SPORTS & ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY (954) 803-2140 Office
1118 SW 7th Street, Boca Raton, FL 33486 www.sportsandactivities.com
Welcome Back! I hope that everyone enjoyed a fun-filled summer and was able to spend quality time with family and friends and recharge before the start of the school year. This issue focuses on Back to School and Fall/Winter programs, sports, and special events, as well as just about everything you need to know to get out and about. Some of our very favorite activities and events are during the fall and we could not be more excited! Be sure to check out our detailed event calendar for all the happenings.
If you have not already signed your child up to participate in fall sports activities, now is the time. Please encourage your children to look through the magazine and choose one extracurricular activity or more that might interest them. This will help your child find a good balance between studying, activities and sports. These skills can help teach your child time management and leadership skills, as well as how to establish goals and develop a good work ethic.
Looking to volunteer? Become a Broward County Public Schools volunteer and make an impact on the lives of so many children. We encourage all parents to join their school’s PTA or PTO. These organizations are more important than ever and give parents the opportunity to remain involved with their children, know what is going on at their schools, and have your voice heard.
Many families have made this area home because they understand that Coral Springs and Parkland have some of the best schools in the state of Florida. Our schools offer not only innovative academic programs such as robotics, debate and business classes, but competitive arts and performing opportunities as well. Please read the school articles to see all the wonderful programs, competitions and community service projects our schools and students are involved in. We have some of the most dedicated teachers, staff and principals around and we are grateful for all of their hard work.
Our publication is all about our cities and the people who live in them. We want to hear about your children’s awards and achievements. We would love to receive pictures of their athletic and artistic endeavors. Send them to cspdirectory1@gmail.com.
My best to you,
Kim Kadel PublisherDear Parkland Residents,
While back-to-school mode is about supplies and schedules, it is also about taking a moment to set a positive tone for the months ahead. Making a point to start off the year with respect for parents, teachers, and administrators is also key to a successful school year. It is our duty to show them the respect and appreciation they deserve. By being attentive in class, completing assignments on time, and following school rules, we demonstrate that we are committed to our education and value the efforts of those who make up our school communities.
As students focus on academic and personal growth, they can also set meaningful goals, whether it be improving grades, joining a club or sports team, or volunteering in the community.
Here are a few quick tips that will help students to maintain a sense of purpose and reach their goals throughout the school year. I think these points can help benefit us all:
• Set goals.
• Establish good study habits early in the school year.
• Stay organized and focused.
• Take care of yourself physically and mentally.
• Get enough sleep.
• Eat a healthy diet.
• Commit to being a good friend.
I believe the last point—committing to being a good friend—is crucial. If we strive to be kind and caring to those around us—especially those struggling with personal or academic challenges—we can make a positive difference in the lives of others and foster a sense of community within our schools. Make the most of the few weeks ahead to approach the new school year with positivity, determination, and kindness, and make it a school year to remember. If you would like to share your thoughts or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland. org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
Parkland Mayor, Rich WalkerDear Coral Springs Citizens and Businesses,
Welcome back to school! I hope you had a great Summer! Our City has had a great summer as we had some great celebrations! Our July 4 event was spectacular and SO well attended! If you missed the incredible display of fireworks, please save the date next year! We also celebrated our City’s 60th Birthday with a few socials and each event was awesome! I want to thank all of the residents who attended and all of the City Staff that were involved in putting on these great events.
As you probably know, I am very proud to be your Mayor. One of my favorite activities is to host youth at City Hall and teach them about government. If you are interested, email Luwam Ghermay at Lghermay@coralsprings.gov. I also love visiting classes and talking about local government and making sure your voice is heard. If you would like me to visit your class or your child’s class, please make arrangements by calling Luwam at (954) 344-5906. I also host office hours one to three times a month to talk about any issue or idea you may have.
Our City has a lot of momentum as we are attracting new development, new businesses and new residents into our City. It’s a very exciting time for Coral Springs given the redevelopment of downtown, some great new restaurants in town and getting back to “normal,” with some of our great schools and Fall activities! I personally love coaching my grandson in the Coral Springs Your Soccer program! Separately, I am also working with other community leaders and student leaders on Project Leadership 47. It’s a great program that started in 2003 as a way to give middle and high school students a strong foundation for their future. Its free! For more information, please feel free to text or call me at (954) 494-9872.
You may also see the rise in demand for pickleball courts in Coral Springs. IT has been great to see the growth! I personally play two-three times a week! It has been a great way to meet with and connect with our awesome residents! Thank you Joy, Richard and Anna Bright for your desire to help pickleball grow in Coral Springs! If you are interested in learning about pickleball or any other events in coral Springs, please visit www.CoralSprings.gov/events. Lastly, I want to thank Kim Kadel for giving me this opportunity to connect with you, inform you and engage with you in this great publication. Families and children are the lifeblood of our City and our local schools are integral to the growth and well-being of our families. On that note, a special thanks to all of our teachers for your commitment to our children.
Warmly,
Your Friendly Mayor, Scott J. Brook Mayor of Coral SpringsAUGUST

I n an increasingly uncertain world, where economic landscapes can shift with little warning, it is crucial to become financially empowered, as this will create peace of mind.
While external factors may seem daunting, understanding and utilizing cognitive biases can potentially pave the way for BOTH women and men to navigate the challenges and emerge as financially empowered individuals. This article aims to shed light on how the typical investor can leverage cognitive biases, in their favor, to gain financial empowerment.
1. Anchoring Bias: Setting Strong Foundations: Anchoring bias refers to our tendency to rely heavily on the first piece of information we receive when making judgments or decisions. To harness this cognitive bias, we can lay a strong financial foundation by setting clear goals and financial benchmarks. By anchoring oneself to these goals, it is possible to build solid financial plans, budget effectively, and make informed investment decisions.
2. Availability Bias: Taking Advantage of Information Accessibility: The availability bias occurs when we overestimate the importance of information that is readily available to us. We can utilize this bias by seeking out relevant financial information and resources. With easy access to financial education programs, online resources, we can make astute financial decisions. By equipping ourselves with knowledge, we may confidently maneuver through the maze of uncertainty that surrounds them.
3. Confirmation Bias: Embrace Diverse Perspectives: Confirmation bias is our inclination to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs. To combat this bias, the investor should actively seek alternative viewpoints and embrace diverse perspectives. Engaging in conversations with individuals who possess different financial experiences and backgrounds can inspire innovative solutions and beliefs about money. By surrounding themselves with a supportive network, we can tap into collective wisdom and challenge conventional thinking.
4. Loss Aversion Bias: Turning Risk into Opportunity: Loss aversion bias refers to our tendency to weigh potential losses more heavily than potential gains. To harness this bias, we should adopt a growth mindset and embrace calculated risks. By recognizing that taking risks and learning from failures are essential components of financial empowerment, we will be able to seize opportunities that others might shy away from. Embracing investments, entrepreneurship, or career advancements can redefine losses as opportunities for growth and success.
5. Optimism Bias: Cultivating a Positive Financial Mindset: Optimism bias leads us to believe that we are less likely to experience negative events compared to others. We can utilize this bias by cultivating a positive financial mindset. By reframing failures as learning experiences, focusing on long-term financial goals, and celebrating small victories along the way, we can boost financial confidence. A resilient mindset not only allows individuals to persevere through tough times but also opens doors to new opportunities.
6. Herd Mentality Bias: Seeking Financial Independence: The herd mentality bias refers to our natural inclination to follow the crowd and conform to prevailing trends. To avoid being swayed by this bias, we should prioritize financial independence and make decisions according to our own values and needs. By actively considering one’s unique circumstances, risks, and rewards, we can exercise greater control over our financial future and avoid being influenced by herd behavior.
Conclusion: In our increasingly uncertain and often confusing world, the investor can and SHOULD we can empower themself financially by understanding and utilizing cognitive biases to their advantage. By harnessing these biases, such as anchoring, availability, confirmation, loss aversion, optimism, and herd mentality, we can navigate the financial landscape more effectively. By setting strong foundations, broadening perspectives, embracing calculated risks, cultivating positive mindsets, and prioritizing independence, we will thrive amidst uncertainty and emerge as financially empowered individuals.
Let us embrace these cognitive biases as tools to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and pave the way for a more financially secure future.
In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. Now that it’s summertime, kids are spending more time on their phones. In my fifteen years working in the Special Victims Unit, I have witnessed first-hand the potential dangers lurking in the online world, especially those targeting children. Parents should monitor social media and talk to their kids about online safety. By following these few simple guidelines, you can ensure a safer and enjoyable online experience for your family.
1. Control Privacy Settings: Just like you lock the doors to your home, it’s essential to safeguard your kids’ online presence. Familiarize yourself with the privacy settings on their social media platforms and customize them to suit your comfort level. Limit the visibility of their personal information and tell them to be cautious about accepting friend requests from strangers.
2. Prevent Oversharing: It’s tempting to share exciting moments and experiences on social media, but oversharing can inadvertently expose your family to risks. Kids should never post personal information like their address, phone number, school, or vacation plans. Remember, once something is online, it’s challenging to control who can access it.
3. Think Before You Click: In the vast ocean of the internet, not everything is as it seems. Kids should exercise caution when clicking on links, downloading files, or responding to messages from unknown sources. Cybercriminals often use enticing tactics to trick children. Be vigilant and tell your children to ask you for permission before they take any action.
4. Talk to Your Kids Often: Children are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of social media. Engage in open conversations about online safety and teach them about the potential risks involved. Encourage them to think critically, question suspicious requests or messages, and report any uncomfortable encounters to you or another trusted adult. Set boundaries and monitor their online activities, ensuring they understand the importance of responsible internet use.
5. Respect Others and Report Inappropriate Content: Social media platforms should be a space for positive interaction and connection. Teach your kids the importance of treating others with respect. They should avoid engaging in online arguments or harassment and report any instances of cyberbullying or inappropriate content to you or a trusted adult.
Prioritize online safety, be mindful of your digital footprint, and educate your family about responsible internet use. Together, we can make the online world a safer place for everyone.

TIPS TO START THE SCHOOL YEAR
By Dr. David YudellAs summer comes to an end, it is time to shift gears and prepare for the new school year. Going back to school can be an exciting and overwhelming time for children and parents. With the right mindset and preparation, it can be a smooth and successful transition.
1. Establish a Routine: Gradually reintroduce a structured routine a few weeks before school starts. Set regular bedtimes and wake-up times to help adjust to the school schedule. Having a consistent routine can improve focus, productivity, and overall well-being.
2. Organize Supplies: Take inventory and make a list of what needs to be purchased. Involve your child in the process, allowing them to choose their own backpack, notebooks, and other essentials. Organizing in advance will alleviate stress and ensure a smooth beginning.
3. Set Goals: Encourage your child to set academic and personal goals for the upcoming school year. Whether it’s improving grades, participating in extracurricular activities, or developing new skills, setting goals provides motivation and a sense of purpose. Break down their goals into smaller, achievable steps.
4. Create a Study Space & Establish Homework Habits: Designate a quiet and well-lit area in your home as a dedicated study space. Ensure it is free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies like pens, paper, and a dictionary. Having a designated study space helps children focus and develop good study habits such as a specific time of day, inclusion of breaks
and reasonable expectations for support.
5. Encourage Reading: Foster a love for reading (improves vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and critical thinking) by providing a variety of books that align with your child’s interests. Set aside time for independent reading and engage in discussions about the books they are reading.
6. Communicate with Teachers: Establish open lines of communication with your child’s teachers. Attend parent-teacher conferences, introduce yourself early in the school year, and stay informed about progress. This will allow for collaboration and ensures that your child’s educational needs are being met.
7. Encourage Healthy Habits: Encourage regular exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep. Physical activity helps improve concentration and reduces stress, while a balanced diet provides the necessary fuel for learning. Sufficient sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall well-being.
9. Celebrate Achievements: Finally, celebrate your child’s achievements, big or small. Recognize their hard work, progress, and accomplishments throughout the school year. Positive reinforcement boosts self-esteem and motivates children to continue striving for success.
Remember that education is a journey. By implementing these educational tips and strategies, you can help your child start the school year on the right foot and set them up for a successful and fulfilling academic experience.

At the conclusion of the school’s first summer conservatory, parents and students alike commented that they wished the program would be extended throughout the summer and year-long. Well, Sagemont Prep has listened to the community, and this September, the preparatory school will open its year-long conservatory program to the community! In their upcoming launch of the daily conservatory, budding and experienced artists alike can engage in and explore offerings that include Piano Lab, Fine Arts, Sculpture, Photography, Theatre Production, Jewelry Construction, Ballroom Dance, Music for Little Mozarts, Violin, Guitar and Ceramics. The Conservatory of the Arts at Sagemont Prep will also offer private lessons in the arts.
Sagemont Prep Summer Conservatory families were blown away by the skill level and teaching of the faculty.
•“My child was able to build confidence and let barriers down to grow.”
•“We could not pick a favorite part because the whole experience was fabulous! The teachers went above and beyond in each of the arts. The summer conservatory was an incredible experience, from art to music, to theater, and to the level of instruction was incredible.”
•“The summer conservatory camp at Sagemont Prep is incredible. The instructors are amazing. Our daughter grew in confidence and as an artist, musician, and performer. It was a great way to experience many things on a personal level, and yet it was very fun as well.”
Join Sagemont Prep in September for the opening of the year-long conservatory that will serve the community. Sagemont Prep’s 2023 program will run from September 5th-November 17th. Classes will be offered at both of the school’s campuses in Weston.

READING PROGRAMS
PARKLAND LIBRARY READING BUDDIES (K–5TH GRADE)
Sessions held on Mondays from 3:30PM to 4:30PM. Would your child benefit from a Reading Buddy? When younger students read with older students, literacy skills are developed in an enjoyable manner. The Parkland Juniorettes are high school girls dedicated to making a difference. This group has partnered with the Parkland Library to help younger students with reading. Building partnerships between our high-achieving high school students and elementaryage children is an excellent way to reinforce lifelong reading success. (Note: On the Mondays that school is closed Reading Buddies will not meet.) Registration is not required; just meet at the desk in the center of the library. Visit www.cityofparkland.org/library or call (954) 757-4207.
PARKLAND LIBRARY STORYTIME CLASSES
Please visit www.cityofparkland.org/library for story time class schedules and registration dates. Your Parkland Library card is required in order to register. Registration is limited to one class per child.

• TODDLER TALES STORYTIME: (24 months–3 ½ yrs, child must be accompanied by an adult). This early literacy class establishes the relationship between letters and sounds, sign identification, and provides early phonemic awareness. This is accomplished through stories, music, rhymes, and games.
• PRESCHOOL STORYTIME: (3–5-years old unaccompanied by adult). In this class, preschool age children will enhance phonemics, direction, verbal and written cues, motor skills and literacy links through stories, songs, finger plays, flannel boards and crafts. New themes are presented each week.
• ROOKIE READERS: (Kindergarten–2nd Grade). This class combines stories, poems and crafts to make a fun library experience. It encourages entertaining, independent reading.
