Dear Readers,
This issue marks the Sports & Activities Directory’s 15th Anniversary! It seems unfathomable that half of my adult years have been spent nurturing the growth of this publication. Like a child, I have been there for the infancy and toddler years and now, in the blink of an eye, it’s a high schooler! I’m excited to see what the future holds for this baby! In 2002, the Sports & Activities Directory printed it’s first edition in the City of Weston. A year later, Pembroke Pines was published. In 2007, Plantation launched it’s first edition. We then went on to grow licenses for Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches in 2012. That publication is celebrating its 5th Anniversary this issue! A big congratulations to its Publisher, Nikki Reading, for doing an amazing job! In 2013, the Coral Springs/Parkland Directory hit the streets and with the leadership of Publisher Kim Kadel, it has thrived as well! This slow and steady growth and maturity has yielded the only go-to directory for the active families in the cities where we publish. While the purpose and the backbone of the directory is to provide everything the reader wants to know about where, when and how to get involved in their community’s programs, there are so many aspects of the publications that our readers have come to love about the Sports & Activities Directory. Hundreds of new photos are included each quarter capturing the children and families in their activities. It gives us great pleasure to receive calls and emails about how excited the kids (and parents) are to be seen in the magazine! We feature athletes, coaches, teams and schools, letting the community know about their accomplishments. We go to great lengths to update each tidbit of information furthering our value with our readers and reaffirming our mission to be the ONLY single source of information for sports, events, camps, schools, activities, health and organizations. Taking that one step further, our distribution into the schools and backpacks has allowed us to keep our advertising prices competitively low and affords us the ability to donate to non-profit organizations, schools and youth scholarships instead of paying postage. The ultimate Win-Win! Over the years, we have learned how to make our directories more accessible through social media and through online, interactive versions of our directories (on our website www. sportsandactivities.com in magazine format). However, our proudest new development has been our Smart Phone App. Users are able access all of our information from all 5 publications at the tip of their fingers. Every league, program, school, park, advertiser, camp and organization is there with interactive mapping, clickable websites, phone numbers and social media pages. Our paid advertisers even get their own App within our App. Again, it is a Win-Win for everyone. Go to your app store and search Sports & Activities Directory, the download is FREE! So, what’s the next chapter in the life of the Sports & Activities Directory? Keep reading, keep letting our advertisers know you found them in our directory, and keep checking our App, website and social media for MORE, BETTER and THE BEST out of our awesome team! THANK YOU FOR 15 YEARS OF PUBLISHING YOUR DIRECTORY! My best to you,
Margot Puleri

ART IN THE PARK is an exciting event for all members of the community. For two days every fall, the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Foundation presents our annual arts festival in Liberty Tree Park in Plantation, Florida. Our 51st annual event is a two day festival to be held November 11th & 12th, 2017. In years past, the arts festival included a heavy community focus not only by providing an event to which the whole city looks forward to, but also including a student Art Search talent contest for local students, arts and crafts activities in our Kids Korner, and an opportunity for local groups to perform not only in our Kids Korner, but also on our main stage. This year ART IN THE PARK will feature craft beer, a wide variety of food vendors and wine tasting. An excellent reputation and extensive advertising make ART IN THE PARK one of the most popular events in Broward County. Visitors of all ages are attracted to the show, which is sure to draw even larger crowds than in years past. The City of Plantation took over the property adjoining Liberty Tree Park and has finished improvements to the area. We now have an expanded venue, which has enabled us to expand our event to include a separate craft section as well. Funds raised by ART IN THE PARK are returned to our community through our many projects. In years past, our net proceeds have
gone to local organizations such as Plantation High School Art Club, Helen B. Hoffman Library, Young at Art Children’s Museum (benefiting low-income Plantation children), and 4Kids of South Florida (their crisis facility, Safe Place is located in Plantation). Additionally, this event enables the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club to fund scholarships for four graduating Plantation area high school seniors. ART IN THE PARK is a unique event as it is organized and operated entirely by volunteers – PJWC members, their families and friends. Community volunteers also come forward to make it great. We strive to continuously improve the event each year in an effort to please the public. We feel strongly that the expanded venue will make this year’s event a tremendous success with our community. We will make every effort to attract the public to our festival and provide them with a first class event. To do this we rely greatly on the generous assistance of our sponsors. In previous years our media sponsors were WSVN7 and Clear Channel radio stations (News Radio 610, Fox Sports 940, Y-100 and BIG 106). Comcast has been our cable TV sponsor and the Sun Sentinel and their affiliates our exclusive newspaper sponsors. Other past sponsors have included SunTrust, American Express, Coke, Caldwell Banker, Rick Case Automotive Group and Plantation General Hospital/Westside Regional Center.

ou probably know about Rocky Balboa. You’ve probably seen the Bad News Bears’ movies and the misfits of the baseball diamond. Of course you know just last year the Chicago Cubs broke a 100 plus year drought by winning the World Series. Add one more team to your “impossible dream”realization, the 2017 Plantation Pressure 8U (8 years old and younger) Ladies Softball team. Buoyed by an enthusiastic Plantation crowd, the 8U Pressure played their hearts out and battled until the final out of the State of Florida Championship Tournament to earn the title of Co-State of Florida 8U Champions! The Pressure was within one out of claiming sole possession of the State title, but the Key West Lady Conchs rallied for 5 runs in the last inning to nip the Pressure 10-9 to force a winner take all final game. However, Mother Nature failed to cooperate and torrential rain, thunder and lightning forced a cancellation of that final game and the State officials decided to name Co-State Champions, the last two (2) teams surviving after every other team had been eliminated. It was an improbable run to the championship for the Pressure. During Pool Play to determine the actual seeding for the official State Championship Tournament, the Pressure lost both games and started in last place, giving them the most difficult schedule for the Championship run. The other teams in the tournament were probably looking forward to playing the Pressure in quest of the State Title, a big mistake! The PLO Bandits can certainly attest to that fact. The Bandits crushed the Pressure in Pool play 15-5. However, when it mattered most, the Pressure returned the favor by scorching the previously undefeated Bandits 17-4 and sending them to the Loser’s Bracket. The Pressure’s run to the championship included an 11-10 nailbiter over the Miami Stingrays 8U Black squad, followed by the lopsided victory over the Bandits, and then punctuated by an equally impressive 15-1 win over another undefeated team, the Key West Lady Conchs. As a result of those huge victories, the Pressure completed the winner’s bracket undefeated and waited for Key West to make its way
through the Loser’s bracket to face the Pressure once again. Coach Lisa Fernandes Hicks was extremely proud of her Pressure team. All 14 Pressure players contributed to what resulted in a true team victory. It was a different Pressure team that showed up for the main tournament from the one that finished pool play. It was as if Coach Lisa turned on a light switch from pool play to the games that really mattered. The Pressure swatted clutch hit after clutch hit. Ava Schneider began the hit deluge from the leadoff spot and her teammates followed girl after girl. Caitlyn Diaz and Presley Post pounded the ball to all fields. Grace Boehly banged out three (3) homeruns to lead the power surge, closely followed by McKenna Henschel, who also played a gold glove first base. Samantha Diaz played an incredible defensive left field, while adding big hit after big hit. Victoria Vasquez also contributed key hit after key hit, while playing an excellent third base. Stephany Roca played solidly in the field and notched several critical RBI’s, as did Eliana Croke and Addison Scwartzberg. Emma Konieczny did a great job catching (earning the Coach Lisa Award by catching a pop fly behind home plate) and at the bat. Finally, Tessa Bertsch, Taylor Curtis and Kelsey Fernandes, three (3) young ladies who have played on Coach Lisa’s Plantation Recreation teams the last three (3) years capped a fantastic team effort. Taylor added several important hits throughout the tournament. Tessa also chipped in numerous clutch hits while playing incredibly on defense at both second base and third base. Kelsey plugged the middle at pitcher by stopping ball after ball and catching anything around the mound to go along with an impressive offensive performance. Congratulations to the Florida State Co-Champion Plantation Pressure 8U players, parents, supporters and coaching staff, Coach Lisa, Coach Sharyn Henderson, Coach Dan Fernandes, Coach George Bertsch, and Coach Brett Boehly. For a team that has been together for only a little over a month and played in only its third tournament, this championship is an incredible accomplishment, the culmination of the “impossible dream”!

The student, beyond his formal artistic practice, focuses into their own spiritual interior, in order to obtain values that can be shared in their family and social environments. The practice environment is conceived under human basis, in a simple and warm place that inspires respect and well-being and where they will have the opportunity to recreate, educate and prepare for the arts, in a fun, fine, friendly way and so they can cultivate values of responsibility, respect, discipline, commitment and above all education. In thinking like that, the academy contributes to instill the values of humility and simplicity, as well as faith in ourselves. The student learns to demand discipline and technique that establishes him and in turn enjoys every day on stage with satisfaction that at the end shows that not only has learned the art he has chosen, but recreates and executes. The teaching method includes compliance and respect for the established rules are implemented both in the classroom and throughout the academy. Working on the emotional aspect of each student is a unique work promoting self-esteem. The student is given the fair value of their final learning so you can fully enjoy what he does. The
interaction between peers is an important human relationship required in order to achieve easily. Stimulation of cognitive development, enrichment and development of intelligence awakening new challenges between mind and body, make parallel the areas of attention, concentration, memory and spatial relationships work. This result is obtained when the student learns starting from the simple and everyday tasks until reaching the most complex. This teaching perspective applies to each genre that develops in the academy. When we speak of Ballet she is the mother of all dances, is the foundation of all dancer. The dancer has the opportunity to train to be classical only or to develop physically and get the best technical and artistic fulfillment of conditions in other genres of dance. The Jazz is a discipline that prevails in contemporary musical chronology and its varied styles makes it more exciting as it is lyrical, modern, Afro, commercial, urban and dance theater. The jitterbug is formed with personality, strength and full of vitality, making it a more comprehensive dancer. Pediatric Occupational Therapists (OTs) are life builders for children whose
lives have been raided by disability especially those with Autism and Cerebral Palsy. OTs assist these individuals to be free of their isolation, and help them to share their abilities with others. Osho says, “Nobody is superior, nobody is inferior, but nobody is equal either. People are simply unique. You are you, I am I.” OTs do not attempt to make clients like everyone else. We embrace their strengths, and work on the areas that are weakened which affect their everyday functioning. If a child has difficulty controlling his or her self-stimulating behaviors, we teach them how to satisfy that crave in supplementary ways so that it does not affect their functioning and those around them. We want them to share their uniqueness. If a child with Cerebral Palsy demonstrates impairments with his or her motor control and coordination skills which affect his or her activities of daily living including dressing, bathing, and social interaction skills, occupational therapist help remediate deficits and train clients and caregivers on compensatory techniques as needed in order to lead fulfilling lives. Various children with Autism may miss sensory information from the environment that provide signals about what is going on in their surroundings and may be referred to as having poor registration. The brain may not be getting what it needs to produce appropriate responses. Other children may be referred to as having seeking behavior. These individuals are characteristically active and continuously engaged in their environments. They add sensory input to every experience in daily life. They may appear impulsive and the consideration for safety when playing may be absent. Some children with Autism may display hypersensitivities to sounds, sights, smells, tastes, and textures. These children may have sensitivity behavior. They have over-reactive neural systems that make them aware of every stimulus that becomes available, and do not have the appropriate ability to adjust to these stimuli. Children may also present as having avoiding behavior which represent those who may engage in disruptive behaviors especially in situations where they know they are having difficulty with. They avoid circumstances by either withdrawing or participating in emotional outbursts that enable them to get out of the situation. The child may appear
stubborn and controlling and prefer routines without any sudden changes. The child is creating a state to limit sensory input to those events that are known and therefore easy for the nervous system to interpret. There is not a cookie-cutter treatment plan for these exceptional children. OTs provide the children and caregivers with individualized recipes (treatment plans) called a sensory diet with ingredients (tools) to assist the child to regulate his or her sensory system for success at home, school, and in the community. Children with Cerebral Palsy characteristically demonstrate deficits with reflex, body movement, muscle tone, balance, posture, muscle coordination, and receiving and responding to information through the senses. These complications can considerably impair a child’s ability to successfully participate in his or her activities of daily living including, dressing, feeding, sitting, standing, socializing, and much more. These limitations can lead to isolation. OTs encompass the skills necessary to improve their posture, reduce muscle tone and improve their range of motion. OTs will improve a child’s self-care skills, visual motor skills, handwriting skills, and the ability to navigate their environment. These skills are imperative to improve a child’s functional independence to replace isolation into inclusion. But, treatment does not end in the therapy clinic. A comprehensive home exercise and activities program and family education are vital to this process. OTs are knowledgeable in numerous areas in pediatric care. The focus is on improving a child’s functional independence. Through individualized treatment strategies and taking a family-centered approach, limitations can be altered into great expectations. atthew Futterman is the author of “Players: The Story of Sports and Money and the Visionaries Who Fought to Create a Revolution.” His 2016 book is a history of the changes that saw professional athletes go from modestly paid employees of the 1950s who needed off-season jobs, to today’s multimillionaire entrepreneurs building their “brands” with endorsements, clothing lines and other enterprises. So when Arnold Palmer, one of the first athlete-entrepreneurs, died in September 2016 at the age of 87, Futterman wrote a remembrance of the iconic golfer for the Wall Street Journal. Futterman began his essay with a question, then answered it:
50
What do you think about when you think about Arnold Palmer? This is what I think about: a measly life insurance policy that transformed the business of sports and made possible the flow of millions of dollars to modern athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and LeBron James. Here’s the rest of the story: In the winter of 1961, Arnold Palmer was a 31-year-old professional golfer who had won the Masters and U.S. Open the previous summer, and was just beginning to become a household name. Seven years previous, Palmer had signed (without legal counsel) what Futterman characterized as “an absurdly lopsided and exploitive” 10-year endorsement agreement with a sports equipment company. Now, in light of his performance and notoriety, Palmer wanted to renegotiate his contract, getting a larger percentage from the sale of balls and clubs that had his name on them. The sporting goods company agreed, but wanted to lock Palmer in for another 20 years. Palmer was okay with the length of the contract, but with a stipulation: He wanted a life insurance policy, and he wanted the company to pay for it. Futterman explains: He was 31-years-old, with two daughters and a wife to think about, and he knew he couldn’t stake his financial future on the paltry prize money available in golf in those days. Plus, he was well aware that few things were as impermanent as the career of a professional athlete. Sure, he was the defending Masters and U.S. Open champ, but the yips or a balky back could take it all away in a heartbeat.
Palmer wanted a benefit similar to those that corporations often give their key employees, an executive compensation agreement built around life insurance to provide a measure of financial security whether he lived, died or became disabled. Palmer felt he deserved such consideration because, while he might not be an executive, his involvement was a key component in the company’s success. The annual premium for the policy was $880 – about $7,000 today – adjusted for inflation, and not a lot of money then or now. At today’s rates, the premium would result in an insurance benefit of somewhere near $1 million, which is substantial, but not exorbitant. Amazingly, the sporting goods CEO refused, saying no golfer deserved something that most of the company’s executives didn’t even have. The CEO figured Palmer was in no position to turn down two decades of guaranteed income over something so small. But according to Futterman, “The life insurance policy was his line in the sand, the measure of whether this company that supposedly cared so much about him actually respected him as a professional.” Palmer broke off negotiations, and fulfilled the final three years of his original contract, and started a unique business relationship with Mark McCormack, the founder of International Marketing Group (IMG). With IMG’s guidance, Palmer produced his own line of golf equipment and apparel, designed golf courses, and became a celebrity pitchman for everything from motor oil to soft drinks. The IMG template that began with Palmer expanded from athletes to entertainers and completely changed the financial landscape of both fields. Sports and entertainment became “industries,” and the “stars” became entrepreneurs and business owners. This true story has several interesting takeaways regarding life insurance. Palmer recognized the tenuous nature of his income, and his long-term financial obligations to his family, and he saw permanent life insurance as a solution to those challenges. The executive compensation agreement idea Palmer proposed to satisfy his desire for life insurance is still used today by many companies to retain valuable talent. A lot of things have changed over the past six decades, but the essential form, function and value of life insurance has remained remarkably constant.

Going back to school after summer vacation can be a difficult adjustment for some. Here are some tips for helping manage that back to school anxiety. • • • •
• • •
Get back into a routine by implementing bedtimes, meal planning, and setting out clothes the night the before. Don‘t wait for the last minute to do school supply and new clothes shopping. Arrange play dates with school friends. Research shows that the presence of familiar peers during school transitions can improve children’s academic and emotional adjustment. Have a trial run. If your child is starting at a new school, walk through the school with them before school starts to help get acquainted. Mapping out classrooms and finding lockers in advance can help an older child, and for younger kids it can be helpful to rehearse the drop off and spend time on the playground. Validate and acknowledge your child’s anxiety. Talk about their fears and feelings. Make plans and role play dealing with anxiety-inducing situations. Have your child act out the part of a strict teacher or bullying classmate, and then model appropriate responses. Help manage your children’s commitments. Taking on many extracurricular activities before the school year starts can become overwhelming.

released 2017 school grades for all schools. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) results show continued improvements across the District. Among the highlights in the 2017 results: 96 percent of innovative District schools earned an “A,” “B” or “C.” • 95 percent of innovative District schools maintained or increased their letter grade. • 59 innovative District schools earned an “A”, an increase from 41 in 2016. Of these schools, 39 maintained their “A” from 2016. • 13 innovative District schools increased by two or more letter grades. • BCPS reduced the number of District schools earning a “D” or “F.” Only two District schools earned an “F,” compared to 10 in 2016. Six schools earned a “D,” compared to 29 the prior year. • Overall, BCPS earned a District grade of “B” for the fourth year in a row. In addition: • BCPS exceeded the state’s average for the percentage of “A” schools in 2017. • 85 percent of innovative District schools in the state’s “turnaround” status improved by one letter grade, with 82 percent earning a “C” or higher. “We are extremely proud of these accomplishments, which show continued improvement in academic achievement across our District. The school grades are the direct result of the hard work and tremendous dedication of our teachers, school leaders, students, families, staff members and the entire Broward
community,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “Our School Board members and I appreciate and thank everyone for their continued support, as we continue to focus on providing all students with a high-quality education and ensure we are meeting the diverse needs of students and families. We are continuing to analyze the results released today, as well as all of the data from the state assessments.” School grades are based on a variety of factors, including results from the Florida Standards Assessments and End of Course exams, levels of achievement, learning gains, industry certifications earned and graduation rates. The District’s overall grade also includes the performance of charter schools. To watch today’s news conference regarding BCPS school grades, visit https://eduvision.tv/l?yDRtAP.

he art of handwritten letters may seem archaic to this next current generation, however, two elementary schools in Plantation have revived this meaningful past-time thanks to the brainstorm and efforts of Barbara Clair Kettler and her toy poodle pet therapy service dog, Chessie, members of the Share-A-Pet organization and the Pawsitive Reading Program. In collaboration with the principals and teachers, two second grade classes, one from Tropical Elementary and another from Peters Elementary partnered together to be pen pals. Students wrote letters back and forth to each other every week throughout the school year. The letters were read to and then and then delivered by Ms. Barbara and Chessie. The kids all loved it and so did each of the respective teachers, Iris Friedman (Peters) and Joan Zucker (Tropical). “We all love Chessie and Ms. Barbara and looked forward to their visits each week. We knew that when Chessie came to our class, we would get a letter from our pen pal and we were so excited to read the letter and share it with our classmates and then write back to our pen pals,” said Ms. Friedman. Writing letters not only improved the students’ handwriting, but also improved spelling, sentence structure, illustration, grammar and reading. Added bonuses that came with the pen pal program were improved communication skills with someone unknown, as well as imaginative and cognitive skills to try to identify and relate to their pen pal. It was hands-on learning that was worked into their 2nd grade literacy block doing an activity they loved! “It was so amazing watching the children enjoy the writing process as they got to know their new friends. For my students it proved how powerful writing can be. Now they love writing letters and want to do it every chance they get!” said Ms. Zucker. As the end of the year neared, the two classes knew their letters would stop and the chance of ever meeting their pen pals was dwindling. Ms. Friedman took the initiative to write a grant to the Peters PTA requesting a school bus and driver to facilitate a meet and greet field trip and funds for a pizza party. It was approved and the day with activities was planned. On May 30th, the bus with the Peters Elementary students arrived at Tropical Elementary and they were greeted by Ms. Barbara and Chessie, Tropical principal Erik Anderson, Assistant Principal Terie Miranda and Peters principal Dr. Joyce Krzemienski (formerly the assistant principal at Tropical). The students were paraded through the front office and stopped for a group photo in Mr. Anderson’s office, and then they were led to the classroom where their pen pals were eagerly awaiting their arrival! On each of the desks were folded, elaborately decorated, tented cards welcoming each of their pen pals from Peters Elementary.
By Margot Lyons Puleri
At last they met, talked and laughed together, exchanging their last letter of the year! “I was a little shy when I first met Olivia. We hugged each other and it was really cool to meet in person. I got to know what she liked through her letters and then we learned more about each other in person,” said Peters student, Rachel M. Afterward, the students took a walking tour of Tropical Elementary led by Mr. Anderson and Dr. K, showing the students the Sunflowers which were planted by students and the butterfly garden before culminating in a pizza party back in the classroom. They had a lot of fun getting to know about each other and playing together after lunch. “It was interesting to see where Charlotte went to school. Charlotte is just like me! I’m glad to have a really awesome pen pal,” said student Lia F. Many of the pen pals exchanged addresses and phone numbers (with their parents’ approval), set up play dates for the summer and planned to keep writing each other! “I face-timed with Christopher that afternoon when we got home from school. We talked about Pokemon cards,” said Peters student, Nicholas L. Students were also encouraged to keep a summer pen pal diary that will be delivered to their pen pals at the start of the next school year. Iris Friedman prepared composition books which Ms. Barbara picked up and delivered one final time on Tuesday. Kudos to the efforts of Barbara Clair Kettler and the Share-A-Pet therapy organization who spear headed this educational and fun program! Ms. Barbara is a retired elementary school teacher who began training Chessie to become a pet therapy dog in 2008. With her education background and pet therapy work, she and Chessie made a natural transition to become part of the Pawsitive Reading Program at Tropical Elementary in 2010. Initially, this involved working with a few students at a time to improve their reading skills and included letter writing to Chessie, who always wrote back. It has now has evolved into working with entire classes from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. As a testament to the “positive” results, the Pawsitive Reading has grown to include many other owner/pet reading teams at Tropical as well as Peters Elementary schools. “This was beyond my wildest dreams! Could not have planned it better and everyone did such a wonderful job of coordinating this. We already have teachers from both schools stepping up to be part of the pen pal program next school year. We just can’t wait to get started!” said Ms. Barbara. hange is the only constant in the universe. As parents we intuitively understand this, because raising our children is a series of progressive changes. Each change is more amazing than the last. The mileposts in our child’s development are all changes. Our babies respond to our voices, and we respond to their cries. We smile at our babies and they return the smile. We speak to them and before they can form words they try to reply. On one very important day our baby speaks his first word. Our baby learns to sit up, crawl and eventually walk, and is longer a baby. These changes are how we measure our child’s development. Transitions – stopping one activity and starting up a new one - can be difficult for toddlers. One of the reasons transitions are hard for your toddler is because he has a Zen concept of time: there is only the now and the future does not exist. Try telling your toddler that he can play later, but right now you have to go to the grocery store, or he can have a cookie later! Developmentally the problem is twofold: initially toddlers don’t understand that when Mommy takes him to preschool for the first time that Mommy will be coming back, and they don’t have the verbal skills yet to communicate their fears. That can lead to anxiety, tears and outbursts. Change and new beginnings can be challenging for children and their parents, but parents can help ease our child’s separation anxiety when they begin preschool. I know: I am a parent, teacher and now a director, and I did
it all wrong before I knew better. Learn from my mistakes. Our children are very sensitive to our moods, so if your child senses your anxiety about the first day of school, he will be anxious too. Walk your son to class, give him a kiss – you may want to develop a ritual- “Mommy will give you three butterfly kisses when you start school and I will always come back and give you three butterfly kisses after your nap when school is over.” It is natural to cry, but don’t cry until you have turned away. When you leave, fight the urge to peek in the window because long goodbyes are more painful and create a sense of uncertainty in your toddler. Whether you are managing employees, clients or toddlers, the most important thing is to set expectations. Use simple words and explain to your child, for example, “After your nap (or lunch) Mommy will be here to take you home.” You may want to develop a routine at home before leaving for school. Rather than announcing that you are leaving in ten minutes because toddlers do not have a sense of time, let her set a timer for ten minutes every day. Tell her, “Every day before you go to school you and Mommy have things to do. We both have breakfast, use the potty, get dressed and then you play until you hear the timer ring. Then we put away your toys, put on your shoes, and go to school together.” Teachers are very effective at helping with transition. Talk to your child’s teacher and ask her to work with you by reading a book or singing a song when they arrive to establish an arrival routine. Ask your teacher to remind your child that “Mommy always comes back after your lunch or nap”. You may want your child to bring a “lovey”, a favorite stuffed animal from home. Change is growth and our children will be changing and growing for a long time. Working together we can help ease the anxiety and share the joy.

with great pride that I welcome you to the 2017/18 school year. We are excited for the first day of classes on Monday, August 21, 2017. Our District’s commitment to excellence in education continues to make BCPS a national leader. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked 19 of the District’s high schools among the best in the nation, and The Washington Post recognized 25 BCPS schools in its report on America’s Most Challenging High Schools. In addition, our District recently received two impressive designations. BCPS earned prestigious Districtwide re-accreditation from AdvancEd, signifying to the community that our District is meeting the highest standards in education. Our District was also named a Great District for Great Teachers by the National Council on Teacher Quality – a true testament to our amazing teachers and our dedication to providing students with high-quality instruction. Our innovative District schools offer incredible learning opportunities and focus on ensuring all students are college and career ready. BCPS offers a wide variety of programs to meet students’ interests and help them develop a lifelong love of learning. We are engaging students in ways that motivate them to learn and excel, with rigorous academic courses; award-winning magnet and innovative programs; dual language programs to promote biliteracy and academic achievement; and chess for second grade students to develop their critical thinking skills. We are reimagining education with an emphasis on offering a variety of academic enrichment programs and elective courses at every level. We know that technology is a critical part of 21st century learning. Our schools now have more computers and technology resources to support our students’ education. Through the District’s SMART bond technology initiative, more than 83,300 new computer devices are now installed in our schools, bringing the District’s student to computer ratio to an average of 2:1, an even lower ratio than the original goal of 3.5:1. The installation of the new computers was completed ahead of schedule and under budget – and the new computers are ready for students in 2017/18.
In the upcoming school year, BCPS continues to focus on technology in the classroom to support instruction. BCPS will: • Expand our Digital Classrooms initiative, which provides personalized, blended learning environments with a one-to-one student to computer ratio. Across BCPS, schools participating in this unique program will reach more students as the program grows to include additional grade levels and classrooms. • Increase the number of schools offering the Global Scholars program to 19 schools. This program connects BCPS students with their peers around the world as they share information and learn about cultures and important global issues. • Launch new opportunities for students to participate in computer science courses. Beginning this year, middle school students at 24 schools can now take a high school level computer science course through our partnership with Code.org. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities continue to be offered at 100 percent of our schools. BCPS also offers the largest debate and JROTC programs in the country; opportunities for students to earn industry certifications in numerous career industries; advanced academic programs allowing students to earn college credits; virtual education options; Montessori programs; and award-winning music and arts programs. Our schools also provide outstanding athletic programs, with sports expanding in our middle schools in 2017/18 to include golf and cross country. Our schools are preparing students for their futures and inspiring them to follow their dreams. As we look forward to the 2017/18 school year and beyond, I encourage you to learn more about our District – and all that our schools offer – by visiting our website, browardschools.com. On behalf of our teachers, administrators and staff, we hope students enjoyed the summer break and are ready for another successful school year! Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education.

The poster presentation, “Bringing the Classroom to the Science” joined Baldwin with his supervising professor, Dr. Brian Benscoter. “I hope that more students will follow in this program. It has been an excellent way for me work hands-on with scientific experts, Baldwin said. “I

T
he timing couldn’t be better for this laughout-loud book to hit the stores as the new school year begins! “Class Mom”, a novel by Laurie Gelman, will absolutely tickle the funny bone of any parent who has dabbled or immersed themselves in volunteering at their school. Filled with sarcasm, irreverence and hilarious casual commentary, you cannot put this book down. Gelman delivers a diverse cast of fictional characters, yet as their personalities and quirks unfold, you will identify each one with someone you know or perhaps catch a glimpse of yourself. A little over a year ago, Laurie was just finishing her second attempt at a novel when we had a chance to catch up. After many decades
of not seeing each other (we went to high school together), I was lucky enough for her to share her rough draft of “Class Mom” with the thought that I might be able to provide some constructive feedback. After breezing through it in a day, I just simply commented, “Hilarious!” Inspired by raising two daughters in New York City schools where volunteering is mandatory, Laurie found great humor in the idiosyncrasies of her co-volunteers, as well as herself, in these roles. Dealing with fundraisers, student allergies, cooperative communication with uncooperative volunteers, teachers, and a few surprises along the way keeps the main character, Jen Dixon, with plenty of material for comedy. Her humor,
sarcasm and ways of getting things done may be lost on the class parents, but definitely not on the readers. Jen’s “fresh” take on her Kindergarten class mom role is based on the fact that she already went through the parenting rodeo with her two daughters who are now in their 20’s. Flash forward 15 years, and now Jen has a 5-year old son, Max. You’ve got the gist, older moms see things a bit differently than younger, first-time moms. Look for Laurie Gelman on a “Class Mom” book tour and likely on a few talk shows, she’s got a connection or two hundred there (as you will see in About the Author). “Class Mom” was released on Amazon.com on August 1st and will surely be the buzz for all of us moms as school resumes.
Bergeron, worked on Good Morning America and the CBS Early Show. Working in the entertainment industry led Laurie to her husband, Michael Gelman, the executive producer of Live with Kelly and Ryan (originally Live with Regis and Kathie Lee). Laurie and Michael married in June, 2000, and have two daughters Jamie (age 16) and Misha (age 13). Once Laurie became a mom, she found a perfect fit to balance career and parenting on two separate Canadian-based talk shows, The Mom Show and Doctor in the House. Currently, she is a freelance writer and novelist while doing what she loves most, raising her daughters. They live in Manhattan and spend time in Plantation, Florida and The Hamptons, New York.

aurie Hibberd Gelman was born in 1964 in Ottawa Canada, however, she was raised right here in the Plantation area and is an alumni of American Heritage School. After high school, she went to Ryerson University in Toronto and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Laurie’s professional career started in broadcasting as a news writer, traffic reporter, entertainment reporter for CKFM radio in Toronto. In the early 90‘s, Laurie returned to South Florida; you may remember her as “The Buzz” entertainment reporter for WSVN-TV in Miami. As her career continued to blossom, she co-hosted the Fox After Breakfast talk show on Fox network with Tom
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS? Hmm...easy...the birth of my girls, converting to Judaism, and taking a hard core, self defense class are the top three things I have ever done.
HAND WRITE OR COMPUTER OR BOTH? I hand wrote for years and years, but now that I finally write on a computer, I can’t go back!

WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR READERS TO WALK AWAY WITH WHEN THEY FINISH “CLASS MOM”? A few laughs and the belief that I should win the Pulitzer Prize for humor! Actually, just a few laughs is good.
ANY ADVICE TO NEW MOM VOLUNTEERS? Take notes! It’s ripe with comedic possibilities. But seriously, definitely get involved, but have your boundaries in place. The PTA can smell new blood a mile away and they will suck you dry if you let them.

WHEN DID THE INSPIRATION FOR THE BOOK COME ABOUT? ANY CATALYST THAT SAT YOU DOWN TO WRITE IT? After a failed attempt at a children’s book my agent suggested I write about the one thing I was constantly complaining about - my job as class mom for my daughter’s 3rd grade class. I didn’t realize how much I talked about it until he pointed it out.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER IN “CLASS MOM”? My most favorite character to write is Jen. Her inner dialogue is hilarious and she is flawed, but fun. My least favorite is Kim Fancy. She represents far too many mothers that I actually know and don’t admire.
AS FAR AS WRITING A NOVEL, IT SEEMS DAUNTING TO TAKE A STORY IDEA TO A PUBLISHED BOOK. DID YOU ENJOY THE PROCESS? They say the joy is in the journey and for me, it really was. Once I figured out that I was going to have to treat this like a job or I would never finish, it became as much a part of my day as making dinner or taking a shower. I knew that for better or worse I had to sit down for at least 2 hours every day and either write or rewrite. And just like any job, some days were good and some days were bad. It took about 2 years to write it and another year to make the changes the publisher wanted and have it transformed into a book. The hardest part was being told I had to add another plot line into my perfectly finished book. I tore my hair out for about 4 months trying to make that happen...and I finally did.
ARE YOU PLANNING ANY BOOK SIGNINGS OR INTERVIEWS? Book tour is coming - not sure where or when, but you can be damned sure I will be on at least one daytime talk show or there will be no joy in Gelmanville tonight.
WHAT VOLUNTEER ROLES IN YOUR KIDS’ SCHOOLS DID YOU ACTUALLY DO? Well, I was class mom for five years. I volunteered for the book fair a few years in a row. I was snack mom many, many times. I’ve sold sportswear at Homecoming, chaperoned numerous field trips and was co-chair of the school’s annual fund raiser... twice. Oh, I was also in charge of the 120 gifts for the 6th grade Greek Festival. ARE MORE BOOKS OF LIKE STYLE ROLLING AROUND IN YOUR HEAD? Actually, I’m writing the sequel to Class Mom right now (not that anyone has asked for it). I had more to say about my hero, Jen, and her life and wanted to get it down on paper. I had been writing a more serious book, but I took a break because it was really getting me down. Getting back to the “Class Mom” characters is like being at a reunion with old friends. HAVE YOUR KIDS READ THE BOOK? WHAT ARE THEIR COMMENTS? My older one, Jamie, read it and really loved it although I don’t think she understood many of the pop culture references (“Mom, who is Michael Hutchence?”). My younger one, Misha really wants to, but I’m holding her off for now. She doesn’t need to know how snarky I really am just yet. DID MICHAEL GIVE FEEDBACK DURING THE PROCESS? Michael never asked to read it until it was finished. When he did, his comment was, “This is actually really good.” High praise from Gelman. Since then he has been my number one PR agent. He talks about “Class Mom” to whoever will listen. Luckily, a lot of people listen to him.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE IN PLANTATION? Shop! I’m obsessed with Sawgrass. I get there right at 8am when Target opens, continue on to Starbucks and wait for Off Fifth to open. It’s my happy place. I also like to spin at Cycle Bar and head to Dania Beach sometimes. We love Anthony’s Pizza and the BBQ place formerly known as Scruby’s. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND THINGS YOU DO IN YOUR DOWN TIME? I enjoy working out a lot. Its great thinking time and keeps me healthy. I spin, do pilates and yoga. I also live in one of the best walking cities in the world, so I do a lot of that, too. I enjoy reading when I’m not trying to write, and Michael and I collect wine. And who am I kidding? I Netflicks and chill all the time. My latest obsession is The Crown. WHAT ABOUT PLANTATION MAKES YOU WANT TO KEEP A HOME HERE? Plantation is amazing. It’s such a great community, no matter how big it gets. It brings back wonderful memories of my younger years. If I’m driving down Peters Rd. with my radio tuned to 80’s on 8, I can almost pretend I’m still in high school...almost. DO YOU WANT TO GIVE ANY PROPS TO AMERICAN HERITAGE OR TEACHERS? I actually loved my time at American Heritage. The school was small so the teachers really got to know all the students. Shout out to Mrs. Nocerini, Mrs. Israel, Coach Holmquist, Coach Murtha, Mrs. Cole and Doc Hrinko, may he rest in peace. TO WHOM IS YOUR BOOK DEDICATED? The book is dedicated to Michael and the girls because, let’s face it, if it weren’t for them, I would never have been a class mom.

he Culpepper Journalism Foundation honors Anna Winslow, a South Plantation High junior, with a stipend to attend the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications (CJC) Summer Media Institute in June 2017. Over the last 20 years, the CJF has awarded more than $40,000 for high school journalists to attend summer university programs. “After attending the UF program, I hope to have a better understanding of journalistic writing to help my fellow staff members improve the quality of their writing as some have trouble grasping the style of writing found in journalism,” Winslow said. “Although design, photography and organization are important in any publication, I feel writing is truly the foundation for communication.” For two years she has been on The Sword and Shield newspaper staff, and currently is the Features Editor. Adviser Stephanie Polin said Winslow has “exhibited polished writing and solid reporting with a professionalism far
beyond her years.” Winslow will be the 2017-18 Editor-in-Chief. Winslow said her most challenging story this year was about Donald Trump’s first few weeks in office. “Regardless of my personal political views, I knew that as a journalist, it was my job to approach the article objectively,” she said. “Through writing this article, I learned how difficult is to write about political topics and how important it is to explain both aides of the story.” In addition to her journalism duties, Winslow is the current district champ of girls’ tennis, is a classically trained pianist and has been honored as a member of the Environmental Science and Everglades magnet program for several years. A stipulation of the fellowship is that the winners must return to their high schools to be mentors to their classmates. More information can be found at CulpepperJournalismFoundation.Weebly.com as well as the Culpepper Journalism Foundation Facebook page.

SCHOOLS I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017/18 school year! Across our District, there are incredible learning opportunities for students of all ages. Whether a student is new to our schools or returning for another successful school year, we are excited about the many educational experiences that are ahead this year. As a countywide School Board member, I am honored to serve the diverse families of our District as we focus on educating all students to reach their highest potential. Our District’s strategic emphasis on early learning and literacy is paving the way for student achievement at all levels. With rigorous academic options, magnet and innovative programs, dual language programs, and career and technical education courses offering industry certifications – as well as nationally recognized performing and visual arts programs, outstanding athletics, and an array of enrichment activities – there is something for everyone. Ensuring we are meeting students’ individual needs is important for our District, and, as a former special education teacher, is a topic close to my heart. With our “Just Do It…I Did!” awards program, we celebrate the exemplary achievements of students with disabilities and through the District’s Autism in Flight program, students with Autism Spectrum Disorder receive unique opportunities to practice airport travel,
with the goal of reducing stress on actual flights. Social and emotional learning is also a priority in our schools. We understand that students need support in learning how to manage their emotions, achieve their goals, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Through our social and emotional learning initiative, we are fostering positive learning environments and helping our students be successful in school and beyond as they develop into responsible citizens of our community. Social and emotional learning also has a major impact on our students’ mental and behavioral health by reducing risky behaviors and substance abuse issues, and increasing awareness about suicide prevention. This year, our District received tremendous support from state lawmakers across our area, led by State Senator Gary Farmer, for securing $200,000 in funding for our suicide prevention efforts. This funding will provide additional training, support and educational resources for our students and staff. The health, safety and welfare of our students are always our priorities – and this funding is an investment in creating brighter futures for our students. As a proud parent of two children, including a recent Broward County Public Schools graduate, it is wonderful to see the incredible educational opportunities in our schools and the excitement of our students as they prepare to head back to class! Together, let’s make it a great year!
BCPS AWARDED $227,000 GRANT TO INCREASE ROBOTICS INSTRUCTION AND RESOURCES IN SCHOOLS B
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is honored to be selected for a grant by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation and NASA, which will provide robotics equipment, materials and teacher professional development for all District schools. The grant, valued at approximately $227,000, will be implemented over the next four years.
During the 2017/18 school year – the first year of the grant – the new robotic equipment and resources will enhance STEM+Computer Science (STEM+C) opportunities currently offered at 57 schools across the District, including 36 elementary schools, 12 middle schools and nine high schools. Additional schools will be added each year of the grant. The focus is on aligning robotics instruction among feeder schools within the District’s Innovation Zones, to provide seamless opportunities for students to build upon their skills as they transition from elementary school to middle and high schools. Early introduction to STEM+C, including robotics, is the foundation of the District’s ongoing #BrowardCODES initiative, which is dedicated to building a strong computer
science community within BCPS. Computer science courses, curriculum and activities are now offered in 100 percent of District schools, thanks to support from partners such as Code.org, the National Science Foundation, Google and the Broward Education Foundation. In 2016, the White House also recognized BCPS for its commitment to increasing computer science in schools. “We are incredibly excited to be chosen by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and NASA for this grant,” said Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, STEM+C supervisor with the District’s Applied Learning Department. “The funding supports our efforts to expand opportunities for students to experience and learn about computer science, and understand how the skills they are learning can be utilized in many different career paths.” To learn more about the REC Foundation and NASA grant, contact Dr. Lisa Milenkovic, BCPS Applied Learning Department, at 754-321-1851. Additional information on the #BrowardCODES initiative is available at browardschools.com/browardcodes.

INTERVIEW WITH A HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER STUDENT Milton R., 5th Grader at Sawgrass Elementary
H
ow long have you been coming to Huntington? How many days a week do you come and for how long? a- I have been coming to Huntington for about 3 months. During the summer, I have been coming for 4 days per week (3 hours per day). What do you do here at Huntington that is different than what you do in class or when you do homework? a- Huntington actually teaches me how to study in a way I can understand and use. When you first came to Huntington, what specifically did you want or need help with? a- I feel like the biggest thing I needed help with is study skills, writing, and comprehension. Was there any specific way Huntington made things easier to learn? Explain. a- How to pull out information properly, what to underline, skills to use to keep things in your brain, to be able to understand things more clearly. It is easier to remember things I need for tests. My grades are going up and I feel smarter. How do you like your instructor/tutor at Huntington? What is the best thing about him/her? a- I think my teachers are pretty good. They are nice, funny, and help me understand what I read better.
What do you think you want to be when you grow up? Is school important to do that? What subjects do you think you need to study to do that job? a- I want to be a scientist when I grow up. School is important for that because you need math, along with science. Based on how you have improved your learning at Huntington, do you think other kids should get the same kind of help? a- Yes, because it helped me get good grades and they should be able to, too. Do you think that being a better learner and student makes you happier? Why? a- Yes, because you can achieve more. Are you worried about harder classes in the next grade? a- Yes, but I can do it Thinking back to when you first started at Huntington, have you changed from then until now? How? a- Yes, because I’m getting better grades when I take tests. Mom, how have you seen the change in your son’s life? a- Mom’s answer: You can tell his comprehension is so much stronger now, even in just his daily conversations. Milton is also much more proactive than he used to be. He is scoring higher in everything he does. He got 5’s on his FSA (Florida Sunshine Assessment) and scored at the top of the entire school!
