What a wonderful summer this was. The beaches were full and still are as August winds down. September looks to be a continuation of this same pleasant atmospheric reality. What a super way for our kids to return to classes and their many engaging and creative extracurricular activities. This is the season of reorganizing and re-grouping – of falling back into those schedules and routines that summer seems to let fade away. Whether your child has just joined a daycare, social group or library program or has entered elementary school and enrolled in the activities that accompany growing older, you will probably feel the change of seasons, as the days get shorter and cooler. Fall always reminds me of family. The pumpkin patches, pumpkin carvings, hayrides, wonderful scents of apple and cinnamon and outrageous Halloween costumes. This season draws the family together like no other. Of course there are football and the holidays to bring everyone to the living room. It is a time when the family can be whole again, if even for just a day. There is just something heartwarming about Fall that no other season quite captures. I am also thinking of those of you with children in school. Some have just entered preschool or kindergarten, others have joined a new school and many have advanced to a new level. All of these academic and family milestones are memorable and should be kept that way. Record and enjoy them. They will be a part of your memory book for years to come. My belief is that there’s never enough good exposure to skills and alternative learning. Music, art, theater, athletics, enhanced learning centers, hand crafts, cooking, dance and martial arts, are all great programs for children to experience beyond their academic classes. It is hard to choose and limit activities as kids seem to love to participate in everything to which they are exposed. In the hustle and bustle of life, the challenge, you may find, is to balance your work and family schedules. Divide and conquer while acting as a team, always remembering to prioritize being together as a family at the end of the day. With so much happening throughout Fort Lauderdale, I know you will find S&A useful. You are at the heart of Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities directory. Every page features your friends and neighbors, and the events you want to enjoy. As you browse the pages of the directory looking for events to attend, activities in which to participate or medical providers, take a moment to enjoy the beautiful faces on every page. You may find someone you know looking back at you sharing their journey through their smile. The photo journal laid out over the pages tells the stories of our community. Your favorite places, your unsung heroes, and your children’s hopes and dreams. We encourage you to share your photos with us from the day you spent shopping at locally owned businesses, watching football, entertaining friends, or walking five kilometers for charity. After all, this directory is for YOU, the residents of Ft. Lauderdale Wishing you a great Fall Season!

Dear Neighbors:
8
I’m excited to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, Fort Lauderdale has been honored with the Playful City USA designation! Presented by the non-profit organization “KaBOOM!” in partnership with the Humana Foundation, Playful City USA is a national program that recognizes cities, towns and counties across the U.S. for exemplary efforts to increase play opportunities for children. Fort Lauderdale was one of only 241 communities nationwide selected to receive this prestigious award. You may not realize it, but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, today’s youth spend less time playing outside than any previous generation. This is due largely in part to the fact that only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. The resulting “play deficit” is having profound consequences on the physical, social, academic, and emotional development of our youngsters. KaBOOM! commended Fort Lauderdale for its commitment to addressing the “play deficit” through innovative solutions that offer children an opportunity to get off the couch and onto the field! An array of our Parks and Recreation programs were recognized including Wise Kids, the Presidential Fitness Challenge, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign, the Fit Kidz Club, and our numerous afterschool programs and summer youth camps, all of which provide hands-on opportunities to participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities, while promoting healthy, active lifestyles. As a Playful City USA community, Fort Lauderdale recently applied for and received two grants totaling nearly $30,000. This funding enabled us to purchase and install new playground equipment at Bryant Peney Park (2100 SW 4 Avenue) and build an entire new children’s playground at Poinciana Park (401 SE 21 Street). Both of these efforts would not have been possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers, neighbors, businesses, community organizations, and City employees, all of whom worked together to bring the projects to fruition and provide our children with two outstanding recreational facilities. In addition to the upgrades completed at Bryant Peney and Poinciana parks, the City recently opened Gore Betz Park, located at 1611 SW 9 Avenue. This marks the thirteenth new park the City has opened in the past decade to serve more neighbors and families, provide expanded recreational opportunities, strengthen our neighborhoods, and create vibrant, active public spaces. As you can see, we are busier than ever with no plans to slow down! We invite you to experience what a Playful City USA community is all about by taking part in one or more of the many sports and recreational programs, special events, and leisure activities described in this directory. By doing so, you can get more out of life, help build community, and make Fort Lauderdale an event better place to live, work, play, visit and raise a family. Very truly yours,
John P. “Jack” Seiler Mayor

THURSDAY-SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1- JANUARY 3 GREAT BALLS OF FIRE: COMETS, ASTEROIDS & METEORS EXHIBIT
MONDAY-SATURDAY, 10:00AM – 5:00PM & SUNDAY, NOON – 6:00PM. The Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning, with funding from the National Science Foundation and NASA, has developed a national traveling exhibition program called Great Balls of Fire: Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors. Great Balls of Fire explores the mysteries of these celestial objects. The threat of a catastrophic impact from an asteroid or comet is a staple of popular culture. If there was a dinosaur killer in Earth’s past, is there a human killer in our future? What are the chances and how do we assess the risks? For that matter, what are asteroids, comets, and meteorites, and where do they come from? These and many other questions are answered in Great Balls of Fire. Climb into a “spaceship” and blast off to the asteroid belt and Jupiter on a mission to gather data about asteroids and comets. Enjoy a display of art and artifacts that tell the story of comet observations throughout human history. Learn the size of the average rock in a meteor shower event (it’s smaller than you think!). See what would happen if asteroids or comets of various sizes hit your hometown. Use a variety of tests (magnetism, color, density/
relative weight) to determine if a rock is a meteorite (or a meteorwrong). Determine if clips from Hollywood films are Science Fact or Science Fiction. Build your own solar system, including asteroid belts and comets. $14 Adults $13 Seniors $12 Children (2-12). Museum of Discovery & Science & Autonation IMAX, 401 SW 2 St, Fort Lauderdale. (954) 713-0930.

f you’re reading this, you either have kids, or you are a kid. You probably already know that children are like sponges; they absorb everything they see and hear, so it’s imperative that parents place their child in a positive atmosphere. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu allows a kid to do so, but what exactly is Jiu Jitsu? As “AJ” Sousa (lead instructor at AJ Sousa BJJ, Ft. Lauderdale) explains, “Jiu Jitsu is a completely different martial art than what most kids in the U.S. have traditionally experienced. BJJ allows a child to work from the ground, gain control, and finish a physical conflict, without throwing punches.” Because of the rapid rise in Jiu Jitsu’s popularity in South Florida, many of the top competitors and instructors in the world have emigrated to the U.S., and several now call AJ Sousa BJJ “home.” As a frequent international black belt competitor, AJ Sousa surmises “the increase in BJJ’s popularity corresponds with the rising number of parents who want their children to be able to handle the negative influences prevalent in schools these days.” The increase in Jiu Jitsu enrollment may also be the result of parents who are determined to free their child from a cycle of video games and social media. Finding
the time to teach children a healthy lifestyle is sometimes a challenge for busy parents, like Rob Hyman - a Ft. Lauderdale attorney who trains with his son at AJ Sousa’s 4,500 square foot academy. Rob is adamant that “Jiu Jitsu burns calories, increases flexibility, betters balance and coordination, and improves strength and overall fitness.” He offers a warning, “Bad habits are hard to break once they’re established. Kids will spend hours on the couch, on their parents’ phones, or on their computers playing video games and being inactive. BJJ teaches your child, at a young age, how to live a healthy lifestyle.” Yet another parent, Christine McKenna (who trains with two of her children), concludes, “It’s just different than other martial arts. You have to see it for yourself. The kids participate in live sparring, oftentimes with stronger opponents. Because of this, kids develop a ‘never give up’ attitude.” AJ Sousa adds, “We never encourage children to fight if they have the option to defend and find a way out of the situation. But where physical confrontation is necessary, even our 4 year-old students are becoming proficient in takedowns, sweeps, and submissions of much larger opponents.”

rom the very beginning, Maisy seemed fragile, born 3 months early weighing 2lbs 4oz. She was a tiny thing but she came home without a breathing machine or monitor so we were overjoyed! She developed as preemies do, occasional earaches, etc. She talked early, went from sitting up to walking at 1 year, never crawling. To me she seemed advanced intellectually, but as she began spending time with other children in preschool/ kindergarten, she seemed uncertain and cautious with her movements. While the other children jumped, ran and rolled, she did not. She seemed afraid. I noticed she would easily fall or trip even when nothing was there. She did not seem to have control over her body and it took her two years of one-on-one weekly swim instruction to finally be able to swim on her own, and even then, not strongly. Another challenge was her speech. Strangers simply could not understand her. In school, her handwriting was a constant struggle and she complained of her hand hurting. We began having her take speech in school, which helped a bit, but not tremendously and after 3 years, the changes were slight. Because assignments and especially tests seemed to be a struggle for her eyes as well, I took her for an eye exam. She was prescribed glasses, a very small prescription. Months later, she was still complaining about her eyes. I took her to a different doctor with more advanced techniques and it turned out she did not need a prescription and her eyesight was fine. It was when she was not progressing in school for speech that I sought outside help; someone who could help her speech and handwriting, the two things I thought were the only issues. I found Eva at EPD Therapy and from the very first phone call I was truly taken aback by how much she understood Maisy’s challenges before even seeing her. I immediately scheduled an evaluation. It was Eva’s evaluation, of which I was able to watch, that suddenly shed so much light on why Maisy was having the challenges she was. I was elated. I selected 3 months of intensive therapy with the ultimate goal of Maisy being able to finally ride a bike, something that we had tried to teach her and failed for over 3 years. I think we were a month in when I picked Maisy up from school - she was beaming! “I did a push up in gym!” This doesn’t sound like a big deal to most, but to us
it was huge! I was truly seeing the results of her therapy. As time went on, the teacher commented that she wasn’t getting as tired during tests or rubbing her eyes. I saw her interactions with other children that she was becoming more outgoing physically and daring. I couldn’t keep her from jumping and running around the house, something she never did before. She suddenly wanted to help me carry groceries and especially gallons of milk; I could see not only was her mobility improving, so was her confidence. I was thrilled with her progress. Eva communicated and involved me every step of the way, making sure I was comfortable with her treatment. The best part is Maisy saw this process as just a fun place she goes every day! Fast-forward 3 months and Maisy is about to conquer riding a bike. Working with Eva and her staff at EPD Therapy was the best thing I have ever done for my daughter. She is still my sweet girl, but now she is someone who isn’t afraid to jump and run and she is no longer brought to tears at the thought of taking a test. Her speech has improved 10 fold, she is a confident proud child, and I owe this to Eva and her staff at EPD Therapy. I will be forever grateful.
Why are some children “clumsy” and what should parents do?
Watching your child bump into people, fall often, drop, break or spill things, struggle academically, avoid sports, and recreational activities, can be heartbreaking. In addition, when a child feels “clumsy,” it fosters poor self-esteem, impacts socialization, and may lead children into a less satisfying life-style. There are many reasons why children without medical diagnosis or neurological impairments seem clumsy. There is also a way to treat or even prevent this problem. Ideally, early detection of risk, followed by skilled intervention, serves as the best modality to decrease tendency, and can even prevent your child from ever becoming “clumsy.” Low muscle tone can be the initiator in causing developmental delays and prevent your child from participating in “floor time,” and completing necessary stages, such as crawling, that provide solid foundation for future motor performance. The importance of “floor time” and crawling cannot be underestimated in child development. These activities set the stage and help children develop adequate postural stability, balance, coordination, depth perception, and multisensory processing, required for all occupational performance tasks ahead of them. For new Moms, it is strongly recommended you attend “Mommy and Me” education classes to ensure your basic understanding involving your child’s development and facilitate completion of milestones. If you feel your child is at risk, or already demonstrates “clumsy” behavior, seek evaluation from an occupational therapist skilled in development and sensory integration.

he decisions we make on what to consume start within minutes of waking up in the morning. You know, with that little meal we call breakfast. Wonderful, glorious breakfast! Commonly referred to as the “the most important meal of the day,” breakfast is an opportunity to set the tone for the next 24 hours. And, with the emphasis we place on this particular meal, you’d think we would be spending more time actually planning what we consume, rather than just cramming down whatever’s in the fridge that day. So let’s start with some basic questions we all probably have. When should we eat breakfast? We’ve all been guilty of skipping breakfast from time-to-time. However, according to nationally recognized nutritionist and author Brooke Alpert, M.S., R.N., C.D.N., breakfast is a meal that should never, ever be missed! “When you wake up in the morning, you have likely gone at least eight hours without eating anything. Your stomach is empty and ready to consume,” said Alpert. “The longer you wait to eat in the day, the higher the chances are that when you do eat, you will opt for unhealthy foods. So, even if you aren’t hungry when you wake, make it a point to consume something healthy within two hours of being awake.” What should we eat for breakfast? What we eat for breakfast is perhaps the most important question on this list, according to Alpert. “Often, if you mess up breakfast, your day is done.”
So what should we really be eating to get the best nutrition to start the day right? “Focus on eating a meal that is full of protein and fiber. These make you feel fuller with fewer calories, so you start to burn off that stubborn fat without having to starve yourself,” said Alpert. Alpert’s grocery list includes eggs, Greek yogurt, oatmeal, nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.), super grains (quinoa, chia, flax, etc.), berries, spinach, and more. “I like to blend my ingredients into a smoothie or stop by my local Smoothie King store,” she said. “In fact, Smoothie King has an incredible line of Greek Yogurt Smoothies that are perfect for breakfast. My favorite is the new Peach Papaya Greek Yogurt Smoothie!” How much should we eat for breakfast? The key here is that calories should never be the focus. “Instead of spending time counting calories, focus on the nutritional value of the food items you are consuming,” said Alpert. “If you eat a 100 calorie waffle for breakfast, yes, it will be low in calories. However, you will not be getting the nutrition your body needs and you will likely find yourself hungry again within the hour.” Instead, let’s ask ourselves if what we are about to eat is high in protein and fiber. Is it on the list of grocery items that were mentioned earlier in this article? If the answer is yes, go ahead and chow down (in moderation, of course!) And, remember, a quick trip to Smoothie King will always be there to help keep you on track!

Celebrating diversity is a strong focus across our District. BCPS includes students from 204 countries speaking 135 different languages. Ensuring students have the necessary supports to be successful in their education is a priority. Last school year, the Chief of Staff for The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics visited BCPS to experience firsthand the critical work being done in our schools to meet the needs of English Language Learners. BCPS students can also participate in an array of magnet and innovative programs; earn industry certifications through the District’s rigorous Career & Technical Education programs; participate in dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, Cambridge – AICE, “First Move” scholastic chess at the elementary level, and much more. BCPS is also the first Florida school district to partner with the national organization, Code.org, to increase students’ access to computer science in schools at all grade levels. Computer science is a foundational career field, one that can open doors to new careers options for our students. Across our District, there are incredible opportunities for our students. We’re excited to have all of our students return to class on August 24, 2015, for another successful school year.

would like to welcome all of our students, parents and families to the 2015/16 school year. From our youngest pre-kindergarten students to our adult learners, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential. As your School Board member for District 2, I am honored to represent communities in southwest Broward County and proud of the incredible learning taking place in our schools. Across our District, there are many accomplishments for which we can take pride. Our students and schools are consistently honored – locally, statewide and nationally – for outstanding academic achievements. Most recently, U.S. News and World Report ranked 14 BCPS high schools as being among the best in the country, including West Broward and Charles W. Flanagan high schools. The Washington Post also ranked 29 of our high schools, including Everglades, Charles W. Flanagan, Miramar, and West Broward high schools, as among the most challenging in the country. Both rankings involve academic achievements and providing students with access to advanced coursework. Our schools also offer incredible fine arts programs, award winning debate teams and top ranked athletic programs.
According to U.S. News and World Report, 14 of our high schools rank among the Best High Schools in the nation. In addition, a majority of our high schools, 29 in all, earned placement on America’s Most Challenging High Schools 2015 list by The Washington Post. BCPS has a large and growing portfolio of opportunities throughout the District, including Montessori, Cambridge and STEM magnet programs; Kindergarten – 8th Grade Campuses; Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment; the largest JROTC cadet program in the nation with more than 7,500 students; innovative programs; the arts; technology and chess clubs; athletics; largest participating District in code. org; and mentoring groups, just to name a few. We also have the largest scholastic Debate initiative in the country, with Debate programs in every high school and expanding to include all middle schools. BCPS is committed to providing the very best educational experience possible to all of our students. As we begin this school year, I wish the greatest success for all of our students. I encourage students and parents to take advantage of all of the incredible educational opportunities available at our schools.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members:
42
As Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), I am excited about the upcoming start of the 2015/16 school year. We are looking forward to welcoming all of our students back to class on Monday, August 24, 2015. Across our District, there are incredible learning opportunities in place for BCPS students. From our rigorous academic courses and nationally recognized magnet programs – to our fine arts programs, athletics, and extracurricular clubs and activities – there is truly something for everyone. Schools are focal points in the community – bringing families, neighbors, businesses and civic organizations together for the common goal of ensuring our students have the resources necessary to be successful, not only in their education, but as productive citizens of our county, state, nation and world. As the sixth largest school district in the country and the second largest in Florida, we are working hard every day to achieve our vision of “Educating Today’s Students to Succeed in Tomorrow’s World.” Our core mission is to provide quality instruction, utilize research-based strategies and best practices, and provide supportive learning environments to help all students reach their highest potential. As the first in my family to graduate from high school and college, I know firsthand how education changes lives. It is our responsibility to afford students - from the youngest learners to our adult learners - with the skills they need to make their dreams a reality. At every grade level, we strive to energize our students and develop eager learners, who are ready to take on academic challenges. BCPS is a leader in the nation for innovative educational initiatives, such as: • Providing scholastic chess to all second and third grade students in the District. Scholastic chess helps improve students’ critical thinking, problem-solving and social skills. • Becoming the first Florida school district to offer computer science courses at every BCPS high school. Computer science is a foundational field that can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The basic skills can be applied and utilized in many different career paths. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts one in every two Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) jobs in the country will be in computing occupations, with more than 150,000 job openings annually. This makes it one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. • Expanding Career and Technical Education programs for middle and high school students. These programs provide students with the opportunity to earn industry
certifications in high-demand career fields. These are the same certifications used by working professionals. • Implementing debate programs at all of the District’s high schools. Through speech and debate classes, students learn research, logic, organization of ideas, and language skills, as well as social benefits such as increased self-esteem. • Expanding Personalized Learning Environments and Digital Infusion initiatives. Among these programs is the District’s award winning Digital 5 program, which utilizes laptops, digital resources, online instructional materials and other learning tools to maximize student learning. The District now offers Personalized Learning and Digital Infusion programs in multiple grade levels. • BCPS also offers Montessori, Cambridge-AICE, Dual Language programs and the largest JROTC cadet program in the nation. Education opens doors to the future. Ensuring our students are college and career ready is at the heart of everything that we do across BCPS. In 2015, The Washington Post ranked 29 BCPS high schools among “America’s Most Challenging High Schools,” based on the schools’ commitment to providing all students with access to advanced coursework. In addition, U.S. News and World Report recognized 14 BCPS high schools for being among the Best High Schools in the country. The 2015/16 school year marks a tremendous milestone for BCPS. It is our 100th anniversary of serving the students of Broward County. A variety of events and activities are taking place throughout the school year in honor of the many achievements of our students and schools over the last century and to celebrate the future of our school system. The District is also moving forward with the important work necessary to meet the most critical needs facing our schools, as well as make investments in music, arts and athletics. Over the summer, the initial phase of scheduled projects began as part of the SMART initiative. You can learn more about SMART by visiting our District’s website, browardschools.com. The list of accomplishments of the District, schools and students continues to grow throughout the year. I encourage you to learn more about what is going on at BCPS and all of the educational opportunities available at our schools by visiting the District’s website. Families, as well as the greater Broward County community, are vital partners in the achievements of our students. I am confident that by working together, the 2015/16 school year will be a successful one.

the country and gathering together united by the same love and passion for debate. Over the weekend, however, speech and debate became more than an extra-curriculum activity, both on a personal and social level. During the whole day, anyone could witness the interactions among the kids coming from different places and various backgrounds, eager not just to compete, but also to learn about each other’s experiences and cultures. Both Catholic and non-Catholic students shared common values and showed great respect and tolerance towards one another and towards the ideas and opinions of other faiths. St. Thomas opened its arms to all. The competition became a tool not only to increase one’s selfconfidence, but also to be open-minded towards a variety of ideas and ways of living. Ms. Trina Smith, called by her students “Ms.T.,” Program Manager for the Baltimore Urban Debate League, said, “This competition opens doors to so much more! It shows what’s beyond our own school and our own town. There is so much to see and learn, so many possibilities, and this experience at St. Thomas is giving the kids a great example: don’t be afraid to dream big!” The team from Pennsylvania was really impressed by the experience, as well. They all agreed they had the chance to participate in numerous tournaments all over the country, but were amazed by the great organization, the warm hospitality, and friendliness of the St. Thomas family. “You have spoiled us!” said one of the teachers accompanying the team. At the end of the day, winning or losing was not important anymore. The main achievement was being able to make new friends and develop lasting relationships. The day ended at the Hilton Marina Hotel, where everyone gathered to celebrate the Mass. Monsignor Kelly’s words were inspiring. He praised all of the dedicated kids, teachers, and parents attending this great event and he encouraged everyone to always do their best. “Be all that you can be!” he emphasized throughout the service. “Each of you has a gift. Be thankful for it and use it to its best potential.” The night might have been over, but those words and the new memories created will be kept in our hearts and follow us for many days to come.

aturday, May 22nd was a very special and busy day at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Months of planning and careful preparation, under the attentive guidance of Jennifer Kwasman, head of Forensics, Speech and Debate at St. Thomas, led to a memorable day for many students, teachers, and parents coming from all over the country for the National Catholic Forensic League tournament. The event was held between Nova Public High School and St. Thomas on Saturday, and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) on Sunday. Every year the competition moves to different locations. Last year it was in Chicago and next year it will be in Sacramento. This year St. Thomas was assigned as one of the main hosting schools for the Saturday competition. The whole school was well prepared to host over 800 people including students, judges, parents, staff members, and volunteers. The tournament brought teams from 81 dioceses in 37 states, such as Kansas, Alaska, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. The cafeteria became the gathering point for all students competing. Throughout the day, the kids had access to a variety of food, drinks, and snacks. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were served starting before 7:00 a.m. There, the students could relax while recollecting their thoughts and trying to get ready for their next round. The gym was tastefully transformed into the judges’ “headquarters,” where they could relax between rounds. After dropping their ballots, they had the chance to take a break and get ready for their next round. St. Thomas provided them with three hot meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus all-day freshly brewed coffee and cold drinks to keep them cool in the hot Florida weather. A variety of snacks helped to satisfy those little cravings between meals. St. Thomas staff and volunteers, always providing great service with a smile, made sure that everybody had what they needed. The St. Thomas students themselves were located throughout the campus ready to help with directions. Teachers, parents, and kids alike were proud of showing their school and making everyone feel welcome. It was very satisfying to see so many people visit from all over

estwood Heights Elementary (WHE) is an exceptional school that offers innovative programs and new opportunities every year in an effort to raise the potential for academic success of each of the 600 learners. WHE is dedicated to the idea that each child is provided a chance to excel and soar to greater heights everyday. Early academic developments in the areas of literacy and math have been proven to increase a learner’s capacity to experience success with more cognitively complex tasks in higher grades. Therefore, from a very young age, WHE provides families with an “Early Childhood Education Program” aimed at stimulating three and four year-old learners through educational play and engaging activities. The lessons are designed to help these young children interact with their teachers in an enjoyable manner that promotes social, emotional and intellectual growth. This program lays the foundation on which WHE early childhood teachers prepare their learners to soar into excellence. WHE also offers Science4Us, a new program for grades K through 2, where science becomes an instrument for hands-on instruction, captivates young minds and fosters an intense desire to explore the world in which they live. While future scientists engage in inquiry-based projects, technology serves to enhance discovery in all grades. This twenty-first century learning is delivered through the Digital 4 and Digital 5 programs for grades 4 and 5, as well as Innovations for Learning Grant for grades K and 1. These learning opportunities combined with scientific exploration give WHE learners the wings they need to soar confidently towards academic achievement. The school also partners with community stakeholders to offer special programs for

Through a partnership with Nova Southeastern University (NSU) teachers and staff members obtain continuous professional development designed to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of the learners. These sessions help teachers adapt pedagogy and behavior plans in order to give under achieving learners an opportunity to experience success. Additionally, WHE’s partnership with Memorial Health Care System and Community Youth Services, which includes the availability of a full time Social Worker, aids those children whose families may require unique services and connections to other outside resources. Community involvement is critical to school success; WHE avails itself to those community resources in order to ensure teachers and learners continue to glide smoothly across the horizon toward success. The summer may have just started, but at Westwood Heights everyone is already geared towards a new and exciting school year! Westwood Heights is united and determined to provide learners with the best opportunities for success. As the school Principal, Mr. Donald Cottrell says, “Together, WHE CAN… WHE WILL…SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS!”

Schools This new technology will allow students to test ideas without building them; saving time and giving real, dimensionally accurate motion to ideas. Team 744 would also like to raise the funds to build a second robot, allowing them to better compete with collaborative teams holding greater resources. Those teams often have multiple robots permitting practice with their machines between competitions. Mr. Stolley could not be more pleased with the direction his career has taken him. He relishes the process of brainstorming and development of the new mechanical creations each season. He values these moments stating, “I get goosebumps when a student launches to new levels of understanding and productivity.” Mr. Stolley recalls, “It’s about having a good idea then implementing and creating it to the best of their abilities.” Mr. Stolley is delighted with the success enjoyed by some of his former students. Many WA Robotics members have earned upper level education scholarships. Each year, $20 million is awarded to FIRST students who go into engineering and technology. WA students have been awarded a variety of independent scholarships and accolades as well. One student was granted a full ride through his PhD to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Another was named Outstanding Engineering Student at Cornell and a third is now a part of the Disney Imagineering team. Kent Stolley is looking forward to the new school year and all of the new opportunities it will bring for Team 744. For more information about how to become a team sponsor or mentor, please contact Mr. Stolley at (954) 771-4615 ext. 2220 or stolleyk@wa.edu.

hat better way to start off the summer than with a Family Fun Day spent outdoors with friends and family, good food, entertainment, and games for everyone! This is exactly what happened on Saturday, May 30th, in the backyard of McNab Elementary School. The very resourceful Mr. Burt Miller, supported by all the McNab PTA and staff, volunteers, and business partners, was able to organize a wonderful day, which ended with the much-anticipated car give-away. In fact, back in December, during the ”Breakfast with Santa” event, a brand new Nissan SENTRA SV was generously donated for the very first time in the State of Florida, to the McNab PTA by a very special business partner: Bob and Bobby Serpentini, owners of Performance Nissan in Pompano Beach. Since then, many raffle tickets were sold to raise money for the school, leading up to the announcement of the lucky winner! The day started very early for the organizers and volunteers, who worked really hard to make this day possible. By the time the first guests arrived, everything was ready. Many students took the stage to entertain the audience. Different music performances alternated with sports performances, like the McNab Chorus, the Northeast High School ROTC Color Guard, the Country Musician, Ashley Briggs, piano student performances under the guidance of Mrs. Aubrey, Violet Jeffries, Piano Singer from Pompano Beach High School, local Singer, Tatem Choate, the Velocity Karate demonstration, the Pro-Am
Dance Studio, the beautiful voice of Yiqiong Liang (from the TV Show “The Voice” in China - first time singing on US soil), and the joyful McArthur High School Band performance; the soundtrack of the day was energetic, cheerful, and exuberant. Games, water slides, bounce-houses, and vendors kept kids and adults busy with activities for all ages. At the end of the day, after a brief thank you speech by the different personalities present for the occasion, such as Rex Hardin, City of Pompano Beach Commissioner; Heather Brinkworth, District 3 School Board Member; Nora Rupert, District 7 School Board Member; Wanda Robinson, from the Office of Parent Engagement of Broward Schools; Mr. Bob Serpentini and his son Bobby Serpentini, owners of Performance Nissan; Burton Miller, PTA Vice President; Debbie Debrocq, PTA President; Clarice Johnston, McNab Elementary Assistant Principal; and Russell Schwartz, McNab Elementary Principal; the crowd moved right outside the main gate for the car give-away. With cameras capturing the moment and the TV station SFLTV 39 filming the final raffle, Mr. Serpentini himself had the honor of randomly picking the winning ticket. The three winning tickets were sold by students from the McArthur High School. It was a great day for everyone; the parents, the teachers, and especially the three winners! They are already planning great things for next year. We can’t wait to see what amazing surprises they will have in store for us!

or 15 seasons, the students of Team 744 at Westminster Academy (WA) has designed, built, programmed and piloted their creations at FIRST Robotics Competitions. At the beginning of each season, the team of 30-35 students begins the six-week process with the guidance of Robotics Instructor Kent Stolley, and a number of team sponsors and mentors. Students design and build robots in the school’s 800 square foot lab where they do the programing, machining and assembling. Following completion of the robot, the team practices and fine-tunes the robot before entering the competition circuit. Team 744 participates in five to six events per season where they have advanced to the finals and occasionally taken first place. Sponsors are paramount to 744’s success. One such sponsor is Apex Machine Company, a local business that builds printing presses. The company has been a sponsor of 744’s since their first season, assisting with some fabrication as well the shipping of the robot between competitions. Additionally, Gregg Coningsby, Apex’s Lead Engineer, mentors the team, often heading to the school after a full workday to mentor 744 well into the early morning hours. Altogether, the team has 14 mentors from the South Florida area as well as 15 corporate and 15 individual sponsors. Mentors and sponsors help the team in a variety of ways, such as providing funding or access to machines with computer-aided design software. Currently student’s access to CAD is limited. The school is on pace to add six new CAD computers during the 2015-2016 school year, thanks to their generous sponsors.

hurgood Marshall Elementary is the first elementary school in Broward County to provide our students the unique experience of attending a school with Health and Environmental Wellness themed instruction. All community stakeholders were invited to participate in the creation of a school theme that would catapult a new high interest, self-motivating academic instructional day for both students and teachers. Research has shown students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance (memory), and better classroom behavior. Exercise grows brain cells. Neurogenesis provides the brain more capacity to learn. Exercise benefits the brain first and changes the brain at a molecular level. The brain does not store or produce its own fuel. The brain relies on cardiovascular exercise to pump the oxygenated blood to the brain, giving it the oxygen and glucose needed for fuel. Exercise that increases the heart rate and sustains the elevation puts the brain and body back into balance and ready to learn! The Thurgood Marshall Elementary community stakeholders have created a unique school reform model that focuses on improving student achievement and guiding students to healthy living and fitness. During the 2015-2016 school year, interdisciplinary instructional units of study will integrate fitness, nutrition, health science, wellness, and environmental topics throughout our campus every day. The Health and Environmental Wellness theme will be a whole school program integrated into specials classes, the regular classroom curriculum and after care. The program
will include a daily 45-minute wellness class with regular opportunities for physical fitness and gardening for nutrition. A student fitness lab with state of the art equipment will be installed as part of the theme. Parents will be involved through weekend events such as a farmer’s market and family fitness challenge. We are very excited at Thurgood Marshall Elementary to provide this exceptional experience to our students and families. The Health and Environmental Wellness Theme will support our students as they matriculate to our zone middle and high schools. We feel this theme will ignite student interests as they begin exploring college and career options, which is unique at the elementary level. A special thank you to all our business partners! Community support will ensure our success. For more information about our school or becoming a partner, please contact Dana Thomson, Assistant Principal at (754) 322-7000 or dana.thomson@browardschools.com.
