lorida Singing Sons was privileged to take a cultural tour of Spain June 19–28, 2016. Forty-five choristers (ages 13–18), artistic staff, chaperones, and patrons participated in this amazing international tour. Florida Singing Sons choristers performed great choral works at the famous Montserrat Monastery outside of Barcelona, the Basilica Santa Maria del Pi, Barcelona, the Basilica del Pilar, Zaragoza. We also sang a joint concert with ARS VIVA Children’s Choir, one of the most prestigious children’s choirs in Spain, and at the Iglesia Nuestra Senora de Begona, Bilbao. Our last performance experience was at the Bascilica Pontificia de San Miguel, Madrid. Each venue was a perfect aesthetic and acoustical setting for our voices. Concerts were filled to capacity with enthusiastic audiences. Impromptu singing spontaneously occurred at restaurants, La Sagrada Familia, along the Barcelona beach boardwalk, and at receptions held in our honor. We even saved our last song to sing for family and friends upon our arrival back to the Fort Lauderdale airport. Local guides provided an interesting walking and/or bus tour of each city that

oral Springs—Commissioners, hospital administrators, city officials and staff recently gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the hospital expansion project at Broward Health Coral Springs (BHCS). Expecting to be completed in 2018, the 110,000-square-foot expansion includes four floors of healthcare services that will meet the needs of patients and their families. The ceremony included a showing of an artist’s rendering of the new project that will include the following: • On the first floor, we will offer labor and delivery, as well as C-section rooms for expectant mothers • On the second floor will be 28 private mother/baby post-partum rooms and a new 10-bed NICU • On the third floor will be 28 private medical/surgery beds • And on the fourth floor will be shell space for future clinical services “This is an exciting time in the history of BHCS and an important step in serving this rapidly growing community,” said Drew Grossman, CEO of BHCS. “The groundbreaking

we visited. Choristers toured Bilbao’s amazing Guggenheim museum where, in groups of three, they selected their favorite work of modern art and later made presentations to the entire touring group. Clearly this year’s tour was an exciting and enriching experience for each chorister and the accompanying adults. This amazing trip created lifelong memories for all on the tour. If you have a son or know a boy who is interested in music and singing, stop by the Singing Sons Office during our Open Auditions! Families are welcome to attend – parents can meet staff and ask questions, students can interact with current choir members, and there will be a brief voice-check to see if your son is the right fit for FSS. See you soon! Upcoming Audition Dates: Sunday, 9/11 12:00pm – 3:00pm Sunday, 9/18 12:00pm – 3:00pm. *Alternative Audition Appointments Available – Call (954) 563.2697. ceremony was truly a celebration of the hard work that our Care Warriors do here at BHCS every day. We are very proud of this project and we are honored to provide the very best in healthcare to patients and families in our community for generations to come.” This expansion project is aimed at providing greater access to quality, patient-centered care to residents in western Broward County and it’s much needed due to the growing need for patients and their families to have access to the highest quality of healthcare close to home. And it’s another example of how we at Broward Health continue to invest in our facilities and services in order to meet the increasing needs of the populations we serve. Broward Health, providing service for more than 75 years, is a nationally recognized system in South Florida that offers world-class healthcare to all. Dear Readers,

Welcome to a New School Year! Hopefully everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer of fun filled days with exciting activities and adventurous vacations. It is now time to shift our focus to education again. We have compiled an updated list of all current school information and FSA scores from the 2015 – 2016 school year, as well as newly released school grades and the Broward County Schools calendar. If you have not already, now is the time to sign your children up for fall sports and activities that both of our amazing cities have to offer. Please encourage your children to go through the magazine and pick out extracurricular activities that may be of interest to them. Try to find a good balance between studying, extracurricular activities and sports. This can help teach your child about managing their time and setting goals; it will also help them develop a good work ethic and leadership skills that will serve them well in the future. With the season upon us, our events calendar is jam packed. From “Eats and Beats” at Pine Trails Park Amphitheater and the September 11th Remembrance 5K to the annual Video Game Challenge, there is always something for everyone to enjoy! We are especially proud to share the details about the Uni-Teens program presented in the fall. On Thursday, October 20th, each middle school in Coral Springs will be asked to send 20 students to the Coral Springs Gymnasium so they can attend a diversity training program that will be run by professional facilitators. The students will act as ambassadors and will be asked to take the information they learn and present it to their classmates. The goal of the program is to spread awareness about tolerance and the vast diversity present within our community. Make sure you check out our timely article on the upcoming elections and how children can take part in the political process. Don’t miss the Parkland Candidate Forum hosted by the Parkland Chamber of Commerce on October 6th. All candidates will be answering questions submitted by you, the residents. If you would like to submit a question, please visit www.parklandchamber.org. Finally, we want to offer special congratulations to our local baseball teams. The Stoneman Douglas High School baseball team became state champions winning the Florida 9A State Baseball Championship with a record of 27–2. As for our youngsters, North Springs Little League 9–10 All-Stars made it all the way to the State of the Champions Tournament. Our Parkland Little league team has made it all the way to the Intermediate 50/70 Little league World Series, and as of our print date, has yet to lose! In closing, I would like to wish all of our parents, educators and children a successful and enjoyable school year. As always, please feel free to submit any pictures or updates so that we can share them with the rest of our readers. Until next time,

Kim Kadel

Having a Job Changes a Young Man’s Life When Shawn Burrows heads to work each day, he does it

without complaint – in fact, a smile stretches across his face as he enters Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida. For Shawn, who has had three open-heart surgeries due to a pulmonary valve disorder, having a job has changed his life. His condition must be monitored and requires multiple medications, but that doesn’t stop him from excelling as a materials management technician at Wuesthoff. Shawn got the job with the help of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), a federal-state agency that helps people with disabilities prepare for, get, or keep jobs. He came to VR as a senior in high school, unsure of what he wanted to do after graduation. VR Counselor Lynda Schuchert met with him and went over his options. Shawn decided to volunteer at Wuesthoff Hospital and was assigned to work in the materials management department. “It’s like a store,” Shawn says. “Hospital workers send us requests for items and then we fill the orders. We also stock the shelves and keep the store clean.” Shawn quickly found that he liked the work. His supervisor noticed his exceptional performance and offered him a part-time position. After a month working part-time, Shawn’s hours have increased to 35 hours a week. He now makes enough money

to cover the cost of his own health insurance and rent for his own apartment. Shawn has surprised himself and his parents with how well he is doing in his new job. He is grateful for his job and for those who have helped him along the way. “I had to go through all of these steps to try and get a job, and VR helped me with every single one,” he says. In the future, Shawn plans to go to college to become a doctor or nurse. The same young man who didn’t know if he could work at all because of his disability is now making plans for a future that includes a career in his now chosen field. VR helped Shawn find his perfect job and we can help you too. Our counselors work with students to prepare them to get and keep a job after graduation. Your counselor will work with you to see what career would be best for you. You can try a variety of work experiences in your community, or you could attend pre-employment skills training where you’ll learn what is involved in having a job. You’ll also learn how to advocate for yourself and achieve independence through employment. For more information, contact the Coral Springs VR office at (954) 346-2828 or visit our website at www.rehabworks.org.

think it is fair to say that one of the most attractive qualities of the Kids of Love Foundation is its simplistic and truly heartwarming origin. The beginning of this foundation can be traced back to the year 2007 when the founder, Randall Slapikas, was just eight years old. It was so shocking and inspiring for me to learn that at such a young age, Randall’s initial desire to start making positive changes for children with cancer was driven not by personal experience with the disease, but by simply meeting children close to his age who had cancer. Randall explained to me that his thoughts after meeting these children centered on their day-to-day lives. He understood that their lives were not like those of healthy children and in turn he desired to try and give them as much of a normal childhood as he could, from within the hospital walls. I think that for an eight year old to want so badly to help kids who are struggling with this debilitating disease is a truly inspiring thing that should occur more often in this world. The Kids of Love Foundation, in its most humble beginnings, started off as a school club at James Hunt Elementary when Randall Slapikas was in the third grade. We can now fast-forward four years to January 12, 2011 when the Kids of Love Foundation became a 501Š3 charity. Acquiring this status meant that the foundation could start doing some serious work for the benefit of cancer children in their community. The Kids of Love Foundation takes pride in all of the events they are able to do for the benefit of child cancer patients in the community. All of their events are worked by volunteers; they do not have a staff of paid workers for each event. They know the importance of service in the community, so any middle or high school student that volunteers at an event will receive service hours. The upcoming events for this fall include the Back to School Bash at Sawgrass Lanes on August 28th, the Labor Day Bowl-a-thon for childhood cancer awareness, and a head-shaving event

on September 24th. All of the funds raised at their events go directly to the children with cancer and their families and to organizations like the American Cancer Society and St. Baldrick’s to benefit cancer research efforts. It is imperative to know that the Kids of Love Foundation does not only deal with childhood cancer, but they also help support and raise money for children that are afflicted with other rare diseases. Randall Slapikas and his parents are very special and extremely generous people that know the truth of what it means to serve others. For more information on how you can get involved with this wonderful charity, please visit www.kidsoflove.org.

ince 2001, American Top Team of Coconut Creek has been training athletes in the community as well as elite MMA fighters from around the globe. Home to UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler, Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes, World Champions and Olympians, American Top Team is considered one of the best teams in the world. With the opening of their new 40,000 sqft training facility in January 2016, American Top Team now has the gold standard in training accommodations as well. Yet, American Top Team is more than just a professional athlete training center. For over 15 years American Top Team has offered the opportunity for children, teens and adults to learn martial arts, kickboxing and wrestling from some of the most respected instructors in their disciplines. American Top Team offers a variety of programs for youth and teens. Children as young as three can take part in the Little Champs program. This program focuses on developing proper foundations- body strength, flexibility, balance, focus and confidence- skills that are necessary for all athletic endeavors. The certified instructors teach a structured and fun class that keep the students engaged for the full 50 minutes. For school aged and teen athletes, American Top Team offers training in three disciplines- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and kickboxing, as well as an Afterschool program that picks students up from local elementary schools. Both the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling programs compete in area and regional tournaments, which give students a chance to display their skills and team camaraderie. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are taught by a staff of world champion black belts. The focus of the Future Champs program is the development of sound technique, strategy and discipline under the watchful guidance of the elite coaching staff.

American Top Team is dedicated to quality instruction with at least three advanced level instructors on the mat for each class. The American Top Team wrestling program is coached by US Olympian Steve Mocco. Wrestling is a base sport, which means it helps performance in all other sports, because training incorporates agility, strength and flexibility. Coach Mocco and staff are committed to teaching proper, effective wrestling techniques while helping each athlete develop focus, discipline and a great work ethic. The American Top Team wrestling program is appropriate for beginning and advanced athletes, ages 5-18. Kickboxing classes are taught by UFC veteran Steve Bruno. Students begin by learning the basics of throwing a safe and effective punch and then advance into footwork, combinations, leg attacks and much more! Coach Bruno emphasizes proper technique and discipline, while building confidence and work ethic in his students. The youth and teen Kickboxing classes are open to ages 7 and up. American Top Team offers a number of martial arts and fitness programs for adults. Martial Arts programs include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing, Grappling and Muay Thai. For the fitness enthusiast, American Top Team has ATT Fitness, an interval training workout that incorporates bodyweight and weighted exercises, and is home to the indoor cycling studio, AbsoluteCycle. AbsoluteCycle is a brand-new, 42 bike studio with online reservations, data tracking and babysitting available. Come in to American Top Team, conveniently located on 441 at the Sawgrass Expressway, for a tour of the beautiful facility and to find out more about the programs.

The various competition categories that students participate in are meant to create realistic business scenarios and problems to test the student’s skills and academic attributes to further prepare them to be successful business leaders in the future. Thousands of DECA’s members participated to take on national titles in the final round of competition. This year, Marjory Stoneman Douglas DECA had 32 members attend the conference and they experienced impressive achievements. the top twenty out of all the competitors around the world. Christopher Rilling competed in the category of Financial Consulting, and he not only achieved a rank in the top twenty, but he later advanced to be a finalist in the top ten within the nation. Pinaki Upadhyay also advanced further into her category, remarkably becoming one of the top ten finalists. We are so proud of their accomplishments and the hard work that every one of our competitors put in to achieve success and gain important networking and life skills. This chapter would like to dedicate their success and achievements to their three chapter advisors, Sharon Cutler, Lisa Webster, and Mitchell Albert. Marjory Stoneman Douglas DECA is the largest club at MSD and was just announced as the sixth largest chapter in the world with over 600 members. According to its founder and president, Jeb Niewood, its mission is to develop and grow programs which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends; and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. Having started a music program in partnership with the School of Rock Coral Springs and a fitness program in partnership with All 4 One Fitness of Coral Springs, TFI was looking for a partner to launch an art program. That’s when Helene Foster, TFI’s Director of Public Relations and Marketing, found Art Paper Scissors and its creative and compassionate owner, Alison Koss. After one meeting, the Art Works program was created! Compassion is hereditary in the Koss family. Alison’s beautiful middle school daughter, Morgan, became a TFI student volunteer “Friend” for Art Works. Morgan says, “Being a part of the Friendship Initiative has been an amazing experience. Going into it, I thought we would be randomly partnered with kids. I never expected that a little boy, whose name is Javon, would pick me out of the crowd. I have such an amazing time being with Javon. It didn’t even feel like I was volunteering. It felt like I was doing arts and crafts with a friend, and that’s how I think of Javon, as my little friend. According to Stoneman Douglas High School senior, Varsha Geer, “When I started volunteering for The Friendship Initiative almost three years ago, I was looking for community service hours. I never imagined that I would meet so many incredible people who make a difference in the lives of others. What started as a way to earn community service hours has turned into so much more for me. I wanted to be one of those people who made a difference in the lives of others. When I heard that Art Works would be a new program under The Friendship Initiative, in partnership with Art Paper Scissors, I was ecstatic. I’ve played instruments and been a student fitness trainer for kids and young adults with special needs through the other programs of The Friendship Initiative. Now I was given the opportunity to participate in yet another incredible program. My “Friend” at Art Works is Mia, one of the most outgoing girls that I have ever met. Mia’s creative and unique expression through the Art Works program amazes me every time I am with her. The best part about this program is being able to see kids with smiles on their faces as they do something they love, an opportunity that nobody should miss!” Michaelle Prevalus, mother of seven-year-old Javon who has autism, has seen the difference that The Friendship Initiative’s programs have made in Javon’s life.

“I would like to thank Jeb Niewood from the bottom of my heart for creating The Friendship Initiative.” Most recently, thanks to TFI’s partnership with Art Paper Scissors and its talented and caring owner, Alison Koss, Javon loves creating art at the new Art Works program. Michaelle says, “Every time he is there, I can see the fun he is having, which always puts a smile on my face. Art Works is helping my son learn how to be more social with people and it also helps him with his fine motor skills. At Art Works my son’s volunteer “Friend” is Alison’s daughter, Morgan Koss. She is so sweet and patient with Javon and he really engages with her. If Javon becomes upset, Morgan just has a way to make him happy again. When I see this, it brings joy and happiness to my heart. Morgan, I thank you for all of your help with my son.” Kelli Yselonia, a Park Trails Elementary School teacher and mom to 16-year-old Justin says, “I love that The Friendship Initiative allows my son to explore and try new programs he would not otherwise have the ability to do on his own. Art Works with Art Paper Scissors and its owner, Alison Koss, is one of the TFI programs. The friend system where student volunteers match up with participants gives kids like Justin the opportunity and support they need to be successful.” Justin says “I don’t always do well with changes, so I like that my Friend, Michael, was with me for the Fit Friends fitness program and Art Works. Michael is a really nice guy and is very patient. I hope to have him as my Friend for many more sessions.” The next session of Art Works starts on Sunday, August 28th. Families of kids with special needs and student volunteers can register for Art Works at The Friendship Initiative web page: www.thefriendshipinitiative.org.

ATTENTION: All Public School students, including charter school students, will have the opportunity to vote on certain races on the August 30 Primary Ballot through www.kidsvotingbroward.org or Virtual Counselor on www.browardschools. com using their student ID. (Private schools should contact Carol Smith at cssmith@att.net for a ballot.) ATTENTION: Parents, there are issues for every registered voter on the August Primary Ballot. Do you want to be sure that Judges are fair and impartial? Are you concerned about the schools your children attend and the teachers they have? Are you interested in renewable energy? There are 31 attorneys vying for judgeships on County and Circuit Court. Three positions are open on the Broward School Board. And there is one Amendment to the Florida Constitution dealing with the exemption from assessment and taxation of Solar and Renewable Energy Devices.

Florida has a unique procedure for those partisan races where there is no other opposition in the November Election—all voters decide who will win, not just the political party voters. That will happen for 5 partisan races this August: US Congress District 24, Broward State Attorney, FL State Senate District 29 and FL State Representative Districts 92 and 95. The first thing to remember is to check your voting status on the new Voter Information Cards you received recently because district lines and numbers have changed for US Congress and FL Senate. Make sure your address and party affiliation is correct. In addition to the above issues, there are partisan races for United States Senate, Congress, Florida House and Senate, County Commission, Sheriff, Clerk of the Court and Supervisor of Elections. There are 3 ways to vote: 1. Early Voting at one of 20 sites around Broward County from August 20 through August 28, polls open 10am to 7pm; 2. Request a Vote by Mail ballot at www.browardsoe.org or (954) 357-7055; or 3. On Election Day, August 30, at your assigned precinct, polls open 7am to 7pm. The major source of local information is VOTE411.org. It is a one-stop shop for election news. Know the issues, know the candidates.

ating a nourishing meal is something that many of us take for granted. Did you know that in South Florida, nearly one million people struggle with hunger, one in four children go to bed hungry and one in seven seniors face the choice between paying rent, buying medication or eating a healthy meal? A critical component of a high-quality life is good health, which starts with eating right. Unfortunately, lack of access to healthy and fresh foods is a very real problem that exists right here in our own backyard. Lack of food can lead to serious problems. In children, it can lead to behavioral issues and decreased performance in school, as well as immediate and long-term health complications including diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. For seniors, lack of food and poor nutrition can lead to memory loss and increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and kidney failure. In addition, seniors living on a fixed income are often forced to make the choice between vital medications and groceries. For the fourth year in a row, Sage Dental is teaming up with Feeding South Florida to help make a difference in the lives of those who struggle to put food on the table. Having collected a combined total of almost a ton of food in past year’s food drives, Sage Dental is now on a mission to collect even more food this year for South Floridians in

need. From October 24th through December 8th, Sage Dental will be collecting non-perishable food items at all of its 35 South Florida dental offices. All of the food collected will be donated to Feeding South Florida for distribution within South Florida communities to families and individuals in need, food pantries, youth programs, senior centers and direct service programs. “We are thrilled to be giving back to our local communities. We already make people smile by helping them with improved overall oral health and it is further rewarding to help put smiles on faces of families because we are providing food to live,” explains Rebecca Longo, Vice President of Marketing. Together with Feeding South Florida and sponsors WSVN-TV (FOX 7), WPBF-TV (ABC 25), Alpha Media (WRMF-FM 97.9, WMBX-FM 102.3, WIRK-FM 103.1, WEAT 107.9, BEATZ 96.3, WFTL 850, WMEN 640), Sports & Activities Directories, COX Radio Miami (WFEZ Easy 93.1, WFLC HITS 97.3), Treasure Coast Newspaper/TCPalm.com, Ocean Media Solutions, Valpak, Palm Beach Post Newspaper/ PalmBeachPost.com, MoneySaver Coupons, Refresh Local, and YOU, Sage Dental wants to help end hunger in the South Florida community. Global Glasses By Dr. David Yudell and Dr. Stacey McCaffrey

I

am watching the news. The “BREAKING NEWS” (it is always breaking news these days) says Baton Rouge Shooting Still “Active Working Scene.” This is the newest violence a few days after the truck massacre in Nice, France. While some may be asking what is happening in this world, others are realizing the long-term effects of these events. As adults, we are getting desensitized. It is one tragedy after another. Another shooting, a nightclub attack, protests, disasters over seas, disasters at home. Americans, foreign citizens, police. It feels as if we are not safe anymore. Now imagine that you are growing up in this period of time. How does the current increased levels of violence affect our children and their views of the world. Currently, I am able to share that the cases of anxiety, fear and concern that enter my office remain within typical fears (medical procedures, flying, contamination from germs or dirt, etc.…). I have been able to help them work through these concerns. During events like the Swine Flu and Ebola I worked with children who shared their fears of those conditions with me. I am pleasantly surprised to report that the world violence does not appear to have

entered our children’s worldview. The question that presents itself is – what do we do when it does? When I speak with adults the violence becomes part of the conversation. People are acutely aware. My recommendation for children is simple. Educate based on the age of your child. As always, answer their questions but try to limit it to the question. Be careful to not go on beyond what they are actually asking. My last direction is to filter your dialogue when your children are around. It becomes much more important when they express fears than when they do not, yet it remains advisable either way. While we cannot raise them in a glass dome, we can work to limit what they need to know and help them to focus on the joys of being raised in a free society that nurtures their minds, provides countless athletic opportunities, rewards altruistic endeavors and encourages artistic expression. We need to use our “glasses” to remember the joys and beauty in our world. I invite you to reach out to me for future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.

W

ould you know if your child had suffered a concussion? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions occur each year, and that 5-10 percent of athletes will experience a concussion during any given sport season. Yet, many parents with active kids do not know the signs and symptoms of a concussion or when a concussion could happen. Kids often become involved in a wide variety of games, including soccer or lacrosse, two of the many contact sports that make them vulnerable to injuries and concussions. Additionally, even when a child is involved in a recreational sport such as bicycle riding, skateboarding or rollerblading, he or she could be at risk for concussions. “If your son or daughter has signs or symptoms of a concussion – including, but not limited to, an injury with a subsequent headache, feeling like he or she is in a fog, dizziness or confusion – the child should immediately be pulled from the sport and evaluated by a healthcare professional,” says Dr. Matthew Fazekas, a pediatric sports medicine specialist and a member of the team of physicians at the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic. SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION USUALLY FALL INTO FOUR CATEGORIES:

Thinking/Remembering

Physical

• Difficulty thinking clearly • Feeling slowed down • Difficulty concentrating • Difficulty remembering new information

• Headache • Fuzzy or blurry vision • Nausea or vomiting (early on) • Dizziness • Sensitivity to noise or light • Balance problems • Feeling tired, having no energy

Emotional/Mood

Sleep

• Irritability • Sadness • More emotional • Nervousness or anxiety

• Sleeping more than usual • Sleeping less than usual • Trouble falling asleep

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Opens the Doors to Its New Concussion Clinic The new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic is led by a world-class team of physicians who are board certified in sports medicine, pediatric neurology, pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, and pediatric neuropsychology, as well as a team of certified vestibular therapists. “The concussion clinic is set up as a one-stop shop where patients will go through a full neurological examination. They may undergo neurocognitive testing, and start a process of return-to-learning and return-to-sports, as directed by the physician,” Dr. Fazekas says. The clinic operates from four locations: Hollywood, Coral Springs, Boca Raton and Weston. It is the multidisciplinary effort of many JDCH specialists who work together. In addition to Dr. Fazekas, these include Dr. Diana Martínez, medical director of the Division of Pediatric Neurology; Dr. Stacy Stibb, a pediatric physiatrist; Dr. Virmarie Quinones-Pagán, a pediatric rehabilitation specialist; and Dr. Christina M. Zafiris, a pediatric neuropsychologist. For more information about the Concussion Clinic, or to make an appointment, please call (954) 538-5566.

very 90 seconds, one WWII veteran passes away, along with his/her stories. Thanks to the generous donation of Broward County Association of Student Council (BCASC), a group of Veterans recently had an opportunity to visit Washington D.C. on an Honor Flight to see the National World War II Memorial that was erected in their honor. Because it was built 60 years after the war ended, most veterans have never seen it. The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans. It includes approximately 140 hubs throughout the country. Since Honor Flight South Florida (HFSF) was formed in 2012, it has organized eight flights for 451 veterans. Many of the veterans describe the trip as the “best day of their lives.” The program transports America’s veterans free of charge on a one-day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifice they have made on behalf of our country. Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes - survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served. In Washington D.C., the veterans are accompanied by a police escort as they visit Arlington Cemetery for front row seats at the Changing of the Guard, WWII Memorial and Vietnam Memorial Wall; eat lunch at the Knights of Columbus building and much more. During

mail call on the airplane ride home, they receive heartfelt letters and thank you notes from family members, students, teachers and business people and there is not usually a dry eye in the crowd. As they exit the terminal, they are met by thousands of people giving them the homecoming that they never received. “If not for these veterans, we wouldn’t be here right now,” said Ryan Paton, HFSF Director of Operations. “It is very important for all of us to serve those that wear the uniform and protect our country.” This is the 3rd year that BCASC has raised money for Honor Flight. Throughout the year, Broward County Public School students sold doughnuts and American flags, held dodgeball/kickball tournaments and more. In return, World War II veterans visited the schools to give the students firsthand accounts of WWII. Many of the students learned about the war for the first time. At a school board meeting, BCASC president Brandon Frantz, who will be attending the United States Naval Academy in the fall, presented a check for $40,100 to Rick Asper, chair of HFSF. Asper explained that the money, along with donations from airline partners, was enough to send an entire flight of veterans to Washington D.C., including 80 veterans from both World War II and Vietnam. Veterans who are unable to travel can attend a Virtual Honor Flight, which is held at South Plantation High School and run entirely by Broward County students. The event includes dinner, bands, performances, and guest speakers, as

well as a movie that takes them on a virtual trip to the same places the other veterans visit in Washington D.C. At the end of the event, they exit to a parade of more than 2,000 people cheering and waving flags. HFSF’s next flight will be held in October aboard one of the biggest passenger planes in the world. The plane will accommodate 200 Veterans, instead of 75. Organizers are still looking for 100 WWII veterans to fill the plane. “Everyone knows a WWII veteran or comes across them throughout the day,” said Paton. “This would be one of the best days of their lives. Every step of the way, they are treated like royalty. Everything is covered and they have a personal Guardian who is with them all day, taking care of everything they need. We encourage people to talk to their family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, church members, temple members, and club members to let them know that we need to get our local WWII veterans on this trip of a lifetime for what they have done for our country.” HFSF is always looking for guardians to fly with the WWII Veterans. They can be family members, friends or just those interested in supporting the Veterans. Guardians must pay a $400 fee, which covers their airline ticket, meals, snacks and Honor Flight materials. There are a few restrictions, which are listed on the HFSF website. “I wish that everyone could have the opportunity to be a guardian,” said Paton. “It is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Our guardians learn so much and get to experience the best of America. They forge a lifelong friendship with the WWII veterans and their families.”

“E

ducation is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom,” said George Washington Carver. As your Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Countywide School Board Member, I know this creed to be true. As our students, families and employees prepare for the new school year, this message serves as our guiding principle. Each and every student must have access to the best educational opportunities to lay the foundation for success in life. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our students and families, returning and new, to the 2016/17 school year, and share some of the exciting initiatives underway in our District. One of the new opportunities for our families and community members this year is an improved BCPS mobile app. It is free to download and, over the coming months, will feature real-time information regarding students’ attendance, grades, school lunch accounts and even bus tracking information. The School Board invested in this app with the goal of continuing to improve effective communication, as one of the three pillars identified in our Strategic Plan. We are also continuing our focus on our two other Strategic Plan pillars: highquality instruction and continuous improvement. Evidence of our dedication to these areas will be highlighted during our District’s re-accreditation this year. BCPS is proud to be Florida’s first fully accredited K–12 school system, a distinction the District has held since 1962. We look forward to working with our students,

parents, community members and staff during this important process, as we strive to provide the highest-quality school system for our students. Our mission is to educate all students to reach their highest potential. We are proud to be home to many of the best high schools in the nation and state. According to U.S. News and World Report, 16 of our high schools rank among the best high schools in the nation. In addition, a majority of our high schools, 26 in all, earned placement on The Washington Post’s list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools for 2016. BCPS also has a large and growing portfolio of educational opportunities throughout the District. BCPS offers Montessori, Cambridge and STEM magnet programs; kindergarten – eighth (K–8) grade campuses; Advanced Placement courses and Dual Enrollment; the largest Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) cadet program in the nation; innovative programs; the arts; technology and computer science programs; Scholastic Chess; athletics; and mentoring groups, just to name a few. We also have the largest debate initiative in the country, with debate programs in every high school and expanding to include all middle schools. These are just some of the incredible programs and initiatives offered across our District. You can learn more about BCPS by visiting our website at browardschools.com. As we begin this school year, I wish the greatest success for all of our students. I encourage families to stay engaged, seek learning opportunities throughout your community and take advantage of all of the incredible educational opportunities available at our schools.

EVERYONE HAS A SUPER POWER AT RAMBLEWOOD ELEMENTARY

W

elcome Back Ramblewood Elementary students, teachers and staff and a special welcome to all our new and Kindergarten students! We are very excited about all of the teaching and learning planned for the 2016-2017 school year! Our theme this year will be “Everyone Has a Super Power at Ramblewood.” Our focus will be centered around the growth of knowledge for each young superhero on campus. Ramblewood Elementary will continue with our Dual Language program. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual by learning, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English and in Spanish. We will continue with our program this year in Kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade then next year expand the program to the fourth grade. Coming soon to Ramblewood Elementary are more clubs offered after school hours; Dance, Chorus, Garden, Robotics, Painting, Ceramics, Advertising, Baseball and Active Rams Club just to name a few. More information will be available in September. Don’t forget Ramblewood is a uniform school. Our expectation is that every child wear their uniform and/or school colors. Waivers are available in the front office. If you need after care, “Camp Rams” is available before school from 6:45am – 7:45am and after school from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. The aftercare program offers a variety of activities such as homework help, World Geography, Sign Language, Yoga, Martial Arts, Magic Lessons, Dance Lessons, Game Room, Computers and Arts and Crafts, just to name a few. If you haven’t joined PTO, I encourage you to do so. PTO provides in-house field trips for students, purchases LCD projectors for classrooms, organizes fundraisers for the school, sells uniforms, shirts/spirit shirts, plans social events for our families and much more. Their touch is felt all over the school. Please support their efforts by joining today. PTO can be found on FaceBook at:

facebook.com/ramblewoodelementaryPTO. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out a form at www.getinvolvedineducation.com. As a result of the many hours our volunteers have given to our school, we received the Golden School Award again this year.

Hunt Elementary School & the Coral Springs Police host successful summer Breakspot program J

ames S. Hunt Elementary would like to extend a huge thank you to the Coral Springs Police Department for coordinating the Summer Breakspot Program. The Coral Springs Police Department has once again proven their commitment and passion for serving the community. The program ran throughout the summer and was a huge success. Students from our community and other local schools had the opportunity to interact with local law enforcement personnel in a nurturing, fun environment for all. Students received a free, hot lunch and participated in sports, academics, engaging presentations, and were able to build relationships with their local police officers. The City of Coral Springs is fortunate to have such a dedicated group of public servants! As we begin the journey of a new school year, we are looking forward to

building on the great academic successes we had this past year. James S. Hunt Elementary earned a B grade for the 2015–2016 school year. The hard work and dedication of our staff, students, families, and the Hunt community paid off. t is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to the 2016/17 school year. I hope that all of our students and families enjoyed quality time with friends and loved ones over the summer break and are now looking forward to the start of another successful school year. Across Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), I am proud of the work we are doing to serve our students and families. We are inspiring our students to take on academic challenges, engaging young minds to master logical thinking, preparing students for college and careers, closing achievement gaps and collaborating with the community for educational priorities. At the heart of everything we do is the belief and knowledge that every student deserves a world-class education. Education opens doors to the future and levels playing fields, allowing our youth to grow and develop into responsible, productive adults who are empowered to pursue their dreams and become the leaders of tomorrow. From our youngest pre-kindergarten learners – through elementary, middle and high school – to our adult education students, we are working hard to educate all students to reach their highest potential. Our schools continually receive recognition for their commitment to excellence in education. In 2016, 26 BCPS high schools were recognized as “America’s Most Challenging” by The Washington Post, 16 BCPS high schools were ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and 10 of our District’s magnet programs earned the prestigious National Merit Awards from Magnet Schools of America. In addition, the District’s overall Advanced Placement pass rate is the highest in more than 10 years. Our schools also offer nationally ranked debate programs, the nation’s largest JROTC program, outstanding performing arts programs, and top-ranked athletic programs, including multiple state championships in 2016.

Looking ahead to the 2016/17 school year: •

The District is expanding its Digital Classrooms program, which provides students with a blended, personalized learning environment, to include 100 BCPS elementary schools. This is an increase from 27 schools in the program’s inaugural 2013/14 school year. Through the Digital Classroom initiative and its focus on providing a one-to-one student to computer ratio, we are creating curriculum content that fits students’ individual needs to maximize their learning. The District is launching Dual Language Programs at nine additional schools, for a total of at least 35 elementary schools. Dual Language Programs are an educational approach in which students learn two

• •

languages in an instructional setting to promote biliteracy, cross-cultural awareness and high academic achievement. Computer science continues to grow among elementary and middle schools, and is now offered at all of the District’s high schools. BCPS recently became a Professional Learning Partner with Code.org to increase the capacity to train teachers and build a local community for computer science. Additionally, through this partnership, 34 high schools and centers are offering the new college-level Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles course in 2016/17. The District is increasing Montessori, magnet programs and K-8 schools, giving families more educational options for their children. BCPS continues its strong focus on early learning and ensuring children have the skills they need to start school. We are strengthening our collaboration with families, communities and early child care providers to support a solid academic foundation for our youngest learners.

For all of our students to be successful, we must work together to create learning communities that support students’ academic needs, while making it easier for parents and families to be involved in their child’s education. In 2016/17, we are excited to continue rolling out the Naviance – Family Connection for our middle and high school students. Through Naviance – Family Connection, students are able to align their strengths and interests to their postsecondary goals, while exploring career options and learning about college preparation. We are also excited about upgrades to our District’s free mobile app, which over the next few months, will allow parents to monitor grades, attendance, assignments, cafeteria menus and account balances, bus routes, and more– all in one place, making it easier than ever for parents to stay informed. You can download the District’s free mobile app by visiting your app store from your smart phone or mobile device. These are just some of the exciting initiatives underway in Broward County Public Schools. As we look forward to our next 100 years of educational excellence, I encourage you to learn more about our District by visiting our website, browardschools.com, which includes important information on our schools and programs. Also on our website is our Back to School toolkit, which connects students and parents with a variety of resources. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, August 22, 2016.

By: Russell W. Schwartz Principal, Park Trails Elementary

am writing to you to introduce (reintroduce for some) myself and welcome you to the 2016–2017 school year! To start, my name is Russell Schwartz and I am the newly appointed principal of the great Park Trails Elementary. I return to Park Trails with 15 years of experience in education with the previous 4 serving as the principal of McNab Elementary. After beginning my teaching career in Orlando, I moved to south Florida and was hired at Park Trails Elementary by Ms. Renguso and Mr. King as a 4th grade teacher. My time at Park Trails was some of the most memorable of my career. The connections I made with the students and families were some of the most rewarding that I have experienced. As principal of McNab Elementary, I worked

together with faculty, staff, parents, the community, and STUDENTS to provide a highquality educational experience. The hard work of all led to great success despite many challenges facing education. The focus has always been, and will always be, on the students. I would also like to share that we are breaking open the lines of communication. You can join the Park Trails text message group that I will utilize to share important, time-sensitive information. To join, send a text message “@ptef” to: 81010. Also, you can begin following Park Trails on Twitter (@ParkTrailsES) and Instagram (@ ParkTrailsES). I am so excited to once again be a member of the Park Trails family and to work together to move us forward in the future – Thank you!

Our theme this year at Westchester is “Open Minds = Endless Possibilities.” We want to focus on thinking outside of the box, exploring new avenues, and solving complex problems. In addition to every classroom being a “SMART” classroom, all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will receive their own laptops to use for the year. All kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students will have a 4:1 ratio with computers/tablets in their classrooms as well.

love the excitement of a new school year. There are so many smiling faces eager to meet their teachers, bring in their new supplies, wear their new clothes, and start the new school year ready to learn. This year is sure to be filled with many new adventures. I am excited to announce that this school year, we will break ground on a new 24-room classroom addition. With that in mind, we chose our theme for the year – More than Bricks, Building our Future! I think this theme is perfect with so many important messages. Riverglades’ staff works together to build a solid foundation for our students. The foundation and lessons we construct will lead students to a successful future. In addition, fourth and fifth grade will also become D4 and D5

(Digital) classrooms. This means all 4th and 5th grade students will have an individual laptop to use as part of their daily instruction. The teachers will be able to integrate technology into their daily instruction using a program called Canvas. I am blessed to have such an active and passionate PTA. We share the same vision to make Riverglades the best school in Broward County. In a collaborative effort between the school and PTA, Riverglades will have a brand new state of the art broadcast system for morning announcements, new laptop computers, and new yoga ball chairs to assist students with focusing. PTA also funded teacher wish lists and eco-friendly filtered water fountains with bottle fillers. I look forward to a fabulous 2016 – 2017 school year.
