Hello Fort Lauderdale!
Summer is here! Fort Lauderdale is such a great place to be in the summer with so many events taking place in every area. Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory is full of wonderful things for every family to do wherever you live or want to play. I encourage you to download the Sports & Activities app to always keep us at your fingertips. Summer has always been a year-round event for me, having grown up in Hawaii. As far as I can remember, moments included all kinds of activities from days of running barefoot through sprinklers, surfing and backyard barbeques, to juicy fresh fruits and lush green trees. Summer is the season when everything is truly alive and the world is more colorful and vibrant. Many of you may be traveling in and out of town this summer and I’d venture to guess that your future includes kids summer camps, paddle boarding, pool parties and anything else that puts you and your family outside. Also, as coastal dwellers, almost all of us will have visitors! Whatever your plans are for the coming weeks, enjoy! If you’re like me and you’re hard at work except on the weekends, then make the most of those days. If the kids are away at camp or in a day camp nearby, they should be doing the same - relishing the summer time outdoors in all the ways that kids do. This summer, make a promise to yourself to unplug and enjoy each moment. When you are at the beach soaking up the warm Florida sun or at a birthday party with your kids having a great time, cherish the moment. Take that special photo to commemorate the moment, but be sure to honor those photos by preserving the value you feel at the time you are taking them. Cherish those memories as we did when we were young, when taking a photo meant a long process of bringing the film to the lab and then waiting to get it back a week later, hoping they all captured the memories you experienced. On those rainy summer days when you’re stuck in the house, pick your photos of choice and create albums, scrapbooks and fill in picture frames as we used to do. Not every memory needs to be in print, but commit to making the important ones count. Enjoy the activities in which you engage, without stopping every few moments to snap a selfie. As the publisher of the Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory, your feedback is very important to me. I would love to hear about your amazing experiences this summer, children in our community and ideas of what you would like to see more of in our future directories. Email me directly to possibly feature your ideas in our Back to School issue at DebralenSports1@aol.com. I wish all of the readers of the Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory and the dedicated teachers of our outstanding city a magical and memorable summer break. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller My Best to you, Debralen Cula

Dear Neighbors:
6
Fort Lauderdale Icons to be Inducted into Walk of Fame on May 23. Ceremony to Highlight Great American Beach Party. Congratulations to Hugh Taylor Birch, Ina Lee, Ron O’Brien, and Tim Schiavone. These four icons will be recognized for their lifelong accomplishments and outstanding contributions to our City with induction into the Fort Lauderdale Walk of Fame on Saturday, May 23 as part of the sixth annual Great American Beach Party. Each of this year’s honorees has distinguished themselves in their respective fields, while greatly contributing to the progress and advancement of our City. Hugh Taylor Birch: Recognized as the father of Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hugh Taylor Birch fell in love with this area shortly after arriving here in the late 1800s. His foresight and commitment to protecting the beauty and aesthetics of Fort Lauderdale resulted in the preservation of hundreds of acres of precious oceanfront land, including the City’s world famous public beach that millions of residents and visitors continue to enjoy today. Ina Lee: As founder of the Winterfest Boat Parade and owner and publisher of Travelhost of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Ina Lee has spent decades promoting Fort Lauderdale Beach as a “must see” destination; strengthening the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry; supporting major events that bring worldwide attention and media exposure to the City, while serving as an enthusiastic promoter and steadfast supporter of Fort Lauderdale. Ron O’Brien: Diving Coach Ron O’Brien has had a long and distinguished career coaching eight United States Olympic teams and training numerous Olympic Medalists and World Champions at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex from 1990 to 2006. O’Brien produced a United States National Champion in 25 of his 30 years as a diving coach and had a National Champion for 24 consecutive years from 1973 through 1996. Tim Schiavone: As owner of The World Famous Parrot Lounge, Tim Schiavone has worked tirelessly for over four decades to enhance tourism, business, and hospitality in the City, while serving as a goodwill ambassador for Fort Lauderdale Beach. Under his leadership over the past 45 years, The World Famous Parrot Lounge has helped support and raise money for countless charities and philanthropic endeavors. Each honoree will receive a commemorative marble paver that will be placed in the Walk of Fame to memorialize their outstanding accomplishments. The Fort Lauderdale Walk of Fame is located on the beach along the east side of A1A at Las Olas Boulevard. In addition to the Walk of Fame induction ceremony, the Great American Beach Party will feature a day and evening full of exciting activities and entertainment for the entire family! The FREE event takes place on Saturday, May 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Seven bands will perform live on two stages throughout the day treating crowds to classic oldies, rock n’ roll, 60’s hits, jazz favorites, rhythm & blues and more. The Great American Sand Sculpting Contest returns from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the beach at Poinsettia Street. A Classic Car Show takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. along A1A, featuring vintage hot rods, ragtops and muscle cars. At 2:30 p.m., join us for a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces, highlighted by a precision freefall parachute drill by a team of skilled para-commandoes. Plus, we’ll have beach games, water slides, bounce houses, face painting, art exhibits, and more! Get all the details at www.fortlauderdale.gov. See you at the beach!

offered at Propilates Camp speak to the very essence of being a child. The growing and changing child desires to jump, climb, swing and spin. This desire for motion is highly enjoyable for children because frequent vestibular and Proprioceptive experiences help children to develop a foundation for many postural, ocular and spatial skills. These activities, skills and the feelings of flight are provided in the Just Kids Courses. Poses have been designed for children to discover the fun of exercise and that training the body and mind helps them grow healthy, strong, open and balanced. This suspension fitness experience instills courage and self-confidence while imparting a sense of price, light-heartedness and gratitude at the end of each class. AntiGravity Kids: Just Kids course is for children ages 5-10. The suggested length of class is no less than 60 minutes and no longer than 90 minutes. Rather than a drop-in class, it is recommended that 10-week sessions be implemented. Childhood education specialists support consistency in activities, allowing time for children to form communities and become comfortable with the material, in other words repetition, repetition. Twenty-five years of research from the Center for Music and Movement in Princeton, New Jersey and fifteen years of Casanova’s experience all support the
fact that children begin to display playful, confident exploration between weeks 7-10, albeit social behavior milestones set in as well so this is both a blessing and a challenge! These milestones have been mirrored in the AntiGravity® Kids curriculum over the course of the 4 years piloting classes at Imagination Place. Amazingly, these milestones display themselves over and over again. Each class builds on the previous week’s practice to promote flexibility, core, strength building and community, bonding while learning the power of stillness and focus. This focus, practicing awareness and using the imagination, supports the self-regulation of emotions. Our goal is to address the whole child by providing a curriculum that builds healthy lifestyle skills. These very primal needs are met in a safe, fun, creative environment that adds the element of flight mystifying and delighting every child. The class utilizes thematic material to engage while he or she enjoys this wonderful sensation of flight: balancing, swinging, and inverting, or hanging upside down. Instructors feel that the most important part of this experience is teaching children awareness and appreciation of their body and the importance of health and exercise. Kids say the best part of AntiGravity ® is EVERYTHING! The classroom is a safe place for children to explore and overcome their own physical and mental boundaries. AntiGravity Kids: Just Kids Course is appropriate for all levels of experience.

Dear Dr. Corn, M
y 10 year-old son is of average height and weight and dreams of becoming a NFL quarterback, just like Seattle Seahawk’s QB Russell Wilson. This is a conversation I hear incessantly. I am delighted he loves playing youth football, plus it has turned him into a reader as he now devours articles and stories written about his favorite NFL team. Yet, I believe the odds are highly unlikely he will play professional football – for many realistic reasons (Did I mention I am only 5’ 8”?). I don’t want to discourage him, but at the same time I am also concerned about fostering unrealistic hopes. How can I best strike a balance so I don’t damper his enthusiasm but at the same time don’t encourage an unlikely wish?
Dear Understanding Parent, It’s wonderful your son has a dream that propels him forward as he is benefitting physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally. Right now it’s not about whether this dream can be realized, but lending verbal and emotional support for his desire for seeking such an admirable goal. Think about this – childhood is a time when a youngster ought to have the freedom to tap into one’s imagination. Daydreams can be constructive and uplifting. Can you recall in your childhood, being in your driveway or neighborhood and imaging hitting the homerun to win the World Series or catching the winning TD in the Super Bowl? It is within this imaginary realm that anything is possible. Of course, wishing isn’t going to make it magically occur. Any dream must be anchored in reality. Success in any sport or endeavor occurs following years of hard work, dedication, perseverance, plus a little luck! At this moment, your son is willing to try to be the best he can because of his love of the game of football, which means he is intrinsically motivated. This type of motivation is what every parent hopes to instill in their youngster; be it in youth sports, academics, or one’s future career. Because it’s not about the outcome, it’s about exerting maximum effort. If he can focus on performing to the best of his ability, then he is sewing the seeds
of self-mastery and personal pride. This also corresponds to what sport psychologists call developing a “task orientation” (which results when feelings of competence arise as a result of skill improvement). At the same time, did you know that youth sport participation peaks around the ages of 10 to 13? Your son is standing at the threshold of imaging his sports future. However, puberty is looming along with physiological and other maturational changes, which will likely fortify or diminish his present outlook. In fact, statistically speaking, the number of teens involved in organized sports declines significantly during the ages between 13 and 18. As long as you can discourage your son from putting a disproportionate emphasis on winning or excessive pressure to become the next football superstar, it sounds like you are on the right path. As you aptly realize, it’s not about whether your son has greater athletic capability than others. It’s more about encouraging his passion and desire, along with keeping his mental and emotional side grounded, realistic, and present-minded. If you can teach your son to maintain that balance between his aspiration, his inspiration (to strive to emulate Seahawks Russell Wilson), and making sure he puts in the perspiration required, then you will have raised a winner (in sports and in life)!

Handwriting Intervention Handwriting is a complex skill that is difficult to master for some
children. There are several factors that may be impacting your child’s ability to develop efficient and legible handwriting. Simply having your child practice writing skills may not be enough. More often than not, there are underlying issues such as postural, motor and processing concerns making writing development difficult. If not identified and addressed, children and parents continue an ongoing struggle. handWriting reQUires: • Adequate postural muscles, joint stability and endurance to maintain upright, erect and stable sitting posture. • Development of palmer arches in the hand and wrist strength is required in order to functionally grasp and control a writing tool.
• An intact visual processing system is essential for tracking lines, planning space, as well as identifying and remembering letters. • Adequate motor planning to execute and direct the hand in movement necessary to draw the strokes. • Intact sensory processing ability to communicate information taken into the visual system to the motor planning centers that produce the letters. Occupational therapists are educated in sensory motor development and skilled in the analysis of handwriting. Handwriting deficiencies are treated by first identifying the cause of the problem through skilled evaluation, and second, fun creative activities to correct the underlining deficiencies developed and tailored to your child’s needs. My experience illustrates poor handwriting to be the major contributing factor to underachievement in academic performance and learning. Having a skilled therapist identify what is causing your child to struggle with writing development is the key to intervention. If your child is avoiding and/or struggling with writing development, contact an occupational therapist to help!

t’s never too early to start getting ready for College. At Rock Island Elementary, we strive to get our students college bound and career ready. Beginning with our preschoolers, we incorporate projects based learning, technology and all state standards to create life-long learners. Preparing our students for success begins the very first day of school. We maximize students learning each day to prepare them for college and their careers. Through our innovative curriculum, programs (Field study experience, Agriculture, Food and Environment Resources, Arts/Culinary/Communication, and many others), and activities such as College tours for grades 4-5 students, career day, college door decorating contest, etc., the students are exposed to a multitude of careers and the pathways toward achieving them. We work together as a school community to prepare our students for today’s global society.
A College Ready student is an academically prepared student, ready for post-secondary education or training without the need for remedial coursework. Whether you are pursuing a four-year degree or studying for a skilled trade license, being ready means having the reading, writing, mathematics, social, and cognitive skills to qualify for and succeed in the academic program of your choice. A Career Ready student possesses both the necessary knowledge and technical skills needed for employment in his/her desired career field. For example, a student who is ready to become a teacher not only possesses knowledge of education policy, but also possesses all required certifications to become a teacher. If you want to learn more about our college bound school, please feel free to contact Christina Menendez, Principal, or Erica Levine-Rawls, Assistant Principal, at 754-322-8300. s senior year comes to a close and application decisions finish coming in from universities, the current graduating class is looking back at the last four years and everything they may have been involved in. In my case, when looking back I cannot help but be thankful for the opportunities and experiences made possible for me by Stranahan High School and its staff. When it comes to my college search I would not have been able to find the success I have at schools like Ohio State University, the University of Arizona, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Florida without the experience gained through the engineering magnet program here at Stranahan and it’s various after school programs. From learning project management skills and improving my problem solving process while constructing my senior design project and getting the chance to study at Florida Atlantic University through dual enrollment classes with the magnet program, I feel prepared not just for learning engineering at the university level but also university level coursework in general. But the experiences I found here are not only from academics.
I also found a place for myself after school in programs such as the National Honor Society, in which I became the ESE liaison officer working with the ESE department at the school for projects such as tie-dye events, cupcake decoration and generally working to promote a better relationship with the student body. I also began some of my own after school initiatives such as an after school tutoring program for students with online classes or those in need of any kind of assistance with SAT or EOC prep. In the end I can honestly say hard work has paid off for me as I head to university on scholarship and in some cases, such as the University of Arizona, a full tuition scholarship. Again, I would like to thank Stranahan High School and its staff for giving me the ability to do all that I have.

Shelly Luckhoo is a student at Ft. Lauderdale High
School. She is going to graduate this year in May and she has a bright future ahead of her. “Shelly is a very responsible and sweet girl,” said her BRICE advisor, “She is very friendly and always ready to help others.” I had the pleasure of talking to her a couple of times and I was immediately impressed by her determination and self-confidence. Shelly is the proud recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship in the amount of $9,000 and many other well-deserved Grants (for a total of over $25,000!). She was also accepted into NSU’s Honors Program. She will be attending NOVA Southeastern University with a major in biology. She is also interested in the EMT program. She is an excellent student, very focused and motivated and she works really hard to reach
her ambitious goals. When I asked her why she chose biology, she told me that she has always been interested in the medical field. H e r w h o l e f a m i l y, including her mother, her two brothers and her sister, shares the same passion. It was obviously very natural for Shelly to follow the same path. It is going to be a long journey, but I have no doubts that she will rise up to the challenge and achieve her dreams. Congratulations Shelly and good luck! You are a great example for all of your fellow students.

cNab Elementary in Pompano Beach continues to provide a highquality, top-notched educational experience for all 688 students enrolled. Many changes are taking place in the world of education. Change seems to be the one thing that is always constant in the business of teaching and learning. However, the other thing that is constant is that at McNab Elementary is a group of educational professionals that remain steadfast in their dedication to the students. With changes such as the new Florida Standards and the new Florida Standard Assessments (FSA), McNab Elementary administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community all remain focused on something simple…teaching and providing a memorable learning experience. McNab Elementary is excited for the annual McNab Family Fun Day that is organized by the amazing McNab PTA. The event takes place on May 30th from 10:00am – 3:00pm. The entire community comes together to relax
and have fun! Stage shows, food, slides, booths, carnival games and many surprises are in store for those who attend. Mark your calendars and plan to be there…you won’t want to miss it. Academic and social growth remain at the top of the list of priorities for McNab. This year, we introduced Mr. Mick Nabbington to our students. Mick is a puppet character that students write letters to about social concerns. Mick responds to the letters and also makes regular appearances on our live morning broadcast to our campus. The students love Mr. Mick Nabbington and enjoy him as a new addition to our school. McNab Elementary is located at 1350 SE 9th Avenue in Pompano Beach. Feel free to contact Mr. Russ Schwartz, Principal, at 754-3227050. Also, follow McNab on Twitter @McNabElementary and online at mcnab.browardschools.com. Feel free to contact McNab Elementary with any questions or to schedule a tour.
A Fun Night at Harbordale Elementary
O
n Friday, April 10th, Harbordale Elementary hosted the Tile Night. This event, organized by the HSA (Harbordale School Association), has become a much-anticipated tradition at the school. Once a year, parents and children get together to help raise money for their school in a very creative and artistic way. The school cafeteria was transformed, for the occasion, into an art studio where everybody was able to express his/her imagination. After buying the tiles, the kids and their parents would sit at one of the tables and start working on their little masterpieces. They were provided with brushes and paints by the school staff and volunteers. They could get as creative and original as they wanted. The only requirement was to have fun! They were instructed to give three coats for each tile so that the

paint could stand the high temperatures of the oven. In fact, once the tiles were completed, they had to return them to the staff to be glazed and the kiln fired to achieve the final glossy look. Once the tiles are completed, they will be displayed in the hallway of the school, next to the ones made the previous years for everyone to see. The HSA initiative, together with many other events they organize, not only help the school financially, but also give a chance for the families to spend time together. What a great idea! Everybody benefits, even the plain school walls seem to come alive with all of the bright colors and joyful drawings. For more information about the school, please visit www.broward.k12.fl.us/harbordaleelem/.

ernon, now 24 and a force in the Miami’s defense, remembers his experience at the team’s youth football camp in 2003 like it just happened. It was then that Vernon decided for himself that football and not soccer was going to be his passion and he planned his future. “Where we have lunch now, that’s where I would eat lunch as a kid because that’s where we had the little snacks and stuff. Then they brought us into the team meeting room and we watched the season highlights of the Dolphins,” said Vernon, a defensive end who was chosen in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Dolphins out of the University of Miami. “What are the odds of me being in the team meeting room again as a Miami Dolphin?” If the resume Vernon put together for a high school project is any indication, he already was setting some favorable odds. His objective at the top of the page read, “To obtain a position in the National Football League.” Clearly a lofty goal to some at the time, but Vernon was serious. The fact that he was named the MVP of the Dolphins football camp in that summer of 2003 added credence to Vernon’s vision, and that was the third consecutive summer he participated. His father, Lascelles, was a soccer player back in his native Jamaica before an unfortunate accident ended his career in high school, so while initially he was saddened by his son’s choice to stop soccer for football, he had no doubt that Olivier would reach his goal. “Anything he puts his mind to, he always sees it through and he doesn’t like to lose,” Lascelles Vernon said. “He’s very competitive and that’s what he wanted to do since he was a kid. It was very exciting watching him at Dolphins camp and everyone was amazed at how fast he was and how much stamina he had. That came from soccer and he was excited to tour the facilities and meet the Dolphins players.” Bernadette Vernon proudly displays the jerseys her son wore all those years ago in Davie, including one with former Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler’s autograph on the back, among others. She also kept the autographed Dolphins football Olivier received for
being named as the camp’s MVP along with lots of photos of him and his friends practicing and playing. After watching her son excel at soccer as well as an art student, Bernadette also was caught a little off guard about his newfound passion for football. He pursued it at Miami American High School and used the skills he learned at Dolphins Camp to get a leg up on the competition. It was then that his mother realized football would be his calling. “He knew what he wanted to do from the time he was in middle school, and I saw how much fun he was having at that football camp,” said Bernadette, who got to watch Olivier play in the same stadium as the Dolphins with the Miami Hurricanes. “It’s incredible. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remind me that it’s real, and that my son, who wrote on his resume that he was going to be in the NFL, is there now.” Vernon can laugh now about what he was like as a young camper taking instructions from former Dolphins and NFL players. Through the past few summers, he now experiences a role reversal as the student became the teacher. There is no doubt Vernon enjoys sharing his story with them. “When they ask me about what it was like, I enjoy telling them because kids look up to people like us at this level,” he said. “It is fun when I can just let them know that dreams can come true and that I was sitting right where they were when I was their age, dreaming about being here.” Oliver Vernon’s dream started at the Dolphins Academy football camps more than 10 years ago, sign up today and maybe your’s will start there as well. t. Lauderdale Rebels Coach and President Steve McBride has a passion and a mission to change lives through what he knows best, coaching and mentoring. The Rebels are a bit of an underdog story that does not begin when McBride came on as President, rather it started in his childhood and followed into the years following Hurricane Wilma. In 2005 the stadium in which the Ft. Lauderdale Rebels currently play, Little Yankee/Floyd Hull Stadium was not only destroyed by the storm, but utilized as a temporary dumping ground for hurricane debris. McBride recalls “It’s been pretty tumultuous around the park, but the community has always rallied around the park and has great sentiment there. I am from Ft. Lauderdale and I grew up with kids that played there. They had their own league we all played outside and we were kind of jealous of them.” Shortly after the hurricane damage, the Ft. Lauderdale Patriots became the Ft. Lauderdale Jaguars and following the 2006 stadium renovation, the team merged with NE Rebels to create the Ft. Lauderdale Rebels as they were working through some financial challenges. McBride’s goal for the park now is to, “revamp the park and bring pride back to the park.” McBride has been the coach of other teams in Broward County and has seen the results of idle hands over the years. One of his biggest challenges is that his season is only three to four months in duration. Coach McBride relents, “I’ve lost a lot of kids during the breaks. They have been locked-up in Juvenile detention for small slip-ups, and have lost focus. I try to be with the kids as much as I can. I started an off-season program in 2012 called the ‘South Florida Sports Academy’ so I do not lose kids.” Since becoming Co-President in December, 2014, Coach McBride has made game and life changing implementations. He started the Ft. Lauderdale Rebels with a single team and just five kids but has grown to multiple teams with boys ages 5-13. Since December, McBride has implemented camps that benefit the kids at little to no cost. He has a commitment from NFL players Kevin Elliot: Buffalo Bills Wide Receiver; Nigel Bradham: FSU alumnus and Buffalo Bills Linebacker; Nick Moody: San Francisco 49ers Linebacker; C.J. Holston: UM Corner Back; and NFL Prospect Curtric “Spiffy” Evans of Boston College, who all work with the kids weekly until they need to leave to go their respective camps. These players are not only coaches to McBride’s Rebels, but they are mentors. McBride explains, “Kids make a play, they give them
brand new gloves on the spot. Four to five each weekend.” McBride also takes his mentoring off the fields. He currently is running workshops on relevant topics such as conflict resolution and interview skills so they are ready for the challenges that present themselves. He wants them to be prepared for when they make a great play and the media wants to speak to them. “We don’t want them to freeze up. We keep going outside of football to make this a life skills program, not just a sport.” McBride is also using his network to create a feeder program with private schools so the kids can have access to higher education. Private schools in the Ft. Lauderdale area are invited by Coach McBride out to the practices and games to become familiar with the athletes. Many of the players are offered scholarships to the institutions starting in the 8th grade. A “graduate” of Coach McBride’s program is his younger cousin, Patrick Williams, from Orland, Florida. Patrick came to stay with McBride in his teens to have the opportunity for better options. Through the guidance of his cousin, Patrick was accepted into University School in Ft. Lauderdale. During his four years at University School, he earned the title of Player of the Year and was recruited into Villanova University from which he graduated. Unfortunately, Patrick has been set back by a serious injury to his knee and has not yet been able to enter the NFL Draft. Twenty-two year old Patrick is clearly special to Steve. “He is awesome. Every day before a game, he goes and speaks to the homeless. He visits them and tells them not to give up on their dreams.” Coach McBride’s 13 year old son Keeven McBride is currently under his guidance through the Rebels and plays Running Back. No program would be complete without a legacy to continue it in the future. “I find great pleasure in my oldest son, 22 year old, Steven McBride Jr., working closely with me to build the Ft. Lauderdale Rebels and South Florida Sports Academy. Us working together is strengthening my family; thus strengthening my efforts.” “I have been coaching for 15 years but I have never coached in the city I came from. I had the chance to coach in Ft. Lauderdale. I turned down a head job in Davie to coach a team with ‘Ft. Lauderdale’ in the title. For the kid in Ft. Lauderdale, there is more of a need.” Placing his hand on his heart, McBride emotionally proclaimed, “I coach from the inside out; it works for me.” For more information about Coach Steve McBride, the Ft. Lauderdale Rebels or The South Florida Sports Academy call (754) 423-1613 or visit their website www. Leaguelineup/FTLRebels.com.
