Dear Readers, Happy New Year to all of you! May your 2015 be filled with good health, happiness, love and prosperity. After those big four categories are covered, let’s think about what we hope to accomplish this year. To set us up for success instead of failure, let’s not refer to this as “New Year’s Resolutions” (they don’t work for me either), but more of a Bucket List challenge. What is on your Bucket List for 2015? Take a few minutes or a few days and write your 2015 Bucket List down on paper with a big box next to each thing on your list so you can check it off when it has been completed. Post the list on your bathroom mirror or your refrigerator where you can see it each and every day. Before you know it, you’ll be doing it! Ok, I’ll kick start this Bucket List Challenge and each quarter I will report back as to what I have done from my list and I will post photos of me doing it: Sky Dive, Learn How to Sew, Become Proficient at Driving Boats, Run in a Charitable 5K, Secure a National Account for all seven of our Sports & Activities Directories. See how easy that is? Now write your list. Once you have accomplished something on the list...email me what you did and attach a photo of you doing it so that we can publish it in our next issue! What’s new at Sports & Activities Directory? We have just celebrated a year of having our App for Smartphones! We worked out the bugs (yep, we had our share!), listened to our App users and clients to make things easier and better and have already amassed over a thousand users since we relaunched the new and improved app in late July. We also added our newest area’s information from the Bradenton/Sarasota area! The App provides easy access to websites and phone numbers as well as location mapping, advertiser information and special offers. What has been receiving the most acclaim so far is the photo gallery and the event listings. As we are always updating and trying to further improve, we have also activated all of the websites and phone numbers for our not-for-profit sports leagues and city programs. Once in our App, tab Broward County and then tap the S & A Directory to see all of the categories of directories we offer (sports, health, restaurants, academic, activities, parks, etc..) from all over Broward County. Feel free to send us an email from the app with comments or suggestions. Enjoy this wonderful South Florida weather! Flip through our Events section in this publication or on our App to find fun things the entire family can do together. Get off the bench and get out and play! Our best to you, Margot & Nicole

Relax! You’re in Plantation!
12
It’s hard to believe we’re already at the start of a new year. As we look forward to a happy and prosperous 2015 for us all, we are reminded of the many events and activities the City of Plantation has planned for the coming year. Plantation has just what you’re looking for: whether you live in the east, central or western portions of the City, Plantation offers residents unprecedented access to recreation facilities, events and programs, many of which are free or at a minimal cost. Our world-class facilities draw national and international visitors to our City, and help support our local businesses. The Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club is one of the most beautiful, unique and challenging courses in Broward County. It attracts nationally ranked tournaments such as the Web.com Second Stage Qualifier and the PGA-sanctioned Drive, Chip and Putt Competition for kids ages 4-16, as well as locally sponsored tournaments throughout the year. It is a preferred location for over 52,000 golfers a year, and the perfect spot for weddings, baptisms and other family celebrations. The Everglades inspired wetlands and linear park provide safe haven for local wildlife and a learning experience for visitors. South Florida weather is perfect for a game of tennis, and the City has over 50 tennis courts for your enjoyment located at parks throughout the City, and formal tennis lessons are available at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center at Central Park. The City also hosts several prestigious tennis tournaments throughout the year at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center, including the USTA Girls 14 Clay Court Championships in July, bringing the country’s brightest young tennis stars to Plantation. Almost every weekend, horse shows are presented at the Plantation Equestrian Center at Volunteer Park. Kids can learn to ride horses in a safe and fun environment at the ShareA-Pony day camps during non-school days, and during Spring and Winter Breaks. Also onsite at Volunteer Park is one of the City’s signature parks, Camp Everglades – a perfect for the kids to play, and for you to relax. Finally, each Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the City hosts a Farmers Market in Volunteer Park’s parking lot. You’ll find fresh organic and non-organic produce, breads and other baked goodies, homemade pasta and sauces, plants and herbs, and so much more. We hope you’ll stop by for a visit. The Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library holds community events that promote literacy for children, such as the Teddy Bear Picnic, the Summer Reading Program, and daily story times. The Plantation Historical Museum helps share Plantation’s rich past with its current population. Each year they present Winter Wonderland, an exhibit of over 40 trees decorated in a variety of themes. Within walking distance from the Library and Museum is our newest signature park, Plantation Woods, with its forest-themed play areas designed for kids of all ages, and a water splash pad. Annual events such as the Royal Egg Hunt, the Tinsel Town Cabaret, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks, Santa’s Visit and the Holiday parade and more, all bring residents, friends and families together and help make them feel connected to the community. Our partnership with the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce helps promote awareness for many City businesses, schools and volunteer organizations, and provides opportunities for students to earn community service hours required to graduate. There is a real history and sense of community with Plantation. The parks, facilities, special events and recreation programs provided by the City of Plantation provide citizens, businesses and visitors a place to relax, compete, rejuvenate and grow. They help fashion memories, and connect us to our past. Plantation is just as committed to providing
opportunities to create memories for future generations. Your Mayor,
Diane Bendekovic

he 7th Annual Festival of Treasures is an Art, Handcrafts, and Handmade Jewelry Show that takes place on Saturday and Sunday, March 7th and 8th, 2015 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. This free event is held at Volunteer Park Community Center, 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard between Flamingo Road and N.W. 118th Avenue in Plantation. There is no charge for parking as well. The Festival has now grown into a 2-day event with 40 crafters inside the Volunteer Community Center, while additional crafters line the outside walking paths. The Festival of Treasures is sponsored by the Plantation Junior Women’s Club’s Beautification Committee as a fundraiser for beautification projects in the City of Plantation. in the NFL for 11 years. He made the Pro Bowl team in 1993, 94, and 95. He was aggressive on the field for years, and is now aggressive with saving money. He also loves to coupon. What is couponing? It’s a hobby, an art, and it’s fun for many who check around all week for the best coupons they can find on products for their family. Sims considers himself a good, solid couponer, who really looks for items his family needs. “With a total of 5 kids, we could spend a lot each month at the grocery store, but I always enjoy
getting a good deal,” Sims said. He began seeing the benefit of clipping coupons when he saw his wife looking through the Sunday papers. “She used to have a folder with all of her coupons in it each week, and then it became a game between us to see which one of us could save the most money,” Sims added. Keith knows it takes some time each week to search for coupons. He has had up to 100 apps on his phone to check for the best deals. Now, there is one app called Couwalla that can house all your coupons and your loyalty cards on it, to make couponing easier. “This is one-stop shopping for me now,” Sims said. “I’m a technology geek and with the Couwalla app organizing all my coupons, I won’t need to print them out, or keep the loyalty cards for all the stores on my key chain. I also won’t have to keep checking all the other apps anymore.” You can download the app by sending a text to 30241 and type the word ‘Couwalla’ to receive the download link, OR search for ‘Couwalla’ in the iTunes Store. Sims recommends for everyone to start out using at least one coupon per store. Even by spending just a little time, you can begin saving. Sims said, “Give it a try, download Couwalla, and maybe you will be hooked like I am!”

he Kendra’s Kisses Foundation 7th Annual Memorial 5K (3.1 miles) will take place on March 22, 2015 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL at 7:30am. All proceeds from the race will benefit Kendra’s Kisses, the Kendra Vermont Foundation. This foundation was established in May 2007 after Marc and Christy Vermont’s four-year-old daughter Kendra passed away from a malignant brain tumor. Kendra was initially treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL and then, after her cancer was found to be more advanced than originally diagnosed, they went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude pays for the costs involved with treatments, but there are many other costs that are not covered. “The world does not put everything on hold when you are dealt the blow of childhood cancer. Bills still need to be paid and that is where Kendra’s Kisses steps in with its grant program”, says Marc who works for Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue. I got the idea to do a 5K fundraiser for Kendra’s Kisses after participating in races supporting St. Jude. I know there is a great running community in South Florida and they are more than eager to help out a great cause. Making this event a run and walk allows everyone to come out and have a good time, raise money, and get some free goodies,” says
Marc. Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in several categories and all paid participants are given a custom lapel pin, a commemorative moisture control t-shirt and a sling bag. Trophies are also awarded to the overall winners. Every year, a special presentation is awarded to a child who is currently battling cancer. “It is wonderful to be able to make an immediate impact in these children’s lives,” says Christy, a nail technician in Hollywood. “During our time in need, the South Florida community pulled together for us so that we could spend every day with Kendra and we did not have to worry about where our mortgage payment was coming from,” said Christy. Marc and Christy are the President and Vice President of Kendra’s Kisses and work part time at it raising $20,000 a year through events such as this 5K race. Kendra’s Kisses is a charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance in the form of social, emotional, and financial support to families and caregivers in need when a child or children of that family is diagnosed with a life threatening illness. More information can be found on their website at www.kendraskisses.org and follow along on Facebook. If you would like to make a donation or volunteer, you may do so on the website.

There must be at least three cyclists. • Carlos’ Big Group Ride, led by Carlos Londono, begins at Memorial Hospital Miramar at 7:30am. Riders may be dropped. ome are motivated by the competition, while others ride for the fun of it. All of the members of Team Memorial, however, share the same love of cycling and they are looking for others in the community who feel the same way about the sport. Team Memorial’s mission is to encourage everyone to participate in bicycling - whether for recreation, transportation, fitness or competition. Members work together to serve the South Florida community by promoting safer conditions for cyclists and other road and trail users. They are committed to supporting bicycling through education, training and social activities. The group was founded 23 years ago, when several employees of Memorial Healthcare System, a non-profit healthcare organization, started riding together. A few years later, they decided to formalize the group. Today, hundreds of cyclists of all abilities participate in several rides that occur throughout West Broward. The group includes both men and women who represent a wide range of professions. They ride in an organized pack so they can ride competitively, yet safely. Team Memorial rides are open to anyone interested in joining. Some of them include: • Frank’s Classic Ride, led by Frank Sacco, begins at Hawkes Bluff Elementary School in Southwest Ranches at 7:30am. It is a no drop ride with stops for flats and mechanicals. magine the best, most fulfilling night of your life. You are with the people you most care about…laughing, joking, enjoying the fresh air, spending quality time together. Now imagine spending that time simultaneously accomplishing something wonderful. You have the opportunity to stop imagining and go experience it, all of it. On Friday, April 24, 2015, the City of Plantation is hosting “Relay For Life” the nationwide signature event for the American Cancer Society and the single largest non-profit event in the world. Between the months of March and June 2015, relays will be held in over 5,000 communities, which includes 23 countries throughout the word. Historically, this four month annual drive towards raising funds for the fight against cancer has raised over $374,000,000. It is about a community that takes up the fight against cancer in a way that is a celebratory, fun and a unique experience. Unlike any other walk or fundraising event, Relay for Life is the overnight experience of a lifetime!! Participating is easy, fun and, at times, deep felt and healing. To be a relay participant, gather teams of people from the communities and organizations of which you belong and join together in Plantation Central Park at 6:00 PM April 24th to walk, run, stroll and even roll against cancer. Registration can be completed at www.relayforlife.org and is just $10 per team member or individual. Teams keep at least one member of the team walking and representing the team at all times during the event. Teams are formed from groups of families and friends, co-workers, and civic or religious organizations. During the event, you will enjoy around-the-clock family-oriented fun and entertainment in your own neighborhood, while raising funds and awareness in the battle against cancer. From start to finish there will be wonderful moments of celebration, reflection,
camaraderie and triumph. Honoring Survivors! In each community, cancer survivors, young and old, are invited to participate in the Opening Ceremony of the Relay For Life by walking the Survivor’s Victory Lap around the track. This symbolic tribute honors cancer survivors and celebrates life! Candlelight/Luminaria Ceremony! The opening festivities will be followed with a candlelight ceremony at Relay For Life. All those who wish to will have the opportunity to light a candle, or have one lit in their absence, as a memorial to a loved one who has lost their battle to cancer or in honor of a cancer survivor. The heartfelt love and caring shared by friends and family during this ceremony is moving and healing. Fun! On Relay night, participants pitch tents and decorate in the theme their team has chosen and everybody is “Ready to Relay.” Throughout the evening and into the next day, participants enjoy entertainment, games, music, great food, camaraderie and tons of FUN. Long before the last walkers approach the finish line at closing ceremonies, new lifelong friends have been made, old friends and family have been hugged and all hearts have been touched by the magic that is Relay For Life. If you are or know a cancer survivor and would like them to be honored, or if you would like to contribute to the Relay for Life as a team, sponsor or possibly part of the planning committee, please contact Alexandra Rousseau, Community Representative at (954) 200-7522. Please visit The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life website at www.relayforlife.org to, find a relay in your community or for more information about Relay For Life.

he sun has definitely come out for one of south Florida’s own! That’s right, 9 year old Issie Swickle, of Davie, has been tapped to play the lead roll of Annie in the National Broadway Tour of the TONY award-winning musical Annie! In June, Issie traveled to Pearl Studios in New York City and competed against hundreds of would be Annie’s to nail down the top spot. Issie has been studying at Broadway Kids Studio since she was 5 years old. Issie’s mother, Dana Swickle, actually found the studio by accident. She got lost in the plaza, then ended up having Issie’s 5th birthday party there. The past 4 years she has taken hours of dance, piano, acting, and voice lessons and participated in many rehearsals and local shows. All to, hopefully, one day, hit it big on Broadway. Michelle Ameerally, owner of Broadway Kids Studio in Davie where Issie trains says, “Issie is simply amazing. This is not work for her. She loves everything about performing.” One of Issie’s good friends and fellow Broadway Kids Studio student Maisy Surman, 11, says she “talks to Issie on the phone a lot. We talk about normal things. I was so excited for Issie when she got the roll. I was sad because she was leaving, but so happy because she worked hard for this.” Shea Korman, 8, “I came to Broadway Kids Studio to take lessons after I saw Issie in the Sound of Music.” Emily Alderman - 15, Nya Owusu-Afriyie - 9, and Abby Canalejo - 10, have worked with Issie while at the studio and they all say, “Issie is a sweet, fun, and humble girl. She’s sassy, happy and we are all so happy for her.” How did a girl from Davie end up in New York City? Well, during the summer of 2013 Issie went to NYC and attended a workshop called Broadway Artists Alliance. This workshop is attended by agents seeking talent. This is where Issie met her Agent Nancy Carson of Carson Adler Agency. On June 8th 2014, Issie and her family flew to NYC for the first round of auditions for Annie. June 14th she was called back with a group of 6 girls and eventually told she was selected for the lead role of Annie. Her mother, Dana,
said “We could not believe she got the lead role. We were stunned and just didn’t know what to do or how to react.” When asked how Issie felt about landing the role, Dana said, “She’s nine. She was really happy, but I don’t think she understands the enormity of the situation. This tour is a pure blessing.” Issie and Dana have relocated to New York City while rehearsals are going on. Moving wasn’t an issue for Issie. She is so even keeled, she just goes with the flow. She understands what’s expected of her and she delivers. Rehearsals are six days a week and she gets up at six a.m. She attends tutoring from 9 to noon and then rehearses all afternoon. At about six p.m. she has another hour of schooling. We all know that Annie has short red hair, so what happened to Issie’s beautiful, long brown locks? They had to be cut for the roll and her hair was dyed red! Her hair will be donated to Locks of Love. “Issie loved to play with her hair. She was always playing with it. She would watch videos and learn different hair styles and try them out on herself. She knew if she got the role of Annie, she’d have to cut her hair. Once it was cut and dyed it was a little shocking to her. But now, she’s used to it and she’s able to style it in different ways,” her mother says. Issie says, “It’s like what Shailene Woodley had to do. Her character in Divergent had long hair. She had to cut it off for her character in The Fault in Our Stars. It will grow back!” When asked if she had any advice for other kids who dream of performing Issie said, “Hard work pays off. Keep trying and believe in yourself.” Although this tour of Annie is scheduled for 3 years, Issie has signed on for one year. After that, everything will be re-evaluated and decisions made as to whether or not she will continue with the show or if the role will be recast. Broadway Kids Studio is located at 9042 West State Road 84 Davie, Florida 33324, 954-693-7500.

BUT IT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE A SEIZURE:
RECOGNIZING EPILEPSY IN YOUR CHILD By Kelly Wilson
W
hat would go through your mind if you were talking to your child and in the midst of your conversation, he or she begins to “daydream” and is unresponsive to your verbal or visual cues? Would you know what to do or even understand what is happening? Most of us would assume the child is distracted or uninterested in what we have to say; however, the reality is there may be something else occurring. Currently, nearly 3 million people in the United States live with epilepsy with an additional 200,000 new cases of epilepsy diagnosed annually (epilepsy.com). In Florida alone, there are approximately 375,000 people living with epilepsy, including 45,000 children. Despite the fact that between 4 and 10 out of every 1,000 people currently live with active seizures, there remains a vast misunderstanding of seizure manifestations and determining which seizures are epileptic. There are over a dozen categories of seizures, yet most of the general population is aware of only the “Grand Mal” type. It is imperative for parents to understand that seizure symptoms can vary vastly. Among many others, seizures can present as any of the following: • Short attention blackouts presented as daydreaming • Rapid blinking • Head nodding • A blank stare followed by chewing, picking at clothes, mumbling or random movements • Sudden fear, anger or panic for no reason • Muscle jerks of arms, legs or body • Odd changes in the way things look, sound, smell or feel Epilepsy can become apparent in a patient during infancy or may not expose itself until adolescence or adulthood. It can happen to anyone at any time and 1 in 26 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime. In fact, many famous and successful people have had epilepsy including rock star Neil Young and keynote speaker of 33rd Annual Epilepsy Foundation National Conference, Danny Glover. According to EFOF (The Epilepsy Foundation Florida), Julius Caesar, Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton, Tolstoy and Vincent Van Gogh are believed to have had epilepsy, as well. It is important to know that not all seizures are epileptic and not all are life-long conditions. Seizures can develop as the result of head trauma, high fevers or other illnesses and are recognized to be a co-occurring condition of other concerns such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy. More people have epilepsy than those with Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy and Parkinson’s combined, yet, despite this frequency of incidence; the stigma associated with epilepsy has stifled sufficient research and funding. Established in 1971, The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida is an affiliate of the national, non-profit organization with eight Florida offices serving 36 of the 67 counties. The foundation is the pinnacle resource for patients with a seizure disorder serving as a medical and educational advocate. They also champion the cause with
various events throughout the year to both raise awareness and funds for medical research and care for the millions living with this condition. Located at 512 NE 3rd Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale, The Epilepsy Foundation Florida encourages those who are in need of guidance to reach out to them. On March 15, 2015, The Epilepsy Foundation will host “Walk the Talk for Epilepsy.” Over 900 walkers will gather at Hollywood Beach North Beach Park, 3601 N Ocean Drive, for the event. The EFOF will also be hosting the “Champions of the Heart Luncheon” in Jacksonville on February 27th. Their goal is to raise $80,000 to send over 100 children to Camp Boggy Creek, founded by the late Paul Newman and General Norman Schwarzkopf for children with chronic or life threatening illnesses. Each year, the foundation provides tuition, transportation and a caseworker to each child who many not have otherwise been able to attend summer camp. The EFOF’s community resource specialist visits schools to educate both the staff as well as the students with age appropriate programs in a one to one or assembly setting. This free service has proven successful in creating sensitivity as well as allowing students to know what to do in the event of a seizure. The educational materials provided by the resource coordinator have proven invaluable in schools across the state. The EFOF also provides services to those with epilepsy in a variety of other ways. First and foremost, the EFOF is in partnership with the Dan Marino Pediatric Center in Weston where patients pay on a sliding scale. They provide advocacy for children needing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), helping them get on track and providing assistance with testing. In the event of a lapse in insurance, the EFOF can help with Patient Assistance Programs that can often provide 3 months of medical supplies. Parents and adult patients can come to the EFOF for support through Facebook, the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida website (EFOF.org), as well as support groups, all provided as a free service. They also have a Tool Kit for parents with information on how to help children who are newly diagnosed, including a seizure log and first aid poster. Just as important as supporting those who have epilepsy, the EFOF also does their part in preventing this condition. In 2013, the EFOF provided over 10,000 free bike helmets to children across the state. If you are concerned or suspect epileptic activity in your child, are in need of additional information or resources for you or your newly diagnosed loved one or are seeking an advocate to help, contract the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida at (954) 779-1509 or visit their website, EFOF.org.

Color War, Capture the Flag, potato sack races…shaving cream, cheers and chants, watermelon poolside…crafts, flashlights, card games and gooey S’mores. As parents reminisce, these are the memories they share… these are the memories of summer. Even though summer is still a few months off, it’s already time to sort through choices and make plans for the family. As camps begin requesting deposits earlier and earlier each year, parents are faced with the daunting task of figuring out what they should do with their children for the summer. Travel camp, day camp, sleep away or sports camp? Maybe the choice is between a specialty camp like dance or football, or maybe it’s a trip up North to stay with the grandparents. With so many choices it can be overwhelming. So how does a parent decide? So many times we base our decisions on what our own memories are and this is how we decide for our children. Whether we loved or didn’t enjoy camp as a kid, we might decide to choose a camp based on those experiences. Although it’s understandable that our own experiences from childhood influence our bias, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of our children. The first thing a parent needs to ask themselves is what type of camp meets
their individual child’s needs. Sit down and list their interests. Does your child love art? Love to play sports? Do they thrive on constant action from one activity to the next or are they more comfortable moving at a more leisurely pace? Do they need a smaller more personal environment? Is your child outdoors often or are they continually asking to go back inside? These kinds of questions should help narrow down the big list of choices. After deciding what type of camp, the next criteria for choosing a camp should be what you want your child to get out of their camp experience. Aside from enjoying it, are there specific skills you hope they’ll develop over the summer? Whether it’s improving at a sport, making friends or becoming more independent, is the camp you’re choosing conducive to this being accomplished? Last but not least, the camp has to meet your needs as a parent in regard to comfort level when it comes to safety, supervision, location and, of course, financial commitment. For instance, what kind of supervision are you as a parent comfortable with for your child’s age and do the camps you’re looking at have that type of supervision? What is your price limit and are you looking at camp options that keep you within your financial comfort zone? Once you have narrowed down the list of camps that meet these criteria, you can then allow your child to choose from those options. We all want our children to walk away with those cherished summer memories of our pasts. While it’s important to pick experiences for our children that will last them a lifetime, ones we know they’ll remember forever, we need to keep in mind that those memories may be a little different than our own… and that’s ok.
New River Middle School Gets a Logo Makeover From Guy Harvey N
ew River Middle School’s logo has taken on a new look! The school’s mascot is the shark, but now it has a full-color lifelike rendering of a tiger shark, painted by renowned marine artist and conservationist, Guy Harvey. New River is partnering with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which sponsors ocean marine research and conservation projects, to enhance its marine science magnet program. The partnership and new logo were announced at the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, September 30th. “This logo carries a responsibility,” Harvey told students through a videotaped message. “We need each and every one of you to be devoted to marine conservation and to always speak up and advocate for sharks and other marine animals.” As part of this partnership, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Research Center are teaming up coordinating field trips to support the marine science program. Students will have the opportunity to go on boats with researchers to help identify and tag sharks and then follow their whereabouts through an NSU website. students with an in-depth exploration of Florida’s coastal habitats and encourages students to appreciate the environment and become involved in conservation efforts by being stewards for the marine environment. Part of the unveiling event included presentations about sharks and research at Nova Southeastern University from Dr. Derek Burkholder. He spoke to the students regarding the variety of sharks and the research being done to track sharks and learn more about them. The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation wants to convey the message that sharks aren’t to be feared. Jessica Vaughn, 22, of Sunrise, was bitten by what’s believed to be a five to six-foot bull shark while tubing in the Intracoastal Waterway with friends June 1. She’s making a swift recovery through physical therapy and has agreed to be a “shark ambassador,” talking to students in schools about sharks. She made her first appearance at New River during the unveiling ceremony. Jessica said, “It was a wonderful day to be a shark and even better to be a “New River Shark!” For more information about New River Middle School and the Marine Science Magnet Program, go the website http://newriver.browardschools.com or call (754) 323-3600.

ood study habits and organizational skills can mean the difference between a successful student and a poor performer. A student who possesses the intellect to do well in school but lacks the organizational skills may easily fall behind and suffer from poor grades—especially as the workload in school increases and his or her schedule becomes more demanding. On the other hand, a child who struggles in school already and has trouble keeping track of assignments or is constantly losing things may find school challenges even more insurmountable. Here are a few tips to help your child become a more organized student: Establish a homework routine. Your after-school and evening routine should include a set time for homework, dinner, extracurricular activities and bedtime. During homework time, your child should begin by making a to-do list of his or her top priorities for the session, and he or she should check off items as completed. Your child’s study space should be free from distractions and stocked with the supplies needed so that your child can quickly dive into each homework session. Make use of a planner, homework notebook or planner app. One of the most common issues with disorganized students is that they forget or lose track of what they are supposed to work on each evening. Your child should have a simple notebook in which to write down the following—each and every day: • Each class/subject • Homework assigned for each class (or “no homework”) • Upcoming test/quiz dates or projects mentioned by the teacher
| Plantation Sports & Activities Directory
66
Check this notebook every night to ensure all work that is assigned is being completed at home. If your child is old enough to make effective use of a planner/calendar, teach him or her to block out time on the daily calendar for all commitments (school, activities, work, studying, dinner and sleep) and write down all upcoming tests, quizzes and projects on the appropriate calendar dates. For students who use smartphones or tablets, consider a student planner app such as myHomework or iStudiez Pro, which each allow students to track homework, tests, projects and lessons, receive reminders for upcoming tests and assignments, and manage their class and life schedules. The better your child is at time management, the more prepared he or she will be for high school and college academics. Make checklists. Introduce routines for all chores and tasks in your household and create checklists to help your child get familiar with the necessary steps. This also will help your child become more independent and give him or her a sense of responsibility and fulfillment. For example, a morning checklist might include picking out clothes and getting dressed, brushing teeth, making the bed, preparing the backpack, making lunch and so on. Show your child that good organization is important in everything that he or she does. Make tidying up a nightly activity. Every study or homework session should be followed by five minutes of putting away supplies, straightening the desk and getting the backpack ready for the next day. Get your child into the habit of finishing each homework period this way. Effective organization is an asset that will help your child as a student and a person throughout his or her life. As your child embraces this skill, studying and homework will become much more fluid processes—and your child will have the tools to be a more independent, successful student.

Helping Your Child be More Organized
Fighting for a Cure By Julie Kasper
P
lantation Park Elementary is truly “One in a Minion!” Each year the school participates in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event held every spring in the city of Plantation. During the school year, the teachers and staff hold different fundraisers to help raise money for their team goal. The first event was held October 3, 2014 when the entire student body and staff were asked to “wear pink” and pledge at least one dollar to help fight cancer. The small school of 500+ students raised $565 in one day. There are several other events scheduled up until the actual relay event, which is being held April 24-25, 2015: Comedy Club Fundraiser, New Year’s BINGO and Make, Bake, and Grow event. All of the funds raised helps fight cancer. Nicole Fimiano, the ESE Specialist at Plantation Park Elementary, is the team captain for her school and has been involved in Relay for Life for several years.
The school wants to teach students how important it is to get involved at a young age and have them think beyond themselves. Almost everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another. “It really is so important that we let kids know that cancer is just not for one person,” Principal Julie Gittelman says. “It can happen to anyone, or any one family member, so you just teach the kids so they’re aware to be sensitive, to care for others, not just themselves. Our school has been personally affected by cancer; it’s always effortless to get people to help. We seem to always exceed our team goal.” Plantation Park Elementary is a school where the students, parents, staff and the community work together because we “give a HOOT” about children!” If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school (754) 323-7150.

a parent comes in and tells me about what their child has done, it means the children learned it well enough to teach someone else, and that is when we know they are truly making learning gains,” explained Frost. In support of the STEM initiative, the school runs an engineering club called SECME. The school has also added a Robotics club and students will begin participating in that in January. lantation Elementary becomes a STEM Museum Magnet School. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There are two labs up and running in the school. These are two grant initiatives that provide the students with hands-on learning experiences. Students will research and implement the engineering design processes from the beginning of a project to the end. The LIL Lab, Learning Innovation Lab, has students rotating through interactive centers that reinforce reading, math and science skills, and they can even check out books that support heir research topics. “A lot of parents are talking about the hands on activities from the labs their children are doing,” Principal Tonya Frost said. The STEM Science Lab, correlates with classroom science instruction and allows students to experiment and apply scientific and engineering practices. “These two STEM labs help lead the students into 21st century learning,” said Frost. “Our students are being prepared for the college and careers. The more exposure to new technology and how to use it helps our students become competitive in high school, college and in the workplace.” The lab work helps transfer information and skills that the students are learning into real life applications. “When

OFFERS STUDENTS HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS By Julie Kasper
eminole Middle School is ready for the next generation of learners. More and more middle school students have the chance to earn high school credits before they even get to 9th grade. “Some students from Seminole will be able to graduate from the 8th grade with as many as 10 high school credits,” Seminole Middle Administrator Bill DeKlavon said. “We really have something for every student.” Even though the opportunity is there for a child to take high school courses, you want to be sure your student can handle the load. The school recommends finding an area of interest and choosing a course in that subject. The selection of 12 high school courses that will be offered at Seminole are: Creative Writing 1-2 and Creative Writing 3-4, Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Speech & Debate, American Sign Language 1 and American Sign Language 2. “The beauty of this, is Seminole’s schedule,” School Counseling Director Robbie Robinson said. “We cover all the students’ needs with 8 courses each year.” Some parents may ask, ‘What is the rush?’ Taking a few high school credits in middle school, will allow your child to have more elective classes in high school where they have an even greater variety of courses to take. For instance, if a child would like to take band, drama and yearbook as
T
a freshman, they may have room in their schedule if they have already completed their foreign language requirement in middle school. Or they can continue taking level 3 and 4 of their foreign language in high school for those looking to build a competitive college application resume. “We offer every type of course, from remediation to enrichment, for our students at Seminole,” Principal Kathy Marlow said. “We are constantly looking at our classes so that we provide a competitive edge for the future.” To register for Seminole Middle please call the school’s guidance office at (754) 323-4200.
he South Plantation High School Drama Department will present The Addams Family production in February. The play is about the weird and wonderful family that so many people remember from the television show. The production is centered around the daughter, Wednesday, and her new boyfriend, and how her love for him is pulling her in a new direction, away from the family. It is definitely a show for the entire family. “We chose this play because it’s fun and will provide a lot of entertainment for our students, families and the community,” Drama Director Jason Zembuch said. “I used to watch the show as a kid, and I think the wit and humor is great.” This is the first time the drama department has put on The Addams Family. It has an amazing set, which was built by the drama students. “We have a stagecraft class that works specifically on our sets and lighting, so there
are a lot of students who do not wish to act on stage, but work very hard on each production,” Zembuch added. The Addams Family is a musical. The songs are very different than what the students are used to performing. The entire show will be performed with a ‘live student orchestra pit’ with over 20 musicians. And as always, the performance will be signed for the hearing impaired students. If you want to purchase tickets in advance you can log in to: FOTT.org. You can also buy tickets at the door, the evening of each production, located at the school’s theatre, 1300 Paladin Way, Plantation. Tickets are $8 if purchased in advance online, and $10 at the door. The shows will be held: Thursday, February 26 at 7pm; Friday, February 27 at 7pm; Saturday, February 28 at 7pm; Friday, March 6 at 7pm; Saturday, March 7 at 7pm; and Sunday, March 8 at 2pm.

he stands of South Plantation shook with excitement, between the packed bleachers of purple and gold students on one side, and on bleachers full of visitors from Plantation High School, decked out in red and blue, on the other side. The town of Plantation stood still the moment the ball was kicked off, followed by cheers and chants from both schools as the game progressed. “The annual Mayor’s Cup football game of Plantation began in the early 70’s and is an awaited tradition every year during football season,” said South Plantation High School’s athletic director Mike Collins. The Mayor’s Cup game brings the town together for a thrilling game and gives students the chance to reunite with old friends and support their school’s team. The game is an important tradition for Plantation and is always the last game of the year before playoffs. The game alternates which school gets the home advantage each year. “The Mayor’s cup is a long standing ‘Friday Night Lights’ game between crosstown rivals that generates a great deal of pride, spirit and sportsmanship among both schools,” said South Plantation Principal Kristine Henschel. The lights blared bright on South Plantation High School’s home field, November 7, for the annual Mayor’s Cup football game between rivals South Plantation and Plantation High School. Plantation High won with an exciting and dominating victory of 46-7. “The week leading up to the game was full of spirit from all the students,” said Plantation High School Principal Alona DiPaolo. “Everyone, including the staff, was excited to show their support for Plantation and continue with the tradition of the Mayor’s Cup game.” When it came to rivalry, the students of South Plantation and Plantation High participated in it tastefully with cheers, posters, social media frenzies, and the playing time on the field. Both South Plantation and Plantation High created a spirit week in honor of the annual game. Students dressed up in their school colors, South Plantation wore their “How Does it Feel to be a Colonel” t-shirts, and Plantation dressed in all black to “mourn the loss against South Plantation.” The friendly competition was encouraging and was a fun way to get students involved in the big game excitement. The loss on behalf of South Plantation was surprising to the team due to the fact that the Mayor’s Cup has rested in the home of the Paladins for the last three years in a row. “Even though we lost, we played hard and we know what to expect for next year’s game,” said South Plantation High School’s junior offensive lineman, William Evans. “It’s hard not to get upset over such a big loss, but good sportsmanship is important for both teams.” Preparation for the game took more than just the fun spirit week and pep from the student body. On behalf of team’s football players, hard work, determination and plenty of practice was put into playing the game. “It’s true when they say practice makes perfect,” said Evans. “As much as our team practices and works, it’s good to know that for next year, we need more than 100 percent effort to go into a big game like this, especially against our known rivals. Next year the cup is ours.” As of now, the Mayor’s cup and victory lies in the hands of the Plantation High School Colonels for the first time in three years. “Our players, our students, and our staff, work so hard every day in every aspect,” DiPaolo said. “Winning the Mayor’s Cup was so exciting for all of Plantation High School and is deserved by our players and all who support bringing back Colonel Pride!”
