places she has never seen. Bruhn earned her way onto the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Cheerleading Squad her sophomore year of college, after graduating from Coral Springs Charter High School. “I began cheering at a very young age, and then became a part of school’s cheerleading team from 6th to 12th grade,” Bruhn said. She began working out at Cheer Florida All Stars in Coral Springs. Bruhn worked hard and joined their competition squad. “I traveled and competed through Cheer Florida All Stars all over the state of Florida and even in Texas and Georgia,” Bruhn said. Competing and traveling helped Bruhn have the experience she needed to tryout when she went to UCF. Her size and personality is what had another cheerleader

approach her. Bruhn said when people look at her, they can tell she’s a cheerleader. “When I was a freshman, a UCF Cheerleader noticed my very bubbly personality, and told me I should try out,” said the 100 pound, 4’11’’, Bruhn. “I missed cheerleading, and thought it would be a lot of fun at the collegiate level.” Bruhn went to an open gym class and from there she decided to tryout. “It’s been an amazing experience,” Bruhn said. “Just this year, we went to the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona and then to Paris to compete!” said Bruhn, who traveled out of the country for the first time. Bruhn will be a senior this football season and plans to major in Education, to become a 1st grade teacher. Bruhn compares cheering at college to being on stage. “The football games are crazy, there is nothing like it,” she said. “There is so much energy at the games, and I love the loud crowds. I would encourage any cheerleader to tryout for their college team.”

League Tournament was hosted by North Springs Little League at North Community Park. All Star teams from Coral Springs American, Parkland, Deerfield Beach, Coconut Creek, Ft. Lauderdale and North Springs participated in the tournament. The tournament began on 6/21 and ended with the Championship game on 6/28, between Parkland and North Springs. North Springs won 15-1 against Parkland. North Springs 9/10 went on to then win the Sectional tournament to head to states. The manager of the North Springs team is Denis Rivard and the manager of the Parkland team is Robbie Mays. Congratulations

to the teams, athletes, and coaches. The 10/11 North Springs Allstar team also took the District Championship in a game against Parkland, with scores of 11-3 and 8-7. During the weekend of July 11 and 12, they also clinched the Sectional tournament. The 10/11 North Springs manager is Rob Katz. The North Springs 11/12s (Majors) and Juniors, also won the District Championships in their divisions vs. Ft Lauderdale and Coconut Creek respectively. The managers of those teams are Matt Halprin and Mike Hendrix.

TEEN ONLINE DATING By Dr. David Yudell

s parents, we are well aware that the world is changing around us. Walk into any restaurant and look around. You will see families with their heads angled towards the ground staring atâ&#x20AC;Ś. their phones. It has altered our ability to socialize, make eye contact and engage others. The standard conversation about the weather has been replaced with hashtags, selfies and instagrams. This article focuses on a different concern that has been brought to my attention. Teen online dating. There are 2 main concerns. The first includes a group of teens that meet, interact and socialize with their boyfriend or girlfriend solely through the internet. They often never meet in person. There are both positive and negatives that arise from these relationships. On the positive side they are able to communicate with someone from the safety of their home, which causes much less anxiety. While it provides increased socialization it can similarly cause a false sense of interpersonal connection and intimacy. By attaching to the online persona of their significant other it forms a faulty understanding of what dating is designed to achieve, a personal connection to another individual. The other concern is the increased speed at which the dating relationship progresses due to potential around the clock communication and interaction. In addition the enhanced connectivity has resulted in increased problems. In 2013 the U.S. Department of Justice approved a project by the Urban Institute

which revealed that technological harassment has caused 8.7% of teens to use social networking without permission, 7.8% to engage in sexual acts that they did not want, 6.1% to receive threatening texts and 5.5% to receive so many messages that it made them feel unsafe (www.urban.org). The statistics continue with one clear message. Our youth need to be guided, supervised and sometimes protected from the digital world. The speed at which they are learning and interacting with others has multiplied the dangers they face. So should we throw out all of our smart phones, tablets, computers and other technology until our children become independent adults? That would clearly be an overreaction. Research revealed that only 4% of victims experienced digital abuse and harassment in the absence of other forms of persecution. That tells us that social media and technological communication does not seem to invite new abuse. What it does is provide abusers with new tools. The solution to the problem will be to use technology to educate and provide support. As parents and adults who interact with teens it will be our jobs to look for red flags (changes in behavior, emotional outbursts) and to communicate with our children. t’s a typical Wednesday morning and Jesse, a pointerfox terrier-coonhound mix, along with his mom, Vanessa and sometimes his grandmother, Petra, have arrived an elementary school, complete with their own volunteer badges. Jesse is not your ordinary dog. He and Vanessa are proud members of the Pawsitive Reading Program through Share-A-Pet, a pet therapy organization started in 2003. Jesse and Vanessa are one of 25 human-canine volunteer teams that visit Broward, Palm Beach and a few MiamiDade County elementary schools, so that children can read to a therapy dog, taking advantage of the dog’s natural, unconditional love that they have to offer. According to Executive Director Dr. Bindu Mayi, the program does wonders. She will proudly tell you that being with Jesse, as well as with other dogs in the program, lowers stress levels and anxiety. Children with low confidence or self-esteem, who may feel undeserving, realize they are special when they read to their therapy dog. Dr. Mayi has found that children working with Jesse will begin raising their hand in and participating in class more. They also begin checking books out of the library, and most students improve their reading skills 95-100%. “Recently, I had two third graders receive honor roll awards for the first time since being in the program. Not only did they improve their grades, they also both improved their FCAT Reading scores,” Mayi said. “I brought Jesse to the awards ceremony at request of the students’ mothers. These two third graders didn’t believe they would ever make it on the honor roll, so when the day came for them to get their certificate, Jesse and I were there to congratulate them.” Parent James W., whose son reads weekly with Jesse is amazed with his confidence. “My son finished first grade not reading. We worked with him over the summer to bring his reading up but his

confidence was not there. After working with Jesse, my son is the first one with his hand up in class to read out loud,” he said. Dr. Mayi points out that if a child cannot read, they are more likely to drop out of school. She considers the free service of Pawsitive Reading an ‘essential intervention’ for those students to become productive citizens. Since December, 2003, the Share-A-Pet Organization has certified over 1000 volunteers and have approximately 500 currently active volunteer teams comprised of mostly dogs, but also 2 bunnies. Over time, some pets move away, others become older and their temperaments change, but none are turned away if they are loving, willing, and able to work. Volunteers work in nursing homes, rehab centers, long-term care facilities or children’s hospitals. At The Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, according to Dr. Mayi, the children will whisper secrets to the dogs. The dogs are also wonderful in helping children come out of anesthesia comfortably. Dr. Mayi said that her husband, Share-A-Pet Founder Sachin Mayi, along their Yellow Lab Tenzin, were helpful to a resident, Beatrice, getting out of her nursing home bed for the first time in three years. Beatrice was motivated by wanting to walk the dog. Vanessa, who recently graduated from college and works as a 911 operator, loves being a Pawsitive Reading Volunteer. She said, “I get to be with my Jesse boy, have fun with him and put smiles on faces, all at the same time. Jesse may not know what he has done over the last few years for the people we met and visited with, but everywhere we go he leaves his footprints for all to see and remember…and the occasional white fur.” The Share-A-Pet Organization is always looking for new volunteers. o you ever wonder how you will pay for the high cost of a college education for your child? Is the time getting closer and you are getting nervous about this huge financial burden? The State of Florida has many opportunities for good students to take advantage of earning free college credits while in high school. These credits are not the Advanced Placement classes, which are wonderful, but only grant credit if the student passes the end of the year exam. An average of 66% of the students who take an Advanced Placement class nationwide actually earn the college credit. A more sure fire way to earn college credit is through a program called Dual Enrollment/Early Admission. For example, the percent of students who earn college credit via Dual Enrollment/Early Admission at J.P. Taravella was over 98%. Dual Enrollment is when high school students are dually enrolled at a nearby community college or state university. The cost is free to the parents if the student meets specific criteria. The eligibility criteria is a minimum of 11 high school credits, an unweighted grade point average of 3.0, and meeting the score on either the SAT, ACT or PERT (as decided by the state of Florida). These credits are accepted by all Florida state universities, community colleges, and many other universities (please see individual university rules on accepting Dual Enrollment credits). This also gives students the chance to become familiar with college coursework directly from a college. In addition, students who are in their senior year of high school can spend the whole day at a college to earn credit through another program called Early Admission. This allows the students to earn 24 college credits during their senior year of high school (which is equivalent to a whole year of college).

“The thing to remember is that all of these classes are rigorous and the grades earned will not only go on the student’s high school transcript, but will also go on their college transcript,” said J. P. Taravella High School Guidance Director Jodi Gaver. Students who choose this money saving program must be mature, hard working, and conscientious for it to have a positive result for both the student and the parent. All students who meet the eligibility criteria are accepted into this program as long as they meet the deadlines set by the local college and their high school. “It is possible for a student to graduate high school with 1-2 years of college already completed. If you pair this with some Advanced Placement credits, half of a student’s 4 year college education is free,” Gaver said. “Another benefit to the students is time. In today’s world where many of our students not only earn a 4 year degree but they pursue a graduate degree, being able to shave a year off of this 4 to 8 year process is a huge benefit.” In order for students to be ahead of the game and save money for their parents, they must walk into high school preparing for these programs by working hard to keep their grade point average (GPA) up and preparing themselves for the college placement tests they will need to pass. As we say goodbye to our summer days of bowling, skating and lazy days at the beach, we look forward to Science Fair, Reading Challenges, Field Day and more. Over the summer, many students enjoyed Imagineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very own EDGE (Environmental Science Design and Visual Arts Gardening and Horticulture Engineering and Mathematics) Adventure Summer Camp. The Edge Adventure is a hands-on camp that incorporates nature and animals into a truly engaging and fun learning experience. In addition to taking care of the many animals that call Imagine home, students enjoyed field trips to the Museum of Science, Bedners Farm, Palm Beach Zoo and the Fishing Hall of Fame. Take Learning to the Next Level at Forest Hills Elementary

e are ready to meet and greet our parents during two open houses. August 27 grades 3 – 5 have an Open House at 6:30pm for parents, and September 3 grades PreK – 2 will have Open House at 6:30pm. The Open House is to hear about the curriculum for the school year and to find out how you can become involved in your child’s education. As the year centers around a Safari theme,”Wild About Learning”, our school will be incorporating ‘Digital 5’ for our 5th grade students. Each 5th grader will receive a Lenovo laptop to use at school and at home for the school year. The goal is to maximize student learning by allowing students to control the pace, place and path of their instruction. “Aligning our curriculum to prep students for college and career readiness is a school goal and a District goal for students from grades K-12,” Principal Rothman said. “Everything is computer based and we are focusing on tailored instruction. Our teachers are ready to use this technology to communicate with students.” As the 5th graders work with laptops, the 3rd and 4th graders will also be using Lenovo’s in our Jr. Quantum program to transition into having all of their books and

work done online. Students will be able to incorporate their real-world techniques for gathering web-based research and data into their classroom experience. Fee-based clubs are also being added into the afterschool clubs program. Students can sign up for Martial Arts, Cheerleading, Dance, and Fitness. “We’re trying to be a one-stop-shop for busy parents!” says Roel Heimmermann, PTO President. eschester Elementary is off to a great start. The theme for the year is “Knowledge is my Superpower”. The focus for learning will be centered around the growth of knowledge for each young superhero on campus. The expansion of the ‘Digital 5’ program to the 4th grade is an exciting change for the school. All 4th and 5th grade students will receive a school laptop to use for the entire year. Teachers and students will incorporate blended learning through traditional textbooks and digital programs. The digital devices, with the Digital 5 program, allow students to access digital resources, online instructional materials and other tools to maximize their learning and engagement. Parental involvement is always important. The school welcomes all parents to attend the Open Houses being held on September 10 and

September 17. Each student will bring home the information with the date and time to attend. HONORS PROGRAM FOR HUNT ELEMENTARY By Principal Lazano

e are excited to welcome our students to the 2014 – 2015 school year. This year we are implementing the new Florida Reading and Math standards. With increased rigor and more cognitive demands on our students, we are ramping up our curriculum to ensure their success. Our Hunt PTO plans many events throughout the year and works hard to raise funds to enhance our arts and instructional programs. This year we are implementing Junior Quantum classes at every grade level. Honors Program is an academically rigorous,

high achieving program that will challenge driven students to rise above as they learn demanding content in all curricular areas. We held our annual Open House on Friday, August 15, where students picked up schedules and met all of their teachers. The 2014-2015 school year will bring some exciting changes at Forest Glen Middle School. We have added the Honors Academy, an innovative program, to the fall schedule. This program will serve high achieving, motivated, and focused students much like our Pre-Quantum Leap (PQL) program. The students will have a challenging curriculum, which will provide learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to our new program we have added a number of new courses, clubs and sports. This fall students have the opportunity to take several new high school level courses and earn high credit. These courses include Biology I Honors, Debate I Honors, and Medical Skills (the first course of the Fire Academy Program). New clubs for 2014-15 are Poetry Club, Ocean Environmental Club, and Crime watch. We are also very excited to be bringing back Flag Football and Volleyball to Forest Glen. e are very excited to have earned an A grade once again. We plan to continue our tradition of excellence in academic, physical, and social development for all of our students. In addition, Sawgrass Springs will be starting the 2014 - 2015 school year with some new programs and offerings. The creation of the Scholar Program for high school / college readiness will allow our high achieving students a rigorous academic slate of classes which has the potential to add up to 8 high school credits by the time they complete 8th grade. This track will provide the ability for students to take more college credits in high school. The Scholar Program will be offered to incoming 6th grade students who have qualifying scores on the FCAT for the 2014 - 2015 school year. In addition to rigorous and relevant core subject area courses, we are excited to offer a high school credit Italian course for the first time. We

will continue to offer our students a wide variety of elective courses as well: Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Yearbook, Art, Drama, Peer Counseling, Technology, Eco-Edventures (Environmental Science), TV Broadcasting, Physical Education, Spanish, and Student Leadership Development Corps (SLDC) which is the middle school version of Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). As usual, I urge all parents to be heavily involved in their child’s education. We have the Pinnacle Gradebook program which helps students keep up with grades. Parent conferences are always welcomed and encouraged, especially for our new 6th graders. We also recommend working with your child on life skills such as organization and time management. These are skills that are learned and middle school is a great place to solidify good habits.

nother summer has quickly come and gone and we are ready for a new school year. We hope all of our families were able to spend some quality time with their children either traveling, going to the park, swimming, playing games or cuddling up and reading a great book. This vacation was earned for our staff and students as they worked extremely hard during the 2013-14 school year. Parkside’s theme for the 2014-15 school year will be “Discover Parkside, Where Learning is Natural.” This theme will encompass many different aspects from focusing on our environment and the Everglades to giving students the opportunity to learn through projects, technology, many genres of literature, hands on activities and exciting field trips. Make sure you take a moment and stop by our cafeteria to see the beautiful mural Ms. Mastrianni painted tying into our theme. It gives our café a peaceful and relaxing feel. We are very excited to be participating in the Digital 5 initiative for the 2014-15 school year. This program will provide all of our 5th grade students and teachers with laptops. Our students will be accessing their textbooks online and teachers will be delivering instruction through technology. This initiative was rolled out in Broward

County during the 2013-14 school year to a few of the elementary schools. This year we are fortunate to be a part of the second phase. Our goal, over the next few years, is to continue to update and increase the amount of technology here at Parkside. The upcoming year has many fun and exciting activities planned. Some of the activities include an author visit and book signing from Andrew Toffoli, Boosterthon Fun Run, annual Halloween Parade, Parent training events and so much more. Please make sure you get involved with our PTA as they are responsible for many of these activities for our students. This is an easy and fun way to become active in your child’s school and meet some great individuals. he City of Coral Springs welcomes two new principals and Parkland announces one new principal. The principals were interviewed over the summer and began their positions on July 1.

Coral Springs Elementary is proud to have Principal Vonda Oliver begin the year with them. As an Assistant Principal, Mrs. Oliver helped to open Broward county’s first PreK - 8th grade Montessori Magnet School, Beachside Montessori Village in Hollywood. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as a principal in the city of Coral Springs. The school just added a 6th grade this year, before becoming a PreK-8 program by 2016. One of the visions this year is to implement enrichment clusters for students on early release days. “Our students will be exposed to extra curricular activities such as art, music, etc.,” said Oliver. Additionally, our 2nd and 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to participate in the First Move Program. First Move teaches critical and creative thinking skills through chess. Mrs. Oliver will also continue their fun Family Nights to bridge the gap between home and school. Finally, she has committed to holding Principal Chats with parents, offering them the opportunity to come in for informal conversations on topics of various interests. “The energy is here!” Oliver added. “I can’t wait to meet my children.”

Riverglades Elementary gives an official welcome to Principal Joanne Seltzer. Seltzer was the interim principal since last year, and was previously awarded Broward County Assistant Principal of the Year. “I’m just thrilled to be an official part of an amazing school and community,” Seltzer said. “We will focus on increasing the technology within the school and the collaboration with our incredible PTA.” The school’s unique philosophy of Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) integrates Life Skills to create a common language to develop responsible citizens. ITI also aligns with standards, problem solving, and critical thinking, while creating a positive environment in every classroom. The theme for the year is ‘Stepping into the Future’; a phrase that fits perfectly with a shoe passion of the new principal, and one that focuses on preparing students for the next level.

Ramblewood Middle School announced Principal Cory Ann Smith as their new leader. Mrs. Smith was an assistant principal at Coral Springs High School for 8 years, so she knows the area and community well. She plans to enhance the current S.T.E.M. program to include the arts, renaming it S.T.E.A.M. The areas of study will be: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. “After researching the wonderful programs at RMS, is was a great fit to include the arts as the additional area of study,” Principal Smith said. “My vision is to continue the collaboration within our zone and market our programs at each level.” The school is adding two sections of Culinary classes to work with J.P. Taravella High School, and the Orchestra teacher from Taravella will come to Ramblewood in the mornings to work with the middle school students. Some students will have the opportunity to begin their day at Taravella for Chorus and ROTC and then come back to Ramblewood to finish their day. “There are so many possibilities for students, as the elementary, middle and high schools work together,” Smith said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
