Dear Readers, With thoughts about the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Jose, and then the most deadly mass shooting ever in Las Vegas, my intent is to find and share with you the positive that we should hold onto when it all seems just too much. This is not an easy task when thinking about all of those families that lost loved ones, homes and a lifetime of amassed belongings. However, at some point in the chaos, destruction, death and despair, “good” always surfaces...ALWAYS! After the storms, neighbors began to actually talk to AND help their neighbors. People gave what they could to those who couldn’t get what they needed. People took others into their homes who had lost their own homes or had no power. So many companies and out of state people travelled days to come to our aid with generators and supplies. People sacrificed their lives to help others live. Our first responders were and are always our heroes, but so many ordinary people became heroes, too, even if they never knew where their donations ended up or who’s life they saved because they chose to do “good”. With the holidays upon us, let’s just take a minute and say thank you for what we have in our country, the United States of America, with our people that give so much. Let’s appreciate our health, our loved ones, our environment, our belongings and our neighbors. There is so much good in our lives even when the worst happens. Without adversity, we become complacent with our appreciation. The lessons our children take from us when bad things happen is how

“Being a GOOD person doesn’t depend on your religion, race, status, color, political views or culture. It depends on how you treat others.”

we can positively impact their future. Did we complain or take action? Did we reach out to those in need or just worry about ourselves? Did we do “good”? Did we involve our children in doing “good”? With that said, if you are able to volunteer, donate supplies or give monetarily, please involve your whole family and make it a point to help others in need this season. Harvest Drive is celebrating 25 years of doing “good” in our community by gathering and giving entire Thanksgiving meals, clothes and toys to hungry and needy families in Broward County. There are drop off sites at almost every school or they can send volunteers to pick up from your home if you cannot get to a site. They also need hands-on help now and all year long! Please read our Harvest Drive article in this issue to help the mission of doing good, call Renee Herman at (954) 444-5548 or visit their website at www.harvestdriveflorida.com. Wishing all of you a “good” holiday season and New Year, make it count! My best to you,

Margot Puleri

n the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-five years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Clubs have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Alan Strauss, Michael Ramirez, Valerie Wanza, Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have gone above and beyond to help our mission,” said Renee. Another distinctive characteristic of the program is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

“What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based

on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Renee does not comprehend the word “no” when it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.”

AROUND TOWN

Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, last year they made over 600 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our schools who are hungry. This year they are on track to surpass 1,200 boxes. Renee and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Publix Charities, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

By: Wayne Stofsky - Owner/Director, Broward Baseball Academy and Athletic Director, David Posnack School

H

igh School showcase teams have taken over the baseball landscape for players 14-18 years old, especially for student-athletes who want to play at the collegiate level. Locally, the Broward Baseball Academy (BBA), under the direction of Wayne Stofsky, has been very successful on the field and placing players in various schools across the country. In the last three years, 17 players who have played on BBA teams have signed or verbally committed to play college baseball at places like George Washington University, Dartmouth, Emory, Florida International University, Lehigh, Johns Hopkins and Fordham. “In today’s athletic landscape, the recruiting process is a full-time job that should include your coach, a college advisor and the family. I believe there is a place for almost everyone who wants to play in college as long as they have the desire, the commitment, the talent, the grades and they are ‘realistic’ about what level they can compete,” Stofsky says. This past summer, BBA fielded a 15u, two 16u’s and a 17u team that competed in 25 tournaments over the course of 8 weeks. These events, put on by Perfect Game, Prospect Wire, Prospect Select and by local colleges run anywhere from 3 to 7 days and each team gets between 4 and 9 games depending on how deep into the tournament you go. The players get great exposure and get to compete against the best talent from around the country. BBA’s philosophy is to develop players, teach them how to carry themselves like professionals and to have fun. “Our program is very family friendly. We travel together, stay in the same hotels, have cookouts,

socialize and make friends for life,“ says Stofsky. Student-athletes who make up BBA rosters come from about a dozen South Florida High schools including Cooper City, St. Thomas Aquinas, Nova, Taravella, University School, Cypress Bay and Archbishop McArthy. “I have a really good relationship with the high school coaches and they trust me to develop and protect their players in addition to helping them get to the next level,” said Stofsky. BBA does not do anything during the high school spring season. This is the time all players should be focused and committed to their high school teams. BBA team tryouts take place in December, prior to the start of the high school season and the first practices do not take place until May, when all schools have finished. For more information about the Broward Baseball Academy or showcase team tryouts email Wayne@BrowardBaseballAcademy.com.

A

fundamental purpose of life insurance is to replace an individual’s economic value should they die earlier than anticipated. Considering that the ability to earn an income is one’s greatest financial asset, it is logical to select an amount of life insurance that reflects this lifetime earning potential. Yet this logic is sometimes skewed by a misguided emphasis on reducing costs. Instead of fully insuring one’s economic value, some consumers and financial professionals focus on determining the minimum amount of life insurance needed for the economic survival of beneficiaries. A simple illustration highlights both the ethical and practical shortcomings of obtaining the least amount of life insurance.

The Example

A 35-year-old husband is killed by an intoxicated motorist. The event is devastating to his family, both emotionally and financially. Beyond any criminal prosecution, the family of the deceased will almost certainly pursue a civil action to secure a financial judgment against the drunk driver. In court, representatives for the family will establish the lifetime economic value of the deceased. This will be an assumption of future lifetime earnings, reflecting the victim’s vocation, anticipated raises, professional advancement, remaining working years, the impact of inflation, etc. Projected future earnings will then be reconfigured as a present-value amount, i.e., a lump sum needed today to replicate this projected stream of income. This present-value number would be the baseline for determining financial compensation due to surviving family members.

The logic and justice of seeking financial compensation equal to the lifetime economic value of the victim should be easy to comprehend. Two follow-up questions, and their answers, should make it apparent that this rationale applies to other circumstances. Question 1: Is there any reason the family should consider asking for an amount less than the husband’s full lifetime economic value? For example, if the family already had enough assets to survive, and didn’t “need” a judgment for the full economic value of the deceased, would it be advisable to seek a lower amount, or perhaps nothing at all? Question 2: If this death occurred in a one-car accident, where the husband lost control of his vehicle due to weather conditions, would the lifetime economic loss be any less than if another party was responsible? The correct answers, and their implications, should be obvious. Regardless of the level of financial well-being of the survivors, they deserve to be fully compensated. There is no moral justification for seeking a lower settlement amount by arguing the survivors “don’t need it.” And the magnitude of the economic damage does not change if there is no one to blame for the husband’s death; a drunk driver, a one-car accident or a sudden illness all cause the same financial loss.

lantation Park Elementary “Gives a Hoot for a Cure!” Each year the school participates in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event held each spring in the city of Plantation. During the school year, the teachers and staff hold different fundraisers to help raise money for their team goal. The first event was held in October when the entire student body and staff were asked to wear pink and pledge at least one dollar to help fight cancer. This year they raised $780 from their 570 students! Nicole Fimiano, an ESE Specialist at Plantation Park Elementary, is the team captain for her school and has been involved in Relay for Life for several years. The school wants to teach the students how important it is to get involved at a young age and have them think beyond themselves. Almost everyone has been in one way or another touched by cancer.

56

“It really is so important that we let kids know that cancer is just not for one person,” Principal Julie Gittelman says. “It can happen to anyone, or any one family member, so you just teach the kids so they’re aware, to be sensitive, to care for others, not just themselves. Our school has been personally affected by cancer, it’s always effortless to get people to help. We seem to always exceed our team goal,” she added. Plantation Park Elementary is a school where the students, parents, staff, and the community work together because they “give a HOOT” about children!” If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school (754) 323-7150. HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER 4 Ways to Improve Study Time

I

t takes effort and persistence to be a good student, and the hardest part for many is learning and consistently embracing good study habits. The investment is worth it, however. Students who learn the tools to study smart as younger students will be well equipped to handle the increased workload for multiple classes in high school. To be most effective, study time should be efficient, focused and organized. If your child’s study sessions could be better, here are four tips to help: Study with a plan. Studying without a plan can easily lead to procrastination and wasted time. Your child should get into the habit of planning out what to study and for how long every single day. A planner will come in very useful here—have your child use it to record daily homework assignments, upcoming test and project dates, and other obligations (such as extracurricular activities). At the start of homework time each day, your child should review assignments due the next day and look ahead at the rest of the week for any upcoming project deadlines, quizzes or exams. Your child can then prioritize all tasks and dive in. Get “in the zone.” Studying when the heart is only halfway in it isn’t as effective as studying when focused and ready to work. You can help your child by talking about when he or she feels the most alert and motivated and planning to study at that time whenever possible. Without question, there will be times when your child just isn’t feeling it. The key is to get into the studying mindset prior to starting on a pre-defined list of priorities and minimize any distractions. A concentrated 30-minute study session is much better than one hour of partly distracted, unenthusiastic work.

Stop to self-check often. It’s a fact that regular summarizing and self-testing is one of the best ways to help solidify knowledge. Encourage your child to preview the text before reading, jot down main points while reading, and stop every few pages to summarize. If it’s a problem-solving subject like math, have him or her do any practice problems or self-check quizzes in the text or workbook along the way, too. Aim for consistency. Regular studying of a topic helps it “stick” making those exam study sessions much easier and less stressful. It’s always a good idea for middle and high school students to spend time each evening reviewing any class notes, even if just for a few minutes. A student who spends 20 minutes each day on homework AND reading and reviewing concepts covered in class will be far better prepared than the one who does homework only, but pulls an all-nighter study session the night before a test. When it comes to learning, the way your child studies is equally (if not more) as important as how often he or she studies. If your child seems to struggle with getting started or you notice that his or her time or effort is not translating into positive results, call Huntington. We’ll work with your child to develop good habits that ensure study time always results in learning. Learn more at www.HuntingtonHelps.com.

W

e live in a cul-de-sac in Weston, surrounded by young families. The circular swale in front of our house is a racetrack for young kids and their trikes, bicycles, skateboards, battery powered mini motorcycles, and pretty much anything on wheels. Throw in a few dogs chasing around the kids and you have a pretty good snapshot of our neighborhood any weekday afternoon after school. On July 4th every year, we close off the street, wheel our barbecue grills and smokers to the front of our homes, set up picnic tables and join our neighbors around the island swale. We share food and drinks and the stories of our lives, rather than just waving to each other from our cars. The kids throw water balloons and squirt each other and a lot of adults with their toys. When the sun goes down, the fireworks come out and we end a great day having celebrated “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as the Declaration of Independence instructs. The families in our neighborhood came from around the world to celebrate a document that proclaims, “All men are created equal.” We are from Peru and California, Mexico and New York, Sri Lanka and Chicago, Colombia and Venezuela and yes, we even have Florida natives. We are from big cities and small towns. We are from different places, but what unites us is our children. Our children are born value-free and unbiased. Bias is learned behavior. Can we raise our children free of prejudice by simply refusing to transmit negative attitudes? Unfortunately, no, our society is not value-free and its negative messages are too pervasive. It’s important for children to grow up confident of their own identity, respectful of

other people, and aware of the rich diversity of their community and world. Teaching tolerance is important because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Tolerance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice. Tolerance does not mean that all behaviors have to be accepted. Behaviors that disrespect or hurt others, like bullying, or behaviors that break social rules, like lying or stealing, should not be tolerated. Tolerance is about accepting people for who they are, not about accepting bad behavior. Like all attitudes, tolerance is often taught in subtle ways. Even before they can speak, children closely watch — and imitate — their parents. There’s a country song that says, “Dad I’ve been watching you”. This song is powerful. Our children carefully observe our behavior and imitate it, good and bad. Celebrating differences of others doesn’t mean abandoning your own heritage. Your family’s cultural and religious traditions are something to be proud of. Families can find ways to celebrate differences of others while continuing to honor and pass down their own cultural heritage. When parents encourage tolerance in their children, talk about their values, and model the behavior they would like to see by treating others well, kids will follow in their footsteps.

Preparing for Pathways S

outh Plantation began the year with a new program for students. The Pathways of Innovation is a team of 100 students who are submerged into project based learning. The students range from 9th-12th grade and work with a core team of educators by proposing project ideas to answer driving questions. The students incorporate all subject areas into their projects and present their work to the team. This program along with our Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program, and a plethora of other in-depth studies, helps reach the learning styles of every individual student. The seniors and juniors have been attending college presentations. College recruiters meet with students to review the online application process and to go over the acceptance requirements. The students have been preparing for the college process, ever since they began taking high school credit courses, even in middle school. Having a great GPA and then preparing for the SAT or ACT test will ensure that a student will be accepted to college. Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year Mr. Bob Rose. He teaches US History and Law Studies. We are fortunate to have Mr. Rose on our campus. He is also the Girls’ Lacrosse Coach. He came to South Plantation in 2006.

The SPHS Employee of the Year is Mrs. Ann Suarez, began in 2015. As our Guidance Secretary Mrs. Suarez books the appointments and helps with registrations, and always does so with a smile. hat an eventful year this has been so far. We were all so fortunate to have minor damage in the school and community after Hurricane Irma and we welcomed our students back to Central Park Elementary. Our custodial staff went above and beyond to ensure our walkways, buildings and classrooms were safe, clean and in working order for our student’s return. Moving forward, we are working hard to make up those precious days of learning we missed. In September, we also celebrated Peace Week, decorating our walkways with words and symbols that reflected unity, peace, kindness, and love. Our message is simple; an act of kindness doesn’t cost anything and yet it is priceless. Our students participated in the City of Plantation’s Martie Terziu Fire Prevention Art & Literature Contest. We are excited to announce we had 5 citywide winners this year! Congratulations to: • 1st place – Hand Drawn – Raj R. • 2nd place - Hand Drawn – Elleen E. • 1st place - Literature – Brody R. • 2nd place - Literature – Angeline A. • 1st place - Video – Eduardo B. As the holiday season draws near, we are preparing for our annual Harvest Drive, where our fifth grade students collaborate with our fabulous Guidance

We welcome anyone in the community who would like to make a donation between October 23rdNovember 3rd to drop it off in our front office. Our book fair will be in “full swing” November 1st-8th, with the family night taking place November 2nd. During the month of December we collect unwrapped toys and gifts for our own families in need. For the past two years, the generosity of our parents and community has been overwhelming and we have been able to share these donations with a sister school. On January 20th, we will be celebrating our 3rd Annual Community Fair and Garage Sale at the school. Every year, this event grows as we come together to share a day of fun, crafts, selling, and shopping for treasures. Our amazing PTA will have more information on their website in late November at centralparkpta.my-pta.org. We wish everyone a safe, joyous Holiday Season. May your homes and hearts be filled with an abundance of peace and love. Central Park Elementary is located at 777 N. Nob Hill Road, Plantation 33324. PLANTATION HIGH SCHOOL Pathway University Program P

lantation High’s new Pathway University Program, or Pathway UP, provides an innovative approach to scheduling students into career technical education classes; offering students post-secondary options direct to career, vocational program enrollment, technical college, or university matriculation. Pathway UP was created by teachers to provide multiple career options for all students on campus. Pathway UP is designed in the manner of a university enrollment model. Students choose their career path and enroll in a Technology applications class and a class in their chosen major in their first year. The second and third years of Pathway UP feature a major class and a crosscurricular applications class for extra industry certifications, college dual enrollment, or AP credits. Capstone projects, internships, or on the job training would complete the career pathway in the fourth year. Examples of current fourth year pathways include students working with

the district in local construction, HVAC, and electrical internships, students working with NASA to launch scientific payload carrying rockets, and students working across the business, CAD, and engineering classes to market, design, and manufacture PHS branded spirit items. The alignment of the classes with industry certification exams provides students access to the new Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholarship. This scholarship pays for tuition up to 120 credit hours of post-secondary education for graduates who earn 5 credit hours through industry certification CAPE classes. Plantation High has Pathway UP CAPE certified classes in Horticultural Science, Healthcare, Culinary Arts, Finance, Construction Technologies, Business Applications, Computer Aided Drafting, and Engineering. For a tour of our Pathway UP Career Technology classes, contact Joseph Chiaramonte, the magnet coordinator, at Joseph.Chiaramonte@ browardschools.com.

SCHOOLS event titled “Girl Powered” to encourage and motivate girls to involve themselves in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Invited guest speakers were all women engineers from companies such as FPL, Broward School District, Jacobs Engineering and Ultimate Software. From many different backgrounds, these women all spoke about their paths and passions that brought them into the field of engineering. The Mirror Lake student body audience was fascinated by what engineers actually did such as; build bridges and highways, planes and automobiles, design computer software programs, and manage and inspect electric grids for schools, buildings and cities. The resounding theme that all the speakers had in common was that it was hard work to get to their positions, they were the minorities as women in the classrooms and in their field, and they absolutely loved being engineers (civil, mechanical, electrical and computer software). Following the assembly of speakers, the guest engineers were invited to the Media Center to work with the girls robotics team for hands-on robotics engineering demonstrations. They worked as teams to build, code and enjoy the process

of seeing robotics come to life due to their efforts. The “Girl Powered” event was hosted on the heels of receiving two grants. The first was The Girls Empowerment for Engineers Grant awarded by the Rec Foundation which allowed 17 female students to form their own robotics team at Mirror Lake. Currently only 24% of engineers are females and the goal of the empowerment grant is to increase this number to 50% by the year 2020. The second was the VEX IQ Challenge Grant. Mirror Lake was one of 56 Broward elementary schools to receive this grant enabling them to form a Robotics Ultron 1841 Club of 50 members ranging from grades 2-5. They will compete alongside Mirror Lake’s other robotics team at the county wide district competition being held on January 13th, 2018. “Our students will compete against the other elementary schools in a variety of challenges. We are very excited about this new opportunity for our students to learn while having fun,” said Principal Marlen Veliz. Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313.
