Dear Readers, What’s so great about summer camp? From my experience, and from the many years of publishing a child-oriented directory geared to getting kids involved in sports, activities, clubs, camps and schools, summer camp is FUN! Summer camps encourage kids to make new friends, be creative, play outdoors, try new activities, and gain confidence without the pressure to be the best. Specialty camps can take a new interest and turn it into a life long passion. The more typical outdoor activities and travel camps bolster a healthy and active lifestyle while putting the camper in a variety of positive, team-oriented social situations. Whichever type of camp most appeals to your child, know that there are so many great friendships and memories that will be made. Anything more than that is icing on the cake! When my kids were the perfect camp age, we spent two summers on the road playing in and coaching a girl’s travel softball team. There were enormous costs involved, a lot of pressure put on the girls, and although some fun was had by all, it burned all of us out. We decided as a family that this was not something we wanted to pursue. The following summer, I put them in a tennis camp with an entirely new group of kids. Both of them thrived! They learned a sport without pressure in a positive environment. They made new friends, some of which they still keep in touch with. But most importantly, they had FUN. Ahhh…those were the days. My kids are now 23 and 20 and, as of February, I am officially an empty nester. I look back and realize how important those easy, breezy, fun summer camps were and how they helped them grow into more confident, well-adjusted, happy adults. For the younger kids, summer should be the time to step away from the homework, testing, cramming, all-star, travel, over scheduled, over worked and exhausted keep up with the Jones’ mentality. Just let them have FUN and enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces. With that being said, we have a vast array of camp choices for you that include acting in a musical, traveling to water parks, sleep-away camps, horseback riding, robotics building, language immersion, gymnastics, sports and swimming to name a few. Take a few minutes to go through the Summer Camp directory with your kids. Find out what they really want to do. I bet they will say, “I just want to have FUN!” As a reminder, this directory is made possible by our advertisers. Please remember to let them know you saw them in the pages of the Sports & Activities Directory! A special Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to all of you parents out there! I can tell you first hand that childhood goes by all too quickly, so make the most of the time you have with your children. Put the phone down, turn the computer, TV and video games off, eat dinner together and talk. You will learn a lot about your kids! My best to you, Margot

AROUND TOWN

I

t takes a special person to be the voice of a neglected or abused child in the foster care system. You must be compassionate, yet assertive, curious, but not judgmental and encouraging without being unrealistic. These are some of the characteristics those interested in signing up to become a Guardian ad Litem should possess. The Guardian ad Litem Program of Broward County has been changing children’s lives in South Florida since 1983. Originally founded by Judge David Soukup of Seattle in 1977, the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program, known as the Guardian ad Litem Program in Florida, came to use a team approach to represent children in dependency proceedings. The staff, along with volunteers from the community, works to help children find loving, permanent homes. This includes attending court to testify on the child’s behalf, visiting the child and his or her family, and working with the Department of Children and Families and other community partners to provide recommendations pertaining to the best interest of the child. GAL of the year, Griselda Hale, has been involved in the program for over 19 years. She gave a very powerful and heartfelt response when she was recently asked why she decided to volunteer as a Guardian. “My children were grown and both had moved away for college. I decided since the Universe had been so gentle with me, it was time to return the favor to others in a similar way.” As of right now, there are a little over 3,600 children in Broward County in the care of the Department of Children and Families and only about 700 volunteer Guardians. There are many volunteers who bravely take on more than one case and cases that involve siblings. However, there are still over 300 children that have not been appointed a Guardian, and while these numbers are not ideal, there is still hope for the current cases and the future of the children involved. This became even more apparent to me after speaking to Maruja Marin. Maruja is a remarkable success story, to say the least. She was transferred from one broken home to another, with little hope for a normal childhood or adolescence. That is until she was paired with her GAL. “My GAL was like a mom to me. She was extremely helpful and supportive from day one.” At the time, Maruja was dealing with obstacles that many children her age face while attending school and coping with her family life at home. However, in addition to these challenges, she didn’t speak English. She insists that without the help of her GAL, she would not be where she is today. “We immediately clicked. I remember her telling me, ‘Only God knows why you are going through this.’ Every cry I had was with her.” Today, Maruja is a successful businesswoman who has purchased and now runs a growing insurance

company and has two children of her own. She still thanks her GAL for always being there to support her and never complaining about doing so. Success stories like these are what inspire others to serve and give back to their community. But in order to achieve such positive outcomes, there must be more volunteers willing to donate their time. “The most challenging aspect of being a Guardian is that everyone is overworked,” says Alan Garber. Alan has only been part of the program for a few months now, but he has already witnessed the positive impact he himself had on a small group of kids at a recent visit to a local shelter. “It’s impossible not to get attached to these kids. They are so grateful for any amount of time a positive role model is able to spend with them.” And you don’t have to be a doctor, a lawyer or even a CPA such as Alan to volunteer. The most common misconception is that having an abundance of disposable income is the key factor to being able to serve. This simply isn’t true. Each Guardian ad Litem has something unique to offer whether they originally knew it or not. For Alan, it’s juggling. He uses this talent as an icebreaker with the kids and quickly gets (and holds) their attention with this fun and entertaining pastime. In addition to the entertainment factor, studies show that three-ball cascade juggling increases activity in the occipitotemporal cortex, contributing to the processes relevant to learning. So you may be asking yourself, how can I get involved? According to Griselda, “All you need is an open mind, an open heart and no expectations of what you may or may not accomplish.” Of course, due to the sensitive nature of the majority of these cases, additional education and guidance is required. After a pre-screening interview and level II background check, volunteers must complete 30 hours of additional training: 28 classroom hours and 2 courtroom hours. Once the training requirements have been met and personal references have been contacted, the individual is certified, matched with a volunteer supervisor and agrees to service for a minimum of one year. GALs must be 21 years of age or older, however, there are volunteer opportunities for college students who are 19 years of age or older, and high school students over the age of 16 are encouraged to sign up for other opportunities to meet their required community service hours. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month as well as National Volunteer Month. What better way to celebrate both than by becoming a Guardian ad Litem? You can be the voice of a child who may not currently have one. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said it best; “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” For more information on how you can become a Guardian ad Litem, visit www.galbroward.org or call (954) 831-6214.

e all have different motivations for making the choice to begin our multisport lifestyle. Mine started after running a marathon years ago and just wanted something more. Others have been motivated by weight loss (some really extreme!). Yet, a few want to prove that Anything is Possible.

24

While toeing the start line of an endurance event might be the beginning of your individual race journey, training to get there doesn’t have to be a solo effort. With the support and camaraderie of a triathlon club, you can enhance the voyage to the finish and gain like-minded friends along the way. Not sure a club environment is right for you? Read on, and doubt no more.

ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

Whether you’re just starting out or consistently topping the podium, clubs have something for everyone. Newbies gain confidence and valuable tips of the trade, while speed demons have a group to challenge their fast-twitch muscles. And with clubs available for any age (kids through masters), membership can truly be a family affair.

NEVER FINISH ALONE

While race day is about individual effort, sporting your team’s colors brings a flash of spirit and inspiration. Hearing the cheers of teammates on course provides a boost to carry you through the miles ahead, and after crossing the finish line, trading war stories makes victory feel even sweeter.

TRAINING PARTNERS GALORE

Say goodbye to solitary sweat sessions and dive into group workouts. Triathlon clubs have no shortage of athletes looking to head out for a brick (bike and run sequence) workout or an open water swim. As an added bonus, organized workouts and scheduled partner training helps boost accountability to push beyond your limits.

GEAR GURUS

Looking for a recommendation on a reliable GPS watch, fast wheels or energy gels? Don’t fret; just ask around. It’s no secret that triathletes love the latest gear. Belonging to a triathlon club means you’ll have access to real-life gear testers with firsthand product experience. You’ll never have to make a purchase again without consulting fellow racers.

By Matthew “Ironmatt” Hert

EXPERIENCE ADVANTAGE

Are you searching for a race with incredible scenery or one with no hills? A group of triathletes brings a variety of race experiences to the table. Picking the brains of peer racers means you’ll be able to make the best registration decision based on your strengths and preferences. Ready to join a club, but not sure where to begin? Florida, with its ideal weather, is a mecca for triathletes and there are many fun and thriving clubs in the state. One of the most recent is the newly formed Fort Lauderdale Triathletes. With successful clubs to the north and south, FLT was formed to perpetuate a healthy lifestyle, through the collaboration of Multi-Sport athletes. It is based on a culture of inclusion, support, and fellowship, through training, racing, and social interaction. In only one season, it has grown to 75 athletes strong thanks to support of the membership and its generous sponsors. Fort Lauderdale Triathletes is an official USAT (USA Triathlon) and IRONMANTM TriClub team. Its members enjoy regular clinics/ socials and “voluncheering” for each other and the tri-community at large. All members receive discounts from the sponsors and on select endurance races. If you live in the greater Fort Lauderdale area or visit often, we invite you to check out what FLT has to offer. Find the club on the web at www.fltri.com or on Facebook (Fort Lauderdale Triathletes). Matthew Hert is a long-time age group triathlete and one of the founders of the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes living in the Coral Springs area.

heerleading has evolved over the years. Today’s teams are comprised of some of the most talented athletes. Routines can be very challenging and include jumps, partner stunts, pyramids, tumbling and more. At Florida Triple Threat All-Stars, students learn to excel in all areas of cheerleading and dance. Coaches also make sure that the girls have fun, while learning life lessons and skills that will last a lifetime. Tryouts for the upcoming season will be held on May 14. “Florida Triple Threat All-Stars is a lot more than just competitive cheerleading,” said Amanda Davies, Coach, Trainer and Community Service Director. “We focus on the development of our students both inside and outside of the gym. In addition to developing their athleticism, we help them develop as a person and a teammate. We instill values and morals that our students can take with them long after their cheerleading careers, such as loyalty, discipline, hard work, confidence, and integrity.” Triple Threat’s program offers a wide range of levels from level 0 to level 5, which is the highest level in cheerleading. It offers tumbling classes and private lessons for every level. This season, there were seven competitive teams in levels 1, 2, 3, and 5 in the Mini, Youth, Junior, and Senior age divisions. All of the Triple Threat coaches are AACCA safety certified and USASF certified. Three of them are competition judges within the industry. “The coaches and staff are passionate about what they do,” said Davies. “This sport is their livelihood, so the success of the athletes, teams, and program as a whole is important to them.” Although competition season is only January through April, joining a competitive team requires a full year commitment from both the athletes and parents. Since cheerleading is a team sport, the whole team must be in attendance in order to structure routines and prepare for competitions. “We strongly believe that our success originates from the dedication and commitment of our athletes and parents,” said Davies. “Parents want their kids to be successful and so do we, but this requires dedication.

Students that succeed at Triple Threat are the ones willing to learn and take correction constructively, which is a huge part of being an athlete.” Teams travel to competitions on most weekends throughout the season and practice during the months prior. Most of the competitions are in Orlando; however, teams typically also attend three out-of-state competitions in places such as Dallas, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. There are also non-traveling teams for those who are not able to travel. Since Triple Threat opened seven years ago, some of its accolades have included: two-time Jamfest Super National Champions, 2012 NCA National Champions, Summit Bid Winner, three-time World’s Bid Winner and 2014 Cheerleading World’s Finalist. At NCA Nationals this season, Small Senior Level 3 placed 3rd and Small Junior Level 2 placed 4th. Teams will be competing at the 2016 Summit and Worlds Championships. Many alumni have also enjoyed successful cheerleading careers at colleges and universities, such as FAMU, University of Central Florida, Southeastern University, and the University of Louisville. Florida Triple Threat also has a competitive team for special needs athletes of all ages. The program relies on athletes and coaches who volunteer their time to practice once a week and assist the special needs athlete in competitions. The special needs program relies solely on donations and sponsors to fund competition fees, uniforms, bows, shoes and other necessary items. “Having a special needs team has really brought our athletes together for a bigger cause,” said Davies. Florida Triple Threat also offers birthday parties, Parkour, and high school cheerleading. High school cheerleading teams can rent gym space and coaches are available to help train the teams upon request. Coaches run the birthday parties, which include free time and games in the gym area. Parties are scheduled by appointment only. During Parkour classes, which are held on Friday nights from 7pm–9pm, instructors create exercises, build obstacles, and set up drills so the athletes can learn a variety of Parkour skills. For information, visit www.fla3threat.com or call (954) 514-7250.

Now put the heart of a team on the line and you will find boundaries pushed, limitations obliterated and goals exceeded. This is the essence of the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes, and more specifically, two of their 75+ members Jim and Michael Sayih, a father and son team, who together with an enormous support system, make the seemingly impossible...possible. Crossing the finish line of a duathlon at 5 years old may seem far fetched to most people. If the 5 year old was born with Cerebral Palsy, well, just about everyone would say it is impossible, but not Jim... and definitely not Michael. With a self-made rigged bike to include Michael and an upgraded “racing” wheelchair, Jim and Michael completed that duathlon. They didn’t know the definition of impossible then and they do not now, 18 years later after finishing countless more Duathlons, Triathlons, IRONMAN, Spartan Races & Battle Frog Races, just to name a few. Jim Sayih, a Police Lieutenant (Ret.) from the Miami Police Department, retired after serving 20 years to spend more time with his family, and specifically Michael to navigate the unfamiliar special needs world. He is co-author with Jack Canfield the Best Seller, Success Secret, the owner of 911 CrossFit in Cooper City, owner of an OrangeTheory franchise in Palm Beach Gardens, he was recently inducted into the Personal Trainer Hall of Fame, and he is a professor of Physical Science at Broward College. With this many balls in the air, one would imagine that he really has no time for much else. However, he participates in the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes as a member of the team, as well as a strength trainer for the membership. Jim believes in and encourages “positive” peer pressure. “Training rides, runs or swims by yourself isn’t conducive to pushing yourself. Our team of diverse members

push you to better your own times, to train harder and longer that you would on your own,” he said. “The majority of the members have already done IRONMAN Races, for example, and they share their wealth of knowledge with everyone in the club. I am a USAT Triathlon Certified Level 1 Coach with a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology, who brings a wealth of strength training information to the membership. It is a friendly, supportive, warm culture,” he added. Jim is also the Founder and Chairperson on the Board of Directors for SpecialCompass.org, a non profit organization promoting independence for those with disabilities, including Affordable Housing, inclusion is Sports Activities such as 5K Runs, Obstacle Courses, and Triathlons, assistance in physical and medical needs, government benefits, and employment opportunities. Michael participates in the Board Meetings as well. Soon Jim and Michael, along with SpecialCompass.org will announce the building of a prototype of apartments that cater specifically to special needs including wheelchair accessible doorways, wider hallways, user friendly kitchens and bathrooms, and they will be built close to medical facilities, shopping centers, and everyday needs furthering the road to independent living. Jim and Michael rely on each other as well as their team to make it over, through or under some of the obstacles and challenges in races as well as in their lives. It is Jim who is the front man...the physical pusher, puller and climber, but according to anyone who knows them, Michael is the more competitive of the dynamic duo. “Whenever we get passed by a few people on a course, Michael will say to me, ‘Ok Dad, that’s enough, let’s get going!’” said Jim. And that is when they kick into to a new gear, often humbling other unencumbered participants along the way (in races and in life). To learn more about the Fort Lauderdale Triathletes, visit www.fltri.com or go to Facebook (Fort Lauderdale Triathletes). For more information on Jim & Michael Sayih go to www.SpecialCompass.org.

roadway Kids Studio has perfected the magic recipe to make stars out of childhood performers. Singing, acting, dancing and performing can be taught and even taught well, but that does not mean the child will embrace the arts. After meeting with BKS owner and Artistic Director, Michelle Ameerally, it became clear that their secret ingredient is passion. Passion that comes from Michelle and her team of professionals who take the time to understand each student, to see each student’s potential and then help them unlock that potential at their own pace. There is no pressure put on any student, there is simply opportunity to improve in a safe, encouraging environment. This allows the child to find their path, hone their skills and develop their own passion for performing in their own time frames. Founded in 2006, Broadway Kids Studio has seen dozens of their students go beyond BKS to make careers out of their passion for performing. BKS students have gone on to land leading roles on Broadway Tours, become members of pop musical groups, and acted in both leading and supporting roles on television shows. One such student, Mariangeli Collado, began with BKS at age 7 and Michelle has been her private vocal coach since. Remembering Mariangeli’s first few weeks, Michelle said, “Her vocals were extravagant! It was amazing to hear this tiny person who could sing double the octaves of most people. But she was shy and was lacking performing skills, so we got her into group singing and dance.” Fast forward a few years as she gained the skills, experience, confidence and the passion to perform, and Mariangeli starred as the youngest performer on the YouTube series HitStreak at age 10. She recorded a cover of Adele’s “Skyfall” that launched her popularity and went on to do a cover of Katy Perry’s “Roar” which landed her 25 million viewers and over 29,000 subscribers! At age 12, Mariangeli was chosen as a member of the all girl group L2M (which stand for “Listening 2 Music”) signed by Warner Brothers. L2M recorded “Girlz” which was featured in the LEGO® Friends original movie entitled Girlz 4 Life. Mariangeli’s character in the movie is Olivia. Mariangeli has spent the last year flying between Los Angeles, New York City and Ft. Lauderdale, but no matter where she is or how long she is gone, she can’t wait to get back to Broadway Kids Studio and her extended family there. “Mariangeli is so sweet, uber talented, humble and so appreciative,” said Michelle. “We are so proud of who she is as a person, even more than her talent. These are the things we work so hard to instill in our students,” Michelle added. A few other young phenoms within the Broadway Kids Studio family are Emily Taylor Kaufman, Maisy

Surman, Issie Swickle, and Sophia Carson. Emily Taylor Kaufman was recently selected by the Phil Collins “Little Dreams Foundation” which fulfills the dreams of aspiring musicians, artist and athletes. She performed as the lead in Hairspray and in the supporting cast of a variety of other musicals. Maisy Surman, a student of Michelle’s for the past 7 years, also a triple threat, was a featured singer in Neil Goldberg’s, “WE” celebrating Broward County’s 100th Anniversary. Issie Swickle, previously featured in the Sports & Activities Directory, performed as the lead in the national Broadway tour of Annie. Sophia Carson, now age 23, honed her voice, acting and dancing with Michelle’s help and has gone on to appear as one of the main characters, Evie, in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Disney’s Descendants and was a guest star on the television series Austin & Ally. Broadway Kids Studio is a full service performing arts studio with over 7000 square feet of performance space. BKS offers group classes and private lessons in singing, acting, dancing, and musical instruments (piano, drums, and guitar). Additionally, BKS offers one of the most affordable and innovative AfterSchool programs anywhere in the United States. Their After-School Program includes up to 15 group classes a week and pick-up from some local area schools. BKS also has seasonal performing arts camps and performance opportunities for the aspiring young professional looking to take that “next step.” These include Dance Competition and Dance Company Teams, Star Performers for vocalists and musicians, and yearround auditions for their Shows (straight plays and musical productions). Some of their productions take place on-site in their very own Black Box Theater. BKS students also have access to a fully equipped recording studio and Pro-Tools certified sound engineers ready to help you record your next hit! Broadway Kids Studio Summer Camp is a huge hit with campers and parent alike! The focus is learning, allowing everyone an equal opportunity to perform, and having fun. Due to their foundation in education, all students learn all aspects of the performing arts. This summer, choose from Creative Camp (ages 5-13) performing Willy Wonka Kids and Disney’s Aladdin Kids or Broadway Performance Camp (ages 8-18) performing Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. and Bring It On, The Musical. To learn more about any of the performing arts programs, camps and competitive teams schedule a tour by calling 954-693-7500. enough to go on to play at the collegiate and professional levels. Toward the tail end of my playing career, I started to get into coaching. Over the last 10 years, I have worked with kids from ages 3 to 18, including boys and girls from the recreational level all the way up to U.S. Youth National Team level. I have seen many changes in youth soccer in this area and throughout the country over the past decade. I have even gone overseas to see what some of the big soccer clubs in the world are doing at the youth levels. After observing so many different environments, and then having children of our own, Jamilah Ramos and I set out to develop and create a youth academy that revolves around the most important element of youth development:”PLAY!” To us, the definition of “PLAY” is “kids being in control.” We see less and less PLAY every year in youth sports. How often do our kids go to practice or games and the coach is dictating play or commanding and directing the players? You see this just about everywhere you go. This is creating a big problem when it comes to youth soccer and childhood development. Soccer is a “player centered” game. The players must read cues through verbal and non-verbal communication, make decisions, and then execute the skills that the cues and decision dictate. This communication and decision making process happens hundreds of times throughout the game. If coaches are dictating and commanding a player’s every move, how will a player learn to make his own decisions, not only in soccer, but also in life?

At PLAY10, we want to give the game back to the players. We want to recreate the “street” environment where players have the freedom to experiment, be creative, and make mistakes. We believe that “Play” is the foundation of Passion. As soon as we get passion, the sky is the limit. Our objective is to create an environment where the kids are in control. Sometimes we need to allow them to make their own rules and experiment rather than have a coach make the rules or tell them the solutions to the problem. We want to develop players and individuals that have the flexibility to come up with creative solutions and not be afraid to fail while trying to seek that solution. This is a skill that is not only important for soccer, but for life. We want our players to develop confidence, insight, work ethic, and passion in whatever they decide to “PLAY.” Why PLAY10? When I was a kid in the neighborhood, we used to play pick up games in the street every day; soccer, baseball, basketball, football etc. Whenever we played soccer I would yell out, “I’m the number 10!” In soccer the 10 is the most famous number. This 10 is the player that creates, builds the game, has all the moves, and is usually known as the best player on the field. Just like kids make believe to be a super hero, I believed I was a 10. Every kid would have a favorite number or a favorite player they wanted to pretend to be. Kids can only do this when they are in control, when they “PLAY!” PLAY10 ACADEMY: A Movement Education & Sports Development Program. “Initial Stages” Program for Girls & Boys, Ages 3-5 at Plantation Central Park. DIRECTORY competition from around South Florida for the girls fast pitch softball tournament. Twenty five teams competed within the 11U to 18U divisions this past December in the two-day tournament. The Plantation Pressure 14U team rose to challenge and lived up to their name to win the 15U championship!

The Plantation Pressure faced a strong Pembroke Lakes Bandits team in the championship game. The Bandits started with a 2 run lead on Plantation in the 1st inning. According to Head Coach Chuck Donaldson, “It was a defensive battle and the score remained 2-0 until the last inning when the Pressure scored 2 runs taking the championship to extra innings.” The Bandits went on to score one run in extra innings, but since the Pressure were the home team, they had the last opportunity to bat. Tie Breaker rules start with a runner on 2nd base (Elizabeth Tucker). Gabby Boulton laid down a perfect bunt to move Tucker to 3rd base. Madison Turnbull beat out a ground ball and was safe at 1st.

Michelle Adelman then laid down a perfect bunt. With 2 outs and bases loaded (winning run on 2nd), Madison Santana worked the Bandits pitcher to a 3/2 full count before hitting a line drive to center field which plated Tucker and Turnbull to win the Championship! The 14U girls team outscored their opponents 2616 thanks to a fantastic team effort on offense and defense. The 3 pitchers for the Pressure were Jamie Davis, Emily McKnight, and Mia Stevenson. Jamie Davis pitched the championship game and Emily McKnight and Mia Stevenson carried the Pressure through the semi-final round. Leading the offense were Madison Santana (7/9 with a 778 average), followed by Danielle Derosa (8/11 with a 727 average). RBI leaders were Danielle Derosa with 6 RBI’s and Madison Schlecker with 4 RBI’s. Congratulations Plantation Pressure 14U Girls! ancing in Sunrise is a way of life for the students at Dance FX. Every day of the week you will find children from 18 months to 18 years filling the three, bustling studio rooms. On Saturday mornings, parents kick off the weekend watching their talented toddlers hone their motor skills and engage in interactive play. By starting students so young, Dance FX provides a foundation where aspiring dancers can put their best feet forward. “I’ve been coming to Dance FX since I was 4,” said 12-year-old Peyton Lewark. “I love jazz the best, but I am involved in hip hop, ballet and lyrical too. I always look forward to the competitions.” There are also two competition teams, the Excel Team and the Extreme Team. Competing gives dancers the opportunity to grow and train for auditions as young adults and Dance FX definitely has a track record for producing star dancer after star dancer. Past students have achieved success on So You Think You Can Dance (Season 9 Runner-Up Tiffany Maher and Season 10 Top 14 finalist Alexis Juliano). Dance FX alumni have landed jobs as Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, Florida Marlins Cheerleaders, Miami Heat Dancers, as well as dancers at Universal Studios, Busch Gardens and Magic Kingdom. You can even catch one alumnus in Vegas in The Beatles – Love - Cirque De Soleil. “My son has been coming for two years and he feels like he is part of a team,” said

Cristina Fernandez. “He loves all his classes, especially hip hop, jazz and acro.” If you are interested in camp this summer at Dance FX, the studio is currently taking registrations. The full-day camp offers a program that includes in-plaza, mini field trips. There will be spirit days, arts and crafts, and of course, lots of dancing with all the best music. The camp is for rising kindergarten students and up. For those who are looking for flexibility, pay by the day is an option. For all your questions and camp information, call (954) 742-3114. Dance FX is located at 10057 Sunset Strip, two doors down from Doris Italian Market.

ongratulations to Girls 12/13 Team Madrid who won the Division Championship for the Plantation Athletic League (PAL)! The 4th seeded team was coached by James Matarazzo and Jeff Cooney, who have won this division back to back these past two years. “This season was more challenging than last since there were only two returning players from last year’s team, and those were our daughters,” said Coach Matarazzo. “In addition, some of the girls on this year’s team had not ever played organized soccer before this season,” he added. By great team effort and hard work, combined with constantly shifting lineups and positions throughout the season, team Madrid overcame many challenges. Through trial and error, they were able to find the best combinations to put their players in a position to succeed each game. Team Madrid knocked off the 1st seed and 2nd seed on their way to the championship with stellar defense, beating those top seeds 1-0 both times. “This team was definitely one of the most improved teams by the end of the year,” Coach Matarazzo added. For more information on PAL Soccer, visit www.palsports.org. The next recreational season runs from November 2016 - February 2017 for boys & girls, ages 6 - 17. Registration is on Saturday, August 20, 2016 from 9am 2pm at Plantation Central Park Gym. Residents/$110, Non-Residents/$160.

ach year there are thousands of people who get braces on their teeth in an effort to straighten them and achieve the smile they have always dreamed of. Many more, especially adults, would if they didn’t have to keep braces on for a couple of years to achieve those great results. Whether you already have braces on or you are considering getting them, there is good news when it comes to the latest technology in the world of orthodontics! AcceleDent is a fairly new device that many people are eyeing because of the great results that it provides. While the small handheld device made its debut out of Texas in 2009, it has since then made its way around the world. As people increasingly learn about what AcceleDent is, how simple it is to use, and the great benefits, it’s becoming a must-have for those who are seeking teeth straightening treatment. Time Savings: There are numerous appeals to using AcceleDent, with the main one being that it can reduce the duration of the tooth straightening process by half the time. Many people who would need two years of treatment find that they are finished with their treatment and are having their braces taken off within 10-12 months, saving half the time. This is a major benefit because it saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent wearing braces, going for check-ups, and putting up with any inconvenience of having the braces on. Another one of the great things about AcceleDent is that it is non-invasive, so it does not require any type of needles or surgery. It also doesn’t require any type of anesthetic. In fact, it’s such a simple device to use that it is something that people use at home. It doesn’t require visits with the orthodontist to use it in conjunction with your braces, and it can be used for any type of braces that you may be using, including metal, Invisalign, etc. How it Works: The AcceleDent device has a handle with a mouth plate on the top of it. At the bottom there is a USB plug. The plug is used to charge the system on the computer, with it being recommended that you charge it every three days. The mouth plate is used by putting it into your mouth.

When the system is turned on, it creates a continuous vibration. It is this vibration that is so important and speeds along your treatment. The vibration, or pulsing, that is applied to the teeth accelerates the rate of the bone remodeling. When that happens, there is an increase in the rate of the tooth movement. The increase in the rate of the teeth moving because of the pulsing that the AcceleDent is creating has taken half of the treatment time off for many patients. The device is used at home for 20 continuous minutes per day. But it is lightweight enough that you can multitask as you are doing the treatment. Once it’s in your mouth, you bite down with just enough force to hold it into place. You can put it in for 20 minutes and let it send the pulses while you go about your business reading, answering emails, cooking dinner, or just about anything else. It’s a hands-free device that provides you the freedom to multitask as you are engaged in the treatment. The unit has been designed to give you a pulse to indicate 10 minutes has went by, and it will automatically power off once it has reached 20 minutes. This makes getting in the 20 minutes simple, because you don’t even have to pay attention to the time spent doing it; the device will keep track of the time for you. Advanced Design: The field of orthodontics has taken a step forward with AcceleDent because it helps people cut the time in half that it takes for treatment. It has been designed to do exactly that and people have been having a lot of success with it. The good news is that there are no down sides to using the AcceleDent treatment in conjunction with your braces, whatever type they may be. The device has received clearance by the Food & Drug Administration, is made in the USA, and is being used worldwide. With this advanced design, patients who have used it are also reporting that it’s comfortable and helps make their entire treatment more so. The pulsing that the AcceleDent sends to the teeth is found by some to comforting. In fact, the SoftPulse Technology that is used has been designed to use micropulses that are so gentle they are eight times less

powerful than using an electric or power toothbrush. Obtaining AcceleDent: For those who may be ready to turn up the speed on their treatment, it may be time to add AcceleDent. The device can be obtained from your orthodontist and it comes with a one-year warranty. It is designed to be used by one person and then disposed of after treatment has been completed. The device comes with a travel shell, so you can take it with you wherever you go and store it. The applicator piece can be cleaned by wiping it off, while the mouthpiece can be detached from the activator and washed using lukewarm water. In addition to being able to charge it using the computer, you also have the option of charging it in the charging dock. If the amount of time that it takes to get the smile you want has been holding you back, then it’s time to explore the latest technologies in orthodontics. AcceleDent will cut the time that it takes for your treatment in half, making it an appealing option. Plus, using it in conjunction with your braces is simple, something you can do right at home and requires very little effort because you can multitask as you use it. The next time you sit down to check out Facebook or respond to your emails, you could also be using AcceleDent and greatly reducing the amount of time that your overall treatment takes. That’s hard to beat!

M

ost of the reporting on the burgeoning generational problem of unpaid and outstanding student loan debt attempts to convey the impact through numbers. For example, a March 2014 Gallup survey of 30,000 college graduates of all ages found that: • Approximately 70 percent of all college graduates still have student loans to repay. • The average balance is more than $33,000 (up from $18,600 10 years ago). Sounds ominous, right? Well, how about these factoids, from a January 2014 Huffington Post article by Kyle McCarthy: • Currently, more than 40 million Americans hold student debt. The population with student loans is actually greater than the entire population of Canada, Poland, North Korea, Australia and more than 200 other countries. It’s also about four times greater than the population of Sweden. Out of the nearly 40 million borrowers, about seven million have defaulted on these student debts, Those numbers are stunning. And many economists believe the student loan burden has grown so large it is impacting sectors of the national economy, like new housing construction – graduates can’t afford to buy a home because a significant percentage of their earnings is servicing debt. Beyond the numbers, and calculations of wider economic impact, there are perhaps even greater concerns. For 30 years, the Gallup organization has used a series of questions to ask respondents how satisfied they are with their quality of life. The questions identify five areas of well-being: purpose, financial, community, physical, and social. When these questions were put to graduates in the most recent survey, those with high student loan debt self-reported significantly lower quality-of-life assessments. The finding that excess student debt impacts quality of life isn’t surprising. What does raise an eyebrow is how long the condition lasts. Per Gallup: Even 24 years after graduation, students who borrowed more than $25,000 are less likely to enjoy their work and less financially and physically fit than their counterparts who graduated without debt. For more recent college grads, the discrepancy is even more pronounced.

With the exception of the social category, graduates with student debt saw themselves as less successful (or thriving) in comparison to their peers who had no debt. The difference was most pronounced in regard to assessments of physical and financial well-being. Since the responses were subjective, it’s not clear that the high-debt/ lower-quality-of-life connection is causal or correlational – i.e., does high debt lead to poor health, or do unhealthy people also happen to have a lot of debt? But the implications are sobering: assuming too much debt early in adulthood has a long-term and wide-spread negative impact. For several generations, the decision to finance a college education has been relatively easy: getting a degree is so valuable, it’s worth borrowing for. The financial anchor of debt could usually be overcome by the increased earnings expected from a higher level of education. But in the last decade, the decision to borrow has become less certain. Student debt has a tipping point; the costs can be too steep, and the consequences can seep into other aspects of life. These factors should prompt serious discussions for parents and prospective students. For parents with younger children, it increases the urgency to establish or increase savings allocations. For those on the cusp of attending college, the conversation may be more difficult. At what point does a parent or a young adult say “I/we can’t – or won’t – borrow any more money to go to school?” Often, this is the first critical financial decision a young adult will make: Even if my parents are willing to co-sign, how much debt should I have before I’ve even begun a career? As the reports suggests, this is not purely a financial decision. A debt incurred today can be a determining factor for a long time after – in all areas of life. BRIGHT STEPS FORWARD, INC. F

ounded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that all children with neurological disorders such as autism and cerebral palsy have access to top quality physical, occupational, speech and ABA therapy. We at Bright Steps Forward believe that all children have the ability to exceed expectations, achieve unexpected milestones and blossom before our eyes with the proper therapy and encouragement. In fact, we have seen the miracle of wonderment many times as children learn they DO have skills, that they SHOULD set goals, and that dreams CAN come true when their confidence is supported through early and intensive therapeutic interventions. Unfortunately, not all families have the ability or opportunity to take advantage of such services for their child, which is why Bright Steps Forward (BSF) was started. Founder Eileen de Oliveira witnessed her son, Lucas (who was born with cerebral palsy) learn to crawl and walk through early and intensive pediatric therapies and he exceeded all expectations. It was this breakthrough in Lucas’ development that inspired Eileen to create Bright Steps Forward so that others could benefit from the therapies that Lucas was privileged to receive. Today, children from all over the world are helped by assistance through Bright Steps

Forward and are now able to receive treatments and therapies that would otherwise be out of reach for them; families who either cannot afford insurance or afford the copay and deductibles because of other added expenses that go along with having a disabled child. Bright Steps Forward also operates a fully accredited school for children with disabilities for children from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students attending Bright Steps Forward come from educational or home environments where the expectations were overwhelming and they were unsuccessful. Many of these students are low to average functioning children, adolescents and teenagers diagnosed with Autism, Aspergers, PDD, NVLD and other autistic spectrum disorders. Unlike larger public schools, the classrooms at BSF are smaller thus preventing a child from getting lost. BSF teachers nurture each student to discover their own natural strengths and achieve their maximum potential. BSF’s academic standards are aligned with the State of Florida and each child is given an equal opportunity to get the education that all children deserve. Step Up for Students and McKay Scholarships are accepted. Cerebral Palsy is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary between people but may include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing and speaking. Often babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl or walk as early as other children their age. Difficulty with the ability to think or reason and seizures each occurs in about one third of people with CP. Autism s a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. Every child is a miracle waiting to happen if they just get the chance. ith new administrators, Mrs. Judith E. Pitter, principal, and Dr. Deborah L. Brown, assistant principal, on board, Plantation Elementary continues to work hard towards increasing student achievement through STEM integrated learning. Students recently showcased their second Engineering is Elementary projectbased learning event, titled Night at the Museum - Super Scientists in Action. This was a fantastic turnout with parents, students, teachers and community partners present to view the museum-style displays and share in the docents’ presentations. Projects ranged from creative ways to construct packages for shipping items, to building electric circuits that perform different tasks. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had a fun, educational night to showcase their STEM learning. Along with focusing on student achievement, Plantation Elementary is also dedicated to increasing parent involvement. The most recent event invited parents to a Curriculum Night Under the Big Top - a circus theme workshop that provided informative educational sessions for the parents and fun, game-like stations for the students. Parents reviewed the grade level requirements of the Florida State

Standards and learned some helpful tips to assist their children. In addition, specific Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) data and details were shared so that intermediate students could receive extra support at home. Future events such as “Principal’s Chat” will also invite parents to participate in fun, educational field trips to local museums and establishments to learn about educational activities that will assist parents in supporting their children’s learning while at home or out in the community. Several local Plantation community businesses and establishments such as Young at Art Children’s Museum, Brio Tuscan Grille, Classic Bus Lines, and IHOP have already committed support to the first planned parent field trip. Plantation Elementary looks forward to working with more parents and community business partners to not only increase student achievement, but also increase parent involvement. Community supporters can help spread the word about the educational endeavors at this Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet school. How to Know When School Problems Need Intervention By Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

I

t’s perfectly normal for children to face challenging periods in school, but problems that worsen or seem to seep into other areas of a child’s life shouldn’t be ignored. Other than paying attention to grades, how can you tell whether an academic issue calls for your involvement? Here are a few things to look for that are likely symptoms of a bigger problem that you should address: Lost interest – Dramatic changes in a child’s motivation and interest, especially if the child once was eager to learn, are worth investigating further. Indifference toward school and learning may be indicative of the child’s lost confidence in his or her abilities. After repeated disappointments in school, some children would rather not try at all than continue to try and fail. Bad attitude – A child who frequently expresses displeasure and even anger about school, teachers and homework has probably surpassed his or her threshold of normal frustration. Often, negativity overcomes children who struggle in school and feel unable to overcome their problems. Low self-esteem – Children’s hopeless, disparaging statements about themselves and school (I’m stupid! I’ll never understand this! I hate school!) should be a red flag for parents, especially if they are frequent. This typically points to a learning issue that has grown over time and the child has reached a low point. Consistent difficulty grasping assignments and concepts – Gaps in academic skills can create major roadblocks for children as they move through the school year. Left uncorrected, these gaps can make it difficult, if not impossible, for a child to learn

effectively because he or she might be missing skills from previous grades. Without the necessary building blocks, the child might struggle to grasp new, more challenging content and concepts. Too much time on homework – A child who puts a lot of effort and time into homework but still struggles to complete it (or complete it correctly) might be grappling with comprehension issues, procrastination (due to a lack of understanding) or another problem. Unfocused most of the time – A child who is easily distracted or disengaged might need targeted help. He or she might be tuning out in class or during homework time for a variety of reasons that stem from learning difficulties, diminished confidence or other problems. Behavioral changes – Change in demeanor can mean many things and often points to a child’s concerns about his or her academic challenges. A child who feels embarrassed about his or her lack of skills, for example, might be disruptive in the classroom to deflect any focus on him or herself. Ups and downs are to be expected throughout your child’s school years, but some red flags shouldn’t be ignored. If you are growing more concerned each day about your child’s academic well being, or if you know your child is having difficulty in school but are not sure how to help, call Huntington Learning Center. We can pinpoint the problems and take action to help your child raise his or her grades, confidence and motivation. About Huntington: Huntington is the tutoring and test prep leader. Its certified tutors provide individualized instruction in reading, phonics, writing, study skills, elementary and middle school math, Algebra through Calculus, Chemistry, and other sciences. On Friday night, January 30, their road led to the state championship. “I was on competition squad all 4 years,” said senior Kirsten Hunt, Varsity Captain of the Football Cheerleaders. “My freshman year I was thrilled to go to the state competition and we placed 3rd. This year, the team was more determined to win and was very close knit. I still can’t believe we are state champions.” The squad was not allowed to tumble in the division it competed in this year. The team won in the division called, ‘large squad non-tumbling.’ The routine began with music and led to a minute of cheers in the middle, with the routine ending with a main stunt and dance to

To help pay for the professional help and the trip to states, the cheerleaders held fundraisers. On weekends, the team worked at car washes and sold icees and cookie dough. The football game tickets and pep rallies helped bring more money to offset the trip cost for each girl. Coach Mele added, “Each cheerleader worked so hard and gave 100%. As a coach, that is all I could have asked for.”

ollege acceptances were off the charts this year at South Plantation High School. The seniors worked hard for four years to achieve their goals. The college application process began in September and by April the students knew where they were headed to begin their college career in August, and some will even be attending this summer. “I will be attending the University of Florida this summer,” said senior D. Joseph. “I can’t wait to take my first class. As soon as I saw the words, ‘Congratulations,’ on the email, I couldn’t believe it. Getting excepted into the top school in the state made all the hard work worth it.” While some students heard they were accepted to their dream college, others were given offers with a substantial amount of scholarship money. “I was accepted at UCF and then a letter came in the mail from the university offering me $3,000 per year AND I earned a high enough test score to earn another $12,000 from Bright Futures,” said senior Y. Lin, who maintained a 4.2 GPA. Juniors are taking the SAT and ACT College standardized tests before they officially become ‘Seniors.’ They will begin applying to colleges as early as the second week in August of 2016, when the University of Florida opens their online application process. Most of the state colleges and universities will open September. “I have one student at UF and I am working with my juniors this year on ACT and SAT prep so they are ready for the application process. You can have a great GPA, but you need the test scores for college acceptances,” said Denise Horland. We are very proud of our entire Senior class….all 550 of them! And to quote Dr. Seuss, we are looking forward to seeing where our graduates continue on after high school….“Oh, the places you’ll go!”

COLLEGE FAIR AT PLANTATION HIGH SCHOOL

P

lantation High School hosted its annual college fair on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Since its inception, the fair has given students the opportunity to speak with college representatives and community agencies, getting the latest information on college admissions and financial aid. “The purpose of the college fair is to connect our students with colleges and universities across the state and country, while giving them a platform to have their admissions, financial aid and scholarship questions answered face to face by an admission representative,” said Brooke Smith, Brace Advisor. As a result of this year’s fair, more than 700 junior and senior participants were exposed to over 70 colleges – in state and out of state institutions offering an outstanding educational experience and partnering agencies committed to their post-secondary success. According to Marissa Hoffman, Plantation High School Math Teacher, “A key take away for many of our students preparing to begin the college application process is a being able to leave the college fair with a list of schools

and colleges they would like to further research in the coming months. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to hear what colleges are looking for in a potential candidate, as it relates to extra-curricular involvement, leadership, and academics.” “Contributing to the community and empowering students to take control of their own lives through continued education and financial literacy is a top priority for Wells Fargo,” said Dwight Thomas, Wells Fargo Branch Manager. As a result, Wells Fargo provided all attendees with a copy of their College Planning Guide Notebook and College Steps Magazine. They include tools and resources to help students as they prepare for college, understand, plan for and manage the cost of attendance. Alona DiPaolo, Principal Plantation High School, sums up the day with these sentiments, “This year’s college fair was another huge win for our students! We are excited to help them take the necessary steps toward realizing their personal and professional goals.”

…AND WHAT MY DAUGHTER TAUGHT ME By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed, Director of Early Childhood Programs, Temple Dor Dorim

I

t was a typical, very hot and muggy South Florida day. You know…the kind of day when you’ve just showered, left your front door, and by the time you get to the car you look like you’ve just finished a marathon. I was sluggishly on my way out the door to ride my bike with my sidekick and workout buddy, my seven year old daughter Jessie. Despite the stifling humidity, Jessie was determined to get a bike ride in…she said we needed to “train.” Jessie was well aware that I was getting ready to do my first “100 mile” cycle for the Dolphin Cancer Challenge, to raise funds for Sylvester Cancer Center. She was along for the “ride” from the moment I signed up. She had given me the confidence and encouragement with affirmative statements right from the start… “Of course you can do it mommy,” “We’ll train together,” “You’re doing a mitzvah.” The Mitzvah part was the statement that propelled me into action. Mitzvah, is the Jewish word for “doing a good deed” and once she said that, it made me realize how important it was to model that act for my daughter. That “training day” was one of many bike rides I took with my daughter. Of course my “real training days” involved hours on the bike on my own, but my real encouragement came on those rides with Jessie. Unsolicited, she would give me pep talks and motivational pushes that made me smile and relish those rides. And, despite her only being 7, we still spoke about Cancer, and illness and the

importance of finding ways for people to get better. She knew this ride had a purpose and even helped me make the “posts” online to solicit donations for the cause. When we reached our goal of $1,000 on the actual day of the race her enthusiastic “Woo Hoo!” matched mine. “How many people can we help mommy?” brought tears to my eyes. The day of the Cancer Challenge, I rode my 100 miles and it was an amazing experience. To see so many people there to battle a terrible disease that touches everyone’s life in some way, from survivors to family and friends, was quite a sight to see and one I’ll never forget. I learned how strong the human spirit and determination can be and discovered the strength that comes from ‘When you find your will, you find a way’. My daughter wanted to hear all about my ride and share it with her friends at school. She was just as proud as I felt about my accomplishment. I realized though, that most of what she learned and took away from this experience wasn’t from the day of the race, but the days leading up to it and our many casual conversations. I knew it from the empowering statements she made… “Of course you can do it mommy, you can do anything!”… “We can do this together, I’ll train you!” … “We have to help as many people as we can…Let’s make a post!” I was reminded just how important it is to plant these seeds of experience. Those words my daughter spoke showed me she was learning lessons that would carry her for a lifetime; that she can accomplish whatever she sets her mind to, that when we support each other we can find strength and the importance of helping others fight battles we believe in. Together we set out to “conquer” Cancer that day and I somehow know that won’t be the last time we unite on a cause and conquer again!
