To all Clients, Readers, and Friends, I had forgotten how beautiful the sunsets are here on the west coast of Florida and how frequently we can experience the beauty and warmth they bring. There’s something about escaping from a challenging day at work or an adventurous day with your family and taking a moment to watch the sun set in its western horizon. Maybe a place for viewing would be at one of our beautiful local beaches where you can wade in the cool gulf waters, or make funny squeaky sounds with your toes in the fine, white sand beneath your feet. There seems to be a calming effect that overtakes you as you feel the gentle sea breeze and the sun’s rays on your face. Watching each continual wave pound upon the beach as the last moments of light for that day fill the sky with its brilliant, bright, and multiple rainbow colors of the evening bring such peace of mind. This is one reason why the Sports and Activities Directory was created. To make

our wonderful residents of all ages from Sarasota and Manatee counties aware of the multiple opportunities available to fit your lifestyle, age or interest--to encourage you to get out, and to be part of the beauty that surrounds you as you expand your horizon. We are so grateful for your faithful participation and involvement in our previous issues--fall, winter and spring - of the Sports and Activities Directory and we look forward to your continued support in our endeavors to expand in the future. As summer approaches, take advantage of the many family activities that are available to you in our area, including our Summer Camps Section. Remember, the Sports and Activities Directory is here for you, as a guide. Keep it in a handy spot so you can refer to it as often as possible and as a quick reminder of things to come. The directory can also serve as a reference resource to contact numbers and information; such as, summer camps, businesses, medical services, schools, etc. We are also on Facebook updating daily at Sports & Activities Directory LWR & Suncoast. As this day comes to an end and the sun slowly slips behind the western horizon, don’t let time pass you by. Be grateful for the place we live-and watch more sunsets. Have a wonderful and blessed summer! See you out on the field or out in the waves. Blessings, Corrie

s we approach summer vacation, every family wants to make a big splash in the ocean of fun; or as Floridians, at least into the Gulf of Mexico. Many times, however, that splash ends up being right into a dreary mud puddle without some good old-fashioned planning. This season, take out the (almost obsolete) pen and scratch pad together as a family. In the car or at the dinner table, have everyone contribute their top three hopes for this summer. If your kids like to live large, preface with the budget-friendly boundaries first, so they know if meeting characters at Disney is a dream come true or just a fairy tale. Then, let them enjoy, imagine, hope, plan and even save for those things. I know you are busy. Families will eternally be busy, but kids will always remember how they spent their summers, and there are always ways to sneak in some treasured moments. Make the most of those moments by letting everyone, old and young, big and small, have a say. Then, get a calendar out and commit at least one day, if not several days, to each person’s contribution. If you don’t make your family’s dreams come true intentionally, one thing is certain; They never will! Also, if no one in the family will do your chosen events with you, recruit a friend or take the plunge of learning how to enjoy yourself all over again; like you once did when you were young and carefree. Here are a few ideas to help you get started as well as a few things to avoid AT ALL COSTS! No one is perfect, we will and do make mistakes; but loving ourselves and our families well will make up for an abundance of errors we make along the way.
Make a Splash!! • Read the lists of events in this issue of LWR Sports and
Activities Directory. You’re doing this and you are off to a great start already! • Allow your kids opportunities to make money to both spend and save at home and out and about. • Tell your kids how much you appreciate them when you see them make efforts to follow through with your requests. Hug them frequently; they won’t be in your house forever.
by Christa Hardin, MA, LLP, BCLC
• Stop to smell the roses. Take walks or visit the lesscrowded beach or parks for an evening stroll or swim. • Have a date night as mom and dad only (or just mom only) at the beach at least once, complete with a sunset dip in the water, a cooler, headphones and books; like you are just as carefree as any tourist ever was! • If you can, go somewhere overnight; such as a new state, an amusement venue, a national park or campground (with at least basic cabins if you’re anything like me!). • Plan in plenty of air-conditioned time at the library or coffee shop, weekly with the kids so they get more variety and contrast, even if they are reluctant. • Go to help someone in need on your own or as a family. Some nursing homes welcome families to come in and offer wrapped candies, bring a bunny for them to pet, or play an instrument. • There are families in every neighborhood that need a meal or a babysitter, and certainly there are clubs and churches galore that have an outpouring of community volunteer opportunities.
Nosediving:
• Forgetting to tell your teen, who helps with rides, how much you appreciate them and also not rewarding them for their efforts. • Allowing your kids to play on video games all day long while you scroll FB and don’t make plans. • Cleaning all day long every day because you don’t like the sight of messes but don’t feel like you can take a break and don’t like to lose control. • Allowing your child’s friends to come to every single thing you do or never letting the friends come. • Going to the beach without a swimsuit during the hottest time of the day (aka grouchy mom syndrome) and letting no one get a treat because the prices are hiked up for tourists. • Not giving opportunities for your child to make money to spend and save and either spoiling them or leaving them alone. • Treating your kids to a fun event and then wrecking its effects by complaining that they never help you. Just remember to have fun and if you feel you need to talk to someone, we are just a phone call away. Christa Hardin can be reached at Reflections Counseling (941) 301-8420.

elationships are wonderful. Relationships are sticky. Relationships are WORK. Whether it’s a family member, spouse, child, boyfriend, boss, co-worker, or neighbor, no one has the skinny on how to relate. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my closest girlfriends….and why I love them so much. In my 50 plus years, I’ve moved 10 times, and I’ve made acquaintances, friends, and best friends. I did not really have a true “bestie” until the 8th grade, when I formed a close bond with a girl my age with similar family dynamics, who walked alongside of me through the horrible hormones, traumatic events, and getting married. We recently connected in person, finally, and never lost a beat. We only talked for 3 hours but could have gone on for days. Then in late high school, I met another girl who, like me, wanted to just have fun, live life to the fullest, and though we were and are very different, we bonded. We don’t live near each other anymore, so we have to work at communicating. Her life has taken a different road than mine, but we love each other nonetheless. After getting married for the second time, I reconnected with a college acquaintance/friend, when we were both in our twenties, and having our babies. Geographically, we lived near each other for 23 years, and grew closer through a painful divorce, diets galore, political debates, and many laughs and tears. Though we do not talk every day, or even every week, there is an undeniable bond between us like no other, and she knows that I would do anything she asked me to. Then there are the mentor girlfriends, those that are 10 to 15 years older than me, who have gone before me, with husbands and kids and trials, and I cherish their counsel. In between the BFFs and mentors, I have formed friendships with others, and we know we can depend on each other. They know what my funeral memorial will look like, since I have shared it with them. However, there have been lost
relationships that are painful. Women who died too young. Women who I used to talk and exercise with, who suddenly disappeared. Women who I studied the bible with for weeks, and never heard from again. Women who I worked with, but once the job was over, moved on. Ouch. Losing those have hurt. Don’t get me wrong….I am grateful for the ones that still exist. I would be a lonely soul without my friendships. Living in a new state for just 9 months, I’ve had to form new ones. It’s like starting all over again. I guess in a way I kind of like starting with a new slate. Sometimes, starting over means, learning more about your self and what you like or; perhaps that’s because I know that the solid rocks of my inner circle are always just a phone call away. If you need help learning about how to find and be a friend, don’t hesitate to book a coaching appointment with me, so we can help you make sure your friendships, whether they are for the season or the ones God ordained, make it for the long haul! 703-839-0225 Melissa Jansen, B.S., BCLC, is an advanced board certified life coach, with over 30 years of experience in education, child care management, and nonprofit executive leadership. much earlier, while the primary or “baby” teeth are still present. Parents may
32
assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth before seeking orthodontic treatment. However, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child get a check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7 to help mitigate potential problems early. This gives your orthodontist the best chance to: • Guide jaw growth • Lower the risks of trauma to protruded front teeth • Correct harmful oral habits • Improve appearance and self-esteem • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position • Improve the way lips meet • Reduce the potential for future surgery It is not always easy for parents to tell when their child has an orthodontic problem. Even teeth that look straight may be hiding a problematic bite. By age 7, enough permanent teeth have formed for an orthodontist to evaluate relationships developing between the teeth, jaw and bite. Orthodontists can determine what, if anything, is awry. A visit to the orthodontist can ease a parent’s mind, too. Sometimes, our recommendation may simply be ‘let’s wait and see’ while the face and jaws continue to grow, but just knowing where his/her child is developmentally can give parents piece of mind.
Some of the more apparent conditions that indicate the need for an examination include: • early or late loss of baby teeth • difficulty in chewing or biting • mouth breathing • thumb sucking • crowding, misplaced or blocked-out teeth • jaws that shift or make sounds • speech difficulties • biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth • teeth that meet abnormally, or don’t meet at all • facial imbalance • jaws that are too far forward or back • grinding or clenching of the teeth Not only do well-aligned teeth look good and feel good, they also are important for good dental health. Poorly aligned teeth can lead to dental problems. Not everyone needs orthodontic treatment, but if your child does need help, it pays to start treatment when you have the greatest chance for success! For more information, visit Dr. Baker’s website, www.drbakerorthodontics. com or call the office at 941-355-3808. Dr. Baker is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), which has 17,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. Orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists who correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws (bad bites). They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper and safe way to align and straighten teeth.

The absence of physical education in schools has worried many
36
parents in these past years. Experts recommend at least 150 to 200 minutes of physical education activities per week in schools. This recommendation does not include extra physical education activities outside the normal school week. As we all know, physical education not only helps to improve physical fitness and health of students, but also helps them perform physical activities by understanding the importance of staying healthy and the importance of the positive impact it builds throughout their lives. In addition, physical education provides knowledge and important development skills, such as team work, fair play, respect, awareness of the body and social skills. It also promotes general understanding of the “rules of the game” that students can utilize, not only in school, but also in life as they grow. Given its many benefits, the focus for physical education should remain high. Benefits of Physical Activities Being active in everyday life is good for everyone and, even more so, for our children. It helps to stay fit and to grow healthy. Physical activities are in fact essential to both the physical and psychological development. It promotes agility, improves coordination and reduces the risk of obesity. It also helps emotional control, improves self-esteem, increases social skills and independence and most importantly, if promoted correctly, it is fun. Some simple physical activities such as biking, walking and running are all more than helpful. These can become daily routine activities for children to have fun, understanding their body and improve their healthy lifestyle. Motivating children to move is necessary; however, positive support from parents is very significant. Any type of movement, regardless of the state of health is a physiological necessity for any child. It is an integral part of his/her process of growth development. As mentioned above, the movement promotes a physical and psychological body growth. It increases agility and strength and therefore, improves self-esteem and sense of well-being. It also promotes learning and
encourages socialization and team work. It may also help prevent many diseases (hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, etc.) as well as allowing the children to develop various stimuli and to gain independence, orientation and identification with the outside environment in which they are part of everyday. An active child will become an active and healthy adult. The number of overweight children seems to be growing and as such, it can have many negative consequences such as, increased risk of diabetes, increased risk in high blood pressure and also risk of bone and joint disease, not to mention the negative effect to our children’s self-esteem. Physical activities are, no doubt, a promotion for a healthy life style. Some Encouraging Tips and Physical Activities 1. Bicycling 2. Walking 3. Encourage outside activities and play 4. Involvement in any sport activity helps to develop many physical & social skills as described above 5. No pressure-- the physical activity has to be a way of daily routine, in the form of free play, walking, etc. As parents, we need to remember that putting pressure on our children, directly or indirectly, will only push them away from any type of activities. ummertime, fun time! After working hard for 180 days your children are ready for a well-deserved “break”. Hmmm…a break from the school norm can and will be thoroughly enjoyed. However, studies show a loss of knowledge can take place over the summer months. According to a 2007 study of first-third graders in a school in a middle class neighborhood (“Summer Reading Loss”, M. Mraz, T. Rasinski, The Reading Teacher) math decoding skills of 45% of the students and fluency skills of 25% declined over summer. The percentages were even higher for lower achieving students. There are several ways we can help our young children keep from falling behind over the summer months. I remember as a young parent, before my teaching days, being worried about my two daughters falling behind. Every summer I would purchase workbooks with the intention of working with them each night; and every new school year I realized that I never got through the pages. Workbooks are great tools for children who enjoy doing them –and many children do. However, there are many children who have no interest in this type of learning especially at home. We need to take a long hard look at how our children learn. There are three main types of learning styles-auditory, visual and kinesthetic; learning by listening, seeing, and doing. Most people are a combination of all three of these but typically they are stronger in one area than the others. You might be wondering how to tell just what kind of learner your child is. Take some time to step back and really observe your child. Does he enjoy music? Listening to stories? This would be more of an auditory learner. How about blocks? Drawing? Puzzles? A child enjoying these activities may be stronger in kinesthetic learning. Does your child sit back and watch activities? Look at books quietly? This is a visual learner. Knowing how your child learns best can help answer some questions as to how to keep your child learning over the summer. Once you know your child’s learning strength it is time to enjoy all the activities that go along with that strength. Have fun with your child as they learn by exploring the world around them. Let them experiment using all of their senses. There are several ways/activities to help your child grow both academically and socially. Reading, writing and math are not just done in the classroom. These
areas of learning can be accomplished anywhere and everywhere you go. If you are planning a trip, whether a day trip to the beach, or a trip lasting several days, have your child be part of the planning. This will not only help them intellectually but making them part of the process makes them feel special and helps their selfconfidence too. Children of any age can be included. Young children can look at pictures in a travel book with you or on the internet. They can be included in the conversation about all the possibilities of the upcoming trip. Older children can do the same but they can read and see what might interest them. If you let them be part of the planning they will enjoy the trip even more. The visual learner will enjoy taking pictures, the auditory learner will enjoy tours, the kinesthetic learner will be that child who enjoys hands on museums and walks along the beach. If you are not going on a trip there are many ways to keep your child actively engaged at home. Puzzles are a delight for the kinesthetic learner. They help strengthen motor skills and thinking skills which can enhance their math ability. Building blocks also have endless possibilities as far as creative thinking. Having an art area readily available is enjoyable too. For your auditory learner don’t forget to have a CD available. There are some great learning CD’s out there. One thing I always try to emphasize with my students’ parents is journaling. What a great way to remember all the activities of summertime. Journaling not only helps with writing skills but reading too. Before turning in for the night have your child take a few minutes to jot down the day’s events. A very young child could just draw a picture. After drawing, or writing, talk about the journal entry. If your child has a hard time thinking about what to draw or write, talk about the day together before they do the journal entry. If you have a child who is more of an auditory learner give them the option of talking about their day into a recorder. Most importantly remember to keep summertime fun! KINNAN ELEMENTARY
appy Summer from Kinnan Elementary! We have had a fun and exciting end to the school year. Our Olympics is just around the corner and the students are so excited to learn about their country and show it off. Each class has selected a country and will host it on May 15. Look for information coming home with your child on how you can help. We are thrilled with our new addition of Assistant Principal Mrs. Tori Hicks. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and love of the students. She has been in Manatee County for 16 years and became a full time teacher in 2004. Last year, she received her Master’s in Educational Leadership and interned at Palm View Elementary, before coming to Kinnan. She is excited to work with teachers and parents and provide professional learning opportunities that support student learning. Fun Fact: Along with her husband
and 2 children they enjoy kayaking, fishing and going to the many parks to picnic and see the amazing wildlife Florida has to offer. We know she is a great asset to our school and we are so excited to welcome her on board. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events: May 6 is Kindergarten Round up. Don’t forget to sign up for our Summer Sports and Enrichment Camp. Letters were sent home and deposits are due to save your spot. The last PTO volunteer coffee for the year will be May 7. PTO will also be requesting new members for the upcoming year. This is a great way to get involved with our school and also to make new friends. If you would like more information on our PTO or how you can help please email kinnanpto@hotmail.com On behalf of everyone at Kinnan we wish you a very “sunny” summer. See you in August.

Top 6 Reasons Why Buying A Home Now Is The Best Decision H ere are 6 reasons why buying

a home right now is beneficial to you and your family. Prices are going up. In Sarasota County, the closed sales are up 10% from last year, Manatee County is up 5% and climbing. These prices can only climb higher. It still is a great time to find a good deal. There are still a lot of good deals out there. Homes are selling very close to 93% of list price, meaning buyers are still getting about a 7% discount off the list price. That still leaves room for good negotiations. I love “the negotiation stage” of real estate. I like getting the best price possible for my clients and playing a little hardball. Money is cheap to borrow. Now is one of the best times to borrow money for a mortgage. Rates are still at or below 4% for a fixed rate loan. A fixed rate means your rate won’t go up year after year. Waiting a year or two will cost you more. (Please look at the graph on my
ad) If you wait a year, interest rates most likely will rise and prices will most likely rise too. This graph shows higher interest rates but a lower purchase price. In either situation, it costs you more money if you wait too long to buy a home, whether it’s a first home or a “move up” scenerio. 5. Owning is better than renting. Most likely a mortgage payment on a home you own would be less than the rent you are paying. With a rental, you may be restricted on what you can do to the property to make it yours. You also have less options for neighborhoods and schools because your choices are fewer than if you would buy a home. 6. There are major tax breaks. You will save on your taxes if you are a homeowner because you can deduct the mortgage interest from your income taxes. You can also deduct your real estate taxes. To schedule a FREE buyer or seller consultation, please contact Michele Tanner at TannerSells@gmail.com for all of your real estate needs. (941) 894-5603.

he Fruitville Elementary has had an exciting year. Fruitville is filled with welcoming and loving staff members who want each child to succeed in school, No matter what! During the month of February, Fruitville Elementary participated in Career Day which allowed students to view a large variety of careers and vocations from local personnel and surrounding community businesses . There were representatives from the medical field, publishers, law enforcement and many other professional fields too numerous to mention. Many who participated found the students to be very excited and enthusiastic, and the teachers to be helpful
to the guest speakers so they can relate to the students. Many questions were asked on what education is needed for the specific job choice as well , this helps to engage the children on furthering their education. Career day is a valuable learning tool for students and for the businesses in our community. It gives an exposure to the students of the different kinds of careers out there but also allows the business to show off what they have to offer to these children. On behalf of everyone at Fruitville Elementary we wish you a safe and happy summer. For more information visit our website at www.sarasotacountyschools.net/schools/fruitville

It’s not ghosts or goblins that children fear the most.
48
Studies have shown that one of the biggest fears children (and most adults) have is the fear of public speaking. Having to stand up and speak in a room full of people can send a shivering chill down the spine of even the bravest of souls. The Boston Globe reported in January, 2009 that the fear of public speaking is the number 1 fear ahead of such ghoulish things as spiders, snakes and confined spaces. Drama Kids International, Inc. part of an international franchise organization whose proven drama skills program builds communication skills and confidence in children, offers the following five tips for parents to help develop strong speaking skills in their children to help them overcome their largest fear. “Just like adults, children need strong communication skills to succeed in life,” said Tamara Solum, who owns and operates Drama Kids of Manasota. ”By learning to speak with confidence, children will excel at basic school activities, such as giving a report to the class, reading aloud in a group setting or participating in discussions. It’s never too early to start practicing communication skills. Later on, they can apply these skills to a job interview, or giving a presentation at a board meeting.” Solum offers the following tips that parents can easily adopt at home to improve their children’s communication/ speaking skills: • Listen to what your child is saying. Children must feel that what they say is important. Put down the cell phone, turn off the computer, TV or car radio, and converse. Knowing that you are listening to them will reinforce their confidence in speaking to you and to others. • Practice developing strong eye contact. Require that your child look into your eyes whenever they speak to you.
Then challenge them to do the same when talking to anyone else. Praise them when you see this happening. • Develop articulation. Use tongue twisters to emphasize articulation in a fun way. Concentrate on correct articulation. Do not allow the child to speak too fast at the cost of poor articulation. • Ask open-ended questions that require more than a `yes’ or `no’ answer. For example – “Tell me more about...” or, “How did you feel when that occurred?” If you need a subject to discuss, perhaps read a small story to your child, then ask hypothetical questions about what might happen next, or which character they liked. Older children can be involved in discussing national news events, or school activities. • Don’t speak for your child. Encourage children to speak for themselves. Have children place their own orders at restaurants. The practice of speaking to others in a clear voice is well worth the extra time that it may take to get your food. Encouraging and practicing public speaking will definitely allow your child to gain comfort with this important skill and turn their fear into a sense of pride and accomplishment.
