hello Fort Lauderdale! as we say goodbye to summer and look forward to some cooler weather, i reflect upon the many positive aspects of living in Fort Lauderdale, a city that recently received the all-american City award. our city’s emphasis on education, health & wellness contributed to earning this prestigious award. i love that our community cares about the things that are most important to me and that embody what the sports & activities Directory is all about. The health and education of individuals and families in Fort Lauderdale is what we do-it is who we are. i loved seeing all of the families out and about this summer enjoying our many Parks & recreations facilities, beaches, summer camps, festivals, concerts, and other local activities. summer is a time for students to relax and take time off from their studies. it is always with mixed feelings that fall approaches and schools prepare for another year of education. The long, relaxing days of summer are replaced with busy, and sometimes stressful, days of school and sports schedules. as parents, we look forward to school being out for the summer, but we equally look forward to school starting in the fall. The break in routine is always a welcome change and the break in the summer heat is also something to look forward to! some children are about to enter preschool or kindergarten, and other students have graduated and are heading off to college. Many are entering the workforce after years spent in the classroom. Whatever stage our children are in, i hope that we have cultivated kids who are well-rounded and passionate about health and wellness. We are blessed to live in a city with unlimited opportunities for sports and activities with weather that allows us to be outside year-round. i encourage you to peruse our events Directory to find out what is going on in Fort Lauderdale this fall. if you need help locating the perfect sport or activity for your child, i recommend you read our sports Directory where you will find detailed contact information on a variety of local sporting facilities. Perhaps you need help locating a doctor or dentist? i know you will find our health Directory very helpful. Whatever your needs, we are here to serve you and to help make it easy for you to navigate the numerous benefits available to you as a Fort Lauderdale resident. i want to thank you for your continued support and positive feedback as we present to you our third quarter sports & activities Directory. We distributed fifteen thousand directories this last quarter to schools, businesses and Parks & recreation facilities throughout the city. Please be sure to share our publication with your friends and neighbors. We are still in the process of introducing ourselves to the community, and my hope is that every individual and household in Fort Lauderdale would look forward to our quarterly publication as much as we do! sincerely, Debralen Cula

Dear Neighbors:
8
The National Civic League has confirmed what millions of neighbors, visitors and community builders have known for years: Fort Lauderdale is an All-America City! Established in 1949, the All-America City Award recognizes cities, counties, towns, neighborhoods and metropolitan areas across the country for exemplary community-based problem solving and civic engagement efforts that involve public, private and non-profit entities. One of the areas cited by the National Civic League during the evaluation process was our outstanding Parks and Recreation Department. The League recognized us for an array of initiatives focusing on education, health and wellness. Parks and Recreation programs that were specifically commended for their success in promoting active, healthy lifestyles in youths and adults included: Wise Kids, the Presidential Challenge on Physical Fitness, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign and the Fit Kidz Club. In addition, the City’s afterschool programs and youth camps were lauded for providing homework help, tutoring, life skills, mentoring and healthy food and nutrition education, along with games, sports and activities to thousands of youngsters during the school year and throughout the summer. Our Parks and Recreation Department was also recognized for establishing a wheelchair basketball program at Carter Park, a wheelchair tennis program at George English Park, a walking club at Carter Park that attracts more than 1,000 participants a month, as well as hundreds of sports, recreational and community activities hosted during the past year at the City’s newly renovated $3 million state-of-the-art Orange Bowl Field at Carter Park. All of these programs embody the priorities encompassed in our Citywide Vision and Strategic Plan to be a healthy community that offers fun and stimulating recreational activities for our neighbors. Capturing the prestigious All-America City Award is a tremendous honor for us and a reflection of the teamwork, dedication and commitment exemplified by our staff, our neighbors and our community builders, all of whom are working together to make Fort Lauderdale an outstanding place to live, work, play, visit and raise a family. Congratulations to everyone on this tremendous accomplishment!
Very truly yours, John P. “Jack” Seiler Mayor

Oyster Obsessions Getting ready for OysterFest October 1–3 at G & B’s
By Shelley Jukanovich
M
y fascination with oysters began as a sixth grader while on vacation with my family in Long Beach, Washington, where I stumbled across an oyster with a prized pearl inside. We had stopped to have lunch in a bayside town and when I saw a pile of discarded oysters, I found myself sifting through them in hopes of finding a pearl. I never really expected it to happen, but when I picked up one particular oyster shell-there it was-a tiny iridescent pearl stuck to the inside wall of the oyster. I could not wait to bring it to Mr. McBride’s class for show and tell! Unfortunately, my prized pearl disappeared from that classroom never to be seen again. Apparently, one of my classmates found it as fascinating as I did. My fascination with oysters ended with the missing pearl. My first experience with a live oyster was not one of my fondest memories. My dad was shucking oysters on the stern of our boat and bet my siblings and me a two dollar bill that we could not swallow it raw. I had no intentions of even trying. My brother and his friend, Kevin, on the other hand, tilted their heads back and let the slimy thing slide down their throats. Kevin immediately ran to the side of the boat where that raw oyster was forcefully released into the sea where it belonged. No thank you! I would happily give up two dollars to keep my queasy stomach at bay. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I tried a cooked oyster for the first time. I chose a small oyster dredged in butter and closed my eyes to the unappealing mollusk. Surprisingly, the oyster was full of flavor. If I could just get past my need for my food to be aesthetically pleasing, I decided I might actually enjoy them. Oysters have gained popularity around the world, becoming an obsession to some. Annually, approximately two billion pounds of oysters are enjoyed worldwide. Oysters can be eaten raw, fried or cooked in a half shell. Casanova, the 18th Century Italian Lover, was said to have eaten over 50 oysters every day. Oysters are a well-known aphrodisiac, are nutrient rich and high in healthy amino acids and have been known to have a positive impact on reproductive success. Oysters are rich in calcium, zinc, and omega 3 fatty acids. Not only are they good for human consumption, they are good for gardens as their calcium-rich shells can be used to balance a soil’s pH. Oysters are filter feeders that can be found living
in large colonies in shallow waters. They remove bacteria, oil spills, and sediments from the world’s oceans. Each oyster is known to filter fifty gallons of water per day! There are thousands of different oysters falling under five main species: Crassostrea Virginica (Eastern American), Crassostrea Gigas (Pacific Oyster), Cassostrea Sikamea (Kumamoto), Ostrea Edulis (European Flats), Ostrea Lurida/Ostrea Conchapila (Olympic Oyster). Each species has a distinct taste and popularity varies from country to country. Richard Yordan, Head Chef at the G&B Oyster Bar in Fort Lauderdale, shares the following, “Oysters are such a beautiful, natural, sustainable product. Oysters are so elegant in their simplicity, yet they can have so many different flavors. They are awesome! Oysters are one of the only types of seafood that have books written about them. French poet, Leon-Paul Fargue said it best, ‘Eating oysters is like kissing the sea on the lips.’” I was impressed by Richard’s passion and knowledge about oysters and also by the Oyster Bar’s comfortable atmosphere and exceptional customer service. Blocking my past vision of raw oysters from my mind, I finally agreed to try one. Texture aside, the oyster was bursting with flavor. It was true-I could taste the ocean. It was like taking a mouthful of salty sea water with a hint of seaweed and the scent of ocean air combined. I will stick to cooked oysters, but at least now I can say I tried the raw version and survived! G&B’s employees, along with its sister restaurant, Coconut’s, employees appropriately wear shirts embroidered with the words, “Be Nice.” The friendly staff takes those words seriously and your dining experience will be such that I am confident you will become a regular. G&B’s will be hosting an OysterFest October 1st – 3rd. The event will feature various activities including: An oyster and seafood dinner, luncheon with live music and oyster shucking. General Manager, Tim Lane, invites you to join the staff and patrons of G&B’s as they celebrate their oyster obsessions. Call (954) 525-2421 for additional information. Only one in every ten-thousand oysters contains a pearl. The chances that I will ever find another pearl are highly unlikely, however, I can join the thousands of oyster-obsessed people who enjoy the rich, flavorful taste of this delicacy from the sea at homes and restaurants throughout the world.

ad weather reputation aside, the truth about Seattle is that it is one of the most beautiful cities in the Nation-especially in the summer months when precipitation is low. When people think of Seattle they tend to think of rain, but what they don’t realize is that when the clouds have lifted and the rain has subsided, a jewel of a city erupts out of the gloom: a city that has drawn travelers from afar and that has captured the hearts of its residents. Established in 1851, Seattle was first called New York, then New York-Alki, finally settling on Seattlenamed after a Duwamish Indian Leader named Sealth. Nestled between two bodies of water; the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, and surrounded by two breathtaking mountain ranges; the Olympics and the North Cascades, Seattle’s beauty is incomparable. Opportunities abound for both the outdoor enthusiast and the more culturally minded. Downtown Seattle offers a wide variety of entertainment including museums, art and cultural institutions, sporting arenas, and a variety of restaurants to please any palette. Home to the original Starbucks Coffee, Seattle is a coffee-lovers paradise. With either a Starbucks or other coffee stand on every corner, Seattleites are proudly addicted to the strong, rich beverage with its intoxicating aroma. Located in the heart of the famous Pike Place Market, the first Starbucks can be spotted by the long line of patrons waiting patiently on the sidewalk. Also found at Pike Place is the world-famous fish market where the catch of the day is literally thrown back and forth across the fish stand from employee to employee before landing in its final resting place of brown packaging. Just down from the entertaining fish throwing, are the most incredible bouquets of flowers, at such a reasonable price, that shoppers often leave with multiple bouquets in hand. To the South of Pike Place one can view the Seattle Great Wheel located behind the Seattle Aquarium. This Ferris wheel was the dream of businessman, Hal Griffith, and was opened to the public in 2012. Standing 175 feet tall, the Great Wheel extends beyond the end of the pier, where its gondolas hang over Elliott Bay. With a seating capacity of 300, the Seattle Great Wheel is the largest observation wheel on the west coast. Also visible from Pike Place is Mount Rainier whose snow-capped peaks awe visitors and Seattleites alike. Just a few short blocks away is Pioneer Square, Seattle’s original downtown. This attractive square boasts brick and stone sidewalks and buildings dating
back to the late nineteenth century. Pioneer Square is home to the popular Seattle Underground Tour that takes tourists through the original store fronts of Pioneer Square that were destroyed in the great fire of 1889. During the day, Pioneer Square is a popular location for internet businesses, art galleries, book stores, restaurants and coffee shops. In the evening, Pioneer Square comes alive with nightlife and often entertains, not only locals, but tourists and residents from neighboring cities as well. You can’t travel to Seattle without visiting the worldfamous Space Needle-built as an eye-catching landmark for the world fair of 1962. Located at the Seattle Center, about a mile northwest of Pike Place Market, the Space Needle resembles a UFO. The 605 foot Space Needle, boasts an observation deck that is not for the fainthearted. With inclining windows circling the Space Needle, the 360 degree view of the Emerald City is stunning to those who revel in heights. For those with a fear of heights, the experience can leave you grasping the back wall in a useless effort to avoid the panic of peering over the edge of the observation deck- take it from someone with a severe case of Acrophobia! Seattle Center is also home to the Monorail, Center House, the Pacific Science Center, The Children’s Museum, Experience Music Project, the Science Fiction Museum, Intiman Playhouse, KeyArena, McCaw Hall, SIFF Cinema, the Seattle Repertory Theatre, and the International Fountain. Year-round Cultural Festivals, as well as, Live Concerts and Productions keep the Seattle Center filled with life and activity. With so many attractions and so much to do, it is shocking that Seattle is best known for its rainy weather. Seattleites don’t mind too much- they would rather keep their Emerald City to themselves! When asked why she loves Seattle, local resident, Kristin Dorn, shares the following, “I love Seattle because you can get an amazingly rich and bold cup of coffee in the morning, drive an hour or so to a pristine and green mountain for a hike, be back for dinner at one of the cities amazing restaurants, and still have time to catch a unique performance or show, (or get the world’s best coconut pie at one of Tom Douglas’ restaurants).” Along with the best that the water and the mountains have to offer, and a diverse cultural experience that will keep you entertained for days, Seattle is a destination City. However, for those of you with Ombrophobia (Fear of Rain), your best bet is to arrange your vacation to include ‘Summer in Seattle’.

YIN YOGA It is the balancing practice for the other styles of yoga. In this style of yoga the focus is more on the deep layers of connective tissues. Most poses focus on the hips, pelvis and lower spine. This is a very restorative way to stretch without involving so much of the muscle, so we relax instead of contracting or extending deeply and just allow the stretch to happen by holding the yin pose. Everybody can benefit immensely from this practice, no matter what level of practice, age or physical condition. The evening is the ideal time of the day for this practice as after class you leave with a sense of calmness and relaxation that allows you to have a deep, soothing peaceful night sleep. Tuesdays, 6:30-8:00pm. Registration fees: $9 res/$10 non-residents, 10 visit pass $80 res/$ 90 non-residents. Beach Community Center, 3351 NE 33 Avenue. (954) 828 – 4610.

O
ut on the mats at American Top Team, Ft. Lauderdale is a group of 4 and 5 year olds “working out” in the best way they know how. They run, crawl, skip, wrestle and even drag each other across the mats. Throughout these rather intense activities, smiles and laughter abound from all of the children, all of them, including Silas a 4 year old amazing little boy with Autism who lights up the room. Before class starts, the children arrive and proceed to the toy area in the back of the gym where there are cars, games and other things to keep them occupied. They interact with each other, except for Silas who prefers to play quietly by himself. His mother Rachel Salgado joins me to tell me about their journey and calls Silas over to meet me. Begrudgingly he obliges, but, as is typical in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, he does not really speak to me nor does he make eye contact. According to his mother, Silas was diagnosed at 18 months. After a year and a half of intense Occupational, Physical and Speech therapy, he was still almost completely non-verbal, was unbalanced favoring one side and was only somewhat compliant. At age 3, Rachel decided to try something different, Mixed Martial Arts. After 2 months of MMA, Rachel took him out of therapy and had him solely in MMA classes. Rachel stated it was an easy transition. In therapy, Silas worked on mats doing obstacle courses, in MMA, he did the same.
By Kelly Wilson
At first, Silas spent quite a bit of time facing consequences for his behavior. Non-compliance is not acceptable in this class, even for a child with special needs. Silas is in a class with “typical” kids and the expectation placed on him is that he does what everyone else does. Today, a year later, just before class begins, I hear a confident little voice declare, “Class is about to start.” It was Silas, who was is the first one to line up. While I observe Silas in class, I see he makes eye contact with his classmates and instructors, something his therapist worked on with little success. He gives respect to his instructors, communicates and even jokes and smiles when appropriate. He looks to his instructor, Luis Medina, consistently for approval and affirmation. Rachel tells me, “He is a different kid on the mat” but she did not need to, it was clear by watching him. Since starting MMA classes at American Top Team with Mr. Medina and Master Junior, he has made progress some would find unbelievable. When class, which is about an hour, is completed, all of the children line up and shake hands. Afterwards, Silas gladly poses for some pictures for me with his instructors. It’s been a long day and Silas is ready to go now, but before he leaves, as he does every day, he is sure to look Master Junior in the eye, shake his hand and say, “Thank you.”

Fort Lauderdale S p o r t s & A c t i v i t i e s D i r e c t o r y | I s s u e 3 | August - October 2014
The sports landscape has changed dramatically since I grew up in
36
the 1960s. In some ways, it’s been for the better, with roughly 40 million children playing some form of organized sports each year. In some ways, it’s been for the worse, as studies consistently show that 70% of children drop out by the age of 13. Some of this attrition is understandable, when accounting for developmental factors, especially as a young athlete entering puberty. Interests change, with different sports or hobbies becoming more appealing. Peer influences play a part, with a natural gravitation toward what their closest friends are doing. Yet, the overwhelming reason is even simpler than that: Fun hasn’t been put first. That became clear to me over the course of my 20 years as a psychologist specializing in youth sports and parenting issues. I have encountered countless children who speak of feeling pressure to perform. Sometimes, that pressure comes from within but often it comes from coaches, parents and other adults who lack the proper perspective and live vicariously through the young athlete, placing their own desires first. As so many of these unfortunate situations came to my attention, I felt a need to reach a wider audience. After years of research and presentations, I connected with Ethan J. Skolnick, a long-time South Florida sportswriter now working for Turner Sports. During a four-year period, we interviewed more than 100 professional and Olympic athletes, then interspersed their youth sports anecdotes with time-tested psychoanalytic and developmental theory. It was important to us to include a wide-ranging list of athletes, from both genders, from a dozen different sports and from all sorts of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. We asked them what worked, what didn’t, and what they are doing with their own kids. What we produced was “Raising Your Game: 100 Accomplished Athletes Guide Your Girls and Boys Through Sports,” aimed at teaching parents, coaches and mentors how to be more attuned to the inner world of a child and how to help create the most enriching and enjoyable youth sports experience. Our conclusion? Environment needed to be one in which sports matter, because they provide a forum for self-discovery, physical health, sportsmanship, discipline, commitment, teamwork and resilience. It doesn’t matter so much that children should be pushed into playing or beyond their physical and emotional limits. Where children are given the best possible opportunity to succeed but are supported and instructed during those times they fall short and helped to understand they can always come back better. Where children are encouraged to make the most of their own particular abilities in order to fit into a team but are also empowered to dream about what, through dedication and perseverance, they can
someday become. Where adults show up, show interest, but also show restraint, remembering what it was like to be a child, and the fun was all that mattered. That’s often the easiest thing to forget, especially as a child gets older and the competition seems to be getting more serious: trophies, tournaments, travel, scholarships. At one point, every adult was a little more like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Not the James and Wade we know now as international icons, but back when they were kids growing up in Akron and Chicago, respectively. Their anecdotes became our book’s introduction, as they spoke – while still Miami Heat teammates in 2012 – about finding freedom, creativity, escape and joy in uncomplicated, unsupervised, improvised, innocent play. James loved kickball because “You didn’t need much. All you need is a dirt field and you can find anything to make as bases, and you just go for it.” Wade loved something called VBB because it incorporated volleyball, baseball and basketball and because, of course, he got good at it. “I was the one they always tried to find to shoot the shot,” he said. “So somebody would say, ‘one, two,’ and then throw it to me for three and I would shoot it. I was nice in the field. Yeah. Oh, I used to drain people! One, two, three! Wow! It was so fun!” The children you raise or coach probably will not become professional athletes of any kind, let alone of their caliber. Nor should that be the goal. Rather, help them feel how those superstars did way back when, when they were young, before they knew what they would become. Those feelings never went away. Neither will the challenges of youth sports. We hope this can be the start of an interactive dialogue about how to approach and overcome them. Check out our website (www.RaisingYourGameBook.com) or contact Dr. Corn at (954) 942-3344 & Psyd@DrAndreaCorn.com.

BROWARD CHILDREN’S CENTER
Brings Hope & Smiles By Kelly Wilson
F
ounded in 1971 by C.E.O Marjorie Evans, the Broward Children’s Center (BCC) is the only free standing acute skilled pediatric nursing facility of its kind in the South East Region of the United States. They house 36 of the most medically fragile children ages newborn to 21 in the U.S., some having traveled cross county via medical helicopter to be there. The facility started in a single classroom managed by volunteers and has blossomed to an 11-building campus including a staff of over 400 employees and 15 different programs, serving hundreds of children and families annually. Children come to BCC for a variety of reasons. Approximately 45% of the patients at BCC were “typical” children at one time. The have come to need the services of BCC either through a trauma, car accident, lightning strike or abuse. Some have become wards to the state as they have lost families in accidents or due to abuse. The facilities psychologist, Dr. Michael Carifio along with a case management team, provides counseling to all children to help them cope. Whatever the reason for a child being at BCC, there is a school and a program to help them. BCC offers Speech, Occupational and Physical therapies to all residents. Residents live two children per room and, regardless of their challenges, go to either public school or an in-house private school if they are not stable to travel. All the while, students build measurable goals to encourage success. In addition to attending school regularly, residents enjoy recreational activities, outings, and onsite activities with volunteers from the community. There is also a fully accessible playground donated by Ronald McDonald Charities with a sandbox, adaptive bicycles and a wheelchair swing. Despite their abilities, all children get to go through the motion of swinging and riding a bike. Residents in preschool and preschoolers from the community with and without special needs can also attend class in one of BCC’s 3 preschools. The Preschool North campus has a population of about 60 children, all with special needs. Children receive all therapies in school throughout the day, allowing them to spend their time at home enjoying their families. The Building Bridges and Preschool South (Dania Beach) campuses are integrated schools with typical and special needs children. In all the schools, children follow a mainstream preschool format with circle time and educational curricula. BCC is a state of the art facility. In the classroom,
students who are nonverbal are able to communicate with the teachers through head and hand switches. These devices allow children to communicate through a gentle touch, even when the most limited mobility is used to answer simple questions such as “yes” or “no.” Eye gazing devices such as the Dynavox and Eagle Eyes technology are used for other residents. These devices are used by either focusing on a panel of words with the eye or by the device using any part of the face the child can control and allows the computer to speak for them. In January 2013, an old storage facility was transformed into a multi-sensory and multipurpose recreation/class room. The technology in the room was donated by several community partners and includes color changing glass desks, sensory toys, books and more. The Broward Children’s Center Rec room also has a private separate space for Snoezlelen Therapy, one in only a handful of organizations in Florida that offers this type of service. This room is used to either calm or stimulate an individual with special health care needs. It is completely interactive and boasts a sensory board and aroma therapy. Currently, in the Center of Innovative Technology, the BCC is working with cutting edge technology to help adult Spinal Cord injury survivors breathe without a ventilator. The technology utilizes a small device called the DPS, about the size of a cell phone, which is implanted into the phrenic nerve. The DPS then sends signals which trigger the diaphragm to pace, enabling the individual to breathe. This device offers a greater quality of life by restoring taste and smell to the patient as well as the fact that they no longer have to be attached to a bulky ventilator. As previously mentioned, BCC does care for children who are wards of the state. Over the last four years, they have adopted out seven children. BCC hopes to help other children in their care find their forever families. The facility is able to move forward in their research and care through State and County funding, fundraisers such as their upcoming Annual Miles for Smiles Charity Walk in November 2014, as well as grants, in-kind donations and volunteers. For information on how you can help or work with the Broward Children’s Center, please contact Melissa Lane, Development & Corporate Relations Manager at (954) 943-2253 Ext. 104.

ina was a blond haired, blue eyed, slender woman in her thirties who worked for the US Postal Service, just like her mother and her father. She was not as fortunate as her parents though, because the stress in her job was much greater than in years past. In addition to the “going postal” workplace stressors, Tina had the audacity (or some might say the guts) to leave her highly dysfunctional relationship with her husband with two kids hoping for a better future for them all. Tina realized that one of the tragedies of our time is the all too common phenomenon of family strife and broken families. She also came from a generation where her own parents did not take time to communicate with her or with one another. They modeled a kind of stoic and long suffering partnership. They just stuck it out no matter if the relationship had already died a slow death years ago. In her family, there was an undercurrent of emotional pain and struggle consistently running beneath the surface. The silence between family members felt more like a silent scream experienced in a nightmare where you want to let go but nothing comes out. Mouths open, but no sound emitting, just the hollow pain of disconnection from self and others. Tina was an optimist, despite the divorce and her own family dysfunction, she decided to take time to repair the emotional damage from her past and prepare herself or a better relationship with her kids, now 8 and 12 years old. Now, more than ever, they needed her as they approached their teen years. She hoped it was not too late. She went to training in an attempt to first learn about emotional triggers. Sometimes there was tension between her and the kids. Eventually it ended up with somebody pushing some one’s buttons and getting the emotional triggers going in everyone. She wanted to learn about pushing each other’s buttons. One of the things she learned about triggers is everyone has them, they are just not aware of them until it is too late.
Tina also learned she had to work on her own emotional triggers before she could start pointing out the triggers in others. Tina laughed to herself, it was easier to see the emotional triggers in others and not so easy to see them in herself. She learned in the training that one of her triggers was work related. She had been working too much and playing too little. She was using it as a type of escape. Tina realized she had kept saying this would change, but she was finding herself more isolated and less social. Now she could see where her 12 year old son was getting this behavior, ouch! They were both spending more time with their computers than with people. She began by staying off the computer and taking more time to check-in with the kids. She also brought all the computers in the family room so that she was with them while they were online. Each night, 30 minutes before bedtime there were no more electronics. At first, the kids protested but she softened the blow with some homemade snacks and asked them to give her a chance to re-connect with them. Tina confessed she had missed them with all the stress of the divorce. She also spoke to them about her own struggle in a “kid friendly” way so they could hear her without putting the emotional baggage or guilt trip on them. Tina told them about discovering her own emotional triggers. She confessed she had been isolating too much on her own computer, her son looked at her with shock, holding back tears, and confessed he was doing the same thing. They laughed at the confessions and with some relief began the slow process of healing themselves before it was too late. Tina found a great family counselor and instead of pushing each other’s buttons they all began focusing on common interests instead of differences, and working on listening to one another more effectively. When Should My Child Begin
Orthodontic Treatment? A
lthough an orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time to begin orthodontic treatment which depends on the problem they have. The American Association of Orthodontist recommends all children see an orthodontist by 7 years old. Some problems are best treated early and some are best treated later depending on the problem. Dr. Ferrer is conservative and only recommends early treatment when it is necessary and cannot wait. A complimentary consultation will let you know what your child’s orthodontic needs are at this time. Top 10 orthodontic problems that require early interceptive treatment: 1. Early or late loss of baby teeth 2. Thumb sucking 3. Inadequate space for erupting teeth 4. Crossbite
5. Underbite 6. Open bite 7. Missing teeth 8. Excessive spacing or crowding 9. Tongue thrust 10. Facial asymmetry

T
hat is the mission which every Broward County Public School is focused on achieving! As the parent of three children in elementary and middle school, with different strengths and interests, I understand how important it is that we provide our students with diverse opportunities which help them to be motivated to apply themselves and reach their individual, highest potential. This year Broward County Public Schools is offering opportunities that we haven’t seen before. For the very first time, over 90% of our elementary schools will be offering the First Move Chess program to our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. Each student will receive lessons in how to play chess, receive a free chess set and be given the opportunity to participate in chess competitions. Additionally, schools will be continuing to implement the Digital 5 program in which approximately 3,200 fifth grade students from 27 elementary schools across the District receive personalized learning utilizing laptops, digital resources, and online instructional materials. Code.org, which selected Broward as the only school district in Florida to participate in their unique program, was first instituted in our elementary through high schools in the 2013-2014 school year. Continuing our partnership with Code.org provides expanded computer science programming instruction throughout students’ educational experience allowing them to garner a competitive edge among their peers for high-demand and high-salary computing professions. This is critical as, in the year 2020, it is estimated that there will be one million more computer
science jobs than computer science students. On the heels of Broward County Public Schools being awarded the national District Sustainability Award and 48 of our schools being honored with Green Ribbons from the U.S. Department of Education, students are being awarded an ever-expanding opportunity to increase Eco-Awareness through expanded recycling programs, community gardens and energy conversation initiatives. The School Board is making a considerable investment in the Arts throughout the 2014-2015 school year. The District is currently purchasing new and repairing existing musical instruments while also supporting its drama programs through the purchase of staging equipment, lighting and sound equipment and other capital improvements which will allow our students to flourish in their personal development through exposure to the Arts. Expanded sporting programs, at the middle school level, further allows us to reach each child by tapping into the activities which they are passionate about and motivate them which will result in their further engagement in success in-and-out of the classroom. I hope you will join us for the upcoming Broward County Public School’s 3rd Annual Ed Talk discussions that are focused on shaping the District’s priorities, which allow us to continue to strive for the highest-quality school system for our Broward County children. Visit www.browardschools.com to find the location and time for the Ed Talk event that will occur this Fall. Our entire community must be engaged to ensure that we attain our goal of allowing every child to reach their highest potential!

Fort Lauderdale High School’s Class of 2014 (the 99th class) at the Commencement Ceremony.
F
ort Lauderdale High School is a very special place, but this year marks an extraordinary time for the school. The 100th Class of students will be graduating from Fort Lauderdale High this spring. Principal Ribeiro shared, “the students are looking forward to celebrating this milestone and meeting many of the alumni that are so proud of being part of the rich tradition and history of Fort Lauderdale High School.” Back in 1915, the graduating class consisted of five boys. The school was located three blocks east of Andrews Avenue adjacent to Stranahan Park. The school was also referred to as Central High School because of the large area it served. Ten decades later, the school is set to graduate close to 500 students this year and is finishing up a massive renovation project that will modernize the beautiful campus located in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The new renovations include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Administrative Resources buildings. These buildings include a modern Emergency Responder classroom and a state-of-the-art Culinary Arts laboratory. The school has been a leader in academic excellence and has received an “A+” rating from the Florida Department of Education for the past three years. FLHS boasts a 92% graduation rate compared to a
state graduation rate of 75%. Students are drawn to Fort Lauderdale High from all over the county for the rigorous Cambridge and Pre-Law Magnet programs. These programs continue to enhance the curriculum and challenge students to reach their fullest potential. Students in the Law program participate in Mock Trials at Nova Law School where they provide feedback to recertifying lawyers. Students in the Cambridge AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) Programme can earn the Cambridge Diploma, which is accepted in 167 countries. In addition to earning up to two years of college credit, these students are eligible for the highest level of Bright Futures Scholarship. All of the students at Fort Lauderdale are enthusiastic about the celebratory year that will be highlighted by many events that allow them to interact with alumni and community members. There is a Homecoming Gala planned for alumni, a dedication of the new buildings, and special events for the students that will be capped off at the 100th Graduation Ceremony in June. The school is looking for any community members, alumni or parents who are looking to be involved in the celebration during the year. Please e-mail Sean Curran at sean.curran@browardschools.com if you are interested in joining the celebration.
Welcome Back to School! Patricia Good; Chair, Broward County School Board, District 2
I
t is my hope that you are enjoying a relaxing summer. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential. As the Chair of the School Board of Broward County and the Board Member representing District 2, I have had the pleasure of visiting many schools - witnessing first-hand our students enjoying much success. Over 15,000 high school students and 8,300 middle school students participate in organized school system sports. It is exciting to report that fifty percent of our athletes are female. With the recent addition of girls flag football and competitive cheerleading, the school system is a recognized national leader in gender equity, ensuring equal opportunities for our female athletes. Many of our students volunteered countless hours, giving back to their schools
and their communities, demonstrating a true commitment to the betterment of others. This was truly evident by the numerous events held at our schools. Relay for Life events raised funds for cancer research, the DiaBEAT This! event allowed students to have fun and raise funds for diabetes research, and a food-packing event provided 15,000 meals for orphaned/homeless children in the USA. We celebrated many successes in the 2013-14 school year and I would like to thank our dedicated teachers, support staff, school administrators, parents and community partners for making that possible. It is the goal of BCPS to ensure that every student receives the very best instruction in pursuit of becoming a well-rounded individual. As the 2014-2015 school year begins, I look forward to another amazing year as we continue to strive to achieve that goal. Enjoy these last days of summer. I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming school year!
