Dear Readers, Summer Time! Vacation Time! Camp Time! I sometimes wish I was a kid again to enjoy the stress free, seemingly endless summers of going to bed late, sleeping in, doing different things and spending time with old and new friends. As parents, we don’t typically have that luxury, but we can steal it where we can on occasion! In my last letter, I wrote about “staycations” and all of the incredible things you can do right here in South Florida. People save for years to travel on their vacation to our little slice of paradise, so don’t take it for granted! This letter, however, is more geared to summer camp for parents. I’d like to remind you that by enrolling your child(ren) in summer camp, you too get to enjoy an adult summer camp of sorts. Each morning when you wake up, there is no panic about making sure backpacks are loaded with completed projects, homework, signed agendas and supplies, you simply give them a bag of stuff (change of clothes, snack and maybe a bathing suit). They are happy to go and you are happy to drop them off. When you pick them up, usually much later in the day than school, there is nothing to worry about. There is no “HAVE TO DO” list. If I may be so bold, how about scheduling a few of those days off of work, errands and chores and just chill at your home. Imagine 8 hours of silence to sunbathe, nap, read a book or hang out with your spouse or friends. It can be a much needed battery recharge! Take your ME time and camp out at home or at the beach. At the end of the day, order in food, turn off the TV, phones and video games and play some old fashioned games with the kids like cards, Monopoly, Life, backgammon or do a jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes we are so busy and overwhelmed we forget how to enjoy simple family time at home. As far as which camps to choose, sit down with the kids and flip through this magazine to the last section (purple tabbed) titled Summer Camps. There are so many options it will surprise you all! Most camps have extended care options….TAKE THEM! Not every hour of camp needs to be structured with enrichment. Sometimes those extra hours are where the friendship bonds are made. Not to mention you get a few extra, much-deserved hours to yourself as well! There are specialty camps, outdoorsy camps, athletic camps, arts camps and everything in between! Let your child immerse themselves in something they love! You do the same! Hopefully, as your kids are enjoying their summer, you will make some camp time for yourselves. Carpe Diem parents! My best to you,
Margot

Dear Weston Residents,
10
There is a new face on the Weston City Commission. Elected in a Special Election on March 14th, Byron L. Jaffe is Weston’s newest City Commissioner and we welcome him to the dais. No stranger to Weston, Commissioner Jaffe has a long history of community involvement and leadership including serving on the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Fort Lauderdale Airport Noise Study Committee, and the Hibiscus Island Maintenance Association. We look forward to his experience, ideas, and commitment to maintaining our City as one of the premier places to live in the United States. A large measure of what makes Weston a premier hometown for families is our recreation facilities and our commitment to infrastructure and incorporating new ideas, services, or products. I encourage residents to visit Tequesta Trace Park and view the newly completed installation of two multi-purpose artificial turf athletic fields. It is important to note that the infill on all artificial turf installations in the City is comprised of organic materials which are not only safe, but drastically reduce the temperature of the surface while maintaining a green standard. There are numerous benefits to artificial turf, particularly for fields with heavy use. Artificial turf can be played on during wet conditions; requires far less maintenance than grass; will not develop holes and divots; and provides for year-round use. The fields will be used mainly for football, lacrosse, and rugby as well as the sports programs at Tequesta Trace Middle School. We can already hear a welcome sigh of relief from the participants in Weston sports leagues and programs. City staff is well into the budget process for fiscal year 2018, including scheduling Commission Workshops as needed. Budgets for the City of Weston, the Indian Trace Development District and the Bonaventure Development District run October 1st through September 30th of each year. The City Manager’s Proposed Budgets will be reviewed and discussed many times over in the months leading up to their adoption in September. The Budget is the single most important determination the City Commission votes on each year, which impacts every property owner in our City. We highly respect this fiscal responsibility and do not take it lightly. As a Commission, we will seek to balance quality of life, infrastructure and public safety needs along with additional factors into a budget, which provides the best balance for Weston. We encourage and look forward to your input at our public hearings once they are established for September. As students wrap up another school year, we congratulate those moving up or graduating and wish everyone a safe and fun-filled summer. Oftentimes it is a challenge to keep children and teens entertained during the summer break. Many pass the time at summer camp, on vacation or relaxing poolside. Right here in Weston, the Weston YMCA, the Weston Tennis Center, and numerous other facilities offer a variety of summer programming options. If you’re headed out of town, we suggest the BSO Home Watch Program. BSO will send personnel to check on your residence daily. Download the Home Watch form on the city website. Another tip: don’t advertise you are out of town on social media. Unfortunately, it’s not only your friends who might be watching. An important reminder for all: never leave children unsupervised in or around a body of water. Drownings are 100% preventable. Lastly, come join the parade! An annual favorite; the Weston July 4th Hometown Parade takes place at 10:30am on Tuesday, July 4th. Be a participant or view from along the parade route – both are free and so much fun! Visit our website for a parade application today. See you at the Parade!

or nearly 40 years, the Florida Super Stars have taught dancing, cheering, baton twirling - and much more. They recently finished another busy season, where students had an opportunity to demonstrate their talents locally, as well as around the state of Florida. The team performed in a halftime show for the Miami Dolphins in October, a Miami Heat halftime show in December, Disney World’s Main Street Parade in February and placed first at the Wide World of Sports competition. The Florida Super Stars also stayed active in the local community, performing at Pines Day and the Miramar Octoberfest, as well as parades in Weston and Cooper City. According to Director Wendy Russell, who established the team in 1978, the program also teaches the students many life skills. “The girls learn the importance of good sportsmanship and team work, as they develop tremendous amounts of self-confidence when performing for large crowds at the major sporting events and competitions.” From September to May, Florida Super Stars will offer programs at 10 parks and community centers in Pembroke Pines, Weston, Miramar, Cooper City and Hollywood. They accept students as early as four years old. Since many of the kids start so young, they often create lifelong friendships and find that the team becomes a second family. “Just this year, I’ve been to three weddings, two baby showers, a bachelorette party, and a few bridal showers with groups of girls
who grew up together in my program,” said Russell. From June 12 to July 22, students, ages 4 to 14, will have an opportunity to hone their skills at the Summer Dance Jam Camp. The high-energy, fun-filled camp will be held at two locations - Weston and Pembroke Pines. All classes are held indoors at air-conditioned facilities. The entire Summer Dance Jam staff has grown up in the program. They have ten or more years of training and at least five years of student teaching experience. “This will prove to be an action-packed, educational experience for your child,” said Russell. Summer Dance Jam will be offered in three, two-week sessions on week days only. Instructors will have 8 to 12 children in each of the “Home Teams,” which will be divided by both age and ability. The girls will rotate to the various instructors throughout the day, while training in several forms of dance, cheer and baton twirling. For added fun, the program includes “Crazy Days,” such as Flower Power Day, Crazy Hat Day and Pajama Day. The children can dress up each day and a winner from each home team will be chosen as “Queen of the Day.” All Summer Dance Jam participants will receive a trophy at the camp show, performed on the last Friday of each of the three sessions. For information Florida Super Stars, call 954-438-2075, send an email to misswendy@floridasuperstars.com or visit www.FloridaSuperStars.com. he Weston Warriors have made a move to Pop Warner’s Gold Coast Division in Broward County. Founded in 1929, Pop Warner is the Nation’s largest youth football program and the only one that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom. A contributing factor for this move was a league decision allowing unlimited weight classes for players 8 years old and older in the Warriors’ former league. The Warriors Football Program will benefit from Pop Warner’s strict age and weight matrix that allows kids to compete with their peers of similar age and size. Some of the many benefits of joining the Weston Warriors in the Pop Warner Organization are the following: • Compete against the Best in the Nation - Pop Warner Football Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships take place at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex™ at Disney World each season for the right to be crowned Pop Warner National Champion. Older/Lighter weight rules apply. • Only Pop Warner Program in SW Broward County – within 15 minutes of Cooper City, Davie, Plantation, Sunrise, Tamarac & West Pembroke Pines. • Fun, Fun, Fun! – The #1 reason kids play sports. Specialized systems to ensure that every child learns & every child plays! • Safety, Safety First! - strict AGE & WEIGHT MATRIX reduces the risk & reality of injuries by allowing kids to compete with kids of similar size. • More than just Athletes - Pop Warner requires its participants to perform adequately in school before allowing them to play. • New Artificial Turf Fields – state of the art practice fields beginning in 2017 • Little Scholars Program - Pop Warner rewards its members for their outstanding performance in the classroom. Scholarship opportunities up to $10,000 are available.
•
Family Atmosphere! – Join family & friends for great fun at Warriors’ events throughout the year. • Coaching Education Programs - the safety of athletes is always a top priority so there is extensive training for all football, cheer & dance coaches. • Nation’s Largest Youth Football Program – Pop Warner is currently in 42 states & 7 countries, over 120 leagues & 325,000 members. The Warriors Board of Directors feel that the Pop Warner Program as a whole is a natural fit for the Weston community by helping achieve their vision of serving the best interests of the children. They are also excited about the chance to have the children compete at Disney World! Weston Warriors play at Tequesta Trace Park in Weston. Regular season runs August - October with Playoffs going through November. Saturday home games at Tequesta Trace Park and away games at local Pop Warner club fields. Practices average 3-4 evenings per week according to each coach. Teams fill quickly, early registration is encouraged. Once teams are filled, registrants will be put on a wait list. TACKLE FOOTBALL: Boys ages 5-15. Fee of $325 includes usage of helmet, pads, uniform and practice jersey. Player provides their own football cleats (no metal cleats), practice pants & mouth guard. CHEERLEADING: Girls ages 5-15. Fee of $325 includes 2 practice shirts and 1 practice shorts, bloomers, practice bows and game bow and uniform usage for the season. id you know that each of us has the opportunity to “Save a Life”? Well, we do! I am going to make sure all of us in the community know how. We need more “Water Safety Advocates” like you. Grandparents, teachers, neighbors and kids themselves can be safer and smarter around water. For those of us in Aquatics and Water Safety Education specialties, we are sadly aware drowning in Florida surpasses all other causes of death in children age 14 and under. As a whole, we have 1.2 million people around the world that die by drowning every year! So, let’s get started with basic water safety steps that each of you can do in and around the pool or body of water. Remember, it’s neighborly to be proactive and responsible as citizens to keep an eye out for each other and especially our most valuable assets…Our children! They are our future, so let’s make sure we do what we can to make it a safe and successful one. I can’t say it any better than our partners over at the “Pool Safely” campaign; that your greatest water safety assurance comes from adopting and practicing as many safety steps as possible. Adding an extra safety step around the water can make all the difference. You can never know which safety step will save a life – until it does.
Let’s learn a few simple safety steps that could save a life: • Barriers and layers of protection in and around the pool and other water areas! (This means gates around pools, gates that self latch and close, and safety equipment) • Supervision at all times around water: Be Alert, Stay Close and Watch! (Which means no texting or talking on the phone with your neighbor. you’re the “Water Watcher”!) • Learn to Swim! It’s not just for infants, toddlers and kids…. It’s for adults too! (Just because you have done it once doesn’t mean you don’t need refreshers) • Know how to perform CPR on children and adults. (You never know when you might need to help out a neighbor ) • Never swim alone, you never know when something can go wrong! (To be a swim buddy or adult supervisor you need to be with the swimmer. not next door!) • Don’t just pack it, wear your Lifejacket! (They come in great colors and sizes, so make sure to have it on when boating, kayaking or enjoying any open water activities!) Pledge now to do your part and participate in your community and right at home! It’s the simple safety steps that can make a difference between life or death!

DIRECTORY navigate to a series of checkpoints, which are marked by posts stuck in the ground and topped by an orange and white orienteering marker. The more advanced courses include longer distances and more complex navigation challenges, such as going off trails or choosing multiple routes between control points. The permanent course maps are available at the park office or online on the South Florida Orienteering website, www.sflorienteering.org/course-types. “Markham is a great park for orienteering,” said Gord Hunter, director of Suncoast Orienteering. “It has many trails, a variety of terrains and features. Despite the complex forest, you are never far from the road.” Mike Engestrom participated in orienteering in the early 1980’s in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. He now lives in Weston and has been involved in the sport for the last few years. He is a volunteer coordinator for South Florida Orienteering (SFLO) and a member of Suncoast Orienteering (SOAR), Florida Orienteering (FLO) and Orienteering USA (O-USA). “I’ve always liked land navigation, using a map and compass, from my time with the Boy Scouts and Army Reserve,” said Engestrom. “It is a great way to get exercise and experience time in nature and wooded environments. It gets folks, especially kids, away from computer monitors and game consoles to experience nature in a healthy environment that also promotes a useful technical skill.” There are many orienteering clubs around the United Sates, most of which are listed on the website, www.us.orienteering.org/clubs/ all#start-table. South Florida Orienteering currently focuses on Broward County, Miami-Dade County, with plans to expand to Palm Beach and other contiguous regional areas. As orienteering grows in South Florida, events have been planned at a variety of parks, including Oleta River State Park, C.B. Smith Park, Tree Tops Park and possibly Jonathan Dickinson Park.

lthough orienteering has been established in Florida for the past 25 years, it has been limited to the Central Florida area. With a new permanent course at Markham Park, orienteering is now growing in popularity in South Florida. It is a great way for people, ages 8 to 80, to explore the outdoors and experience nature. All you need to get started is suitable footwear, comfortable clothing and a good compass. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers in Scandinavia, the sport combines racing with navigation and can be either competitive or recreational. As a timed race, participants use a specially created, highly detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain and visit control points in sequence. In order to prove they have visited a control, they use a punch hanging from the bag to mark their control card. Recreationally, courses also can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods, with difficulty levels from beginner to expert. The permanent courses at Markham Park are the brainchild, creation and work of Sebastian Michko, who is currently an ROTC student at Texas A&M University. He completed the permanent courses last year as part of an Eagle Scout project. Although prior orienteering events had been held at CB Smith Park, Markham Park and Oleta River State Park, he was the first to establish a permanent course in South Florida. At the time, he was a student at Ft. Lauderdale High School. He was also a JROTC orienteer and one of the best orienteers in Florida. The courses at Markham Park are used for two purposes. There are one-day events, which are primarily for high school JROTC competitions, but typically also open to public participation. Most of the orienteering at the park, however, occurs on a recreational basis. For a small fee, people can use the novice (1.5 miles), intermediate (2.1 miles) or advanced (2.7 miles) maps any day to complete the course of their choice. They

atthew Futterman is the author of “Players: The Story of Sports and Money and the Visionaries Who Fought to Create a Revolution.” His 2016 book is a history of the changes that saw professional athletes go from modestly paid employees of the 1950s who needed off-season jobs, to today’s multimillionaire entrepreneurs building their “brands” with endorsements, clothing lines and other enterprises. So when Arnold Palmer, one of the first athlete-entrepreneurs, died in September 2016 at the age of 87, Futterman wrote a remembrance of the iconic golfer for the Wall Street Journal. Futterman began his essay with a question, then answered it:
48
What do you think about when you think about Arnold Palmer? This is what I think about: a measly life insurance policy that transformed the business of sports and made possible the flow of millions of dollars to modern athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and LeBron James. Here’s the rest of the story: In the winter of 1961, Arnold Palmer was a 31-year-old professional golfer who had won the Masters and U.S. Open the previous summer, and was just beginning to become a household name. Seven years previous, Palmer had signed (without legal counsel) what Futterman characterized as “an absurdly lopsided and exploitive” 10-year endorsement agreement with a sports equipment company. Now, in light of his performance and notoriety, Palmer wanted to renegotiate his contract, getting a larger percentage from the sale of balls and clubs that had his name on them. The sporting goods company agreed, but wanted to lock Palmer in for another 20 years. Palmer was okay with the length of the contract, but with a stipulation: He wanted a life insurance policy, and he wanted the company to pay for it. Futterman explains: He was 31-years-old, with two daughters and a wife to think about, and he knew he couldn’t stake his financial future on the paltry prize money available in golf in those days. Plus, he was well aware that few things were as impermanent as the career of a professional athlete. Sure, he was the defending Masters and U.S. Open champ, but the yips or a balky back could take it all away in a heartbeat.
Palmer wanted a benefit similar to those that corporations often give their key employees, an executive compensation agreement built around life insurance to provide a measure of financial security whether he lived, died or became disabled. Palmer felt he deserved such consideration because, while he might not be an executive, his involvement was a key component in the company’s success. The annual premium for the policy was $880 – about $7,000 today – adjusted for inflation, and not a lot of money then or now. At today’s rates, the premium would result in an insurance benefit of somewhere near $1 million, which is substantial, but not exorbitant. Amazingly, the sporting goods CEO refused, saying no golfer deserved something that most of the company’s executives didn’t even have. The CEO figured Palmer was in no position to turn down two decades of guaranteed income over something so small. But according to Futterman, “The life insurance policy was his line in the sand, the measure of whether this company that supposedly cared so much about him actually respected him as a professional.” Palmer broke off negotiations, and fulfilled the final three years of his original contract, and started a unique business relationship with Mark McCormack, the founder of International Marketing Group (IMG). With IMG’s guidance, Palmer produced his own line of golf equipment and apparel, designed golf courses, and became a celebrity pitchman for everything from motor oil to soft drinks. The IMG template that began with Palmer expanded from athletes to entertainers and completely changed the financial landscape of both fields. Sports and entertainment became “industries,” and the “stars” became entrepreneurs and business owners. This true story has several interesting takeaways regarding life insurance. Palmer recognized the tenuous nature of his income, and his long-term financial obligations to his family, and he saw permanent life insurance as a solution to those challenges. The executive compensation agreement idea Palmer proposed to satisfy his desire for life insurance is still used today by many companies to retain valuable talent. A lot of things have changed over the past six decades, but the essential form, function and value of life insurance has remained remarkably constant.

side from the obvious health benefits of a good hike, be it through a flat forest or up a hilly mountain (while traveling outside of Florida, of course), new research shows that hiking can actually change your brain for the better. In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, boosting self-esteem and releasing endorphins, a recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that spending time in nature significantly decreases negative, obsessive thoughts. The study found that participants who walked for 90 minutes in a natural environment reported reduced neural activity in the subgnual prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain related to mental illness. As if this wasn’t reason enough to get outdoors and enjoy nature, psychologists have also discovered the following: Disconnecting from technology while reconnecting with nature can drastically improve creative problem solving. Participants in one study went backpacking through nature for nearly 4 days; during this time they were not allowed to use ANY technology. When asked to perform tasks, which required creative thinking and complex problem solving, researchers found that performance improved by 50% for those who took part in the tech-free outdoor hiking excursion. It is important to note that both technology and urban noise are incredibly distracting and constantly demand our attention. This prevents us from focusing and challenges even the simplest cognitive functions. A nice, quiet hike, free of technology, can soothe your mind, boost creative thinking and reduce mental fatigue. What writers block?! Hiking outdoors can improve ADHD in children. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is becoming more common among children. Children with ADHD have a difficult time with impulse control and staying focused. Research has found that exposing children with ADHD to outdoor activities significantly reduces these symptoms. Basically, nature exposure can benefit anyone who has a difficult time paying attention and/or exhibits impulsive behavior. Hiking in Nature is GREAT exercise and boosts brainpower. Exercise of any kind does wonders for our overall well-being and hiking is no exception. Depending on your size and the difficulty of the hike, you can burn between 400–700 calories per hour and it’s easier on the joints the running. It has also been proven that individuals who exercise outdoors are more likely to be consistent with their workout plan, making hiking the “natural” choice for those wishing to become more active on a regular basis. Hiking is one of the easiest and least expensive activities to get involved in. Always start out small in the beginning to test your abilities. Remember – any outdoor exercise is better than none. Work at your own pace and increase distance and degree of difficulty accordingly as you go. Make sure you have a good pair of durable hiking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle to keep hydrated. You can also use trekking poles as well. These will help you increase your speed and take some of the pressure off your knees. While South Florida may not have the most challenging and hilly terrains to discover, there are a plethora of trails and parks throughout south Florida for you and your family to explore. We’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you and compiled a list of the best of the best in Broward County.
Barrier Island Nature Trail – John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, Dania Beach At John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, the Barrier Island Nature Trail will take you away from the crowds at the beach and into a quiet patch of woods along a small strip of land on a barrier island just south of Fort Lauderdale. At an easy half-mile nature walk, it’s the perfect introduction for children to plants indigenous to the beach as well as barrier island habitats. It will also provide a much-needed break from exposure to the hot sun all day. Chapel Trail Nature Preserve, Pembroke Pines Discover this remnant of original Everglades ecosystem that was supplanted by development east of US 27. With 450 acres of preserved habitats, this hike makes an excellent bird-watching destination and you can explore it by canoe or on foot. A boardwalk twists and turns over the open water, providing resting points with benches and several covered shelters. Pine Island Ridge Natural Area, Davie A ridge top that was once surrounded by the grassy waters of the Everglades is the highest natural landform in Broward County with an elevation of 29 feed above sea level. Home to wildlife such as gopher tortoises, great horned owls, red-bellied woodpeckers, and Cooper’s hawks, Pine Island Ridge is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, a network of nearly 500 sites throughout Florida selected for their excellent bird-watching opportunities. Interpretive signage is available throughout and the total area spans 101.2 acres with the hiking trail measuring about 1.8 miles. Tree Tops Park, Davie An oasis of ancient live oaks, tropical hammocks and lush wetlands cover more than 140 acres at Tree Tops Park in Davie. A successful story for conservation, this former dairy farm was previously slated to become a golf community before it was protected for its residents by Broward County in 1980. In addition to walking the trails amid the amazing oak canopy, this sizeable park, spanning 1.2 miles, is also home to equestrian and canoe trails and connects directly to the aforementioned Pine Island Ridge Natural Area. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Fort Lauderdale Former estate of Chicago attorney Hugh Taylor Birch, this tropical forest located just across the street from Fort Lauderdale Beach showcases gardens and an assortment of botanical rarities coupled with gardens gone wild. An enormous fig dominates the main picnic area and becomes a forest onto itself with a crown spread of 173 feet. There Coastal Hammock Trail is a 20-minute leisurely walk through a native maritime tropical hardwood ecosystem, some of the last designated within Broward County. The Mid Trail gives different views of the park by showcasing numerous plants brought here by Mr. Birch. A self-guided audio tour may be taken with your cell phone.

fter suffering the tragic death of teammate Max Cardenas to a skateboarding incident in September, the Cypress Bay Boys soccer team won its fifth state title in seven years on February 18th, defeating Lakewood Ranch 1-0 in Deland, Florida. The team had lost in the state semifinal with twenty seconds to go in the match last year, and they wanted to achieve their ultimate goal of winning the state title this year for their late teammate. “We dedicated this season to our fallen brother,” said senior captain David Corredor, whose goal in the 8th minute off a throw-in from Cole Sanfillipo was the difference in the hard fought victory. “We told our seniors last year when we lost it in the last 20 seconds we had unfinished business. We told them we were going to win and we did.” Junior Mateo Pieschacon, the team’s leading goal scorer and one of the few players on the team who had already experienced winning a state title, said this year was different. “My freshman year was special being so young and
R
part of this amazing program, but this year was for Max and there was much more pressure not to let down our friend.” Coach Colin Ilgner inherited a very successful program and feels the pressure of sustaining a dynasty, but has done so with two state titles in three years. “It’s no small task winning the state especially when everyone is gunning for Cypress Bay. The boys had a goal, stayed focused, and brought this home for Max.” As the final minutes of the game were winding down, the crowd was overcome with emotion and began chanting “take it to the Max!” When the final whistle blew, emotions erupted and tears were in the eyes of most players, knowing the magnitude of what was accomplished. After the game, senior Jacobo Vasquez said, “It’s hard to lose when you have an angel looking out for you.” Even though this is the program’s fifth state championship, they had never played for such a personal reason. This one was truly for Max.
Tequesta Trace Students Create Herb Garden
ecently, Tequesta Trace Middle School challenged students to create a garden filled with aromatic herbs in a self-contained platform, above ground, as part of a larger garden at school, simultaneously incorporating science test item specs and science benchmarks in a different context. Students chose to create the garden within a pallet. The pallet was secured with landscaping cloth along bottom and sides. Once this was completed, they were able to focus on the objectives. First and foremost, the objective was collaboration in a unique context, invigorating the science program. Ms. Shields’ Cambridge students were challenged to work together in the collection and classification of plants, the distribution of soil within the confines of the pallet, and the
planting of the herbs, thereby planning out and completing types of observations, identification of variables, collection and organization of data, making predictions and defending conclusions. Collaboration will continue, as these students are responsible for the upkeep of this garden, including watering, weeding and fertilizing, discussing and comparing methods used, results obtained, and explanations among students conducting similar investigations. Students will study over time the effect of the location of the garden, investigating the importance of sunlight, shade, water to describe and investigate the process of photosynthesis and the roles played by components such as light, carbon dioxide, water and chlorophyll.

and to take on the responsibilities necessary for a productive garden. There’s a sense of pride in their accomplishment. Kindergartners are learning to develop a greater understanding of the natural world and the role they play in it. This exciting, hands-on learning experience is relevant to the students and keeps them actively engaged in the learning process. Growing a garden enriches the curriculum in science, math and language arts. Kindergartners are learning about the parts of the plants, how plants are alike and different in the way they look and the things they do, and what they need to grow. Students are also learning math skills as they space the seeds and measure the plants’ growth. This type of collaborative learning further promotes communication, while increasing vocabulary and verbal skills. The kindergarten teachers at Gator Run are optimistic that this gardening experience will foster a love of nature for the students and instill good eating habits that will last a lifetime.

indergartners are not only eating their vegetables at Gator Run Elementary School, they’re growing them too! With the help from eagle scouts in the construction of the garden boxes, each kindergarten class has a space reserved just for them. With additional donations of supplies from parents and teachers, the gardens are in full bloom. Avid “kinder-gardeners” spend part of their recess time planting, weeding, and watering their vegetable gardens. After much hard work, they are finally reaping the rewards. Students are enjoying the lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, carrots, peppers, green beans, and spices they had a hand in creating. The students are anxious to pick and sample their bounty. The benefits of kindergartners cultivating a garden at school are many. The garden has become a classroom where students are learning to eat healthful, organically grown vegetables that they are personally growing and caring for. Growing a garden teaches students patience as they wait for seeds to sprout and tomatoes to ripen. It creates opportunities for students to work cooperatively

hat Kind of World Do You Want?” The answers to this question were explored by students at Falcon Cove Middle School in a recent Dance performance. The performance, which was held on March 9 & 10, consisted of more than 150 students who attend dance classes daily while enrolled in the Dance course. The show was created by Andrea Alter, dance teacher at Falcon Cove, in an effort to inspire positive change and to help students find a connection to the real world through the art of Dance. The choreography in the show highlighted issues related to bullying, intolerance, immigration and the complexity of relationships. There were also dances that touched upon the serious concerns we have about our planet and mankind’s obsession with technology. The process for writing the show began in December. After thorough research and discussion, specific issues and topics were chosen as themes for the show. Several weeks were then spent shaping the ideas and themes before any movement was even created. Eventually, by integrating various forms of dance including contemporary, lyrical, and jazz, the movement was created and molded to convey a particular theme for each dance. The show opened with a group dance with colorful fabric to the song “True Colors” and closed with a stunning performance of “Earth Song” that
incorporated vibrant plant, sun, fire and water characters. Complete with professional costumes, scenery, video, and lighting, “What Kind of World Do You Want?” garnered rave reviews from its audience and gave the Weston community a glimpse of the power that the arts have to make the world a better place. In keeping with the spirit of making the world a better place, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales is being donated by the FCMS Dance program to “Kids in Distress,” a charity organization working for the prevention of child abuse and the treatment of abused and neglected children. In only its third year, the Falcon Cove Dance program has developed into one of the finest dance programs in the county. Last year, Andrea Alter was named Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year in the category of Dance. This spring, Ms. Alter and some of her dancers have the honor of presenting a dance at this year’s Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year awards ceremony. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will take place at the Broward Center for Performing Arts on April 26 at 6:30pm. For more information about the Falcon Cove Dance program contact andrea.alter@browardschools.com.

The Best Part of Me is a project that is completed prior to the Holocaust unit. This project ties into the character traits as well as the Holocaust. It is imperative that students realize their self-worth as well as recognize that everyone is an individual with beauty and strengths. As the students chose their favorite part of themselves, they used the writing traits to express their thoughts. Some students chose their eyes as it allows them to see the beauty that surrounds them, while other students chose their hands as wrapping their hands around their parents helped them express their love. This project ultimately led to a Valentine’s Present for their parents as well as a monumental lesson about empathy.

or over 15 years, students at Indian Trace Elementary have participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program. This charitable event is near and dear to Coach Mark Logsdon’s heart. “Heart Disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. “I’ve lost too many family and friends to heart disease. I want to teach the students that exercising and eating healthy can prevent it.” Coach Mark promotes this healthy lifestyle through his Physical Education programs at Indian Trace and his personal business, Mark at the Park. This award winning small business provides birthday parties and summer camps that promote physical activity and having fun. “I think it’s fun!” exclaims third grader, Ysa Yacinthe. “It helps my family because I tell them what I learn about healthy eating.” Over the years, Indian Trace students have raised over $100,000 for the American Heart Association. This spectacular program promotes jumping rope as a way to maintain a healthy heart. “I want to make sure the students understand that they can help prevent this disease through daily exercise and healthy eating. a Healthy Lifestyle,” states Coach Mark. The American Heart Association asks students not only to donate but also to learn about heart disease and participate in a fun exercise, jumping rope, to drive home the point of exercise. What is special about the AHA Jump Rope for Heart event is that it gives thank you gifts for people who donate. Students can earn prizes for each level of donation. This year’s theme is The Zoo Crew. “It’s good for helping people,” informs third grader Riley McGary. “If they are sick, we raise money to help them.” Second grader, Hudson Berger agrees, “It is really good to help people and save their lives.” Martin Calderon, second grader, likes the physical benefits of a healthy lifestyle. “We get exercise to make us strong and grow a lot!” After only one week, students at Indian Trace have raised $4,500. “Our goal for this year is $8,000,” reveals Coach Mark. As an extra incentive, all students who donate over $100 will have the privilege of giving Coach Mark and Principal Amy Winder a “Mud Bath!”

n Tuesday, January 31, 2017, renowned children’s author, Dr. John Becker visited Country Isles Elementary. Dr. Becker is a graduate of The Ohio State University, a former elementary school teacher, college professor at the University of Florida, and administrator at the Columbus Zoo. At the Columbus Zoo, he worked closely with Jack Hanna in the field of wildlife conservation. He has since published over 26 books for children about wildlife. To prepare for his visit, students did online research of African animals to establish background knowledge. As their research was completed, classrooms worked collaboratively in creating reports, acrostic poems, illustrations, graphic organizers and much more to show their enthusiasm as they joined Dr. Becker on his safari. During his visit, Dr. Becker talked about the books he has written, shared videos from his field research experiences, read, and answered questions about his books. Our K-2 students participated in a small group session where Dr. Becker related the “story behind the story” of how he came to write his book, Mugambi’s Journey. Students were able to ask questions about his books and travels around the world. Dr. Becker’s published books were displayed during his presentation

and in the school’s Media Center for students to view and read prior to his visit. Third through fifth grade students attended a writing session and Dr. Becker presented a Nonfiction Writing Workshop. During this session, Dr. Becker guided the students through the steps he follows in creating a nonfiction book or magazine article. What a wonderful way to motivate students to become enthusiastic writers of nonfiction! Students at Country Isles were given the opportunity to purchase his books. Dr. Becker personally gave autographed copies to those students who purchased a book. Country Isles teachers, students and PTA wanted to reach out and share this experience with another school. Fifth grade teachers, Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Lopez communicated with the students in Ms. Potter and Mrs. Dellosso’s classes at Croissant Park Elementary, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Students participated in a Distance Learning experience with both schools and Dr. Becker. Students shared their projects and participated in a question and answer session. We were all thrilled to share this experience with Croissant Park. The PTA at Country Isles purchased books for the students and teachers at Croissant Park that participated in our Distance Learning session. It was a wonderful experience for all! We enjoyed our Author-In-Residence and the safari experience he brought to our school.

On Wednesday February 15th, Manatee Bay Elementary hosted their first ever Mathnasium
62
Night. Mathnasium of Weston did a fantastic job bringing out hands-on math games and activities that were appropriate for all grade levels. Parents and students could be seen playing games together and students also enjoyed their peers’ company while playing Connect 4, building marshmallow houses, solving estimation jars, and playing other math related games. The night was so fun; you wouldn’t have even known how hard you were working on math facts! All students won prizes for participating and were excited to spin the wheel to see what they won. Students who won the estimation jars even went home with gift certificates thanks to Mathnasium! A huge thank you to all the Cypress Bay Latinos in Action students who volunteered their time and expertise at the activity tables. The night would not have been possible without them. Families enjoyed a night of no cooking thanks to PTA selling pizza and snacks at the event. Manatee Bay’s wonderful sponsors, Karate America and Live Well Chiropractic, came out to show their support as well. Lastly, special thanks to MBE host Kathy White-Ortiz, 5th grade teacher, who is very grateful for the help of Beth Reinhard 4th grade teacher and Giselle Del-Barrio, Assistant Principal. Mathnasium Night was such a huge success that many are hoping for another Mathnasium event next year!
HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS!
S
ports & Activities Directory continues its successful Academic Superstar program with Huntington Learning Center. This program gives students recognition for their hard work and achievements. All students are different and all have different academic needs. Here are a few of their stories. Danny E., a 4th grader at Cooper City Elementary said, “Huntington has helped me reach my grade level. The teachers are always there to help me understand my mistakes.” Danny has been in Huntington for 6 months and he had struggled in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing. But with the help of Huntington, Danny is now able to better understand what he is reading and has improved his writing skills. With all the progress made, Danny was very proud to say that he has improved his grades and made it to honor roll! The team at the Huntington Learning Center in Pembroke Pines is very proud of the progress Danny has made in only 6 months. Keep up the good work, Danny.
Anya G. says, “I would not be where I am without all the amazing love and support Kilee and the teaching staff at Huntington have shown me!” Anya has put a lot of dedication towards getting into her dream school, Brown University. Although she keeps a high GPA and balances academics and athletics, she needed help getting her ACT score up to par with an Ivy League college. She prepped for the test with Huntington Learning Center and with the help from her teachers and a goal in mind; Anya has increased several points and is now scoring in the 99th percentile. She continues to work with Huntington, prepping for the SAT 2 test in Biology (June 10th). Franco C. came to the States from Uruguay at the end of 10th grade and struggled with his transition to American schools. He started prepping for his ACT with Huntington along with some subject tutoring in Algebra 2. By the end of Franco’s ACT journey, after learning and using the strategies taught by his teachers at Huntington, his score increased 13 points and now qualifies for 75% bright futures scholarship. Way to go, Franco!
