Mayor Christine Hunschofsky presented a proclamation declaring that December 11th would be Anthony Rizzo Day in Parkland. Coral Springs local LPGA star Lexi Thompson out our events section for the details! It is great when our local celebrity athletes come back to support their community. The school year is in full swing and there are wonderful new, innovative programs in our local schools that prepare our children for the future. In this issue, you’ll read about how the schools spent the holidays teaching the children how to give back and to focus on charity. There is a story on two amazing young ladies from Parkland that started their own charity called “Samaritans Purse”. Spring season offers so many sports and activities. From baseball, lacrosse, flag football, track and field, to dance, gymnastics, music, art, and so much more. Try to find a good mix between academics, clubs and sports for your children. It can be challenging because we are but we are lucky to have so many options, but you can find it all here! Remember to plan for summer camp early by checking our Camp Preview Section!

Top 5 Reasons To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer “T

oday’s tax laws are complex, burdensome and continually changing,” says Bruce Weinberg, Florida Managing Partner of Weinberg and Company, P.A. Tax forms can be tedious and often times very confusing. Having an accountant who is experienced in tax matters can help ensure that all of your information remains organized, the correct paperwork gets filed, and that you never fall behind. Bruce is often asked what are the benefits to hiring a professional tax preparer. His firm has provided us with five top reasons you should hire a professional tax preparer: 1. It takes the hassle out of doing it yourself. 2. You don’t have to keep up with the many tax law changes or understand complicated tax law. 3. Making mistakes can be very costly. 4. Your time is worth money. 5. A tax professional is educated on the many tax credits that are available to

businesses and individuals. You never want to miss out on any of these. In addition to doing your taxes for you, professional accountants can guide you and give advice on any financial-related matters or decisions. They become a trusted and valued part of your business and finance team. Beyond tax season, professional accountants can help you cut costs and operate more efficiently to help you save more of your money, now and in the future. For more information on hiring a professional tax preparer, feel free to contact Bruce Weinberg at (561) 487-5765 or visit www.cpaweinberg.com.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs:

ROCK DREAMS At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group.

FIT FRIENDS Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks

F loridaDivorceLaw.com is a new self-service

website for individuals and couples who need to get divorced or to resolve their child custody issues, but who would prefer to do so without hiring attorneys? The do-it-yourself site was created by Florida Bar Board Certified Marital and Family Law Attorney Nancy K. Brodzki, Esquire, senior partner in the highly respected Coral Springs law firm of Brodzki Jacobs & Associates, P.L. More and more, people are seeking simple, inexpensive ways of getting divorced or resolving their child custody issues. FloridaDivorceLaw.com is specifically designed to help such families. They are then guided through a step-by-step process of answering simple questions, resulting in their receiving a complete packet of forms needed to file their divorce or custody case anywhere in the state of Florida. Along with their completed forms, users receive detailed instructions on how to properly complete the forms for filing, as well as how to file the forms with the Clerk of Court in the county in which they are filing the case. In addition to creating the customized online forms

and instructions, registered users who need extra help can also access helpful, live assistance while completing their forms, at a very low additional cost. Our Florida Registered Paralegals are qualified to assist users in ensuring that the forms are properly completed, and to further guide them in filing their cases. Those who need legal advice may also contact Marital and Family Law Attorneys through the site, so that they may efficiently obtain case strategy and practical guidance for their particular circumstances. The website’s attorneys are also available to be hired on a limited basis at affordable rates for hearings and mediation. The purpose of FloridaDivorceLaw.com is to provide quality legal and paralegal services, forms and guidance to the millions of Floridians who need legal help but can’t afford traditional lawyers’ fees. For as little as $49.95, the site provides everything an individual needs to file his or her case. So if you or someone you know is considering a divorce, or has a child custody issue with their child’s other parent, remember FloridaDivorceLaw.com for a low cost alternative to traditional divorce lawyers. The site provides a simple, self-service solution, with the ability to easily access lawyers and paralegals for those who need a little extra help.

A Healthier : e c r o iv D Expert Tips To A More Peaceful Process – Part II By Dr. David Yudell & Eric Rayman, Esq. (Family Law)

Tips 1 through 4 were provided in the last issue. For a copy of part

one please feel free to email us (see below).

Tip #5: Know what you own and make copies

Just like any big undertaking, knowledge is power. Understanding the rules of the game and the essential do’s and don’ts improves your odds of a successful outcome. Planning for your divorce is no exception. Begin by making a list of assets, debts, and sources of income. Try to obtain at least three years of tax returns. Gather retirement-benefit information and insurance declaration pages. Make copies of everything. The more information you collect the better as there will be a point in the divorce where you’ll have to review your cost of living (see Tip #6 below). It is also a good idea to create a record of all valuables such as jewelry and collectibles. Take photos as sometimes these items “disappear.” Sign up for electronic statements for your new created individual accounts so that your spouse can’t access by opening the mail. Also, be sure to change online account passwords so that your spouse isn’t tempted to log in to your stuff. Once you’ve collected these documents, it is time to seek legal advice to determine the most efficiently path to resolution with the goal of preserving financial resources.

Tip #6: Develop a plan

Understanding what you may be entitled to under the law is critical. An experienced attorney will guide you through the process and help determine the right strategy to resolve your case. Whether you have questions about alimony, entitlement to benefits, how to value the family business, or something unique to the case, you are not expected

to travel down this road alone. Organizing your documents before meeting with your attorney sends a clear signal that you are prepared and ready to tackle the process. The more involved you are, the more invested you become, and the more confident you will feel in the outcome. Look at how you want your family to “move forward” both during and after the divorce. Therapists, family members, neighbors and friends can be there to help. Keep you communication at a high level, try to work on co-parenting and move in a positive direction.

Tip #7: Big Picture

Viewing your divorce as a speed bump rather than the end of road is meaningful. Perspective is everything as you move forward along this journey. Time does heals old wounds and the best advise often comes from those you love and those who may have already traveled down this road and came out better the other side. A peaceful divorce requires forgiveness. Although you may never get an actual apology from your ex, being able to forgive and move past this chapter only benefits you. Have the courage to forgive so that you can look forward to a brighter future. While there is no perfect way to divorce, your attitude and outlook are critical in framing the process. If you put in the effort, you can and will find the happiness you deserve. We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrYudell@DrYudell.com or Erayman@gjb-law.com

Valentines Day Dance Forest Hills is looking forward to their annual Valentines Day Dance. The dance will take place on February 10, 2017 from 6:00pm – 8:30 p.m. In addition to having a DJ, there will be a photo booth, face painting, games, and a dinner will also be served. Students have been preparing and are looking forward to having an amazing time at the Forest Hills Valentine’s Day Dance. Free Tutoring This year Forest Hills is providing free afterschool tutoring for students in grades 3–5. These tutorial sessions are designed to assist our borderline and underperforming students with standard-based instruction. Sessions will be held twice per week to remediate and expand upon the necessary skills needed for the upcoming statewide FSA Assessment. Our staff and students are extremely dedicated and we know their hard work will payoff! Quantum Leap Program During the month of January our Quantum Leap (high achieving) classes provided projects and attended the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. program sponsored by the City of Coral Springs. Artwork was on display at The Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts throughout the Dr. King holiday. At an awards assembly held January 12, 2016, many Forest Hills students in grades K–5 received trophies and were recognized on stage for their outstanding artwork. All participants received participation ribbons. We look forward to participating in this event again next year as our Quantum classes have already begun brainstorming ways to portray the life and many accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dual Language Program New to Forest Hills this year is our Dual Language program. This program allows kindergarten students to be immersed in Spanish for half of the instructional day and English for the other half of the day. Through the Dual-Language program students explore basic Spanish as well as the varying Spanish customs throughout the world. Next year we look forward to expanding this program to include our first grade students as well.

T

he after school Nature Club at Sawgrass Springs Middle School has partnered with our next door neighbor the Sawgrass Nature Center to build a sense of environmental and ecological awareness within our students. The program consists of guest speakers, field trips, and curriculum-related lessons with crafts that all engage students in our mission to acquire and share knowledge towards the importance of Florida’s natural resources blended with school and community outreach. Both indigenous wildlife and domestic animal and plant life is shared to extend factual knowledge to hands-on activities so that participation becomes a real life learning experience.

This year’s calendar of events is sure enough to have any middle school student wanting to come join us! Events Include: Introduction to Club and tree cookie craft, On-campus Gopher Tortoise Preserve and Presentation, Ocean Acidification guest speaker and hands-on science lab to real life problem solution discussion, birds of prey, 100+ Dogs of Everglades Rescue Presentation, “Loco for Cocoa” Outreach Program, and Nature Club Celebration. necessary to perform tasks in healthcare, some schools have even begun to offer training in the Microsoft suite of programs, including Word, Outlook, and Excel. Students are able to engage in competitions through organizations like HOSA, and instructors work diligently to supplement their in-class teaching with site-based learning through experiences like clinicals and facility tours. Instructors and CTACE staff work together to offer students these experiences, working with facilities like Cleveland Clinic and Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital. Recently, students from our high school programs participated in the Day in the Life of a Nurse program as well as the Broward College Health Sciences tour. Students were able to learn what nurses face on a daily basis and preview many of the pathways available to them in the healthcare fields. his issue’s Pathway focus is Health Sciences. Among the fastest growing, steadiest, and most profitable fields in the workforce, jobs in Healthcare nationwide are expected to grow 19% in the next decade; in Broward county, careers in healthcare and related fields are expected to grow by nearly 20%. Because there are so many career paths for those entering the field of healthcare, highlighting an accurate average salary is nearly impossible. However, as a point of reference, the average pay for a Physician’s Assistant – which requires a Master’s Degree – is upwards of $95,000 nationwide. Additionally, Dental Hygienists earn an average of nearly $70,000 a year and require only an Associate’s Degree. Suffice it to say that our student population has a vast array of entry points into the healthcare field, and all of them lead to sustainable careers with long-term potential for growth. Across Broward County Public Schools, the CTACE Department oversees health science programs across twenty-one high schools, servicing over 6,000 students in courses such as allied health, practical nursing, medical skills and services, firefighting, emergency medical responding, vet assisting, and biotechnology. Last year, students earned hundreds of industry-level certifications, such as Certified EKG Technician and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant. Given the office-related skills

uring the 2016–2017 school year, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s DECA Chapter has created its Community Service Project, Project Giveaway. With it, project leaders Carmen Lo and Ariana Ortega have strived to create a community in which members unite to “give away” their time and resources towards helping those in need around them and towards helping to combat hunger, poverty, and homelessness. The project’s goal is to help DECA chapter members develop a better understanding of the role civic activities have in society, while making a contribution towards helping those around them. Each of the project’s events tie into DECA’s themes of “community service” and “experienced leaders,” as they offer members opportunities to aid their community and to develop their leadership skills. The project is working with the Broward Outreach Center, a homeless shelter located in Pompano Beach, Florida, which houses over 200 individuals. The Broward Outreach Center provides educational and specialized programs that enhance the professional skills of their clients. These programs prepare clients for interviews and future careers, similar to how the DECA organization prepares its members. One of Project Giveaway’s most popular and successful events is its quarterly PB&J event. The events take place after school hours, and students have the opportunity to donate peanut butter, jelly, and bread, as well as to help prepare sandwiches that are

O

then given to both the Broward Outreach Center and LifeNet4Families. With the help of over 150 students, business partners, and various community members, Project Giveaway has prepared over 2,000 sandwiches, collected over 300 jars of peanut butter and jelly and 200 loaves of bread and received over $200 in monetary donations. In addition to the PB&J drives, the project held a Thanksgiving Lunch Event for 200 individuals at the Broward Outreach Center. Volunteers and attendees were able to interact with one another through a series of activities for clients of all ages, including face painting, arts and crafts, karaoke, dancing, and picture taking. Volunteers dressed up in costumes and gave out over 100 bags of candy and toys. Recently, items collected during the Project Giveaway clothing drive were delivered to the center. A total of 700 articles of clothing and 80 pairs of shoes were collected by the DECA chapter and local community members. On February 10th, Project Giveaway will host the Oxfam Hunger Banquet. In this event, attendees will participate in a simulation that highlights the imbalanced distribution of food in our world and will aid in creating awareness of the proximity of poverty and inequality in our community. Proceeds from the event will be given to organizations that help in combatting hunger. If you are interested in participating in Project Giveaway, please contact us at msdprojectgiveaway@gmail.com and visit our Facebook page, Project Giveaway.

n Saturday, November 12, Temple Beth Chai Religious School hosted their fourth annual Jewish Turkey Trot at North Community Park in Coral Springs (5601 Coral Springs Drive). Students walked, ran or trotted around a quarter-mile track, raising $5.00 from enlisted sponsors for each completed lap. All money raised by the students will be matched by Temple Beth Chai Religious School. “Learning about Mitzvot is an essential part of Temple Beth Chai Religious School’s curriculum,” said Education Director Phyllis Lasky. “Our annual Jewish Turkey Trot is the perfect way for our ‘Chai Kids’ to give back to the community. We are proud to be able to help many families through the Domestic Abuse Program at JFS.” Proceeds from the Turkey Trot were used to purchase Publix food cards and Wal-Mart gift cards for families of domestic abuse who are receiving assistance from JFS of Broward County. The funds allowed JFS to make the holidays more festive for these area families by providing Thanksgiving meals, gifts and treats for Chanukah, and Chanukah presents for young children.

SCHOOLS Our PTA has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this project! We will be hosting a celebration once the playground is completed. On January 21st, we will be participating in the Dan Marino Foundation WalkAbout Autism and Expo. The walk will take place at the Miami Dolphins Stadium. Each year thousands of people come together to support autism awareness and enjoy a fun-filled day with their families, friends, classmates, and colleagues. Also, our fourth grade will be visiting the historic city of St. Augustine in January. Many students from all areas of the state visit this city as it offers students an exceptional learning opportunity focused on Florida and American history. Eagle Ridge Debate Team Wins Big E

agle Ridge Elementary School’s debate team participated in their first tournament at Cypress Bay High School this last December. The team, advised by fifth-grade teacher Aimee Vignola, won a total of eight medals. “We were shocked and honored and humbled, because we worked so hard and did not expect this outcome,” said Vignola. Vignola, a former English and journalism teacher at JP Taravella High School, was thrilled to lead the debate team, teaching students critical thinking, research, and writing. Her team of 23 students competed in different categories including a congressional debate, original oratory, and poetry presentation. “My students had to research and debate one of two bills to compete in the Congressional Debate at the tournament,” said Vignola. “My “Senators” had to choose whether they were for or against raising the federal minimum wage to $15, or they had to debate for or against raising taxes on the “wealthy” in this country, those earning more than $250,000 a year, in order to fund food shortage programs, like food stamps.” Because the team competed in several different categories, it was difficult for Vignola to see each student’s events. However, the dedicated parents of Eagle Ridge attended as well to support the team as much as possible. “Luckily, we have

By Anna Winslow

extremely supportive parents at ERE and many were able to attend and watch their own children and children’s friends debate and give speeches, so, as a team, we tried to cover all of our bases,” said Vignola. Following two rounds of debate, some high school debate students who judged the competition gave the participants mini lessons on how to improve their presentation skills. The awards were then given out with Eagle Ridge winning eight out of the ten medals distributed for their congressional debate. The champion of the congressional debate was Eagle Ridge student Tyler Minevich, who received a distinct medal for his work. “I felt proud to be able to share my feelings on a topic that hundreds of people also share with me,” said Minevich. “I also liked how many friends supported me. They are the real reason I went that far.” Through preparing for the tournament, students were able to learn about current issues and arguments, creating interest in debate for the participants. Vignola hopes her student’s participation in the competition will inspire them to continue with debate in the future. “I hope they carry on what they are learning now into their chosen field of study and I do hope they stay with debate,” said Vignola. “It’s mind blowing what it can do for our students. Even the young ones!”

e are having an amazing school year at Park Trails Elementary! We have had many wonderful events at our school over the past few months. One of our most successful events was our Park Trails Book Fair this fall. We also had tons of fun at our annual Halloween Family night, especially with our Hogwarts theme this year. Our PTA rocks! Just recently our Singsations performed their holiday songs at several locations. Some of these locations included the Fort Lauderdale Airport, Aston Gardens, Roberts Theater, and an evening performance for our Park Trails families. We love seeing our students display their talents. In January we will be celebrating Literacy Week between January 23rd and January 27th. We have planned many fun and exciting literacy activities for this week. We are extremely excited about the completion of our new playground.

First Grade Field Trip to Supermercado El Bodegon Hunt Elementary first grade students enjoyed a guided tour of Supermercado El Bodegon. The staff took the classes through the various sections of the market where they learned about the daily operations. They especially enjoyed hearing about the produce, fish and meat departments. After our visit, the students were treated to freshly baked cookies from the fantastic bakery. McDonald’s was the next stop on our field trip. The boys and girls loved their Happy Meals! A special thank you to our Partners in Excellence at the Supermercado and McDonald’s. A big thanks to our school resource officers for getting us to our destinations safely. The trip was engaging and provided realworld fun for our students. Hunt Chorus Performances Our fifty chorus members represented James S. appy 2017! We hope all of our families had a wonderful winter break and enjoyed the time off. Our staff truly enjoyed the way the calendar gave us the week after the New Year to relax and recuperate. We want to thank our PTA for all of the fun activities and treats we had before winter break. Polar Express Day, Field Day, Movie Night and our Holiday Concert were all big hits. Thanks for your continued support. Coming up in February we will be having a Valentines Dance on February 10th from 6:00pm – 8:30pm. We are all looking forward to a fun evening. Please make sure you have sent in your RSVP to ensure we still have space available. These last few weeks our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have been busy assessing on the Broward Standard Assessment. Teachers will be using this data to make instructional decisions for your children over the next few weeks to ensure we have prepared your children to be successful

High School. The finale, performed by over 300 hundred students, was the highlight of the evening. The combined voices off all the children touched every audience member. In addition to the Zone Concert, the Hunt Chorus once again presented our annual Holiday Concert under the leadership of Ms. Groulx, our chorus teacher. The Chorus sang for a wonderful crowd of family and friends in the spirit of the holiday season. One student played the steel drum as an accompaniment. Two students also performed a dance during one of the songs. The talent on display was impressive. Hunt is committed to developing the many talents of our students. Hunt PTO Winter Festival The Hunt Elementary PTO Winter Festival took place on Saturday, January 28, 2016, in the field at Lions Park. From 10:30am to 1:30pm there were slides, bounce-houses and game booths where many won prizes! A variety of delicious food choices were also be available. amblewood Elementary hosted a Robotics Tournament recently where twelve teams throughout South Florida showed up to compete. Student teams were led by coaches and members ranged from elementary age to middle school level. Teams competed in categories such as Robot Design, which involves the construction of their robot made of Legos. The Robot Performance category is a challenging obstacle course in which teams program and run their robots through. Project category is where each team has to research a problem and come up with a unique solution, and Core Values is all about teamwork and solving a challenging problem together. It was an honor for our school to host this event and we hope all of the teams had fun and were able to take back valuable learning experiences to their schools. We also recently hosted our annual Field Day for students. They competed in grade-level competitions in a variety of sports: Hungry Hungry Hippo, which allowed students to use various muscle groups, a Capacity Race where students had to balance and run and jump, Tug-of-War and basketball too. Our annual Winter Holiday Show was AMAZING! Students in our fifth grade chorus took us on a trip back in time to the 80’s and sang a plethora of songs from numerous nationalities such as Hawaii, Africa, and even some classics with a twist! Their performance was top notch, and an example of what true holiday spirit is all about.

n an effort to develop an outdoor classroom for the children of Country Hills Elementary, a partnership was forged between CHE and Lowe’s. On, September 2016, Mrs. Read, a 2nd grade teacher, and CHE’s PTA saw a dream to develop a space where learning could take place outside the confines of a classrooms’ four walls. A letter was written defining the mission and placed into the hands of the people that could make this happen. The initial undertaking was simple; a few planter beds were built in order to grow a vegetable garden. However, the Lowe’s Hero Project team saw opportunity for greater. Once the plans for the eventual vegetable garden were in place, focus turned to beautifying several spaces around the school that had become neglected for many years (overgrown roots, clogged gutters, flooded walkways). The plans were executed into two phases. During phase one,

uring the month of November, the 7th grade civic students at Imagine Charter School at Broward conducted a school-wide food drive for the Hurricane Matthew victims in Haiti. After viewing a very moving presentation by a local organization, the Food for the Poor organization, students were motivated to make a difference in the world. The students made posters to hang all over the school to encourage the other students to participate. Each grade was assigned specific items that were most needed. More than 1,000 lbs. of tuna, Spam, canned fruits and vegetables, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and peanut butter was collected. Civics teachers, Theresa Swope and Kristen Kladke, encourage their students to directly get involved in community projects to demonstrate

the planter beds were installed. On the following day, staff members, parents, and students planted flowers, seeds, fruits and vegetables. Lowe’s not only donated planter boxes for this area, but they included picnic benches, umbrellas, plants, sheds, tools, and so much more. This phase was a joint effort between Lowe’s and the PTA. Phase two involved Lowe’s Product Service Team and a partnership with the area Lowe’s Lose Prevention team. This included workers from twelve different stores across the TriCounty area. A team of approximately 50 Lowe’s employees descended upon CHE to execute what is known in Lowe’s land as a Lowe’s Heroes project. This program provides service to the community including labor and materials in order to benefit community organizations. That day, they saw a long neglected courtyard revitalized by a group of hardworking individuals focused on a single goal.

citizenship. Many of the students are now working on behalf of several different charities in our community. Their students now understand the positive impact they can make as global citizens. The five 7th grade homerooms held a competition to see which homeroom would donate the most requested items. After all of the items were weighed, Mrs. Fusco’s homeroom was declared the winner. Students helped collect and sort the food from the elementary classes and the items were picked up at the school, located on Westview Drive in Coral Springs, by a Food for the Poor truck. The students were very proud of their accomplishments and realized that they certainly could make an impact when they all worked together.

hen Alfred Guerra’s Coral Springs Panthers left the field for the last time back in July, they did so after a grueling tournament in Naples to finish as runners-up in States in the USSSA 10U B division. Back then; they knew they were going to have their work cut out for them when they moved up to the 12U division in the fall. For one thing, it was going to be an adjustment getting used to starting out as the smaller fish in the big pond. These Panthers, who are made up of girls born in 2005 and 2006, would now have to play against some teams featuring girls born in 2004 and even some from 2003. Not only that, but now the Panther girls would have to use a bigger ball and their pitchers would be moved five feet back from thirty-five feet to forty. To say that expectations were tempered, would be putting it mildly. But, here’s the thing about those Panther girls; nobody should ever take them lightly. After having had the majority of the team play together since they were six and seven years old, with important pieces added in along the way, the Panther coaches have seen time and again how these girls show heart and fight all the time. tournament in 13U at the November Knockout in Weston, the coaches were amazed at how their players fought against some tough competition. After holding their own on Saturday, but taking a couple of tough losses, the Panthers were moved into the Red Flight Bracket on Sunday. That’s where they showed once again what they were made of. Every single girl, one through twelve, came out with plenty of flight and battled through three tough games to be able to win the whole thing in their bracket. Their smiling faces, when they received their trophies, were matched in intensity only in the level of pride their coaches had in them. “Our emphasis is on pitching and defense,” Coach Guerra said. “And it always has been. That’s how they were so successful in the past.” He added, “It also helps that we’ve had the same coaches together for so long, so each coach knows what their role with the team is and we all trust each other. Hopefully, it’s something we can keep going for a long time to come.” From what we’ve seen so far, there’s no reason to doubt that.

Stoneman Douglas Deca Hosts 3rd Annual “Shark Tank” Challenge A

s part of Stoneman Douglas DECA’s chapter project, “Finance Your Future,” there was a “Shark Tank” event held at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s auditorium on November 16th between 5:00pm – 7:30pm. In this simulation, DECA students “pitched” their products to a panel of judges—the “Sharks.” They reviewed their ideas and provided feedback on their presentations as they played the roles of loan officers and venture capitalists. All community members and media representatives were encouraged to attend this spectacular event. After each presentation, the “Sharks” would question students about their “companies” to further clarify their product or service in order to give a sufficient score. Towards the end of the program, those who placed were announced and awarded with framed certificates and gift cards. Receiving third place was the company named Apollo Resources, represented by DECA senior students, Emily Weingarten, Michael Weissman, and Robbie Tromberg. Their business sold leasing programs for solar panels to ensure affordability, as well as efficiency. They focused on improving the environment while lowering energy bills, which they made sure to emphasize, was a “win-win” situation. The “Sharks” were particularly impressed with their forecasted financials for the upcoming five years, which consisted of detailed explanations of their business’ projected growth and of their margins of profit. Zero Degree, developed by DECA sophomore students, Carson Abt and Alyssa Fletcher, earned second place by impressing the judges with an incredibly unique idea. They sold items, such as hats, wristbands, and headbands that came with a built in cold pack to prevent overheating for athletes or individuals who often participate in physical activities. The “Sharks” were especially excited about the reusability aspect of the product, which could be achieved by simply placing it into the refrigerator to “re-cool.” Florence Yared, creator of fyiHEALTH, was announced the first place winner of “Shark Tank” this year. Her business would provide a medical database that stored medical, personal, and insurance information about each of their patients. The “Sharks” particularly liked Yared’s identified target market, which was private insurance companies, since it set her company apart from her competition. They

were also particularly impressed with her security protocol, which consisted of biometric key, to access the information, which ensures security for her consumers. The “Finance Your Future” chapter project is competing in DECA’s Financial Literacy competition category this March in Orlando, Florida. The project’s goal is to assist the community in learning essential economic and marketing skills needed to prosper in a global economy, as well as being more financially aware of oneself in order to become successful in the future. “Finance Your Future” will be hosting several future events in addition to “Shark Tank” to promote financial, marketing, and communication skills. They also plan to teach students the importance of understanding the economic aspect of running a company by allowing them the opportunity to create their own unique business idea in this highly anticipated event. “Finance Your Future” has also extended their promotions onto their social media account, and they can be located on Instagram, @msdfinanceyourfuture. DECA is a career and technical student organization composed of more than 200,000 students who are interested in careers in marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality or management. DECA enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing cocurricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition. DECA student members leverage their DECA experience to become academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders. Giving back is always important, especially during the

holidays. Angelina and Gianna Brier are two girls from Parkland that have supported Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child by organizing and planning events to raise money to fill shoe boxes for children to receive during the Christmas holiday. This year, they filled 204 shoeboxes with essential items and small toys for children that are less fortunate than they are. Two years ago, Angelina and Gianna learned about the charity through their church, Church by the Glades, during one of the Serve the City events. Since then, the Brier Family took a tour of the Operation Christmas Child Headquarters in Boone, NC where they often vacation with family. Angelina, is a 9th grade student at Marjory Stoneman

Douglas High School and Gianna is a 7th grader at Westglades Middle School. Both girls joined together with their friends to volunteer at Publix and Yogurtlogy in Coral Springs to raise money for postage. Each box cost $7 in postage and all other donations went toward buying items to fill the boxes. On November 18th friends and family joined together to pack all 204 boxes for children to receive for Christmas. Gianna said, “Angelina and I are blessed with so much and we enjoy giving back to children that do not have all that we do.” The Brier girls are lucky to get many Christmas gifts, however, for these children it could be the only gift they receive. They want each child to not only know that God loves them, but that someone across the globe cares about them too.
