Out and Kids Day off programs, Fishing Derby, Drive in Movies and much more! In Coral Springs there will be the Annual Fourth of July fireworks display, which is not to be missed. It’s that time of year again where we are all trying to decide what to do with the kids during those long summer days. That’s why we have an expansive camp directory for every different interest and every different type of camp, no matter what your child’s preference. You’ll find arts and crafts, specialty sports camps, travel camps, traditional day camps and programs that focus on academics, just to name a few. There is enough to keep your children busy the entire summer or just during select weeks. Having trouble deciding on a camp? Be sure to check out our article on “Choosing the Right Camp for your Kiddos.” Get out and explore this summer by trying a new local adventure. Check out our feature on the new permanent Orienteering Course at Markham Park and be sure to read the article on hiking for your health with area locations you and your family can hike in a day.

THE FRIENDSHIP INITIATIVE Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and grow programs, which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. We are currently providing 3 unique programs:
ROCK DREAMS At Rock Dreams, children and young adults with special needs (whom we call Rock Stars) come to sing and dance in groups, moving between activity areas that include keyboards, guitars, percussion, and vocals. Each Rock Star is paired with his or her own student volunteer (whom we call a Roadie). The program is run in a fun and compassionate environment with the goal of each Rock Star enjoying the experience individually and within the group.
FIT FRIENDS Fit Friends is designed for children and young adults with special needs who want to increase stamina and body tone. The program’s focus is on whole-body fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. Each participant is matched with a trained student volunteer. The programs begin with a light dynamic warm up that includes stretching. Each child then engages in aerobic circuit training and strength circuit training for each session. Exercise routines within the circuits are varied for each of the sessions, which are offered once a week for 8 weeks
ART WORKS At Art Works, children and young adults with special needs express themselves using a variety of art forms and techniques. Each session allows participants to explore different media including clay, paint, pastels, markers, pencil, etc. Each Artist is paired with their own student volunteer. The program, run in coordination with Art Paper Scissors at their studio in Parkland, is a fun-filled hour set in a compassionate environment that encourages exploration and creativity while improving fine motor skills. Through this creative process, social interaction occurs organically between the artists and the student volunteers. For more information about these programs, please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at (954) 464-6078 and visit www.thefriendshipinitiative.org and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page.

oral Springs Charter’s cheer team had a big victory this past January, taking first place at the Florida High School Athletic State Championships at the University of South Florida. The team, led by coaches Rachal Garris and Emonii Word won big after countless hours practicing and competing at smaller events. “I was the most excited to see the girl’s hard work pay off for them,” said Garris, the program director and head coach. “Some of the cheerleaders have been in the program for 5 plus years, so it was really great to see them finally reach their goal.” The team, made up of 14 athletes from ages 14 to 18, is no stranger to competition, earning second place in both regional and state competitions last year. This season, the team earned first place at regionals and continued to diligently train for states to accomplish their goal of first place. “We really focused on technique and progression throughout the season so when it was time to compete, the skills were solid and ready to be showcased in our competition routine,” said Word, choreographer and head coach. The girls trained twice a week for two hours, along with extra practices before events to create strong routines that impressed judges
at each level of competition. The team’s precision and attention to detail made them stand out amongst other competing schools. “We strongly believe in perfecting skills before adding difficulty,” said Garris. “It creates a solid foundation and builds confidence within the team.” The team’s excellent results allowed them to finish their season for the first time at nationals, making this season their most successful to date. Senior members and captains of the team, like Madison Baliber, especially felt a sense of accomplishment after spending years improving their skills. “It has been an amazing journey seeing the team grow and change throughout the years,” said Baliber. “I’m proud to have been able to be a part of it and lead our team through our most successful season.” The team is looking forward to setting new goals for next year’s season, but is currently enjoying their recent victory at states, an accomplishment that will go down in the school’s history. “It was a goal that we had for 3 years and finally accomplishing it feels like the hard work was worth it,” said Word. “The feeling that I felt when the girls faces lit up knowing we did it will always be one of my happiest memories.”

ral health is a vital component of healthy daily living, but for some children with autism, oral habits can be a challenge. With patience, perseverance, and determination, many of these challenges can be overcome and the results will be well worth the effort and have a rewarding, positive impact on the oral health and quality of life of your child. It is noted in the dental literature that children with autism may experience more dental problems due to sensitivities around the mouth, diet, difficulty with brushing, and difficulty accessing dental care. Furthermore, many are seldom able to verbalize complaints about any dental problems they may be experiencing. There is no evidence, however, to suggest that individuals with autism have higher rates of dental decay compared to the general population. It is for these reasons that establishing regular dental exams, both at home and in a dental office are essential to ensure good health. The first step in establishing an effective oral hygiene routine at home is to assess your child’s abilities and willingness to brush his/her teeth, floss, use a daily rinse, etc. If your child is reluctant and does not allow you to perform these basic oral hygiene routines, do not despair. Go slowly at first and use a technique that I personally love and recommend to all my patients….Tell, Show, Do (or T-S-D). As an example, tell your child that you will be using a toothbrush and explain the purpose for using it in an age-appropriate manner, e.g. for a pre-school age child you may mention that the toothbrush cleans away “sugar bugs” from the teeth and that it keeps her teeth strong and healthy. The next step is to show her the actual toothbrush and include some visual aids in the conversation, e.g. a picture book or a video showing a child brushing her teeth. This step is critical since it introduces the child to the object being discussed, in our example the toothbrush, and provides “modeling” for the child so she can relate with the child in the book or video also brushing his/her teeth. The final step is to slowly introduce the toothbrush into your child’s mouth and gently brush the teeth in small circles to remove any food debris and plaque. Throughout the steps in the T-S-D process, provide frequent praise for acceptable behavior. Remember, the key to success in establishing a proper oral health routine is repetition and more importantly, patience. It is by establishing an effective oral hygiene routine that we may prevent dental caries. Baby teeth serve an important purpose in the development of your child. They are important for sleep, nutrition, speech, and self-esteem. In addition, dental decay has been associated with children missing days
from school, failure to thrive, visits to the emergency room, and other non-desirable (yet avoidable) outcomes. It is important to remember that tooth decay is a completely preventable disease! Below I have shared some tips in establishing an effective oral hygiene routine with your child: • Make toothbrushing a routine, and if you are using picture schedules, add a picture of toothbrushing as part of your morning and bedtime routine. • If your child is sensitive to bright lights, noises, or smells remember to choose a place that is void of these triggers, and minimize distractions. Consistency works best so try to use the same location, timing, and positioning. • For younger children, i.e. 2-6 year age range, use a pea-size amount of fluoridated “kids” toothpaste. For children older than 6 years of age, a conventional fluoridated toothpaste may be used. Try using “bland” types of toothpaste without flavoring or those containing baking soda since children transitioning to “adult” toothpaste may object to the “spiciness” of the new paste. • Start slowly by introducing your child to the toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. Gently place the brush on your child’s teeth for a few seconds. If your child does not object, continue by brushing the teeth; start with either the top or bottom teeth, work your way around the arch and brush the backsides and chewing surfaces of the same teeth. When done with top or bottom jaw continue to the next and repeat. Remember to praise along the way! Once you have completed brushing your child’s teeth, rinse her mouth with water. If she is not willing to rinse, you may wipe the toothpaste with a clean towel or gauze. If behavior permits, introduce the floss. I personally recommend using flossers which are a more practical variant of conventional floss. Introduce the flosser between the teeth that are in contact. Gently press the flosser until a “click” is heard to ensure that the contact area is properly cleaned. It is important to remove accumulated plaque and food debris between the teeth since many bacteria are harbored in these hard to reach areas and are a common location for cavities. • Remember, the trick is to start slow and incrementally add steps to your toothbrushing regimen. Do not try to introduce everything at once to your child since this may overwhelm her. For example, let them acclimate first to the flavor and texture of the toothpaste, then to the sensation of the toothbrush against her teeth, and finally introduce the floss and/or any mouthrinse. • Use the Tell-Show-Do approach.

Mindfulness for Children By Dr. Pamela Baker & Dr. David Yudell
“In today’s rush, we all think too much — seek too much — want too much — and forget about the joy of just being”- Eckhart Tolle. “Happiness, not in another place but this place, not in another hour, but this hour.”- Walt Whitman
O
ur children live in a world where they are overwhelmed by the stressors of commitment, expectation, and obligation. Sometimes, a moment of peace in the present seems like an almost unattainable feat. Immersed in the investment of relationships, education, family, and extracurricular activities, (plus habitually being tied to technology) children remain disconnected from the reality of the moment. To be present, to be still, to be open, and to see, is what the theory of mindfulness strives to teach. Mindfulness meditation is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present and being open to the prospect of observation without judgment. This therapeutic intervention, a method celebrated in the study of positive psychology, has significant research in the field supporting the benefits it purports to have on the hearts, minds, and overall wellbeing of children. Specifically, mindfulness is shown to develop and strengthen a child’s focus and concentration, emotion and mood regulation, empathy and acceptance, and communication skills. In order to reap the full benefits of mindfulness meditation, like any skill, the concept must be fully grasped and frequently practiced. The following steps might prove helpful for this goal to be successful:
Step 1: Educate yourself on the benefits of mindfulness and how it might have a positive impact on you, as well as your child, and any family or loved one. Behavior that is modeled effectively is more likely to be followed. Step 2: Make a plan. Gradually begin to incorporate mindfulness meditation in your child’s routine. Start small, committing to teach one skill per week and practicing it with your child for 5 minutes, 2-3 times per week. Step 3: Start with a simple mindfulness exercise, such as Belly Breathing or Ring-a-Bell exercise. Ask your child to lay on his/her back in a comfortable position with a comfort object placed gently on his/her tummy. Encourage your child to draw his/her attention to the rise and fall of the object as they slowly inhale and exhale using their diaphragm. Step 4: Ring a bell and ask your child to listen carefully. Once the sound of the bell has faded, set a timer for 1 minute and encourage the child to identify all other sounds that came in to his/her awareness. Make it fun and encourage your child! Never turn to mindfulness as a method of punishment and avoid negative critique of attempts to learn and practice the skills. We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. SCHOOLS our music teacher, had students in chorus perform that evening in the program, Summer Camp, The Musical. It was a magical night and we are proud to say the fine arts are alive a well at our school! Other highlights from the spring included some of our students’ artworks being featured at Young At Art. Their Loom Creature Weavings were beautiful and displayed proudly. Also, Mr. Mankes’ Robotic Wolves attended a SECME Tournament and placed in their Mouse Trap Car competition. Go Wolves! Our Kindergarten Roundup is scheduled for May 15th at 8:30am in the cafeteria. Come learn about the exciting things that will be happening next year and experience a day in the life of a Kindergartner at Ramblewood. Our annual Career Day is planned for May 19th and is always a big hit with our students and staff. We are so fortunate to have parents, relatives, and community members that are willing to give their time to share the many talents and skills they possess in their careers with our students. Have a fantastic summer and we will see everyone back in on August 21, 2017!
Imagine Broward Takes Steps to End MS Forever and Makes a Huge Impact!
or two years now, getting behind a good cause and making a difference is a school and community wide effort for the families at Imagine Broward. During MS awareness month the children learn what MS is, why we need to raise funds and that no matter the age, they can make a difference. Students, teachers, staff, family and friends ended the month with a 5K MS Walk they created benefiting the South Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). Monica Eastep, an Imagine School at Broward parent, began the event at the school last year. Since being diagnosed in 2004, she knows first-hand about the impact of living with MS and works hard to raise awareness in the community and with the Imagine children each year through Walk MS. EVERY HOUR in the United States someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable and often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Walk MS has become a rallying point of the MS movement creating a community of shared commitment determined to find a cure and end MS. “Last year I asked our school community to join Eastep’s Team Imagine and we successfully held our first school-wide Imagine Walk for MS. Our second walk took place Saturday, April 1st and it was a huge success! “What an amazing morning it was,” Eastep recalls. “Even bigger this year was the goal and with 300 parents, students, teachers, administrators, community members and friends
walking the streets of Coral Springs in our fantastic Team T-shirts, sponsored by Intratec and all of our amazing sponsors, we did just that!” “Our Community Sponsors grew this year too with 36! Each Sponsor has played a huge part in helping us with event costs and to reach our goal. I appreciate their support and generosity!” This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 for the South Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Through donations, Dress Down Day for $1 donation for a personalized MS foot to line the halls and selling Italian Ice Donated by Celelie’s Italian ice, Eastep’s Team Imagine has raised an impressive $9,200 so far! “ We need more help! Please join our team and make a pledge today or share our story. You never know who may be touched by this crazy disease. No donation is too small and all money raised goes towards our Team goal! Hoping to be the #1 Team in South Florida this year!” says Eastep. For more information about the Imagine MS Walk check Walk MS Eastep’s Team Imagine on Facebook or the Imagine Broward school website at www.imaginebroward.com/imaginewalkms2017. ime has flown by and it’s hard to believe we are finishing up once again. But there are always exciting events we look forward to at the end of every school year, especially this one. Many of our students in grades 3–5 were involved in extra hours of academics in our FSA Tutoring Camp. These students got a second dose of English/Language Arts instruction twice a week. Students not only strengthened their skills in this area, but they also learned good test taking strategies, which gave them confidence during testing time that followed Spring Break. Ramblewood Elementary’s Spanish Teacher, Senora Sanchez-Sosner has done amazing work with her Multicultural Student Dancers who showed their stuff at World Fest on April 2nd. This is an annual event organized by the City of Coral Springs and both our primary and intermediate student groups did a phenomenal job. Our Art and Music Festival was another huge success this year. Every child had at least one work of art framed and on display for the community to see, as well as other art related activities organized by Mrs. Bachmann, Ramblewood’s art teacher. Mrs. Morishita,

FOREST GLEN MIDDLE SCHOOL EXCELS IN ATHLETICS
he Forest Glen Middle School boys’ basketball and flag football teams each finished their outstanding regular seasons as the Broward County Schools Division 1 Champions. The FGMS boys basketball team finished the regular season undefeated with a 10–0 record. While the FGMS boys flag football team ended with a 6–1 record. The Wildcats basketball team was hoping to carry their winning momentum into the playoffs for a championship run. While the Wildcats defeated Indian Ridge in the first round of play at home, the second round proved much tougher. FGMS hosted Dillard Middle School for what turned into a hard fought game. After being down by double digits most of the game, the Wildcats went on a run that closed the score to a two point difference. But in the end the Wildcats perfect season came to an end with a missed last second shot to tie the score and force overtime. Outstanding play came from Delvontae Bouie and Wilguans Val and an 11–1 overall record. The boys flag football team headed into the first round of the playoffs against Indian River. After a spectacular season the team fell short of their goal of a championship run, too. The Wildcats were led by longtime coach Theron Kendrick and aforementioned FGMS Athlete of the Year Delvontae Bouie and a 6–2 overall record. Head basketball coach Carlos Garcia and head flag football coach Theron Kendrick
led the Wildcats. As a formula for success, Coaches Garcia and Kendrick demanded complete focus from their players in practice and during the games. But more importantly, they stressed to their players that as student athletes and leaders of FGMS, academics required the same importance.

Aside from the obvious health benefits of a good hike, be it through a flat
52
forest or up a hilly mountain (while traveling outside of Florida, of course), new research shows that hiking can actually change your brain for the better. In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, boosting self-esteem and releasing endorphins, a recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that spending time in nature significantly decreases negative, obsessive thoughts. The study found that participants who walked for 90 minutes in a natural environment reported reduced neural activity in the subgnual prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain related to mental illness. As if this wasn’t reason enough to get outdoors and enjoy nature, psychologists have also discovered the following: Disconnecting from technology while reconnecting with nature can drastically improve creative problem solving. Participants in one study went backpacking through nature for nearly 4 days; during this time they were not allowed to use ANY technology. When asked to perform tasks, which required creative thinking and complex problem solving, researchers found that performance improved by 50% for those who took part in the tech-free outdoor hiking excursion. It is important to note that both technology and urban noise are incredibly distracting and constantly demand our attention. This prevents us from focusing and challenges even the simplest cognitive functions. A nice, quiet hike, free of technology, can soothe your mind, boost creative thinking and reduce mental fatigue. What writers block?! Hiking outdoors can improve ADHD in children. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is becoming more common among children. Children with ADHD have a difficult time with impulse control and staying focused. Research has found that exposing children with ADHD to outdoor activities significantly reduces these symptoms. Basically, nature exposure can benefit anyone who has a difficult time paying attention and/or exhibits impulsive behavior. Hiking in Nature is GREAT exercise and boosts brainpower. Exercise of any kind does wonders for our overall well-being and hiking is no exception. Depending on your size and the difficulty of the hike, you can burn between 400–700 calories per hour and it’s easier on the joints the running. It has also been proven that individuals who exercise outdoors are more likely to be consistent with their workout plan, making hiking the “natural” choice for those wishing to become more active on a regular basis. Hiking is one of the easiest and least expensive activities to get involved in. Always start out small in the beginning to test your abilities. Remember – any outdoor exercise is better than none. Work at your own pace and increase distance and degree of difficulty accordingly as you go. Make sure you have a good pair of durable hiking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle to keep hydrated. You can also use trekking poles as well. These will help you increase your speed and take some of the pressure off your knees. While South Florida may not have the most challenging and hilly terrains to discover, there are a plethora of trails and parks throughout south Florida for
you and your family to explore. We’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you and compiled a list of the best of the best in Broward County. Barrier Island Nature Trail – John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, Dania Beach At John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, the Barrier Island Nature Trail will take you away from the crowds at the beach and into a quiet patch of woods along a small strip of land on a barrier island just south of Fort Lauderdale. At an easy half-mile nature walk, it’s the perfect introduction for children to plants indigenous to the beach as well as barrier island habitats. It will also provide a much-needed break from exposure to the hot sun all day. Doris Davis Foreman Wilderness, Parkland This beautiful patch of tropical hammock is hidden amid the bustle of suburbia in Parkland. The half-mile loop, mostly boardwalk, guides hikers through a cypress strand brilliant in unusual palms and more species of ferns than you’ll see on most longer hikes, including sword ferns over eight feet tall. This is an easy walk for all ages and it’s an extremely beautiful hike. Fern Forest Nature Center, Coconut Creek As the name implies, an abundance of ferns await at Fern Forest Nature Center, an urban wilderness area covering 247 acres that surround the original floodplain of Cypress Creek before water management canals changed the area’s hydrology forever. The area is home to thirty-four species of ferns, including the primitive and endangered whisk fern, flourish in this deeply shaded forest. Founded in 1979, this preserve protects a Florida that has almost vanished along the coast. Tall Cypress Natural Area, Coral Springs Botanical variety abounds in the 66-acre Tall Cypress Natural Area. Along the boardwalks, you’ll wander through a cypress marsh that is a utopia of ferns, with a profusion of giant sword ferns, marsh ferns, giant leather ferns, and many others filling the undergrowth. Tropical trees grow on the matted soil; pigeon plum, paradise tree, satinleaf, and strangler figs. A calm half-mile trail with a number of benches on the way, this hike is ideal for all ages. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Former estate of Chicago attorney Hugh Taylor Birch, this tropical forest located just across the street from Fort Lauderdale Beach showcases gardens and an assortment of botanical rarities coupled with gardens gone wild. An enormous fig dominates the main picnic area and becomes a forest onto itself with a crown spread of 173 feet. There Coastal Hammock Trail is a 20-minute leisurely walk through a native maritime tropical hardwood ecosystem, some of the last designated within Broward County. The Mid Trail gives different views of the park by showcasing numerous plants brought here by Mr. Birch. A self-guided audio tour may be taken with your cell phone.

lthough orienteering has been established in Florida for the past 25 years, it has been limited to the Central Florida area. With a new permanent course at Markham Park, orienteering is now growing in popularity in South Florida. It is a great way for people, ages 8 to 80, to explore the outdoors and experience nature. All you need to get started is suitable footwear, comfortable clothing and a good compass. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers in Scandinavia, the sport combines racing with navigation and can be either competitive or recreational. As a timed race, participants use a specially created, highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain and visit control points in sequence. In order to prove they have visited a control, they use a punch hanging from the bag to mark their control card. Recreationally, courses also can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods, with difficulty levels from beginner to expert. The permanent courses at Markham Park are the brainchild, creation and work of Sebastian Michko, who is currently an ROTC student at Texas A&M University. He completed the permanent courses last year as part of an Eagle Scout project. Although prior orienteering events had been held at CB Smith Park, Markham Park and Oleta River State Park, he was the first to establish a permanent course in South Florida. At the time, he was a student at Ft. Lauderdale High School. He was also a JROTC orienteer and one of the best orienteers in Florida. The courses at Markham Park are used for two purposes. There are one-day events, which are primarily for high school JROTC competitions, but typically also open to public participation. Most of the orienteering at the park, however, occurs on a recreational basis. For a small fee, people can use the novice (1.5 miles), intermediate (2.1 miles) or advanced (2.7 miles) maps any day to complete the course of their choice. They
navigate to a series of checkpoints, which are marked by posts stuck in the ground and topped by an orange and white orienteering marker. The more advanced courses include longer distances and more complex navigation challenges, such as going off trails or choosing multiple routes between control points. The permanent course maps are available at the park office or online on the South Florida Orienteering website, www.sflorienteering.org/course-types. “Markham is a great park for orienteering,” said Gord Hunter, director of Suncoast Orienteering. “It has many trails, a variety of terrains and features. Despite the complex forest, you are never far from the road.” Mike Engestrom participated in orienteering in the early 1980’s in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. He now lives in Weston and has been involved in the sport for the last few years. He is a volunteer coordinator for South Florida Orienteering (SFLO) and a member of Suncoast Orienteering (SOAR), Florida Orienteering (FLO) and Orienteering USA (O-USA). “I’ve always liked land navigation, using a map and compass, from my time with the Boy Scouts and Army Reserve,” said Engestrom. “It is a great way to get exercise and experience time in nature and wooded environments. It gets folks, especially kids, away from computer monitors and game consoles to experience nature in a healthy environment that also promotes a useful technical skill.” There are many orienteering clubs around the United Sates, most of which are listed on the website, www.us.orienteering.org/clubs/ all#start-table. South Florida Orienteering currently focuses on Broward County, Miami-Dade County, with plans to expand to Palm Beach and other contiguous regional areas. As orienteering grows in South Florida, events have been planned at a variety of parks, including Oleta River State Park, C.B. Smith Park, Tree Tops Park and possibly Jonathan Dickinson Park.

SUMMER CAMP
SUMMER CAMP
L
et’s face it, choosing the right camp for our kids may feel like a daunting task. Knowing what to look for makes the process more enjoyable and results in happy campers all summer. 1. It’s About Your Child. Knowing your child’s interest is essential to ensuring the best summer for your family. A well-balanced camp will keep campers engaged. The camp that offers a specialization such as science, coding, art, dance, sports, robotics, etc. but also blends in other interactive activities makes for a more exciting day in the end. Your child’s personality is important. Is your child mainly an extrovert or an introvert? This will reveal whether your child will enjoy a larger camp vs. a smaller setting. Ask to see the schedule for the day, as it will show productive use of time. 2. Specialty Camp. It is true that today’s choices are enormously varied. There are camps for almost every interest and discipline known to us. There is a difference and you should know what to look for when choosing a specialty camp. True specialty camps will go beyond expectations to offer a special experience for their campers… something unique that they will not get elsewhere. The right specialty camp will have experts in their respective field working with your kids. Also, look for a curriculumbased camp, meaning there were experts in the area planning purposeful activities for kids and not off the cuff planning. You’re looking for a purposeful experience for your child and money well spent or in this case invested in your child.

3. Safety. Whether it’s how a camp handles allergies, drop off/pick up, or hiring and training of staff, you need to ask the right questions. Find a camp that has clear security measures in place. A good camp will be accessible and happy to share the camp’s policies. If you notice the camp cannot answer your security questions, then you might consider looking for a different camp. Well-enforced allergy restrictions are important as well. The right camp will make the provisions necessary ensuring the safety and well-being of all children. Staff is important; check out who will be working with your child. The right camp will have set hiring procedures, appropriate training, supervising, and vetting staff. Ask to speak to the camp’s director and find out about screening procedures, background checks, and qualifications. As I said before, the right camp will be happy to share staff qualifications. 4. Camp Duration. Many camps today offer weekly schedules as opposed to all summer long, and many have the option for day camps. Hours vary as well; it is important to plan especially for working parents as this might cause a change in routine. Being prepared is key to a smooth transition from the school routine to a stress free camp routine. 5. Camp Tuition & Discounts. Keep your family’s budget in mind. Take advantage of early registration discounts. The right camp will be reasonably priced and cover things such as materials and a few treats along the way. Ask what is included in the tuition… meals, materials, etc. You will be pleasantly surprised at the frequency to which camps offer excellent discounts for groups, city employees, teachers, military families, etc.
