S

ince 2001, American Top Team of Coconut Creek has been training athletes in the community as well as elite fighters from around the globe. The American Top Team concept was co-founded by Master Ricardo Liborio and Master Conan Silveira, both of who have received their Black Belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Master Carlson Gracie. American Top Team has grown to 39 gyms, five Level 3 academies, five Level 2 academies and 10 Level 1 academies across the country. Master Liborio and Master Silveira personally hold many national and international titles. Among others, Master Liborio was inducted into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He holds his Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a member of the North American Grappling Association Hall of Fame (NAGA). Voted “Top 100 Coaches in MMA” by UFC Magazine in 2012, Master Silveira has the credit of being the first Carlson Gracie Black Belt to open a school in the United States. American Top Team continues to earn titles for Masters Liborio and Silveira. American Top Team was declared “Best MMA Gym in Florida” at the 2012 Florida MMA Awards and since 2000; the grappling team has been voted Best Grappling Team in Florida by NAGA. Most recently on December 6, 2014, Robbie Lawler, a Parkland resident who has been training with American Top Team Coconut Creek for two years, won the UFC Welterweight title. Lawler brought home the first UFC title for the gym. At 20,000 square feet, their location off Lyons and Johnson is currently the largest martial arts gym in Florida. The gym, which offers a variety of disciplines, is fully staffed with a team of 10 certified Black Belt instructors for the Adult, Teen and Children’s classes. Parents can bring their children to train with World Champion fighters at American Top Team, Coconut Creek in their award winning kid’s classes. The gym also features a separate team of 15 professional coaches training the Pro-Team and representing the best in the Mixed Martial Arts field gathered anywhere in the world. In the summer of 2015, American Top Team of Coconut Creek will be setting a new record by opening the doors to their new 40,000 square foot facility to be

located at 5750 N. State Road 7, near the Sawgrass Expressway and 441. The new facility, which will be double the square footage of the original gym, will feature 32,000 square feet on the first floor with multiple fighting rings and mats as well as a cardio room and a weight room. The upstairs area will provide housing for fighters who have come to American Top Team to train for the UFC or other highlevel competitions. The new second floor dormitory will allow fighters to train, eat and sleep on site. The new American Top Team facility will remain home to and train many of the current top UFC fighters in the world and it will continue to reflect a family friendly environment. The innovative center, just as the location off Johnson has been, will be open to the public and will offer a well-balanced and varied curriculum accessible to those of all skill levels and ages. Beginners through advanced athletes are welcome, from ages three and up. The new site will offer kids martial arts classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kickboxing as well as an Afterschool program and Summer Camp. Adult classes will be offered in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA and Fitness. In the almost 14 years American Top Team has been in Coconut Creek, the new building will be their first freestanding facility built specifically for their own needs ensuring no amenity has been overlooked. The owners and staff have gone to great lengths to ensure the gym maintains its reputation as the pinnacle training facility for both active families as well as professional MMA fighters. General Manager Richard Guerriero explains, “It’s an incredible environment to learn and train in. All the instructors on staff have been with us for a long time and have many years of training and teaching under their belt. We have multiple instructors per every kid’s class, ensuring they will not be overlooked.” The new American Top Team will open late spring of 2015. Until then, please visit the location at 4631 Johnson Road, Coconut Creek. For a full list of class schedules or for more information about programs offered at the gym, please visit www.AmericanTopTeam.com or call (954) 425-0705.

Heads Up on Concussions C

oncussion. What was once a word mostly associated with professional athletes has now become a worry for parents of athletes of all ages. A concussion is a type of traumatic head injury that changes the way the brain normally works. But how do you know what is considered “normal” for your kids brain? You don’t know …unless you get a Baseline Concussion Testing done prior to any head injury. John Bock, a Parkland resident who also played for the NFL and now a FXFL (semi-pro league) coach who still finds time to assist in coaching for recreational youth football, knows first-hand the long term effects of concussions. He has become a proactive parent in making sure that his kids (who are all in youth sports) receive a baseline testing as part of their annual physical. “When playing sports, it is just as important to have a physical of the ‘mind’ as it is of the body,” said Bock. While it is not yet a requirement, it is up to the parents to include this in their physical said Bock, whose 11-year-old daughter suffered from a concussion during cheerleading. “While initially she seemed fine, she later experienced a mental block,” said Bock. But with her baseline concussion in place prior to her injury, doctors were able to analyze her “normal” cognitive condition and gauge the severity of her post injury condition. This allowed doctors to treat her according to her progress and allowed them to determine when Brooke reached full recovery –something that would have been difficult to do without the baseline testing. She returned quickly to the sport she loves-competitive cheerleading. The pre-concussion baseline test (known as the ImPACT test) is a computerized test which is administered by a trained professional. It takes about 25 minutes and gathers information to measure cognitive function in different categories. In the event of a head injury, the results of the pre-ImPACT concussion test are compared with follow-up tests. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends this as a pre-

season test every year for kids 10-12 years-old and every two years for ages 13 and older—in particular for those participating in contact sports such as football, lacrosse, hockey, soccer, basketball, cheerleading and gymnastics. While this is a growing concern with limited screening and treatment programs available, the Concussion Care Program at Broward Health Coral Springs is the only one of its kind in Broward County. The community now has access to comprehensive services for sports and concussion diagnosis and management by an expert team of partnering physicians. The Broward Health Urgent Care centers offer baseline concussion testing for $15 and a complete physical & EKG for $65. Staffed by credentialed impact consultants, the Concussion Care Program also includes vestibular rehabilitation(a therapy designed to reduce symptoms of dizziness and visual disturbance) as well as outreach educational programs for coaches and youth & community sports leagues in addition to opportunities to speak to parents(and parent groups). For more information about concussion management, please contact Broward Health at 954-344-3180.

n the beginning of every year, it is always a great time to make our New Year’s resolutions. We made ours to do better, with eating smarter, exercising more, volunteering, helping family members, and all that good stuff. It makes us feel good to write the list of things that will improve our lives. Well, here it is February, and we haven’t really gotten the first resolution in gear. But, when it comes to using better, safer, and more effective everyday household products, we find this to be number one on our list. At “Mom’s Creating Financial Freedom”, we have found products that are naturally derived; free of bleach, ammonia, harsh chemicals and toxins. Excellent products that are better than the grocery store brands in every way. These products not only helped our health, but it gave us a reason and a purpose to help other families with theirs. As we started using the products and saw the difference it made in our lives we became passionate about them. So we started sharing the information with our families and friends. We then started to spread the word with people outside of our immediate circle, and that is how we Mom’s came together. It has been over three years that we have been sharing this information at free workshops, local events, and on a personal level, and it has been very successful. Now, Mom’s Creating Financial Freedom has decided it would be a great idea to

share this with the families from our local schools. We are inviting parents, who seek better, safer, and more effective products to reach out to us so that you too can benefit and improve your health with over 350 products at your fingertips. We are helping them switch out the dangerous store brands, for safe and effective green alternatives while staying on a budget. Many enjoy being our customers, not only for the healthier products, but also for the 100% money back guarantee and other perks and benefits. We don’t know of any other manufacturer that offers that!!! Many who wish to increase their income while working from home, have joined our team to build a part time or full time business. We train parents throughout Broward County, to share our tips for living a greener, cleaner life with others. Becoming part of our team means you will always have the guidance from our corporate office along with the support of like minded individuals who have a common goal of enhancing the lives of those we touch by helping people reach their goals. Are you ready to partner with a billion dollar company that has been around for almost 30 years? Are you ready to experience peace of mind, of having a recession proof income? Are you searching for simple changes to positively impact your family forever? Reach out to us at “Moms Creating Financial Freedom” for a schedule of our free workshops, and let’s make 2015 memorable!

FAMILY HEALTH By Dr. David Yudell

B

y the time this article is published there will be numerous news cycles that have occurred with horrifying stories. As I type, I am reminded of the more current ones that include police attacks, college rampages, terrorist events, cyber attacks and civil unrest. A news cycle is defined as the amount of time that passes between the reporting of one story followed by the reporting of the next major story. I have found this to be important when it comes to helping children because if we wait a moment or take a pause - the cycle will pass. We can all become over focused on the news. The coverage by television news is gripping and the delivery options (tablets, phones, streaming tickers) are endless. The rule that I share with the parents I work with is, Answer what your child asks you. This can get complicated with follow up questions, uncomfortable topics and our own feelings of stress or fear. Put simply, if your child is asking then it is already in their minds. Who better to give them an answer than someone in their family? There is a distinct difference between how we (adults) process information and how children process information. Adult brains are able to comprehend and rationalize at a higher, more developed level. Taking that one step further, something that we see on the news can become troubling and a topic of conversation

with our spouse, neighbors and co-workers. The question I pose to you is this – If we are troubled by the news, isn’t it plausible that our children are frightened? Frightened children are then vulnerable for a large array of difficulties ranging from behavioral problems to academic deficiencies. The best defense is to be aware of what we are watching, saying and sharing in the presence of our children. As they get older it becomes less of a concern. Until then, be selective and always remain aware. Turn off the screen (computer, tablet, television, video games) and continue to teach your children the morals and values that you find important. Spend time with them and teach them about the world they interact with on a daily basis rather than the one that they will likely only hear about and see images of. Before you know it, the news cycle will pass. There is no denying that we live in a different world. The advancements will help our children communicate with each other and connect on a level that we are merely scratching the surface of. The more you guide your children along the way, the more successful they will be when it comes time to join the world around them. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. In Life There’s Hope Jessica Shuler, Former Broward County Teacher/Life Coach for Kids/Task Force for Suicide Prevention

#

everyoneslifematters! Statistics show that every 13.7 minutes there is a suicide in the United States and every 32 seconds there is an attempted suicide. The World Health Organization believes that suicide will surpass heart disease by the year 2020. These frightening statistics do not begin to explain the devastation to those affected by them. Our community has lost too many lives for us to keep responding to suicide in the same manor, without exploring new ways of combating this epidemic. A Task Force for Suicide Prevention has had several conversations led by former Mayor Scott Brook, exploring what solutions exist and what we can implement to prevent suicides and save so many more precious lives. Our community has begun this new conversation because a lot of people have been impacted by suicide or suicidal attempts. Those contemplating suicide continue to hide in the shadows due to the stigma associated with disorders affecting their brain and therefore do not get the help that can save their lives. Having open conversations regarding suicide is part of the solution to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. Another one of our goals is to have Hope Clubs in all of our Middle and High Schools. Hope Clubs are a multi-dimensional curriculum teaching teens how to

CALL TO ACTION!

overcome problems effectively, understand they can be solved and that they do not need to become hopeless and helpless resulting in the feeling that suicide is the only option to their pain. Jackie Rosen, Executive Director/CEO of The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention has already created these groups in JP Taravella, Coral Springs and Stoneman Douglas High Schools and Coral Glades High is planning on implementing a Hope Club in the near future. As part of our community commitment we believe that one of the most important things is to educate and transform the stigma and therefore changing the willingness and ability for treatment. It is important to learn about the brain and realize that both chemical and physical changes take place, making it is no different from any other disease. There are 5 questions one should ask if you suspect someone is depressed or contemplating suicide. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Ask them the following:

How are you doing? Are you thinking of hurting yourself? Ask them directly, “Are you thinking of suicide?” Do you have a plan? Do you have what you need to carry out the plan? Have you chosen when you will carry out the plan?

We as a community have a humongous job to do! We invite you to join our Community Conversation on Monday, February 23rd at 5:30 pm in the JP Taravella Media Center. Be a part of the solution and possibilities in saving lives. All age groups are invited! For more information please call Bonnie Halima Gibson at 954-684-6551 or Arlene Longo at 954-757-5551.

e are pleased to announce that Westchester Elementary will offer after school enrichment programs. Our enrichment clubs will provide children with culturally enriching programs that promote physical, intellectual, emotional and social development in a safe and nurturing environment taught by certified Westchester teachers. This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn about new and exciting topics. This program helps students get involved outside of school while actually having fun while learning. We will begin our after school

clubs in February 2015. This is our Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP). We will offer a variety of clubs for a small fee. Each club will have eight sessions. We will offer activities such as dance, cooking, technology, drama, science, Lego, etc. Westchester is very excited to be able to provide these motivating classes for our students. There’s no better place than Westchester’s after school program to create this experience. Look for registration information on our school website: www.broward.k12.fl.us/westchestelem in mid January.

he New Year brings lots of learning and excitement to Imagine School at Broward in Coral Springs. Students in VPK through 8th grade are very busy with both academics and extracurricular activities. The safety of our students is also a priority at our school. Acceptance, good citizenship and understanding of our unique differences is something that is infused within the school curriculum as well. Fifth grade students celebrated at their G.R.A.D.E. graduation. Coral Springs Police Officer and a parent of two Imagine students, Shawn Burst, led students through the G.R.A.D.E. program which teaches about responsibility, internet safety and making good choices. The winners of the essay contest also shared their essays and received special awards. Project Safe Child was a presentation for the 5th and 6th graders presented by the US Attorney General’s Florida Office focusing on cyber bullying and Internet safety. In February the 6th graders will also take part in Project Sentry, teaching them to steer clear of gangs and related activity. The Middle School students spent first period and lunch time getting to know

each other during Mix it Up Week, part of a national initiative where students learn about others and open their minds to the differences we all bring to this world. Student “Peer Counselors” were trained in many different activities to promote acceptance and diversity. After lots of fun and interactive activities, they made new friends and learned that although they are all different and unique, they are the same! The Media Center has lots of great news to report. Thanks to the creativity and dedication of the school’s media specialist, Linda Rosen, the school was recognized in the 2015 National Scholastic Spring Ideas Guidebook for best idea! The Piñata Party and Cactus Lollipop fundraiser during the Book Fair raised funds to purchase 352 books for Kids in Distress. Additionally, five students have already completed the Imagine Schools Advanced Reading Challenge by reading 25 books and completing 25 projects! Enrollment information for the 2015-16 academic year can be found on the school’s website at www.imaginebroward.org or by calling (954) 255-0020.

ark Springs Elementary is having a fantastic year full of learning, fun and new challenges! Congratulations to Park Springs Elementary students, staff and parents for our continued success earning an “A” in the Governor’s A+ Accountability Plan during the 2013-2014 school year! Our theme this year: “Are you Smarter than a PSE Panther?” continues to challenge our staff and students to strive for and achieve a high standard of excellence for our school. Park Springs is proud to be part of the Junior Quantum Leap Program, which is designed to provide students with a challenging curriculum in preparation for attending Forest Glen Middle School’s Pre-Quantum Leap Program. We are also excited about the hands on Project-Based Learning we have at PSE, which allows our students to explore real world problems and challenges and develop critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and presentation skills. Park Springs is having their Kindergarten Round Up on February 13 at 8:30 a.m., so if you have a little one ready to enter Kindergarten for the 2015–2016 school year, please join us to find out more about our wonderful school and take a tour! March 17, 18 and 19 will bring us Field Day events, one of our students’ favorite yearly activities! PSE recognizes the importance of healthy bodies to support all that brainpower and Coach Champa does an amazing job of not only organizing this great event but also preparing the students during their weekly PE classes for all the different races and activities. Park Springs is also fortunate to have an active PTO that runs and supports many programs throughout the year to benefit our students and staff. Thanks to our parents and

students, we had another successful Thanksgiving Food Drive that benefited many families during the holiday. We also had a new adventure with Winterfest this year by going to The Promenade to enjoy an outstanding performance by our chorus and recorder ensemble led by Mr. Levitan. We are working with Ms. Jimenez to bring you another great Book Fair the week of February 9th–13th! This will afford the opportunity for our students and families to be ready for spring and summer reading by purchasing current titles geared to our elementary readers. There will be two evenings available for parents to come with their students to the Book Fair; Tuesday, February 10th and Wednesday, February 11th. The PTO is also currently preparing for the Annual School Carnival on March 14th from 12pm – 4pm. Everyone is invited to enjoy an afternoon of fun playing games, winning prizes, bouncing and sliding! We are actively seeking volunteers to help with this event. Please contact the PTO by emailing parkspringspto@yahoo.com. If you would like to learn more about Park Springs Elementary or schedule a tour to see our Panther Pride, you can contact us at 754-322-7750 or visit our website at http://parksprings.browardschools.com/.

uring National Code Week, Forest Hills Students learned computer programming that involved critical thinking skills, engineering and mathematics. Students were so excited to actually write their own computer programs. “I am very proud of the students! Computer Science is one of the fastest growing fields in America and will need future Forest Hills students to fill these high paying jobs,” said Jennifer Reid, STEM teacher. To continue their academic studies, students were given a Principal’s Challenge during winter break to access from home called “I-Ready.” This is an Internet based reading and mathematics program. The students were rewarded for their extra efforts with a bounce house and snow cones! Over the last few months some amazing speakers have been at Forest Hill’s STEM Assemblies that are held once a week. There have been marine biologists, water educators, scientists, engineers and even a former Forest Hills student that is now becoming a doctor! This past January, the “Amazing Critters” Educational Show was provided by the Discovery Museum of Science for grades 2-5 and a special whale presentation from a Retired Educational Director at the NY Aquarium. Forest Hills recently won the LOWES Garden Grant and will be looking for

volunteers to help with their exciting garden projects. Please email Miss Reid at Jennifer.reid@browardschools.com if you would like to volunteer for our school garden improvement committee this spring. Forest Hills is referred to as “A jewel of a school” by Mr. Heimmermann, PTO President. He has been busy getting the word out that we are a “One stop shop!” In addition to the monthly clubs (chess, chorus, guitar, hands-on algebra, news team, planeteers, robotics, safety patrols, student government and yearbook) offered to students, they also provide an opportunity for fee-based businesses who provide their services right here on campus. These enrichment programs include cheerleading, martial arts, and coming soon - Mind Lab and Zumba Kids. Parents are excited to have this opportunity for their children. “Wow! I am thrilled with everything Mrs. Rothman has done for my daughter and this school! She and the teachers have gone the extra mile to educate her and they also offer extended learning opportunities for her social growth with afterschool clubs,” said Mrs. Lewis, parent. Forest Hills is an Innovative Program School and welcomes all Broward County K-5 students to enroll with us. No waiting lists! For more information, call the school’s office at (754) 322-6400.

hat is middle school life like? At Sawgrass Springs Middle School there is a lot going on. The sports teams are in full swing with the fall schedule ending and the winter and spring sports taking place. Broward County Schools added flag football and volleyball into the middle schools this year, along with the current basketball, cheerleading, track and soccer teams. “I love to see all the activities going on after school for kids,” said Larry Bremner, Social Studies Department Head. “It’s great to see an active campus and students participating in all kinds of practices and rehearsals.” Along with sports, SSMS offer several clubs for students. There is FFEA (Florida Future Educators of America), SADD, Students Government, NJHS, Book Club, First Priority, Tennis club and a Nature Club. “As a club sponsor, you see the students in a one on one situation with their peers in a relaxed and

T

fun atmosphere,” said Scott Kashdin, Science teacher and Gator Tennis Club coach. “Working with kids in something they are passionate about is positive and rewarding.” There are plenty of academic opportunities for students to shine in too. Students can enter the Science Fair, the Literacy Fair, and the Knowledge Bowl; participate in the Week of the Ocean, the Foreign Language Competition, or try the annual Spelling Bee. SSMS even has an 8th grade History Fair. “We want to offer something for every child, and we do that here,” Principal James Cecil sad. Congratulations to the Teacher of the Year Ms. Gil and the non-instructional employee of the year Ms. Shaw. Building Future Leaders through the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce Education Committee

he Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce has created an amazing partnership with the high schools in Coral Springs and Parkland through a committee of hard working volunteer business leaders and educators from the high schools. This program is dedicated to the development of our future leaders through the watchful eye of the Coral Springs Education Foundation. Chaired this year by Shirley Klein, Chamber member and Realtor with Coldwell Banker, the Foundation is in constant contact with the educators of the high schools in our area to determine opportunities in which our outstanding community leaders can assist. DECA and BPA programs prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, management and technology. (www.deca.org and www.bpa.org) Each year, the students choose a project and through community leader involvement, the interactions have ranged from activities such as: mock interviews, a shark tank panel experience in which students could “pitch” the business leader sharks and even a branding project where the students took on local businesses to help with logo design and a marketing planning efforts. After performing at a local level and based on competitive organizational performance measurements, students can move on to regional and national level. Travel expenses and associated costs for these competitions can add up quickly. Over the last several years, the Coral Springs Chamber through the efforts of the Ambassadors and the Leadership Institute fundraising efforts, were able to assist our 5 high schools with much needed funds for the DECA and BPA programs. In fact, in the last couple of years Coral Springs High School, Coral Glades High

School, Coral Springs Charter High School, J.P. Taravella High School and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have been awarded over $20,000 from the Coral Springs Chamber Education Foundation to help minimize costly expenses for the DECA and BPA competitions. “This program is one of the most valuable give back programs we have in our area as it fosters the development of future leaders alongside current successful business leaders in our community. It’s an amazing effort that continues to grow each year,” said Cindy Brief, President of the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce. Just another great story we bring to our community that all of us can be proud to know takes place in nurturing the future leaders of Coral Springs.

iverglades Elementary was busy during the holiday season. Our Outreach committee organized our annual food drive. Riverglades donated over 85 Thanksgiving dinners to families in need. We also participated in the Toy Drive for Camelot Community Center. Riverglades families and staff have a strong belief in community service and know the importance of giving back. Our Kindergarten students and families gathered to build gingerbread houses at our annual Gingerbread Night. New toys were collected for Camelot Community Center. Students also brought in coins to use in an exchange system to purchase decoration items for their gingerbread houses and practice math skills through real world connections. The proceeds were given to the Humane Society. Riverglades students and staff closed out 2014 with our annual lunchtime Holiday Sing Along. Under the direction of our music teacher, David Hammer, holiday tunes from Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza could be heard echoing from our cafeteria. This is an annual tradition that students, staff and parents look forward to each year. In January, visiting author, Jeff Savage, presented his sports stories and the importance of writing to all our students. On February 13th, it’s Riverglades PTA’s annual show of heart-filled appreciation for our staff - Riverglades Staff Valentine’s Treat

Day. Nothing is sweeter than showing our Riverglades staff a little love (and giving some goodies too) to how much they mean to us. Also on the 13th, our students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart. This is a great event supporting the American Heart Association, getting our kids active and having fun giving back. At the end of the month, Team Riverglades is in full swing with the Relay For Life Coin Drive, February 23rd – 27th. You can help continue to fight cancer by collecting all of your spare coins and bringing it in with your child. Every little bit counts and can make a big change!

Great Things Are Happening T

at Ramblewood Elementary!

he multi-talented students at Ramblewood Elementary are going for 3. Mrs. Bachmann’s 4th and 5th grade Art Club will be submitting their entry for this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Visual Arts Competition. The Art Club has won Best in Show in the group category for the past 2 years, and is now hoping for win #3. This year’s theme is: “Celebrating 25 Years – A Symphony of Dreams.” The Art Club students collaborated on creating their spectacular sculptures to reflect on Dr. King’s ideology and this year’s theme. The Ramblewood Elementary Chorus is a group of 55 fifth grade students who meet twice a week after school to focus on singing technique, performance fundamentals, and performance collaboration. Recently, these students had their first performance in our winter musical, “Bring On the Snow!” In only sixteen short rehearsals these students learned staging, choreography, character development, stage and prop design, costume design, as well as

learning 7 original songs. Throughout this process, they also learned how to collaborate and work together to put on a show along with how much effort it takes to put on a full performance. On Saturday, December 6th, 2014 Ramblewood Elementary hosted a robotics tournament for FIRST Lego League teams from all over Broward County. It was the first weekend of qualifying tournaments in the state of Florida. 10 teams competed in 3 categories: Core Value (Teamwork), Project Presentation, and Robot Design. Students shared innovative ideas to improve the learning process for learners of all types and ages. 3 of the 10 teams will continue their season onto the regional tournament level. Our own 2 teams are getting prepared to compete in the January tournaments. We already won 1st place for our project this year at a pre-qualifying tournament in November. With a whole lot of skill and a little luck, we hope to compete against the best and earn our place at the next level of competition.

Backstage just before show time! Students are excited and nervous about their first show!

Stoneman Douglas DECA

Makes a Difference in the Community his year, Stoneman Douglas DECA has supported two chapter projects. The first one, “It Starts with Us,” is part of a public-relations effort to support acts of kindness within the community. The chapter has participated in this project by donating pasta, rice, books and socks to a shelter known as The Spring, collecting a total of 2,022 items. DECA members also hosted a teacher appreciation breakfast at Stoneman Douglas High School with food, raffles and prizes. Students have organized a Thanksgiving lunch at the New Life (Archdiocese of Miami) shelter in Miami. In the social media aspect of the project, the chapter began doing nomination challenges, loosely based off of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This challenge urges people to perform random acts of kindness and post about it on their Twitter or Facebook pages. The first event that this project hosted was a “Shark Tank” themed challenge. In this simulation, DECA students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges who reviewed their ideas and provided feedback on their presentations. Students presented a variety of products and services from a maid service to head-up display systems. Over 200 students, business partners, and community members

attended and watched these presentations. The second event that this chapter project did, ROILS, which stands for “Return on Investment Learning Simulation” also served to promote entrepreneurship skills within students. ROILS’ goal is to educate chapter, school and community members about the skills needed and the opportunities available in order to become an entrepreneur. Groups of DECA members were each given $100 to purchase or create products and then sell them at school. Students were given about a week to plan, purchase or create, and market their product. They then sold them on December 4th after school. The objective of this event was to teach students how to get a return from an investment and also how to budget money. Marjory Stoneman Douglas DECA is one of the largest clubs at MSD with over 400 members. All students in Marketing and Academy of Finance classes have the opportunity to become members of DECA. DECA is a career and technical student organization composed of more than 200,000 students who are interested in careers in marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality or management.

e have had a wonder first semester! We end the semester celebrating the many successes Coral Springs Pre-K – 6th achieved during the first half of the school year. Students in grades 4th – 6th had the opportunity to be a part of our first basketball club and pep squad. We are proud of the staff that volunteered endless hours to offer enrichment activities to our students. Additionally, students from each grade level had the opportunity to read their creative writing pieces at our Barnes & Noble Night. We have several more Barnes & Noble nights scheduled throughout the school year.

Thanks to PTA for running a very successful Holiday Shop. The students had a great time shopping for their families. Finally, the students enjoyed Polar Express Day. The majority of staff and students wore pajamas to school and administration and support staff served hot chocolate. Yes, we have been busy so far this school year. We look forward to the 2nd half of the school year! At this time, we are accepting enrollment for our 6th grade class. Happy New Year!

s we move into the second half of the 2014-15 school year, we have a lot to look forward to and we can also look back at past successes. Let’s start by recognizing our Teacher of the Year, Coach Richard Rusche! Mr. Rusche has worked at Country Hills for many, many years as the PE Coach. He retires in January. Our School Related Employee of the Year is Mr. Donald Ammann. Mr. Ammann is our Micro Technology Specialist. He is extremely knowledgeable and always willing to help students, staff, and parents. We are lucky to have both of them at our school. Our students and teachers are heavily involved in the curriculum at each grade level. As we prepare for the new state assessments, rigor and relevance are apparent in every classroom. Students are involved in long term and short term projects reflecting the standards. One of the long-term projects that some of our students have been involved in is the Heritage Project. Our 3rd graders, 2/3 Multiage classes, and 5th graders were involved in

researching their heritage. This celebration is a time for the students to share and get to know more about diverse families, cultures and traditions. Students had to create a project based on where their ancestors came from. Our 5th graders created digital presentations that included background information, artifacts, foods, music, pictures, and facts. The culminating activity involved students/parents preparing a “signature” holiday dish for the International Feast. Students enjoyed eating different dishes reflecting the rich diversity of our school. Our parents were heavily involved in the project as well. We are in the process of starting after school clubs. The name of the program is “Staying Cool After School.” Students will have the opportunity to participate in an aftercare enrichment club for one hour per week for eight weeks. Most of the clubs focus on the arts and are taught by our teachers. Parents and students are excited. We are off to a great start of the second half of the school year!
