Dear Readers,
Welcome to the summer edition of the Coral Springs/Parkland Sports & Activities Directory. In this issue you will find many wonderful events coming up this summer; including the annual Fourth of July celebration in Coral Springs whose fireworks display is not to be missed and the concert of the summer in Parkland featuring the amazing country star Craig Campbell on Friday, May 27th at the Pinetrails Park Ampetheatre. Also, the 20th annual Alzheimer’s Ball will be held on May 13th to honor a wonderful group of individuals. Please support this amazing cause. Also, don’t miss the last two Sundays of the Coral Springs Farmers Market at the Art Walk on May, 8th & 22nd, and be sure to bring the kids to the monthly Family Fun Day Event at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, held throughout the summer. With the school year coming to a close, we could not be more proud of the accolades and special achievement our schools have had over the course of this past school year. The teachers and parents are amazing and provide so many wonderful programs throughout the year to raise money for our schools and supply everything that our kids need and more. This issue also includes a feature on Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce job shadow program, where business owners are paired with students from the five area high schools for the day. This is extremely special because it links the business community with local young entrepreneurial students. Special congratulations to JP Taravella high school business students as they represent Florida at the National Virtual Enterprise Business Plan Competition. And another special congratulation goes to the Broward County Teacher of the Year, Brandon Kyle Jeter of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School! The time is now to decide what the kids will be doing this summer, which is why we have an extensive summer camp directory. There are arts & crafts, sports activities and travel summer camps for all ages. No matter what your child’s interests are, there is a camp in our fantastic cities for them. We also include an extensive list of programs for special needs children. Camp was always such a great experience for me as a child. Children can enjoy the activities they love, have an awesome time and make friendships for a lifetime. Also in this issue you will find a list of summer leagues and preview of our fall leagues. Have you heard of Box lacrosse? The league was formed out of the huge demand for youth lacrosse in South Florida and the need to increase the skills of the existing youth lacrosse player. The league is an “all fun” format, which means a focus on playing and having fun. Look inside to see their summer league information and when the signups are for all of your favorite fall sports. To finish on a personal note; I hope you enjoy the long summer days with your loved ones, enjoy staycations, vacations, barbecues and beach days! Until next time,
Kim Kadel

ongratulations to JP Taravella High School Business Ownership students who won first place in the first-ever Florida Virtual Enterprise Business Plan Competition. Under the direction of their teacher, Laurie Acosta, the team of six students represented their 25-person “firm,” called Focal Point, Inc., and presented a plan they wrote together for an online visual directory that operates in the VEI marketplace. The students, all seniors, include CEO, Aaron Mitchell, VP of Human Resources, Chloe Roque, VP of Sales, Lauren Echols, VP of Communications, Rachelle Serrano, Communications Manager, Michael Hazan and Chief Financial Officer, Kaylon Schmidt. The competition, held at Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business & Entrepreneurship, included student-run VE firms from Tampa (two firms), Hialeah-Miami Lakes, Piper High School in Sunrise and Taravella in Coral Springs. Taravella and Piper launched their VEI programs this fall and are the first two high schools in Broward to do so. They join a
network of more than 500 high schools offering this honors-level program throughout the United States and nearly 5,000 worldwide. Virtual Enterprises International is an in-school, live, global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of 21stcentury skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem-solving, communication, personal finance and technology. Student firms are connected to one another through an online portal, where they learn how to complete departmental and individual tasks, manage personal and company finances, communicate with other firms, and market their products or services. “What makes this program so special is that students get to learn about running a business by doing it,” said Acosta. “I love watching them work together to accomplish the day-to-day tasks involved in running a company and dealing with the ups and downs that every business faces. It’s been an incredible learning experience for them and for me.”

At Naidu Orthodontics, we believe that staying up-to-date on technological
advancements enables us to provide the most efficient and effective orthodontic treatment for our patients. Beyond that, it sets our practice apart as a leader in local orthodontics, continuously striving to provide the best orthodontic treatment possible. That’s why we are proud to use the iTero® digital impression system - A first in Broward. This innovative approach to dental imaging allows us to meet your orthodontic needs with greater efficiency and patient comfort. Our digital impression system replaces the uncomfortable, unpleasant-tasting, messy and sometimes inaccurate traditional putty impressions. No bulky trays or sticky putty needed! Using a digital scanner, we will take three-dimensional (3-D) digital images, or impressions, of your teeth and bite. These impressions will help us formulate a personalized treatment plan that meets your specific orthodontic needs and desires. We can also use them to visually show you your treatment and help us keep you up-to-date on your treatment progress. The computer simulation will show how your teeth will move and forecast the final result. Now our patients can see what their smile will look like from the start! After your specific treatment plan has been chosen, the digital impressions allow us to create customized bracket trays that we use to place your brackets onto your teeth, all at one time, with increased efficiency and overall effectiveness.
Benefits of iTero® digital impressions over traditional putty impressions include: COMFORTABLE • No gooey mess associated with impression materials • Breathe and swallow naturally during the digital 3D scan • No unpleasant taste SAFE • Does not expose you to radiation • Uses a laser to generate images ACCURATE • Precise fit of Invisalign aligners • Eliminates the need to retake impressions multiple times FAST • View 3D scans onscreen with Dr. Naidu immediately • Results in faster delivery times of your personalized Invisalign treatment plan This revolutionary technology allows us to start with a perfect model, which will ensure perfect results in the end. Naidu Orthodontics has four convenient locations: Pembroke Pines, Doral, and Coral Springs. Call (954) 438-1965 today for your complementary consultation.

Redefining Spoiled By Dr. David Yudell and Dr. Stacey McCaffrey
W
e have all used the word. “She’s acting that way because she’s spoiled.” “Of course he did that. He’s spoiled and lazy” (lazy is a topic for another day). But what are we really saying when we use the word spoiled? And how should that word be defined? Spoiled: Harm the character (of a child) by being too lenient or indulgent (Google). By that definition, when we call our child spoiled it is actually our own fault. Many of you may be saying that fact is obvious, but you may not think the same way in the heat of the moment. That moment comes when your child is being disrespectful by refusing to do what they are asked, or the moment may involve them coming up with hurtful (and loud) words that you did not think they knew or would ever say. I really like this definition because it puts the responsibility squarely on our own shoulders. As parents we should be the role models. We should be the decision makers. We should be the source of reason and rational thought. Often I hear negotiating, reasoning, and offers of rewards for complying with requests or changing behaviors. Please do not misunderstand me. Those are all correct methods to interact with your children. They simply should not be the only method to create behavior change.
When most people define spoiled, they talk about what and how many toys or items our children have. Walk into the house of the majority of children in our community and you will find that there are few items that they are lacking. There are many of you who limit the electronics, toys or devices that you give your children, but try to stop their grandparents, uncles, aunts etc. from giving to them and you will find yourself unsuccessful. Their peers and media are not helping either. Advertising and bragging is EVERYWHERE. The messages they are spreading, more is better and it is time to upgrade your device! Personally and professionally I am less concerned with the messages heard and items owned. I focus on the examples and limits that we set as parents. Throw away the statements “because I said so” and “when I was your age” or similar. Have a conversation instead; explain your rationale and then remain consistent. Share with them when you make mistakes (and most importantly, how you corrected them). Ultimately it will not be the items that our children have that make them spoiled, it will be our continued leniency and the values that are not consistently taught. I invite you to reach out to me with questions or with future article suggestions. Please email me at DrYudell@DrYudell.com.
FAMILY HEALTH a wide range of exercises meant to get you completely loose before we get to the fun part…the punching and kicking. There are six bag rounds, where the instructors will continually demonstrate different combinations of punches and kicks. While the rounds are taking place, the instructors come by to make sure you’re throwing the combinations correctly… from your stance and posture to the form of the punches and kicks. After the bag rounds are complete, we’ll have some partner drills where we work on coordination and strength, followed by a cool-down at the end. Each day provides a new class plan, so you’ll constantly be learning new moves. It isn’t abnormal for people to burn about 800 calories in just one 1-hour class! Really! But the hour flies by. You’ll be very tired, but it’s probably the most fun you’ll EVER have working out. Whether you want to lose weight, get toned, of just have fun…ILKB Coral Springs is for you! They’re very fitness-minded, too. When you come to classes they’ll show you the proper techniques and give you constant feedback to ensure you’re doing the moves correctly, you’re working the muscles you SHOULD be working, and you’re really getting the most out of your workout. As you get better, you’ll get faster, and that’s how your workout continues to intensify. Don’t get us wrong…you’re gonna sweat your you-knowwhat off! But you’ll actually HAVE FUN doing it. This is not a boot camp. Nobody is barking orders at you or forcing you to do things you can’t. When you get tired (and you will!) take a break or get some water. f a child eats healthy foods, it can stabilize their energy, sharpen their minds and even out their moods. It’s important to make sure your child eats healthy snacks as part of a nutritious diet. Encouraging your child to make the right choices can be a challenge, but the key is to make snacks tasty and readily available. Fruits and raw vegetables are ideal snacks for kids because they are both healthy and easy to eat. Sliced kiwi, berries, apples, bananas and grapes make easy finger food and can be served on their own or with honey, caramel or peanut butter. You can also sneak in fruits and veggies in other forms, such as applesauce, yogurt, frozen fruit bars and smoothies. For vegetables, cut up carrot sticks, broccoli, cucumber, celery or bell peppers and serve with low-fat dip or salad dressing. Alternatively, set out cut veggies like a salad bar and let kids make their own salad. It’s also important to incorporate whole grains and low-fat dairy into your child’s diet. Pita pockets, whole-wheat English muffins, cereals, granola and cereal bars, baked chips and crackers are sensible choices, as are low-fat cheeses, frozen yogurt and pudding. Nuts are another good snack, used sparingly. Before you share nuts with other children, be sure none of the other children are allergic. Trail mix, which can include
a variety of nuts, seeds, raisins and other dried fruit, is a simple and fun treat. Beverages are just as important as the food that children consume. Skip the sugary sodas and serve your child a different option such as water, low-fat milk or 100-percent fruit juice. You can encourage your child to snack smart by making food fun. Serve snacks on fun plates, with colorful cups and napkins. Or cut sandwiches into fun shapes with cookie cutters. Another tip is to give kids choices, but make them all healthy. That way, everyone wins: Your child gets to choose their snack, and you get the satisfaction of knowing it’s nutritious. Being prepared is key: Make sure your refrigerator is stocked with sensible options. Lastly, remember that even if snacks are healthy, they should be eaten in moderation. Don’t serve snacks too close to mealtimes, and limit them to about 150 calories per serving. With a little advanced planning and creativity, you may soon find that preparing healthy snacks for your children is easier than you think and will provide your child with the healthy and energetic diet that they need. ounded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that all children with neurological disorders such as autism and cerebral palsy have access to top quality physical, occupational, speech and ABA therapy. We at Bright Steps Forward believe that all children have the ability to exceed expectations, achieve unexpected milestones and blossom before our eyes with the proper therapy and encouragement. In fact, we have seen the miracle of wonderment many times as children learn they DO have skills, that they SHOULD set goals, and that dreams CAN come true when their confidence is supported through early and intensive therapeutic interventions. Unfortunately, not all families have the ability or opportunity to take advantage of such services for their child, which is why Bright Steps Forward (BSF) was started. Founder Eileen de Oliveira witnessed her son, Lucas (who was born with cerebral palsy) learn to crawl and walk through early and intensive pediatric therapies and he exceeded all expectations. It was this breakthrough in Lucas’ development that inspired Eileen to create Bright Steps Forward so that others could benefit from the therapies that Lucas was privileged to receive. Today, children from all over the world are helped by assistance through Bright Steps
Forward and are now able to receive treatments and therapies that would otherwise be out of reach for them; families who either cannot afford insurance or afford the copay and deductibles because of other added expenses that go along with having a disabled child. Bright Steps Forward also operates a fully accredited school for children with disabilities for children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students attending Bright Steps Forward come from educational or home environments where the expectations were overwhelming and they were unsuccessful. Many of these students are low to average functioning children, adolescents and teenagers diagnosed with Autism, Aspergers, PDD, NVLD and other autistic spectrum disorders. Unlike larger public schools, the classrooms at BSF are smaller thus preventing a child from getting lost. BSF teachers nurture each student to discover their own natural strengths and achieve their maximum potential. BSF’s academic standards are aligned with the State of Florida and each child is given an equal opportunity to get the education that all children deserve. Step Up for Students and McKay Scholarships are accepted. Cerebral Palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary between people but may include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl or walk as early as other children their age. Difficulty with the ability to think or reason and seizures each occurs in about one third of people with CP. Autism s a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Every child is a miracle waiting to happen if they just get the chance. To learn more about Bright Steps Forward and how you can help, please go to www.brightstepsforward.org or call 954-703-4223.

oral Springs PreK-8th Grade School had a dynamic Quarter 3! We enjoyed many activities that included parents, students and faculty: celebrating our school mission of “Great Expectations” and our active “partnership” with parents and the community! Recognizing the importance of creating a school environment that supports social-emotional growth: character, anti-bullying, kindness and healthy lifestyle choices, our faculty and students engaged in many hands-on activities in the classroom and at home. Within the community Publix again hosted our Publix Math Night, a huge success!!! Faculty, parents and students came together for an evening of fun and learning that emphasized real world applications of Math concepts. Grades K - 7 participated in the “Hour of Code”, with older grade levels assisting younger grade levels. It was a great learning, bonding and “mentoring” experience and who doesn’t LOVE Minecraft? Another community partner,
W
hat a wonderful year we have had at Park Trails Elementary! The end of the school year brings the expected joy of finishing another year, but it also brings some sadness at leaving behind a year filled with great experiences, teachers, and friends. At Park Trails we take pride in educating our students each day while providing real-life experiences within our classrooms. The 2015 – 2016 school year has been full of exciting events such as the Fall Festival, Field Day, Man In My Life, Bookfair, Reading and Writing Night and Science Night just to name a few. We are looking forward to our upcoming Publix Math Night, Cultural Arts Night and our Summer Kickoff Bookfair!
All Pro-Dads, collaborates with us monthly to give Dad’s and their children an opportunity to share special time and hear supportive information as they enjoy breakfast together! Lastly, faculty was treated to an afternoon of “Survivor” that emphasized Team building, physical agility and other fun activities. What was the pay-off? The “winning” team were first in line for the much sought after, highly appreciated, NEW laptops! Everyone had fun and were very grateful to the “Smart Initiative” that provided us the means to keep our technology tools for teachers AND students fresh and cutting edge! All in all, we had an energetic and energizing Quarter 3 that engaged the entire CS PreK - 7 community ) Please enjoy the attached photos that highlight these events! We are also happy to announce that we will be having Summer Camp this year sponsored by the YMCA. Looking for a caring and nurturing program for the summer, stop by to see us.

Back to the basics.
Who doesn’t wish they could re-live a few days of their childhood? For me, it wouldn’t be the big extravagant experience like trips to Disney World or family vacations, but the simple joys we found in everyday life that I’d love to experience again. I still remember transforming one of my childhood friend’s backyard shed into our own “clubhouse”. The memory of taking something that was an everyday sight, and making it “ours” still brings a smile to my face today. Our children can experience the same joys with this super easy summer project, a DIY Collapsible Tent. Fun for all ages, this inexpensive project will give your young ones hours of enjoyment in both making their creation, then in playing with it and using their imagination to make it theirs. WHAT YOU NEED • Large Cardboard box (the bigger the better) • Scissors • Pencil • Sheet of paper • Box cutter • Paint (I used acrylic) • Paint brushes • Duct tape • Tape measure • Imagination
Step 1: Fold the tent straight through its midsection so that it opens up. Trim the bottoms of your legs so that the tent rests squarely on the ground. (I started off with scissors, but then switched to a box cutter.) Step 2: Cover your work area (an old tablecloth or sheet works well) Step 3: Design your tent on a sheet of paper before jumping in. This could take a while. After your little artist is ready, have him/her sketch their masterpiece onto the cardboard with a pencil. Step 4: Now it’s time for the fun painting to begin. I suggest using one color at a time. This gives time for your paint to dry without colors mixing together. Step 5: Continue the painting fun! You now have a lightweight tent that can easily open up for play and fold down to store around the house when not being used. This is a fun project to do with the kids that encourages creativity and is the perfect place for your children to hide, read, play, and dream.

Starting in August 2016, eligible Sophomores can select a (3) year Health Science course that will lead to Personal Trainer Certification in their Senior Year. The (3) Year Elective program starts in 10th grade with a foundational course in Health Science, (Health Science 1). The students will learn the structure and function of the human body and will be introduced to Personal Training fitness techniques. In their Junior year (Health Science 2), the students will learn about the Healthcare system, as well as learn problem-solving skills related to Sports Medicine. As Seniors, the students will learn to implement many exercise programs (Health & Wellness 3), and develop proficiency in fitness training techniques. They will also prepare to take the Certified Personal Trainer exam with an
learning with presenting their research and 3-dimentional projects at the Fourth Grade Florida Fair. This was an integration of writing, research, science, reading and social studies and an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of Florida. The fifth grade students put their science knowledge into practice during their annual Egg Drop Event. Each student also worked cooperatively creating a roller coaster for the fifth grade Roller Coaster competition. Our PTA was also busy organizing fabulous family activities. The Riverglades’ Ole Time Carnival on March 12th was an afternoon filled with food, rides, games and our incredible raffle of themed baskets from each classroom. Each year, former students return to Riverglades to volunteer and visit with teachers and staff. Another tradition is our Cultural Arts Evening. This year’s theme, “Give Green a Chance” focused on using recycled materials. It took place on May 11th. Artwork from each student was on display. Interactive kiosks involved our students in recycling art projects. Attendees were entertained by students’ musical or dance performances as well. As this year’s theme reminded us to “Discover the Super Hero in You”, our students have grown and stretched to be all they can be. Have a fun and safe summer.

he 2015-2016 school year has been filled with incredible learning and fun family events. Our Kindergarten classes practiced their reading to very special listeners during a read-a-thon with the dogs and their handlers from the Canine Assisted Therapy group. The readers loved their audience and the listeners loved the attention. First grade students shared what they have learned about plants and insects when they performed “Going Buggy” for their families and friends on April 29th. Reading, writing, listening and speaking standards were utilized. As a yearlong learning opportunity, our second grade students studied with Scientist, Scott Bryan, linking their science standards with the flora and fauna in the Doris Forman Preserve. Each time the students used their observation skills along with their science knowledge to extend their learning. The third grade classes’ visit to Young at Art provided a great opportunity to connect their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) lessons from their specials (formerly, art special) to the STEAM lesson at the museum. The focus was on solar usage and many connections were made. Through their yearlong study of Florida, our fourth graders culminated their

W e kicked off April with Multicultural Night where over 20
countries were represented through billboards, performances and food samplings. Students and families enjoyed learning about the different cultures around the world. Thank you to our wonderful PTO and volunteers for making this event spectacular! Our new student orientation will be Monday, May 9th at 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria. This event is for all new students that will be attending HHE for the 2016–2017 school year. Join your friends, neighbors, and new families for a Summer Dance hosted by out PTO on Friday, May 13th at the Heron Bay Marriott from 6:30 pm–8:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at www.heronheightsPTO.com for $10 per person. Children under 4 are FREE. We hope to see you there! For students at Heron Heights Elementary being green is starting to become a way of life. Every day students and staff at HHE work very hard to reduce, reuse and recycle. The students at HHE reuse recycled materials in their artwork, bring reusable water containers to school and every Friday afternoon they recycle. Students and staff check for any contamination and then students
place the recycling into larger recycling bins. School staff then place the paper and plastic into the HHE recycling dumpster, so it can be recycled and never see a landfill. Great job HHE! It’s been a fantastic school year filled with growing and learning! We want to wish all of our families a wonderful summer vacation! Make sure you stay current with HHE’s events by visiting our website at www.heronheightselementary.com
EXCITING TIMES AT PARKSIDE ELEMENTARY W
hat an exciting few months we have had here at Parkside. Right before Spring Break, all of our 2nd through 5th grade students spent the day with two former Miami Dolphin players getting Dol”fit” at their training camp. Students were able to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle by eating right and staying active. These students were able to participate in different football drills as well as learn a cheer from a Miami Dolphin cheerleader. Thanks to all of our many parents who served as volunteers for this event. Mrs. Phylis Mastrianni, our wonderful art teacher here, was named Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year for Visual Arts. This was such an honor as this is the second time in her 18 years of teaching that she has received this award. We are so proud of her. Mrs. Corrie Lohr and Mr. Dennis Montoya represented Parkside as the Teacher of the Year and Non-Instructional Employee of the year at the April 1st Caliber
Awards. Both of these individuals were voted on by their colleagues to receive the award and well deserving of this honor. Parkside is getting geared up for our School-Wide Exhibition, which will be held on May 11th at the school. We invite all parents and community members to join us for a showcase of the student work throughout the year as we “Mapped the BEST Path to Success.” The students have been researching about different regions of the United States and working on different projects to showcase what they have learned. The event will begin at 6:15 pm. Please don’t miss out on camp here at Parkside this summer as we will be hosting Camp Flash. Camp Flash will serve students entering K to 6th grade. They do a great job of keeping the kids active and having fun all summer. This year we will also be offering free breakfast and lunch to all campers. Pleas check out their website at www.campflash.com or call at 954-947-9499.

EXCITING YEAR AT RAMBLEWOOD ELEMENTARY! A
nother school year is quickly coming to an end. We are always amazed at how rapidly the year passes. So many great things happened this year. Our PTO continues to actively support Ramblewood in many ways; fundraisers, family nights, guest speakers, and enriching programs, just to name a few. Special THANKS to our PTO for raising funds and creating the Code Red Comfort Packs. These backpacks contain items for teachers to have in their classrooms in the event of a Code Red lockdown. Our Kindergarten Roundup was scheduled for May 18th at 8:30 am in the cafeteria. Students and parents came to learn about the exciting things that will be happening at Ramblewood next year. Our second year with the Dual Language Program was a success. We now have students in Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Next year our students will continue on to third grade in the Dual Language Program. The goal of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual by teaching them listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish. This year for the first time our Dual Language students performed ethic dances at the WorldFest in Coral Springs.
Our second year of our Multicultural Fair was a huge success this year! The ethnic infusion was a big hit with our families, since many come from diverse backgrounds and a multitude of nationalities. In addition to all the food, games and prizes, we had student performances inspired by the cultures of different countries from around the world. Kindergarten students performed “Los Pollitos,” First grade students performed a “Limbo,” Second grade students performed “This Land is Your Land,” and a “Merengue.” Fourth grade students performed an Irish dance and a dance from Israel, “Hava Nagila.” Career Day is a well-known tradition at our school and the students look forward to it every year. Classes rotate to different presentations, getting to experience four to five speakers sharing their occupations. This year we are excited and looking forward to our Career Day happening on May 20, 2016. We hope everyone has an exciting summer and we look forward to seeing you next school year! Ramblewood Elementary School is located at 8950 Shadow Wood Boulevard in Coral Springs. WHY DEBATE?
A
s an educator at Sawgrass Springs Middle School, I enjoy teaching Speech and Debate. The class allows students to become more proficient in speaking, researching, reading, and writing skills. The class is a vehicle for students to express their opinions assertively in a respectful manner on a relevant issue or topic. Debate involves an individual or a team of debaters working effectively to convince a judge to favor his or her side of a resolution, having researched each extensively, and learn to think critically about every argument that could be made on each side. Debate requires students to engage in a serious subject matter in a mature and professional environment. Students use a variety of means to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of course content. A foundation for effective argumentation and advocacy has been built by participating in mock debates and presenting one-research-based persuasive speech. Participating in debate gives students an improved perspective on the world around them. They have learned about important issues in politics, public policy, and philosophy. The students also gain a better appreciation for the diverse perspectives that make up the public sphere. Students learn to interrogate their assumptions, test their ideas, and present them for public scrutiny. This process of idea formation and revision teaches student to think rigorously, analyze issues effectively, and better communicate their ideas to their audiences.

IMAGINE SCHOOL AT BROWARD WRAPS UP ANOTHER GREAT YEAR! I
t’s hard to believe that summer is almost upon us! Exciting things have been going on at Imagine School at Broward over these last few months of school. Our first Imagine Walk for MS was an outstanding success. Over 200 students, teachers and friends joined our Eastep’s Team Imagine and came out to walk in Coral Springs to raise awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. Not only did we receive tremendous moral support, but we also blew the lid off of our $3,000 goal, raising $6,333.51 as of April 1st. This made Eastep’s Team Imagine the second ranked fundraising team in Fort Lauderdale for the South Florida MS Chapter 2016 MS Walk. Special thanks to Mrs. Monica Eastep for leading this effort and to the Coral Springs Police and Imagine Family Officers who donated their time to keep us safe as we walked. This year’s Family Night featured magician Gary Goodman, a delicious dinner and lots of great raffle prizes. Special thanks to the PTO, Nanette Dulong, event chairperson and the many volunteers who gave of their time and talents to put together such a fabulous evening. In art news, the Original Works fundraiser is in full stride under art teacher

Mr. Matthew Gayle’s direction. This fundraiser helps the art program with supplies each year. It allows students to produce artwork that can be printed on various products, including water bottles, t-shirts, puzzles and more. This year’s theme was, “What animals represent your personality?” Each family can view and purchase their artwork on the Original Works website. Imagine School at Broward’s National Junior Honor Society is hard at work collecting a variety of books to benefit children from Tomorrow’s Rainbow. This organization helps children who have lost a close family member. The school’s National Junior Honor Society is headed by Ms. Debra Darling. May means Field Day and friendly competition between classes. Lots of fun activities are planned for this much-anticipated Imagine School at Broward tradition. Each team sports its own unique t-shirt and shows lots of team spirit. Special thanks to Mr. Brett Mrakovich for putting together an awesome Field Day. P
BROWARD HEALTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TO EXPAND PEDIATRIC DIABETES CARE
arents with children who have diabetes know first-hand the emotional aspects of confronting diabetes and wanting to know where to turn for solutions for the specific complexities of diabetes. That’s why Broward Health Children’s Hospital (in Coral Springs and Fort Lauderdale) is taking a stand in helping parents and children navigate through the complexities of successfully managing this chronic disease. This summer, a Comprehensive Diabetes Center is set to open its doors. The program is being spearheaded by Broward Health Children’s Hospital pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Risa Wolf (based in Coral Springs) whose major focus is provide more comprehensive diabetes care and education for her patients and caregivers. Along with two pediatric endocrinology colleagues from the Broward Health Children’s Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Dr. Ernesto Blanco and Dr. Lital Reitblat, the program is expanding to serve residents from east to west Broward County. Now, both the Coral Springs and Ft. Lauderdale locations will offer larger facilities and a full care team – including pediatric endocrinologists, nutritionists, psychologists, certified diabetes educators, and social workers—all under one roof and in one visit versus having to jump from appointment to appointment with referrals. “We are excited and hopeful that offering a full range of services to our patients and their families will improve their quality of care, and ultimately, quality of life,” said Dr. Wolf. “The program will allow a patient to see an endocrinologist and simultaneously meet with a diabetes educator who will review their diabetes care and manage high or
low blood sugars. A nutritionist will help them optimize a healthy diet. At the same time, a psychologist will assist in helping children and parents with coping issues to manage a chronic disease; since the rate of diabetes and depression is very high.” This is certainly a need and a relief for families who have to deal with the high medical costs of managing diabetes. At the onset of being diagnosed kids and their parents are already making major adjustments to their daily lives—like pricking little fingers before every meal, injecting their bodies with insulin shots several times a day and monitoring food intake. This can be an overwhelming lifestyle change that has to be properly managed in an effort to maintain a normal blood sugar level, something most of us take for granted. Managing diabetes through education has already been at the forefront for Broward Health Children’s Hospital in Coral Springs for the past 20 years as it is home of South Florida’s only camp for children with diabetes. At Camp Coral Kids, children with diabetes can connect with other children who understand what they are going through in a fun, educational, and medically supervised environment. The idea is to help these families navigate seamlessly for a more successful outcome. This will impact the patients in a very positive way. For more information on the diabetes program, call 954-954-888-3666 or for Camp Cora Kids call 954-344-3344 or visit www.browardhealth.org/camp

n 1987 a small group of parents including Pete Gado and Don Ferguson were resolved to begin a soccer league of their own for the children in Parkland. In the beginning games and practices were held in a cow field on Trotters Lane on a property that belonged to the father of Dodie Lazowick, who was on the City Commission at the time. Every Friday he would cut the field so the kids could play on Saturdays. Of course they had to deal with all the cow-pies and the thousands of rocks. After a few weeks they realized they needed more volunteers to make the system work efficiently and got the word out to everyone. More than enough people stepped up. Parents and volunteers were diligent in removing all these obstacles before the games could begin. The volunteers lined the fields and purchased the goals and nets. Less than 150 children played the first year, as the population of the town was only about 1900 folks. Volunteers were always available to administer the club and parents were happy to give their time for all the children. Volunteers continued to paint the fields on

Saturday mornings and run a concession stand. There were always plenty of parents who wanted to help and that is still the case today. The volunteers have been the backbone of the club and they make everything possible. “We have grown from a small cow pasture that was cleared by a bush-hog at the first season to today’s 3 parks spread from the east side to the west side of town,” says Doug Cole, the league president for the last eight years. “We are proud to be the oldest organized sports group in Parkland and as we have watched generations grow. f you’ve been to a camp, you’re not surprised to hear about the many benefits of attending summer camp. Experiencing life at camp yourself as a child, you know the profound positive effects that still matter to you as an adult, and you also know that you want the same thing for your own kids. But if you didn’t go to camp as a child, you may not realize just how good the experience is for children. You may not know why so many parents are committed to sending their kids to camp. One of those reasons is because of the field trips. CAMP just is not CAMP unless you can travel offsite and experience new adventures. In all of my years of experience directing summer camps, the one thing that the campers and counselors talk about and always have fond memories of is their field trips away from the base camp site with their friends. There are so many exciting places for children to experience in South Florida and a Travel Camp is a way to experience all of those fun places with their friends. Field trips give children a welcome break from their routine. Field trips give campers educational, cultural and fun experiences away from the regular camp environment. Popular trips include zoos, nature
centers, science museums, aquariums, etc. Not only do field trips provide alternative educational opportunities for children, they can also benefit the community if they include some type of community service. Campers visiting different educational facilities learn in a more hands-on interactive manner than they do at the base camp site. Science museums, for example, have displays that children can touch to help them understand material better. Zoos, nature centers and botanical gardens show kids animal and plant life up close and often have areas where children can touch displays, such as petting zoos and interactive computer programs. Kids can look forward to and prepare for the field trip for several days or weeks. Learning in assorted ways can appeal to varied learning styles helping children succeed whether they are visual, auditory or kinetic learners. Field trips expand children’s learning through active hands-on experience with the rich resources of the local community. Field trips increase student knowledge and understanding of a subject and add realism and enrich their experience all with the camaraderie of their friends.

heerleading has evolved over the years. Today’s teams are comprised of some of the most talented athletes. Routines can be very challenging and include jumps, partner stunts, pyramids, tumbling and more. At Florida Triple Threat All-Stars, students learn to excel in all areas of cheerleading and dance. Coaches also make sure that the girls have fun, while learning life lessons and skills that will last a lifetime. Tryouts for the upcoming season will be held on May 14. “Florida Triple Threat All-Stars is a lot more than just competitive cheerleading,” said Amanda Davies, Coach, Trainer and Community Service Director. “We focus on the development of our students both inside and outside of the gym. In addition to developing their athleticism, we help them develop as a person and a teammate. We instill values and morals that our students can take with them long after their cheerleading careers, such as loyalty, discipline, hard work, confidence, and integrity.” Triple Threat’s program offers a wide range of levels from level 0 to level 5, which is the highest level in cheerleading. It offers tumbling classes and private lessons for every level. This season, there were seven competitive teams in levels 1, 2, 3, and 5 in the Mini, Youth, Junior, and Senior age divisions. All of the Triple Threat coaches are AACCA safety certified and USASF certified. Three of them are competition judges within the industry. “The coaches and staff are passionate about what they do,” said Davies. “This sport is their livelihood, so the success of the athletes, teams, and program as a whole is important to them.” Although competition season is only January through April, joining a competitive team requires a full year commitment from both the athletes and parents. Since cheerleading is a team sport, the whole team must be in attendance in order to structure routines and prepare for competitions. “We strongly believe that our success originates from the dedication and commitment of our athletes and parents,” said Davies. “Parents want their kids to be successful and so do we, but this requires dedication.
Students that succeed at Triple Threat are the ones willing to learn and take correction constructively, which is a huge part of being an athlete.” Teams travel to competitions on most weekends throughout the season and practice during the months prior. Most of the competitions are in Orlando; however, teams typically also attend three out-of-state competitions in places such as Dallas, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. There are also non-traveling teams for those who are not able to travel. Since Triple Threat opened seven years ago, some of its accolades have included: two-time Jamfest Super National Champions, 2012 NCA National Champions, Summit Bid Winner, three-time World’s Bid Winner and 2014 Cheerleading World’s Finalist. At NCA Nationals this season, Small Senior Level 3 placed 3rd and Small Junior Level 2 placed 4th. Teams will be competing at the 2016 Summit and Worlds Championships. Many alumni have also enjoyed successful cheerleading careers at colleges and universities, such as FAMU, University of Central Florida, Southeastern University, and the University of Louisville. Florida Triple Threat also has a competitive team for special needs athletes of all ages. The program relies on athletes and coaches who volunteer their time to practice once a week and assist the special needs athlete in competitions. The special needs program relies solely on donations and sponsors to fund competition fees, uniforms, bows, shoes and other necessary items. “Having a special needs team has really brought our athletes together for a bigger cause,” said Davies. Florida Triple Threat also offers birthday parties, Parkour, and high school cheerleading. High school cheerleading teams can rent gym space and coaches are available to help train the teams upon request. Coaches run the birthday parties, which include free time and games in the gym area. Parties are scheduled by appointment only. During Parkour classes, which are held on Friday nights from 7pm–9pm, instructors create exercises, build obstacles, and set up drills so the athletes can learn a variety of Parkour skills. For information, visit www.fla3threat.com or call (954) 514-7250.
