Happy Holidays to all of you! Whether it be Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or “Festivus” (thank you Kramer from Seinfeld), this season is about giving! I am not referring to the newest video games or toys, nor about perfectly wrapped, excessively indulgent presents. This season is a reminder to all of us that giving is about the selfless act of doing good for those less fortunate. In our 16 years of publishing, we have been actively taking any opportunity to spread the good word by spotlighting so many individuals, organizations and families who generously do good for others. This issue is no exception, and I truly hope that while giving presents is our past time during the holidays, that you take an opportunity to teach your children to give back, involve themselves in philanthropy, and learn how to experience the joy and cheer in helping others in need (as the above quote reminds us). Please take a look at our Clubs & Organization Directory in the Around Town section to find something your family can do to better our communities. Harvest Drive is one unbelievably successful organization where 100% of donations go to feed, clothe and help the people right here in Broward County. Working through schools, they are able to access families who are most in need. Supplies and donations are funneled to them directly with the help of thousands of students collecting, sorting and packing. We have provided all the information you need to help in the two page article featured in this issue. Please consider getting involved this season. Whether your family is well off, making ends meet or struggling, there is always

Teach the fundamental act of giving at a young age and it will yield a lifetime of purpose and responsibility family, not just during the holidays, but all year long. Dear Readers, Recently a letter was sent home to the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School parents and students from the City of Pembroke Pines Police Chief Dan Giustino reminding them the severity of making threats to do violence in a school. someone, the police department is taking every threat seriously and is evaluating each threat to determine whether a crime has been committed. I strongly recommend that parents talk to their children and advise them on the life altering consequences these threats can have on their chances of getting accepted into college, joining the military and/or passing a background check for a potential career all because of a prank or joke. Reality has shown us that violence does occur in schools throughout the country, so law enforcement has an obligation to follow through on every threat. So, parents, please make sure your children understand the seriousness and consequences of such threats. One fake threat is one too many. Threats are not jokes. On a happier note, I am pleased to report that the City of Pembroke Pines was the highest ranked city in Florida in the Wallet Hub report on 2018’s Best & Worst Cities to Raise a Family. Pembroke Pines was also the highest ranked city in Florida on Wallet Hub’s Hispanic Entrepreneurs list, ranking #6 out of 182 nationwide. I’m not surprised. We have a great city! We also have a very generous city. For the past 15 years, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center has joined with schools, businesses and residents to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines Community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time very special. Thank you to all who donated. I hope to see everyone at this year’s Veterans Day Observance on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Memorial Park located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center to honor our country’s veterans past and present. And, I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

Ah, the excitement of going back to school! New
classrooms, new teachers, new friends and classmates… not to mention new back packs, supplies, shoes and uniforms. For many children, the latter would not be possible, were it not for the Broward County Back to School Extravaganza. And this year, over 7,500 students benefited. $35.00 is all that is needed to outfit a child with what they need to start the school year off on the right foot. For the eighth year, the Children’s Services Council issued a challenge grant to fund back-to-school supplies for students identified by School Board Social Workers and community partners as being economically disadvantaged. Dozens of foundations, corporations, non-profits and individuals stepped up to provide appropriate funding and logistical support to ensure the success of the campaign. Four distribution events took place over two weekends: on July 28th at New Renaissance Middle School and Dillard High School, and on August 4th at Blanche Ely High School and Hallandale High School. As thousands of people lined-up to participate long before the gates opened at each venue, it was clear that the need is great and that events such as these are badly needed to ensure children
begin their school in the best of circumstances. “The kids are very happy and we are very thankful for everything that you are doing for the families here today,” said a father participant at Hallandale’s event with his wife and four children. “This is a great event. I particularly appreciate the new shoes and the book distribution,” said another parent at Ely. Hundreds of volunteers ensured smooth operations throughout. Robust resource fairs added to each family’s ability to receive materials, information and resources, including immunizations, eye exams, KidCare insurance and much more. DJ’s, face painting, games and snacks provided for a carnival like atmosphere, fun for the whole family. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies were also instrumental in ensuring friendly but effective crowd control support and overall smooth operations. The work of the Back to School Extravaganza committee will begin again early in the new year, as we look to continue making the beginning of the school year an exciting and rewarding time for all children. For more information on this program and the Children’s Services Council, go to www.cscbrowad.org.

The loss of a loved one is a devastating event in our lives. Why would we
want to think about it or have to plan for it? Because if we don’t think about it, we won’t have to deal with it...but then the time comes. The last thing you want to do when you are grieving is plan the details of the service and make so many important decisions. I want to share my experience with you. I remember years ago when my friend’s mother passed away, he told me he had a conversation with her long before. She was able to tell him everything she wanted down to what she wanted to wear. So, he knew exactly what to do. When my dad passed away, I was living in Florida for about three years and I had no idea what to do. I had to call someone in New York. They told me to call Boyd- Panciera Family Funeral Care. Well, I must say I am so glad I did and here’s why. Boyd-Panciera sat with me and my family and guided us every step of the way. They treated us like family and did everything for us making a difficult situation so much easier. Another important thing is they made my dad look like my dad. The Boyd-Panciera staff made it more of a celebration of life than a funeral. They asked me for some photos and a song and they put together a wonderful video for us. I must confess I often still watch it because it makes me feel closer to my dad. After that, I decided to make prearrangements for my Mom. I made monthly payments and everything is paid for. This way if prices go up, my prices are locked in. They have various payment plans that will fit everyone’s budget.
By Linda Lombardi
Then when my Uncle Frank (my Dad’s twin brother) came to live here, I did prearrangements for him. When the time came and he passed, I made one phone call to Boyd-Panciera and they took care of the rest. I had to go in to bring his clothes and some pictures and things I knew he wanted. They did the celebration video and everything I asked for in our prearrangement meeting. When people would stop by to pay their respects, they commented on how nice the service was. I know that sounds crazy, how nice can a funeral be? But, again, Boyd-Panciera focused on the celebration of his life, not his death, and that was a huge comfort for his family. We had to fly Uncle Frank back to New York since that is where he spent most of his life and those were his wishes. He had given me the funeral home he wanted in New York. Let me tell you, it was nothing like Boyd-Panciera. When I walked in it was depressing, totally different and not very pleasant. Now I am ready to do my own prearrangements. I feel like it’s a gift, so the burden in not on my son. They also offer “Wings of Hope” which is a Bereavement Support Group for those who need some help coping with their loss. I hope my experience opened your eyes to how important it is to do this for our loved ones. Prearrangements are a gift to those left with the loss. Call Tiffany Panciera at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care to schedule an appointment (954) 243-8223. They have two locations in Broward County, Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. Please visit their website for a full overview of their services www.bpfamilycare.com.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that for the 5th time its Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery was nationally ranked by US News and World Report among the best hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in the country. We sat down with Dr. Matthew Fazekas, FAAP, CAQSM, a pediatric sports medicine and concussion specialist to discuss current trends in pediatric orthopaedics. Why is it so important that kids see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist? Kids are not little adults. They have open growth plates and normal developmental changes that may be occurring during the course of treating an injury. Seeing a specialist with training focused on the pediatric athlete can get them back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Who is best qualified to take care of young athletes who suffer a concussion? Concussions may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, or neck or by an indirect blow elsewhere on the body with an impulsive rotational force transmitted to the brain. This impact results in the rapid onset of impaired neurologic function that resolves on its own. The resolution of symptoms typically follows a sequential course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.7 million individuals sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI in the United States every year. Individuals may suffer multiple traumatic events, especially if playing contact sports. The annual incidence of sports-related concussions in the United States is estimated between 1.6 and 3.8 million. Concussions occur in all sports; the majority of concussions occurring in organized sports are sustained in football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The care of athletes with sports-related concussions is ideally performed by
healthcare professionals with specific training and experience in the assessment and management of concussions. The sports medicine physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are frequently involved in the care of patients with concussions and are specifically trained to provide care along the continuum of concussion from management of the acute injury to return-to-play decisions. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic was developed as a multi-disciplinary center for pediatric patients with TBI that streamlines access to care to subspecialties including neurology, neuropsychology, and vestibular therapy in addition to sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Is there anything an athlete can do to prevent concussions? Strengthening the neck musculature has been shown to decrease the risk of concussions. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that helmets, mouthguards or headbands can prevent concussions. Do dancers require specialized care after trauma or for overuse injuries? Dancers and performing artists speak a sport specific language and may require specialized treatment that takes into account their activity. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s pediatric sports medicine program [U18] Sports Medicine developed a Performing Arts and Dance Medicine program centered around getting these athletes back into the studio in an expedited fashion that doesn’t involve only rest. With former company physicians from the Boston Ballet, our team speaks the language which helps quickly and accurately make the diagnosis and get the appropriate treatment plan started. For more information call 954 – 265 – 6300 or JDCH.com/ortho. Locations: Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Hollywood, Miramar, Wellington (2019), Weston.

f you’re a Gen-X or Millennial household, there’s a looming monthly expense you may not have included in your budget: the cost of caring for aging parents or extended family. A March 2018 study from a major U.S. life insurer, titled “Financial and Lifestyle Costs of Caregiving” found that three in ten Americans are either presently serving as caregivers or have done so in the past, while one in five expect to do so in the future. Caregiving was defined as “a situation where you are responsible for providing care – or the resources for that care – to someone or several people over a substantial period of time.” Caring for elderly family members is not a new social trend. What is different, at least in the United States, is the extent to which caregiving may become the norm for successive generations. According to the report, “Gen X and even Millennials are the heart of the sandwich generation and struggling with the pressures of caring for aging family members and their own children while building financial security and maintaining a lifestyle.” Older Americans: Living Longer, Living Alone - In the past, caregiving duties were primarily managed by spouses; wives cared for aging husbands, and vice versa. But a range of demographic and social changes have altered this dynamic. A November 2016 report from Kaiser Health News points to increased longevity, a large and graying baby boom generation, the decline in marriage, the rise in divorce, increased childlessness and family mobility, as factors that have “upended the traditional caregiving support system.” As a result, “Americans spend less time than ever in a married state,” says Susan Brown, a sociologist from Bowling Green State University. Data from the 2015 U.S. Census reports that 43 percent of those 65 and older now live alone. And these aging single adults often have limited family connections to tap for caregiving assistance. Jonathan Vespa, a demographer for the Census, sums it up: “As people have fewer children, there are fewer people in that next generation to help take care of the older generation.” Younger Americans: Staying Single, or Marrying Later - Changes among younger generations affect the caregiving dynamic as well. More young adults are staying single, and those who do marry
are waiting until their late 20s. Both factors impact the younger generation’s caregiving abilities. Single households don’t have the economic efficiencies that usually come from marriage, i.e., two providers under one roof. And when married couples have children later, it makes the “sandwich” of simultaneously caring for both aging adults and growing children more likely – and more likely that caregiving will not be just an emotional and time commitment, but also a financial one. The Financial Impact of Caregiving - The “Financial and Lifestyle Costs of Caregiving” report found that approximately seven in 10 caregivers provide financial support. Support ranged from modest amounts, like paying co-pays on medications, to major lifestyle changes, like caregivers switching from full-time to part-time employment. Experienced caregivers reported making the following adjustments to provide financial assistance: • 67% Reduced living expenses • 25% Withdrew money from non-retirement savings • 21% Worked more, including additional employment • 21% Borrowed money • 19% Withdrew money from retirement savings • 19% Cashed in or sold assets • 17% Stopped or reduced contributions to non-retirement savings • 15% Stopped or reduced contributions to retirement savings Reading between the lines, many of these caregivers resorted to more than one of these options; i.e., besides reducing living expenses, they worked more, or borrowed money. The harsh reality: In almost every circumstance, caregiving exacts a toll on the personal finances of the caregiver.

his day and age’s popular orthodoxies hold technology to be an unmitigated good. Nowhere is this praise more lavish than with mobile phones, particularly smartphones. What they represent can be described as a revolution; almost every element of daily life has changed in their wake. Education in particular has seen the multifarious effects of them on the youth and in the classroom. Undoubtedly, cell phones have improved communication immensely. After all, as an eMarketer poll reveals, the number of U.S. consumers with cell phones grew from 50 to 200 million in the period between 2010 and 2016. Another poll from the same agency shows 91 percent of the 12-17 population own a phone, with the number falling in older cohorts. Doubt, too, has been eradicated by the onslaught. With only a brief search, handheld devices are now able to answer the vast majority of queries. Computers have been hailed in this regard as great facilitators of knowledge, but they are comparatively unwieldy, requiring a physical connection and many times more space. Phones, however, are not without disadvantages. As they enter classrooms, idealized notions fall prey to the reality of students’ actual use. “Phones have had both a positive and negative impact,” said sophomore Kevin Mosley. “When used properly, they enhance learning, but without self-control, phones can start to become a distraction.” For all their virtues, cell phones present a challenge in the social and academic realms. In fact, these great depositories of information are also able to produce
T
he 2018/2019 school year is off to a phenomenal start at Pembroke Pines Elementary (PPE). Our students are excited to be back and our faculty and staff are happy to have them back. Classrooms have been hustling and bustling with exciting and engaging lessons and our school is filled with joy and love on a daily basis. We celebrated Peace Week from September 17th to September 21st. During the week, our school counselor, Mrs. Donate engaged our students in a variety of activities centered around peace and kindness. As we work to address the social and emotional needs of our students, our school’s Peace Week activities fully promoted our district’s vision of putting social emotional learning at the forefront of student learning. Students participated in a door decorating contest, making “keys to peace”, participated in a district wide minute of silence, recited and signed the “Growing the Seeds of Peace” pledge. On Friday September 21st, our entire school community wore white for peace in culmination of all the activities we did to celebrate and promote peace and kindness throughout our school. We transitioned from Peace Week into “Start with Hello” week on September 24th. This is another district initiative as a part of the Sandy Hook Promise. Students participated in daily activities that were intended to reduce and eliminate the number of students experiencing social isolation. Our Peer Counselors/SAVE Promise Club created posters promoting the Sandy Hook Promise Message. During the week students participated in “Hey Day”, “ The Start with Hello Photo Booth”, “Make a New Friend Day”, No One Eats Alone Day”, and “Random Acts of Kindness Day”. Students were able to gain a new perspective and fully embrace what it means to
objectionable content and desensitize their users. Even the youth, who hold the most positive view of technology, are less secure in their defense of phones. A West Broward High School poll showed that 80.5 percent of students held a positive view of the effect of technology on their lives, with the number falling to 70.4 percent when asked about phones in particular. Teachers, too, recognize them as double-edged swords. “I believe phones are a necessary or important tool for education, but only when the teacher has a lesson geared [towards them]. Otherwise, the phones should be out of sight and not in use during instruction time,” said AP Human Geography teacher Dennis Rodrigues. This aside, the effects of phones on classroom performance are evident. Indeed, an Ohio University study found that students who did not use their phones in the classroom “were able to recall more detailed information from the lecture and scored a full letter grade and a half higher” than those that did. Other studies have found that socialization is increasingly conducted online at the expense of face-to-face interaction. “I think technology has had a positive impact on my academic and social life; it has engendered a new era of convenience and connectivity,” Mosley said. “As long as you use it in moderation, it’s a very helpful tool.” West Broward High is located at 500 NW 209th Avenue. We are committed to meeting the challenges that many of our students face on a day-to-day basis. Our teachers will continue to incorporate activities into their daily lessons that will teach our students how to be compassionate and tolerant of others. SCHOOLS in a week’s worth of activities. For example, we will have a “No One Eats Alone Day” and a mixed grade social to foster a sense of community and responsibility towards one another. Of course it all starts with our teachers! Fortunately for us, here at Silver Palms, our terrific teachers are champions of kindness! Finally, we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week! During Red Ribbon Week, our students learn to be kind and respectful to themselves by taking care of their minds and bodies by steering clear of drugs! Students will be taking part in activities that teach them about the dangers of drugs and how to assertively say “NO” to those who might try and influence them to take drugs! With all of these wonderful and engaging activities, we are teaching our children to be champions of kindness to themselves and to one another! Without the support of our teachers, parents, and community members, we could not accomplish our goal of spreading the message that “Kindness Counts”! We are very grateful for our tight nit Silver Palms Community! It is with this type of hard work and dedication from all of our children, teachers, and parents that we are also once again an “A” school! Silver Palms Elementary is located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue. e are kicking of the year with kindness here at Silver Palms Elementary! Our campaign began with an assembly in the cafeteria bringing awareness to our students about the importance of standing up to bullies and being kind to one another! Our children shared their experience and advice on how to deal with a bully! They also learned that compassion goes a long way! Furthermore, we were excited to welcome the NED Show to our school! NED shared the message that spells his name and provides our school community with principles to practice that support our goal of cultivating kindness this year! N – Stands for Never Give Up; E – Stands for Encourage Others; and D – Stands for Do Your Best! In September, we celebrated Peace Week by giving each child a “Gift of Peace” card to kick-off the week! Each card reminds students to give the “Gift of Peace” by standing next to or speaking-up for someone in trouble. Our students also created “Peaceful” works of art using chalk as a medium. We ended the week with a celebration of “Peaceful Pinwheels” to remind our students how important it is to be channels of peace to one another! To further spread our message of kindness, we are joining forces with the Sandy Hook Promise movement! Our students will become more aware of the importance of making everyone feel like a valued member of our school community by engaging

eimagining Middle Schools is a district-wide initiative aimed at ensuring all students are literate, emotionally healthy, and academically successful, within a safe learning environment. Teachers and staff at Silver Trail Middle School have accepted the district’s challenge to reimagine the middle school experience. Fourteen teachers participated in intensive professional development over the summer aimed at one specific piece of the initiative’s goals—emotional health. The teacher’s cadre participated in the Social Emotional Learning professional development course centered around Conscious Discipline. Conscious Discipline, developed by Dr. Becky Bailey, focuses on both the internal and external emotional states of children to help promote self-awareness, self-regulation and seeks to foster better relationships with teachers as well as peers. The unveiling of the Conscious Discipline has been an eye-opening experience for teachers and students alike. After introducing Conscious Discipline to the entire STMS staff, Mrs. Daise, our Guidance Director, along with cadre members have started a book club that focuses on Conscious Discipline. The Conscious Discipline cadre has grown from the original 14 to now having 22 teachers. During the book club time, teachers review and discuss chapters, implement specific strategies and then they report back to the group. Many have commented on how some of the activities have positively transformed their

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!
s the 2018-2019 school year started in August, Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory are proud to introduce you to the first quarter Academic Superstars. Jake H. was looking to improve his ACT sore and started at a 23. He increased his official ACT score 11 points all the way to a 34!!!. Gabbi G. increased her ACT score 10 points and went from a 22 all of the way to a 32! Both of these students are now applying to high level, competitive Universities. Hard work pays off. Jacob P. was a kindergarten student, who was struggling halfway through the school year. He increased his confidence and reading abilities exponentially and is now not only caught up, but ahead in 1st grade. This family learned that being proactive is key. Jacob’s brother attended Huntington a few years ago when he was struggling in 4th grade and has been “Most Outstanding Student” in middle school for 2 years in a row. “Huntington isn’t just a Band-Aid for the current issue; it’s a long term solution.” Gabbi G.
teaching practices. Some language arts teachers now use journal entries as a platform to showcase student interests. Other academic areas are using brain breaks and kinesthetic learning to help jump start student engagement. Moreover, it is evident that many of the other teachers are focusing on making connections within the classroom in an effort to increase participation. Student restrooms have been redesigned to include positive affirmations and uplifting images. Conscious Discipline at Silver Trail is not confined to the classroom. It has been statistically proven that if a school family is built on a healthy family model, it provides for optimal development for all students. As a school, we have adopted the “We Are Family” theme. To kick off our theme students were welcomed back with family friendly messages held by staff members all over campus. Instead of assemblies, we now have “family reunions”. During pre-planning week each teacher received potted seeds to maintain throughout the school year. The plant serves as a representation of STMS’ commitment to helping students and staff grow with our new vision. We have planted the seeds and are eagerly watching it grow on the trail! Silver Trail Middle is located at 18300 Sheridan Street. The main phone number is (754) 323-4300. Mr. Steven Frazier is the school’s principal.

Felicia G. struggled through Middle School due to a lack of reading comprehension and math skills as well as social anxiety. She took a break from traditional school and started homeschooling after a year in middle school. She worked with Huntington Learning Center for about 9 months on building up her skills, not only in math and reading, but in study skills and coping skills to become a more responsible and confident student. She is now back in a traditional school setting and thriving. We couldn’t be more proud of the confidence and overall growth that Felicia made with Huntington Learning Center. If your child is struggling with any subject let Huntington Learning Center help and maybe they can be the next Academic Superstar.

SCHOOLS and clubs this year Soccer, Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Flag Football and Cheerleading. Athletics enrich the lives of our student-athletes. Pines MS encourages participation in athletics because of the important life lessons that are learned when students are involved in it. Teamwork, self-discipline, time management, commitment, sportsmanship, perseverance and sacrifice are some of the lessons we aim to teach our students. Through participation in athletics, these life lessons will provide the students an opportunity to grow and mature as young adults. We want to prepare them for life after they leave Pines Middle. Pines MS goes by the saying “We never lose, either we win, or we learn.” Pines Middle is located at 200 NW Douglas Road. The main phone number is (754) 323-4000. grade team consisting of teachers, administration and support staff will be hosting weekly writing seminars to guide students through a hands-on and engaging writing experience. Teachers and staff are dressed in construction vests and students are equipped with their writing toolbox (file folder). All students have a writing toolbox full of writing resources, tools for writing and a checklist that they bring to each seminar. The writing seminars facilitate student collaboration and thought as students transform their writing from a work in progress to a published masterpiece. Topics of the seminar will focus on students relaying a purpose and having organization within their writing as well as audience engagement and providing elaboration and evidence on a given topic at both the paragraph and essay level. Throughout the whole group, small group and independent practice opportunities offered at each writing seminar,

ines Lakes Elementary (PLE) is a “B” rated school for the second year in a row! Community involvement and dedication from our parents, teachers, and all members of faculty truly help to make PLE the best place to be! Innovation. Dreaming. Making the world a better place. All of these things are the goals of engineers. One of the things that makes our PLE Panthers stand out is our PAWsome STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) program. In our fourth year, our STEM Innovation in Engineering program engages our students in project-based learning using hands-on engineering applications with an emphasis on literacy. Students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade visit our Fab Lab on a weekly basis. Under the direction of Mrs. Glenda Robinson, our STEM teacher, students learn the steps of the Engineering Design process. In our Fab Lab, students work with robotics programs, learn to code and utilize a 3D printer. Here students become engineers, inventors, problem-solvers, and explorers. Last year our students had the distinct honor of creating a 3D replica of our Superintendent, Mr. Runcie! Our teachers guide the opportunities for students to develop their engineering skills. In our classrooms, there are dedicated spaces where students become
students will prepare themselves for the rigor of responding to a text-based writing prompt on the Florida Standards Assessment. Along the way, students will construct and fill their writing toolbox, teeming with writing resources, tools for writing and a checklist to assess their own writing. The toolbox will travel with students to and from seminar and to and from school so that they will have this resource readily available for them to use whenever they are practicing and refining their writer’s craft. Not only are students learning the essential tools for writing, but this seminar gives them a chance to collaborate with other peers outside of their classroom, share their success and receive feedback from other adults. Students are just as excited about the workshop as the teachers and the parents. Panther Run Elementary is located at 801 NW 172nd Avenue. The main school number is (754) 323-6850. problem-solvers. These spaces, called Tinkerspaces in lower school or Engineering Workshops in upper school are a favorite of our students. Children are able to explore challenges and learn to collaborate with classmates as they explore the world around them through construction and de-construction of everyday objects. Teachers continually receive training on implementing STEM throughout the curriculum. Recently, two of our teachers Ms. Melanie Muroff and Mrs. Glenda Robinson, attended a school district event at iFly where they were able to collaborate with district leaders in the areas of STEM and Computer Science. We celebrate with our families at the end of each quarter with our Quarterly Family Nights. At these events, our families can view the engineering projects the students have created, as well as participate in break-out sessions such as robotics, coding, Through these means we are “Preparing the next generation to be problem solvers and innovative thinkers through STEM project based learning.” Pines Lakes Elementary is located at 10300 Johnson Street. SCHOOLS STEM In The Parks initiative. This is a collaboration between Broward County Schools, Broward County Parks, and STEM+CS Department of Applied Learning. We were able to participate in this wonderful experience with Dr. John Pipoly, the project/program coordinator. We also had Mrs. Kelli Whitney, naturalist, give the Green Knights Environmental Club a presentation. She told us about both the native and invasive plants you can find at C.B. Smith Park. Shortly afterward, we went on a field trip to C.B. Smith Park. We played a game entitled “I Spy through which we were able to slow down and explore the environment using all our senses. On top of that we learned more about invasive and native plants. This inspired
us to conduct an assembly. We had multiple students from the Green Knights Environmental Club present a short speech on invasive plants and their impact on the environment. We were very fortunate to have many people who work for Broward County attend our program. The STEM in The Parks program is a great experience. It allows middle school teachers and students to learn about the environment. Students collect data and learn about important concerns to the environment, which can inspire them to do further research and try to find a solution. This is exactly what happened for the Green Knights Environmental club, and I am proud to say that we have learned so much from this amazing program. Walter C. ccording to FeedingAmerica.org, 1 in 8 people are food insecure and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger translating to 74,730 children that go to bed hungry every night right here in South Florida. 25% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. This is why it is essential that community organizations such as Harvest Drive Florida get involved In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-six years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need through Harvest Drive. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee.
By Margot Lyons Puleri
Another distinctive characteristic of Harvest Drive is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County for Thanksgiving. Distribution sites will be set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.
Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.
SCHOOLS • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, throughout last year they made an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our local schools who are hungry. They also start each school year off by providing well stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies.

NEW BUILDING COMING TO FLANAGAN HIGH
lanagan High School is excited to share that our school campus will be expanding in the coming months. With the funds from the SMART bond, Flanagan High School was approved for a two-story building addition that will house 18 new classrooms and lab facilities for students and staff. The Flanagan staff has been in constant communication with the architect and construction company in planning for this new and exciting expansion of our campus. The new building will replace the existing portable classrooms on the east side of campus and is expected to be open for students and staff in the 2019-20 school year. We are very excited for the expansion of our campus! MOVE is an organization at Charles W. Flanagan High School that uplifts students and brings them together, both socially and academically. Our theme this year is “Understanding the Purpose of Setting Goals.” Students are taught how to mentor their peers and then assigned as a mentor to other students. This enables the mentors to serve as a vehicle to empower those students who struggle with social, behavioral, and academic skills. On September 4th, the MOVE students hosted their first event of the year:
A Cupcake Social. The social allowed the MOVE students to meet and greet with other members in the group. The keynote speaker, Mr. Stephen Brooks, spoke on the theme of “Setting Goals”. The Cupcake Social ended with refreshments and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Our 8th grade acceleration program, Young Falcon Flyers, is off to a great start. This is our third year offering the program and we have over 100 8th grade students from Walter C. Young Middle School are taking additional high classes on Flanagan’s campus prior to starting their middle school day. 8th graders have the option to take Band, NJROTC, Color Guard, French I, Making Math Come Alive, Debate, World Geography Pre-AP, and Literature in Media. This program enables these students to become familiar with the not only the rigor of high school classes, but it also allows them to get to know the campus so the transition to high school is easier. In addition, the 8th graders can earn up to two high school credits prior to starting their freshmen year. Flanagan High is located at 12800 Taft Street. Mrs. Michelle Kefford is the school’s principal.
