Dear Readers, It’s hard to believe we are here again, already at the Holiday season! Having grown up in England, for a long time I found it difficult to feel the holiday spirit here in Florida when it was 85º and brilliant sunshine outside! As the years have gone by, I have become more and more accustomed to the climate and realize now that it’s the winter months in South Florida that leave me feeling truly grateful for the utopia in which we live. While much of the country is getting ready to hunker down for a few months of freezing temperatures, layers upon layers of clothes, bitterly cold commutes and snow shoveling, here in South Florida we are preparing for the most beautiful time of the year! With the temperatures slightly lower, the humidity less oppressive and the freedom to still walk out the house in shorts and a T-shirt without freezing, it’s all the confirmation I need that I live in paradise. After all, where else can you still have a beach day in December? South Florida is a unique place to live all year round and the Holiday Season is no exception. It’s a great time to get out and about to explore our region and discover new adventures for the whole family. This edition of Sports and Activities is full of family-friendly events, ideas and activities to keep you fit and active over the winter months while keeping you looking your best for those family photos! But if you’re looking for a more creative pursuit, why not see what sparks your interest? Whether you are looking to participate in an art class, engage in an outdoor concert or attend a Family Fun Day, you’ll find everything you need and more than you expect in the directory! Certainly one of the most enjoyable, and at the same time, stressful aspects of the Holidays is finding the right gift for friends and family; what do you give the man or woman who has everything? Why not set yourself apart this year and think outside the (gift wrapped) box? In the pages ahead you can find lots of great gift ideas, such as giving the gift of fitness at a Health Studio or perhaps treat someone special to dance or acting lessons. Tickets to a concert or sporting event make for a great gift for that special couple or even an entire family! The Holidays are a special time for families to get together, reflect on the year that has passed and give thanks for all that life has sent our way. ‘Tis the season for giving and this is a perfect opportunity to contribute to a charity or local organization. Take a look through our pages to discover so many charitable events going on through the holiday season, have fun with your family while teaching the kids the meaning of the Holiday Spirit and value of giving back. As you prepare for all the festivities the Holiday Season brings, be sure to take plenty of time to be with the ones you love. It doesn’t have to be a special event; find a movie, read a book in a local coffee shop, find some live music, take a picnic to one of our parks or just go for a walk along one of our great multi-use trails. However you choose to see out 2017, everyone at Sports and Activities Magazine wishes you Happy Holidays and a great and prosperous New Year!

My warmest wishes,

Nikki Reading

Hello Davie Residents,

10

I hope everyone fared well during Hurricane Irma. Hurricane season will continue through November 30th. I urge everyone to always be prepared with the appropriate supplies needed to keep your family and home safe. As we move through the fall season and into the winter months, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has much to offer in the way of programs and community events. The dedicated staff of this department is just one of the many things that make the Town of Davie a great place to live, work and play. The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show and Green Fair will take place on November 18th and 19th at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. The show will feature over 100 craft vendors, community performances, and children’s activities. On Saturday, December 2nd Town Councilmembers and I will “flip the switch” during our Holiday Lighting of the Greens event at Town Hall. Join us for a night of fun that will include live performances, pictures with Santa, a lighted Horse Parade and more. The following weekend, on Saturday, December 9th the fun continues with our Holiday Snow Play festival at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. A special delivery of snow from the North Pole will be on site for children to play in, as well as a skating rink, train ride, children’s activities and pictures with Santa! The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, home of the Davie Pro Rodeo welcomes back the Southeastern Circuit Rodeo Finals on November 9th – 11th. This competition is something you definitely don’t want to miss! Cowboys and Cowgirls from across the Southeast United States compete over the three days for a chance to move on to the National Rodeo Finals. The CrossFit Ripped Competition returns to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds on Sunday, December 3rd for the second consecutive year. The Bergeron Rodeo Grounds holds numerous events throughout the year. Our multiuse facility is available for corporate events, car shows, craft shows, competitions, community events, concerts and festivals. We are always looking for new events to be held there. If you are interested in hosting an event, please contact the Town’s special events division at (954)797-1076. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a wide range of both traditional and non-traditional sports programs throughout the year. For youth ages 3-14, we offer Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, Flag Football, and Flag Cheerleading. Some of our more non-traditional sports and contractor lead sports include Skateboard lessons, PickleBall lessons, Tennis lessons, Lacrosse, and Basketball instruction. As always, remember if it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, community special events or recreation classes and activities for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something for everyone in your family. For more information on any Davie program or event, just call (954) 327-3941 or visit the Town of Davie newly renovated website at www.davie-fl.gov. See you in the parks, and don’t forget to “Like” us on Facebook.

Dear Cooper City Neighbors:

12

On the heels of hurricanes Irma and Maria, we as South Floridians are all feeling relieved that our homes, schools and businesses were spared from what could have been a catastrophic hit by a major category 4 or 5 hurricane. While the Florida Keys and our neighbors like Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands, Cuba and other Caribbean Islands were not so fortunate, we have much for which to be thankful. For most of us, our only loss was a few days without electricity, for which we were prepared. Although we may mourn the mighty oak tree that once adorned our swale or yard, we hesitate to complain with such great devastation and seemingly insurmountable damage looming in such close proximity to home. Those who encountered a little more damage, strive to recuperate quickly and rely on Cooper City to help achieve those goals. For Cooper City residents who suffered damage such as a downed section of fence, or a roof that gave way to the driving rains or a collapsed tree, the Building Department is making every effort to see to it that the permit process is expedited and the pain of repair is mitigated. HURRICANE IRMA RELATED PERMIT FEES ARE WAIVED Applicants must establish that the permit is for a DIRECT replacement resulting from Hurricane Irma damage. We hope these temporary changes will help reduce the strain on our residents as we all get back to normal. In the face of adversity, we have the opportunity to exercise the best within us. It is refreshing to know that the people of Cooper City rise and put their best foot forward wherever there is a need. I am grateful to have been joined by Danny Fernandez and his Disaster Relief Response Team volunteers from Potential Church of Cooper City, who assisted our Cooper City C.E.R.T team with shutter installation and removal for our vulnerable population registrants before and after the storm. Residents like Mike Buffalo, also participated in similar efforts, and I am personally appreciative for those contributions. Immediately after the storm, The Potential Church team sent their members to our parks to clear fallen limbs, downed trees and storm debris. We cannot thank them enough for their concern and support. The complete elimination of the storm debris which remains along our streets and roadways, will be a process that will take some time. Unlike some of our neighboring cities, Cooper City and our administration were pro-active in securing a FEMA certified disaster debris removal contract that is being honored. All debris will be removed. That said, the process is a lengthy one. Here are some tips that will help you to help expedite the storm debris collection efforts: 1. Separate tree limbs and vegetation from demolition/construction debris. These materials go to different dumps and mixed loads will not be accepted. Co-mingled materials slow down the collection process. Any bagged materials must be in clear bags so the debris is easy to identify. If bags are not collected, please dispose of them with your regular trash or save them for the next regularly scheduled bulk pick-up. Material in black bags may not be collected. 2. All storm debris that is stacked on the swale will be picked up by the City’s contractor. 3. PLEASE do your best to keep debris in the swale and NOT in the roadway. Besides creating a safety hazard, these very large trucks may not be able to get to your house if there is too much debris in the road. I thank you for your patience and cooperation. Feel free to share these tips with your friends and neighbors so we can get through the clean-up process as quickly as possible. Please call me if there is anything you wish to discuss on any issue that affects our city. Check out our upcoming events located in the directory section of this publication. I look forward to seeing you all during our fun winter programs. With our thoughts and actions, we make the world a better place.

Greg Ross Mayor

WORLD WAR II WOMEN VETERANS HONORED

On Saturday, October 7th, Capital Grille (Fort

The event began with a full Police escort by Fort Lauderdale Police Department, as the ladies were dropped off to a red carpet entrance with over 80 grateful American’s who were cheering and waving American Flags to their arrival. The WWII Veterans were treated with Champagne and a 4 course meal prepared special for them, followed by

It was truly a wonderful day for some of Nation’s most revered Women WWII Veterans. I

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-five years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Clubs have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Alan Strauss, Michael Ramirez, Valerie Wanza, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have gone above and beyond to help our mission,” said Renee. Another distinctive characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

“What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based

on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Renee does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.”

AROUND TOWN

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

Davie / Cooper City / SW Ranches Sports & Activities Directory | Issue 21 | November 2 017 - J an uar y 2 018

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, last year they made over 600 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our schools who are hungry. This year they are on track to surpass 1,200 boxes. Renee and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Publix Charities, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

By: Wayne Stofsky - Owner/Director, Broward Baseball Academy and Athletic Director, David Posnack School

H

igh School showcase teams have taken over the baseball landscape for players 14-18 years old, especially for student-athletes who want to play at the collegiate level. Locally, the Broward Baseball Academy (BBA), under the direction of Wayne Stofsky, has been very successful on the field and placing players in various schools across the country. In the last three years, 17 players who have played on BBA teams have signed or verbally committed to play college baseball at places like George Washington University, Dartmouth, Emory, Florida International University, Lehigh, Johns Hopkins and Fordham. “In today’s athletic landscape, the recruiting process is a full-time job that should include your coach, a college advisor and the family. I believe there is a place for almost everyone who wants to play in college as long as they have the desire, the commitment, the talent, the grades and they are ‘realistic’ about what level they can compete,” Stofsky says. This past summer, BBA fielded a 15u, two 16u’s and a 17u team that competed in 25 tournaments over the course of 8 weeks. These events, put on by Perfect Game, Prospect Wire, Prospect Select and by local colleges run anywhere from 3 to 7 days and each team gets between 4 and 9 games depending on how deep into the tournament you go. The players get great exposure and get to compete against the best talent from around the country. BBA’s philosophy is to develop players, teach them how to carry themselves like professionals and to have fun. “Our program is very family friendly. We travel together, stay in the same hotels, have cookouts,

socialize and make friends for life,“ says Stofsky. Student-athletes who make up BBA rosters come from about a dozen South Florida High schools including Cooper City, St. Thomas Aquinas, Nova, Taravella, University School, Cypress Bay and Archbishop McArthy. “I have a really good relationship with the high school coaches and they trust me to develop and protect their players in addition to helping them get to the next level,” said Stofsky. BBA does not do anything during the high school spring season. This is the time all players should be focused and committed to their high school teams. BBA team tryouts take place in December, prior to the start of the high school season and the first practices do not take place until May, when all schools have finished. For more information about the Broward Baseball Academy or showcase team tryouts email Wayne@BrowardBaseballAcademy.com.

The Dangers of Pseudo-Psychology P

By Dr. Katrina Macias & Dr. David Yudell

seudo-psychology refers to a false/unscientific approach to psychology. The science of psychology is founded upon rigorous research and evidence guided scientific method. This article will guide you on how to detect pseudo-psychology, understand its dangers, and access trustworthy sources of help for mental health concerns. In our current society, the internet is often our primary source of information gathering and sharing. This has become a breeding ground for pseudo-science. Moreover, as many children and adolescents tend to consult with the Web prior to and in place of approaching parents, this age group is at particular risk! At best, pseudo-psychology sources may fail to recommend effective action to address a concern; at its worst, pseudo-psychology often perpetuates harmful notions that can actually exacerbate mental health issues. For example, there are non-scientific internet sources that encourage individuals to avoid or stop taking psychotropic medication, which may prevent those living with particular conditions from functioning or experiencing quality of life, or even cause harmful side effects. Other pseudo-psychology sources encourage food restriction and living significantly underweight as a “lifestyle choice” rather than an eating disorder, which may increase the fatal risks of anorexia nervosa. Such great dangers urge us to wonder, how can this be avoided? Here’s what you can do: • Examine the information source. Unfortunately, many non-scientific articles, webpages, and books have titles that sound relevant and promising - but because anyone can write and release information, education and credentials must be considered. Information or advice related to mental health should be provided by individuals with a degree and/or professional license in psychology. A quick Google search of the letters listed behind an author’s name can remedy this.

Monitor the information sources your children are accessing. As developing minds are highly impressionable, it is critical to ensure that children are provided accurate/ safe information about mental health. Besides checking sources, making time to discuss health matters in a caring and nonjudgmental manner will help achieve this goal. For teens who resist these “talks,” provide them with a trustworthy resource instead (e.g., search keyword for articles and books on the American Psychological Association’s website: www.apa.org) and remind them that you are available for questions or conversation. • Seek appropriate professional services. It is important to seek professional care when problems impacting behavioral, social, emotional, academic, or occupational well-being arise. Finding a professional with the proper mental health education and/or licensure for your needs should be the focus - after all, you wouldn’t go to an eye doctor for a root canal! The ever-handy Google search or direct inquiry about one’s credentials can go a long way. The dangers of pseudo-psychology are certainly alarming - but by practicing and sharing these tips, you can avoid these risks and keep the mental health and well-being of you and your loved ones a priority. We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrMacias@DrYudell.com or DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

A

s a mother of three young children, it has often been difficult to manage a full-time career, household chores, child rearing and often, almost impossible to find time to focus on personal health, well-being and fitness. At times, I felt like I was almost resigned and defeated to living a life which did not encompass my old energetic and thriving self. I found that I was simply existing and surviving and often avoiding social situations due to my 35 lbs weight gain. My sleeping patterns were off and I was not happy. Three years after the birth of my 3rd child, my weight was not budging and I knew I had to take action. At this time I discovered Burn Boot Camp, a warm encouraging environment where I was given the support and encouragement I needed. It was time to do what I had to do to achieve my health goals and to be the role model that I needed to be for my family. I was 42 years old and I realized that I had to push harder and continually refine my eating habits to return to a healthier state. I realized that it would often mean waking up at 5am to exercise and work on myself before attending to the needs of others. There were many times in my past that I felt defeated. However, Burn taught me about the importance of a focused mindset and how my own health was important not only for me but for my entire family. With the encouragement and motivation offered by Burn Boot Camp trainers, I succeeded in losing my 35lbs and have maintained my ideal wait for more than 3 years! I fell in love with the program and knew I had found my calling, I wanted to share my success and help others to reach their goals, too. As I bring our first Burn Boot Camp to Davie, I want to bring you the same opportunity to find balance in your life as I have found in mine. Burn’s inspiring,

motivating and supportive environment has proven itself time and time again by providing women like you and I with real results and goal attainment. Burn Boot Camp is ideal for helping and inspiring women and moms to achieve balance and to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I want to share Burn with others to prove that they, too, can reach their goals and even exceed them as I did! A healthier and active mom inevitably makes for a healthier, more nurturing, loving, energetic and positive mom and role model. Burn is my opportunity to motivate, encourage, and to share my success and results with you. I am pledging to build a great relationship with you and to truly improve the quality of your life through Burn! Come see for yourself and feel the Burn at 5619 S. University Dr. Davie, FL 33328. We’re offering a free 30 days to everyone which can be redeemed on or before our grand opening. Use the link below: burnbootcamp.com/davie-fl

atching movies, playing board games, gathering for dinner, going to the beach are all fun activities that families enjoy together. The David Posnack Jewish Community Center is adding another component to that mix — fitness fun for the whole family — parents, kids, teens, grandma and grandpa too on the center’s 40-acre campus. Fitness and nutrition experts say living a healthy lifestyle should start at an early age. “Regular exercise and physical activity need to be part of that,” says Ralph Ramirez, director of fitness at the Posnack JCC. “Getting and staying fit is not just walking on a treadmill or lifting weights. It’s about movement, maintaining muscle tone and bone health, controlling weight gain and having fun.” The JCC continuously updates its workout classes and fitness equipment to stave off boredom. Parents may work out in the JCC’s state-of-the-art fitness center and bring their teens to join them. JCC floor staff is available to help the teens learn the proper and safe way to use the equipment. Then the family can cool off, splash around or swim laps in the J’s climate-controlled, competitionsized swimming pool. Mom or dad into yoga? The JCC has yoga and hot yoga classes for adults. Children, ages 3 and up, may get into yoga too, in classes divided by age groups that feature stretching, poses and meditation. The center also offers KidsFit classes for ages 6-10 with the J’s ProfessorFit (also known as Ysaac Kaplan), a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor, who teaches the kids the basics of fitness, how to exercise on treadmills and rowers and runs them through an obstacle course. Popular with adults is the JCC’s new XZone® fitness interval training classes. Pre-teens and teens can sign up for the comparable XPress Zone — interval training that builds strength and endurance, burns calories and fat and utilizes treadmills, rowing machines and Spin bikes during a supervised 50-minute workout. If sports are your exercise of choice, the JCC provides that too. The center has basketball leagues for adults, teens and children. If some instruction is needed first, the JHoops Basketball Academy delivers a terrific introduction. At the Academy children learn the basics of the game and the concept of teamwork and improve their skills in a friendly, non-competitive, fun environment in air-conditioned gymnasiums. During open-court time, dad, mom and the kids may practice shooting hoops. Boxing and soccer are the newest youth sports offered this fall. The boxing class focuses on training with 80 pound bags, teaching basic boxing techniques and sparing with a trainer. “Exercise and physical activity take many forms,” says Kaplan. The JCC offers numerous varieties: from hip-hop dance, to ballet, jazz and tap classes for ages 2 and up, to ballroom dancing, to gymnastics and tumbling, to martial arts classes for preschoolers through adults, to SilverSneakers, SilverSplash and SilverFit exercise classes for seniors. “But most important,” Kaplan says, “find activities that the family enjoys. That will inspire them to keep their bodies moving and stick with the program.” The Posnack JCC is located at 5850 S. Pine Island Road in Davie. For information call 954-434-0499, ext. 100.

BRINGING BUSINESS AND CAREERS TO THE CLASSROOM: PIONEER AND VEJV

64

By Monica Paris

T

hink of the word CAPE for a minute. What is the first thing that comes to mind? For most it would be a cape and a mask. But at Pioneer, CAPE is the new course for up and coming entrepreneurs. Short for Career and Professional Education, this two year program gives students the opportunity to become Microsoft certified specialists and learn the basics of starting a small business. Even though students know the class as CAPE, the curriculum they use is called Virtual Enterprise Junior Ventures, or VEJV for short. The program started out in New York City in the mid-nineties, and, with support from the New York Life Foundation, is recently being implemented in middle schools. The class is only available to 7th graders, and is a two year program. In their first year, students will work towards becoming Microsoft certification, while learning about marketing, creating business plans, and keeping a personal budget, among other entrepreneurial things. In their second year, they will come up with a business idea and work together to get it off the ground. “We will probably start brainstorming business ideas towards the later part of this year” said Ms. Ferreira, Pioneer’s VEJV teacher. “Also, by the time this year is over, we will have a pretty good idea of what our individual strengths are. This is important because next year, students will run day to day operations for their business. Some will work in the Human Resource department, while others will be our firm’s accountant.” She went on to say that one student in each class will be the CEO of their group’s company.

Not only will they work in their own departments, but they will do business with other schools who are also participating in the program. Currently there are about 500 schools nationwide that are part of the VEJV program in states ranging from New York to California. This year, about 15 Broward middle schools have joined the program. “We hope to have a trade show in Broward,” said Ms.Ferreira. At the trade shows, students set up booths for their businesses complete with flyers, marketing materials and products to sell. Participating schools are given a credit card with $5000.00 virtual dollars to spend on each other’s products and services. They can also shop on the Firm Directory, which is a site with listings to all the VE companies that are up and running. Currently, there is an annual trade show in New York City. So far, the year is off to a great start, despite time setbacks due to Hurricane Irma. “There are a couple of competitions for seventh grade VEJV students that I hope we can compete in,” said Ms. Ferreira. One of the competitions is the Elevator Pitch, which is similar to the program, Shark Tank. Her students also seem excited to be a part of this new class. “I wanted to join CAPE because I thought it would be a great learning opportunity, especially if I decide I wanted to start a business in the future, since everything is about technology now. It’s like a head start on my future,” said Milena Aleman. “What made me join CAPE was that I wanted to learn new things about technology, and I thought it’d be really fun!” added Samantha Probert.

W

e live in a cul-de-sac in Weston, surrounded by young families. The circular swale in front of our house is a racetrack for young kids and their trikes, bicycles, skateboards, battery powered mini motorcycles, and pretty much anything on wheels. Throw in a few dogs chasing around the kids and you have a pretty good snapshot of our neighborhood any weekday afternoon after school. On July 4th every year, we close off the street, wheel our barbecue grills and smokers to the front of our homes, set up picnic tables and join our neighbors around the island swale. We share food and drinks and the stories of our lives, rather than just waving to each other from our cars. The kids throw water balloons and squirt each other and a lot of adults with their toys. When the sun goes down, the fireworks come out and we end a great day having celebrated “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as the Declaration of Independence instructs. The families in our neighborhood came from around the world to celebrate a document that proclaims, “All men are created equal.” We are from Peru and California, Mexico and New York, Sri Lanka and Chicago, Colombia and Venezuela and yes, we even have Florida natives. We are from big cities and small towns. We are from different places, but what unites us is our children. Our children are born value-free and unbiased. Bias is learned behavior. Can we raise our children free of prejudice by simply refusing to transmit negative attitudes? Unfortunately, no, our society is not value-free and its negative messages are too pervasive. It’s important for children to grow up confident of their own identity, respectful of

other people, and aware of the rich diversity of their community and world. Teaching tolerance is important because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Tolerance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice. Tolerance does not mean that all behaviors have to be accepted. Behaviors that disrespect or hurt others, like bullying, or behaviors that break social rules, like lying or stealing, should not be tolerated. Tolerance is about accepting people for who they are, not about accepting bad behavior. Like all attitudes, tolerance is often taught in subtle ways. Even before they can speak, children closely watch — and imitate — their parents. There’s a country song that says, “Dad I’ve been watching you”. This song is powerful. Our children carefully observe our behavior and imitate it, good and bad. Celebrating differences of others doesn’t mean abandoning your own heritage. Your family’s cultural and religious traditions are something to be proud of. Families can find ways to celebrate differences of others while continuing to honor and pass down their own cultural heritage. When parents encourage tolerance in their children, talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

atch the #NovaBuzz!!! The start of the school year at Nova Blanche Forman Elementary has been nothing short of remarkable. This year has brought some change that starts with the new principal, Mr. Russell Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz is thrilled to now be a Nova Titan and is committed to making the educational experience for the Nova Blanche students one that is filled with social acceptance and academic growth. Nova Blanche is focused on the entire child. Our counseling services truly promote the mental and emotional health of our students. We are dedicated to celebrating our successes and building a culture of inclusion, excitement, fun, and learning. Bringing together families from all over Broward County, Nova Blanche prides itself on its diverse and varied student population. Students’ expectations are set high and may include participation in before school activities such as Chess Club, Student Council, and Nova’s Environmental Awareness Team (N.E.A.T) Club. In addition, several intermediate students take part in an “Hour of Code Club” where fourth and fifth graders learn programming codes and commands.

F

Nova Blanche Forman is fortunate enough to have a close relationship with the many colleges and universities that surround its campus. The “Science Sharks” from Nova Southeastern University join our aftercare students every Friday to participate in hands on science activities and delve into higher order thinking and questioning skills. NBF also hosts NSU graduate students and takes part in the America Reads/ America Counts program which provides individual tutoring to those students who may be struggling in reading or math. Due to its close proximity to these institutions, NBF has been lucky enough to provide field experience and internships to college students from Broward College, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, and NSU. By doing so, NBF students have additional teachers in the classrooms to provide a more dynamic instructional environment. Nova Blanche wants you to get to know all of the great happenings that transpire daily at the school. Please take the time to follow Nova Blanche Forman on Instagram and Twitter on the handle @NBFelem. Also, you can get to know Nova by following and/or using the hashtag #KnowNova. We want all of Broward County to start to catch the #NovaBuzz.

FRIENDS OF FLAMINGO

lamingo Elementary School is delighted to take this opportunity to highlight our Partners-in-Education and “Friends of Flamingo.” The organizations and individuals cited below have been unwavering supporters of our school and have consistently “come through” for us to meet our needs. Please join us in thanking them in this article. Prior to opening this year, Pastor Erik Bennet, our long-time Partner-in-Education from Hope Fellowship Church, had volunteers from his organization undertake an enormous painting project for our school this summer. The volunteers painted our halls a lovely biscuit color and landscaped the grounds. In addition, Pastor Bennet also brought a large assortment of school supplies. This partnership with our school has been outstanding! We are so thankful to Pastor Bennet for always looking after us at Flamingo. Another Partner-in-Education we wish to recognize is Mr. Lance Seltzer of Seltzer Realty. Mr. Seltzer has donated over $350.00 dollars each year, for the past four years, so we may purchase car-line name tags for our students. This donation has hugely assisted us in ensuring that our dismissals run safely and smoothly. We truly are thankful to Mr. Seltzer for always coming through for us! A third Partner-in Education that we wish to recognize is Mr. Jason Pabon of LSW. Mr. Pabon underwrote a wonderful welcoming breakfast for our teachers and staff. Mr. Pabon also gave us two gift cards in the amount of $25.00 that went to two lucky staff members.

By AP Claudia McGrath

Thank you Mr. Pabon and LSW for your generosity and commitment to teachers and staff. Another Partner-in-Education that we wish to recognize is Mr. Tony Espinosa of Horace Mann. Mr. Espinosa donated boxes of rubber gloves and first aid kits to our school. He also provided calendars and pens to our teachers for their first day back “goodie bags.” Thank you Mr. Espinosa for your necessary gifts to our teachers. To digress a bit, sometimes neighbors or former employees of Flamingo make charitable donations to our school. Each year we have been blessed with donations of school supplies by those we refer to as “Flamingo Friends.” Before our school opening, we were so pleased because our supply closet was stocked with shelves full of necessary school supplies by Mr. and Mrs. Laudon, our neighbors, and Mr. Lyle Schaefer, a former bookkeeper at the school. We are so thankful to each of them and wish them many blessings for their consistent generosity year after year. Last by not least, we want to recognize Mrs. Renee Herman, founder of the Harvest Drive, Inc. for bringing us crate loads of colorful backpacks. As with our other Partners and “Flamingo Friends”, this organization contributes backpacks to our school every year. We thank Mrs. Herman and the Harvest Drive Volunteers from the bottom of our hearts! In closing, we once again reiterate to all our wonderful and generous Partners and “Flamingo Friends” how grateful we are to them and wish them many blessings!

SCHOOLS

G

riffin Elementary celebrated Peace Week in September! This week is designed to help schools educate students about peace issues, such as respecting all life, rejecting violence, sharing with others, listening to understand, and preserving the planet. Under the direction of our Guidance Counselor, Ms. Teena Novack, faculty, staff, and students participated in activities that help students to understand and manage conflict in their own lives and gain greater perspective on how peace is fostered both nationally and internationally. Some of the activities that our students participated in included a “Chalk Talk”, where they wrote peaceful messages outside using their favorite colored chalk, a “Peace Tree” where the students would add messages of peach by hanging them on the tree as leaves, wearing white as a symbol of peace, having “Waste-Free Wednesdays” in order to reduce trash and help our environment, daily messages on WGES, which is our Morning Announcements channel, and

our “Pinwheels for Peace”, which each student created during their art class, under the direction of Ms. Hall. We took a school picture where everyone formed a peace sign while wearing white and holding their pinwheels. Griffin Elementary prides itself in not only honoring peace during this week, but we also ensure that we are thinking and working towards these issues year-round. For example, we have an active Eco-Patrol Club that meets and advocates for saving our planet. This is under Ms. Jacqueline Sanchez and she has done a phenomenal job raising awareness to this most important cause. When speaking about respecting all life, we are guardians of the burrowing owl, which is a threatened species. As a school, we encourage all students and staff to practice peaceful actions, such as kindness to others. We hope to be encouraging students to be lifelong peace advocates here at Griffin!

o you know what the 7 habits of Happy Kids are? The 7 habits are being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, think win win, seek first to understand then to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw. Every day at school we put these habits into our daily routine to become leaders. We become teachers, Role models, and being responsible for ourselves. To begin with, having leadership skills let us become teachers. For example, we teach calendar math. When we are teaching math skills through calendar math we put first things first and do the skills our class needs the most. Also in we are running behind we do the important things first. Another thing we do in class to be a teacher is we are proactive. We help kids that don’t understand the English language. We can translate so they can understand. As leaders, there are many ways we can be role models. Some examples in the leader in me program help you synergize. You can be table captain, a reading buddy, and you can lead science investigations. You can be a role model by leading a science experiments. We synergize when we do science experiments. I am a role model to my reading buddy when I read to her. I keep the end in mind so she knows what the story is about.

Following the 7 habits helps us be responsible. My class is proactive because we look on the board to see what need to do. We organize our goals and we make a plan to learn what we didn’t understand the first time. Our class also thinks win-win because we all have a job and responsibility in the classroom. One job is a team captain. They are responsible for the team supplies. We are loving the 7 habits of Happy kids here at Fox Trail Elementary.

NOVA SHEDS LIGHT ON SOCIAL ISSUES WITH NEW DISTRICT INITIATIVES With mental health at the forefront of student wellness, schools across the country

are tackling issues like suicide head on. At Nova High School, administrators and teachers were looking to implement new district initiatives and programs designed to improve student mental health and address all the social issues surrounding teens today. A HOPE Sunshine Club was the perfect fit. Last year, Nova became one of 25 Broward County high schools to add the program to their roster of extra-curriculars. HOPE (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively) Sunshine Clubs is a state-wide initiative aimed at educating, supporting, and developing problem solving, coping and leadership skills, while fostering the prevention of suicide, bullying and substance abuse. “The HOPE Sunshine Club is so important because although suicide is a rising cause of death, especially amongst our student population, we provide a safe environment to share thoughts and get more people trained and confident in providing assistance and a helping hand to those that need it,” said Angela McBee, AP Psychology teacher at Nova and sponsor of the club. In the United States alone, we lose 12 teens to suicide every day, according to the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention. Teachers like McBee are working to change that. “We need to reduce the stigmas associated with depression, mental health and other factors that lead to suicidal thoughts and tendencies, and arming our students with the proper knowledge and avenues of help will not only empower them to help others, but to also help themselves as well,” she said. Dr. John LaCasse, the school’s principal, has been a big advocate for school-wide initiatives aimed at improving student wellbeing. “The district and Nova High have embraced the vision of social and emotional development. Teachers have viewed a powerful movie called ‘Just Listen’ and eventually students will see this same movie,” he said. The school hopes to become an “active listening school” and, eventually, part of an “active listening county,” McBee said. Programs like HOPE Sunshine Clubs

By Corinne Dannon

are helping make those goals a reality. “We want to train and encourage students, faculty, staff, administration and community members to learn how to truly listen to one another, thus providing safe and effective avenues for those seeking or needing help to reach someone who will listen, guide that person to the proper people needed to get assistance and ensure we are part of the solution to reducing suicide rates and attempts, as well as shining light on mental health and its importance in our schools and society.” For more information on HOPE Sunshine clubs or suicide prevention, visit www.fisphope.org.

72

Southwest Broward County serving close to 200 students ages 2 through 8th grade. This facility is state-of-the-art, especially built for Montessori. Now under new ownership, Ms. Elizabeth Gonzalez has brought her vast experience and passion for academic excellence to Apple Tree Montessori. Ms. Elizabeth is the owner of A World of Knowledge in Pembroke Pines, recognized as one of the top 5 early learning centers in Florida, and is the founder of Green Tree Preparatory Charter School, ranked #22 out of 514 charter schools in Florida. Rest-assured, the Apple Tree philosophy has and will remain the same, “Every child given freedom and a spark of learning enthusiasm will explore and excel in all academic areas”. Apple Tree Montessori is one of the only true Montessori schools in South Florida. Each teacher is Montessori trained, and the curriculum and classrooms are designed for a hands-on approach to learning. Each classroom is uniquely suited to the needs of its students. Preschool rooms feature low sinks, chairs, and tables; a reading corner with a small couch (or comfy floor cushions); reachable shelves; and child-sized kitchen tools—elements that allow independence and help develop small motor skills. Montessori’s distinctive learning materials are displayed on open, easily accessible shelves. They are arranged (left to right, as we read in Western languages) in order of their sequence in the curriculum, from the simplest to the most complex. In upper-level classrooms you’re likely to see large tables for group work, computers, interactive whiteboards, and areas for science labs. Above all, each classroom is warm, well-organized, and inviting, with couches, rugs, and flowers to help children and youth feel calm and at home. Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections, Montessori students become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners. They are able to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly—a skill set for the 21st century. They also develop a sense of order, coordination, concentration and independence with a respect for their environment and community. Eighteen years ago, my own child went to Apple Tree Montessori for preschool. Although my intentions were simply to place her in a safe and nurturing learning

environment, I was continually astounded by the exceptional academic growth and strides in her independence. In a very short time, she was speaking and understanding two foreign languages, she knew her continents by sight on a map, and her fine motor skills gave her a fast-tracked independence. She was able to pour her own milk without spilling, she could steadily measure ingredients in the kitchen and was able to dress herself with zippers, buttons and laces. All this and she had mastered her colors, shapes and letters while developing a solid foundation in math, writing and reading! Montessori based learning may not be for every child, but my child excelled in this environment with the freedom to learn at her own pace. You will be delighted with the Apple Tree campus. Ms. Gonzalez has given a face lift to the school this summer. The entire facility has been pressure cleaned, classrooms have been painted, new furniture and materials have been purchased. New awnings surround and protect the buildings, the entire portable received a complete face life with new carpets, boards and cabinetry, and new playground material has been added to the preschool. The library has been reorganized and new equipment has been added to accommodate the new Library/Media Center. Apple Tree also now has a new middle school laboratory and will continue to obtain materials for its STEM program. Apple Tree Montessori accepts students that have the desire to learn, the ability to concentrate and who display self-control. Students must demonstrate average to superior learning abilities and show a promise of benefiting from the Montessori program and philosophy. Students are admitted to all grades as openings permit. Apple Tree Montessori invites you and your family to schedule a tour of the facility. Personalized tours allow them to provide you with a first-hand experience of their school in action while focusing their time and attention to answering your specific questions and concerns.
