Dear Readers,
Happy Holidays to you and your family! It’s the winter months in South Florida that leave me feeling truly grateful for the utopia in which we live. While much of the country is getting ready to hunker down for a few months of freezing temperatures, layers upon layers of clothes, bitterly cold commutes and snow shoveling, here in South Florida we are preparing for the most beautiful time of the year! With the temperatures slightly lower, the humidity less oppressive and the freedom to still walk out the house in shorts and a T-shirt without freezing, it’s all the confirmation I need that I live in paradise. After all, where else can you still have a beach day in December? South Florida is a unique place to live all year round and the Holiday Season is no exception. It’s a great time to get out and about to explore our region and discover new adventures for the whole family. This edition of Sports and Activities is full of family-friendly events, ideas and activities to keep you fit and active over the winter months while keeping you looking your best for those family photos! But if you’re looking for a more creative pursuit, why not see what sparks your interest? If, like me, you have a new college student coming home for their first Winter Break, plan something special to mark the occasion; whether you are looking to participate in an art class, engage in an outdoor concert, take part in a Fun Run or attend a Family Fun Night, you’ll find everything you need and more than you expect in the directory! Certainly one of the most enjoyable and at the same time, stressful aspects of the Holidays is finding the right gift for friends and family; what do you give the man or woman who has everything? Why not set yourself apart this year and think outside the (gift wrapped) box? Not only will you find lots of great gift ideas, such as giving the gift of fitness at a Martial Arts or Health Studio, perhaps treat someone special to some dance or acting lessons. Tickets to a concert or sporting event make for a great gift for that special couple or even an entire family! The Holidays are a special time for families to get together, reflect on the year that has passed and give thanks for all that life has sent our way. Tis the season for giving and oftentimes, we find ourselves wanting to contribute to a charity or local organization. Take a look through our pages to discover so many charitable activities going on through the holiday season; get healthy and run off that Thanksgiving dinner while teaching the kids the meaning of the Holiday Spirit and value of giving back. As you prepare for all the festivities the Holiday Season brings, be sure to take plenty of time to be with the ones you love. It doesn’t have to be a special event; find a movie, read a book in a local coffee shop, find some live music, take a picnic to one of our parks or just go for a walk along one of our great multi-use trails. However you choose to see out 2016, everyone at Sports and Activities Magazine wishes you Happy Holidays and a great and prosperous New Year! My warmest wishes,
Nikki Reading

I
was sitting in my nice office, having coffee and chatting with my assistant. This was a terrific job with good salary and great people in a respected nonprofit; the classiest job I ever had. Sitting there, I realized I hated the job. I was miserable and I wasn’t performing well. If you’ve been in this situation, you know how distressing and frustrating it is. When we realize it’s not a good fit, if we can stop beating ourselves up or blaming the boss (or the stars) we can figure out what to do. First, how did we get into this fix? We often gravitate into jobs or careers based on a complex brew of parents’ wishes, teachers’ influence, what friends are doing, what jobs are hot, where the money is, or other factors. These influences can leave us in a poor-fit job. Here’s the good news; people entering the workforce over the last few years will have 4 or 5 different careers! That’s right, not just jobs but careers, due to many factors including the pace of economic, technology, and social change. How do we adjust to this ever-changing work environment or move out of that wrong job? First, figure out what our talents, strengths, and passions are. Second, figure out how to get ready and move into a new area that’s a good fit. Sitting in the beauty parlor one day, idly reading a magazine, I was intrigued by an interview with a famous hair stylist. The interviewer began, “I understand you started working at 15.” The man replied immediately, “I never worked a day in my life.” I was thunderstruck. When we’re doing what we love and are good at, it never seems like work. That coincidence sent me scurrying to a program about how to change career direction. During the sessions, we explored every aspect of how to combine our experience, natural gifts, and interests into meaningful job choices. I did the soul searching and research, made a plan, got necessary training, and found a new job. When I found that good-fit job, I looked forward to going to work every day and started doing well. Since then I’ve used the techniques I learned to evolve my own series of careers. Currently, I have the joy of helping others progress on their own path of job and career transition. I’m Rebecca Staton-Reinstein, president of Advantage Leadership, Inc. I got wonderful guidance on my own journey, so I’d love to pass it on and help you discover your passion and best-fit work, whether you’re at a career transition, just getting back into the workforce, or starting your own business. Let’s discuss your situation and discover if I can help you be more successful. Call (305) 606-9312, email Rebecca@AdvantageLeadership. com or visit www.AdvantageLeadership.com. You can hear me speak at the Women’s Power Lunch on January 11, 2016, (11:30am – 12:30pm) at the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce .

hopping for yourself or the special someone in your life can be a monumental undertaking during the holidays, but never at Footprints Boutique. Why? The reasons are simple: Selection, Location & Service. Footprints has a large selection of sought after name brands supplying jewelry, clothing, accessories and footwear for all ages and styles of women. They are easy to get to, as they are located in the heart of Plantation on University Drive, directly across from the Westfield Broward Mall. Most importantly, however, is the service you get at Footprints Boutique. It is the magic of this gem of a ladies’ store. The kind of service you can only get from a family-run store for over four decades at the same location. Owners & Founders, Joan & Bob Charnow, are very proud of the traditions they have established and maintained as they grew from a ladies’ footwear boutique to a full service women’s boutique over the years. From mom and pop to a family run enterprise, daughters Sharin Leff and Cari Baranski, along with son-in-law John Baranski, manage and run Footprints Boutique’s day-to-day-operations. Bob’s sister Gina has been with Footprints for over 20 years and now designs and creates her own unique jewelry line, Gems by Gee, which is proudly featured at Footprints. Their staff is also considered their family and includes Martine (32 years with Footprints), Adrianne (15 years), Lori (11 years), Isabelle (8 years), as well as part-timers Joyce and Pam. Adding another generation to the Footprints Boutique family business are granddaughters, Amanda and Jessica, who jump in as Holiday Helpers during season. “Our customers are the crown jewels of Footprints Boutique,” said Cari & John. We are positive that anyone who walks through the door will find something they love for themselves or someone special in their life,” they added. They invite you to experience the secret of what three generations of women have enjoyed. Browse through and try on any of their unique jewelry, apparel, shoes, handbags, accessories and gifts. Their brand names speak for themselves: Alex and Ani, Brighton, Pandora, Kameleon, David Cline, Mesmerize,
Jag, Democracy, FitFlop, Vionic and many more. Once you find that special something that is the perfect gift, let them gift wrap it for you while you wait, it’s always complimentary! After being in the same location since they opened in 1974, Footprints Boutique has not only made a name for themselves, they have made an impact in their community. “Just as our parents did when they were getting started, we are honored to continue to give back to the community that has supported us over these past four decades,” said Sharin. “Our involvement in the community is a key component of our business,” she added. Most of the Footprints team members were raised right here in the Plantation community, and are now raising their families here as well. They work closely with individuals at all of the organizations Footprints Boutique supports such as; Relay for Life, Woman in Distress, The Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Make A Wish Foundation, FD NOW, and Debbie’s Dream, just to name a few. Footprints Boutique also works closely with local schools raising money for all their needs including sports, clubs, and PTAs. Not only do they provide monetary support, but they also hold yearly clothing and food drives and drop-offs. “We have helped raise over $200,000 and look forward to raising even more,” Sharin said. Footprints Boutique is a charming shop where you can find excellent products, personal service and prices that will bring a smile to your face. To keep a smile on your face, Footprints offers further value and discounts through their Birthday Club, Royalty Rewards Club, Loyalty Club, Gift Certificates, and complimentary gift-wrapping. Whatever your need, they will work timelessly to go the EXTRA mile. Footprints Boutique is conveniently located opposite the Broward Westfield Mall at 240 S. University Dr. in Plantation. You may reach them at (954) 475-1520 or follow them on Facebook/Footprints Ltd.

I
n the fall of 1992, Renée Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But she didn’t stop there. Twenty-four years later, Renée is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston, Plantation Rotary, Coconut Creek Rotary and Hollywood Rotary have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses like The Castle Group help with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals including Jim Norton, Michael Freedland, Steve Goldstein, Robert Harms, Joe Marouf, among many others, have been life savers in the 11th hour when we did not have enough food for the promised families,” said Renée. Another distinctive characteristic of the program
By Melissa Harless, Managing Director of Publishing
is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renée adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,200 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites will be set up at 15 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites. Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to
the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said. Herman does not comprehend the word “no” when
EVENTS
Here is how you can say, “YES, I want to help!” • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect nonperishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites. • Spread the word!

it comes to Harvest Drive. Her passion, persistence and work ethic will not allow her to accept “no.” The Harvest Drive team continues their efforts throughout the year. They would like to give special recognition to the North Broward Preparatory Middle School for their Fundraising efforts and collections for Harvest Drive. For the past 3 years they have assisted 75 Broward County School families with food and a boutique at their Spring Into Action Drive. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renée says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the businesses and individuals mentioned above, Renée and her team would also like to thank the Jim Moran Foundation, Carolina Ale House, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Whole Foods, Ultimate Software, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Florida Panthers and Memorial Healthcare System for their continued partnership.

After her last Paralympics, Terese went on to coach Table Tennis with her husband, championing the sport wherever she goes and showing all people, with or without disabilities, that adversity is not a reason to give up. “The sport is a catalyst for me to get into a person’s heart. Table Tennis helped me heal and gave me this opportunity to help other people,” she said. Terese often is asked to speak to individuals and groups about overcoming adversity of all kinds. “One thing that I always say is to ‘BELIEVE’ and to ‘BE POSITIVE’ because there is nothing stopping them but themselves from realizing their dreams. My fate was to help people by just being me. I’ve never asked ‘why me?’ again,” she added. After coaching at a private school facility for a while, they merged with Carlos Zeller at a leased facility in Hollywood and then Dania Beach Florida. Thanks to Mr. Zeller, their dream of having one of the most amazing Table Tennis facilities in the country has come true, the Broward Table Tennis Club located in Davie. This new facility, built to specifications, houses 19 competition table tennis courts, competition flooring shipped in from Beijing, China and excellent lighting. A variety of unique and traditional dance classes are offered at Pure Dynamics for children as young as 2 years all the way to adults; there are even classes suitable for seniors. “There is something here for everyone!” says Donna. Donna’s theory is, “Whether you are age two or ninety two, your joints still need to be protected.” The instructors at Pure Dynamics give everyone the special attention that they need during their class time. All the instructors at the studio love what they do and it shows. The studio is very busy within the community so you can be sure to see them around town performing at festivals, parades, and charity events. Prices range from $20 to $45 a month. There is never a registration fee, no contracts, and the first class is always FREE. You have nothing to lose, so come give us a whirl! A Healthier : e c r o iv D Expert Tips To A More Peaceful Process – Part I By Dr. David Yudell & Eric Rayman, Esq. (Family Law)
D
ivorce is never easy. Separating your family and finances can be incredibly ugly or remarkably civil. With just about half of marriages now ending in divorce, choosing how you separate will have lasting impact far beyond the final judgment. Especially when children are involved, deciding on compromise over conflict ensures a smoother transition to a new normal. You’ll never regret acting with consideration and may find peace of mind you could not achieve slugging it out in court. Pursuit of a peaceful resolution means doing your homework and developing an action plan. Below are expert tips to help you succeed on this journey. Tip #1: Own your part: There are often strong emotions associated with divorce and a temptation to cast blame. While it may be easy to emphasize your soon to be ex’s shortcomings, there is little to be gained. When a relationship of this significance fails both parties share responsibility. Rather than point fingers, consider your role in the demise of the marriage. Taking time to self-reflect and identify areas in need of improvement is critical to personal growth. Future relationship success depends on accepting responsibility and a commitment to positive changes. Tip #2: Don’t avoid the hard stuff: Letting go of your marriage can seem overwhelming. Feelings of loss and uncertainty are common. Don’t make the mistake of burying these emotions. Instead, allow yourself time to grieve. Embrace a therapeutic approach and recognize there is no one size fits all solution in working through your emotions. This is a time of transition and an important step is finding closure. The sooner you successfully deal with
the past, the sooner you can gain control and can start moving ahead. Tip #3: Trust your kids: Divorce is a disruptive process especially when children are involved. Although tempting to try and insulate your kids from the fallout, it is hard to hide disharmony between parents. Avoiding the subject or ignoring obvious signs of trouble is a recipe for fueling feelings of resentment and distrust. Do not risk losing credibility with your kids at this critical time. Rather, once a decision to separate is made, parents should prioritize sitting down to discuss what’s going on. Although you will not have all the answers, being open and honest will only breed confidence. While each situation presents unique challenges, always reassure your kids that you will continue to love them and to make decisions with their best interest at heart. Tip #4: Settlement is best: For many compelling reasons, family law matters should almost always be resolved. Litigation by its nature is disruptive and costly. If kids are involved, custody, timesharing, and child support must all be addressed. Rather than preparing for battle, your focus should be on promoting stability and preserving precious emotional and financial resources. Although there are a handful of situations where litigation is necessary (i.e.: your spouse wants to move the kids out of the state and you don’t agree, or your spouse has documents that he/she is unwilling to produce), most issues can and should be resolved outside the courtroom. Settlement offers clarity that litigation simply cannot provide and allows the parties to turn their attention to the future. (To be continued….) We invite you to reach out for future article suggestions. Please email us at DrYudell@DrYudell.com or Erayman@gjb-law.com.

THE EMERGENCY CENTER OF DAVIE –
MAKING EMERGENCY CARE LESS STRESSFUL T
he future of emergency care has arrived to the residents of Western Broward County with the Emergency Center of Davie. We’ve all been in the scenario when we, or a family member, have become ill or injured and the doctor’s office is closed. So the question often comes up of whether to go to an Urgent Care Clinic or to an emergency room. How do you know which of these is most appropriate? What does the Emergency Center offer? The Emergency Center is a special extension of Florida Medical Center; the services are designed to create a comfortable atmosphere with reduced waiting times, while maintaining the same functionality of the hospital-based emergency room. The Emergency Center of Davie offers 24-hour treatment and diagnostic services in a neighborhood style center focused on your comfort and convenience. The Emergency Center is equipped and staffed to handle many of the same serious conditions as a full service hospital emergency department, including: Orthopedic and Sport Injuries, Dehydration, Abdominal Pain, Respiratory Problems, Lacerations and Head Injuries. In addition the Emergency Center will offer the following: Adult and Walk- In Pediatric Care, Advanced CT Scan, X-ray and Ultrasound, Imaging, Laboratory and Pharmacy Services, Respiratory Care, Ambulance Access, Access to Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians and Registered Nurses. The Emergency Center will also offer online appointments
through InQuickER. This new program allows patients to go online and register to hold their place, offering patients the ability to wait in the comfort of their home and come into the Emergency Center at the assigned time. The Emergency Center of Davie is home to the Imaging Center of West Broward and Florida Medical Center’s Sleep Disorders Center. The Sleep Disorders Center offers private, comfortable rooms designed to get to the root of a patient’s sleep troubles. The program has an equipped sleep laboratory for overnight evaluations, advanced technology and a team of experienced health professionals. For more information on the Sleep Disorders Center, please call (954) 653-3704, option 2 or email Sunrise.sleep@tenethealth.com Originally located in Sunrise, the Imaging Center of West Broward relocated to the Emergency Center of Davie due to an increase in patient population. The Imaging Center of West Broward is now located at the convenient location of the Emergency Center of Davie and provides the following services: CAT Scans, Calcium Scoring, CTA (CT Angiograms), Echocardiogram, Sleep Studies, Ultrasound, and X-Ray. For more information visit www.imagingcenterofwestbroward.com or call (954) 318-2090. If you have a life-threatening emergency, call 911. The Emergency Center is located at 10230 W. BCPS’s Career, Technical, Adult, & Community Education (CTACE) Department: Engineering a Bright Future E
ach issue, the CTACE Department of Broward County Public Schools will be highlighting one of our Career Pathway programs. Each Career Pathway program is strategically designed to teach students College Readiness and Employability Skills. In addition, students in a Career Pathway prepare to pass the industry-level certifications necessary to earn high-skill, high-wage positions directly after high school or college graduation. Our first Pathway focus is Engineering. One of the most consistently growing fields in the workforce, jobs in Engineering nationwide are expected to grow 10% in the next decade; in Broward County, careers in engineering and related fields are expected to grow by nearly 20%. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor beginning engineers earn, on average, $62,000 directly out of college, and the average salary for engineers nationwide is $95,000. For our students, these numbers are too staggering to ignore. The sooner we can begin to identify students who may be interested in a career in engineering and guide them on that path, the better! Across Broward County Public Schools, the CTACE Department oversees engineering programs at nineteen high schools, serving over 4,000 students in courses such as architectural engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, computer drafting, robotics, and many more. Students earned over four-hundred industry-level certifications in MasterCam, SolidWorks, and AutoCad, just to name a few, and we are expanding to
include certification opportunities in RECF Robotics. In particular, Western High offers courses in computer integrated manufacturing and engineering design & development. Students are also able to engage in competitions involving solar cars, robotics, and even simulated urban search and rescue missions with student-designed and student-created robots. Through organizations like SkillsUSA, FIRST Robotics, and MIASF, Broward students are able to leverage their skills to compete locally and nationally, earning prizes and scholarships for their efforts and the efforts of their master teachers. One of our goals is to continue to connect more of our teachers and students with partners in industry. Recently, students from four high schools toured a variety of local manufacturing facilities. There, they were able to witness how the skills they learn in the classroom are being put to use in our community by highly successful businesses like Stimpson, Hoerbiger, and Sunbelt. With increased exposure comes increased opportunities for paid internships and apprenticeships for students, both of which are goals for the CTACE Department. For more information on Engineering programs in Broward Schools, please contact James Payne, CTACE Curriculum Supervisor, at james.payne@browardschools.com. “Broward County CTACE Career Pathway students are prepared to pass industrylevel certifications necessary to earn high-skill, high-wage positions directly after high school or college.”

lamingo Elementary has adopted a Spanish Dual Language program this 2016–2017 school year. The goal of the Dual Language class is for students to have the opportunity to become fully bilingual by learning, listening, speaking, reading and writing in two different languages. The advantages of students enrolled in a Dual Language program include meeting the demands of today’s society, college and career readiness, developing higher-order thinking skills, and multicultural awareness and appreciation. The Dual Language program is supported by Broward County Public Schools Bilingual/ESOL Department. Teachers are provided curriculum and materials to teach in English and Spanish that are aligned with Florida State Standards. At Flamingo this school year, there are 36 Kindergarten students enrolled in the program. Students are instructed in both languages, every school day. Flamingo Elementary chose a model known as the Gomez and Gomez Model of Dual Language Enrichment, the 50–50 model. The program is implemented by teaching all of the subject areas in the home language (English) and the same
subject areas in the second language that the student is acquiring (Spanish). Reading and writing are taught through the content area (Science and Social Studies) in a Dual Language program. Students are grouped with a balance of native and non-native language speakers. Dual language acquisition is complex; it involves the brain of the child activating certain sections. Research shows that students can become fully bilingual after being exposed at an early age to academic language in the second language for five to seven consecutive years. At Flamingo, Dual Language begins in Kindergarten and students will continue to be enrolled in the program the following school year. The knowledge and skills learned in one language are transferred to the second language. Students in the Dual Language program are being instructed at an accelerated pace but are learning skills in both languages. The teachers of the Dual Language program are certified, highly qualified, 21st century teachers with years of experience in the education field. Teachers and staff at Flamingo Elementary look forward to continuing the Dual Language program for many years to come.
BROWARD COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT, MR. ROBERT RUNCIE VISITS GRIFFIN ELEMENTARY T
“Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader.” - W. Fusselman
he quote above is written on a mural in the media center at Griffin Elementary and became alive this September when Superintendent, Mr. Runcie came to visit Griffin Elementary. Ms. Silig, the principal of Griffin Elementary, showed Mr. Runcie how the school is using the bond money to provide students with a 21st Century Education that leads them into the joy of reading and high student engagement. Griffin Elementary is already scheduled to receive a new playground for pre-k, Kindergarten, first, and second grade students. We will also be receiving new technology to enhance students’ learning in all grade levels. Mr. Runcie’s visit started by reading The Train Ride to our second grade students. The author of The Train Ride, Mrs. Susie Ruder is one of our second grade teachers and a Broward County educator for thirty years. Students listened attentively as Mr. Runcie read how in 1960, two kids meet on a train ride bound for New York City. The two girls could not be together because they were different. In her book, Mrs. Ruder explains in a child’s friendly way the racial conflicts faced by the 1960 generation. Students, as well as Mr. Runcie, enjoyed finding out that by the end of the story the two kids were able to overcome prejudice and became friends. Superintendent Runcie encouraged students to value the fact that we all are different. He shared with students how wonderful it is to be unique because it makes the world a better place. He motivated students to value

the differences in other people and always be helpful and make new friends. Furthermore, Mr. Runcie visited and interacted with students in other grade levels. Mrs. Stewart’s fifth grade students shared their anticipation for visiting BizTown and all that they are learning about free enterprise, money, the economy, and how to apply for a job. He also visited Ms. Lauren Ruder a kindergarten teacher who is a former Griffin student and the daughter of Mrs. Susie Ruder. She welcomed Mr. Runcie into her classroom and taught a math lesson on nonstandard unit of measurements. The kindergarten students and Mr. Runcie were surprised to find out that he is as tall as President, Abraham Lincoln. Students enjoyed doing their math lesson of the day with the Broward Superintendent. Griffin Eco-Patrol members led by Mrs. Sanchez conducted a guided tour of our Environmental Center with Mr. Runcie. These students used iPods to show Mr. Runcie how to use QR Codes to learn information about the trees that are in the Environmental Center. Eco-Patrol members explained how the vegetable garden beds are used by the different grade levels. Students invited Mr. Runcie to come back and taste some of the salads from the vegetables that they are planting. Griffin will continue implementing innovative initiatives to educate the whole child. That is the key to motivate our students to love learning and reading. “Today’s Readers will be Tomorrow’s Leaders!”

TIME FOR A TECHNOLOGY FAST By Jodi Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Education at Temple Dor Dorim Early Childhood Center
W
hen I was little the night before my parents set out to their New Year’s Eve festivities and we prepared for our kid fete of cocktail weenies and party hats, we would sit in my parent’s bedroom writing out our New Year’s Eve resolutions and goals. We would each fold our little list a half a dozen times and tuck our piece of paper away in one of the Encyclopedias that lined my parent’s shelves. They were always lofty aspirations but appropriate to our age. Be nicer to our siblings. Be more helpful to mom. Save our allowance instead of spend it. My parents were always similar as well. Lose weight. Start to workout. Save money. Gung-ho, the goals would of course last for a while and then eventually fizzle out. Following in the family tradition, I began discussing this topic with my daughter in preparation for setting goals and ambitions for the New Year. After asking her if she understood what a goal was, she thought hard about what kind of commitments she could make. I was floored when she suggested a “technology fast” for us all. I asked her what this would involve. As my daughter explained to me
how everyone is always texting on their phones, iPad or laptops, what if we didn’t do it for a day? I asked her what she thought would happen if we all “fasted” together? “More board games?” she asked…but it sounded more like a suggestion. “Play outside or cook together?”…she continued. It was then I realized how much our little ones are missing out on crucial “family time” my own included. Seated on the couch side by side, snuggling, but each with our own distraction, our little ones are picking up on it. Cooking while texting, on the phone will driving, on the IPad while they do homework…all times together with our little ones… but not really together. I realize that the more “connected” we are, the more “disconnected” we become. Guilty as charged, like so many of us, an unfortunate addictive sign of the times. So we decided to set a goal…but a realistic one; to start, one night a week of technology fasting. For a moment I am tempted to pull out my phone and jot our new plan in the notes section of my phone but decide to go the old fashioned route and use paper. These days, as my shelves are not lined with Encyclopedias, we take our vows and instead of folding them and tucking them away, we tape them to the inside of the IPad cover to serve as a reminder for when we reach for our temptations.

“L earn Today ~ Lead Tomorrow.” What a wonderful theme to start off the new school year! Here at Fox Trail Elementary, we are in the process of becoming a Leader in Me School and we are excited to report this journey to all of you. As a Leader in Me School, we will be integrating The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Covey, 1989) into our day-to-day learning. Imagine this, the jobs we are trying to prepare our students for in the future don’t even exist yet! Our students not only need academics, but also need to learn how to be successful participants in today’s world and lead the way. So what does this look like here on the Trail? Our staff and students have been working diligently to demonstrate their leadership skills. For the month of September we focused on Being Proactive and taking responsibility for our own actions and attitudes. We cannot always choose what happens to us in life, but we can choose how we respond. We saw students
everywhere demonstrating this habit and had our first Leader of the Month Celebration on September 30th to celebrate those students who demonstrated this trait the most in each classroom. During the month of October we focused on the second habit, Begin with the End in Mind. This means that before we can physically create an idea we need to have a mental image of what our end goal should look like. Students are setting academic and personal goals while planning the steps necessary to achieve them. If we Begin with the End in Mind, we will have a clear path as to where we want to go and what success will look like. We are also excited about our new Special class, Synergy. Here the children learn how to put it all together, integrate ideas, work with others and come up with even new and better ideas as a team! Leadership to the max! So you see, “Learn Today ~ Lead Tomorrow” is a wonderful theme. Here at Fox Trail, we are creating leaders every day!
Amping Up The Extra Curriculum At Nova High School By Corrine E. Dannon

or many students, high school is more than just a place for learning. It is also a place where they get the opportunity to partake in clubs, activities and sports that they would not have access to outside of school. With strong belief that engagement in these activities is paramount to each student’s development, Nova High School offers some of the most comprehensive academics and extracurricular activities in the county. Fall sports include everything from football, volleyball, swimming, golf, and cross country, followed by soccer, basketball, and wrestling in the winter, and baseball, softball, and tennis in the spring. Nova also impresses with a wide array of clubs for students to choose from. Student Government and Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders offer excellent leadership opportunities, while other clubs like Habitat for Humanity, Gay Straight Alliance and Best Buddies get students involved with the causes they believe in. For students who don’t have the time after school to participate in a sport or club, there are plenty of academic options that offer hands-on experiences during the regular school schedule. This year, anatomy teacher Justin Whitehorn launched a new forensics class, where students learn how to lift fingerprints, examine criminal
profiles, and even investigate and analyze a staged crime scene. Debate, led by Christopher Relyea, continues to be one of Nova’s highest-achieving academic courses. Last year, the Debate team finished third in the country out of 4,000 teams, and currently ranks number one in Florida and the country! Nova also offers an excellent culinary program where students get the opportunity to graduate with a level three serve safe certification in managerial food service. “As a school leader, it is crucial to understand and embrace the notion that effective schools not only have strong academic programs, but co-curricular activities as well. We need to promote the concept of the ‘whole and well-rounded’ child. Short of that, we are doing a disservice to our kids,” said Dr. John LaCasse, Nova High School Principal. Nova strives to provide these opportunities for students to achieve good academic results while actively promoting the benefits of a varied curriculum. After all, high school should be seen as a transformative experience through which students can prepare themselves to succeed in the many and varied roles they will undertake throughout their lives.

t’s 3:30pm; there is silence in the halls with no one in sight, except for in the Pioneer Middle School library where Mrs.Hammer’s Speech and Debate team are preparing for their first competition. From outside the doors you can hear the students energetically practicing their performance to make them better than ever. Every Tuesday, CCHS Speech and Debate students visit Pioneer to mentor the middle school class. They help prepare them for the various competitions that are included in their tournaments such as Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Original Oratory, Declamation, Impromptu, Oral Interpretation, Duo, Public Forum, and Congress. “Mentoring the Pioneer kids is truly and honor and a privilege,” said Cooper City High freshman, Jenna Lewen. “Considering the fact that I was one of them a few months ago, it’s so special to me to see the new members and their skills. So far none of them have ceased to amaze me and I cannot wait to see them blossom into superstars throughout the year!” Our eighth graders have put much of their time and energy into making our school even more proud than they already are. “With much hard work and dedication, Pioneer brought home nine medals this competition and are expected to win more in October,” said Mrs. Hammer, who has been teaching speech and debate since last year. Her students have brought home gold from each tournament and this year’s students are expected to do the same. Mrs. Hammer adds, “Students in speech and debate gain critical thinking and life skills, they leave with the tools they need to confidently express their ideas and make their voices relevant and valuable.”

or too many children Harry Potter is a series of movies or a theme park to explore and the magic of the books has grown dust. After all, J.K. Rowling penned the series of novels more than a decade ago. At it’s inception, the wizarding world of Harry Potter set an entire generation on fire with a resurgence of reading. Children attended midnight parties when the new books were published and read long into the night. At Silver Ridge we are getting back into that thrill of reading the series and celebrating the stories with a club that meets monthly. The Ministry of Muggles, (a name dreamed up by 5th grade student Bennett) is comprised of third, fourth and fifth graders. Teacher/ librarian Elaine Aaron sponsors the club and encourages her readers to get to know Harry anyway they can. They can read the books themselves, with a teacher or parent, or listen to an audible version of the books. The deal breaker for membership into the club is to only watch the movies. Students are required to make a commitment to read the actual novel. Ms. Aaron claims to have as much fun as the students! Last year
the students were “sorted” into houses, mirroring the procedure that takes place in the books. The students participated in activities such as making Tom Riddle diaries, chocolate frogs, magic wands, and playing a modified version of quiditch. Students who participated in the club last year act as “prefects” and mentor new members. The entire series is constantly checked out and the magical world of Harry Potter is more than a theme park or series of movies to this group of “muggles!” In addition to the Ministry of Muggles, another literacy club meets monthly at Silver Ridge Elementary. This club is known as the genre of the month club. Students read within a specified genre and share their opinions of the books and participate in related activities. September’s genre was graphic novels and students had a “booktasting.” They explored new graphic novels and completed restaurant menu critiques to share their opinions with their friends and the school community at large. At Silver Ridge Elementary we encourage all our students to take a bite out of reading!
